Excellent beer, great people, and the legend that is Fuggle the cat. What more do you need?
Stumbled across this gem after a nice hike with my girlfriends. Obviously things are different with COVID but we just happened to have a BEAUTIFUL day and this brewery had outdoor seating! They do not sell food so the beers were sold to go, but there were tables and chairs in the sunshine, spaced 6 feet apart, so we bought a few beers and took a seat! I believe they also had curbside pickup for beer as well as I heard the gentleman taking an order as we walked up to order. Great beer, nice spot & support local!
Beers and sunshine! Ignore the background lol
This brewery is unique! Nothing fancy, but great IPAs. It's seemed to be a one man band, but the owner definitely had it in control. Definitely worth checking out!
Chris and his cat Fuggle are the two sole proprietors of Wandering Star Brewery. Together they brew, taste, serve, and host all beers and thirsty patrons coming to sample. Five dollar flights are unbeatable - and each brew is packed with layered, bright flavor. Delicious beers, great service, awesome conversation, and an amazing live-in mascot with Fuggle make this working brew warehouse a comfortable lounge to sample with friends.
This place is just straight up FUN. Honestly, a great time, great beer, and great people. The brewery cat, Fuggle is the cutest little host and owner Chris is a blast. We came not knowing what we were getting into, but wanted somewhere with a pool table or something to do while we drank. They have pool, ping pong, jenga, and a slew of board games. Will be back again, we all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Can't wait to go back! - Serene, Eliza, & Travis
I dropped in here while on a business trip in the area. Happened to find it when searching for a local brewery, and I'm really glad I did! The beer was excellent all around (ipas, porter, everything really). The owner, Chris, was incredibly nice and the locals there were too. Definitely a place to come back to if/when I'm back here!
There are few times when your expectation is a reality. Luckily, our stop at wandering star brewery was just that. Serving as a pit stop during our drive back from my cousins wedding, we enjoyed the lovely backyard atmosphere. We truly felt like we were pulling up to a friends house to catch up and have a beer on our way through. There is a lovely garden in the back were we catch sights of monarch butterflies while we played Jenga. Lots of seating, perfect for an afternoon with friends. Very small scale, this intimate brewery is clearly beloved by the neighbors. You can hear calls of dinner plans between draft pours. And The beer is really, really good. My favorite was the bartender, a calico named fuggel. Described jokingly to us as "the only part of he business plan that actually worked out". Regardless of the original plan, we loved how it turned out and will Sure to be back.
Awesome garage brewery! Beer is great! The staff and cat are so friendly and nice. My husband and I stopped here for a quick beer on our way back to Boston after a wedding in the Berkshires. It was supposed to be a quick stop, but we enjoyed the place and beer so much that we stayed for over two hours drinking beer and playing board games. Happy to report I am still the queen of checkers. I NEVER lose! :) If you are looking for great beer and an off the beaten path kind place, this is your brewery!
Wandering Star is an eclectic brewery with sort of a mish mash of decorations. The beer I would consider below average compared to most breweries but the employee working was friendly enough and happy to help. They even have a house cat that wanders throughout the brewery which is pretty neat (unless you have allergies). When I visited it took them a while to get the taps to work and the beer was not impressive.
100% good vibes, beer was great, played a few rounds of jenga, pool, darts, ping pong... had an awesome conversation with Chris the brewer... gooooood spot!

Thoughtful Design
We design original products that we love to use ourselves. We continuously strive to make our products more beautiful, more functional, and more affordable than market alternatives. Our original products are sold through a handful of brands created by Wandering Star.
Local Sourcing
We are located in Gainesville, Virginia. For everything that we sell, we strive to find sources of materials and manufacturing that are located as close to our US customer base as possible. This reduces the carbon footprint associated with shipping, and also encourages employment in our local communities.
Sustainability
Wandering Star is committed to using sustainable raw materials that minimize the impact on our environment. We favor sustainable wood, recycled raw materials, and recycled/green packaging materials. For all of our products we try to minimize or eliminate chemical usage and treatments.
We named our company “Wandering Star” because we love travel, outdoor living, nature, and experiencing diverse cultures in exotic locations. We think our products reflect this ethos. But what is a Wandering Star?
