Travel Ruby Shares Critical Travel Tips for Las Vegas (But Many Work Anywhere)

YouTuber Travel Ruby does an excellent job sharing her experiences in Las Vegas, whether it be rooms, pools, restaurants, good deals and more. Some of her strongest tips are summarized in one of her latest videos, where she works through 10 must know tips for Las Vegas. But the real tip is many of these work outside of Las Vegas too.

I want to highlight a couple of her suggestions in today’s post, as well as add additional thoughts above and beyond her tips in the video.

Regularly Check Room Rates Against Your Reservation

One of her great tips that can work anywhere is to regularly check hotel pricing for the room you booked. In Las Vegas it can theoretically get a bit more complicated, because room comps can be in play, so I’m going to take her tip and break out a bit of additional advice on this, based on whether you’re comped or not.

Paid Room Rates

Ruby’s tip about checking to see if room prices have gone down is a great one, especially when booking direct with the hotels. Pricing is highly variable in Las Vegas, and things can evolve over time. So sometimes prices can go down, and if it does, you can contact the hotel and update your booking to get the lower rate, or cancel and rebook online.

The same can be said just about anywhere though – I often book direct through Marriott for rooms when I travel for cruises or to see family and friends. I will periodically check to see if the rates change; I have had examples of room rates going down, and being able to update my reservation to take advantage of that change.

Comped Rooms

If your room is already comped, why would you check back in? Well, in Las Vegas, many times comped rooms are part of a larger offer. And these offers can sometimes get updated. For instance, MGM began offering bonus mid-week free play for bookings made after a certain date.

When I visited Las Vegas in September/October, I had revised one of my bookings after that date, and the other I hadn’t. As it turns out I only got the mid-week resort credit on the one I had revised, because it now qualified for the new offer.

So it helps to check your offers and see if your offers have improved, and rebook if they have.

Similarly, if room rates are drifting downward, you may qualify for comped rooms in properties that have availability that you didn’t previously. Or you may qualify for a better room type.

This is a bit easier to do with Caesars than MGM, because you can see your rates even if you have something booked already. MGM is a bit tougher, but you can get a sense of how things are evolving from the room rate calendar, as it won’t show comps but it will show your price.

Avoid Overplanning Your Trip

I’ve talked about this in my suggestions about surviving longer trips to Vegas , but one of the biggest mistakes many make is overplanning their trip, and then tuckering themselves out and not accomplishing everything they’ve planned.

I now work with a wish list of things I want to do (I’m almost a dozen trips into Vegas, so my list now drifts beyond many of the basics into things that I just haven’t been able to make time for so far). I always aim to do at least one new thing in Vegas, whether stay at a new property, try a new experience, find new food options to enjoy or check out something I haven’t seen before, whether a museum, a show or whatnot.

But I also try not to put too many specifics down, preferring instead to have general ideas and play some of it by ear. At this point I have friends in Vegas, almost always seem to know someone who’s there when I am, and ultimately want to make time to hang with friends (which can be a great tip for slowing down gambling in the process).

Some people plan short trips because Vegas is “exhausting,” but it’s only exhausting if you overschedule yourself and run yourself ragged on your vacation. Of course, if all you can swing is a couple of nights, I get it, but as someone who’s never gone for less than a week, I always treat Vegas like a marathon, not a sprint.

Comparing Transportation Options

I previously shared my incomplete list of transportation options in Las Vegas , but there’s plenty of ways to get around, and if you’re not price comparing, you’re likely going to overpay a percentage of the time. Even just between Uber and Lyft the price differences can be striking.

There are lots of ways to get around, though, and depending on how quickly you want to get places, and how much walking you’re willing to do, there’s everything from free trams to rental cars, monorails to buses, so you can figure out what makes sense for you.

Of course this advice can work anywhere as well, although the transit options may differ. One visit to Miami I took a train up to visit someone in Fort Lauderdale, so knowing what transit options are available can be quite helpful.

Couple frustrated after Resorts World booking falls through

A local couple hasn’t pieced together why their Crockfords luxury hotel room reservation fell through at the newly opened Resorts World and why they only discovered that fact on the first day of their reservation.

