Another preseason Clasico, Barcelona-Real Madrid, coming to U.S. this summer

In what has become a burgeoning, money-making tradition , FC Barcelona and Real Madrid will bring their renowned rivalry to the United States for a second consecutive summer.

They'll play El Clasico, as its known, at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on July 29, as part of the second-year Soccer Champions Tour.

It will be a preseason match, of course. The tour — which will also feature Manchester United , Arsenal , Juventus and AC Milan — is not a tournament like some of its predecessors were. It is essentially eight one-off games, smack-dab in the middle of the Women's World Cup, billed by organizers as a "summer series" that will span California, Las Vegas, Texas and Florida.

But the headliner is the game of all games, perhaps the world's most celebrated sporting rivalry, at the grandiose stadium of all grandiose stadiums, Jerry World, the 105,000-seat home of the Dallas Cowboys that aspires to host the 2026 World Cup final .

El Clasico comes to the U.S.

When Barca and Madrid first brought their blood feud to the U.S. in 2017, the concept was ridiculed by some purists; but the exhibition game, at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, was a roaring success. The Miami Clasico drew 1.7 million viewers on ESPN platforms and a sellout crowd willing to pay several hundreds of dollars apiece for tickets. Players competed, genuinely. A 3-2 Barcelona win thrilled everybody involved.

It felt, at the time, like a watershed moment for the International Champions Cup , the preseason event that grew to 18 teams and 27 games spread across nine countries late last decade. In early 2020, organizers were in negotiations to inaugurate Southern California’s SoFi Stadium with a second stateside Clasico that summer.

But then came COVID-19. The ICC canceled its 2020 programming, fizzled during the pandemic, and devolved into a legal dispute between its parent company, Relevent Sports, and its mastermind, the legendary soccer promoter Charlie Stillitano. The men's ICC has not been played since.

Relevent still runs a women’s ICC and other ventures. This summer, it is working with England 's Premier League and Spain 's La Liga on two separate North American tours. But in 2022, the Soccer Champions Tour swooped in for Barca and Madrid, and organized a Clasico at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. (Barca won, 1-0, in front of a boisterous, sellout crowd.)

In its second year, the Soccer Champions Tour has expanded to feature two clubs each from Spain, England and Italy . Sixth Street, a global investment firm that has partnered with both Barca and Real Madrid , is the company behind it. AEG is producing it. Legends is a key partner. And Stillitano, according to a source with knowledge of the tour's evolution, has been involved as a consultant.

Preseason tour schedules

The Soccer Champions Tour announced its full 2023 slate Friday:

Saturday, July 22: Barcelona vs. Juventus — Levi’s Stadium, Santa Clara, California

Sunday, July 23: Real Madrid vs. AC Milan — Rose Bowl, Pasadena, California

Wednesday, July 26: Arsenal vs. Barcelona — SoFi Stadium, Inglewood, California

Wednesday, July 26: Real Madrid vs. Manchester United — NRG Stadium, Houston

Thursday, July 27: Juventus vs. AC Milan — Dignity Health Sports Park, Carson, California

Saturday, July 29: Barcelona vs. Real Madrid — AT&T Stadium, Arlington, Texas

Tuesday, August 1: AC Milan vs Barcelona — Allegiant Stadium, Las Vegas

Wednesday, August 2: Juventus vs. Real Madrid — Camping World Stadium, Orlando

Kickoff times haven’t yet been determined. In their Friday news release, organizers said that “the matches remain subject to approval by the relevant football authorities,” but that is likely a formality.

Separately, Arsenal and Manchester United have organized a preseason friendly at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on July 22. United is also set to play Wrexham on July 25 in San Diego — presumably with a reserve team, because one day later, it is now scheduled to play Real Madrid in Houston. It then plays Borussia Dortmund on July 30 in Vegas .

Arsenal will also play the MLS All-Stars on July 19 in Washington, D.C.

