The Top Things to Do and See in Syros, Greece

Ermoupoli is the cultural heart of Syros

Syros, Greece , is a well-kept secret in the Cyclades, but it’s not for the lack of historical sites, beautiful beaches and traditional tavernas on offer. From the Agios Stefanos to prehistoric settlements, here are the top attractions on this enchanting Greek island.

The Cycladic island of Syros is for travellers who want all that a Greek holiday has to offer without the crowds and noise. There is plenty to see and do here, including historical and cultural activities for the whole family, hikes and secluded beaches for adventurous travellers, and archaeological wonders that you expect when visiting the Greek islands. It’s a relaxing place to explore, with spectacular landscapes everywhere you look.

1. Agios Stefanos

Architectural Landmark, Historical Landmark

Sunset at the cave of Agios Stefanos, near Galissas town in Syros island, Cyclades, Greece, Europe.

The Agios Stefanos is not your typical chapel. It was built among the rocks inside a cave in Galissas, southwest Syros. According to legend, it was created by a fisherman who prayed to Saint Stefanos to save him when a giant octopus attacked. The chapel is accessible by a small footpath or by boat and offers incredible views of the sea. Pilgrims come to the chapel twice a year – 19 August and 26 December – to honour Saint Stefanos.

Archaeological site

In northeast Syros, at the very top of a hill, is the prehistoric settlement of Kastri. The fortified archaeological site dates back more than 5,000 years, while the surrounding area of Chalandriani has one of the earliest Cycladic cemeteries. The area is surprisingly well preserved and worth exploring. There are two paths to the top, both difficult, but they’re worth hiking to get to see the incredible views of the Cyclades.

3. Ano Meria

Natural Feature

Meaning “the upper part”, Ano Meria is an area of rough, once-barren terrain in the northern part of Syros that has been landscaped in an attempt to beautify it. Its ruggedness makes it less visited than other areas on the island – perfect for a calm and quiet escape. The scent of wildflowers and herbs wafts through the air as you drive through the winding mountain roads, while the gorgeous landscape, secluded beaches and views along hiking paths will catch your eye. Dine in the small tavernas along your route for the best traditional food.

4. Ermoupoli

View to the Neo Classic Greek Orthodox Church of Saint Nicholas at the background, Ermoupolis, Syros, Cyclades Islands, Greek Islands, Greece ,

Once the shipping capital of Greece, Ermoupoli still has an amazing seaside experience, and if you come to Syros by ferry, you will land here. The aristocratic past of the city is still evident in its neoclassical architecture dotted along the coast. Today, Ermoupoli is the cultural centre of Syros, with many scheduled events throughout the year. Visit the Apollo Theater for an opera, or stroll through the Archaeological Museum of Syros. Alternatively, do as the local people do and people-watch in Miaouli Square.

5. Gria Cave

Gria Cave is on Americanou Beach. It’s a short hike from Kambos or accessible by boat from Kini. The area around the beach was transformed by the American economist John Pearson, who made it his life’s mission to plant trees on the northern part of the island to create a lush environment. The trees provide lots of shade for a relaxed all-day visit to the beach. However, pack snacks and water, as it lacks amenities.

6. Agia Pakou

Professional and amateur photographers flock to Agia Pakou, a chapel up the hill from Galissas Beach. It’s one of the best spots on the island to watch the sunset. It’s a small hike to the top, but the unspoilt views are worth the climb. The church itself is lovely and picturesque and houses beautiful icons. If you’re spending the day at the beach below, visit this gem.

7. Villa Tsiropina

Beautiful mansion at Posidonia (Dellagrazia) village, Syros island, Cyclades, Aegean sea, Greece.

You can see the historical wealth and importance of Syros on a visit to Villa Tsiropina. Businessman Konstantinos Tsiropinas built it in the early 20th century, and it has functioned as a residence, an exhibition hall and a theatre over the years. Now it’s the City Hall of Poseidonia, but it still welcomes guests to visit and tour the building. In addition, there are often public events and cultural activities scheduled in the mansion halls or the fragrant gardens.

8. Paralia Kini

Paralia Kini has all the amenities you need to spend an entire day at the beach. It has calm, pristine waters and a long stretch of soft golden sand with umbrellas and sunbeds provided by the local tavernas and cafes. Be sure to check out the statue Panagia Gorgona, which was sculpted based on the legend that a mermaid saved a fisherman’s life and swam him to shore. Then, stay into the evening for the incredible sunset views.

Syros Island: 14 Best Things to Do in 2024

Syros Island is one of the most beautiful Greek islands and certainly one of my favorite ones. Situated south of Andros , west of Mykonos, and north of Sifnos , Paros , and Naxos is no wonder why it is the capital island of the Cyclades.

Syros island is known for its culture and the variety of past civilizations, with impressive monuments, waiting to be discovered all over the island. A unique characteristic of Syros is that Greek Orthodox and Catholic churches are scattered all over the island in a very harmonious co-existence.

The Island is also full of natural attractions, beautiful beaches, and low mountains offering superb vistas, with an invisible line separating the island into two main parts:

Beautiful Galisasbay with a large palm tree in Syros island Greece.

The northern part of Syros, known as Apano Meria, with limestone rock, is mostly very quiet with traditional small villages, imposing rugged terrain, and sea views, ideal for people who love seclusion, hiking, and tranquility.

Traditional alleys in Syros Island Greece.

The south part of the island , covered by volcanic rocks, is mostly flat and this is where most of the villages and the most famous beaches of the island are. The settlements there are developed for tourism, while the road network is quite good.

Up next I am going to tell you about 14 of the best things to do on Syros Island.

The Best Things to Do on Syros Island

How long should you stay in Syros? If you’re short on time or just want a quick taste of the island, 1-2 days can be enough to explore the main highlights of Ermoupolis, the capital, and perhaps visit a nearby beach.

3-5 days: This is a good amount of time to get a more comprehensive experience of Syros. You can explore Ermoupolis, and Ano Syros, visit several beaches, and participate in some activities like hiking or water sports.

1. Explore Elegant Ermoupolis

Ermoupolis town with many colorful houses in a sunny day in Syros Island Greece.

Ermoupolis is a town full of historical and impressive buildings, a unique Chora in the whole of the Cyclades. Stroll the main square of Ermoupolis, Miaouli sq. with the imposing City Hall built in 1863 by the famous architect Schiller, a popular meeting place for both tourists and locals. The majestic stairs of the large city hall attract a lot of Instagram photographs.

Best things to do in Syros Greece, Ermoupolis city Hall in Syros Island Greece.

Inside the City Hall, you can visit the Archaeological Museum of Syros Greece with Cycladic and Byzantine exhibits (open 9-4, closed on Tuesdays & Thursdays).

Ermoupolis has a great vibe, and the food is top-notch, there is so much choice for every taste, and relatively inexpensive compared to other islands.

Best things to do in Syros Greece, Tavern Petrino in Syros Island Greece.

Stroll by the Apollo Theatre , built in 1864, reminds me of La Scala in Milan in sublime Venetian decoration. If you are visiting Syros in August don’t miss the International Cycladic Classical Music Festival with a series of five unique concerts at the iconic Apollo Theatre.

Go to Vaporia, the coastal side and the poshest area of Ermoupolis, famous for its unique high-ceilinged mansions with impressive murals, wood-carved doors, marble balconies, and wooden floors.

Best things to do in Syros Greece, Vaporia area and Agios Nikolaos Orthodox Church

Nearby is Asteria, a nice beach, and the church of Agios Nikolaos that dominates the Vaporia area with the towering bell towers. And if you feel like gambling, there is a Casino in the Ermoupolis port!

2. Have a Cocktail at Asteria Beach Bar

Best things to do in Syros Greece, Vaporia and the Asteria beach bar

One of the best things to do in Vaporia is to have a cocktail or grab a bite at the Asteria Beach Bar (suggested by Guardian). It is a modest place with magnificent views of the sea and the mansions.

3. Walk up to Ano Syros and the Capuchin Monastery

Best things to do in Syros Greece, Picturesuqe Ano Syros

Ano Syros (the upper part of Ermoupolis) was founded in 1200 AD by the Venetians to protect the inhabitants from the pirates. To make things even more difficult for the pirates, they made narrow cobblestone streets with countless steps that pass by charming whitewashed houses and arches to get to the top.

When you finally reach the top – well done, you are in good physical condition! – visit the impressive Monastery of Capuchin in Ano Syros ,  founded in 1653 by King Louis XIII of France. In its basement, some crypts were used as shelters during pirate raids. There are no monks there today.

4. Visit the 12th-century Catholic Church of Saint George

Best things to do in Syros Greece, Saint George church Complex,

The Catholic Church of Saint George in Ano Syros, a three-aisled Basilica with marble columns, is built on the highest point of the hill in 1200 CE. It is a large complex of buildings such as the Bell Tower,  the historical archive building,  and the Episcopal Palace.

5. Photograph the Syros Greece Cats

Best things to do in Syros Greece, Syros cat cafe

Like most Greek islands, Syros has also its share of stray cats being well looked after by the cat NGOs on the island and the vets supporting neutering programs.

There is a Syros Cat Garden, where neutered cats hang out, or get fed by the local volunteers. Looking for accommodation in Syros? Check out here for rates and availability!

6. Dive into Galissas Beach and Hike to the Hidden Chapel in a Cave

Best things to do in Syros Greece, Galisas beach

Galissas is a beautiful sandy bay between two low hills on the southwestern part of Syros with a couple of great restaurants by the beach. The beach is organized with sunbeds and umbrellas but has also trees if you prefer the more natural shade.

On the left side of Galissas Beach sits the tiny Catholic chapel of Saint Pakou, offering beautiful sea views.

syros culture trip

Hike from Galisas (or go there by boat) for about 2 km to the north and find the little Catholic chapel of Agios Stefanos built inside a cave overlooking the bay. Follow the signs to get to the unique chapel and take some of the best photos on Syros Island.

7. Drive to Megas Gialos Beach

Megas Gialos is one of the best beaches in Syros Greece. It is a large sandy beach with shallow and warm waters and plenty of sunbeds and shades, ideal for families. That means it is a popular beach with taverns and cafes around to choose from.

It is 12 km from Ermoupolis towards the south and to get there you pass by some villages and beaches that you can explore on your way to Megas Gialos. If you would like a more secluded beach, walk to the nearby Chapel of Agios Antonios, and right behind it, a trail leads to the quiet beach of Ampela.