All they know is they’re now staying at the Hilton Conrad hotel, and they’re not pleased with how things have played out.

“Last night, I checked in using their digital check-in, got an email that said, ‘You’re checked into Crockfords,’” said Alex Chapman, a Las Vegas resident who was celebrating his 35th birthday with a staycation at the new resort. “And this morning, I checked in my digital key, and it said, ‘Check in to Conrad. Also, we’re charging you $100 more.’”

They might not be alone. A travel vlogger who goes by the name Travel Ruby and her husband complained in a YouTube livestream Friday that — like the Chapmans — their Crockfords reservation was also changed at the last minute to a Hilton Conrad reservation without their knowledge.

Resorts World opened to the public at 11 p.m. Thursday as the first Strip resort built in a decade. It’s unclear how many of the rooms at its three Hilton-branded hotels opened. Crockfords is the property’s high-end hotel with 236 rooms and suites, a private entrance and tailored guest services.

Resorts World executives said in a statement to the Review-Journal that Crockfords is open in a limited capacity as staff “put the finishing touches on a few suites,” but multiple guests say they’ve been told otherwise by hotel employees.

“We’ve seen very high demand for Crockfords and will continue to release additional inventory following opening,” the statement read.

A spokeswoman declined to answer additional questions about room availability, potential guest transfers and accommodations.

The Resorts World booking page Friday said Crockfords bookings are “unavailable” until July 12. Hilton’s website also said no Crockfords rooms are available until that date.

A Hilton representative referred a comment request to Resorts World.

“Resorts World Las Vegas is an independently owned and operated property and we cannot speak on the hotel’s behalf,” the representative wrote in an email.

The Chapmans decided to take the Conrad room. In a phone conversation Friday evening from their Conrad room, Alex and Katrina Chapman said they’ve received conflicting explanations from Resorts World staff throughout the day.

The Chapmans said hotel staff told them that Crockfords was open — their room just wasn’t ready. Alex Chapman said that might make sense, as he’s noticed people in the Crockfords elevators.

“We came here and the first thing I asked the Conrad checking people was what’s going on with Crockfords, and she had no idea what I’m talking about,” Alex Chapman recalled. “And I said I heard it was closed. There’s no rooms. She goes, ‘No,’ just not the room we booked.”

But after Katrina Chapman reached out to Resorts World on Instagram to complain about their reservation, Alex Chapman got a call from an employee who said that the hotel was “completely closed.”

“That not a single human being was staying in there, that they couldn’t finish construction in time,” Alex Chapman said.

“He repeated that over and over,” added Katrina Chapman.

“No one was staying,” said Alex.

The vlogger Travel Ruby said in a Friday livestream from the hotel pool complex and also their Hilton Conrad room that she and her husband were told something similar. She said she and her husbanddidn’t find out their Crockfords reservation was canceled until arriving at the check-in desk Friday.

“They let us in the lobby and then she goes, ‘We have a room for you at the Conrad,’” Ruby begins, “and I’m like ‘I’m sorry?’ and they were like ‘Did no one contact you?’”

“No?” she continues, “They’re like ‘none of the Crockfords rooms are ready at all. None are ready. There’s no Crockfords rooms right now.”

Mr. Ruby adds: “They told us that Paris Hilton is staying here and even she isn’t staying in it.”

The couple said they were offered a comped suite for their next Resorts World stay because they weren’t contacted about their reservation change.

The Chapmans think their weekend might be a lost cause.

“It’s supposed to be three tiers of nice rooms. So we paid for the nice one,” Alex Chapman said.

Staff on property have been kind and helpful, Katrina Chapman said. Though the pair feels they’ve gotten the runaround, they’re trying to make the best of their stay, she said. They just want to know what happened.

“I still really have no idea,” Alex Chapman said.

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow: The Best of Moscow!

