The Wait-a-While Rainforest Tour takes you wildlife spotting by both day and NIGHT! Visiting the World Heritage Listed Wet Tropics Rainforest National Parks from Cairns, we have been hosting small (max 11 people) personal rainforest nocturnal wildlife spotlighting tours into the world’s oldest continuously surviving rainforest near Cairns for more than 30 years.

With an impressive success rate, we take our guests to the Atherton Tablelands to observe animals, such as the elusive platypus (we have a 90% + success rate) and the rare tree kangaroos, in their natural habitat as well as the nocturnal animals.

Cairns is a major tourist destination with thousands of visitors coming here each year to experience the Great Barrier Reef and yet relatively few discover the Cairns Tablelands (sometimes known as the Atherton Tablelands).

The Tablelands are within easy reach of Cairns offering a shorter drive time than any Daintree rainforest tours and greater rainforest wildlife spotlighting opportunities. This allows our tours to depart in the early afternoon. As the rainforest comes alive at night (80% of animals in Australia are nocturnal or more active at night), our spotlights enable us to capture the animals up in the canopy.

Our tour is best suited to active people who enjoy walking.  Part of the experience is the looking for the wildlife and that requires following trails through the forest.  The ground can be uneven and often muddy with medium inclines. So unfortunately we are not disable/wheelchair accessible. During the tour we usually cover around 3-4km on foot spread over at least 4 sites. The best time of day to spot wildlife in Australia is at dusk through to nighttime so you need to be comfy walking in the dark as well, however all the tracks we use at night are on flat safe ground.

Experiencing the  tropical rainforest at night is something you will remember, especially with an informative guide to help you understand this magnificent wildlife environment.

Tour Description: 

After being picked up from your hotel (please note for hotels in Port Douglas there is an extra $150 per booking pick up fee) we go in search of Australian native animals around Cairns on our rainforest wildlife spotlighting tour. We make a series of short drives to visit several locations so you get a taste for the variety of sights in this area. Your guide will then introduce you to some of the world’s most unusual animals, including the elusive platypus (we have a 90% success rate), tree kangaroos, possums, gliders, flying foxes, bandicoots, echidnas, snakes, frogs and many others.

On the tour we will also learn about the tropical rainforest and how local Aboriginal tribes use the vegetation to make tools and to heal and make remedies to solve everyday common ailments.

The magic of the rainforest comes to life after dark and welcomes you with a chorus of frog croaks and the sparkling of a million eyeshines.

A walking tour especially for nature enthusiasts and photographers in the heart of Cairns. Every Night Walk is different. Being in nature offers an exciting and unpredictable experience full of surprises.

The tour will introduce you to the much-loved White-lipped tree frogs, Northern Stony Creek frogs, and many other species of amphibians. For those who like spiders, there are many that can be seen on the tour such as Net-casting spiders, Mirror-ball Spiders, huge Orb-weavers, and Huntsmans. People not fond of spiders will be relieved to know that they are usually happily weaving their webs or sitting on tree trunks. We see an abundance of nocturnal insects like moths, crickets, beetles, and stick insects. Most of these animals only come out at night and therefore are unseen by most people.

Other animals that can be seen on a Let’s Go Buggin Night Walk include Micro-bats, Papuan Frogmouths, Striped Possums, Speckled Flying Foxes, Pythons, Bandicoots, Pademelons and Echidnas.

The tours offer a great opportunity for photographers who would love to just ‘go to’ that spot to capture amazing photographs of some nocturnal critters.

12:30pm – Pickup in Cairns

Experience the magical Great Barrier Reef Drive heading north on the region’s most scenic coastal highway. Observe the changes in habitat diversity as we get closer to the Daintree Tropical Rainforest.

2:15pm – Arrive at Solar Whisper Wildlife Cruise Cruise the beautiful Daintree River spotting wildlife on a quiet, clean solar electric boat with zero environmental impact. Get closer to nature… hear, smell & experience without noise & fumes. Afternoon tea included prior departure. We have a 99% success rate for spotting crocodiles, excellent bird watching opportunities and other wildlife such as snakes, frogs and fish and bats. The cruise is one hour.

4:00pm – Daintree Rainforest Every nature lover’s dream can be found in the Daintree National Park. Enter the lands of the local Kuku Yalanji people while taking in the beauty of the pristine rainforest, cool streams, towering mountains and freshwater valleys that captivate our visitors. This living museum is an area of ancient tropical rainforest spanning 120,000 hectares, making it the largest tropical rainforest in Australia. We walk numerous tracks to witness the complex ecosystems in this World Heritage Area and perhaps a swim during the summer months.

5:00pm – Cape Tribulation Beach This famous valley resembles a giant amphitheatre with a semicircle of hills dominated by Mt Sorrow (850m) and Mt Hemmant (1000m). From several lookouts the afternoon lighting on the beach is gorgeous. We often spend an hour exploring the natural assets of the coastline.

6:00pm – Dinner at Whet Restaurant Whet combines the natural wonder of the surrounding jungle with its unique and casual atmosphere. Located right in the heart of Cape Tribulation, and aptly named to “whet your appetite”, the delicious range of cuisine on offer at Whet Restaurant is sure to make your visit to the Daintree memorable.

7:00pm Night spotting in the Northern Daintree A wildlife tour in Far North Queensland is not complete without a night walk.
