Road Trips From Omaha

These getaways are just a car ride away. Read on for destinations to consider for your next overnight or weekend trip.

short road trips from omaha

Honey Creek, Iowa

Home to one of my favorite places to hike in the Loess Hills of Iowa, Honey Creek is my go-to destination on a sunny weekend day. Hike at Hitchcock Nature Center, visit the goats and try goat yoga at Honey Creek Creamery, or ski at Mount Crescent Ski Resort.

Tip : Don't skip the visitor's center at Hitchcock Nature Center. It's full of interactive exhibits for kids. In the winter, you can rent snowshoes there. It's next to the lookout tower.

Fort Atkinson State Historical Park (Fort Calhoun, Neb.)

Fort Calhoun is Omaha's friendly neighbor to the north. It's worth stopping in the town for a number of reasons, but the biggest one is to see Fort Atkinson State Historical Park. It's a living history experience from May to October, when there are re-enactments on the first weekend of each month. It's interactive, so it makes it really fun for kids.

Louisville, Neb.

Louisville is a small town that packs in a lot of big outdoor adventures. Between Platte River State Park and Louisville State Recreation Area, there's horseback riding, a sandy lake beach, archery, hiking, paddleboating, an epic sprayground, and an even more epic inflatable obstacle course.

Distance from Omaha : 20 miles

short road trips from omaha

Springfield, Neb.

Home to the Sarpy County Fair in the summer and just south of Omaha, Springfield is an easy day trip for Omaha families. I usually pair a visit to Springfield with a trip to a nearby state park.

You could visit Louisville SRA for water time at the beach and inflatable obstacle course and end the day at the old-fashioned soda fountain at Springfield Drug for ice cream. Or, hike Schramm Park and then sip the afternoon away at Soaring Wings Vineyard & Brewery.

Tip : Soaring Wings often has live music, especially on the weekend. Pack a picnic and lawn chairs, and then buy a bottle of wine to enjoy an evening overlooking the vineyard.

short road trips from omaha

Best Nest Farm (Glenwood, Iowa)

Glenwood, Iowa is a small town with a lot to offer, but I'm focusing on this perfect little getaway just outside of town: Best Nest Farm. You can stay in luxury covered wagons! Stays include access to kayaks to explore the lake on the property, and a whole of cute farm animals to meet.

If you do venture into town, there's a great brewery called Keg Creek, as well as a great candy/ice cream shop called The Sugar Makery. I created an itinerary for a visit to Glenwood if you're interested!

Distance from Omaha : 25 miles

short road trips from omaha

Scatter Joy Acres (Murray, Neb.)

Scatter Joy Acres was a popular petting zoo in Omaha, and it relocated to Murray, Neb., for more spacious digs. Visitors can enter the pens of various animals including the typical -- goats, horses, cows -- to the more exotic -- porcupine, kangaroos, and a zebra.

Distance from Omaha : 26 miles

short road trips from omaha

Ashland, Neb.

Enjoy a mix of history and nature on a visit to Ashland, Neb. Exit 420 off Interstate 80 will take you to three of the state's big attractions: Strategic Air Command & Aerospace Museum, Wildlife Safari Park, and Mahoney State Park. Just beyond those attractions, you'll find Platte River State Park (look for the waterfall!).

If you're visiting in the summer, Mahoney State Park offers a full day of activities, including horseback trail rides, an aquatic center with a wave pool and water slides, and putt-putt golf.

Tip : Ashland is home to two great wineries. My favorite, Glacial Till, has a tasting room on the main street of town. Try the cider.

Distance from Omaha : 30 miles

short road trips from omaha

Nebraska City, Neb.

It doesn't matter the season, Nebraska City is a favorite day trip for my family. We'll spend a few hours at an apple orchard like Kimmel, and a few more hours at Arbor Day Farm Tree Adventure. You can also tack on a visit to Arbor Lodge to explore the historic mansion.

Tip : Have a blast exploring the Treetop Village treehouses tucked inside the Tree Adventure.

short road trips from omaha

Lincoln, Neb.

Most Nebraskans make the trek to Lincoln at least once, if only to attend a University of Nebraska-Lincoln Huskers football game. The city has a college town feel to it, with affordable local restaurants, charming shops, and plenty of museums.

Learn about Nebraska's unique history and see giant Mammoth fossils at Morril Hall. If traveling young kids, a stop at the Lincoln Children's Zoo and Lincoln Children's Museum is a must.

