Suriya, 'time' and again

Director Vikram Kumar's 24, starring Surya in triple role, is the best science fiction and fantasy drama made in India after Mr. India .

Actor Suriya should be appreciated for his consistent efforts to stand out among his peers, who have been hanging onto the tried and tested formula of commercial a.k.a masala films just to survive another Friday at the box office.

In spite of having the largest and the most diverse film industry, films from the genres of science-fiction, superhero, and fantasy with high standard special effects are a rarity in India. When filmmakers attempt on such genres, movies either suffer from sub-standard special effects or poor writing. It is an another rarity to see a filmmaker get this both factors straight and right.

Director Vikram Kumar's 24 , starring Surya in triple role, is the best science fiction and fantasy drama, involving a watch, made in India since Mr. India. The director hasn't been ambitious with computer graphics, he has made a minimal but very effective use of them and keeps audience invested in the film with witty and engaging storytelling.

It is 1990 and Sethuraman (Suriya), an Indian scientist, has just finished inventing a watch that allows its owner to travel back and forth in time. Before he could fully come to terms with his landmark invention and celebrate the success with his wife Priya (Nithya Menen) and infant son Mani, his megalomaniac twin brother Athreya (Suriya again), walks into his house and changes the course of the story.

In a series of twist and turns, Priya and Sethuraman are dead. Athreya is crippled and in coma. The baby and the device ends up at the hands of a stranger woman Satya (Sharanya).

It is 2016, Mani, is now 26-year-old and is a watch mechanic. The priceless creation of his father all these years remained locked up in small wooden safe-box as its key was lying at a clenched fist of Athreya. A fire incident at hospital, triggered by an eagle feather, wakes up Athreya from coma, who drops the key on the hospital floor, which eventually ends up at Mani's watch shop.

Mani opens the box and begins to learn the power of the device. Of million things he could possibly be doing with that device, he uses it to impress his love interest Sathya, played by Samantha Ruth Prabhu.

He freezes time, to alter his environment, rewinds the time back to re-engage in the same conversation with impressive responses. He even alters the outcome of a crucial cricket match between India and Sri Lanka. The chemistry between Mani and Satya is one of the highlight of the film. They both are charming and leaves you wanting for more of them onscreen.

On the other hands, Athreya hunts for the device and even tries to create one for himself. Following another series of twits and turns, Mani and Athreya come face to face just before the interval. There is a small action sequence. At the end, Athreya empties his handgun into Mani and chops off his hand along with the watch.

However, Athreya learns that he can only time travel and change events that happened in last 24 hours and can't go beyond it. So he plans to 'unkill' Mani and trick him into modifying the watch that would enable him to travel 26 years back in time and fulfill his ambition.

Whether Athreya succeeds or not in his evil play makes the rest of the film.

Director Vikram has built an interesting premise for a sci-fi movie with dollops of fantasy and commercial elements. The romance between Suriya and Samantha is charming, funny and refreshing. Sharanya leaves a mark as an innocent single mother.

Suriya has tried to show variation among his three characters. His performance as Athreya stands out among the pack.

There are no forcefully injected songs in the film. Music by A.R. Rahman coupled with beautiful locales in the songs, has worked in film's favour. Cinematography by Tirru is another plus for the movie.

Overall, 24 as a film is far from perfect. But Suriya's charming and witty performance encourages you to overlook all other shortcomings and logical follies. It is a movie you won't regret watching this summer.

Film: 24 Director: Vikram Kumar Cast: Suriya, Sharanya, Samantha, Nithya Menen Rating: 3/5

30 Best Suriya Movies and Where to Watch Them

Published on.

time travel movie surya

Shaurya Singh Thapa

Official JustWatch writer

Starting out in the 2000s and still reigning supreme with hype-worthy projects like the fantasy actioner Kanguva. Suriya has been a prominent figure in the Tamil film industry. If you wish to have a look at the Tamil superstar’s greatest hits, here’s the ultimate watchlist of the best Suriya movies.

Where to watch Suriya’s best movies?

Prime Video offers some of Suriya’s best movies in recent times, like Jai Bhim and Soorarai Pottru. Other titles are available on Voot, ZEE5, Netflix, and Sun NXT.

What sets Suriya apart in the Tamil industry?

Born as Saravanan Sivakumar in Chennai, India, Suriya made his acting debut in 1997 with the romantic action thriller Nerukku Ner (which notably featured fellow Tamil star Thalapathy Vijay). However, it was his breakthrough role as a misunderstood social misfit in the 2001 action drama Nandha that marked the beginning of his rise to stardom.

Known for his intense emotional prowess and ability to portray a wide range of characters (often twice in the same movie), Suriya has become a beloved figure among Tamil cinema audiences. His dedication to his craft is evident in his diverse filmography, which spans across genres such as action, drama, romance, and science fiction.

How to watch Suriya’s movies by genre?