I just got back from one week in Moscow. And, as you might have already guessed, it was a mind-boggling experience. It was not my first trip to the Russian capital. But I hardly ever got enough time to explore this sprawling city. Visiting places for business rarely leaves enough time for sightseeing. I think that if you’ve got one week in Russia, you can also consider splitting your time between its largest cities (i.e. Saint Petersburg ) to get the most out of your trip. Seven days will let you see the majority of the main sights and go beyond just scratching the surface. In this post, I’m going to share with you my idea of the perfect travel itinerary for one week in Moscow.

Moscow is perhaps both the business and cultural hub of Russia. There is a lot more to see here than just the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Centuries-old churches with onion-shaped domes dotted around the city are in stark contrast with newly completed impressive skyscrapers of Moscow City dominating the skyline. I spent a lot of time thinking about my Moscow itinerary before I left. And this city lived up to all of my expectations.

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow

Day 1 – red square and the kremlin.

Metro Station: Okhotny Ryad on Red Line.

No trip to Moscow would be complete without seeing its main attraction. The Red Square is just a stone’s throw away from several metro stations. It is home to some of the most impressive architectural masterpieces in the city. The first thing you’ll probably notice after entering it and passing vendors selling weird fur hats is the fairytale-like looking Saint Basil’s Cathedral. It was built to commemorate one of the major victories of Ivan the Terrible. I once spent 20 minutes gazing at it, trying to find the perfect angle to snap it. It was easier said than done because of the hordes of locals and tourists.

As you continue strolling around Red Square, there’s no way you can miss Gum. It was widely known as the main department store during the Soviet Era. Now this large (yet historic) shopping mall is filled with expensive boutiques, pricey eateries, etc. During my trip to Moscow, I was on a tight budget. So I only took a retro-style stroll in Gum to get a rare glimpse of a place where Soviet leaders used to grocery shop and buy their stuff. In case you want some modern shopping experience, head to the Okhotny Ryad Shopping Center with stores like New Yorker, Zara, and Adidas.

To continue this Moscow itinerary, next you may want to go inside the Kremlin walls. This is the center of Russian political power and the president’s official residence. If you’re planning to pay Kremlin a visit do your best to visit Ivan the Great Bell Tower as well. Go there as early as possible to avoid crowds and get an incredible bird’s-eye view. There are a couple of museums that are available during designated visiting hours. Make sure to book your ticket online and avoid lines.

Day 2 – Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Tretyakov Gallery, and the Arbat Street

Metro Station: Kropotkinskaya on Red Line

As soon as you start creating a Moscow itinerary for your second day, you’ll discover that there are plenty of metro stations that are much closer to certain sites. Depending on your route, take a closer look at the metro map to pick the closest.

The white marble walls of Christ the Saviour Cathedral are awe-inspiring. As you approach this tallest Orthodox Christian church, you may notice the bronze sculptures, magnificent arches, and cupolas that were created to commemorate Russia’s victory against Napoleon.

Unfortunately, the current Cathedral is a replica, since original was blown to bits in 1931 by the Soviet government. The new cathedral basically follows the original design, but they have added some new elements such as marble high reliefs.

Home to some precious collection of artworks, in Tretyakov Gallery you can find more than 150,000 of works spanning centuries of artistic endeavor. Originally a privately owned gallery, it now has become one of the largest museums in Russia. The Gallery is often considered essential to visit. But I have encountered a lot of locals who have never been there.

Famous for its souvenirs, musicians, and theaters, Arbat street is among the few in Moscow that were turned into pedestrian zones. Arbat street is usually very busy with tourists and locals alike. My local friend once called it the oldest street in Moscow dating back to 1493. It is a kilometer long walking street filled with fancy gift shops, small cozy restaurants, lots of cute cafes, and street artists. It is closed to any vehicular traffic, so you can easily stroll it with kids.

Day 3 – Moscow River Boat Ride, Poklonnaya Hill Victory Park, the Moscow City

Metro Station: Kievskaya and Park Pobedy on Dark Blue Line / Vystavochnaya on Light Blue Line

Voyaging along the Moscow River is definitely one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of the city and see the attractions from a bit different perspective. Depending on your Moscow itinerary, travel budget and the time of the year, there are various types of boats available. In the summer there is no shortage of boats, and you’ll be spoiled for choice.