Tip : Don't skip the charming Haymarket district!

Recommended Hotel : Graduate Lincoln

short road trips from omaha

Branched Oak State Recreation Area, Neb.

There aren't too many lakes in Nebraska with sandy beaches, but this is one of them. Bring your RV or tent for a low-key, beachy-y getaway.

Tip : Branched Oak is a large enough lake for boating.

Distance from Omaha : 75 miles

short road trips from omaha

Brownville, Neb.

For such a small town, Brownville packs in a lot of history and arts. Bookstores, galleries, and one excellent winery can found in the town of a population just over 100, as well as a vibrant seasonal music and theater scene.

Tip : Brownville is pretty close to Indian Cave State Park, which has horseback riding, great hiking trails, and an interesting little living history area.

short road trips from omaha

Lake Icaria, Iowa

For a relaxing lake getaway, Lake Icaria near Corning, Iowa, is a well-known secret to Omaha families. This is the place for fishing and water fun in the summer. The cabins are affordable, but RV and tent camping is also available.

Tip : Food trucks stop by on the weekends, seasonally. We lucked out and found a barbecue truck on the Saturday we were there.

Recommended stay : If you can't snag a cabin at the park, stay in town at a cozy rental home .

Distance from Omaha : 85 miles

short road trips from omaha

Sioux City, Iowa

Sioux City has two of my favorite things: A gorgeous state park in town, and museums. Stone State Park has wonderful trails and is near the Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center, which has a great nature playscape. For museums, families with young kids will want to go to LaunchPAD Children’s Museum.

Art lovers should check out the Grant Wood corn room at Sioux City Art Center. And music lovers should check out the memorabilia scattered throughout the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino.

Tip : Don't leave without a visit to Palmer’s Old Tyme Candy Shoppe, home to the Twin Bing.

Recommended hotel : I've stayed at the Hard Rock Casino & Hotel in Sioux City - and it's great - but I wouldn't recommend it for families. Check outt the highest rated hotels for families on booking.com like the Courtyard .

Distance from Omaha : 95 miles

short road trips from omaha

Loess Hills National Scenic Byway

One of the most rare ecological landforms in the world is found along western Iowa – the Loess Hills. For some of you, simply viewing the bucolic scenes of the rolling hills will be enough reason to visit. For the rest of, you’ll want some fun or historical stops for the trip.

Tip: For great weather for hiking, late May isn't too rainy or hot, and October is great for seeing fall colors.

Distance from Omaha : Varies (5 miles to about 100 miles)

short road trips from omaha

Winterset, Iowa

The town nestled in midst of Madison County is Winterset, Iowa – and there’s a lot more to do than just see its famous bridges. If you have kids, seek out Clark Tower for your own Rapunzel-like experience or any of the nearby parks.

Without kids? Check out the wineries and breweries in town or a museums. And plan an overnight in a B&B.

Tip : The Iowa Theater, which dates back to 1899, is still showing movies,

Distance from Omaha : 125 miles

short road trips from omaha

Des Moines, Iowa

Indoors or outdoors, Des Moines has a lot for young (and young at heart) to enjoy. Favorites of my family include the Science Center of Iowa, Adventureland, and Living History Farms.

Tip : One location of my favorite Des Moines restaurant, Fong's Pizza, is within walking distance of the science center. If you time it right, the large Des Moines farmer's market takes place in front of Fong's too in the summer.

Hotel recommendation : There is no shortage of hotels in downtown Des Moines, but if you're looking for a hotel near Adventureland, we liked the Fairfield Inn (technincally in Altoona).

Looking for an RV or campsite near Des Moines?

Distance from Omaha : 135 miles

short road trips from omaha

Boone and Perry, Iowa

Boone is your winter and summer destination for activities, and the Hotel Pattee in Perry is where you'll want to stay. We've been to Boone in the summer to wander around the beautiful Ledges State Park and ride on the Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad. In the winter, we had a blast skiing and tubing at Seven Oaks Recreation.

Tip : Hotel Pattee's rooms are all themed, and you can request specific family suites with fun themes.

Recommended Hotel : Hotel Pattee in Boone

Distance from Omaha : 155 miles

short road trips from omaha

Ames is a college town, so no doubt you can catch an Iowa State game somewhere. But, if sports isn't your thing, visistt a quirky shop, stroll around Reiman Gardens, or drop by a museum or art gallery.

