The top affordable summer destinations in the U.S. for 2024

WalletHub shares this year's perfect getaways that won't break the bank

Erika Mailman

Summer’s just a heartbeat away. If you’re stuck in your cubicle, or you’re a teacher showing movies for the next week or so, or maybe you’re a high-powered CEO getting off your private jet: you’re fantasizing about the beach or a tent pitched in the wilderness...or a visit to the big metropolis you’ve always dreamed of.

According to personal-finance website WalletHub , nearly 82 percent of Americans plan to take a trip this summer (hopefully the remaining 18 percent aren’t traveling this summer because they already took off in the winter!). And close to half of those who plan to travel will take more than one trip (42 percent). That’s a whole lot of us—whether it’s far-flung travel or just renting a weekend space an hour away. We personally love the day trip turned into an overnight trip. WalletHub studied 100 metro areas, using 41 metrics, to come up with its list of the perfect summer getaways, considering our budgets and hopes to have a great time without credit card trauma down the road. The metrics were details like the average price of a two-person meal, the city's tennis courts and beer gardens, and average gas prices: you get the idea. It’s a great way to get a quick look at how a city measures up to others around the country.

This summer, you will want to hit Atlanta , since it is the top scorer on this study. It did well in all categories, including not having many travel hassles and costs, having good weather and a fair amount of entertainment options, and doing well in terms of safety (having low numbers for property damage and violent crime). Take a walk on the BeltLine or visit the Coke museum, and enjoy the best of Georgia’s capital.

Second on the list is Washington, D.C. It scored first for safety and did well in the other categories. With parks, cherry blossoms, historical sites, and an incredible art museum , this city makes for an incredible destination. Did we mention that the Smithsonian museums are free and are open daily except for Dec. 25?

In third place is Orlando, Florida, which fulfills all the amusement park -meets-beach desires you’ve ever had. In fact, Orlando is No. 2 nationwide for best activities (the No. 1 spot is taken by urban Honolulu, which is fourth on this overall list).

Here is the full list of the top 20 summer travel destinations:

1. Atlanta, GA

2. Washington, DC

3. Orlando, FL

4. Honolulu, HI

5. Tampa, FL

6. Austin, TX

7. Philadelphia, PA

8. Chicago, IL

Europe is the dream vacation destination for many Americans, but the prices in some cities can be a nightmare. If you have a middle-class income and are eyeing an affordable European vacation, then you can forget about traveling to most Swiss cities — as well other pricey locales like Paris, Monte Carlo and Copenhagen. On the bright side, there are numerous European destinations that won’t break the bank .

You don’t have to sacrifice the usual amenities, either. There are plenty of European cities that fit a middle-class budget and also offer the combination of charm, culture, cuisine, scenery and history you want out of a European vacation.

Here are nine European vacation destinations even the middle class can afford (listed alphabetically).

Athens, Greece

The 2023 Post Office City Costs Barometer ranked Athens as the cheapest location for an autumn city break in Europe, Conde Nast reported. Hotels in Athens are of “particularly good value,” with prices at some central locations as low as $70 a night.

Budapest, Hungary

Hungary’s capital offers plenty of free attractions, including Heroes’ Square and the Széchenyi Chain Bridge. Dining is affordable as well, with coffee and drinks averaging around $2 each and multicourse meals (including a bottle of wine) averaging about $20 or less per person, U.S. News & World Report detailed.

Klagenfurt, Austria

Conde Nast calls Klagenfurt one of Austria’s “most affordable” cities to visit. You can get a main course at many restaurants for only $7 or so — and if you’re looking for an even better bargain you can visit the farmers’ market on Benediktinerplatz. June is the cheapest time to go, before the city fills up with summer crowds.

Lille, France

If you want to soak up the French experience in all its cultural and gastronomic glory, Lille is a much cheaper alternative to Paris. Cultural attractions average about $15 in Lille, and you can stay at the five-star L’Hermitage Gantois hotel, which was built in the 15th century, at starting rates of less than $220 a night.

Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon is a great spot for foodies on a budget. You can enjoy a three-course meal for two with a bottle of house wine for an average price of $42, according to the Post Office City Costs Barometer . For affordable five-star hotel accommodations, consider the 1908 Lisboa Hotel, which costs about $200 a night.

Prague, Czech Republic

According to the U.S. News, you won’t have to “dish out too much dough” to experience Prague because many of its main attractions are free. These include wandering around Old Town Square, the Charles Bridge and Petrín Hill. You can also find five-star hotels for less than $350 a night here, plus plenty of three- and four-star accommodations for even less.

Valencia, Spain

This beautiful beach destination has fewer crowds and lower costs than Barcelona and other Spanish coastal cities. You can often find flights and train routes from Barcelona or Madrid to Valencia for less than $100 round trip, U.S. News reported. There’s plenty to do here as well, with popular sites including Plaza del Ayuntamiento, Museum of Fine Arts and Central Market.

Vilnius, Lithuania

The Post Office City Costs Barometer ranked Vilnius ranked No. 2 as an overall affordable European destination, No. 1 for most affordable accommodations, No. 4 for lowest-priced meals and No. 5 for lowest-cost cultural attractions. You can stay at a four-star hotel, such as the Congress Avenue Hotel, for as little as $53 per night.

Zagreb, Croatia

The average cost in Zagreb for a three-course dinner for two with a bottle of house wine is $61, and the average cost to visit cultural attractions such as museums and heritage sites is $12.50. One of the best ways to spend a day is to walk around the city center and enjoy the grand architecture and many boutiques.

Shop TODAY favorite vacation spots:

Chiang mai, thailand, denver, colorado, disney cruise line, jackson hole, wyoming, the maldives, myrtle beach, south carolina, wisconsin dells, wisconsin, best vacation spots for families with teens, african safari.

Best for ages: 15-18

Here’s why: Simply put, teens deserve to be treated to the ultimate dream family vacation before they fly the coop.

Do this: Book an all-inclusive package with flights (dealing with logistics in Africa can be tricky) offered by a tour operator like The Luxury Safari Company . For families with teens, they recommend visiting Sosian Lodge in the north of Kenya. In seven nights, families can strengthen bonds and have one-of-a-kind experiences while fly camping (sleeping in the bush), river tubing, working on an African cattle farm and even visiting with predator research teams. Of course, there are plenty of game drives and walking safaris, so teens can get the most epic of photos for Instagram.

Stay here: Ask for the Family Cottage at Sosian Lodge , set on 60,000 acres of Kenyan wilderness meets working cattle ranch. Another great option is Puku Ridge Camp in Zambia. Teens staying at this lodge in South Luangwa National Park will appreciate the private plunge pools and opportunities to meet school children in local villages. Finally, for the teen who insists on having good Wi-Fi and access to tennis courts or mountain biking (not easy to find in the African bush), there’s Feline Fields in Botswana’s Kalahari Desert.

