What is a food tour

A San Diego Food Tour combines culture, history, architecture tour in a walking or motorcoach based tour, with visits to several restaurants and/or establishments to enjoy a either specially created dish, enjoy a family style meal, or drink that is created in order to combine the specialties for each establishment while paying homage to the neighborhood and city. The Standard Food Tour visits up to 5 stops during a roughly 3 hour tour.

Food Tour, Dine Around, or Progressive Dinner?

A Dine Around visits fewer restaurants during the event (2-3 stops) with more food, often several courses at each place. A Dine Around is more customizable; we can set start time, theme, day, neighborhood, transportation, and alcohol pairings to your needs. In addition, we run Dine Arounds for up to 400 people.

A Progressive Dinner is a more traditional way to try several restaurants. Instead of dishes at each place, guests enjoy an appetizer at one stop, main course at another, and dessert at the final place.

Which Places Provide the Best Food Tours in San Diego for Groups?

The best food tours in San Diego for groups are any of the ones that accommodate at least 10 people, which would be all except the two private tours. However, if I had to pick two, I would recommend the San Diego Brewery Tou r & Taste of Little Italy Tour .

Which Places Provide the Best Food Tours in San Diego for Couples?

Again, any of the tours would work for couples, but if you’re looking for a private experience, then I would opt for one of these tours: Puerto Nuevo Lobster or Luxury Private Wine Tasting .

Honestly, the best time to take a San Diego food tour is literally anytime. With San Diego’s year-round amazing weather, literally anytime is a good time! Ok… minus the 21 days per year that it rains in San Diego. But, aside from those days, you can expect lovely weather! I mean it’s not called Sunny San Diego for nothing. Pretty much year-round, you can expect average high temperatures of 65 – 75°F and average low temperatures around 50 – 60°F.

A picture of the coastal bluffs in La Jolla.

And believe it or not, locals like myself also do these food tours. You definitely don’t need to be a complete newbie to the city or wait for friends to visit to take one of these San Diego foodie tours.

I’ve realized that San Diego is freaking huge. No matter how much I think I know the city… I’m frequently reminded that there’s always something new to discover in this huge, ever-changing city!

Honestly, unless you’re doing one of the wine-tasting day trips… you likely won’t need to bring anything out of the ordinary. But, just to help you remember the essentials, here’s a short list of things to bring with you on the tour.

  • 👟 Comfortable Walking Shoes — Most of the tours involve a fair amount of walking so be sure to wear comfortable shoes. This is especially recommended on tours that involve alcohol consumption. No one likes falling on their face 😅
  • 🌞 Sunscreen — You’ll be spending some time in sunny San Diego, or at least somewhere nearby, so make sure to lather on sunscreen. You wouldn’t want to end up resembling a lobster when the trip is over!
  • 😎 Sunglasses & Hat — Likewise, I suggest bringing some sunglasses and a hat, but that’s just my preference.
  • 💸 Wallet + ID — If you plan on drinking, you’ll want to bring your ID to confirm your age, and if you plan on buying extra drinks that aren’t included in your tour package. Sometimes, I’ll even tip my guide if the tour is exceptional, so maybe bring cash for that if you feel compelled.
  • 🌮 Empty Stomach — To guarantee you have the full experience, come with a big appetite! Before I do my food tours, I try to avoid eating until it’s tour time (unless it’s an evening tour). I mean, you want to make sure your stomach is ready for all of the deliciousness coming its way right?!

For first-time visitors who are looking to plan a short vacation, I recommend spending at least three days in San Diego.

And while that may not seem like much, three days is the perfect amount of time to get a great introduction to the city and what the city has to offer without feeling too rushed.

A picture of Balboa Park in San Diego on a sunny day.

That said, San Diego is also a popular destination for a day trip, weekend getaways, or even long-term vacations.

From soaking up the sun or surfing at its famous beaches , walking around the different districts and neighborhoods , exploring the iconic Balboa Park, and of course, embarking on a flavorful food tour … there are tons of activities to keep locals and visitors perpetually entertained.

If you’re looking for comfortable lodgings in San Diego, here are a few of my favorites I recommend considering having stayed in the city on vacation and living in the city for 4 years! I know most people don’t have the time or the will to research hundreds of hotels, so hopefully, this helps you out!