Notable films like the cop drama Kaakha Kaakha , the sci-fi martial arts flick 7Aum Arivu (with Suriya in a double role as legendary martial artist Boddhidharma and his future descendant) and the military-focused father-son drama Vaaranam Aayiram showcased his dramatic capabilities and garnered critical acclaim.

Suriya's success is not limited to regional cinema; he has also made a mark in the national film circuits. His role as a mustachioed, tough-as-nails police officer in the 2010 film Singam and its sequels established him as an action star and earned him a pan-Indian fan base. Singam inspired a Bollywood franchise of the same name with Ajay Devgn filling in for Suriya. Interestingly, the Hindi actor also acted in Suriya's role as a student leader in Yuva, a Hindi remake of the acclaimed Tamil political drama Ayitha Ezhuthu .

Another pan-Indian cult classic to stream is the neo-noir  Ghajini that starred Suriya as a good-natured businessman who suffers from short-term memory loss and sets out on a blood path of vengeance after his ladylove is brutally murdered. Inspired by elements from Christopher Nolan’s Memento , Ghajini turned Suriya into an action star but with a sense of introspective maturity. Ghajini’s commercial success inspired an equally well-received Bollywood movie of the same name with Aamir Khan in the lead.

With the turn of the decade, the actor's forayed into experimental and socially relevant films. The 2016 sci-fi drama 24 continued Suriya’s tendency to play multiple characters, this time playing a trio of identical faces. Revolving around a time-traveling watch and its catastrophic consequences, the movie was a game changer for sci-fi in Tamil films.

A passionate advocate of social causes like public literacy for the underprivileged, Suriya’s commitment to impactful storytelling could further be witnessed in social dramas like the anti-caste-legal thriller Jai Bhim that featured him as Advocate Chandru, a real-life lawyer and activist who fought for lower castes in Tamil Nadu.

Why is Soorarai Pottru Suriya’s best movies?

The National Award-winning underdog tale Soorarai Pottru offered a memorable performance by Suriya as a villager who dreams of starting his own affordable low-cost airline, a Herculean task he archives after a string of personal and bureaucratic challenges. An inspiring performance inspired by the real-life story of aviation industry pioneer G Gopinath, Suriya evoked a nuanced sentimentality from his viewers. The pandemic might have prevented Soorarai Pottru from getting a widespread theatrical release but its release on Prime Video was enough to draw raves from critics and audiences alike.

#MarkAntony HYPE has been HUGE🔥 I didn't realise the film would become this huge, damn. — BollywoodReviewer (@RayanBaig8) September 15, 2023

The film has become  IMDb’s most anticipated Indian film. Taking the second spot on the list is Leo, followed by Thank You For Coming, Salaar, Chandramukhi 2, Fukrey 3, Skanda: The Attacker, Mission Raniganj, Sukhee and The Vaccine War.

Sharing his excitement for the movie Vishal had earlier told ANI, "The South Indian film called Mark Anthony is already creating a big buzz. We have launched the Hindi trailer and are looking forward to releasing the movie on September 15th in other South Indian languages and the dubbed version will be released on September 22 in the Hindi language."

He added, "Mark Anthony is a science fiction and time travel film. It is a period film. It is interesting to see how it unfolds all the surprises. Even Surya sir is doing dual roles of father and son."

About Mark Antony, SJ Suryah said, "The film has a very challenging role because it includes dual roles and different timelines like 1995, 1965, and 1975. By changing the past we make changes in future too, so this is very challenging and interesting. Though it’s a dual role it feels like you are doing five roles".

Thx a lot for the great response all over world 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏 … 01/01/22 my tweet after hearing #MarkAntony story Narration from dir @Adhikravi sir (puratchi thalapathy @VishalKOfficial sir, @vinod_ sir)🥰🥰🥰Feeling happy movie making U all happy 🥰🥰🥰🥰love U all… https://t.co/v4Xz99Mqhp — S J Suryah (@iam_SJSuryah) September 15, 2023

Director Adhik Ravichandran said, "I always want to change a few things in my past so we couldn’t do that in real. So, I thought what If he gets a phone like this and you know changes that happened in past will reflect in future? That was the main idea of the movie then I brought into gangsters and all those things that will keep the audience entertained".

12 Best Suriya Movies You Must See

of 12 Best Suriya Movies You Must See

Born to star parents, it was only a matter of time before he himself became a star. And star he did become. Born as Sivakumar and rechristened Suriya by none other than Mani Ratnam, Suriya was destined to be a star. The path though was anything but easy, from being ridiculed for his height to suffering from a lack of confidence Suriya overcame it all and today is one of the most talented actors in world cinema. In 40 movies over a career spanning 2 decades, Suriya has enthralled everyone with numerous performances.

With that said, here is the list of top Surya films, carefully selected from his vast filmography. You can also stream some of these Suriya movies on Netflix or Amazon Prime.