More info: TheLuxurySafariCompany.com

Butler County, Ohio

Best for ages: 13-16

Here’s why: This best of the Midwest destination proves that even inner-city teens can have fun in flyover states. Butler County also makes for a great halfway point for families coming from different coasts.

Do this: Teens who identify as foodies will love the aptly named Donut Trail where they can get their donut passport stamped at each of the funky boutique donut shops along the trail. (There is exactly a baker’s dozen!) Teens who collect all 13 stamps can collect a free T-shirt. Aspiring equestrians can get their horse fix at any of the area’s stables where they can rent horses or join a group ride. Teens who want to learn or practice wakeboarding will have a blast at Wake Nation . With its unique cable-tow system, no boat is required and beginners can learn at slower speeds. And for the ultimate rush, drive 30 minutes south to Cincinnati for indoor skydiving at iFly .

Stay here: Hueston Woods Lodge and Conference Center is just a few minutes by car from Miami University — one of the oldest public universities in the U.S. Guests can enjoy archery, community bonfires, badminton, nature trails and access to Acton Lake and Heuston Woods State Park .

Charleston, South Carolina

Best for ages: 13-18

Do this: “For the slower-paced families, Sullivan’s Island is absolutely gorgeous and worthwhile," says Brittany Betts, a travel expert with  Florida Panhandle . "The beach there is well-kept and quiet, but there’s also a cute town full of unique shops and restaurants down the main strip. The reason why it’s combined with Charleston is because they are so near one another and this would be for the more fast-paced families that like doing several attractions,” she continues.

“There’s so much history in just this small town, but there’s also a large market in the area, cute restaurants with live music, and unique tours in old dungeons and through gardens that are really informative and fun for teenagers,” Betts explains.

Stay here: If you're looking for an affordable hotel option, the Courtyard Charleston Mount Pleasant is a great choice. Complete with outdoor pool, your teen will love relaxing after a long day of sightseeing.

"Surprisingly I’ve been to Chiang Mai twice! I went once as a teen on a high school trip and then again as a grownup with my parents. I can’t say enough nice things about Thailand, the people are truly the kindest you’ll ever meet, and the nature is unmatched, it’s almost like the colors are brighter in Thailand. Some of the activities I got up to were exploring temples, checking out the night markets and getting to try a traditional Thai massage (I still think about it to this day)." — Vivien Moon, commerce editor at Shop TODAY

Here’s why: Chiang Mai is a safe, affordable, entry-level destination in Asia where families can learn about one of the most welcoming cultures on earth. It’s also where you can feed growing teenage boys on $10 a day.

Do this: Volunteer at one of Chiang Mai’s many elephant sanctuaries. While most weekly programs are only for ages 18+, Elephant Nature Park has one-night programs open to families with kids of all ages. Spend the day watching the elephants bathe in the river before helping to feed and walk them, and rest during the night in a traditional bamboo hut. In the ancient walled city, visit Chiang Mai’s 117 Buddhist temples, and even sign up for a monk chat at a wat to learn more about the religion and how most Thai boys spend their early teenage years becoming monks. Sign up for a Muay Thai camp or a cooking class including a shopping trip to some of Southeast Asia’s most colorful markets. Schedule your trip for November if you think your teen will love the world-famous Yi Peng Lantern Festival or in April for Songkran , the world’s largest water fight (where weapons include everything from buckets to squirt guns and hoses) held in conjunction with the Thai New Year.

Stay here: With its rooftop pool, a rarity in Chiang Mai, it’s hard to beat Akyra Manor . Teens will appreciate its location in the hip, artist-influenced neighborhood of Nimman. Between its spacious suites and being within walking distance of the lively night market, Anantara Chiang Mai Resort is also teen-approved.

"My parents and I had a wonderful trip to Costa Rica last year, thanks to all the accommodations/activities that Caribe Fun Tours planned for our itinerary. We started our trip at Hotel Costa Verde in Manuel Antonio, which had jungle views, pools around the property, yoga in the mornings and was walking distance from the beach. In Manuel Antonio, we enjoyed ocean kayaking and snorkeling and a guided hike in Manuel Antonio National Park . We ended our trip at Hotel El Silencio del Campo in La Fortuna, which had volcano views, hot springs around the property, a farm and garden to explore and a complimentary breakfast." —  Lauren Witonsky , associate editor at Shop TODAY

Here’s why: Teens are notoriously moody, but that won't stop them from enjoying Costa Rica , often called the happiest country on earth. Show them rainforests, volcanos, white sand beaches and what the "pura vida" life is all about.

Do this: Soar through the canopy in Monteverde, the high altitude cloudforest where ziplining for tourism was pioneered and the rest of the world followed suit. Sky Adventures Monteverde Park also has an aerial tram and a hanging bridges tour where you can see the levels of the cloudforest and its biodiversity up close. Teens who want to say they’ve climbed a volcano can do so at Cerro Chato, next to Arenal, the country’s most famous volcano and one of the most active in the world. No trip to Costa Rica is complete without a visit to its beaches, stretching for miles along both the Caribbean and Pacific. Learn to surf in the funky town of Tamarindo at Iguana Surf where the instructors all speak English and no one goes home without having caught their own wave. Hike in the tropical waterfront paradise that is Manuel Antonio National Park — Costa Rica’s answer to Yellowstone. (You can laugh at them, but don’t feed the monkeys.)

Stay here: If your teens are feeling a need to binge their favorite show while on vacation, they’ll love the turbo speed Wi-Fi at Tierra Magnifica , a luxury boutique property in the surf community of Nosara. (You’ll love the panoramic views and sense of safety.) If an all-inclusive is more your speed, teens will appreciate dining options and beachfront activities at The Westin Reserva Conchal.

"Even though I went as an adult for the first time, I can say that I would’ve probably been obsessed with Denver if I was a teenager. The variety of teen-friendly activities I hit up when I was there brought me back to my younger years. From gawking at all of the vintage aircraft and space shuttles at Wings Over The Rockies to leisurely perusing the stunning exhibitions at the Denver Botanic Gardens and the Museum of Contemporary Art to taking in America’s favorite sport at Coors Field , Denver’s just a quintessentially cool city to explore." —  Jess Bender , senior editor at Shop TODAY

Sierra Hoeger, an associate editor at Shop TODAY (pictured below), has spent time close to Denver on vacation — more specifically, at Rocky Mountain National Park . She says, "Rocky Mountain National Park and the surrounding areas proved to be the perfect family vacation for my sister and I in our teens/early 20’s. We’re a pretty outdoorsy family and it seemed to have activities the entire family could enjoy, from hiking to checking out local coffee shops, visiting sites from our favorite movies and doing some shopping. We’ve been itching to get back ever since we first visited!"