8. Watch the Best Syros Sunset in Kini

Best things to do in Syros Greece, Sunset in Kini with a yacht

Kini village is 10 km east of Ermoupolis and offers the best sunset on Syros Island. The sandy beach is mostly organized with sunbeds and umbrellas but there are also free areas with trees if you prefer quiet time on the beach.

Best things to do in Syros Greece, Kini village

I discovered one of the best accommodations, Anemos and Almyra , a beautiful traditional settlement in Kini Village. Kini Beach has also an interesting aquarium, with live fish and tools in a display used traditionally by the local fishermen.

9. Explore the Mansion of Count Diakakis on Komito beach

Best things to do in Syros Greece, Komito beach

Drive southeast to the beautiful fine golden sand Komito Beach located across two islets and explore the abandoned but amazing Mansion of Cοunt Diakakis.

10. Take a Cooking Class on traditional Syros Greece Cuisine

syros culture trip

My favorite way to explore a new place is to taste their local goodies and what is better than experiencing the essence of Greece with an exclusive Private Cooking Class on Syros?

Immerse yourself in the authentic Greek dining culture and learn how to craft a full Greek meal from scratch. Then, feast in a charming courtyard, surrounded by the flavors and warmth of Greece. Join this amazing cooking class for an unforgettable culinary journey!

11. Hike Apano (Ano) Meria

Best things to do in Syros Greece, Hike Apano meria, Megas Lakos beach

Syros has low mountains and low vegetation in general with its highest peak being Pyrgos, at 442 meters. From the hillsides of Ano Syros, the neighboring islands of Tinos, Mykonos, and Delos can be seen.

Syros features 10 signposted trails marked by the local authorities as ’Paths of high cultural interest’. There are several more unmarked and equally beautiful to explore with the most demanding being the trail to the gorge of Schizomenes .

Best things to do in Syros Greece, ragged Diapori area

Another demanding but stunningly beautiful trail is on the northwest of Syros, where the terrain is rugged and barren at the Diapori area close to the north Syros Lighthouse.

12. Visit the beautiful remote village of Ai Michalis

Best things to do in Syros Greece, windmill

Go to the small traditional village of Ai Michalis with imposing vistas and have lunch in one of the taverns for really traditional Greek food.

13. Hike to the Early Bronze Age Settlements

Best things to do in Syros Greece, Ancient Cemetery of Chalandriani

Syros island has many ruins from the Cycladic Civilization – a Bronze Age culture (c. 3200–c. 1050 BC). Excavations have revealed the remains of fortified settlements in Kastri dating circa 2300-2200 BC and a cemetery in Chalandriani.

More than 600 tombs have been excavated dated between 2700-2400 BC all belonging to the Cycladic Civilization.

The two settlements are linked with a long and rough trail that is easy to find and is marked with red spray paint including arrows. If you wake up early you will watch the most stunning sunrise of your life.

**Other ancient sites in Syros include:

  • Ermoupolis: remains of an ancient wall and a theater north of the citadel at the hill where the Church Panagia Theotokos is
  • Vari: Roman tombs and ruins of a prehistoric settlement (4000-3000 BC)

14. Taste Syros Local Delicacies

Ancient Cemetery of Chalandriani, Greek coffee and loukoumi

Syros offers a diverse culinary experience, showcasing fresh seafood, local cheeses, and traditional Greek dishes. Don’t miss the opportunity to try Syros’ unique delicacies like

The most famous of the island’s local tastes is  loukoumi  — essentially the Greek version of Turkish delight and white-round scented nougat. They can be found in every bakery and pastry shop in Syros but also at the Greek coffee shops (Kafenio) served with Greek coffee.

Other local delicacies that you can taste on the island – in taverns or groceries are:

Halvadopita, kaparosalata (capers salad), ladopita (olive oil pie), louza (cured pork) , and local cheeses: San Michali, sweet gruyere,   haloumi and spicy Kopanisti .

Where to Stay in Syros Greece

Choosing where to stay in Syros depends on your priorities and preferences. Here’s a breakdown of the different areas to consider:

The capital of Syros, Ermoupolis, is a vibrant town with a rich history and culture. It’s a great choice if you want to be in the heart of the action, close to shops, restaurants, and nightlife. However, it can be more crowded and noisy than other parts of the island.

Best things to do in Syros Greece, Anemos and Almyra hotel. A traditional room with view to the sea. In Syros Island Greece.

Syros Soul Luxury Suites ( family-friendly ) have a stunning location, right across from Syros main square, with beautifully decorated spacious rooms and a fantastic breakfast.

I loved Guesthouse Lila ( mid-range, family-friendly ) a beautifully decorated traditional guesthouse, very quiet but also very central in Ermoupolis.

syros culture trip

This charming hilltop village offers stunning views of the island and the Aegean Sea. However, it’s important to note that there are fewer amenities and restaurants in Ano Syros compared to Ermoupolis and it is a killer for knees as it needs a lot of hiking up and down.

Elia Concept Apartments ( self-catering, mid-range, family-friendly ) is a lovely, well-equipped, unique traditional house with an indoor staircase and a magnificent view of Ermoupolis from the terrace!

Beach Resorts

syros culture trip

Syros has several beach resorts, each with its unique character. Galissas is a popular choice for families, with a long sandy beach and shallow waters. Kini is another family-friendly option, offering a relaxed atmosphere and beautiful scenery.

Hotel Benois (mid-range, family-friendly, breakfast) in Galissas offers an outdoor pool, just 164 feet away from the sandy beach of Galissas with bright, spacious rooms.

Anemos and Almyra ( budget, family-friendly ) in Kini, in eastern Syros, is one of the most authentic and traditional hotels (it reminded me of my grandmother’s summer house) close to nature on the island.

Getting around Syros

There are public buses that will take you to beaches in Syros, starting from Ermoupolis but I recommend  renting a car  and driving around the island. I loved having the freedom to find hidden sites and stay as long as I wanted wherever I wanted.

How to Get to Syros Island

You can fly to Syros from Athens International Airport. The Airport Dimitrios Vikelas of Syros is only three km from Ermoupolis, with a daily connection to Athens.

Syros is well connected by ferries from Athens’ main port, Piraeus (the fastest ferry takes about 2,5 hours to reach Syros), or from the smaller Athens port of Lavrion.

Book your ferry transfer with FerryScanner to secure your seat, especially if you travel during the summer.

What to Wear in Syros

This depends on the season you are visiting but anytime between May and October, essential things to have in Greece are:

  • comfortable walking shoes as Greece is mountainous and archaeological sites with their marble floors can be slippery
  • organic sunscreen to apply as often as possible
  • UPF sun hat for all day out
  • white linen shirt to cover up if you get very easily sunburned. I wear a linen shirt when I hike in Greece during the summer
  • a CUPSHE Bikini for impressive beach appearances
  • cotton beach towe l
  • and a beautiful dress for dining out on Greek islands

When is Best to Go to Syros

Pink Flowers and bougainvillea on a GReek island

Syros island has been one of the most important industrial centers of the new Greek state – after the War of Independence in 1821 – and has still a thriving economy. That makes it a 4-seasons island as it is busy all year round with frequent ferry transfers.

If you are interested in summer vacation, then June to October in Syros will be quite warm. July and August are the busiest, hottest, and windiest months for the Cyclades.

A great time to go to Syros is on Easter, with magnificent Greek Orthodox and Catholic celebrations in April. The sea waters will be cold to swim in but hiking will be at its best as the island will be covered in wildflowers and the weather is simply perfect.

Easter in the Cyclades is very popular among Greeks so you better check for availability early on Booking.com .

Is Syros a good island for families?

Syros is a family-friendly island with several beaches suitable for young children, like Galissas and Kini. It also offers various family-oriented activities, including boat trips, water sports, and cultural exploration.

What is the nightlife like in Syros?

Ermoupolis offers the most vibrant nightlife on the island, with bars, clubs, and live music venues catering to various tastes. Other villages like Vari and Kini also have lively bars and restaurants, especially during peak season.

How expensive is Syros compared to other Greek islands?

Syros is generally considered slightly more expensive than some other Cycladic islands. However, compared to Santorini or Mykonos, it offers a more affordable option while still providing a charming and authentic Greek experience.

Guide To Syros Island

Syros is a small but prosperous Cycladic Island, the capital of  the Cyclades. A relatively recent touristic development makes it entirely off the beaten track and relatively free from mass tourism. It’s a perfect place for a tranquil holiday and ideal for enjoying  pristine, empty beaches , traditional villages, excellent gastronomy, and local music.

Syros Island is famous for its excellent restaurants, its rebetika music, and some delicious sweets such as loukoumi (Turkish Delight), mandolata (nougat), and halvadopita (a softer kind of nougat).

Ermoupolis, the capital of Syros, shines with a myriad of neoclassical mansions of exquisite taste and elegance, beautiful churches, and romantic alleys . The city is also close to some of the most amazing Syros beaches, most of them concentrated on the southern and western coasts.

Finally, a great trait to remember when deciding which Greek Islands to visit is that Syros is straightforward to reach from Athens and other islands, such as Mykonos or Santorini . This makes Syros a convenient destination to add to your island-hopping itinerary.

Now, our Syros travel guide below will tell you everything you need to know to plan a perfect holiday in Syros!

How To Get To Syros Greece

Lesser-Known Greek Islands - Syros

Since the island is the capital of the Cycladic cluster , there are different ways to travel to Syros.

How To Reach Syros By Plane

The island is connected to Athens all year long, with more than five flights managed by Olympic Airways every week. During summer, there are also seasonal flights from Thessaloniki .

The airport is located a few minutes from the center of Ermoupolis (only two kilometers), and it’s necessary to hire a taxi to reach the center of town since no bus service is available from the airport at the time of writing. The flying time from Athens to Syros is about 30 minutes.

Find affordable flight options here.

How to travel to syros by ferry.

Ferry travel is the most popular and convenient way to move around when visiting Greece and discovering the islands. You can reach Syros from Athens, either from the port of Lavrio (2-4 ferries weekly, with a 4-hour travel time) or from Greece’s main port, Piraeus (2-3 daily ferries, travel time of 3-4 hours).

Syros is also connected to most Greek Islands via ferry. You can reach Syros from Amorgos, Andros, Astypaleia, Ikaria, Milos , Mykonos, Naxos , Paros, Patmos, Samos, Santorini, Serifos, and other smaller islands too.

Book your ferries in Greece here.