12. Nandha (2001)

After 4 unproductive years, Suriya announced himself with his subtle portrayal of a juvenile convict who wants a second chance at life and also yearns for his mother’s love. Even while sharing screen space with a stalwart like Rajkiran, Suriya holds his own and this made everyone take notice of the actor that Suriya was. Bala’s realistic portrayal of a convict’s struggles coupled with Suriya’s terrific acting gives us a film that will be etched in our memories for a long time.

11. Pitamagan (2003)

Bala once again brings out the actor in Suriya in ‘Pitamagan’. Till then Suriya had always been accused of not being natural in front of the camera, but in ‘Pitamagan’ we see a Suriya who has broken all shackles and acts like no one is watching. You know you can act well if people notice you even when you are sharing screen space with none other than Vikram, and that is exactly what Suriya does. Deservedly Suriya won his first Filmfare award for this movie.

10. 24 (2016)

Time travel movies are a rarity in Tamil Cinema, equally rare is the same person playing three characters in a movie. ‘24’ is the beautiful amalgamation of these 2 rarities with Suriya playing a charming watch mechanic, a wacky scientist and a menacing villain with equal ease. Suriya single headedly carries this movie on his broad shoulders with the performance of a lifetime.

9. 7 am Arivu (2011)

Ace director A.R Murugadoss teams up with Suriya to bring us the forgotten story of an Indian saint named Bodhidharma who is credited with bringing Kung fu to China. Playing dual roles Suriya with his majestic looks perfectly fits the bill of a Prince turned Saint and at the same time his boyish charm gives life to Aravindh, a happy go lucky circus artist. Watch it because this is a story that everyone should know.

8. Kaakha Kaakha (2003)

The beginning of Director Gautham Vasudev Menon’s cop trilogy has Suriya playing an honest cop with great conviction. As part of a special team of encounter specialists, Suriya shoots down the head of a notorious gang. Now his brother is out for vengeance. Who comes out on top forms the rest of the story. With strong female characters and crisp dialogues, this is one of the better cop dramas in Kollywood.

7. Perazahagan (2004)

The title literally means ‘Someone with beauty in their name’. Quite ironic for a movie which has Suriya in dual characters with one of them playing a hunchback. ‘Perazhagan’ is refreshing in the way it treats the character with the hunch. Masking his deformity great with the hunch never feels like a deformity but in fact, leads to some very funny scenes. At the same time, Suriya as the college student is Swag personified. With a beautiful message, this movie will surely leave a smile on your face.

6. Vaaranam Aayiram (2008)

Even I didn’t know Suriya has played dual roles in so many movies before writing this article. Suriya teams up with Gautam Vasudev Menon to bring us a Father-Son story which has Suriya going through the ups and downs of life and how his father (also played by Suriya) guides him. Said to be inspired by the director’s own relationship with his father the movie has Suriya playing a scrawny teenager, A college student, A drug addict and finally an Army Officer. Talk about variations in a single movie! ‘Vaaranam Aayiram ’is truly a feather in Suriya’s cap.

5. Mounam Pesiyathe (2002)

Suriya plays Gautham, an angry young man with no interest towards love and breaks away from the happy go lucky characters he had been playing till then. This love story is a case of mistaken identities with a climax that is refreshing even by today’s standards. Although not perfect, a brooding Suriya and an evergreen soundtrack smother over the little flaws the film has.

4. Aaytha Ezhuthu (2004)

‘Aaytha Ezhutu ’ refers to the last letter of the Tamil alphabet which consists of 3 dots. These three dots symbolize the three main characters around which the story revolves.Mani Ratnam manages to put together an ensemble cast consisting of Suriya, Madhavan, and Sidharth among others. Suriya plays the leader of a youth organization which wants to enter politics. The obstacles he faces and how Sidharth and Madhavan get involved forms the crux of the story. Suriya lets his eyes do most of the talking and makes us go weak on our feet.

3. Ayan (2008)

Hitherto known for playing closer to life and realistic characters, ‘Ayan’ helped Suriya come out of the stereotype and established himself as a commercial star. Playing a suave conman with a not so suave dialect we just can’t take our eyes off Suriya whenever he is on screen and the slick screenplay makes sure our eyes are glued to the screen even if he is not on screen. Chartbuster songs, a thrilling cat and mouse game make ‘Ayan’ a complete package and one of Suriya’s highest grosser.

2. Singam (2010)

Suriya’s transformation as a commercial hero was complete when he starred in this Cop flick directed by Hari. Playing the titular role Suriya is a bundle of energy throughout the film and is the heart and soul of the movie. Hari manages to tell the struggles an honest cop faces while trying to get rid of thugs in the city. What looks like a dated story is brought to life by Suriya’s performance and Hari’s bullet train of a screenplay.