Here’s why: The Mile High City is a must for families with teens who want to play in the mountains but have big city amenities.

Do this: Social media mavens can start the day at the Denver Selfie Museum where the backdrops are just as Insta-worthy as the surrounding Rockies. Or capture those tricks for TikTok at the 60,000-square-foot Denver Skate Park . Aspiring artists will want to check out the myriad collections at the Denver Art Museum (18 and under are free). In the winter, adrenaline junkies can’t skip a trip to Ruby Hill Rail Yard, an urban terrain park and snowboarder’s paradise.

Stay here: For golf fans, the Kimpton Hotel Monaco Denver is a perfect choice if you're looking for a hole in one, and it's within walking distance of most of the city’s downtown sites.

“I went on a Disney Cruise with my mom in my very early twenties and we had the best time, it’s definitely a must-do for any Disney-loving family. Some people might think it’s just for little kids (which it definitely has tons of kids activities) but there’s something for every age on the ship with a touch of Disney magic. There’s amazing live shows, character interactions and each ship goes somewhere different so you’ll get a different experience port-wise depending on which cruise you take!” — Shannon Garlin , an associate editor at Shop TODAY

Best for ages: 13-17

Here’s why: Cruises remain popular with families with teens for a reason; they’re less stress for you and teens love the independence. Thanks to owning everything from the “Frozen” franchise to “Star Wars” and Marvel, Disney can keep all kids — from toddlers to teens — entertained.

Do this: Book any Disney Cruise Line voyage on Disney Dream or Disney Fantasy. (Family Caribbean or Alaskan cruise in 2024, anyone?) Both ships promise “ultra-cool plush pads” designed exclusively for teens. The official teen club, Vibe, is a 9,000-square-foot indoor and outdoor oasis that only teens, using their Key to the World card, have access to. Vibe (ages 14-17) has a fountain bar, a 103-inch LCD TV, plenty of video game pods and two pools. Edge, the lounge for tweens (ages 11-14) has similar amenities as well as a lighted dance floor, a 10-foot-tall cinema, a photo booth and individual computer stations.

" Jackson, Wyoming  is for the outdoorsy kid who loves skiing, snowboarding or simply building a snowman. They have the National Elk Refuge and is an iconic place to take pics and watch wildlife up and close. My favorite activity was riding on a fat bike and just enjoying the scenic views with the Teton Mountain Range as the backdrop.” —  Jannely Espinal , a commerce writer at Shop TODAY

Here’s why: Jackson Hole is a year-round vacation destination and convenient home base for exploring two of the country’s most popular national parks. With its small-town setting (population 10,500) where everything is within walking distance, teens can easily explore on their own.

Do this: Ski or snowboard together at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort , one of the most iconic ski resorts in the world. Rent bikes and ride 56 miles of paved paths or 115 miles of mountain bike trails, most with striking valley views. Since a family who rafts together stays together, battle the rapids on the Snake River or go for a scenic floating safari in search of moose, elk, bears and more. No trip to Jackson is complete without venturing into Yellowstone National Park via the equally stunning Grand Teton National Park .

Stay here: Located at the base of Snow King Mountain Resort , Snow King Resort is Jackson Hole’s best option for families who want immediate access to all kinds of outdoor adventures. Ski, snowboard, tube or — if you visit outside of winter — ride the mountain coaster and alpine slide. There’s also a massive mountain-top ziplining course, fly fishing and stargazing readily available for the curious teen.

Los Cabos, Mexico

Here’s why: With several daily nonstop flights from major cities in the U.S., it’s easy and affordable to reach this beautiful international beach destination. Los Cabos is a drier alternative to Cancun, plus you don’t have to worry about hurricane season.

Do this: Between the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific, take advantage of the year-round swells and learn or practice surfing in Los Cabos. There are approximately 1,000 miles of coastline, so it’s never too crowded. Teens keener on marine life can snorkel and dive alongside the likes of friendly sea lions and ominous-looking, yet harmless, hammerhead sharks. Other animal encounters include camel safaris in the outback. Despite its proximity to water, Los Cabos’s breathtaking landscape includes a desert playground. For a high-speed tour, opt for an off-road ATV or UTV excursion with Cactus Tours . For the best value, buy the Park Pass at Wild Canyon Adventures , which gives teens access to unlimited ziplining, horseback riding, bikes, a hanging bridge and more. The price even includes an ATV or UTV tour, as well as a bungee jump or giant swing ride.

Stay here: Esperanza, Auberge Resorts Collection has a teen club with a recording studio. Grand Velas Los Cabos ’ teen club has lots of games (including an Xbox Kinect), a bar serving non-alcoholic drinks and even an in-house DJ spinning the latest beats every night until midnight.

"I went to the Maldives for my honeymoon in 2019 and stayed at Joali . It’s definitely a luxury property but I felt it was worth it after all the hours we spent on airplanes getting there for such a milestone event." — Adrianna Brach, the editorial director at Shop TODAY

Here’s why: You don’t have to be on your honeymoon to visit the Maldives . With its 1,190 islands, it’s a tropical paradise with lots for teens to do. An obvious bucket list destination, it’s also easy to justify taking when it could be your last vacation as a family.

Do this: Try new watersports like wakeboarding, kitesurfing, jet blades and even hydrofoils (which could be deemed more of an air sport). Become PADI-certified (ages 10+) and take an underwater family holiday card you’ll never forget. Since every other kid wants to be a marine biologist when they grow up, why not learn about conservation by transplanting coral, planting a tree or helping rehabilitate endangered sea turtles? Treat them to a treatment at Spa by ESPA at Joali Maldives where there’s a special menu for teens.

Stay here: Amilla has a program for older kids and teens including fire dancing lessons, guitar lessons, mocktail making classes and even nighttime glow rider bicycle tours. One & Only Reethi Rah also has a teen program, One Tribe, with dedicated teens-only chill space. And for adrenaline lovers? Stay at the Four Seasons at Landaa Giraavaru , which boasts a Mastercraft X55 boat that makes its own surf and comes complete with sound system.

If you're searching for a destination where your teen will thrive, look no further. My [Wise] parents took me and my two siblings to Myrtle Beach almost every spring break where we spent the week relaxing on the beach, shopping at Broadway at the Beach and eating our way through the city.