What to do in syros – things to do in syros .

Despite being relatively small compared to other islands in the Aegean, Syros offers plenty of things to do. Plan  a stay of at least four days to see the island in its entirety, visit some of its fantastic beaches, discover its gastronomy and music, and explore traditional villages and its mountainous landscape.

This list below features some of the most unforgettable things to do and see in Syros for a fantastic vacation on the beautiful Greek island of Syros.

Discover The Gorgeous Architecture In Ermoupolis

Syros Island Greece_Ermoupoli town

Arguably, it is one of the most attractive cities in the Cyclades, and the capital of Syros deserves at least a short visit to discover the island . Home to some of the most unique architecture in Greece , Ermoupolis takes pride in its imposing neoclassical buildings.

Many of these mansions stand along the seaside promenade, next to bars and cafeterias, as a memory of when the island of Syros was one of the most important ports in Greece.

The city is divided into two distinct areas: the lower town, with an Orthodox tradition, and the upper Ermoupolis, home to most Catholics.

Wander Around Miaouli Square

Known in Greek as Platia Miaouli, this central square is located in an exquisite pedestrian area covered in colorful bougainvillea and palm trees. Here, visitors can discover some of the best cuisines on the island and fantastic cafeterias to have a late brunch or a cocktail after dinner.

Here, it’s also possible to visit the Archaeological Museum of Syros, which features objects coming from the island and Paros and Amorgos.

Check The Orthodox Quarter

Once you’ve visited the square, take the steps along Benaki Street and reach Vrondado Hill, the place hosting the Orthodox quarter of Ermoupolis. In this area, don’t miss a visit to the Church of the Resurrection (Anastasis), offering a breathtaking panorama of the neighboring islands of Mykonos and Naxos from the top of its dome.

If you are interested in the churches on the island, not far from Miaouli Square, pay a visit to the Church of the Resurrection, which houses a holy icon of the Virgin, made by the famous painter El Greco during his young years.

Explore Vaporia

Dome of the Cathedral of Saint Nicholas, Ermoupolis Greece

Probably the most beautiful neighborhood in Ermoupolis, Vaporia used to be the quarter where the wealthiest merchants and shipowners on the island built their stunning mansions.

Located close to the port, the area’s splendor is highlighted by the paved alleys with arches and neoclassical buildings with marble details, paintings, and frescoes. Opposite the site, you can also visit the church of Saint Nikolas, the patron saint of Ermoupolis.

Admire The City From Ano Syros

Not far from Miaouli Square, you will find the highest hill in Ermoupolis, home to the medieval quarter of Ano Syros (Upper Syros). Get lost walking along the magical alleys of the area, which host several Catholic churches. Don’t miss the beautiful Saint George Cathedral or the Capuchin Monastery of Saint John, dating back to 1535.

Also, in Ano Syros, it’s a good idea to visit the Markos Vamvarakis Museum. Vamvarakis was one of the most crucial rebetika musicians in Greece. Rembetika, also known as the urban blues of Greece, is an underground music style that flourished during the twentieth century as a combination of traditions and expressions of social concern.

Syros is one of the best places to discover more about Rembetika, as it is also where the Festival of Rembetika takes place every year.

Brands We Use And Trust

Check out some of the best beaches in syros.

Several beautiful beaches in Syros are not crowded even during the peak season, which comes with that famously sunny Syros weather.

Galissas Beach

Galissas is the biggest beach on the island . Its pristine sandy shore and shallow waters make it ideal for families.

Since it’s just minutes from Ermoupolis, it’s easy to reach by bus. This makes it popular among visitors.

Fr om Galissas, it’s possible to reach the small naturist beach of Armeos, which is often quite solitary.

Agathopes Beach

The beach features a fantastic, unspoiled nature, with white beach lilies blossoming on the sand. This beautiful shore is a protected area ideal for swimming. There are several diving centers in the area, so it’s possible to experience the magnificent underwater life of Syros.

The beach is well-organized. There are sunbeds, umbrellas, and taverns where you can enjoy a refreshing drink and a traditional lunch. Several hotels and studios are also in the area.

Azolimnos Beach

The tiny and attractive village of Azolimnos is a great place to stay on the island. Located 4 km from Ermoupolis, this small beach is excellent for a calm swim and unforgettable underwater experiences. The beach features crystal clear waters, several diving centers, and fish taverns by the sea.

Several hotels and studios near the beach offer both luxury and budget accommodations. You will be happy to know Azolimnos is connected to Ermoupolis by bus.

Finikas Beach

From Galissas Beach, you can ride the bus south to reach the long and narrow beach of Finikas in about 10 minutes.

The area is well-developed, with bars, cafes, and places to stay. Not far from this shore, you can also reach the nearby beach of Posidonia, also known as Delagrazia Beach.

Megas Gialos Beach

South of Posidonia, the beaches of Megas Gialos and Ambelia are two long beaches with trees offering plenty of natural shade to spend the whole day in total relaxation.

Kids especially love the coast in the area as it’s shallow and safe; besides, it’s possible to rent a boat to discover some unique hidden caves by the sea.

Ahladi Beach

Probably the best family-friendly beach in Syros, it is protected from the typical wind of the Aegean, the Meltemi. Therefore, families with children often seek refuge in the area on windy days.

Located about 7 km west of Ermoupolis, Kini is another family-friendly area in Syros. Here, there are several simple tavernas and restaurants for a quick but tasty Greek lunch. The sandy beach is protected and relatively shallow. You can rent sunbeds and umbrellas or lay down under the several tamarisk trees that grow by the sea.

Discover The Culture Of Syros Greece

The town hall and the archaeological museum.

The Town Hall is located in Ermoupolis, in Miaouli Square. The neoclassical building dates back to 1898 and has clear traits of Bavarian architecture. Its central area is entirely made of marble, while an imposing marble hanging ladder leads to the first floor.

The Town Hall also hosts the Archaeological Museum of Syros, the Court of Law, and other public services, and it is often described as one of the most beautiful Town Halls of Greece .

Taste Local Wines

Don’t miss the opportunity to taste the island’s wines. The small Syros Winery is located in Talanta village, on the way to Galissas Beach. Here, wine lovers can sample the rare Cycladic vineyards blessed by the island’s microclimate: intense sun, northern winds, and sandy terrain.

Shop For Traditional Products

What To Buy In Turkey - Great Turkish Souvenirs To Take Home - Turkisk Delight

There are several art galleries and souvenir shops to visit in Syros. However, some of the most traditional souvenirs you can take home from Syros are the delicious sweets produced on the island. The most famous of all is loukoumi, also known as Turkish Delight.

These delightful candies are known all over Greece, but Syros produces some of the best quality ones. They are handmade gummy sweets traditionally made with almonds, starch, and sugar.

Loukoumi comes in unique flavors, including mastic, rose, and pistachio. Different tour companies in Ermoupolis organize day trips to taste this delicacy and witness the production process. You can also visit a loukoumi factory.

The Casino Of Syros

Try your luck on the island! The Casino of Syros, Greece, opened in 1997 and is one of the few casinos in the Aegean.

The Muses Hall features various board games, including Roulette, Blackjack, Stud Poker, and some slot machines.

Archaeological Site Of Halandriani

It is not huge, but indeed interesting, as this archaeological site was discovered back in 1895.

The main feature is a cemetery from the Early Cycladic period, with graves housing many expensive items that are solidly connected to the island’s marine essence.

Most of these objects can be admired at the Museum of Syros.

Cycladic Art Museum

Also, in Ermoupolis, this museum in Miaouli Square was founded in 1983 and is housed in an impressive two-floored neoclassical mansion designed by an Italian architect.

Minimalistic figurines of Cycladic origin are among the most remarkable objects, some dating back to the 3rd millennium BC.

The museum organizes frequent guided tours for adults and children

Syros Island With Kids

Kids will adore the beaches of Galissas and Kini, walk the streets of Ermoupolis, and explore some of the island’s museums.

In Kini, children can have a great time visiting the small aquarium. Although the place is reasonably small and can be seen in less than an hour, the local aquarium of Kini features various local fish and marine creatures from the Aegean Sea . The aquarium also features a small exhibit area of artifacts found under the sea and an exhibition of divers’ underwater photographs from shipwrecks .

Another activity that kids will enjoy in Syros is horseback riding. The Equestrian Club of Cyclades offers riding lessons, trail riding, pony rides, and other educational activities for adults and children alike.

Boat rides are an excellent opportunity to spend a fun day with kids in Syros. Some rides take you to the unspoiled northern coast of Syros, part of the Natura 2000 program, for families to discover unique beaches with enchanting waters. Most tours depart from Kini Beach.

Syros – An Island Overview

The Greek island of Syros has somehow remained off-the-beaten-track – despite being a short ferry ride from Mykonos and boasting an airport, sandy beaches, and a handsome neoclassical port town.

But this enigmatic island is actually the main hub of the Cyclades . It has a handsome capital adorned with neoclassical buildings and boasting a rich cultural heritage.

Here are the highlights.

  • What’s the vibe like?
  • Where to Stay on Syros

Getting There and Around

Syros – what’s it like.

Collage of photos from Syros.

Syros is a small island with a favourable natural harbour and good strategic position at the crossroads of the Aegean. It was ruled by the Venetians for several centuries from 1204 and then the Ottomans from 1522.

During the Greek War of Independence its status as a neutral safe haven attracted Greek-speaking refugees from around the Aegean. Amongst these were people from Hydra, Chios and Psara – islands famous for shipping, shipbuilding, and trade. These new inhabitants settled down by the port in Ermoupoli and helped turn Syros into a prosperous and prolific island.

All sorts of industries flourished during this period – marine, banking, education, agriculture, and textiles production. Before Piraeaus was Greece’s major port, Ermoupoli held that title. Syros even had its own currency.

The successful ploughed their money back into Ermoupoli, building vast neoclassical mansions and cultural institutes. It still has a strong tradition of culture and the arts.

These days it hasa population of approximately 30,000. But unlike other islands in the Cyclades much of this population is year-round, not seasonal. There’s a significant student population which brings a youthful buzz to the town.

Syros is relatively undisturbed by the modern beach tourism phenomenon and so is a great place to go to experience day-to-day Greek life – or just for a change of pace. It’s an intriguing mix of cosmopolitan and traditional, relatively unchanged over the past few decades compared to, say, Mykonos.

It manages to excel in both high culture and and the simple things (quiet beaches, good food) – perfect if you can only sit on the beach for so long.