Tip : If you’re craving pizza, Great Plains Sauce & Dough Co. is an Ames institution.

Distance from Omaha : 170 miles

short road trips from omaha

Kansas City, Mo.

My family has had many great adventures to Kansas City, from wild rides at Worlds of Fun and Oceans of Fun, to hours on end spent at Science City and Nelson-Atkins Art Museum. Oh, and the barbecue is pretty tasty too!

Tip : The City Market is a lively year-round farmer's market that's free to explore. While there, stop at the Steamboat Arabia Museum, another free attraction.

Recommended hotel : For the location and the sweet rooftop pool, stay at Sheraton at Crown Center .

Distance from Omaha : 185 miles

short road trips from omaha

Honey Creek Resort, Iowa

Rathbun Lake is one of Iowa's largest man-made lakes, and nestled on its north shore is the family-friendly resort, Honey Creek Resort. During your stay, nearly every activity is included! That includes the indoor water park, the inflatable obstacle course on the lake, kayaks, SUPs, bikes, and daily children's activities.

Tip : While bile rentals are included, I highly recommend bringing your family's own bikes if you can. My kids struggled with the bikes provided.

Recommended hotel : Honey Creek Resort has both lodge and cabin options!

Distance from Omaha : 190 miles

short road trips from omaha

Excelsior Springs, Mo.

I found Excelsior Springs more of a couples or friends getaway than a family destination. Why? The gorgeous Elms Hotel has a fantastic spa with a grotto where you'll just want to relax the hours away.

The hotel is within walking distance of two great stops: A great barbecue joint that offers live music on some summer evenings and the excellent microbrewery, Dubious Claims Brewing Co.

Tip : There are a couple of wineries near Excelsior Springs, including Van Till Family Farm Winery. Order one of their artisan pizzas and a bottle of wine and grab a table on their covered patio for a low-key date.

Recommended hotel : You'll definietly want to stay at The Elms Hotel & Spa .

Distance from Omaha : 195 miles

short road trips from omaha

Valentine, Neb.

I have so many childhood memories of canoeing the Niobrara River in north-central Nebraska. This calm river flows through some scenic cliffs that will surprise you, plus the state's famous Smith Falls. I dare you to stick your head in the falls!

This is a popular river for tubers and can take on a bit of a rowdy, party atmosphere on some weekends. Which may or may not appeal to you.

Tip : Valentine is one of the closest cites to use as a homebase. Alternatively, outfitters often offer campsites along the river.

Looking for a campsite near Valentine?

Distance from Omaha : 200 miles

short road trips from omaha

Lawrence, Kan.

This college town has a lot going on. Whether you love music, good food, or U.S. history, you'll find what you're looking for in Lawrence.

Start your visit on Massachusetts Street, the city's most vibrant street full of restaurants and locally-owned shops. It's locally referred to as Mass Street. A few shops I recommend: The Raven Bookstore, Love Sea & Sky Institute, and Wonder Fair.

Traveling with kids? Include a stop at Watkins Museum of History (also located on Mass Street).

Tip : Don't miss out on the pie at Ladybird Diner. It's totally acceptable to order a slice at breakfast.

Distance from Omaha : 206 miles

short road trips from omaha

Okoboji, Iowa

A collection of interconnected lakes, you can have as relaxing or active of a getaway as you want. You want to waterslide into the lake at a waterfront bar? You can find it there. Want to sit on a beach by a firepit watching the sunset? There's a place for it.

Our favorite activities we did at Okoboji included a trip to historic Arnolds Park Amusement Park, a bike ride, kayaking, and playing at Dickinson Country Nature Center.

Tip: The Arnolds Park Funhouse Museum is home to the large wooden slide that used to be in the amusement park. You can take all the rides down you want if you have the day pass or just pay per ride.

Distance from Omaha : 210 miles

short road trips from omaha

Abilene, Kan.

Abilene, Kansas has its place in America’s Old West history: It’s the end of the Chisholm Trail, that led cattle from Texas to Kansas for years. Learn alll about it at Old Abilene Town, where reenactors will stage gunfights throughout the summer.

Explore the area's history and the city's most famous resident at Dickinson County Heritage Center and Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum.

Tip : If you're traveling with kids, be sure to ride the 1901 C.W. Parker Carousel at the heritage center! Each horse is hand-carved and hand-painted.