Looking at the night sky the ancient Greeks found two primary kinds of celestial objects; the fixed stars and the wandering stars. Think of the night’s sky. Most of the visible objects appear to move at exactly the same speed and present themselves in exactly the same arrangement night after night. These are the fixed stars. They appear to move all together. Aside from these were a set of nine objects that behaved differently, the moon, the sun and the planets Mercury, Venus, Mars, Saturn and Jupiter each moved according to a different system. For the Greeks these were the wandering stars. Our word “planet” comes from the Greek word planetes, meaning “wanderer.”
We hope that you will choose to wander with us!

PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh Police found a child wandering alone outside early Thursday morning.
The department received a 911 call at about 4 a.m. for a little girl, approximately 3 years old, spotted walking alone outside in Duquesne Heights. Officers searched the area and a sergeant found the child at around 4:50 a.m. in the 100 block of Oneida Street.
The toddler was wearing a T-shirt and it is unknown how long she was exposed to the elements.
Pittsburgh EMS responded to the scene to evaluate the child for cold exposure and vomiting. The temperature in Pittsburgh was in the low 20s at the time the girl was found.
She was taken to a local hospital with hypothermia in serious but stable condition. The girl was alert and speaking later at the hospital.
UPDATE: The child's mother has been located and is with her daughter at the hospital. The child was in the care of a young babysitter at the time this occurred. The investigation shows she somehow opened the door and slipped out of the house in the middle of the night. https://t.co/9xn4g1PqN6 — Pittsburgh Public Safety (@PghPublicSafety) February 29, 2024
Police have since said the child was in the care of a young babysitter when she somehow got outside overnight. When her mother came to pick her up in the morning, the child was missing and 911 was called.
No charges are anticipated at this time, according to Pittsburgh Public Safety.

WANDERING STAR BREWERY
Wandering Star Brewery is pretty much the definition of “off the beaten path.” Located in a garage in Pittsfield, this 10-beer craft brewery was started by three friends who met through the New York City craft brew scene. They opened up shop in 2011 and have since developed a broad distribution base at bars throughout Massachusetts and New York, but there’s nothing like getting beer fresh from the source. Stop by most Saturdays from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. to sample their brews, take a tour, and fill up a growler. Do call first to be sure, and note that this is not a brew pub. They change many of their beers seasonally, but year-round favorites include Second Breakfast (a session IPA) and Catnip (a white IPA).

The 11 Best Places to Go Stargazing in Pittsburgh
Located where three rivers converge (the Ohio River, the Monongahela River, and the Allegheny River), Pittsburgh has deep historical roots as a good city for business and innovation. During the Gilded Age, industrialists like Andrew Carnegie established companies that helped Pittsburgh grow; today, many major tech companies have their offices in Pittsburgh.
All that growth and industry has been good for Pittsburgh’s economy over the years. It has also produced some serious light pollution as the city population has swelled (and shrunk at times). This might make it seem like stargazing in Pittsburgh is impossible… actually, it’s not!
There are a few stargazing spots in Pittsburgh, and some even better ones a bit outside the city. If you or someone in your family wants to see the night sky, here are the best places for stargazing in Pittsburgh and beyond
In this post, I promote traveling to a destination that is the traditional lands of the 𐓏𐒰𐓓𐒰𐓓𐒷 𐒼𐓂𐓊𐒻 𐓆𐒻𐒿𐒷 𐓀𐒰^𐓓𐒰^(Osage), Shawandasse Tula (Shawanwaki/Shawnee), Monongahela Culture peoples, among many others. The Best Spots for Stargazing in Pittsburgh
Like most cities, Pittsburgh has limited stargazing options – but they do exist. Astronomy groups and amateur astronomers often hold events in some of these locations. This means even those who can’t travel outside the city can learn more about the night sky.
Explore the map above to see stargazing spots in Pittsburgh and a few further from the city lights. Then, read on to learn about the dark sky conditions, events, and other details you need to know to go stargazing each place.
Allegheny Observatory at Riverview Park
What better place to view the stars than from an institute dedicated to them? The University of Pittsburgh operates Allegheny Observatory; it’s an astronomical research institution that is located at the Riverview Park.