The Premier League's own "summer series" will feature Chelsea , Newcastle, Aston Villa , Fulham , Brighton and Brentford, with games in Philadelphia, Atlanta, Orlando, New Jersey and Maryland.

What Is Soccer Champions Tour 22? Why Real Madrid And Barcelona Are Coming To USA

  • Author: Robert Summerscales

Barcelona and Real Madrid announced on Friday that they will be featuring in the Soccer Champions Tour 22 in the USA this summer.

The two Spanish rivals will play each other in Las Vegas on July 23.

Barca and Real will also each face Juventus in July, in Dallas and Los Angeles respectively.

The other two games on the Soccer Champions Tour 22 fixture list are Juve vs Chivas in Vegas and Real vs Club America in San Francisco.

Barcelona will play two other friendlies in the States this summer - against Inter Miami on July 19 and New York Red Bulls on July 30 - but these games are not part of the Soccer Champions Tour.

So what is the Soccer Champions Tour?

What Is The Soccer Champions Tour?

It is a new event being organized by AEG.

Despite the games all being played under the Soccer Champions Tour banner, they are effectively one-off exhibition matches.

It is not a tournament so there will not be an overall winner, unlike in previous pre-seasons events such as the International Champions Cup.

All five matches will be played in the United States.

Soccer Champions Tour Fixtures

Why is it called the soccer champions tour.

Mainly because it sounds good.

Out of the five teams involved, only Real Madrid are reigning champions in any major competition - having won La Liga and the UEFA Champions League last season.

Barcelona and Juventus were both trophyless in the 2021/22 season, while Chivas and Club America have not won a title since 2018 and 2019 respectively.

But while all five participants are not currently champions, they have each been national champions at least 19 times in the past.

Are Tickets On Sale Yet?

Tickets will go on general sale for all matches on June 17.

May 12 / 2023.

Soccer Champions Tour today announced the launch and schedule for a new series of games featuring six of the world’s most iconic soccer clubs to be played this summer in major markets across the United States, including Spain’s FC Barcelona facing off against Italy’s AC Milan at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada on Tuesday, August 1, 2023 .

Soccer Champions Tour was created by a newly formed company of global investment firm Sixth Street to support the continued global growth of top-tier sports franchises by organizing high-profile, competitive events for the millions of fans that live outside the domestic markets of the biggest clubs.

“We are proud to be partnering with the world’s most storied clubs, which have the world’s strongest and most passionate supporters, to provide this rare opportunity for American fans to experience the game at the highest level,” said Alan Waxman, Co-Founder and CEO at Sixth Street. “While this year’s tour consists of men’s clubs, we look forward to expanding next summer to bring the world’s best women’s clubs to local audiences around the globe, and in the future to evolve this series into a format with real games of consequence.”

In addition to men’s and women’s professional club matches, the tour also intends to organize elite youth academy competitions in the years to come.

Soccer Champions Tour is working closely with global premium experiences company Legends to bring these marquee matchups and elevated in-game experiences to local fans of the game.

Added Shervin Mirhashemi, CEO, Legends: “Legends is proud to bring fans of the beautiful game this unforgettable experience this summer and deliver a fan experience that will match the world-class soccer on the pitch. We can’t wait to see stadiums filled across the United States with fans cheering on some of the best clubs in the world as they compete in the Soccer Champions Tour."

The 2023 Soccer Champions Tour is being produced in partnership with AEG, the world's leading sports and live entertainment company.

“AEG is excited about the partnership with Soccer Champions Tour and Legends to bring the most successful soccer clubs in the world to fans across the U.S.,” said Tom Braun, Sr. Vice President, Soccer & Business Operations and Business Development at AEG. “Every matchup in this series is of the highest caliber and we’re thrilled that American soccer fans will have the opportunity to see these epic games featuring legendary teams live and in person.”