Beyond Ermoupoli the landscape is arid and it’s blessed with good beaches, most of which are sandy.

It’s not unvarnished though and the presence of heavy industry is more notable than on the other Cycladic islands.

Agios Nikolaos church in Ermoupoli.

Syros’ capital and main port Ermoupoli is quite different to other ports in the Cyclades. Dominated by neoclassical architecture, it has more in common with Nafplio or even Chania than Mykonos or Santorini.

But it also has a big working and student population. The first thing you notice as you approach on the ferry will be its skyline dominated by two church-topped hills, and second will be the looming dry docks of Neorion shipyard. The streets around the waterfront are chaotic and full of life. Duck into the cobbled backstreets to find a tangle of tavernas before emerging in squares surrounded by grand buildings and cultural riches.

Where to Stay in Ermoupoli

syros culture trip

Most of the island’s accommodation is found in Ermoupoli . It is particularly blessed with some fantastic high-end and boutique hotels. But think grand-dame town glamour rather than the kind of pared-back chic beach hotels you find on other Cycladic islands. The balconies are ornate, the floors are are polished marble and the interiors are sumptuous.

Arguably, the quintessential Syros experience is to stay at at the water’s edge in Vaporia (pictured above), where swimming is possible when conditions are calm.

The best luxury hotels are:

  • Ploes (Vaporia)
  • Apollonion Palace (Vaporia)
  • Electra Syros Boutique Hotel
  • Hotel Hermes
  • Diogenis Hotel
  • Aeolia Boutique Studios
  • Locadiera Pansion

syros culture trip

As Syros has a large year-round population and attracts many visiting Greeks, you can expect a high standard of food in general. Most of the produce is local.

Stop for a coffee at:

  • Ellinikon Bistro
  • The Corner Cafe

Some well-regarded restaurants to put on your list are:

  • Amvix , Italian by the waterfront
  • Ousyra , modern Italian in the backstreets
  • Peri Tinos , modern Greek/seafood by the waterfront
  • Avant Garden , modern Mediterranean near the theatre
  • Mazi , modern Mediterranean near the square

Other highlights are Django for gelato, Laoutari for traditional kafeneion vibes, and Porte Galleria for evening drinks.

You’ll find excellent seafood restaurants in all the coastal villages such as Allou Yialou in Kini.

Don’t forget to pick up a box (or three) of loukoumi , one of Syros’ most famous products. This jelly-like sweet is the Greek version of Turkish Delight and is usually flavoured by rose or mastic.

Another local sweet is halvadopita , a sesame paste sandwiched between two waters. There are plenty of sweet shops in town especially around Maiouli Square .

To stock up on a variety of local produce head to Prekas Delicatessen near the port or Maison du Meze up in Ano Syros .

syros culture trip

Syros’ coastal resorts are small and highly seasonal. The beaches can feel pretty packed in late July and August when Greeks are on their summer vacation.

The villages are all fairly traditional family-friendly beach resorts, each with a beach bar or two aimed at the local student population. But the beach bars are outnumbered by simple tavernas and seafood restaurants.

As most visitors stay in Ermoupoli and the distances are short, the coastal villages can feel a bit dead at night – which is either a plus or a minus depending on what you’re looking for. And outside high season they are fairly quiet in the daytime too.

It’s possible to reach most of the beach villages by regular bus from Ermoupoli.

  • Poseidonia
  • Megas Gialos

If you’re looking to stay by the coast, Kini and Galissas are the main resorts and have the best amenities.

The south coast is more developed. North of Kini the island is wild and undeveloped – take a boat trip to some of the area’s hidden coves which are otherwise inaccessible. You can find boat trips from Kini or Ermoupoli.

Where to stay by the beach

This is not the kind of island you come to for a luxury beach resort, but to savour the simple charms.

Syros’ beach resorts have a traditional appeal and an abundance of good-value traditional guesthouses and rooms (known as domatia ) – search Booking.com for accommodation.

However, if you’re after something at the comfortable end then try:

  • The Good Life Greece
  • Faros Suites & Hotel
  • Di Mare Boutique Hotel & Suites

Best Things to Do on Syros

Outdoor table and chairs in Ano Syros.

Although an uphill walk is unappealing in summer, don’t skip a visit to Ano Syros . This beautiful hilltop village is the original part of Ermoupoli and has a distinctly different feel to the rest of the town, with its whitewashed alleyways and Catholic church.

If you don’t fancy the walk (or only fancy the downhill) then a taxi isn’t far. Ask for Agios Georgios church. The panoramic views are wonderful in the evening and there are some excellent cafes and restaurants.

Back down in Ermoupoli, make the most of the town’s cultural calendar – catch an opera at Apollon Theatre or watch a film at Pallas Cinema . There’s also the Gallery of the Cyclades , the Industrial Museum , and the Archaeological Museum .

Keep an eye out for posters around town – there’s always something new going on.

As well as religious celebrations, Syros also hosts an increasing number of festivals – rebetiko (August), guitar (July), film (July), and a the Ermoupoleia Cultural Festival (September).

KTEL Syros example timetable.

How do you get to Syros?

Syros has a domestic airport (JSY) with regular connections to Athens – see Skyscanner  to compare fares.

Ermoupoli is a major ferry hub with frequent connections to Athens Piraeus as well as the other islands in the Cyclades and the Dodecanese – see Ferryhopper for routes and fares.

The airport is just to the south of Ermoupoli.

Alternatively, you can fly to Mykonos International Airport (JMK) and then ferry to Syros (25-45 minutes) – see Ferryhopper for times and fares.

What’s the best way to get around Syros?

Syros is surprisingly small but this means it’s blissfully easy to get around. The island has a circular bus route with regular buses running in both directions and calling at most of the island’s coastal villages along the way. In the summer there are buses into the evening making it possible to spend a long day at the beach without planning, or to stay by the coast and head into Ermoupoli for a bite to eat. Most of the villages are around 20 minutes from Ermoupoli. It’s also easy to traverse by car or scooter.

The main KTEL bus terminal is on the waterfront, just before the Neorion shipyard.

See KTEL Syros for routes and timetables.

Car rental agencies are based at the airport or near to the KTEL bus terminal.

Insider Today

Tourists flock to the Greek islands of Mykonos and Santorini every summer. But people are finally starting to catch on to the fact that many popular destinations are overpriced and overcrowded.

Luckily, Greece has over 220 inhabited islands to explore — and just a short ferry ride from Mykonos lies Syros.

My grandmother is from the island, and I visit it every year. It's one of the most underrated and luxurious destinations in Greece.

Here are 10 of my favorite things to do on Syros.

Grab a coffee at Belle Époque in Miaouli Square.

syros culture trip

One of Syros' most prominent landmarks is Miaouli Square, located just a few steps away from the harbor in the main city of Ermoupoli.

It's a great place to start exploring the island — people of all ages gather to chat and catch up, kids play, and teens socialize on the steps of the town hall.

I love sitting in one of the many cafés around the plaza, like Belle Époque, and enjoying pastries and Greek coffee while I watch the town go by.

Take a dip at Ciel Syros.

syros culture trip

Ciel Syros is a beach bar located near the picturesque neighborhood of Vaporia. But there's no sand there — you can eat and drink on a promenade over the water and dive directly into the sea.

The water here is a beautiful, deep, clear blue, but there are no shallows, so it's only recommended for strong swimmers.

You may occasionally get sprayed by waves while enjoying your drinks, but the atmosphere is always fun, especially on summer afternoons when there are endless parties with Greek music.

Window shop in the streets of Ano Syros.

syros culture trip

If you can manage all the steps, walking uphill to Ano Syros from Ermoupoli is a treat.

You'll find a lot of craft, jewelry, clothing, and other shops, as well as cute cafés to explore in this part of the island.

Make sure to arrive in the morning or late afternoon as many stores close for a bit around midday.

Get a cocktail at Theosis.

syros culture trip

Theosis Bar is a newer addition to Ano Syros. It's o wned by the same man who operates Kouchico — one of the best cocktail bars in Ermoupoli — and serves carefully curated and crafted drinks.

Instead of tables, people sit around a pedestrianized square on stairs and cushions, making the upscale atmosphere feel more casual and less stuffy.

Catch a show at the Apollon Theater.

syros culture trip

Designed as a miniature version of the La Scala opera house in Milan, Apollon Theater hosts shows and performances on the island.

It's also one of the many reasons Syros is considered an island of the arts. Each year, the venue hosts multiple events, including an international film festival .

Spend the day lounging at Ono Concept beach club.

syros culture trip

Agathopes Beach has always been popular with families and tourists thanks to its clear, shallow water and golden sand.

With the addition of the elegant Ono Concept beach club, which opened a few years ago, beachgoers can tan on luxurious lounge chairs while enjoying food, coffee, and cocktails.

Tour Chatzakis Winery.

syros culture trip

In the northern part of the island, where few tourists (or even locals) venture, there's an amazing winery with a stunning view .

I recommend touring the Chatzakis facility in the evenings. Guests can sample the wines alongside charcuterie and snacks while enjoying a mesmerizing Greek sunset.

Enjoy dinner and a sunset at Allou Yialou.

syros culture trip

Syros has become well known for its gastronomy, and Allou Yialou at Kini Beach is one of the best upscale taverna experiences.

Indulge in classic Greek family-style dining featuring plenty of seafood. You can also catch a stunning sunset here as the restaurant faces west.

Stay at one of many converted neoclassical houses.

syros culture trip

The architecture in the streets of Ermoupoli is more reminiscent of Venice than the other Greek islands .

Syros has always been known as a very aristocratic island, and some of its old, pastel-colored neoclassical houses have been renovated into boutique hotels.

Check out Aristede Hotel, Villa Selena, or Arion for historic and luxurious accommodations with incredible hospitality.

Go to Loukoumia Leivadaras to try one of the island's specialty sweets.

syros culture trip

Syros is famous for its loukoumia, the Greek version of Turkish delight .

The treat is available at many shops across the island, but Loukoumia Leivadaras is one of the most highly rated.

Greece Travel Secrets

Located right in the middle of the Cyclades, the island of Syros is in fact the Capital of the group.

Syros is a stunning beacon of culture and tradition, distinctively blending classic Cycladic charm with a rich historical tapestry.