From April till the end of October, members of the public are welcome to take a tour of the observatory and to look at the stars through its 13” telescope. Entry is free, but you will need to register beforehand to be allowed to join the tour.
159 Riverview Ave, Pittsburgh, pitt.edu
Carnegie Science Center
Four Carnegie museums exist in Pittsburgh, and the Carnegie Science Center with its Henry Buhl, Jr. Planetarium & Observatory is the best one to go to for a superb stargazing experience. The planetarium offers visitors a virtual tour of the stars even on cloudy days.
If the weather permits, guests can go to the top of the center for an actual view of the skies. Skywatch sessions happen on selected days of the week between 8:00pm and 10:00pm. The entry cost is $4 for non-members and $2 for members.
1 Allegheny Ave, Pittsburgh, carnegiesciencecenter.org
Observatory Hill (Perry North)
The neighborhood of Perry North is physically the highest point of elevation in Pittsburgh. This gives its locals and visitors the best possible view of the night sky. It is small and isolated enough from the rest of the town that there are fewer buildings to get in the way of seeing the sky clearly.
Stargazing Spots Within One Hour of Pittsburgh
As you probably know, stargazing in a city offers a very limited view of the sky – even under the best conditions. Instead, opt for a short drive (between 30-60 minutes) to one of these stargazing spots near Pittsburgh. You’ll be delighted at how many more stars you can see.
Mingo Creek Park Observatory
Located on Shelter 10 Road, the Mingo Creek Park Observatory was built in 2004 by the Amateur Astronomers Association of Pittsburgh.
It is mostly accessible to its 300+ members, but during the summer, the public may attend one of the Observatory’s Star Parties. These are usually held every two weeks between April and October. At a star party, you get the opportunity to look at the heavenly bodies through the observatories’ telescopes, and also get an introduction to the stars and constellations.
1 Shelter 10 Road, Finleyville, 3ap.org
Wagman Observatory
The Nicholas E. Wagman Observatory is just 30 minutes outside Pittsburgh. It is also owned and operated by the Amateur Astronomers Association of Pittsburgh.
Expanded eight years after it was built, this amateur observatory was the first of its kind to dedicate itself to educating the public about the science of astronomy and providing them with the opportunity to enjoy it. Like the observatory at Mingo Creek Park, Wagman Observatory hosts star parties to give the public a chance to look through its giant telescopes and out to the heavens.
225 Kurn Rd, Tarentum, 3ap.org
Raccoon Creek State Park
Raccoon Creek offers clear access to the beautiful night sky and is an excellent spot from which to examine the heavens. If you come by the Park early enough, you can engage in a number of fun activities like horse riding, swimming, and fishing before settling down in the evening to stargaze.
The park closes at 9:00pm but you can camp out at any of the approved campsites around it. These are the spots to set up for a whole night of stargazing!
3000 PA-18, Hookstown, dcnr.pa.gov
Moraine State Park
Moraine State Park sits about 45 minutes away from Pittsburg, near the intersection of I–79 and I–80 in northwestern Pennsylvania .
This state-protected piece of nature welcomes those who love it and it is full of activities for new and returning visitors like hiking, golfing, driving tours, and birdwatching in its waterfowl observatory. You can also camp out on Moraine Lake and enjoy a crystal clear view of the wide blue yonder above.
225 Pleasant Valley Rd, Portersville, dcnr.state.pa.us
Heartwood Acres
Heartwood Acres Park is just 45 minutes from Pittsburgh. It is the most popular park in the Allegheny County parks system. The elegant mansion in the park was built in 1924, and along with the park formed the country residence of John and Mary Flinn Lawrence. The mansion was abandoned in 1974 and is now used to host events.
Bikers, runners, and picnickers enjoy Heartwood Acres during the day. Those who stay into the evening will get expansive sky views once the sun goes down.

Stargazing Spots Within Two Hours of Pittsburgh
If you really want to go stargazing and appreciate the night sky, you’ve gotta get away from the light pollution in Pittsburgh. Make an overnight or weekend trip of your next stargazing session. These great stargazing spots are all within a two-hour drive from Pittsburgh.