Distance from Omaha : 215 miles

short road trips from omaha

Waterloo, Iowa

Go to Waterloo for thrill rides, stay for the good food. Waterloo is home to the ultra-popular Lost Island Water Park, as well as the just-opened Lost Island Theme Park (opened in 2022). You'll be too tired to visit both in one day, so I highly recommend a two-day ticket.

Try breakfast at the old-school diner, Morg's. For lunch or dinner, I suggest Basal Pizza in the downtown area. While downtown, be sure to take a stroll the paved path along the river called RiverWalk.

Distance from Omaha : 245 miles

short road trips from omaha

Fairfield, Iowa

Fairfield is an anomaly, and a quirky one at that. For a town of its size, it should not have so many great ethnic restaurants, nor as big of an art scene as it has, but it does. It has a lot to do with the university in town (Maharishi International University), but there's more to it.

You'll have to visit to see what I mean. While you're there, enjoy great food at Fairfield Food Cooperative, Fishback & Stephenson Cider House, and Lunchbox. And for a taste of the arts scene, visit ICON Gallery and Fairfield Art Immersion House (this one's mind-blowing).

If you enjoy hiking and bird watching, include a stop at Jefferson County Park!

short road trips from omaha

Clear Lake, Iowa

Clear Lake is best known for the Surf Ballroom, the last place Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens performed. Once you explore the music history of the ballroom, now a museum, you've got to hit the lake and one of several sandy beaches around it.

Time your visit for the Fourth of July for a small-town celebration you won't forget.

Tip : Want a lakeside dining option? Try PM Park. We had a delicious breakfast indoors and then returned later during our trip to have lunch at the outdoor tiki bar. Yes, tiki bar.

Distance from Omaha : 250 miles

short road trips from omaha

New Day Dairy GuestBarn (Iowa)

For a unique getaway, head to Clarksville, Iowa, and stay a night or at a dairy farm. You'll get to tour the dairy and if you're up for it, you can take the Dairy Farmer Challenge (which involves both cute calves and shoveling cow poop).

Tip : Make it a weekend and add a visit to nearby Hawkeye Buffalo Ranch to feed bison and Rector Llamas to hike with a llama.

Distance from Omaha : 260 miles

short road trips from omaha

Lucas, Kan.

Lucas earns the title of oddest road trip destination on this list, and I say that affectionately. It's a weird little town filled with more art by self-taught artists than you can imagine possible.

Must-see places include Bowl Plaza (the public restroom building is shaped like a toilet), Garden of Eden, Deeble House and Garden of Isis. They're weird creations, but in a good way.

Get the background on the artiss who created the aforementioned places and see even more bizarrely beautiful artwork at Grass Roots Arts Center.

Distance from Omaha : 280 miles

short road trips from omaha

Wichita, Kan.

This large city in Kansas is full of surprises, from the exciting children's garden at Botanica Wichita to the amazing animal encounters at Tanganyika Wildlife Park. I've made a long list of recommendations for things to do in Wichita, including my favorite restaurants and shops !

Tip : Make plans to watch the lighting of the Keeper of the Plains. This nightly program is awe-inspiring and free.

Distance from Omaha : 300 miles

short road trips from omaha

Quad Cities (Iowa & Illinois)

Located along the Mississippi River and split between Iowa and Illinois, the Quad Cities are a getaway for families. We visited on a particularly rainy weekend, so we spent a fun weekend indoors at Putnam Museum and Science Center, the Family Museum, the John Deere Pavilion, and Figge Art Museum, which has a wonderful space for hands-on art activities for kids.

Tip : There’s a surprising amount of hands-on opportunities at the hidden gem, Fryxell Geology Museum, in Rock Island, Ill. And, bonus, it's free.

Recommended hotel : We've stayed at a few hotels in the Quad Cities. My favorite was the Element in Moline, Ill . I'm a sucker for exposed brick in rooms, but it had a pretty central location to the places we wanted to visit.

short road trips from omaha

Lake Of the Ozarks, Mo.

Lake of the Ozarks is a giant, man-made reservoir in Central Missouri, and there's more than one place to pick as your home base to explore the area.

My home base for exploring the region was Osage Beach, which put my family near attractions like Bridal Cave and Ha Ha Tonka State Park, as well as plenty of restaurants.

Our hotel, Margaritaville Lake Resort , was lakeside - yay! But for rainy weather, we had the Jolly Mon Indoor Waterpark connected to the hotel to keep the kids happy.