1. Ghajini (2005)

A remake of Christopher Nolan’s Neo noir Psychological thriller ‘Memento’ directed by A.R Murugadoss, ’Ghajini’ has Suriya playing a man suffering from anterograde amnesia who uses photos and tattoos to somehow find the men responsible for the death of his girlfriend. Sporting a buff look with a bald hairstyle Suriya has our sympathies as a confused patient and at the same time looks suave and sophisticated while playing a businessman. Unlike ‘Memento’ this film has a linear screenplay but Suriya’s performance never lets us take our eyes off the screen.

There is a lot going on in the trailer of Mark Antony – action, comedy, time travel and gangsters with ‘discipline’. Headlined by Vishal and SJ Suryah, Mark Antony is written and directed by Adhik Ravichandran .

The two-minute-fifty-second trailer begins with a line, “Welcome to the world of Mark Antony, bro,” as the makers give a solid glimpse into the film’s world, with striking visuals, stunning action sequences and colourful frames, all set to the foot tapping tunes of music composer GV Prakash Kumar.

Billed as period science-fiction action comedy, Mark Antony features Vishal in a double role of father and son. The film also stars Suneel, Selvaraghavan and Ritu among others. Mark Antony is produced by S Vinod Kumar.

The film is gearing to release worldwide on September 15. Mark Antony is an important film for both the star and the director. Filmmaker Adhik will hope to bounce back with the project after consecutive disappointments like Anbanavan Asaradhavan Adangadhavan and Bagheera.

Vishal, too, would hope to strike big with Mark Antony after consecutive mixed-bag features like Laththi, Veerame Vaagai Soodum and Enemy.