Laurel Hill State Park
The dark nights of Laurel Hill make it an excellent spot to stargaze, and the park offers multiple spots to do this from. For more active people ready to take on a hike, making it to the top of the hill to look at the stars is akin to climbing up the stairways of heaven to take a peek at the magnificence above.
For those who do not want to go up the hill, there are many campsites around Laurel Hill Lake that provide a good night sky view.
1454 Laurel Hill Park Rd, Somerset, dcnr.state.pa.us
Linn Run Park
Located just 90 minutes away from Pittsburg, Linn Run State Park is a small but picturesque piece of nature that welcomes visitors to 50,000 acres of unspoiled beauty. The park hosts a stream and a waterfall and is known for being relatively easy to hike.
Visitors who choose to set up night camp after enjoying a day of hiking will be treated to an awe-inspiring spread of stars and constellations.
Allegheny National Forest
Going to Allegheny National Forest from Pittsburgh may be a two-hour journey, but it is completely worth it. During the day, the forest is busy with people who engage in activities like hiking, cycling, fishing, hunting, and more.
At night, the stars open up beyond the trees to display the beauty of the great heaven. You can rent out a camp spot by the water so that you are undisturbed and enjoy looking at the constellations above.
Marienville, fs.usda.gov
Planetariums in Pittsburgh
Pittsburgh is home to only one planetarium – but it’s a great one! Buhl Planetarium at Carnegie Science Center hosts daily planetarium shows for visitors and locals who can’t make it to one of the stargazing spots mentioned above.
Recent and current shows include topics like Mars Madness , Beginners Guide to the Universe , and Stars Over Pittsburgh . Admission to Carnegie Science Center is $19.95 for adults and $11.95 for children and includes planetarium shows.
Best Time of Year to Go Stargazing in Pittsburgh
Though Pittsburgh is an inland city, it’s proximity to Lake Erie can produce some ‘lake-effect’ changes in the weather throughout the year. As in many cities, finding a good night to go stargazing is a balance between warm weather, humidity, precipitation, and cloud cover. Based on these factors, the best months for stargazing in Pittsburgh are September and October .
During September and October, you’ll experience clearer skies (fewer clouds, less precipitation, lower humidity) and not-too-chilly temperatures. If you want to mark your calendar, the early-October Draconids are a great time to plan a stargazing trip near Pittsburgh.
Can You See the Milky Way in Pittsburgh?
Pittsburgh is home to over 300,000 people. As we know – where people live, they light up the night and cause light pollution. This makes it impossible to see the Milky Way within Pittsburgh.
Within one hour, you can get to spots where the Milky Way is visible under the right conditions. Places like Mingo Creek Park Observatory and Racoon Creek State Park are all far enough from Pittsburgh to help you look for our galaxy in the southern sky. Even further, Laurel Hill State Park and Allegheny National Forest are even better spots to see the Milky Way .

The sun is going crazy thus year with solar flares. I live close to Mingo. How can I find out a few hours in advance if definite display of the northern lights being visible here. I know it has happened befote but it has been a number of years. I am thinking that given the strong solar activity they should show up this year. But, even if I have to head North of Pittsburgh, or even to Ohio, I need as close as a true prediction as possible as early as possible. Is there a site I can check or sign up for local pretty accurate forecasts as I csn’t be driving north every other night for nothing? Thank you. I am sure you understand where I an coming from. With upwards of 80 meteors per hour visibly illuminating the midnight sky, they are easily one of the most spectacular stargazing opportunities of the entire year. National Weather Service confirm 3 tornadoes in the region; researching another
The National Weather Service confirmed Saturday that an EF-0 tornado with winds of up to 70 mph struck the Harrison City area of Westmoreland County on Friday.
Teams were out Saturday in the daylight to gather data and evaluate the damage at four suspected tornado sites, said NWS meteorologist Lee Hendricks.
Three have been confirmed through various means and a fourth is suspected. Two were confirmed Friday based on photos and videos, the NWS said.
The NWS had reported the tornado in the Trafford area and in the Harrison City area of Penn Township shortly after 5 p.m Friday. based on Doppler radar readings, but had not been able to confirm whether that funnel cloud, later seen moving off to Delmont about 5:25 p.m., had touched down and caused any damage.