The island’s capital, Ermoupoli, is a testament to the island’s storied past, featuring beautifully restored neoclassical buildings and narrow marble-paved streets. This city isn’t just the administrative centre; it’s a lively hub of culture and arts, with the magnificent Apollo Theater—an architectural jewel inspired by Milan’s La Scala—taking a place of pride, along with the largest Town Hall in Greece and other magnificent strutures.

As you arrive by ferry you will see the twin hills that Ermoupoli sits across. One topped with a Greek Orthodox Cathedral and the other, Ano Syros the islands medieval Capital, a Catholic one. To this day the islands residents are 50% orthodox and 50% catholic and that in itself is unique in Greece.

The island also has some lovely beaches that are a perfect escape for those seeking tranquillity or a bit of adventure.

Gastronomy on Syros is a big deal and there are many local delights, makers and growers. Loukoumi, a type of Turkish delight, and Halvadopita, a nougat pie, are must-tries for anyone with a sweet tooth, while the fresh seafood and local cheeses offer a taste of the island’s culinary heritage.

Why You Need to Visit Syros

Hermopoulis is the capital and largest town in the Cyclades, an architectural wonder, and a shopping hub for locals. Just above Ermoúpolis, you’ll find Ano Syros, a small village looking over Ermoúpolis.

Syros is a must-visit destination on any trip to the Cyclades. Head just out of Hermopoulis, and you’ll find stunning beaches that are less discovered by tourists. The island is a year-round destination, too!

Where is Syros Located?

Syros is a hidden gem in the northern Cyclades islands, near the islands of Tinos and Mykonos and not far from Serifos, Andros, Paros and Naxos. Its location in the Aegean sea means you can bask in warm, crystal clear waters and enjoy fantastic weather!

Weather in Syros Greece

Syros has a Mediterranean climate with mild, rainy winters and warm, sunny summers. Temperatures range from 10.5 °C in January to 25 °C in July.

When is the Best Time to Visit Syros?

There are so many things to do in Syros that are not beaches, and Syros is the perfect Greek island destination all year round. The best times to visit Syros are August to October and May to avoid the winds.

The Greek Island of Syros with Kids

syros townscape, syros greece

We visited Syros in July 2021 as part of our 2-month trip around the Cyclades islands when my daughter was 23 months old. We stayed for four nights in the beach village of Vari before spending one night in Ermoúpolis and heading on to Tinos.

Syros is the perfect island for families. A circular bus route takes you to all the main beaches in Syros, so you can easily go beach hop with kids. Taxis are much cheaper than other islands in the Cyclades, too! Vari was the ideal choice of destination.

There are plenty of accommodation options, mainly family-run, close to the beach, and providing cots for young children. The Hermes Hotel in Ermoúpolis was very accommodating, even providing a special duvet for my daughter to play with. We also had a fantastic view of Hermopoulis from our window.

The food in Syros, Greece, is fantastic, and the prices are low. The people make families very welcome and often have highchairs for young children. We were even treated to chocolate lollies after our meal!

How do you get to Syros Island?

Ano Syros is a picturesque catholic village situated on a hill overlooking Ermopouli that returns to 1200AD.

You can walk along the traditional Cycladic streets and climb the whitewashed steps here. Enjoy the slower pace of life, eat in the traditional tavernas, take in the views, and see how many cats you can spot. Make sure you visit Saint George Catholic Cathedral.

2. Kini Syros

Kini syros, syros with kids, syros greece

Kini Beach is one of the best sandy beaches in Syros. You won’t find the lines of sunloungers found on many other Greek islands. The laid-back beachside village is also one of Syros’s best places to stay. Kini is perfect for a low-key family holiday on a beautiful beach.

3. Azolimnos Syros

Just 5km from Hermopolis, Azolimnos is the perfect beach getaway destination. Behind the beach, many local cafes serve fresh cocktails and traditional Greek dishes.

Many of the beaches are shaded by trees, so you won’t have any trouble finding shade. However, if you’re looking for a full beach day destination, Azolmnos is not the best choice; it’s better for just a few hours at the beach. For a beach day, head to Vari, Kini, or Galissas.

4. Galissas Beach

Galissas Syros is one of many beaches in Greece that have won a Blue Flag award for cleanliness and facilities. The vast stretch of sand is perfect for a family day out. Behind the beach, you’ll find many souvenir shops, tavernas and takeaways, including some of the cheapest Gyros takeaways in Greece! Galissas is also one of the best places to stay in Syros, with many guesthouses and hotels lining the beach.

Note: If you’re visiting Galissas on a day trip, make sure you look at the wind forecast. We didn’t and ended up leaving because of the strong winds! The wind tends to blow at one side of the island each day during July and August, so make sure you choose your beach wisely!

5. Vari Beach

vari beach

Vari is one of the most popular beaches in Syros. This is where we based ourselves during our time on the island. The proximity to Ermopouli and a good bus route linking Vari with other beachside villages make Vari the perfect destination. You’ll find one of the best restaurants in Greece right on the beach. There are also sunbeds to rent and a beach bar.

We stayed at the Syros Holidays hotel, which also has a pool – all just steps away from the beach!

6. Finikas Syros

The seaside resort of Finikas has a small beach backed by a line of tavernas selling traditional Greek food. Free parasols are also available on the beach but get there early if you want one. The locals tend to arrive early, too.

Note that a small wall behind the beach separates Finikas from the road. If you have young kids or toddlers, it’s best to give this beach a miss or use it for a quick swim stop.

7. Eat Your Way Through the World-Class Restaurants

Syros is one of Greece’s hidden foodie destinations, away from the tourist trail. Throughout the island, you’ll find amazingly priced restaurants, traditional tavernas, and amazing Gyros.

Head to Axhladi Restaurant in Vari for a scenic meal made with local ingredients by a fantastic chef. Ano Syros also has some fantastic tavernas!

Along the waterfront in Hermopoulis, there are lots of food options. Sip a freshly made cold juice or dine on freshly made pasta, pizza and moussaka.

The stunning churches in Syros are a must-visit. See how many you can find when walking around the capital or spend the day driving around the different churches on the island.

The church of Metamorphosis, the first church of Ermoupolis, is one of the best churches in Syros to visit. The church is open to the public, with marble columns, beautiful icons, and impressive wood carving work.

9. Asteria Beach

Asteria Beach is not a beach but a platform equipped with free umbrellas in Hermopoulis, perfect for a dip after exploring the city. This is not recommended for younger kids because the sea is very deep once you’re off the platform.

10. Renaissance Cathedral of St George

High up in Ano Syros, the Cathedral of St George is a must-visit on a Syros trip. It’s the cathedral of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Syros and Milos. In the cathedral, you can see the icon of Saint George and the icon of the Mother of God, “Panagias tis Elpidas.”

Where to Stay in Syros: The Best Syros Hotels

Choosing the best area to stay in Syros for families is tough. If you want a beach holiday, head to the area of Vari or Gallissas. For a holiday in the town with trips visiting beaches and villages across the island + day trips, stay in Ermopoulis.

We stayed in Ermopoulis and thought it was better, although good bus routes connect the main towns and villages efficiently.

The Hermes Hotel (Syros Town)

things to do in syros island, greece sea, coast

The Hermes Hotel is by far the best in Syros. The rooms either overlook the entire Syros Port area or have sea views. Step out of the hotel, and you’ll be right in the centre of Hermopolis.

9 Reasons to Visit the Greek Island Syros

Syros. Never heard of it? We think Syros is one of the best kept secrets in the Greek Islands. And I don’t think it is going to stay a secret much longer! Here are 9 great reasons to visit the Greek Island Syros and why it’s possibly best Greek island to visit in May for food, history, culture and so much more!

Why Syros is the Best Destination in the Greek Islands

There are several reasons, well actually nine, for my enthusiasm for Syros: (click on the link to go straight to that reason, if you must)

  • It is uncrowded and relatively free from tourists.
  • It’s unique – boutique shops and marble streets (I kid you not!) are part of its classy look.
  • Great beaches! And that blue, crystal clear water you find in the Greek Islands!
  • The history and culture of Syros is fascinating!
  • Great restaurants and local specialty dishes .
  • Syros is affordable – very affordable actually. Even luxury hotels are a fraction of the cost of its glitzy neighbors.
  • Friendly locals.
  • It’s clean and safe .
  • Easy to get to Syros – only a short ferry ride from Athens or Mykonos.

So, if I’ve peaked your interest read on to #DiscoverSyros, the best Greek Island you’ve never heard of and learn why Compass & Fork thinks it is the best destination in the Greek Islands and why it should be on your next Greek Islands itinerary.

Great for Tourists but Not Full of Tourists

I have never seen Syros on anyone’s top 10 up and coming destination lists, or must visit places or other “best of” lists, (It will however now be on mine!) which means no one knows about it and they don’t know what they are missing.

However, that is starting to change. We were invited to visit Syros as part of #DiscoverSyros, a tourism campaign with twelve of our colleagues to discover the delights of Syros for ourselves. We all unanimously left amazed Syros has to date remained “undiscovered” by the tourism masses. If you are looking for a quiet Greek Island with plenty to do this is it.

Update: Traveller Magazine agrees with us that Syros is underrated and rates Syros one of the best Greek islands to visit to avoid the crowds. So the secret is out!

For the moment, inbound tourism to Syros is primarily from Athens and other, Greek locations. Not being overrun by tourists means Syros has retained its charm. Let’s hope it stays that way, but when you learn what is has to offer I think you will agree, Syros will not remain “undiscovered” for long.

Syros: Greek Island and Unique Capital of the Cyclades

Syros is the capital of the Cyclades Islands, a group of about 220 islands which also includes the very well known Greek Islands of Mykonos and Santorini , as well as Naxos , Ios, Paros and Tinos.

It has enjoyed a unique position in history which we will delve into in more detail in a moment, but suffice it to say, it’s strategic geographic position and age-old alliances enabled Syros to enjoy considerable commercial success and prosperity.

And it shows! In Hermopoulis (or Ermoupolis), the main streets and many buildings are made of marble! Boutique shops with elegant window displays invite you to explore inside. Brightly colored bougainvillea climbs the sides of buildings and snakes around the shop fronts framing them in a picturesque manner.

It is all spotlessly clean, safe, and possibly the best Greek island to visit in May when the weather is just right.Syros weather is not to hot, sunny and in May the winds are pleasant.

Syros is very pleasing to the eye and one of the most beautiful Greek Islands we have visited. Having arrived via the ferry from graffiti covered Athens – the contrast could not have been starker. Especially after the crowds at the Parthenon .