Suriya

Actor, Producer

Born July 23, 1975 in Madras, Tamil Nadu, India

Suriya was born to actor Sivakumar and his wife Lakshmi in Chennai but brought up in Coimbatore. He is the eldest of three children; his younger brother is actor Karthi Sivakumar and he has a younger sister named Brindha Sivakumar. He attended PSBB School and St. Bede's School in Chennai and graduated from Loyola College with a Bachelor of Commerce degree. Before his career in films, Suriya worked at a garment export factory for eight months. To avoid nepotism, he did not reveal himself to his boss as Sivakumar's son, but his boss ultimately learned the truth himself. He was initially offered the lead role by Director Vasanth in his film Aasai (1995), but he rejected the offer citing a lack of interest in an acting career. He later debuted in Vasanth's own 1997 film Nerrukku Ner, produced by Mani Ratnam when he was 22 years of age. The stage name Suriya was bestowed on him by Ratnam to avoid a clash of names with established actor Saravanan. Vijay, who would also go on to become a leading contemporary actor in Kollywood, co-starred with him in the film. This was followed by a series of roles in commercially unsuccessful films in the late 1990s. In 2001, he starred in Siddique's comedy film Friends, also co-starring Vijay, which became a super hit. His major break in acting came in the form of Nandha, which was directed by Bala. Playing the role of an ex-convict who is very attached to his mother, he received a Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Actor. His next venture was Vikraman's Unnai Ninaithu followed by Mounam Pesiyadhe directed by debutant Ameer Sultan, which became a hit film & a cult classic. In 2003, he starred in Gautham Menon's Kaakha Kaakha, a film about the life of a police officer. The film opened to positive reviews and became a Blockbuster at the box office. Suriya also received an ITFA award for Best Actor for his role in the film. Next, his portrayal of a happy-go-lucky village crook with a comic touch in Bala's Pithamagan, along with Vikram, won him the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor. In 2004, he played dual roles in Perazhagan, as an aggressive boxer and a handicapped phone booth keeper. Suriya's performance won positive reviews from critics. The film became a successful venture at the box office, and Suriya won his first Filmfare Award for Best Actor. The same year, he portrayed the role of a student leader in Mani Ratnam's political drama Ayitha Ezhuthu along with Madhavan and Siddarth which received highly critical acclaim and became a commercial success. Suriya signed on to feature in the psychological thriller, Ghajini directed by A. R. Murugadoss in November 2004; he played the role of a patient suffering from short-term memory loss. Ghajini was released in late 2005 and became a Blockbuster and was the third highest-grossing film of that year in Tamil. Suriya's role was unanimously praised. Later he worked in Hari's action film Aaru and the film received a positive response at the box office. Suriya's 2006 release was N. Krishna's Sillunu Oru Kaadhal. He acted opposite his wife Jyothika Saravanan in the film, which took a good opening but became an average grosser. In 2007, Suriya's solitary release was Vel, which became a hit at the box office. His next release was Vaaranam Aayiram, a collaboration with Gautham Menon, after the success of Kaakha Kaakha. Playing dual roles for the third time in his career, Suriya appeared as father and son, portraying scenes as a 16-year-old and as a 65-year-old. Suriya described the project as "unique" and "straight from the heart", describing the physical hardships he endured during the making. He lost weight and prepared a six-pack for the film through an eight-month fitness regime without steroids, with the movie being a trendsetter for other leading actors from South India. The film became commercially successful at the box office upon release and received positive reviews from film critics, with Suriya's performance being lauded. His portrayals also fetched him several notable awards, including the Filmfare Award for Best Actor, a Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Actor by the jury and the Vijay Award for Best Actor in 2008. The film also went on to receive a National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Tamil in 2008. In 2009, Suriya's first release was K. V. Anand's action-thriller Ayan, which went on to become the highest-grossing Tamil film of the year. Upon release, the film won positive reviews and Suriya's performance was again acclaimed. He found himself nominated for leading awards and won the Vijay Award for Entertainer of the Year. The film's success saw Suriya emerge as the most profitable leading actor in Tamil films, following a hat trick of large commercial hits. Following Ayan, his next film, K. S. Ravikumar's action entertainer Aadhavan also achieved commercial success, while Suriya's depiction of a hitman was praised. His only 2012 release was the K. V. Anand-directed film Maattrraan in which he played the role of conjoined twins, Vimalan and Akhilan. The film received mixed reviews, and, ended up being an average grosser while Suriya's performance was praised. In January 2012, Suriya was named as the official host of the new game show to be presented on STAR Vijay, Neengalum Vellalam Oru Kodi, the Tamil version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, which began airing on 27 February 2012 and ended on 12 July. His next film was Singam 2, a sequel to his 2010 film Singam, that released on 5 July 2013 to positive response from the public. The film received a huge opening, becoming the highest-grossing Tamil film of the year and emerged as one of the highest-grossing Tamil films of all time, collecting more than 100 crores worldwide. His next film Anjaan directed by N. Lingusamy was released on 15 August 2014 to negative reviews. The film had one of the biggest openings ever in Tamil Cinema and Suriya's best but became a below-average venture at the box office. His next release was Venkat Prabhu's film Masss, which was released to mixed reviews. His only film in 2016 was his home production 24 directed by Vikram Kumar which hit the screens on 6 May 2016. The film, based on the concept of time travel, featured Suriya in triple roles. The film met with unanimous critical acclaim, and became a commercial success, grossing more than 100 crores worldwide. Suriya's performance, especially the character 'Athreya' was much praised. His first release in 2017 was Singam 3, the sequel to his earlier films Singam & Singam 2. The film was released on 9 February 2017 to mostly positive reviews from the public. It had one of the biggest worldwide openings for a Tamil film, and Suriya's biggest yet, and eventually grossed 100 crores worldwide in just 6 days of its release. Suriya's next film in 2017 is with director Vignesh Shivan for Thaanaa Serndha Koottam. Thaana Serndha Kootam was released at the beginning of 2018. In 2019, he partnered with Selvaraghavan for NGK - a political drama that received mixed reviews from the public and critics. His next release was Kaapaan, an action thriller, in which he shared the screen with Arya and Mohanlal. The movie was a commercial success and the final directorial venture of K.V. Anand before the filmmaker's demise on 30th April 2021. 2020 and 2021 marked the years Suriya worked on "Soorarai Pottru" and "Jai Bhim" with Sudha Kongara and T. J. Gnanavel respectively. Both these films were produced by his production banner 2D Entertainment. Soorarai Pottru was praised by the public, critics and film people. The movie went on to bag 5 awards at the 68th National Awards for Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Actor (Suriya), Best Actress and Best Original Score. Jai Bhim was lauded for its craftsmanship and the message it delivered to the society. Jai Bhim was made available for screening at the 96th Academy Awards. In 2022, Suriya had his 1st theatrical release in 3 years with Etharkkum Thunindhavan collaborating with director Pandiraj. The film opened to mixed reviews and went on to be a success at the Box Office. The same year, he stepped into a new character called "Rolex" who appeared as a cameo in Vikram (2022) and this character became a fan favourite in no time. He also did a Cameo in R. Madhavan's, "Rocketry - The Nambi Effect" Suriya is now working on Kanguva directed by Siva and is slated for release in 2024. Suriya has joined hands once again with Sudha Kongara and G V Prakash Kumar for his 43rd movie. The film team released a motion poster revealing only a part of the movie title. Suriya is married to actress Jyothika, with whom he worked with in as many as seven films. The couple, after being together for several years, got married on 11 September 2006. They have two children, a daughter named Diya and a son named Dev. In 2008, Suriya began the Agaram Foundation, working to help children who drop out of school early in Tamil Nadu. Suriya revealed that he was inspired to begin the movement as a result of his father's organisation, Sivakumar Educational Trust, which had been operating similar benefits on a smaller scale since the 1980s. With the Ministry of Education in Tamil Nadu, he created a short commercial video outlining child poverty, labour and lack of education, titled Herova? Zerova?. The film was written and produced by Suriya and also starred Vijay, Madhavan and Jyothika. Agaram sponsored 159 underprivileged students in 2010 for their higher education in various disciplines and has continued to provide free seats and accommodation for pupils. With the firm belief that the educated mind can not only eliminate social evils but also aid in the socio-economic upbringing of society, the Agaram Foundation works towards providing appropriate learning opportunities to the rural populace who do not otherwise have access to quality education. Through the foundation, he has also set up a platform for students to participate in workshops and improve communication skills, teamwork, goal setting and leadership. Suriya and his family have also extended help towards the education of Sri Lankan Tamil children on behalf of the Sivakumar Charitable Trust. He is also an active participant in other humanitarian works such as the "Save The Tigers" campaign, which aids in the protection and preservation of Tigers in India, and "REACH", a non-profit that cures TB patients for free using supervised medication programs. The actor celebrates every birthday by doing charity work across Tamil Nadu.