But on Saturday, an NWS survey team was able to confirm damage had occurred.
It was one of at least three tornadoes to hit the region in a short time Friday afternoon in Westmoreland, Allegheny and Washington counties.
In Penn Township, where wind sheared off treetops, downed branches and sent dumpster garbage swirling 100 feet skyward near the Municipal Complex, Emergency Management Coordinator Paul Wersing nevertheless was struck by the absence of serious damage.
Someone’s trampoline became airborne and was left crumpled, and a flag post was bent, but while a couple homes sustained exterior wind damage, no homes were destroyed and apparently no one was injured.
“If you had to order up a tornado just to see it, that would be the one,” Wersing said. “It could have been much worse.”
The NWS reported that the tornado tracked from near the Municipal Complex to the Greensburg-Jeannette Regional Airport, “creating a discontinuous path of minor tree and structural damage.”
Planes on the ground were apparently spared, Wersing said.
Westmoreland County Public Safety Director Bud Mertz said the storms point to the importance for people to sign up for mobile weather alerts to keep them safe from rapidly unfolding storms.
”We got lucky.”
Elsewhere, a tornado packing winds of 105 mph touched down in Pittsburgh’s Highland Park neighborhood, according to the National Weather Service.
The tornado that struck Highland Park about 4:40 p.m., causing damage around the Pittsburgh Zoo and Allegheny River Boulevard, was measured at an EF-1, said Rich Redmond, a National Weather Service meteorologist.
The cell that struck Highland Park had been seen minutes before above Pittsburgh’s Troy Hill neighborhood, Redmond said. It also was seen in Aspinwall around UPMC St. Margaret hospital.
Hendricks said Saturday morning that teams were able to get a better look at the Highland Park tornado on radar.
Despite the intensity of the winds, damage reports consisted primarily of downed trees near Washington Boulevard in the area of the Highland Park Bridge and Stanton Heights.
The zoo reopened as usual Saturday, with crews continuing to clean up storm-related debris. A statement issued by spokeswoman Alex Cauley said viewing of some animals might be delayed, but she reiterated that animals were unharmed and patrons and staff who sheltered in place also were unhurt.
“The Zoo experienced multiple downed trees, several damaged fences, a power outage, and toppled objects, branches, and debris throughout the park,” the statement read. “A large tree fell on a vehicle in our parking lot. Buildings were not significantly damaged.
“Crews worked through the night to restore power and clear as many critical pathways as possible.”
The weather service confirmed that another tornado had touched down in the village of Elrama along the Monongahela River in northern Washington County shortly before 3 p.m., Redmond said. It received reports of damage from that tornado, which also may have caused damage in Lincoln Borough, Redmond said.
On Saturday, the NWS team found evidence of sporadic damage as the storm strengthened and weakened while progressing toward Elizabeth in Allegheny County.
“We are still trying to determine the maximum wind speed,” said meteorologist Matthew Kramar.
He said it appeared somewhat stronger than what was observed in Westmoreland County, with several homes losing roof shingles or siding, large trees damaged, a mobile home losing a porch roof and railings and a pool damaged.
The weather service is looking into a fourth possible tornado location in Lincoln Place.
“Tornadoes do skip — they’ll hit an area, lift up, and drop another tornado down,” Redmond said.
The NWS received yet another report of a tornado at the Allegheny County Airport, but there was no damage that would allow for an assessment, Kramar said Saturday. He said that its EF rank would be unknown.
Those who see damage are asked to report it to the National Weather Service online .
Saturday aftermath
Utility crews worked to restore electrical power to remaining customers without it.
As 0f 7:15 p.m. Saturday, Duquesne Light reported 764 customers still without power in the Pittsburgh area, according to its website; West Penn Power reported only scattered outages of fewer than 20 customers after showing about 300 customers in the Finleyville area and 118 near New Kensington were without power in the morning.
A flash flood warning for the northern half of Allegheny County, including Pittsburgh and Tarentum, was issued Saturday morning until 8:45 a.m.
Flooding was reported in Baldwin and Duquesne.
Road closures due to the storm were rapidly dwindling Saturday as weather conditions improved and the sun reappeared in places.