Barcelona parte rumbo a Estados Unidos con una sorpresa entre los pasajeros

Barcelona parte rumbo a Estados Unidos con una sorpresa entre los pasajeros

This tie remains in the balance after a 2-2 draw at the Allianz Arena in the first leg. Vinicius Junior struck twice for Real Madrid whilst Leroy Sane and Harry Kane got on the scoresheet for Bayern Munich.

Vinicius has now scored five goals with five assists in eight Champions League games this season. Kane's record is even better with eight goals and three assists in 11 matches. Sane has just two goals and two assists in 11 games in the competition this campaign.

Real Madrid won La Liga last weekend after they defeated Cadiz 3-0 and Barcelona lost to Girona. Brahim Diaz, Jude Bellingham and Joselu got on the scoresheet against Cadiz.

Bellingham did not have the best game against Bayern during the first leg as he was suffering from an illness. However, he now looks back to his best and will surely play an important role against the German side this week.

The Champions League is Bayern's only hope of winning silverware this season. It would be very unfortunate for them to not win a trophy in Kane's first season at the club. The England captain is yet to win a major trophy in his career and left Tottenham Hotspur in search of these. However, if his side cannot get past Real Madrid then he will have to wait until the next campaign.

BARCELONA-REAL MADRID

🏆 champions league up for grabs.

untitled-design-2024-05-06t175851-439.png

The last step on the road to Wembley lies ahead of four teams this week, none of whom have been conclusively eliminated from contention at the halfway mark of the semifinals. Paris Saint-Germain have the most work to do and perhaps the most to fear if they fail to overcome their first leg deficit against Borussia Dortmund at the Parc des Princes on Tuesday. Falling to a team they were such heavy favorites against would bring enough questions in the first place, that it would almost certainly be their last dance with Kylian Mbappe will only heighten the sense that PSG's wait for European glory is not ending any time soon.

Their task will be harder without Lucas Hernandez, the center back paying a heavy price for his attempts to deny Niclas Fullkrug the winner in the Westfalenstadion last week. He will miss not only the run in but Euro 2024 and Luis Enrique does not have anyone quite as solid to take his place, with Lucas Beraldo expected to step in ahead of Milan Skriniar. Still, further forward there are fairly easy tweaks for the coaching staff to make that may pay dividend, as Jonathan Johnson noted after the first leg.

  • Johnson: "Expect Luis Enrique to tweak his attacking approach slightly going into that one with Mbappe's positioning and involvement much better in the second half and [Ousmane] Dembele in need of a slightly more clinical edge in front of goal. Randal Kolo Muani's cameo was interesting in terms of workrate but it might be Goncalo Ramos' predatory touch which makes the difference next week depending on Paris' approach to the scenario which still favors PSG -- just about."

Get Mbappe right and it may not matter if Julian Ryerson repeats his impressive display from leg one. PSG might just have enough going for them to be slight favorites.

Don't miss more from Johnson as he looks at PSG's homefield advantage .

It looks like the same equation for the home team on Wednesday night when Real Madrid host Bayern Munich after their exhilarating, somewhat chaotic, 2-2 draw in the Allianz Arena last time out. Vinicius Junior twice punished mistakes from Min-Jae Kim, scrubbing out a bright second half from the Bavarians where Leroy Sane and Harry Kane had thrust them into the lead. That was rather Bayern's season in microcosm, some of the best underlying metrics in Europe undone by clumsy work at the back. The outgoing Thomas Tuchel was all too prepared to make that implication clear, criticizing Kim for being "greedy" in his defending.

Bayern proved that when they get their defending right, they can do quite the number on Madrid, but we have long since reached the stage where it seems shrewd to price in some some of that mastery of their own fortune that Carlo Ancelotti's side show on nights like this. Madrid survived late onslaughts from RB Leipzig and Manchester City to get this far, might there just be something about this competition that give them the remorseless self belief to manufacture what would look like luck for anyone else? There'll be more time to discuss this game in Wednesday's newsletter, but for now get hyped people. This is the good stuff.