Syros the Best Destination in the Greek Islands www.compassandfork.com

The Many Great Beaches on Syros Island

Not all Greek Islands have good beaches, despite what you may think. And some are not easily accessible. Syros is a relatively small island and it has several, great beaches for swimming, sunbaking, and some charming Greek Island tavernas right on the water.

Three of Syros Best Beaches: Galissas, Kini, and Finikas Beach. But you could visit a different beach everyday for a month!

It might just be the best Greek Island for beaches.

Galissas Beach

Galissas is probably the most developed of the three Syros beaches we discuss here, and developed is a relative term. There are a few hotels, some restaurants and a gentle beach with lounge chairs and umbrellas.

A perfect place to relax in the sun or go for a swim. There is no large-scale, commercial development anywhere on Syros beaches. Galissas Beach is perfectly suitable for children and toddlers.

It is easy to reach from Hermopoulis along a paved road. There is also local bus service.

Accommodation options include hotels and self-contained apartments. Be aware these hotels are seasonal and close in November, not reopening until Greek Orthodox Easter or early April, depending on the calendar. ( Greek Orthodox Easter which may or may not be the same time of year as traditional Easter depending on the Greek Orthodox calendar.)

Click here to check availability of Syros hotels and how affordable it is to stay in Galissas.

Where to Eat at Galissas Beach

If you are looking for a great place to eat, we recommend AVentoura , for a casual dining atmosphere, right on the beach. If your mother was a really, good, Greek cook, the meals served hare are the types of meals she would make. It has traditional favorites and some modern, Greek fare as well. The restaurant was comfortably busy during our lunch. Being a large table of 12, we were able to sample many dishes.

A selection of breads went well with the parsley salad and eggplant salad (both what I would call dips and both divine). We also enjoyed, Greek salad with basil, lettuce, dried tomato, cheese and walnut salad, and a beautiful lentil salad. Also enjoyable were the selection of grilled cheeses, French fries (everywhere on Syros and throughout Greece), zucchini fries with aioli, and an omelet served with Syros sausage, a very traditional food.

Heavier fare included stuffed tomatoes and peppers (with raisins, potato and feta cheese), pork steaks, marinated chicken with white wine and thyme (a standout), and black angus burger, with all the trimmings.

And for desserts we enjoyed orange pie (actually cake, and was utterly delicious), and Greek yogurt with fruits.

Service was good, as was the excellent selection of wines and beers. Given the location, moderate pricing and quality of food, this is a great choice to experience a friendly, Syros taverna and experience Greek Island taverna hospitality.

Syros is the Best Destination in the Greek Islands www.compassandfork.com

Kini Beach is a wide, sandy beach with a choice of several waterside tavernas and hotels. It is quiet and has public bus access from Hermopoulis. During the day, tour buses do drop off tourists but this gives the beach atmosphere rather than creating a crowded beach.

We stayed here at the Blue Harmony Hotel. It’s a lovely beach-front property. Rooms are comfortable, clean and most have small balconies that face the beach. It is family-owned and operated. The hosts were lovely and nothing was too much trouble.

Breakfast varied each day, but included coffee, pastries, and eggs of some variety. (We did not go hungry!). There is a bar and café which are open to non-hotel guests as well.

Syros the Best Destination in the Greek Islands www.compassandfork.com

Where to Eat in Kini Beach

Apart from the Blue Harmony Hotel, on the waterfront there are several dining options. We tried Mageiroistories and Allou Yialou.

Mageiroistories is right next door to the Blue Harmony Hotel. It is a simple taverna with the tables situated right on the beach. You can also dine inside. It features delicious, home-cooked meals and friendly wait staff. Being on the beach, the emphasis is on casual dining and fresh seafood. Our grilled seafood was delicious and very reasonably-priced. The salad was crisp and refreshing. Simple, healthy food cooked just right!

Allou Yialou is a more up-market, restaurant-style, dining experience. Also on the waterfront, you have lovely views over the Kini harbor. Eating here was one of the highlights of our 5 days on Syros and is our pick for a special occasion, or romantic dinner.

Here you can expect fine dining. The staff do an excellent job at perfectly explaining the dishes on offer and matching them with wines. We enjoyed soups, salads, including a delightful, grilled seafood salad, exquisitely presented fish dishes and fabulous desserts. For meat lovers, there is also a good range of steaks, chicken and pork dishes.

Finikas Beach

Finikas Beach is the second largest beach on the island. It too features accommodation options, waterside tavernas and you can reach it by bus.

Many More Syros Beaches

This is but a sampling of the many beaches on Syros; others include Vari, Possidonia, Megas Gialos and Azolimnos, and there are many more. Some are white, sandy beaches, some are pebble beaches. Accessibility and popularity varies. Some of the northern beaches, which we did not explore, are reputed to be relatively crowd free. If you don’t like you first choice, try another beach! I am sure you will find a Syros beach that meets you needs.

Watersports, boat rentals, snorkeling and diving are all available. Services vary by area.

Syros has History and Culture

You can’t walk far from your arrival at the port where the ferry docks, before you begin to notice the architecture in Hermopoulis (also Ermoupolis). Most of the buildings you see, many made of marble, were built in the mid- late 19 th century when refugees arrived from other parts of Greece and Crete. Hermopoulis is named after the Greek god of profit or trade, Hermes .

Syros, the capital of the Cyclades Islands, was very prosperous during this time period. It was the center of trade between the East and West and an important commercial center. The new refugees brought skills, built buildings and started businesses. The lighthouse at the port is the oldest and tallest in Greece.

With wealthy patrons, the arts thrived with great public buildings, sculptures, and fountains erected. Under French influence, a central town plan was created in 1837. The Apollon Theatre, inspired by Europe’s great Opera Houses, and where you can still see a performance today, was built in 1862-1864. Beautiful churches including the Church of St. Nicholas, one of the town’s most iconic buildings, dates from this period.

Schools, libraries, printing houses (Syros was one of the first printing centers in the world producing newspapers and books) and museums flourished. The town hall and Miaouli Square were built from1876-1889.

History of Syros

But the history of Syros is much older than the 1800’s with artifacts, including jewelry, statues and ceramics, found dating to 2700 BC, a civilization known as Keros-Syros. Homer refers to the island in The Odyssey .

Syros is quite rocky, (the name translates to “rocky”), and the settlement from Medieval time, Anos Syros (upper Syros), the original and oldest part of town, is built on the rocky hillside. Providing protection from pirates, and later invasions by the Turks (1617) and the French.

Explore Anos Syros

One of the best things you can do on Syros, is to explore Anos Syros, which is today a quaint hillside neighborhood. Start at the top of the hill at the Church of St. George. Excavations and records show there has been a church on this site since 300 BC. The Church of St. George has been here since 1208, although the current building is much newer. The hilltop provides fantastic views of Syros.

As you stroll down the windy walkways (warning quite steep and a lot of stairs) you’re rewarded with discoveries of quaint shops, restaurants and the Vamvakáris Museum, dedicated to Márkos Vamvakáris , a famous bouzouki player (a traditional Greek string instrument a bit like a guitar) from Syros.

You will also pass the Capuchin Monastery, a catholic monastery founded in 1637.

Syros Flourishes as a Safe Haven

During French Occupation (19 th century), the French signed a treaty with the Turks, creating a French protectorate for Catholics. Syros therefore avoided later conflicts, which means there is no war damage to the buildings or infrastructure. This is very different to other parts of Greece, especially Crete, which suffered major damage during WWII.

As a safe haven, Syros flourished, becoming the most important commercial and shipping port in Greece and the center of trading between the East and West. Even today, Syros remains the largest port in the Cyclades islands. Syros also attracted refugees from elsewhere in Greece, many of them skilled laborers who were fleeing persecution and settled in Syros. Among these refugees were skilled marble and stonemasons from Tinos and Paros. And, although there is a marble quarry on Syros, which you can see on the road to Kini Beach, marble used for building was also brought from nearby Tinos and Paros.

The architectural style which has Roman influence is known as neoclassical and is unique in Greece. Most buildings, even 2-3 story buildings, are constructed entirely of marble and feature marble staircases, ceiling frescoes, and sculptures. The architectural style and feel is often described as “aristocratic” and you can imagine at the time these were built, it was all very regal. The buildings, including the paint on the doors and windows, is all in very soothing shades of pastels. With the present-day, boutique shops lining the marble streets the aristocratic feel remains.

Visit the Old Industrial Museum

For a look at Hermopoulis during its peak, visit the Old Industrial Museum. The museum contains relics and machinery from when Syros was a thriving municipality full of tanneries, flour mills (for loukoumi, more on that below), cloth mills for silk and cotton from Egypt, sawmills, ironworkers, shipyard, and soap factories. Located inside an old factory, the Katsimantis dyeworks, built in 1888, the building has also been a factory making nails, needles and lead shot. In 2000, it was converted to a museum.

Inside you’ll find:

  • The first electric car manufactured in the world
  • Maps and pictures, town plans, old machinery, tools and industrial products
  • Visit the Anerousis Lead Shot Factory with its original equipment form 1889.
  • Kornilakis Tannery from 1880, also survives with much of its original equipment
  • Verissaropoulos Textile Factory housing a collection of various machines from textile factories in Hermopoulis.

Syros in Modern Times

Each year the Greek Island of Syros hosts the Aniya Syros Festival a festival of animation. The festival and the Greek National Opera (GNO) combined opera and animation in 2015, and this has become part of the festival. 2017 marked the 10 th anniversary of the Aniya Syros Festival .

A film school and studio, to film and edit “Hollywood” blockbuster movies on the island, was announced in October 2017.

And tourism is a growing industry on Syros, visitor numbers continue to increase, and more and more jobs are created in this sector.

Specialty Foods of Syros

Here are a few local specialty foods, you will find on Syros, and one specialty drink! It is worth seeking these out as you won’t find them in too many other places, and certainly not outside of the Greek Islands.

Syros is the Best Destination in the Greek Islands www.compassandfork.com

You might know it as Turkish Delight, but in Greece, it’s called Loukoumi, simply water, starch and sugar. Traditional flavors include rose, bergamot, and mastic. My favorite flavor was rose, resulting in a subtle, pink-colored loukoumi. In Syros, Greece ( or Siros Greece ), loukoumi is still made by hand, using time-honored processes. Loukoumi from Syros is famous, primarily because of the nature of the water on Syros, which gives the loukoumi a unique consistency and taste.