Distance from Omaha : 330 miles

short road trips from omaha

Decorah, Iowa

As much as I want to tell you all to go to Decorah for the outdoor experiences, the awesome dining there almost trumps the outdoors. I know!

OK, first the outdoors. Bike, climb a little waterfall, or kayak down one of the most scenic rivers in the Midwest. For food, get a taste of the Norwegian cuisine the city is known for at Ruby's or have delicious wood-fired pizza on a farm where the ingredients were grown and raised (experience it at called Luna Valley Farm).

Tip : Decorah is home to microbreweries that bring in beer aficionados from around the Midwest, including Toppling Goliath. I particularly enjoyed having a beer after a long bike ride at Pulpit Rock Brewing Co.

Recommended hotel : I was on a girl's trip to Decorah, and we stayed at Fairfield Inn & Suites . It was a good location for us, but not within walking distance to anything.

Distance from Omaha : 335 miles

short road trips from omaha

Allamakee County, Iowa

Allamakee County is right in the heart of the Driftless Region - of those regions you never hear of until you’re in it and then you wonder why it’s so unknown. It’s a beautiful region of the Midwest, and in Iowa.

If you want to hike and take in the views, head to Effigy Mounds National Monument or Yellow River State Forest, both in Harpers Ferry.

Stay the night in a cabin at Upper Iowa Resort in Dorchester. It has its own kayak launch into the Upper Iowa River and a lake for swimming, plus it's ridiculously scenic there.

Distance from Omaha : 350 miles

short road trips from omaha

Minneapolis & St. Paul, Minn.

If all my destinations could be as bike-friendly as the Twin Cities, I'd be a happy mama. One memorable place to bike around the park at Minnehaha Falls. Indoor fun includes Can Can Wonderland, Science Museum of Minnesota, and the hidden gem, the Bakken Museum.

Oh, and there's a little place called Mall of America. Perhaps you've heard of it.

Tip : One of my all-time favorite brewery experiences was at Surly Brewing Co, where we had dinner and beer with friends. The large brewery is surprisingly family-friendly and if the weather is nice, you can enjoy the immense patio and green space.

Distance from Omaha : 375 miles

short road trips from omaha

Branson, Mo.

Live music and food are often associated with Branson, Missouri, but there’s a lot more to see and things to do when you’re there. The city has fun attractions like Silver Dollar City and The Shepherd of the Hills.

And restaurants! You will overeat in Branson, and that's OK. Kids will enjoy Dolly Parton's Stampede and Dinner and will be amazed by the size of the pancakes at Billy Gail's.

Branson also has hundreds of hotels for every budget.

Tip : Because there are so many attractions vying for tourists, you can get some great ticket deals! Check ticketing sites like tiquets.com and viator.com before you go and while you're there.

Distance from Omaha : 394 miles

short road trips from omaha

Bentonville, Ark.

"Go for the mountain biking. Stay for the art." Tucked in the Ozark Mountains of Arksanas, Bentonville will surprise you with all that it offers. If you enjoy outdoor adventures, this is your place (it doesn't even matter your skill level)! Your first stop should be Coler Mountain Bike Preserev.

But, the arts & culture scene is equally a draw. World-class museums like Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art are a draw, as is smaller gems like Museum of Native American History. Both are free, too!

Tip : Plan a little time to stroll around Bentonville's downtown. The storefronts are colorful and charming, and the shopping is fantastic.

Distance from Omaha : 395 miles

short road trips from omaha

Fort Robinson State Park, Neb.

A fun place to experience the west without leaving Nebraska, Fort Robinson has trail rides, jeep rides, and stagecoach rides, plus a chance to do a chuckwagon dinner or watch a rodeo.

Tip : Plan ahead if you want to stay at the state park. Their lodging fills up fairly quickly so you'll want to reserve your accommodations early.

Distance from Omaha : 460 miles

short road trips from omaha

Hot Springs, S.D.

Perhaps you remember old family trips to Mount Rushmore, with a stop at Evans Plunge, the indoor water park that uses mineral water from nearby thermal springs. It's still open after all those years (with several updates) in Hot Springs!

Hot Springs is a less touristy stop in the southern Black Hills. Nearby, visit Mammoth Site is a must-visit.

Tip : Hot Springs is a short drive from two beautiful parks, Wind Cave National Park (10 miles away) and Custer State Park (20 miles away). Don't skip Sylvan Lake and the begging burros at Custer!