🔗 Midfield Link Play

🤩 messi rains down the assists to make history.

untitled-design-2024-05-06t175641-629.png

I'm going to start by quibbling with just how assist-y some of those assists were -- Matias Rojas had quite a bit to do when his captain rolled him the ball at 1-0 down to New York Red Bulls -- but when you put up five of them it's probably going to be the case that the scorer has to do the brunt of the work at least once or twice. Anyway, the brilliance with which Messi played in Luis Suarez for Inter Miami's fifth was worth two assists as he drove through midfield with his No.9 and stopped in time to find space on the edge of the box to play a killer pass.

For the first time in MLS history, a player registered six goal involvements in a game: teeing up Suarez to register a hat trick, laying on another for Rojas and delivering one of those delicate clipped finishes across the goalkeeper to get on the scoresheet himself. Meanwhile, Inter Miami records are being obliterated before Messi has even reached a calendar year in Florida. He is already the all-time assist leader at the Herons, and with 23 goals from 25 games it is a matter of when, not if, he obliterates Gonzalo Higuain's high-water mark of 29.

That Messi would be the best player MLS had ever seen was never in doubt when he landed in Miami last summer. The only question was whether he would still be motivated to be the best version of himself having left Europe behind. The 36 year old might just be that and his team mates can attest to the standards it is driving from them. Rojas spoke to Deporte Total USA after the match on how great the demands are when you play with the great man.

  • Rojas:  "It's a big responsibility. There are two ways to approach playing with him, you can either sink or you can swim. In my opinion, he is the best in history. You can either play with the fact he will not understand your pressure or you let it go, and he solves all that with what he does. That pass to me for my second goal was something I didn't expect, but it makes it easier for you. You need to take advantage of that chemistry, and me and the team did just that."

No wonder Inter Miami are three points clear at the top of the Eastern Conference with a record of six wins and a draw from the seven games their best player has started. Messi seems to be in the mood. "I don't think we will ever see anything like that again," said Miami's head coach Tata Martino after the game. If Messi feels like it, though, we might just.

2024 UEFA Champions League final: All you need to know

Friday, July 14, 2023

Article summary

The 2023/24 UEFA Champions League final will take place at London's historic Wembley Stadium.

Article top media content

Wembley Stadium in London will host the 2024 Champions League final on Saturday 1 June

Article body

The best of the best will be crowned on the ultimate stage when the 2023/24 UEFA Champions League season concludes at London's prestigious Wembley Stadium on Saturday 1 June.

This is the 69th season of Europe's elite club competition and the 32nd since it was renamed the UEFA Champions League.

Where is the Champions League final?

The highlight of European football's club calendar returns to the London venue for a record eighth time, and the third in the UEFA Champions League era following the 2011 and 2013 finals.

Wembley has undergone a massive transformation since it hosted the last old-style European Champion Clubs' Cup final in 1992 , the famous twin towers arena making way for a new venue symbolised by the gigantic arch. Boasting a seated capacity of around 90,000, the new Wembley reopened its doors in 2007 and is once again home to the England national side, as well as host to the nation's premier domestic cup finals.

Upcoming Champions League finals

2024 : Wembley Stadium, London 2025 : Fussball Arena München, Munich

Known as the 'Home of Football', Wembley has hosted seven European Cup finals – more than any other stadium. AC Milan defeated Benfica 2-1 in Wembley's first European final in 1963 before Manchester United became the competition's first English winners thanks to their 4-1 extra-time triumph against the same Portuguese side in 1968.

In 1971, Ajax beat Panathinaikos 2-0 to lift the trophy for the first time, and there was also a 1-0 victory for Liverpool against Club Brugge in 1978. Barcelona then won their first European Cup there in 1992 with a 1-0 extra-time defeat of Sampdoria , and claimed the trophy for the fourth time in 2011 after overcoming Manchester United 3-1 . Finally, Bayern beat Dortmund 2-1 in the all-German decider in 2013.