Low-Costs Stays

  • HI San Diego Downtown : 3-star hotel/hostel in Gaslamp Quarter | ⭐️ 8.1 / 10
  • Best Western Plus Bayside Inn : 3-star hotel near SD airport | ⭐️ 8.4 / 10

Mid-Range Stays

  • Sheraton San Diego : 4-star hotel with waterfront views | ⭐️ 7.6 / 10
  • Catamaran Resort & Spa : 4-star resort near Mission Beach | ⭐️ 7.8 / 10
  • InterContinental San Diego : 4-star hotel near Little Italy | ⭐️ 8.8 / 10

I think there are three main reasons people go on food tours. First, indulging the local food and flavors is one of the best ways to immerse yourself in the culture of a city. Secondly, it’s an awesome way to support small businesses and mom-and-pop shops. Thirdly, and most importantly – they’re more often than not just delicious. I mean we all need to eat to survive, so might as well have a grand ole time doing it!

This obviously depends on your budget, but the food tours I’ve recommended range from $75 – $269 USD. Generally, however, they cost around $80 for a 2-hour experience, which is more than fair when you consider all that you get out of the tour. The pricier options consist of full-day tours and offer a more comprehensive/inclusive experience!

All of the tours I’ve recommended above are highly rated — at least ⭐️ 4.5 / 5. I reviewed about 70 different tour options and selected what I believed were the best ones based on my experiences and other guests’ reviews to create this ultimate guide to San Diego food tours!

Although most of the tours can accommodate 10 – 15 people, they rarely reach full capacity. But, if you want to avoid people even while walking around in your tour group, then I suggest opting for either of these private experiences, with only your group: Puerto Nuevo Lobster or Luxury Private Wine Tasting .

For any San Diego itinerary, food, beer, and wine tastings are often at the top of the list of best things to do in this coastal city.

From classic Mexican street tacos and California-style burritos to amazing seafood and world-renowned pizza, San Diego has something for everyone.

Whether you’re looking to sample all the best local flavors, take a deeper dive into one of the city’s distinct cuisine styles, or do a wine tour through Guadalupe Valley, there’s no shortage of amazing food tours in San Diego.

And with the help of this (likely too in-depth post lol) I hope you find the foodie experience that suits you best and have a marvelous time foraying into San Diego’s vibrant culinary scene!

Food & Drink Tours

Get a true taste of san diego, brewery, winery & distillery tours.

Take a trip to San Diego’s best wineries, explore local small-batch distillers or go on a brew hopping tour to get a behind-the-scenes look at how some of San Diego award-winning craft beers are brewed. Transportation options include by foot, bus, train, or chauffeured limousine, which ensures a safe and fun time for everyone.

CITY WALKING TOURS

You can get to know a city in any number of ways, but one of the most flavorful is through a walking food tour. These usually combine a curated selection of dishes with a healthy helping of history, and just enough exertion to keep your appetite stimulated. Generally lasting two to three hours with three to six restaurant stops, several tours also incorporate local wine or craft beer tastings. Neighborhood destinations include Little Italy, Liberty Station, Downtown San Diego, La Jolla, North Park, Pacific Beach, Coronado, Carlsbad, Encinitas and the Gaslamp District (also offered via Segway).

SPECIALIZED FOOD TOURS

Instead of throwing a wide net, you can also keep your foodie focus narrowed to one specific item. For example, celebrate all things sweet with a dessert, tea and coffee tour. These popular tours pair mouth-watering confections with just the right tea or coffee. Or find your ultimate pie with a Little Italy pizza tour where you can taste the difference between Neapolitan or Sicilian style, brick oven versus wood-fired, and traditional or cucina nuova.

EPICUREAN EXCURSIONS

For a longer, more in-depth foodie experience, try a culinary circuit that combines visits with a local coffee roaster, artisan bakery, urban winery, distillery or brewery with an organic farm. Then enjoy a farm-to-fork meal first-hand. In addition to tastings and demonstrations, you’ll learn from each local business about their purveyor’s influences in San Diego.

Explore farm to table cuisine by bus, train, Segway, or a good ol' fashion walk through San Diego. Check out the list of amazing food and drink tours below and start savoring the best of San Diego's top food spots, breweries, wineries, and distilleries.