Mark Antony Review: Illogical Time Travel Concept

Mark Antony Review: Illogical Time Travel Concept

Movie: Mark Antony Rating: 2/5 Banner: Mini Studio Cast: Vishal, S.J.Suryah, Suneel, Selvaraghavan, Ritu Varma, Abhinaya, Kingsley, Y.G.Mahendran and others Music: G.V.Prakash Kumar DOP: Abinandhan Ramanujam Editor: Vijay Velukutty Art Director: R.K.Vijaimurugan Producer: S.Vinod Kumar Written and Directed by: Adhik Ravichandran Release Date: Sep 15, 2023

Vishal and SJ Suryah's dual roles, as well as the trailer for "Mark Antony," raised some expectations for this film.

Let’s find out its merits and demerits.

Story: Set in 1995. Mark (Vishal), a mechanic, believes that his father, Antony (Vishal), a ruthless gangster, murdered his mother. Jackie Marthand (SJ Suryah), his father's friend, raises him, and Mark begins to regard Jackie as a father figure.

Jackie, like Antony, has a son named Madan (SJ Surya). Madan also likes Mark’s girlfriend Ramya (Ritu Varma).

When Ramya asks Mark to repair her father’s car, he discovers a box inside. The box has a telephone, invented by a scientist Chiranjeevi (Selva Raghavan), which can connect to people from the past.

The rest of the story is about how this phone changes Mark's life and how he learns the truth about his mother's murder.

Artistes’ Performances: Vishal and SJ Suryah not only get to play dual roles, but they also appear in a retro style. While Vishal exhibits both negative and positive aspects of a role, his role as Antony is more colorful and interesting.

SJ Suryah, who was riveting in the recent time travel film "Manaadu," gets to play yet another eccentric villain. Surya's performance as both father and son steals the show. His portrayal of Jackie is superb.

Suneel is adequate in the role of Ekambaram. Ritu Varma’s role is more like a junior artist. Abhinaya asserts her presence.

Technical Excellence: The film boasts top notch production values. The production design and the background score by GV Prakash Kumar stand out

Highlights: Interval bang SJ Surya’s performance

Drawback: Silly proceedings Logic goes for a toss Over the top sequences

Analysis 'Mark Antony' stars Vishal and SJ Suryah in dual roles and is set in the science fiction genre. On the surface, the concept appears to be interesting. However, the fantasy film based on the time travel concept is taken to an extreme level, making it frustrating to watch after a point.

The film is entertaining towards the end of the first half, with the interval bang setting the real base. But the proceedings are no way convincing as everything happens as per the convenience of the screenplay.

Several rules and functions of the time-travel phone are revealed at the beginning of the film, but they keep changing.

Vishal appears as a villain in the beginning, and SJ Suryah appears as a good-natured gangster. Their true natures are revealed by the interval. Hence, we get to see Vishal in both negative and positive roles, as well as SJ Suryah as both a good guy and a menacing villain. Although the film's outlandish concept allows both of these actors to shine, with Surya in particular having the opportunity to steal the entire show, it is not engaging enough.

Even the episode with the Silk Smitha lookalike doesn't work very well. Though some lines here and there provide laughs.

The time-travel element, a couple of humorous episodes, and the setting are all highlights, but the story's wackiness and the erratic narration detract from the film's impact. Concise narration would have helped.

On the whole, "Mark Antony" is quite whacky and makes no sense. Despite its best efforts to offer something new to the time travel genre, the lengthy drama makes a tiresome watch.

Bottom line: Whacky

First Look at Jessica Alba's Netflix Thriller Trigger Warning

In addition to the synopsis and first-look images, Jessica Alba and director Mouly Surya provide insight into their upcoming action thriller.

  • Jessica Alba and director Mouly Surya discuss their upcoming action thriller, Trigger Warning.
  • Alba expresses her admiration for strong, femal characters like Ripley from the Alien franchise and Sarah Connor of Terminator fame.
  • Surya found it a "little surreal" working with Alba, at first, praising the actress' fiery personality and straightforwardness on set.