As of 2:45 p.m., PennDOT reported these closures:
• Bocktown Road at McGovern Boulevard in Crescent Township – closed in each direction.

Before Friday, Western Pennsylvania already had seen a dozen tornadoes this year , which is double the yearly average. Six of the tornadoes had come in May alone.
Friday brought that tally to nine.
The last time the region experienced such a large onslaught of twisters was in May 1985. There were 11 that month.
The tornadoes Friday came less than a week after an outburst of twisters south of Pittsburgh. Last Saturday, three tornadoes were confirmed: in Finleyville in Washington County, the New Salem area in Fayette County and Fike Run in Fayette County, according to the weather service.

5 faculty won pitt’s health sciences ascending star award.
Five University of Pittsburgh faculty members won the 2024 Health Sciences Ascending Star awards. Established in 2022, the honor recognizes highly productive and creative midcareer faculty in Pitt’s six schools of the health sciences.
"This Ascending Star Award is just one tangible way in which we can recognize the excellence of faculty members whose career trajectories continue to offer great promise and to encourage them to continue that upward momentum, while also serving as role models and mentors to their junior colleagues," said Anantha Shekhar, senior vice chancellor for the health sciences and John and Gertrude Petersen Dean of the School of Medicine.
Each recipient will receive $25,000 in research support and give a lecture at Pitt this year.
Meet the recipients
Mo Ebrahimkhani, associate professor in Pitt Medicine’s Department of Pathology, leads the Laboratory for Synthetic Biology and Regenerative Medicine. Paul skenes had a boldly prophetic warning for batters before his 11-strikeout masterpiece, share this article.
Sure, Paul Skenes was dazzling in his debut after the Pittsburgh Pirates called up the number one prospect in baseball last Saturday.
The LSU product struck out seven batters in his first Major League start while giving up six hits, three earned runs and two walks over four innings in a 10-9 victory over the Chicago Cubs.
The only problem was that the way the schedule lined up, Skenes was going to have to face the Cubs for his second career start, too. This time at Wrigley Field. Surely there was no way he’d be able to fool the Pirates’ division rivals twice in one week, right? Hitters always adjust, right?
Well, Skenes adjusts, too. And he tried to warn the Cubs about what was coming on Friday before they even stepped to the plate.
“Go ahead and adjust. Good luck.” -Paul Skenes on hitters having more film to watch now pic.twitter.com/nzq9wwStBc — Talkin’ Baseball (@TalkinBaseball_) May 17, 2024
“Go ahead and adjust,” Skenes said with a smile. “Good luck.”
Then he went out and struck out 11 batters over six no-hit innings with just one walk. It took him 100 pitches, 67 of which went for strikes and defied physics with movement like this:
All 11 Paul Skenes strikeouts from his six no-hit innings! pic.twitter.com/mFvcfYhKLY — Talkin’ Baseball (@TalkinBaseball_) May 17, 2024
It goes without saying that this is both not normal and also extremely terrifying for the rest of baseball.
First of all, pitches shouldn’t be allowed to move like that and sit at 100 miles per hour . This guy is a wizard. He struck out the first seven batters he faced on Friday, just one shy of the all-time rookie record held by Jacob deGrom and Jim Deshaies. Instead he settles for the fifth-longest strikeout streak to begin a game in MLB history as Pittsburgh went on to win 9-3.
When Skenes says “good luck” he apparently means it in the way Liam Neeson does in Taken. It’s both genuine and a warning.
Of course the Pirates star is confident in his arsenal. After seeing what he did at Wrigley, it’d be impossible to feel any other way.

WHAT IS A WANDERING STAR?
Wandering stars, also called ‘intergalactic stars’, ‘intracluster stars’ or ‘rogue stars’, are stars that are not gravitationally tied to a par ticular galaxy – they exist between galaxies. These stars, first discovered in 1997, probably formed inside galaxies, but were later expelled, perhaps during galaxy mergers or by a close encounter with a supermassive black hole. Astronomers estimate that rogue stars comprise between 15–50 per cent of all stars in galaxy clusters. The Virgo galaxy cluster, for example, contains perhaps 1 trillion rogue stars! Closer to home, at least 675 rogue stars have been found between the Milk y Way and the Andromeda Galaxy. AG