The water, starch and sugar are heated in a copper cauldron. The mixture is stirred, both by machine and by hand until the mixture is of a certain consistency. The success of the batch is therefore heavily reliant on the experience, gained over many years and handed down from generation to generation, of the operator. The mixture is then cooled in wooden creates, dusted with icing sugar, cut into small squares and again dusted with icing sugar before being packed, ready for sale.

Loukoumi is the island’s number one food product, and was the reason there were so many flour mills at the turn of the century on Syros. Watch this quick 30 second video to see the final preparation of Loukoumi:

Fennel pie is very common on the island of Syros and it comes in many shapes and sizes. It is also known as marathopita and is simply pastry enveloping a mixture of spices, wild greens (horta) and fennel leaves (the greens growing above the fennel bulb). It is incredibly healthy for you and you will find it in most Syros restaurants.

Fennel, thyme and sage all grow wild in Syros, as do many “wild greens”. There may be up to 6 or 7 different types of wild greens in horta. As the different wild greens have different growing seasons, the nature of the wild greens changes with the seasons and therefore so does the Fennel Pie! A good place to eat fennel pie is at Archontariki Ermoupoli or Stin Ithaki tou Ai .

It is simple to make, as demonstrated in this short video here by the staff at Archontariki Ermoupoli.

Cheeses and Cheese Dips

We enjoyed many, fine cheeses on Syros. Look out for St Michael’s cheese. It’s a hard, slightly spicy cheese made from pasteurized cow’s milk, not dissimilar to a good Italian, parmesan cheese.

On more than one occasion, we enjoyed a spicy, cheese dip, called kopanisti. You make kopanisti with soft cheese and it has a creamy consistency and peppery flavor.

Look out also for any home-made, soft, hard and fresh cheeses that might be available. They are quite common on Syros and are a great opportunity to try cheeses that might be new to you. One such location was at the Tsipouro Distillery, below.

Syros the Best Destination in the Greek Islands www.compassandfork.com

Greek tsipouro is, like Turkish raki or Italian grappa, a spirit made from the grape skins leftover from wine production. It is a very popular drink at social gatherings throughout Syros, as well as many other Greek Islands.

While on Syros we visited the first commercial distillery on the island making tsipouro. We tasted the product at the Syros Distillery and it was good! It was here we also enjoyed some home-made cheeses, made by the distiller’s family. And the distillery has a fantastic view!

The distillery is newly open to the public, and are still setting up a website. When we get a link we will provide one.

Local Sausages

I love to try local sausages, wherever we travel. And, the pork and fennel sausages on Syros are a standout! Make sure you try them at the many restaurants which feature them.

Other Great Syros Foods

Look out for honey, olives, capers, sun-dried tomatoes and walnuts in your travels around the island. They’re all good and just seem to have more taste than the same product from other places.

You can find out more about the local food delicacies of Syros here.

More Great Restaurants and Bars in Hermopoulis

There are many dining options in Hermopoulis ranging from the very basic to fine dining. As well, there is a thriving bar scene on Syros. Coffee on Syros was also good. Here are a few of our favorites:

Stin Ithaki tou Ai

The location alone of Stin Ithaki tou Ai, is reason to visit this friendly taverna. It’s located in the most attractive lane in Heropoulis, with its marble pavers and gorgeous bougainvillea adorning walls and pergolas. There is plenty of indoor seating available. But, it is outdoors, under the bougainvillea, you want to be enjoying the warm, Syros climate.

This restaurant wins the award for the friendliest staff on Syros. It has all your favorite, Greek foods and is very moderately priced. Make sure you try the Fennel Pie here!

On more than one occasion we visited Suerte! for some excellent, late-night cocktails and wines. Indoors is cozy, which suited us just fine as September evenings can be cool. In the warmer months, there is plenty of outdoors seating to take advantage of.

The drinks list gives you the opportunity to enjoy Greek wines, including some wines from Syros. So, while in Rome, take advantage of it! There is also a full range of cocktails, beers and spirit drinks. Suerte! Is a perfect place to drop in for a nightcap to end your perfect day in Syros!

Megaron Café Bar

Long-time readers are well aware of our love affair with coffee . And on Syros, although we did not visit all the available cafes, we quite enjoyed the coffee at Megaron . Situated in another one of those beautiful, marble streets in Hermopoulis, inside a stately, old building, Megaron has a relaxed atmosphere to enjoy your brew of choice.

More Great Reasons to Visit Syros

And if I still haven’t convinced you, the locals are friendly, helpful and there is a lot of English spoken, (in case you don’t speak Greek). Syros is safe and clean. The roadsides and beaches were spotless. Everything looks well maintained.

And it is all very affordable! Just a fraction of the cost of it’s more expensive and glitzy neighbors Mykonos and Santorini .

Syros accommodation, including luxury hotels in Hermopoulis are much more affordable than you might find on other Greek Islands. Two five-star options worthy of consideration are Hotel Ploes and the Apollonion Palace . The Diogenis Hotel also receives great reviews. You can check prices and availability for Syros accommodation here .

If you are looking for luxury closer to the beach, try the Hotel Benois or the Dolphin Bay Hotel in Galissas . The Kini Bay or the Blue Harmony are both good choices in Kini Beach .

Getting to Syros

And the last and final reason, it’s easy to get to Syros. Since Syros is a Greek Island close to Athens, it is only a short ferry ride from Athens (3 or 4 hours) or on the high-speed ferry it is only a one-hour journey to Mykonos . You can bring a car on the ferry or just buy a passenger ticket.

Syros is one of the worlds best kept secrets. So secret that you appear to have missed the best beach ! I would recommend going there now before the world discovers what an absolute gem Syros really is. My wife has been going there since 1962 and introduced me to the island 14 years ago ..it’s heaven on earth …..

Jeremy- thanks for commenting- it is a well kept secret! But I too think that will be changing as more people find out about how lovely it is.

Hallo every one , Chris here i like to tell ,live there for 15 year now ,it,s a Nice Island ,,,but like you guys say ,,,it,s not so frienly like ,,,People say ,,,,that Rights ,,you have to understand Them ,,just be you self in-sted ,,there are Many good things there for sure ,and good unspoiled beaches, where you have to walk to get beach any way have fun bye going there ,,,see you there Abela beach

Great Story! Thanks for your Promotion for „my“ Island in the sun. As an Austrian Woman i live here since 3 Years permantly. Syros cannot be compared with any other Island of the Cyclades. It is amazing. I enjoy very day here on that „Secret“ Place wehre your Soul Makel holidays. You forgot to mention the only one hospital from the cyclades and the national Airport that i use often to Fly to Athens.

Thank you for your comment Christina. Nice to know about the hospital and the airport. Syros has everything you need whether you are a tourist or a resident. Another plus are the direct ferry links to Mykonos and Athens.

Ryan Biddulph

Seems like checks all across the board. I dig it has a different feel to it, plus it is tourist friendly yet not overrun. Those are my fave spots. Hey I’m a tourist too. I get that I am a visitor. But when you see a more chill place with a laid back vibe and few tourists you’ve the perfect mix for me. Fabulous post.

Ryan, Thanks for commenting, glad you enjoyed the post! Syros was a great discovery- and not sure we should tell people about it 🙂 Hope you get to visit one day soon. Cheers

Alex of Wanderlust Marriage

Great article! I agree- Syros is one of the best islands to visit in Greece. Beautiful place, great food, not too expensive and not overrun with tourists. We spent a New Year’s in Syros- not the most ideal time to visit but as it’s the capital of the Cyclades it was a good place to be for it. Mykonos was more expensive for inferior accommodation and food, and not prettier (just different). Syros is just as pretty as Mykonos.

A couple other favorite places on the Greek islands are Naxos and Chania, Crete. Those places are touristy now too, but not that bad if you go in say October. Happy travels and again, great article on Syros!

Alex, We loved Naxos as well and Chania (Crete is coming shortly). Mykonos was better value than Santorini. Each of the Greek Islands has their own personality and attractions. We are amazed more people don’t know about Syros given how nice it is! (Mind you we had never heard of it either:) Glad you enjoyed the article and thanks for adding your experience in Syros and the other islands. Happy travels!

Syros Trails of Cultural Interest

syros culture trip

An interesting choice for the demanding visitor is the trekking trails on the old roads of the island which used to connect the settlements and were paved in their biggest part, as well as the trails which are used as passageways for the crops, the pastures and as an access to the hardly accessible coasts. The trails which served the transportation of marble from the old quarries to the cargo ships through the little ports of Ano Meria are interesting. 10 Routes characterized as Culturally Interesting have been chosen by the Region of South Aegean for these trekking trails.

The 7 first Trails form the network of Ano Meria in the north of the island, an area which maintains its natural and settling physiognomy almost untouched by modern intervention.

The rest 3 Trails cross the central part of the island from the east to the west and vice versa, connecting Ermoupoli and Ano Syra to the most focal settlements, the important locations and the coasts of the area.

Ano Meria Network

1. Dili (Panachrantos) – Richopo (2km – 40 minutes).

Walkability: Moderate to good.Sign-posted.

A route that offers a beautiful view towards Ermoupoli. It leads to the small rural traditional settlement of Richopo, which is in a position of broad oversight of the marine horizon in the east.

2.Richopo – «Pherecydes Cave» – Platy Vouni (2km – 30 minutes).

Walkability: Very good. Sign-posted.

Walking from Richopo towards Platy Vouni, the walker meets a cavernous cavity, which is believed to be the cave originating from the island pre-Socratic philosopher Pherecydes. The ending in Platy Vouni provides the walker with the experience of his acquaintance with the liveliest rural settlement of Ano Meria built in an idyllic environment.

3. Platy Vouni – Chalandriani – Kastri (3km – 60 minutes)

Walkability: Good. Patchy difficult at the section Chalandriani – Kastri. For the time being roughly sign-posted.

This route crosses the sloping field of Chalandriani, where numerous tombs of the early-Cycladic period have been found, and after a short ascent to the steep slope of Kastri, it leads to the early-Cycladic acropolis, where the bases of the fortification and residential foundations are preserved.

4. Kampos – Lia (1.5km – 35 minutes).

Walkability: Good. For the time being roughly sign-posted.

Before the sandy beach of Lia, the route passes by the cave of Mentonis and Aerolithos (a rare geological phenomenon) which rises in the middle of the trail.

5. Kampos – Gria Spilia – [Grammata] – Diapori (3.5km – 60 minutes until Grammata, 4.5km – 1 hour 20 minutes until Diapori).