Travel Itinerary for One Week in Beijing

If you find yourself in Moscow during the winter months, I’d recommend going with Radisson boat cruise. These are often more expensive (yet comfy). They offer refreshments like tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and, of course, alcoholic drinks. Prices may vary but mostly depend on your food and drink selection. Find their main pier near the opulent Ukraine hotel . The hotel is one of the “Seven Sisters”, so if you’re into the charm of Stalinist architecture don’t miss a chance to stay there.

The area near Poklonnaya Hill has the closest relation to the country’s recent past. The memorial complex was completed in the mid-1990s to commemorate the Victory and WW2 casualties. Also known as the Great Patriotic War Museum, activities here include indoor attractions while the grounds around host an open-air museum with old tanks and other vehicles used on the battlefield.

How I Planned My Trip to Vietnam

The hallmark of the memorial complex and the first thing you see as you exit metro is the statue of Nike mounted to its column. This is a very impressive Obelisk with a statue of Saint George slaying the dragon at its base.

Maybe not as impressive as Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower , the skyscrapers of the Moscow City (otherwise known as Moscow International Business Center) are so drastically different from dull Soviet architecture. With 239 meters and 60 floors, the Empire Tower is the seventh highest building in the business district.

The observation deck occupies 56 floor from where you have some panoramic views of the city. I loved the view in the direction of Moscow State University and Luzhniki stadium as well to the other side with residential quarters. The entrance fee is pricey, but if you’re want to get a bird’s eye view, the skyscraper is one of the best places for doing just that.

Day 4 – VDNKh, Worker and Collective Farm Woman Monument, The Ostankino TV Tower

Metro Station: VDNKh on Orange Line

VDNKh is one of my favorite attractions in Moscow. The weird abbreviation actually stands for Russian vystavka dostizheniy narodnogo khozyaystva (Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy). With more than 200 buildings and 30 pavilions on the grounds, VDNKh serves as an open-air museum. You can easily spend a full day here since the park occupies a very large area.

Places to Visit in Barcelona That Aren’t Beaches

First, there are pavilions that used to showcase different cultures the USSR was made of. Additionally, there is a number of shopping pavilions, as well as Moskvarium (an Oceanarium) that features a variety of marine species. VDNKh is a popular venue for events and fairs. There is always something going on, so I’d recommend checking their website if you want to see some particular exhibition.

A stone’s throw away from VDNKh there is a very distinctive 25-meters high monument. Originally built in 1937 for the world fair in Paris, the hulking figures of men and women holding a hammer and a sickle represent the Soviet idea of united workers and farmers. It doesn’t take much time to see the monument, but visiting it gives some idea of the Soviet Union’s grandiose aspirations.

I have a thing for tall buildings. So to continue my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow I decided to climb the fourth highest TV tower in the world. This iconic 540m tower is a fixture of the skyline. You can see it virtually from everywhere in Moscow, and this is where you can get the best panoramic views (yep, even better than Empire skyscraper).

Parts of the floor are made of tempered glass, so it can be quite scary to exit the elevator. But trust me, as you start observing buildings and cars below, you won’t want to leave. There is only a limited number of tickets per day, so you may want to book online. Insider tip: the first tour is cheaper, you can save up to $10 if go there early.

Day 5 – A Tour To Moscow Manor Houses

Metro Station: Kolomenskoye, Tsaritsyno on Dark Green Line / Kuskovo on Purple Line

I love visiting the manor houses and palaces in Moscow. These opulent buildings were generally built to house Russian aristocratic families and monarchs. Houses tend to be rather grand affairs with impressive architecture. And, depending on the whims of the owners, some form of a landscaped garden.

During the early part of the 20th century though, many of Russia’s aristocratic families (including the family of the last emperor) ended up being killed or moving abroad . Their manor houses were nationalized. Some time later (after the fall of the USSR) these were open to the public. It means that today a great many of Moscow’s finest manor houses and palaces are open for touring.

20 Travel Tips I’ve Learned From Travelling The World

There are 20 manor houses scattered throughout the city and more than 25 in the area around. But not all of them easily accessible and exploring them often takes a lot of time. I’d recommend focusing on three most popular estates in Moscow that are some 30-minute metro ride away from Kremlin.