It’s been over 20 years since Jessica Alba first suited up as the genetically enhanced Max Guevara on television's science fiction drama Dark Angel . And while the Golden Globe-nominee admittedly hasn’t done a ton of choreographed fight sequences since, the actress is ready for the challenge in her upcoming Netflix project, Trigger Warning . However, the action thriller did test its star's mettle when it comes to pulling off those larger-than-life on-screen brawls. Alba said in an interview with Tudum :

I haven’t really done hand-to-hand combat and intense action in such a long time. For me, I really wanted it to be a more intimate kind of fighting experience if I needed to take somebody out.

Check out the four brand-new images (below) along with the synopsis for Trigger Warning:

“Special Forces commando Parker (Jessica Alba) is on active duty overseas when she gets called back to her hometown with the tragic news that her father has suddenly died. Now the owner of the family bar, Parker reconnects with her former boyfriend turned sheriff Jesse (Mark Webber), his hot-tempered brother Elvis (Jake Weary), and their powerful father, Senator Swann (Anthony Michael Hall), as she looks to understand what actually happened to her dad…” Parker’s search for answers quickly goes south, and she soon finds herself at odds with a violent gang running rampant in her hometown. Unsure of who she can truly trust, Parker draws on her commando training and proves herself a force to be reckoned with as she hunts down the truth and attempts to right what has gone wrong in Swann County, with the help of her covert ops partner and hacker Spider (Tone Bell) and connected local dealer Mike (Gabriel Basso).”

Trigger Warning is directed by Mouly Surya. John Brancato, Josh Olson and Halley Gross are credited with writing the action thriller’s screenplay, while Erica Lee, Basil Iwanyk and Esther Hornstein serve as producers on the project.

First-Look Images, Jessica Alba Reveals Admiration for Ripley & Sarah Connor

Following her time on the TV show Dark Angel , Jessica Alba made a number of her best movies, including Into the Blue, Fantastic Four and Honey . And while the actress hasn’t played a physical role quite like the one she portrays in Netflix’s Trigger Warning for quite some time, Alba is a huge fan of powerful, female characters — not unlike Dark Angel’s protagonist, Max. Alba said in the same discussion with Tudum:

I loved Luc Besson’s La Femme Nikita. I also loved Ripley [Alien franchise], and I love Sarah Connor in Terminator.

Jessica Alba Says Marvel Films Are 'Still Quite Caucasian'

In the summer of 2021, Alba revealed that she was about to begin filming Netflix’s Trigger Warning . So, it's taken nearly three years for the action thriller to come to fruition. And for director Mouly Surya, meeting Alba for the very first time turned out to be a “little surreal.” Surya told Tudum:

“It was a little surreal. We talked for an hour or so, and it was totally unexpected talking with your teenage idol basically out of nowhere. At first, I didn’t know how to act around her. But then slowly you start to see actors as [people]. Jessica is very fiery, and also she’s straight up. She will tell you exactly what she thinks, and I love that about her.”

Alba also serves as an executive producer on the project. Jeanette Volturno, Jason Clark, Jonathan Fuhrman, Daniel Jason Heffner, John Brancato and Josh Olson are also EPs for the film. Trigger Warning co-stars Anthony Michael Hall, Mark Webber, Tone Bell, Jake Weary and Gabriel Basso.

Jessica Alba’s Trigger Warning drops Friday, June 21 on Netflix.

Book Review

The Ministry of Time

By Kaliane Bradley Avid Reader Press: 352 pages, $28.99 If you buy books linked on our site, The Times may earn a commission from Bookshop.org , whose fees support independent bookstores.

“People aren’t history,” scoffs Adela, vice secretary of the Ministry, whose work is shrouded in secrecy and subterfuge. This retort comes late in Kaliane Bradley’s debut novel, “The Ministry of Time,” but it’s a telling line. Its dismissal of individual lives reveals the novel’s stakes. If people aren’t history, what is? This is a disturbing statement to come out of the mouth of a high-ranking British bureaucrat. For a book that could also be easily described as witty, sexy escapist fiction, “The Ministry of Time” packs a substantial punch.

Of late, many critically acclaimed books embrace mystery and absurdity in a way that both suspends and expands conventionally held notions of time. Hilary Leichter’s “Terrace Story,” National Book Critics Circle award winner Lorrie Moore’s “I Am Not Homeless If This Is Not My Home,” Ali Smith’s “Companion Piece,” National Book Award winner Justin Torres’ “Blackouts,” and Marie-Helene Bertino’s “Beautyland,” among others, forge poignant, bracing emotional connections. Their playfulness reveals possibilities and perspectives that might be lost in a novel bound by fact-checked 21st century reality. After all, in a world where nothing feels normal, fiction that embraces a disregard for physics and convention mirrors our new upside-down quotidian life.