Wembley Stadium hosted all three of England's Group D games at UEFA EURO 2020 , as well as two round of 16 matches, both semi-finals and the final itself , with the hosts only denied their maiden triumph in the competition on penalties against Italy. The outcome was more successful for England at UEFA Women's EURO 2022, as the Lionesses overcame Germany 2-1 after extra time to become European champions for the first time.

The original Wembley Stadium, known as the Empire Stadium, was built as the centrepiece of a British Empire Exhibition a few years after the First World War, and was first opened in April 1923. It would serve as the focal point of English football until 2000, being demolished in 2003 to make way for the current structure.

The old Wembley hosted the 1948 Olympic Games and the final of EURO '96 but, from an English perspective, unquestionably its finest hour came on 30 July 1966, when Geoff Hurst scored a hat-trick to inspire England to a 4-2 extra-time win against West Germany in the FIFA World Cup final.

Who is playing in the Champions League final?

The finalists will be confirmed after the semi-final second legs on 7/8 May.

How to watch the Champions League final

Details of where to watch the Champions League final will appear here.

Champions League final format

If the score is level at the end of normal time, two 15-minute periods of extra time are played. If one of the teams scores more goals than the other during extra time, that team is declared the winner. If the score remains level after extra time, the winner is determined by a penalty shoot-out.

Who is the referee for the Champions League final?

The refereeing team will be announced in the lead-up to the final.

Where are the other 2024 club competition finals?

2024 Europa League final : Dublin Arena, Dublin, Republic of Ireland 2024 Women's Champions League final : San Mamés Stadium, Bilbao, Spain 2024 Europa Conference League final : AEK Arena, Athens, Greece

What do the Champions League winners get?

The UEFA Champions League trophy stands 73.5cm tall and weighs 7.5kg. "It may not be an artistic masterpiece, but everybody in football is keen to get their hands on it," said creator Jürg Stadelmann.

The winners will also earn the right to play against the winners of the 2023/24 UEFA Europa League in the 2024 UEFA Super Cup.

“We weren’t perfect, but it’s good to get the result when you’re not playing at your best.

“I’ve never won in Paris, so it’s a good time to try for the first time.

“It’s 90 minutes to the final, and we all want to get there. We are close but not over the finish line.”

The scoreline could have been anything

Fullkrug’s fine finish on the counter separates the sides in an even tie on a night of nonstop attacks and chances for both.

PSG trail 1-0, but they will fancy this in Paris.

Full-time: Borussia Dortmund 1-0 Paris Saint-Germain

A night of endless chances, but no more to report at the end.

Four minutes of added time

It’s quite incredible that PSG haven’t scored. Let alone that Dortmund haven’t scored more.

90+1 minutes: Borussia Dortmund 1-0 Paris Saint-Germain

Ruiz is unmarked but heads over

Zaire-Emery chips a ball in behind the Dortmund back line and Ruiz runs onto it.

Completely unmarked from 10 yards, he heads over. Both sides have forgotten their shooing boots it seems.

87 minutes: Borussia Dortmund 1-0 Paris Saint-Germain

Brandt blocked before Fullkrug heads over

The forward is slipped through by Sancho, but a last-ditch sliding tackle blocks the shot.

Sancho picks up the ball again and crosses for Fullkrug, but he heads over.

The forward was looking fatigued and the 34-year-old veteran takes his place.

PSG break through on the inside right and the ball is laid off for Dembele.

The forward leans back from 12 yards (11 metres) out and skies his shot.

80 minutes: Borussia Dortmund 1-0 Paris Saint-Germain

PSG comeback on the stats

The away side have had three shots on target to the home side’s four.

The possession is 55-45 in PSG’s favour. It’s a quiet passage of play in the middle of the half.

76 minutes: Borussia Dortmund 1-0 Paris Saint-Germain

Dembele denied the equaliser for PSG

Mbappe lifts the ball in between two defenders with a dink and Dembele runs onto the pace but his first-time shot is saved.