Recomomended hotel : Check out Hills Inn . Great location, and a budget-friendly motel option. And my kids liked the free donuts at breakfast.

Distance from Omaha : 490 miles

short road trips from omaha

Mount Rushmore Road Trip

It's the quintessential summer experience: Road trip to Mount Rushmore. Head straight there or make stops along the way, as we did on our exciting western Nebraska and South Dakota road trip.

We explored everything from the fascinating Toadstool Geological Park in Nebraska to Reptile Gardens in Rapid City. Other stops on this road trip included Wall Drug, Badlands National Park, Mammoth Site, Chadron State Park, and Fort Robinson. It's a long trip and the distance below doesn't factor in the extra stops.

Tip : Everyone has to stop at Wall Drug, if only for the photo ops, right? While you're there, don't forget to order one of their fresh donuts.

Hotel recommendation : We opted to stay in Rapid City at the Comfort Inn & Suites since there was a lot we wantd to do in Rapid City. But if you're main intention is visiting the monument, check out this list of awesome hotels near Mount Rushmore .

Distance from Omaha : 545 miles

25 Perfect Day Trips from Omaha You Haven’t Thought Of Yet

' src=

I actually really love road trips.  Sure, they are a lot harder with young kids (read my “ Survival Guide to Roadtripping With a Toddler ) but I still love grabbing my Red Vines (yes, I AM a Red Vines family- fight me!) and playing car games (a current fave with my 4 year old is Eye Spy).  I also may or may not be known to make mix cds (well, playlists nowadays) that go with the theme or location of our trip.

Yup, I told you I nerd out for road trips!

And as a born and raised Omahan, I’ve come to find that there are actually quite a lot of really great day trips from Omaha.  Now, “Day Trips” is a bit subjective, isn’t it?  I personally consider anything around the 2ish hour (one way) a decent “Day Trip” distance.  However, some people may only want to travel 30 minutes.

So, I’ve compiled an extensive list for you to decide what kind of day trip from Omaha to cross off your list ranging from just out our backdoor to the corners of our Cornhusker state.

Less Than An Hour from Omaha Day Trips

(Approx 30 Minutes from Omaha)

mahoney state park activities

If you’ve been around this site for a while, then you know how much I love Mahoney.  It is THE perfect day trip from Omaha!!!  Read My Ultimate Guide to Mahoney State Park here.

  • It’s close to home
  • Has TONS of stuff to do
  • Great in all seasons
  • Makes for a perfect Omaha Staycation

In the winter, the HUGE indoor playground is perfect for getting rid of cabin fever (they also have a ton to do at the activity cente r)

It’s great as a date day option, too with the zipline course, rock climbing, paddle boats, and more.

Council Bluffs

(Approximately 20 minutes from Omaha)

Look, I know us Omahans give Council Tucky a hard time, but it’s all in jest.  There are actually quite a few things that are worth crossing the bridge for!

If you are looking at a day trip, the Casinos may not be Vegas, but it’s still fun to escape for a bit and pretend like you are on the strip.

The Union Pacific Railroad Museum is also a hit with kids.

And don’t forget about the “Squirrel Cage” museum.  I know it doesn’t sound fascinating, but seriously, give it a chance!

Loess Hills

(Approximately 30-40 minutes from Omaha)

This just might be one of my favorite day trips from Omaha.  The Loess Hills are actually also right across the river on the Iowa side and spans a good distance.

Hitchcock Nature Center

Just 30-40 minutes from Omaha is the Hitchcock Nature Center.  If you want to escape the city and go out for a great hike in some really beautiful trails, this is where you should head.  In fact, we even did a really fun snowshoe hike here in the winter one year.

Loess Hills Lavender Farm (approx 1 hour from Omaha)

If you’ve never seen a Lavendar field in bloom (best in late June-early July), it is truly beautiful (and fragrant!) But even if you can’t get there during the bloom, you can still enjoy the farm for other fun events such as “Lavenderstock” or go for High Tea.

No, Omaha is not the up and coming Breckenridge of hot skiing destinations, but here’s why I personally think you should go skiing at Mt. Crescent instead anyways!