Sandwiched between the Moscow River and the Andropov Avenue, Kolomenskoye is a UNESCO site that became a public park in the 1920’s. Once a former royal estate, now it is one of the most tranquil parks in the city with gorgeous views. The Ascension Church, The White Column, and the grounds are a truly grand place to visit.

You could easily spend a full day here, exploring a traditional Russian village (that is, in fact, a market), picnicking by the river, enjoying the Eastern Orthodox church architecture, hiking the grounds as well as and wandering the park and gardens with wildflower meadows, apple orchards, and birch and maple groves. The estate museum showcases Russian nature at its finest year-round.

If my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow was a family tree, Tsaritsyno Park would probably be the crazy uncle that no-one talks about. It’s a large park in the south of the city of mind-boggling proportions, unbelievable in so many ways, and yet most travelers have never heard of it.

The palace was supposed to be a summer home for Empress Catherine the Great. But since the construction didn’t meet with her approval the palace was abandoned. Since the early 1990’s the palace, the pond, and the grounds have been undergoing renovations. The entire complex is now looking brighter and more elaborately decorated than at possibly any other time during its history. Like most parks in Moscow, you can visit Tsaritsyno free of charge, but there is a small fee if you want to visit the palace.

How To Stop Procrastinating When Trip Planning

Last, but by no means least on my Moscow itinerary is Kuskovo Park . This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path place. While it is not easily accessible, you will be rewarded with a lack of crowds. This 18th-century summer country house of the Sheremetev family was one of the first summer country estates of the Russian nobility. And when you visit you’ll quickly realize why locals love this park.

Like many other estates, Kuskovo has just been renovated. So there are lovely French formal garden, a grotto, and the Dutch house to explore. Make sure to plan your itinerary well because the estate is some way from a metro station.

Day 6 – Explore the Golden Ring

Creating the Moscow itinerary may keep you busy for days with the seemingly endless amount of things to do. Visiting the so-called Golden Ring is like stepping back in time. Golden Ring is a “theme route” devised by promotion-minded journalist and writer Yuri Bychkov.

Having started in Moscow the route will take you through a number of historical cities. It now includes Suzdal, Vladimir, Kostroma, Yaroslavl and Sergiev Posad. All these awe-inspiring towns have their own smaller kremlins and feature dramatic churches with onion-shaped domes, tranquil residential areas, and other architectural landmarks.

I only visited two out of eight cities included on the route. It is a no-brainer that Sergiev Posad is the nearest and the easiest city to see on a day trip from Moscow. That being said, you can explore its main attractions in just one day. Located some 70 km north-east of the Russian capital, this tiny and overlooked town is home to Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, UNESCO Site.

Sergiev Posad is often described as being at the heart of Russian spiritual life. So it is uncommon to see the crowds of Russian pilgrims showing a deep reverence for their religion. If you’re traveling independently and using public transport, you can reach Sergiev Posad by bus (departs from VDNKh) or by suburban commuter train from Yaroslavskaya Railway Station (Bahnhof). It takes about one and a half hours to reach the town.

Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is a great place to get a glimpse of filling and warming Russian lunch, specifically at the “ Gostevaya Izba ” restaurant. Try the duck breast, hearty potato and vegetables, and the awesome Napoleon cake.

Day 7 – Gorky Park, Izmailovo Kremlin, Patriarch’s Ponds

Metro Station: Park Kultury or Oktyabrskaya on Circle Line / Partizanskaya on Dark Blue Line / Pushkinskaya on Dark Green Line

Gorky Park is in the heart of Moscow. It offers many different types of outdoor activities, such as dancing, cycling, skateboarding, walking, jogging, and anything else you can do in a park. Named after Maxim Gorky, this sprawling and lovely park is where locals go on a picnic, relax and enjoy free yoga classes. It’s a popular place to bike around, and there is a Muzeon Art Park not far from here. A dynamic location with a younger vibe. There is also a pier, so you can take a cruise along the river too.