Here’s why: There are several reasons Myrtle Beach welcomes nearly 20 million visitors annually. For starters, there are more than 50 beaches to choose from, several world-class golf courses to conquer and one of the country’s biggest boardwalks selling limitless fun.

Do this: Teens anxious to drive can get behind the wheel of their own go-kart and race on six different tracks at the Broadway Grand Prix . Teens aspiring to join the PGA Tour will want to play at one of the area’s 90 golf courses which host junior opens throughout the year. (There’s also a Top Golf if you can’t get a tee time.) Meanwhile, young fans of "The Walking Dead" won’t want to miss the AMC hit show-themed escape room , and fans of "The Simpsons," The Simpsons in 4D . Teens wanting to hang out with other teens can easily do so on the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk and Promenade , home to one of the country’s tallest Ferris wheels. Of course, there are also plenty of beach activities including surfing, wakeboarding and horseback riding to choose from.

Porto, Portugal

Best for ages: 16+

Here’s why: Practically crime-free, extremely cheap and small enough to be walkable, Porto is the perfect European city to give teens a taste of independence. Located where the Douro River meets the Atlantic, its proximity to the beach and the Douro Valley ensures there is plenty to do.

Do this: Visit the world-famous “Harry Potter library” — Livraria Lello . Teens not afraid of sharks can learn to surf with Onda Pura . Take a scenic boat or train ride to the Douro Valley, the world’s oldest demarcated wine region where teens (16+) are legally allowed to taste wine and — more importantly — learn how it’s made.

Stay here: The breakfast buffet at The Lodge Wine & Business Hotel will satisfy any growing teen, and its picturesque outdoor pool is a rarity in this city founded in 1123.

More info: VisitPortugal.com

Reno Tahoe, Nevada

Here’s why: Reno Tahoe is a unique destination where mountains meet desert. It’s where annual events include the Zombie Crawl, the Great Reno Balloon Race, the National Championship Air Races and — last but certainly not least — Burning Man.

Do this: Venture downtown to take iconic Instagram shots of the murals (there are more than 100) and to pose for pics with the Burning Man sculptures . Embrace your inner Flintstone and bowl at the National Bowling Stadium , also called the “Taj Mahal of Tenpins.” Another good rainy day activity for teens is a trip to Need 2 Speed , an indoor go-kart racing track open seven days a week. It also boasts blacklight mini golf and a VR game. Beautiful weather? Drive to nearby Lake Tahoe to kayak in the crystal clear water or hit the slopes at one of the area’s renowned resorts. Teens can also explore hundreds of miles of hiking and mountain biking trails year-round.

Stay here: The coolest hotel in town (and perhaps Nevada) is Whitney Peak Hotel . It has a bouldering park on-site and is home to one of the world’s tallest climbing walls where teens can climb up for a bird’s-eye view of the Reno Arch.

More info: VisitRenoTahoe.com

San Diego, California

Here’s why: Whether or not you agree with its nickname “America’s Finest City,” you’ll agree San Diego has beautiful year-round weather and so much to keep your teen(s) happy they’ll ask about going to college there.

Do this: Beach hop your way around the city’s nearly three area beaches, or cave hop via kayak or SUP . Take a self-guided street art tour , stopping to pose in front of massive murals — often illustrating important messages — for pics for the ‘gram. Other must-consider attractions include the San Diego Zoo , San Diego Air & Space Museum , San Diego Automotive Museum and the Comic-Con Museum .

Stay here: The Sun Outdoors San Diego Bay welcomes RVs in addition to its fully-furnished tiny home rentals complete with fire pits and front porches. Between the on-site arcade, food trucks, poolside movie screen, basketball courts and indoor/outdoor fitness center, teens will never find themselves bored on vacation.

Seattle, Washington

Here’s why: The city that birthed the grunge music movement is an artsy, alternative place most teens will feel so welcome in they’ll want to move there.

Do this: Seattle’s vacation ideas are vast and plentiful! For starters, take the popular Underground Tour to see what’s beneath the city via its vast network of interconnecting tunnels. Next, visit the Museum of Pop Culture , home to exhibits like Contact High: A Visual History of Hip-Hop, the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame and Indie Game Revolution. Teens developing a taste for coffee will also want see the many coffee shops in the city that birthed Starbucks and a growing trend toward artisanal brews. Don’t forget to catch the famous flying fish show at Pike Place Market — home to several pop-up murals that would look great on the ‘gram. Finally, adventure seekers can get their fix at the indoor ninja course at Elevated Sportz in nearby Bothell or on the miles of trails in the surrounding evergreen forests. There are also plenty of water sports to try in Puget Sound.

Stay here: Thompson Seattle is a luxury waterfront property within walking distance of Seattle’s top attractions including everything from Pike Place Market to hip vintage shops. Parents will appreciate the floor-to-ceiling views of Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountain Range while the kids are looking at their devices.

Space Coast, Florida

Here’s why: Just an hour from Orlando , Florida’s Space Coast is an inspirational beach destination where teens can learn about everything from space exploration to manatee conservation.

Do this: Get a trip to Disney World , Universal Studios and Epcot out of the way. Then head southeast to the childhood home of Kelly Slater (it’s the East Coast's Surf Capital) for some beach time. Explore further inland on a kayak or SUP tour winding through tunnels of mangrove trees. Sea turtle sightings aren’t guaranteed, but the Space Coast does have a huge concentration of them. Teens obsessed with LED lights will be in awe in the bioluminescent lagoon . The Space Coast is one of very few places in the world to see this phenomenon where the tiniest of marine creatures emit a neon blue light for protection. Teens who want to work for NASA will never want to leave the Kennedy Space Center with its rocket garden, 3D space films, shuttle launch experience and journey to Mars. For a really memorable experience, book some add-on "enhancements" that includes immersive training courses and even a casual chat with an astronaut.

Stay here: The family-owned and operated Surf Studio Beach Resort in Cocoa Beach has clean, low-cost accommodations that include kitchens (because teens are always hungry) and a private bedroom for the parents. Cape Winds Resort Rentals in Cape Canaveral also offers private beach access in addition to tennis courts, a basketball court and a pool.

More info: VisitSpaceCoast.com

Tenerife, Spain

Here’s why: A trip to Tenerife is a rite of passage for most European teens. American teens will love the Island of Eternal Spring and its lively beaches, ethereal national parks and top-rated zoo and waterpark for the same reasons.

Do this: Ride the cable car up to the top of Teide, the world’s third-tallest volcano and crown jewel of Europe’s most visited national park . Snorkel while on a SUP or kayak tour in the shade of the cliffs at Los Gigantes, home to dolphins and sea life galore. Ride the zero gravity slide at Siam Park , the no. 1 rated waterpark in the world according to TripAdvisor, or head out on a quad safari en route to Spain’s highest village. Of course, there are also miles of beaches to explore (made of white sand imported from the Sahara or local, black volcanic sand).