Walkability: Patchy difficult. For the time being roughly sign-posted.

A trail once passed by the workers of the quarry in order to load marble at the little port of Grammena.

From Kampos, after 10 minutes walk, the hiker meets a half-ruined building, where there are still remains of hand saws with which the workers used to cut the marble, until the Occupation when the quarry operated. The route continues among stone walls, sages and thyme. Going downhill, the bay of Grammata emerges among the gorges. The signpost on the rocks shows the way to the beach, up to the point where the route reaches a well. From there a dense clump of pine trees begins stretching up to the shady beach of Gria Spilia (Old Cave). Across, on the smooth rocks, the walker can up close distinguish the inscriptions which gave the area its appellation. While enjoying a panoramic view to the sea and after a difficult access to the steep slope, the trail is completed on cape Diapori, the northernmost end of the island.

6. Papouri – Stream of Aetos – [Varvarousa Coast] – Aetos Coast (3.7km – 1 hour 15 minutes)

Walkability: Moderate to good. For the time being roughly sign-posted.

The trail starts near the chapel of Agios Panteleimonas. Walking to the mountain side across, along the stream, it bifurcates and alternatively it leads to the peaceful and eerie bays of Aetos and Varvarousa. The alternations of vegetation along the route are impressive.

7. Chartiana – Delfini – Kini (3.5km – 1 hour 10 minutes).

Walkability: Difficult. It is not sign-posted.

The trail is parallel to the ravine of Kakos Potamos and Delfini. You will enjoy a sunset of unique beauty from the beach. It is worth continuing to the coastal trail up to Kini offering a special view.

Central Syra

8. Ermoupoli – Piskopio – [Monastery of Agia Varvara – Kini] – Spring of Trypiti – Dani (4.2km – 1 hour 25 minutes).

The old stone-paved road which connects Ermoupoli to the holiday village of the island, lush Piskopio, is included in this route and it has been declared a protected newest monument. From there the route goes on in the trail which passes behind the monastery of Agia Varvara and the spring of Trypiti, reaching up to Dani. Close to the monastery there is a bifurcation leading to Kini.

9. Kini – Loto – Dani – Galissas (3.8km – 1 hour 15 minutes).

Walkability: Good. Sign-posted.

A route with excellent view towards the western coasts of the island. Starting from the beach in Kini, it meets the previous one in Dani and it ends to the beach of Galissas.

10. Piskopio – Voulia – Alithini – [Agia Paraskevi] – Ano Syra – Αgios Athanasios (4km – 1 hour 15 minutes).

Walkability: Very good. For the moment only the section Piskopio – Voulia – Alithini is sign-posted.

A landlocked route which connects lush Piskopio to the much-sung amphitheatrical location of Alithini and Ano Syra, the historical traditional settlement of the island with a strongly medieval fortress physiognomy. The walker, following the wide cobbled-trail afterwards, leads to the church and the spring of Agios Athanasios, deep in a ravine.

A Guide to Syros: The Lady of the Cyclades

syros culture trip

Just a few hours from Athens by ferry lies Syros, the administrative capital of the Cyclades island cluster . Syros is a special place and a favorite island for second homes among many Athenians. Visitors enjoy a small island experience with an international, multicultural ambiance.

From art openings to theater performances and film festivals to fine dining, Syros feels different from most traditional Greek islands. It is also one of the few Greek islands that are active all year round, making it a good choice if full-time island life is one of your dreams.

The History of Syros

To fully appreciate Syros, it is essential to understand its history. The island was inhabited by Romans, Venetians, Franks, and Turks, and these influences are evident throughout the island today. For example, even though over 95% of Greece’s general population identifies as Greek Orthodox, almost 50% of Syriots (people from Syros) identify as Catholic.

Civilization in Syros began in the Early Bronze Age, and you can see traces of those inhabitants today. Located on the northeastern coast, Kastri, the first settlement on the island, dates back between 2,800 to 2,300 BC. Take a few hours to visit the archaeological sites of Chalandriani and Kastri and connect with ancient Syros.

In the Middle Ages, Syros was under constant attack by Venetians, Franks, and Turks. In the early 1200s, the island was conquered by the Venetians and remained under Venetian rule for over 300 years. This left a strong Catholic influence on the island, which intensified in the coming centuries.

The Ottoman invasion began in the 16th century, and by 1522 Syros was under Ottoman rule. However, Syros came under the protection of the Vatican and France, allowing the Catholic community of Syros to have some privileges. Many Syriots became Catholic, and Catholic churches and monasteries were established during this period.

Syros remained neutral at the beginning of the Greek Revolution in 1821, and this neutrality attracted many Greek refugees from Asia Minor, Smyrna, Chios, and other Greek islands. These refugees built the capital city of Ermoupoli, bringing with them their cultural influences. When Greece won the war and was declared an independent state in 1830, Syros became part of the First Hellenic Republic.

Because of its colorful past, Syros today is strikingly sophisticated and multi-dimensional. Below are four things to see and do in Syros.

1. Take in a Sunset at Ano Syros

©iStock/milangonda

Be sure to take the opportunity to visit the fortress town of Ano Syros, located above the capital city of Ermoupoli. In ancient times, this village was gated, allowing inhabitants to ward off or escape from pirate raids. The highest point of the town is the Catholic Cathedral of Agios Giorgios (Saint George), and on clear days, you can see the neighboring islands of Tinos, Naxos, and Paros.

With its winding, steep cobbled paths, it is easy to get lost in the maze of Ano Syros, but the views throughout the village are breathtaking, and you’ll have ample opportunity to stop for a beverage or snack at the cafes and restaurants all throughout the village. Drop into Feggari , an artist-owned cafe/bar with a warm ambiance, a festive vibe, and amazing views.

2. Appreciate the Arts at the Apollon Theater

If you are a culture vulture, no trip to Syros is complete without a visit to the Apollon Theater . Inspired by the famous Italian opera house LaScala, this 300-seat theater hosts a wide array of productions and festivals, including opera, theater, dance, and music festivals ranging from classical and jazz to contemporary music. If film is your thing, you are also in luck because Syros is home to an annual international film festival and an annual animation film festival .

Over 150 years old, the Apollon Theater building is worth a visit, even outside of the performances it hosts. Featuring a plush red and gold interior, the third floor of this theater includes a small exhibition of posters, photographs, programs, and other remnants from the theater’s colorful past.

3. Explore the Grandeur of Ermoupoli

©iStock/SHansche

Named after Hermes, the messenger god of trade and travel, Ermoupoli was at one time the principal port of Greece. Today, it is the largest town in the Cyclades and is known for its impressive and varied architecture and European feel.

The Town Hall of Ermoupolis, located in Miaouli Square, features sweeping marble floors, rich oil paintings, as well as the Archaeological Museum of Syros and public service offices. Designed by the Bavarian architect Ernst Ziller, the building was completed in 1898. Step inside to look around or enjoy the neoclassical architecture from the steps of this impressive building.

After visiting the Town Hall, head to the aristocratic Vaporia district of the city, where you’ll find colorful, high-ceiling captains’ mansions built along the seaside. Vaporia is considered one of the most prestigious districts in Syros, and beyond the impressive architecture, it offers a few small beaches for swimming and sunbathing. The Church of St. Nicholas, with its famous bell towers, is also worth visiting.

4. Celebrate Two Easters on the Same Day

Easter is by far the most celebrated holiday in Greece, and because most of the country’s population is Orthodox, Easter celebrations often fall a week or two after Catholic Easter. However, Syros negotiated a special arrangement with the Pope to allow both Easters to be celebrated on the Orthodox Easter date. The whole island comes together for Easter week, and from Catholic to Greek Orthodox churchgoers, there is an air of excitement and reverence.

The Easter celebration stretches for a whole week (called the Big Week), with the weekend events commanding the most attention. On Big Friday, three Epitaph processions weave through Ermoupoli before meeting in Miaoulis Square. With the solemn music, candle-lit processions, and religious hymns, the event leaves a powerful impression on you. The Resurrection of Christ is celebrated at midnight on Saturday, and with so many Catholic and Orthodox churches, you’ll have many choices of where to go. Consider heading to the Church of St. Nicholas in Vaporia for the candle lighting and well-wishing “Christos Anesti” meaning “Christ has risen.” Greek Easter in Syros is a magical event and a good reminder that it is possible for different religions to peacefully, and supportively co-exist.

The most popular way to get to Syros is by boat with multiple ferry options each day to and from Piraeus port in Athens. The speed ferries can make the journey in just over two hours, while the slower ferries take a little under four hours.

Syros also has a national airport (airport code: JKY) offering limited flights to and from Athens. The 35-minute flight brings you to a single runway strip located in Manna on the west side of the island.

When to Visit Syros

Syros can be visited at any time. It is a bustling, active island, even in the off-season, offering visitors culture and entertainment year-round. Your expectations, however, should be different depending on the season. If beach-going and warm weather are what you have in mind, the months of June through October are the most ideal. Expect mild, rainy winters and warm, sunny summers.

It should also be mentioned that while Syros does offer seagoing options, it is not traditionally known for its beaches. If beach hopping is in your plans, check out Galissas, Megas Gialos, Kini, and Poseidonia beaches.

Where to Stay in Syros

Syros offers lots of accommodation options with a concentration of hotels in Ermoupoli. Staying in the capital city gives you a great opportunity to be near the main activities, and most visitors opt to make this their base.

For a comfortable stay at a mid-range hotel in an impressive building listed as a historical monument, try Syrou Melathron in the Vaporia district near Asteria Bay. The restoration of this 18-room hotel preserved many historical details, including balconies made of Parian marble and ornately painted ceilings.

If you want to go upscale, try the top-rated Hotel Ploes at 2 Apollonos, Ermoupolis. This eight-room boutique hotel is set in a 19th-century neoclassical mansion featuring lots of tasteful touches, including vaulted, painted ceilings, genuine Venetian chandeliers, and a collection of art from the late 20th century.

For a more budget option, try Diogenis Hotel located in Ermoupolis about 250 meters from the nearest beach. Renovated in 2015, this 40-room hotel once served as a warehouse, a tannery, and even a cabaret. These days, it offers guests modern amenities, including a 24-hour bar/cafe, WiFi, and even secretarial services.

Your first trip to Syros is rarely your last, as this stately island has a lot to offer year-round. Come for a theater performance or film festival and then begin planning your return trip.