The Ministry of Time cover with the title in 3-D in many colors against a dark background

To this end, Kaliane Bradley proves that it’s possible to address imperialism, the scourge of bureaucracy, cross-cultural conflict and the paranoia inherent in a surveillance state through her utterly entertaining novel. “The Ministry of Time” begins with a sixth-round job interview for an undisclosed position. The unnamed narrator is caught off guard when “the interviewer said my name, which made my thoughts clip. I don’t say my name, not even in my head. She’d said it correctly, which people generally don’t.” For the narrator, who “plateaued” as a “translator-consultant” in the Languages department of the Ministry of Defense, this top-secret job that pays three times her current salary is worth the mystery.

Soon the work is disclosed. The narrator, whose mother immigrated to the United Kingdom from Cambodia, will be working closely with people who might bristle at the term “refugees.” She’s now part of the Ministry of Expatriation working with one of five “expats” scavenged from the past. Confident in her storytelling, Bradley sweeps away the details of how and why time travel exists in the novel.

Rachel Khong

A disorienting, masterful, shape-shifting novel about multiracial identity

Rachel Khong’s irresistible puzzle of a second novel suggests it is a mistake to think we can force complex, nature-nurture identities in a chosen direction.

April 22, 2024

“All you need to know is that in your near future, the British government developed the means to travel through time but had not yet experimented with doing it.” With that, from the jump, readers and characters alike are asked to take a leap of faith as the narrator assumes the role of a “bridge” between an “expat” and modern life. The larger purpose of her work is elusive to her as well, but, in short, the narrator is tasked to be the roommate of an explorer named Commander Graham Gore who died on a doomed Royal Navy Arctic exhibition in 1847. He’s mannered, understandably jumpy, but also rather sexy for someone who died close to 200 years ago. Will this be an odd sort of meet-cute, or is something more chaotic afoot?

Buckle up, the ride has just begun. Juggling notions of “hereness” (the present) and “thereness” (the past), the novel’s five expats come to grips — or not — with the fact that they have been snatched from the past. The ministry selected individuals who were on the point of death so that their departures from the past would in no way rupture their historic timelines. But how would they affect the present? The bridges take notes, and medical examinations are de rigueur, but these collected data are merely passed along without much in the way of analysis.

The expats and bridges adjust to life together in a largely amusing fashion, sharing lovely homes provided by the ministry, visiting pubs, learning about the very existence of cinema. Music streaming services are a hit, but, generally speaking, the expats find it hard to accept the scale of modern life. Whether this is due to some physical mutation created by the process of time travel or if it’s merely the challenge of cultural displacement for people “loose as dust in narrative time,” true fissures begin to surface.

How many lives can one author live? In new short stories, Amor Towles invites us along for the ride

In a manner that feels wholly unsurprising to the reader, suspicions arise as to the nature of the project. Why exactly is there a need for secrecy and what are the particulars about this ability to time travel that we’re asked to tacitly accept? Tensions also flare between the narrator and another bridge, Simellia, who are the two people of color in this tightly knit circle. The specter of imperialism looms and informs a certain tension between the narrator and Gore. Yet, as a green bureaucrat, happy to rise in the ranks, she confronts Simellia, saying, “You signed up for this job… [knowing], as much as I did, that what we were doing was world-changing. That’s what you wanted, remember? Do you think the world changes by being asked politely? Or do you think there has to be risk?”

But this brash confidence begins to waver. The narrator recognizes, “Every time I gave Graham a book, I was trying to shunt him along a story I’d been telling myself all my life.” Then she notes that the ministry “fed us all poison from a bottle marked ‘prestige’ and we developed a high tolerance for bitterness.” While the book does assume some obvious postures of university level post-colonial theory and language, it moves past these more cliched moments by focusing its attention on the characters. A tight narrative rich with witty banter, cutting observations and interspersed passages from Gore’s doomed expedition also keep the novel taut.

“Maybe I was tired of stories, telling them and hearing them,” muses the narrator. Curiously, while she made languages her profession (hence her tendency to consider that “the great project of Empire was to categorize: owned and owner, coloniser and colonised, evolué and barbarian, mine and yours.”), her antagonistic younger sister became a writer. Finding herself falling in love with Gore, the narrator becomes the story, upending history.

As the story’s momentum builds into that of a spy thriller, Bradley pulls off a rare feat. “The Ministry of Time” is a novel that doesn’t stoop to easy answers and doesn’t devolve into polemic. It’s a smart, gripping work that’s also a feast for the senses. An assassination, moles, questions of identity and violence wreak havoc on our happy lovers and the bubble they create in London. Yet our affection for them is as fresh and thrilling as theirs is for one another, two explorers of a kind, caught in a brilliant discovery. Bradley’s written an edgy, playful and provocative book that’s likely to be the most thought-provoking romance novel of the summer. Check your history: That’s no small feat.