Stay here: Families with older teens will enjoy the adults-only (16+) atmosphere at Iberostar Selecion Sabila , where luxurious, minimalist design meets beachfront all-inclusivity. Families with younger teens with small siblings can stay up the road at Iberostar Selecion Anthelia which boasts six pools and a kids’ camp.

Whistler, Canada

Here’s why: Billing itself as an international mountain sports mecca, Whistler is another family vacation bucket list destination. It gives teens unlimited opportunities for adventure and — just as important — a greater appreciation for nature.

Do this: Drop into a teen group ski or snowboard lesson at Whistler Blackcomb , a venue for the 2010 Olympic Games. Those not wanting to try snow sports can hang out at the teen youth center: three rooms of video games, movies, skateboarding and special events. In the summer, junior golfers (16 and under) golf free with an adult on Whistler’s award-winning golf courses. Older teens qualify for a highly discounted green fee. Teens can also sign up for Summer Gravity mountain biking camps where they’ll learn from the pros and meet other teens obsessed with MTB.

Stay here: The best option for families wanting to stay at base camp is Fairmont Chateau Whistler . Guests ages 16+ are allowed on daily excursions sans parents (just signed permission slips). They include paddle boarding, hiking, biking and frisbee golf.

"I stayed at the Kalahari in Wisconsin Dells a few years ago and had a ridiculously good time. There’s something for literally everyone — an indoor waterpark, arcade, amusement park, bowling alley, spa, golf simulator... I could go on. Such a great destination if you’re in the Midwest and looking for a fun family vacation!" — Audrey Ekman, a production associate at Shop TODAY

Here’s why: Wisconsin Dells is the waterpark capital of the world. Families can stay for two weeks and still never ride all the slides.

Do this: Visit the bottom of the ocean (or outer space) thanks to the underwater virtual reality experience at Kalahari , one of the country’s largest indoor waterparks. Race each other on the Raja king cobra-themed, side-by-side slides at Noah’s Ark . (It’s six stories high!) Visit Mt. Olympus to take on the nine-foot-tall waves at Poseidon’s Rage, one of the world’s largest wave pools or float on The River Troy, the world’s fastest manmade river. Tired of water-based activities? Attempt the Wizard Quest, the first fantasy team-building (or family-bonding) game in the country or unleash your inner Viking at Asgard Axe Throwing .

Stay here: While several area resorts boast their own waterparks, the top-rated property on TripAdvisor is the family-owned and -operated Black Hawk Motel & Suites . All guests get free admission to Timbavati Wildlife Park and a Wild Fun Zone attraction pass.

10 Most Affordable Tropical Destinations to Visit Around the World, According to Travel Experts

Warm, sunny places that won’t drain your entire vacation budget.

Lindsay Cohn is a writer, editor, and avid traveler who has visited 45 countries across six continents — and counting. She contributes to Travel + Leisure, Hotels Above Par, InsideHook, Well+Good, The Zoe Report, and more.

affordable travel vacations

Adrian Rudd/Travel + Leisure

Nothing says vacation quite like jetting off to a tropical destination with sunshine and beautiful beaches or rain forests and perhaps some dramatic mountains. Travelers can post up on the sand and enjoy midday naps under the shade of a palm tree, or take in the melodic soundtrack of jungle creatures. Of course, it's not all lazy days and nights, unless that's your preference.

Many torrid travel spots are ripe with adventure, from snorkeling excursions to ATV tours to zip lining. Culture and fresh, local cuisine also come with the territory. And while equatorial hot spots like St. Barts, the Maldives, and Bora Bora command a high price, it’s certainly not necessary to break the bank on a steamy escape. Prefer to save than splurge? You’re in good company. According to a recent Vacasa survey, 84 percent of travelers are shifting their plans to be more budget-conscious.

Lush landscapes, reasonable rates, and frame-worthy photo ops lie ahead at these affordable tropical destinations, from Costa Rica to Vietnam.

Mérida, Mexico

Itzel Garrido/Travel + Leisure

Mérida , the capital of Mexico's Yucatan state, is one of the country's most underrated cultural hubs. “Surge tourism-related pricing hasn't arrived yet, as it’s often overlooked by travelers in favor of beachside resort meccas such as Cancun and Tulum ,” says Brandon Berkson, CEO of Hotels Above Par . Days unfold while ambling about the historic downtown, stocking up on affordable souvenirs at design-forward shops, and savoring regional dishes such as cochinita pibil at economical Yucatec restaurants. “If you’re looking for a boutique hotel in Merida that doesn't break the bank, Wayam Mundo Imperial is the move, with suites ringing in at under $175 a night.”

Ubud, Bali, Indonesia

Daniel Gorostieta/Travel + Leisure

Bali might require a long travel day and some pricier plane tickets, but the Island of the Gods offers travelers superb value. The budget-conscious crowd should consider the upland town of Ubud in particular, a bastion of traditional culture and lush scenery with more wallet-friendly rates than along the coast. You can spend the day palling around with cute primates at the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary for just $5. The surrounding landscape brims with rain forests and terraced rice paddies. Food from local warungs and accommodations are inexpensive as well. If you want to splurge, the top-rated Adiwana Unagi Suites is still around $150 a night.

Negril, Jamaica

Molly Aaker/Getty Images

The westernmost town in Jamaica, Negril — a.k.a. the Capital of Casual — offers sandy beaches, turquoise water, friendly locals, and a laid-back vibe. This relaxing paradise also won’t put stress on your wallet. Seven Mile Beach is dotted with affordable and delicious local beach shacks. “There are several great boutique properties — notably Skylark Negril Beach Resort , a member of Design Hotels — with rates under $200,” says Chelsea Bicknese, a travel advisor at Fora . “Rick's Cafe does a bar special that’s five Red Stripes and five shots for $25. Split between friends, it’s only a few bucks each.”

Phú Quốc, Vietnam

Qui Thinh Tran/Getty Images

Admittedly, getting to Phú Quốc, a Vietnamese island off the coast of Cambodia, does require connecting flights and higher airfare costs than most places on this list, but don’t let that be a deterrent. Once you arrive at this slice of paradise, it’s an incredible value. Rooms at the top-rated Mövenpick Villas & Residences Phú Quốc start at just $75. The night markets in Dương Đông overflow with cheap and delicious eats. And, of course, catching rays on the white-sand beaches and hiking through Phú Quốc National Park are free.

Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica

Adrian Rudd/Travel + Leisure

While the beach resorts in Santa Teresa and Peninsula Papagayo may fetch high price tags, that’s certainly not the case across all of Costa Rica. Off-the-beaten-path Manuel Antonio — the area including and surrounding seven-square-mile Manuel Antonio National Park — is a bastion of biodiversity with rain forests, pristine white-sand beaches , coral reefs for snorkeling, and diverse wildlife, including three-toed sloths and white-faced capuchin monkeys. Its remote location keeps the prices down. Many of the hotels cost around $100 a night, and eco-tours are fairy reasonable as well.

Madeira, Portugal

Marco Bottigelli/Getty Images

Madeira is an adventure lover's paradise with cinematic scenery and eco-tourism opportunities galore. Its lush forests, black-sand beaches, natural lava pools, and towering mountains with idyllic viewpoints like Lombo dos Palheiros are just a few of the scenic highlights. “In downtown Funchal, many star attractions, including Mercado dos Lavradores and Livraria Esperanca, are free,” says Berkson. Entry to the flower-studded Monte Palace Tropical Garden costs about $13.50. “Right across from the sea and within walking distance of everything, Next hotel is a wallet-friendly stay with rates around $150 a night.”

San Juan, Puerto Rico

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

“For travelers looking for an easy and affordable beach vacation, Puerto Rico supplies some of the most reasonable direct flights from the United States — with tickets starting at $129,” says Laura Lindsay, travel trends expert at Skyscanner . Besides low-cost outdoor activities like stretching out on the sun-splashed shores and trekking through tropical rain forests a short drive away, head to the historic district of Old San Juan to experience local culture. It’s free to wander around and snap photos of the colorful buildings. Admission to Castillo San Felipe del Morro, the imposing 16th-century fortress and citadel, is just $10 for adults and free for kids under age 15.

Puebla, Mexico

Kryssia Campos/Getty Images

“Featuring a subtropical highland climate, the central Mexican city of Puebla remains one of Mexico’s best-kept secrets,” says Berkson. The city is teeming with affordable activities — from checking out the art galleries, colorful facades, and handicrafts along Callejón de Los Sapos and admiring the well-tailored architecture of the historic library Biblioteca Palafoxiana, Catedral de Puebla, and the ornate 17th-century Capilla del Rosario to stocking up on handmade pottery and feasting on delicious local dishes. “You can often book my favorite stay, Banyan Tree Puebla , for under $200 a night.”

Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic

pawel.gaul/Getty Images

Droves of sunseekers flock to the all-inclusive resorts in Punta Cana . Far fewer realize the deals that await in Santo Domingo. Round-trip flights as low as $286 leave plenty of vacation budget for lodging, food, and entertainment — not that any of those things will set you back much in the commercial and cultural capital of the Dominican Republic. After lounging on the sandy beaches, take a tram tour of Jardin Botánico Nacional, eat your way through Mercado Modelo for cheap, and visit the famous Basilica Cathedral of Santa Maria la Menor. And be sure to do a day trip to Parque Nacional Los Tres Ojos.

LucBrousseau/Getty Images

In comparison to nearby St. Martin or even Anguilla , St. Kitts flies under the radar. However, it’s deserving of your vacation days and hard-earned dollars — both of which will go far on the 18-mile-long island that’s known for its Atlantic and Caribbean beaches, lush rain forests, and candy-colored buildings in the capital, Basseterre. In November, JetBlue launched nonstop flights from New York (JFK) to St. Kitts (SKB) with one-way tickets starting at $183. But it's not just getting there that’s easy on the wallet; you can snag a room at St. Kitts Marriott Resort & The Royal Beach Casino for just $218.

Concert tourism, or “gig tripping,” is on the rise, mostly fueled by Taylor Swift’s record-breaking Eras Tour. With more mega tours scheduled for summer 2024, this travel trend seems to be here to stay as fans turn these concerts into mini-vacations, traveling across cities and states to catch their favorite artists live. While the gig trip phenomenon is undoubtedly exhilarating, it also comes with a hefty price tag.

As we approach peak travel season, we wanted to shed more light on the actual costs of a weekend concert vacation in 50 of America’s largest cities, examining everything from concert ticket prices to flight and accommodation expenses. Whether you’re a seasoned concert-goer or planning your first musical jet set, understanding these costs can help you better budget for those unforgettable live music experiences.

Additionally, we took a look at the tour dates for 30 of the most popular 2023/2024 tours, from Taylor Swift to Drake to Olivia Rodrigo, to see which U.S. cities get the most and least concerts from major artists.

U.S. map highlighting the most and least wallet-friendly cities for concert travel

When planning travel around a tour stop, the costs can hit as many high notes as your favorite singer, especially when considering the steep costs of flights, Airbnbs, Ubering, tour merchandise, and booze at the concert venue.

The 5 most expensive U.S. cities for a weekend concert vacation are:

  • New York, New York –- $1,793
  • San Francisco, California — $1,692
  • Los Angeles, California –- $1,516
  • Boston, Massachusetts –- $1,454
  • Seattle, Washington — $1,407

It’s no surprise that New York City is the least wallet-friendly tour stop for concert travel, costing $1,793 for a 2-night concert trip for 1 tourist . In New York, the average concert ticket price at Madison Square Garden is a whopping $231.06. Flying into John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) ? Prepare to shell out an average of $441.34 round-trip. Additionally, an Airbnb for 2 nights averages $430.70, while ride-share and meal costs in NYC total $114.23 and $198.00, respectively.

San Francisco isn’t far behind at $1,692 . Concert tickets here rack up to $244.33 on average, while flights into San Francisco International Airport (SFO) average $465.68, and a 2-night Airbnb stay averages $388.06. Even the booze carries a heavy price tag, with 2 16-ounce domestic beers at a concert setting you back nearly $40 ($38.02). Factor in ride-share, meals, and a $43 tour t-shirt, and you’re looking at a pricey getaway.

Los Angeles, Boston, and Seattle round out the top 5 most expensive cities for concert travel. A weekend concert trip costs over $1,400 in each of these cities.

While some cities may be expensive for the gig tripper, others offer the chance to enjoy the music without the financial hangover.

The 5 least expensive U.S. cities for a weekend concert vacation are:

  • Lexington, Kentucky — $1,037
  • Cleveland, Ohio –- $1,073
  • Cincinnati, Ohio –- $1,097
  • Memphis, Tennessee — $1,123
  • Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania –- $1,128

Lexington tops the list as the most wallet-friendly concert destination , where a full weekend of live tunes comes in at just over $1,000 . Cheaper flights ($247.34 round-trip), reasonable Airbnb rates (2 nights for $260.45), and lower food and beverage prices both in and out of concert venues make Lexington perfect for the concert junkie on a budget.