How to Save Money While Traveling in Europe

The Kremlin in Izmailovo is by no means like the one you can find near the Red Square. Originally built for decorative purposes, it now features the Vernissage flea market and a number of frequent fairs, exhibitions, and conferences. Every weekend, there’s a giant flea market in Izmailovo, where dozens of stalls sell Soviet propaganda crap, Russian nesting dolls, vinyl records, jewelry and just about any object you can imagine. Go early in the morning if you want to beat the crowds.

All the Bulgakov’s fans should pay a visit to Patriarch’s Ponds (yup, that is plural). With a lovely small city park and the only one (!) pond in the middle, the location is where the opening scene of Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita was set. The novel is centered around a visit by Devil to the atheistic Soviet Union is considered by many critics to be one of the best novels of the 20th century. I spent great two hours strolling the nearby streets and having lunch in the hipster cafe.

Conclusion and Recommendations

To conclude, Moscow is a safe city to visit. I have never had a problem with getting around and most locals are really friendly once they know you’re a foreigner. Moscow has undergone some serious reconstruction over the last few years. So you can expect some places to be completely different. I hope my one week Moscow itinerary was helpful! If you have less time, say 4 days or 5 days, I would cut out day 6 and day 7. You could save the Golden Ring for a separate trip entirely as there’s lots to see!

Love of travel earns Fiji sevens rugby captain Raijieli Daveua an Olympic medal

SINGAPORE – At seven, Raijieli Daveua was just a girl who dreamed of travelling, but little did she know that her passion would bring her an Olympic medal.

Eight years ago, the netballer made the switch to rugby as she believed it would give her more opportunities to see the world.

Rugby has since taken her across Europe, Asia and the Pacific.

During that time, she won bronze with the Fiji women’s sevens rugby team at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, and a silver at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

This week, rugby has brought Daveua, 31, back here for the HSBC SVNS Singapore as the women’s competition makes its debut.

Daveua, who works as a corrections officer, is no stranger to Singapore.

Over a decade ago, the defender played for Netball Super League side Mission Mannas from 2013 to 2014 on a two-year contract.

She said: “I’ve been to countless countries and getting to travel, meeting new people, new cultures, making new friends, I love that.”

Of all the countries she has visited, Singapore remains her favourite.

“I love the food here and I love the people because it’s the first country that I travelled to; it has a special place in my heart.”

Her family has been very supportive of her career choices in sport and Daveua said her parents “are happy as long as I am happy”.

“Training is very different, because for netball you only have a small court.

“Rugby, you have a big field and you have to run around, but it’s all in the heart, and when you enjoy it, nothing is impossible.

“It’s just the ball, it changed from a circle ball to an oval, nothing new. The agility I’ve still got it, my dad used to play rugby as well and I think rugby is in my DNA.”

She remembers her Olympic debut in 2016 in Rio as “nerve-racking”, adding: “I never played in the series... I never learnt a lot of rugby things but it’s in our blood.

“So I just go there and do whatever we’re supposed to do, help my team.

“It was an amazing feeling for me being part of that team (in Tokyo) and winning the bronze medal, bringing it home.”

The Fiji captain has come a long way since and wants to mark the end of her career with a podium finish at the Paris Olympics.

She said: “I will take one game at a time... after Singapore I will (head to) Madrid and we will see what’s next, but our main focus is to go there and stand on that podium again.

“After the Olympics, I’m going to hang my boots and go back there and I started to do some new coaching, and we’ll see from there.”

The second day of action at the HSBS SVNS Singapore saw the Fiji women’s team losing 60-0 to Australia in their final Pool C match, but they bounced back to advance to the semi-finals after beating Japan 12-10 at the National Stadium.

They will play New Zealand in a bid for their first Cup final this season, while Australia will face France.

The HSBC SVNS’ revamped format featuring the men and women’s matches runs though all seven series, with the Grand Final in Madrid from May 31 to June 2.

8 Best Things To Do In Rugby, Tennessee

Explore a Tennessee town with British Isles charm.