San diego’s best restaurants of 2024.

San Diego's Best Restaurants in 2024 by San Diego Magazine including Kinme Omakase in Bankers Hill

By Troy Johnson , Jackie Bryant , Beth Demmon , Maren Hawkins , Samantha Lacy , Nicolle Monico & Amelia Rodriguez

Put that salad on layaway. Get an APR on some fries. This was the year the cost of dining out landed on Mars. Around the time the phrase “supply chain issues” took a hint and deleted our number, inflation slid into our DMs. Food costs bullied chefs , restaurant owners, and diners.

I realize this is a pretty apocalyptic way to introduce our annual celebration of San Diego’s food and drink culture—our bible of the restaurant scene, with its attendant bao bun psalms and birria haikus.

Subscribe and get 1 year for $18

But that lurking doomery only underscores the heights San Diego’s restaurant culture has finally reached. It’s never been harder to operate a restaurant, and yet our food and drink people made national headlines and hype reels again. It has not always been this way. After eras of deep-fried pain, we’re in a far better place.

Why? Because our seafood’s right there . Because our produce is among the best on the planet —and any cook will tell ya that using the world’s best ingredients is like running a 100-yard dash and starting at the 40-yard line. That’s why the top chefs have come. Plus, moms and pops who started cooking furiously four years ago (due to The Terrible Thing) are opening kitchens. The proximity to Mexico’s fire and ash and stew culture never hurts. So many reasons.

This list is a citywide tradition we’re honored to keep. You guys picked your favorites (with 41,000-plus votes, a new record), and I picked mine.

I switched it up a bit. I left out a few that have become institutional and duh-of-course. Once Addison landed three Michelin stars , no one needed to be told to go there. Same with Jeune et Jolie , a pinnacle of Frenchishness. I politely placed them over on Mt. Olympus and made room for other places that deserve that spotlight.

I’ve been lucky enough to document, study, and tell stories about food and drink for almost two decades. I did the math recently and realized I’d been to thousands of restaurants, tried tens of thousands of dishes. It’s been an obscenely obsessive career without complaints.

I know food better than I know myself. That said, I’ll never pretend my list is somehow the only valid take. It’s just mine. It’s the list I keep in my pocket and constantly update as I eat my way through the city and send to friends when they come to town and ask, “What should I eat in San Diego?”

I urge you to make your own. –Troy Johnson

Best time for travel italy's treasures art, food & wine of italy.

While just about any month is great to visit Italy, there are a few prime times of the year for the Italy’s Treasures tour. Here are some recommendations from our destination experts.

Throughout Italy, the most popular times to visit are April, May, June, September, and October. Along the coast, July and August are busy with locals and Europeans on summer holiday, while cities are usually less crowded.

Spring: In March, enjoy the calm before the summer season, especially Cinque Terre, which becomes quite crowded from April through October. While some seasonal attractions might not be open in early spring, countless opportunities to soak in the area’s beauty remain.

Fall: November is a fantastic time to visit Italy. The popular Cinque Terre becomes less crowded and even more enjoyable to explore.

Surround yourself in the beauty and grandeur found on the lakes of Northern Italy. Cruise along scenic Lago Maggiore passing the Borromean Islands sprinkled throughout this stunning lake. These petite but incredible islands are brimming with grand villas and exquisite, world-renowned gardens. Glide past Isola del Pescatore viewing the gulf of Baveno before making a stop at Isola Bella. Then we make our way along the cobblestone streets of the quaint town to the impressive, Baroque Borromean Palace and gardens. This famed palace is steeped in immeasurable wealth and regal pageantry. On your guided tour, surroundings will bring you back to the 17th century. Get a glimpse inside life as a royal as you stroll through the opulent halls superbly decorated with rare artwork and tapestries. Then, you’ll head outside to the perfectly manicured, tiered gardens that abut the lakeshore. Behold stunning views and the splendor of the gardens as we make our way through with an expert. Return to the boat for a cruise back to Stresa.

Experience the romance that can only be found in Venice – La Serenìssima – while traveling on its famous waterways. Partake in one of Venice’s most famous pastimes – a gondola cruise.