Not far behind are Cleveland and Cincinnati , with costs hovering around $1,073 and $1,097, respectively . Cleveland concert-goers benefit from low beer prices at venues, where 2 16-ounce beers cost just $11.74 — compare this to the $39.74 charged in Seattle. In Cincinnati, the average concert ticket price is just $132.90, ranking ninth lowest in the study.

Memphis and Pittsburgh also make the list of the 5 cheapest concert destinations. Offering rich musical heritages without plundering your savings, these cities sneak in under $1,130 for the entire weekend. In Memphis, the average concert ticket price is just $132.90 at FedExForum –– the fourth lowest in the study, while Pittsburgh earns its spot on the list with its affordable Airbnb rates, at just $214.53 for a 2-night stay.

With “gig trips,” the concert ticket cost is just the tip of the iceberg. Once you tally up flights, accommodations, transportation, and meals, the total cost of your trip can skyrocket. We’ve compiled our full data study for all 50 U.S. cities analyzed into the interactive table below. Search for your concert destination of interest and click on the heading of each column to sort by specific cost categories.

When we zero in on concert ticket prices specifically, prices are highest in Austin, Texas, and Las Vegas, Nevada . In these hotspots, the average concert ticket at the top-grossing venues hits a whopping $279.03 in Austin and $260.52 in Vegas. Whether it’s the eclectic music vibe of Austin or the glitzy shows of Vegas, these cities are setting the bar — and the price — sky high for live tunes.

The cost of concert-going can quickly add up — from tickets to flights to accommodations. However, savvy travelers can mitigate some of these expenses by choosing the right credit card that offers cash-back on concert tickets, flights, and hotel stays. For a deeper dive into how you can optimize your spending and enjoy some serious perks along the way, check out our guide to the best credit cards for concert tickets .

Graphic highlighting the most and least expensive U.S. cities for concert parking

Planning to park at premier concert venues such as Red Rocks Amphitheater near Denver or The Sphere in Las Vegas? Be prepared to pay a premium. Parking pass prices at these locations and others can be steep, especially for shows of top artists. In certain scenarios, the price of a parking pass may even exceed $50.

If you plan to see a concert in San Francisco , brace yourself — parking alone will cost you an average of $89.11 , making it the priciest city for concert parking. Not too far behind, Los Angeles averages $79.50 per parking pass. Rounding out the top 5 most expensive cities for concert parking are Austin, Boston, and Miami, where parking passes average $56 to $66. Concertgoers in these metros might want to consider ride-share or public transit when seeing Justin Timberlake or Blink 182 on tour this summer.

Some cities seem to have all the luck when it comes to hosting the hottest names in music. By analyzing tour dates for 30 of the most popular 2023/2024 tours, we’ve uncovered which cities are concert capitals and which ones are left wanting more.

Not surprisingly, cities like New York City (89 shows) and Los Angeles (70 shows) top the list, serving as frequent stops for major tours thanks to their larger-than-life venues and massive fan bases.

Despite its relatively modest population of just 499,127, Atlanta, Georgia, punches way above its weight on the concert circuit, ranking fourth with a whopping 39 shows . Tampa, Florida, too, defies expectations with its smaller crowd of 398,173 residents, yet it boasts an impressive lineup of 20 major concerts . These cities are proof that size isn’t everything when it comes to live music — it’s all about the vibe and the fans.

On the flip side, Jacksonville, Florida , isn’t feeling the concert love. Despite having a substantial population of 971,319, it only received 1 tour stop. Similarly, Memphis , Tennessee, known for its rich musical heritage and a sizeable population of 621,056, surprisingly is host to just 4 shows.

In this study, we calculated the total of 8 cost factors in 50 of the largest U.S. cities to find the cost of a weekend concert trip for 1 tourist across the U.S., where a weekend equals a 2-night stay, flying in on a Friday night and flying out on a Sunday morning.

The cost factors are as follows:

The concert ticket and parking pass prices in this study represent an average resale cost across 2024 concerts at each city’s top-grossing venue, sourced from Vivid Seats. Please note that actual prices will vary depending on the artist. Prices on resale platforms like Vivid Seats are determined by supply and demand dynamics, so factors like the popularity of the event, the availability of tickets, and the proximity to the event date can all influence prices.

Lastly, we looked at the city tour dates across 30 of the most popular 2023/2024 tours to see which cities get the most and least concerts from major musical acts. The 30 tours we analyzed were Alanis Morrisette, Bad Bunny, Beyoncé, Billy Joel, Blake Shelton, Blink 182, Drake, Eagles, Enrique Iglesias, Foo Fighters, Green Day, Hozier, Janet Jackson, Justin Timberlake, Kacey Musgraves, Kid Cudi, Madonna, Maggie Rogers, Melanie Martinez, Mitski, Nicki Minaj, Noah Kahan, Olivia Rodrigo, P!nk, Pearl Jam, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Taylor Swift, The Rolling Stones, Usher, Zach Bryan.

As concert tourism and other pop culture travel trends gain momentum (both in the U.S. and internationally ), our study uncovers the stark reality behind the excitement: the significant costs. In all 50 cities examined, you won’t find a weekend concert getaway for less than a grand.

Every destination offers a different financial tune for gig trippers. Concert-goers can save over $750 by seeing their favorite artists in Lexington, Kentucky, instead of New York City. Whether you’re a concert veteran or a newbie to the live music scene, understanding these expenses is crucial for planning your next concert vacation.

11 top affordable all-inclusive resorts for 2024.

A stress-free getaway awaits at these affordable all-in-one properties.

Top Affordable All-Inclusive Resorts

All-inclusive resorts promise a simplified vacation: One upfront fee covers food, drinks and select activities, so you can relax with a cocktail in hand instead of worrying about your spending. However, not every all-inclusive accommodation option offers the same budget-conscious bang for your buck; some end up costing much more than you may be hoping to pay thanks to extra fees for amenities like kids clubs or meals at specialty restaurants.

These U.S. News picks for affordable resorts are properties where two guests can stay in one room for around $250 per night or less. These prices may not be available year-round: You may need to settle for off-peak travel periods or reserve well in advance for peak seasons (usually December to April for warm destinations). Round-trip flights are not factored into these prices, but some resorts may offer packages that include air travel.

Whether you're dreaming of a family-friendly beach trip or an adults-only escape, these reasonably priced all-inclusive resorts across the Caribbean, Mexico and Central America ensure a memorable travel experience that won't break the bank.

Previous guests have complimented the friendly staff at the resort, particularly the bartenders, as well as the gorgeous natural setting. The resort is best accessed via a roughly 15-mile drive from Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (also known as Liberia Airport), which offers direct connections to a number of major U.S. and Canadian cities.