As you wind along scenic byways in Tennessee’s Cumberland Plateau, mixed hardwood forests stretch across lush landscapes. Towering walls of ruddy-brown sandstone facilitate moments of wonder. The air smells like wet river rocks drying in the sun and the sound of silence is interrupted only by the wind through the leaves. As you round a shady bend of trees, tucked in these rich, Appalachian naturescapes is something unexpected—1880s Victorian architecture checkers the roadside with cheerful paint colors and intricate woodwork. Welcome to Rugby.

Founded in 1880 by British author Thomas Hughes, Rugby was meant to be a utopian community for the younger sons of English gentry who didn’t receive inheritances like the eldest did. Hughes dreamed of a class-free, cooperative town able to flourish away from Britain’s rigidity. Hughes formed his British colony alongside the region’s established Appalachian homesteads . What grew was more than 60 Victorian-designed buildings and around 300 residents at its peak. Rugby blended British and Appalachian cultures in a way that makes it a truly unique Tennessee town —still flying the British flag alongside the American flag to this day.

Know the Best Times to Visit

Current estimates of Rugby’s year-round population range from 50 to 85 people. Volunteers manage many of the town’s services. As such, activities are limited during certain days or seasons. Before visiting, check the town’s website for the latest hours or call 423-628-2441.

In general, Sundays are particularly quiet in Rugby, with the area’s limited dining options closed and shops operating at reduced hours. If you plan to explore on a Sunday, start early or pick a date when the town is hosting a special event.

One of Rugby’s most popular activities is Irish road bowling. Played down the main road through town, participants take turns throwing an iron ball down the street. The team that makes it to the route’s finish in the fewest throws wins. If you’re one of the champions, you’ll get to pose for a photo with the charred—having survived a local fire in 2020—event trophy, and have your accomplishment declared on the town’s Facebook page.

Other events throughout the year include grill outs, paint and sip art classes, bicycle rides, British car shows, tea table setting contests, Victorian fashion shows , and afternoon teas. Founder’s Day, celebrating Thomas Hughes, is held annually in October, and the British Festival & Queen’s Tea is held every May. Eat Local or Pack a Picnic

Rugby has two dining options. R. M. Brooks General Store , a rustic little building from the 1930s, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and open every day except Wednesdays and Sundays for breakfast and lunch. Get a homemade fried pie and bologna sandwich to go or dine in for an order of biscuits and gravy while you enjoy the shop’s pot-bellied stove, rocking chairs, old-fashioned sliding soda case, original 1880s post office, and plethora of knickknacks.

  The Canteen is a food truck in the town’s center adjacent to several picnic tables perfect for a relaxing outdoor lunch or dinner. It’s open Wednesday through Saturday, offering decadent hot and cold sandwiches, such as the Ploughman’s—ham, gouda, apples, mixed greens, honey, and walnut mayo on a hoagie roll. You’ll also find pork or shrimp served as tacos or alongside a healthy dose of grits .

If you can’t make the hours for these local joints, plan to pack your snacks for the day. From ancient boulders on the banks of the Clear Fork River to grassy nooks under the shade of a more than 100-year-old arborvitae tree, Rugby is peppered with picnic spots .

Take a Guided Tour of the Town

Start at the Historic Rugby Visitor Centre & Theatre when you get to town. This facility is a partnership between Historic Rugby, Inc. and Big South Fork National Recreation Area. You’ll be able to get maps, view exhibits, and ask a local historian and park ranger any questions you have. It’s also where guided town tours begin with a free showing of the 22-minute documentary, The Power of a Dream , about Rugby’s founding.

From here, your guide will walk you to the 1884 Kingstone Lisle—the town founder’s home. The elaborate Victorian building has a stained yellow pine interior with deep maroon drapes, woven rugs, and upholstered furniture . It’s filled with relics from the period, such as an 1880 baby grand piano and decorative sculptures carved by the same artist Queen Victoria herself used.

Your next stop is the 1887 Christ Church Episcopal, which still holds services today. Its stunning stained glass is original from 1889, brought over from Germany. The two panels are dedicated to important women from the town: Mary Hughes (the town founder’s mother) and Mary Blacklock (the mother of the church’s first resident priest).

