Home / Business / CII ‘Destination East’ highlights Bengal’s tourism potential

eastern india travel mart

Department of Tourism, Government of West Bengal in collaboration with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Eastern Region, will be jointly hosting the 8th edition of Destination East, an international tourism buyer-seller Mart on January 18 and 19, 2018 at the Convention Centre, Rajarhat. This will be followed by an event at Gajoldoba on January 21, where participants, including international tour operators and travel agents, will promote tourist hotspots of North Bengal. The initiative was started in 2010 to promote inbound tourism in West Bengal. This year the meet will again focus on promotion of eastern Indian states as world-class tourism destinations.

Destination East will also focus on international tour operators and help them to look beyond the known tourist destinations and expand their business by promoting new destinations. There has been an endeavour at leveraging the heritage nostalgia, natural beauty, unique cuisines and the vast canvas of the history of West Bengal as tourism products. State chief minister, Mamata Banerjee, has been very enthusiastic and suggested initiatives like Durga Puja Carnival, Kolkata Christmas Festival, Bishnupur Music Festival, Teesta Rangeet Tourism Festival and many more. These events have been a major hit among international tourists, who flock to attend these world-class events.

The meet plans to highlight the natural advantages of West Bengal as a hub for Eastern India and also as an important part of the Buddhist Circuit along with neighbouring states of Bihar and Odisha. The idea is to make new and innovative tourism circuits, connecting not only the eastern and north-eastern states but also with neighbouring countries like Bhutan, Nepal etc.The prime focus of Destination East is not only to promote tourism with Kolkata as the gateway but also to turn it to a world class tourist destination among international buyers.

The efforts of the annual meet have paid rich dividends. In 2010, when the first meet was held, 30 international buyers responded from Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. The very next year, the number rose to 47 buyers from eight countries. More and more tourists have been attracted to explore eastern India. In 2013, it rose to 68 buyers from 20 countries. In the next two years, 25-26 countries joined the fray. In 2017, 98 buyers from 33 countries joined. Over the years, the initiative attracted around 450-odd international tour operators from various countries. These operators started bringing in foreign tourists to this part of the country. In 2016, West Bengal ranked 5th among the top 10 Indian states in terms of foreign tourist arrivals, far ahead of the much-hyped states like Rajasthan, Goa and Kerala. In terms of hosting domestic tourists, West Bengal ranks 8th in the country. There has also been a considerable rise in luxury room occupancy in Kolkata over the last couple of years.

This year, 100-odd international tour operators and media people from 30 countries are expected to participate in the international travel mart. State tourism department plans to showcaseGajoldoba as a potential tourist destination to the international tour operators during Destination East2018.

New Delhi : The Ministry of Tourism is showcasing India as a 365-day tourism destination at the Arabian Travel Mart being held in Dubai from May 6-9.

The pavilion has made a resounding entry, aiming to capture the entirety of the UAE market. Tourism Ministry unveils Cool Summers of India campaign

As the scorching summer sun bore down on travelers worldwide, the Union Tourism Ministry of India has embarked on a transformative journey to redefine summer vacations by unveiling the "Cool Summers of India" campaign at the three-day much-sought after  Arabian Travel Mart 2024 in Dubai from May 6.

The campaign is an invitation to global tourists to explore the lesser-known destinations of India's diverse landscapes during the summer season.

Moving away its focus from traditional tourism strategies, the campaign spotlighted 50 enchanting getaways across four corners of the country from the snow-capped peaks of Gulmarg, Patnitop, Auli in Jammu and Kashmir to the lush valleys of Wayanad in Kerala. The curated list of 50 summer hotspots getaways also include destinations like Pithoragarh, Auli, Chopta Valley, Binsar  in Uttarakhand; Bir Billing, Kinnaur and Tirath Valley in Himachal Pradesh giving travelers a wide range of options to explore, from serene hill stations to lush green valleys.

“By diverting attention from overcrowded tourist hotspots to these hidden treasures, the Ministry aims to reach out to a wider audience, including potential foreign tourists as well as alleviate strain on popular destinations and ensure that India’s summer getaways are not confined to domestic travelers alone,” said Rajnish Kaistha (Sr. Vice President) of the International Association of Tourists Operators (IATO).

The Ministry’s tagline says it all. “From the snowy peaks of the Himalayas to the misty hills of the Western Ghats, from the serene lakes of Kerala to the cascading waterfalls of Mizoram, India's got the coolest summer getaways that'll have you feeling frosty fresh!”

Moreover, leveraging social media channels like WhatsApp to disseminate information about these destinations, the Ministry has ensured that the campaign reaches a wider audience, including potential foreign tourists who may not be familiar with the hidden gems of India.

The campaign went live on Monday and social media handles of 'Incredible India' have already shared a teaser and some glimpses of this "segmented offering" in its run-up. Arabian Travel Mart is one of the key events in the global tourism arena.

It is largely targeted towards drawing the foreign tourists by challenging the notion that India is too hot for summer travel, as the Indian subcontinent has a range of weathers, sources had said here on May 3."The event marks a significant step in strengthening India's presence in the Middle East tourism market," the ministry said in a statement adding that an 'Incredible India' pavilion was inaugurated by Satish Kumar Sivan, Consul General of India to Dubai.

"The pavilion has made a resounding entry, aiming to capture the entirety of the UAE market. Leading a delegation comprising tour operators, luxury hotels, wellness resorts, and the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation, India is poised to showcase itself as a 365-day destination," the statement said.

India's participation in the Arabian Travel Mart 2024 holds immense potential for the tourism industry and the economy at large, they said.

The event provides a platform for the Indian tourism players to exhibit their offerings, forge alliances within the industry and attract visitors from the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region. This, in turn, is expected to bolster revenue generation and foster job creation within the tourism sector, the statement said.

It is largely targeted towards drawing the foreign tourists by challenging the notion that India is too hot for summer travel, as the Indian subcontinent has a range of weathers, sources had said here on May 3.

Arabian Travel Mart is one of the key events in the global tourism arena.

''The event marks a significant step in strengthening India's presence in the Middle East tourism market,'' the ministry said in a statement.

This digital campaign -- 'Cool Summers of India' -- challenges the notion of India being too hot for summer travel, emphasising its offerings in hill resorts, including the Himalayas. The campaign seeks to promote India as a holistic destination throughout the year, the officials said.

As part of this campaign, a two-phase list of sites has been drawn which will be revealed once the campaign goes live. Under phase one, a list of about 50 summer getaways have been chosen, most of these being in north India, the sources said on May 3.