El Cozumeleño Beach Resort: Cozumel, Mexico

Package deals: Romance packages are available, as are hotel and flight combination deals.

If you're hoping to head to the white sands of Cozumel , a popular island just off the coast of Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula, El Cozumeleño Beach Resort is one of the cheapest all-inclusive choices. Choose between rooms facing the garden or ocean (typically more expensive), all of which are fitted with balconies.

Rates include free diving lessons in the pool and snorkel equipment rentals, plus other activities like kayaking, tennis and dance classes. Otherwise, spend your days lounging by your choice of five pools (including one indoor option), two hot tubs and a private beach. Dining venues include the upscale Veranda restaurant, the casual Cocal eatery and an assortment of bars. Recent guests describe El Cozumeleño as a great place to relax, with particularly friendly staff. Per-night costs can dip as low as $130 per room and typically don't rise above $200 per night.

Paradise Village Nuevo Vallarta: Mexico

Starting rate: From $155 per night

Package deals: Travelers can choose between the all-inclusive plan, a breakfast buffet plan, a golf package or specials determined by the length of their stays. A "Kids Stay Free" deal for children ages 2 to 12 may also be available in combination with these packages. On top of that, guests can save time and money by booking their hotel rooms and air travel together.

For an affordable option within reach of Puerto Vallarta , consider Paradise Village Nuevo Vallarta, located just under 10 miles northwest of the center of the popular resort city. The hotel's all-inclusive plan encompasses unlimited food and beverages, gratuities, nonmotorized water sports, Wi-Fi access and more.

You'll enjoy access to two lagoon-style pools with slides, hot tubs and waterfalls – plus another lap pool for workouts and a kids area. Meanwhile, palapas and chairs are available at the beach, and guests will have a long list of sporty activities to choose from, including bocce and kayaking.

Restaurant options include Mexican fare, Italian dishes and sushi, plus the Copan Sunset Sky Bar for drinks with a view. Recent visitors say that Paradise Village is a good bet for family vacations, thanks to the plentiful activities at the property.

Hotel Riu Playa Blanca: Río Hato, Panama

Pools at Hotel Riu Playa Blanca.

Courtesy of Riu Hotels & Resorts

Package deals: Hotel Riu Playa Blanca lists a variety of "best offers" on its website for select dates throughout the year.

If you'd like to look beyond classic all-inclusive destinations like the Dominican Republic or Mexico, consider Hotel Riu Playa Blanca, located about 80 miles southwest of Panama City, Panama. This modern property, opened in 2014, features a red-and-white color scheme and a sleeker design than your average all-inclusive. Accommodations all come with free Wi-Fi access, a minibar, and a balcony or terrace.

This resort is a good place for a relaxed trip; you'll have access to three main pools (plus another for kids) and the shores of Playa Blanca along the Pacific. Daytime activities include volleyball and a kids club, while live music and dance venues rule the night. In addition to activities and entertainment, the all-inclusive fares cover all meals, snacks and beverages. Dining options include a buffet, an Asian restaurant and a steakhouse, among other options. Past visitors note that the resort is ultra-clean and boasts friendly staff.

Fiesta Resort All Inclusive Central Pacific: Puntarenas, Costa Rica

Package deals: Fiesta Resort offers discounts throughout the year based on the length of your stay.

This all-inclusive resort sits about 55 miles west of Costa Rica's capital city, San Jose, and has the unusual feature of a volcanic black sand beach at its doorstep. Whether you're lounging there or near one of multiple pools, the resort's lush gardens give the feel of a tropical paradise. Activities include hits like water polo and beach volleyball, as well as some more unique options like a coffee class and palm weaving.

The property offers four main restaurants and seven bars, including poolside options. Given Costa Rica's prominence as an ecotourism destination, you may also want to visit the pristine rainforests or tropical islands in the area (however, such excursions aren't included in the hotel rates). Previous guests love the proximity to nature and the option to go on wildlife tours, though some travelers feel the resort caters more to locals.

Note: The property will be renovating its 408 guest rooms in different stages between 2023 and 2027.

Frequently Asked Questions

There's no one agency or website that offers the best deals for every all-inclusive resort. Instead, a solid approach is to use a website like Kayak or Expedia to search for resorts that have cheaper pricing available at the time you want to travel. Then, once you have the names of a few affordable options, you can shop around different agencies or websites to see which one offers the cheapest deal.

If you're on the hunt for an all-inclusive deal, it's important to think about your timing – both in terms of when you're booking and when you want to travel. Better deals tend to involve traveling when there's less demand. According to Laura Sangster, founder of luxury travel agency Caribbean Journey , there's typically less demand for all-inclusive properties in the Caribbean, Mexico and Central America during September and October, which are typically part of hurricane season .

"This is when hotels, including all-inclusive resorts, experience the lowest occupancy and thus offer the best deals in an effort to fill rooms. Historically, these have been very active hurricane months. Hurricane season runs from June 1 to Nov. 30, so rates within this period are always less than December to May."

While Sangster notes that it's possible to find last-minute resort deals for travel during these more popular months, she doesn't recommend holding out for such bargains.

"While you might benefit from a decreased hotel rate, airfares currently price the other way and will only be more expensive closer to travel," she says. "It's also important to plan ahead to ensure you are able to secure the room category you want."

Sangster advises travelers to book well in advance to get better prices, particularly if you're hoping to travel during peak season. "We saw very few deals during the 2021 and 2022 peak seasons. All-inclusive resorts seemed to follow a trend of increasing as the weeks and months ticked by," she says. "Our clients who didn't book the initial proposal we prepared often faced higher rates when they came back to book weeks or months later."

Read: The Trick to Finding Cheap Flights

Unfortunately, there isn't one easy answer to this question. It's generally possible to find cruise fares at a cheaper price than all-inclusive vacations, but cruises are known for having more hidden costs that can rack up during your trip. For example, not all cruise fares include alcoholic drinks; you may need to purchase a daily beverage package , which can quickly add to the bill. You may also have to pay more to access some restaurants on board or for excursions when the ship docks.

In contrast, all-inclusive resort rates usually include drinks (alcoholic and nonalcoholic) and meals at all restaurants on the property. It's still possible to incur additional charges for services like spa treatments or some activities like a scuba diving trip, but such fees tend to be for much more obvious extras.

The best way to know whether a cruise or all-inclusive resort is right for you is to do your research before booking. Look at what a cruise fare does and doesn't include, and try to figure out how much you'll need to pay in extra fees to have the vacation you want. You can also check out our breakdown of how much a cruise costs and even browse all-inclusive cruise options to see if they're right for you.