As you leave the manicured grounds of the church through a row of boxwood shrubs , you’ll cross the road to the 1882 Thomas Hughes Free Public Library. The old building smells like the musty first-edition pages it hosts, with more than 7,000 books lining its floor to ceiling shelves. 

The tour ends next-door at the 1907 Rugby Schoolhouse with a self-guided walk through exhibits about the town’s history, including details on its Appalachian families. Guided tours are $7 for adults, $6 for seniors, $4 for students K–12, and free for younger children. They’re offered four times daily Thursday through Saturday, and twice on Sundays. The town also hosts after-dark, haunted tours , which you can reserve online .

Shop for Antiques and Local Art

As you walk through town, enjoy its local businesses housed in picturesque Victorian-style structures. The Rugby Commissary is a reconstruction of the original 1880s building that sold everything from garters to plowshares. Today, it hosts Victorian-era books and history materials, crafts and jewelry from local artisans, and products from the British Isles.

The Spirit of Red Hill Nature Art & Oddiments store is hosted in the reconstructed Alexander-Perrigo House, a boarding home built in 1890. You’ll find it filled with antiques, art, and other gifts to take as souvenirs from your visit.

Explore the Massengale Homeplace 

Just behind the visitor center is an entry point to Rugby State Natural Area , a 762-acre preserve that follows Little Creek to White Oak Creek. This densely forested broad gorge boasts tulip poplars, red maples, sourwoods, northern red oaks, white oaks, and hickories. The Massengale Loop Trail is a 1.2-mile walk through these woods to the crest of Allerton Ridge. This is where the Massengale family, in the 1830s, formed the first Appalchian settlement in this portion of the Cumberland Plateau. 

About mid-way through the loop , you’ll find interpretive signs explaining the archeological surveying and testing that dated the Massengales’ cabin to 1859 and see remnants of its sandstone corners, chimney, and black locust split rail fencing. A spur trail from the homeplace will take you to the family’s original springhouse, where water still trickles today.

Visit the Laurel Dale Cemetery

A short, gravel road dead-ends at the Laurel Dale Cemetery, an active graveyard that’s the resting place for many of Rugby’s early colonists. Each September, the town hosts a lantern tour of the gravesites and tells the stories of ten settlers, using their own words from letters, diaries, and other accounts. The event has limited capacity, so purchase tickets in advance .

You can also rent an audio player from the visitor center for a self-guided tour of the cemetery. You’ll hear voices of the past as you stand near headstones like that of 90-year-old Margaret E. Hughes, who passed away in 1887.

Hike to Gentleman’s Swimming Hole

Rugby is an entry point to Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area , 125,000 acres of wilderness on the Cumberland Plateau that’s managed by the National Park Service. The park protects the free-flowing Big South Fork of the Cumberland River, along with its tributaries, and showcases towering sandstone bluffs and deep gorges. It has around 150 miles of hiking trails .

Across from Laurel Dale Cemetery, you’ll find a trailhead to Gentleman’s Swimming Hole and the Meeting of the Waters. This 2.1-mile loop was mostly built by Rugby colonists in the 1880s for the town’s men to have access to the Clear Fork River for bathing. Along the trail, you’ll find numbered posts at points of interest. You can pick up a trail guide for the loop at the visitor center, which includes historical, cultural, and geological interpretation for each stop.

If you don’t want to hike the full loop, you can opt to walk the first 0.4 miles down the gorge to Gentleman’s Swimming Hole and backtrack to the parking area—just note that it’s a steep climb, so flip flops are not advised. If you complete the loop, you’ll pass the confluence of White Oak Creek and Clear Fork River, known as the Meeting of the Waters. The trail gives a scenic taste of the park’s sandstone cliffs, caves, and slot canyons.

The rustic Pioneer Cottage, another three-bedroom, was Rugby’s first frame house and where the town’s founder stayed in 1880. The Ivy Cottage is a 1940s two-bedroom home with eclectic vintage decor that was moved to town from Henry and Etta Hamlin’s farm at Horseshoe Bend. The Ivy Annex on the same property is a one-bedroom apartment decorated in a 1970s style. These options can be booked through Airbnb.