Wildlife Safari/ Zoofari

(Approximate 40 minutes from Omaha)

short road trips from omaha

This has become an annual summer activity for our family and a fantastic day trip from Omaha.  Us Omahans LOVE our Zoo (here’s 10 tips on how to get the most of your Omaha Zoo Day ) but the Wildlife Safari is a great spin on that.  Drive around from the comfort of your car as if you were on, well, a safari! There are a few pit stops along the way where you can get out, do a hike, pet some goats, get some food, and more.  Personally, I like the Pelicans, they always seem so cheeky! They’ll happily go sit in the middle of the road and just stare at you as if to taunt you that you can’t move! The buffalo area is also a really stunning section of the park as well to get up so close to the giants.

(Approximately 30-60 minutes pending which Vineyard)

Omaha is quickly getting known for all of their breweries in the area, but that doesn’t mean we should write off Omaha Vineyards just yet. There are actually quite a few within an hour of Omaha.

Platte State Park

(Approximately 30 minutes from Omaha)

Platte State Park Waterfall

Many people go to Mahoney because of all the activities there are to do, but Platte State Park is the better choice (in my opinion) if you are looking at some great hiking.  Ever since I was a kid, every summer we would hike through Platte and go “Mud Stomping” in the streams.  To this day, I still continue that tradition with my own kiddos!  There is also the lookout tower, horseback riding, and plenty of things to do at Platte State Park.

Sunflower Fields

Nebraska sunflower fields

The new annual “Sunflower Festival” in Valley at the Nelson Produce Farms is an absolute Nebraska Travel Bucketlist now!  Not only is it absolutely stunning, but it is a blast! We had so much fun walking through the Sunflower Maze as the blooms peered down on us from above!  There was even a fun little train for the kids to ride and a U-Pick produce section!

Read All About My Experience at the Nebraska Sunflower Festival Here.

Fort Atkinson State Historical Park

(Approximately 25 minutes from Omaha)

How is this such a hidden gem!? If you live in Omaha and haven’t made a day trip out here, put it on your list.  If you can get there on a living historical day, you are in for a treat.  Several times throughout the summer they will do live demonstrations where people are dressed in time period clothing and you get to step back in time for a day.

Chocolate Taste Testing at Bakers

We took a day trip from Omaha to Bakers Chocolate Factory in Greenwood and loved it!  There are talks in the work about them having a viewing room where you get to see all the yummy chocolates being made in front of your own eyes.  But until then, enjoy Nebraska’s largest candy outlet.  But whatever you do, don’t skimp on their freshly made counter.  I still dream about those dark chocolate coated caramel salted toffees and all the different kinds of clusters!!! YUUUM!!!

If you haven’t figure it out yet, I have a young boy.  What do little boys love? TRAINS! That’s why we love going to Two Rivers as a day trip. My Dad was also an employee with Union Pacific, so my family is a sucker for UP Trains!

Two Rivers is perfect for a day of fishing, splashing around in the lake (it’s perfect for young swimmers with a great, easy beach), grilling out, and just generally kicking back.  Plus, if you’ve ever wanted to spend the night in a train caboose , here’s your chance!!!

(Approximately 45 minutes from Omaha)

Obviously Lincoln needs to be on a Day Trips from Omaha list!!  A day at Morrill Hall is always enlightening for all ages, an evening at the Haymarket is always a good time, and if you haven’t visited the Sunken Gardens yet, you are missing out on yet another (not so) hidden gem!

short road trips from omaha

If you can’t tell, a common theme about great places to go near Omaha are actually a lot of the state parks!  This one is a real treat though in the fall months if you are looking for stunning fall foliage!  However, even if you can’t get there in the Autumn, there is plenty to do here to make it a great day trip any other time as well.

(Approximately 1 Hour 15 minutes from Omaha)

Pawnee SRA Boating

Not all of us have cabins by a lake.  However, I like Pawnee SRA because you can go boating, tubing, water skiing, grill out, and more just like if you had your own lake.  But, it’s not very crowded at all and actually became one of my favorite places for beach camping in Nebraska recently.

If you are looking for a chill, quiet, lake day, consider Pawnee SRA this summer.

(Approximately 2 hours from Omaha)

Many people don’t look at Des Moines as a day trip, but it easily could be one!  Des Moines has great farmer’s markets and a wonderful food and brew scene.  Also, if you didn’t know, Iowans take their state fair VERY seriously.  A day trip to Des Moines for the fair is a great option next summer as well. While you are there, stop into the botanical gardens, zoo, and plenty of museums to check out as well.

Weekend Trips From Omaha

While the remaining locations could still easily be done in a day trip from Omaha (and many of them I HAVE done as a day trip!) you can also make them into great weekend trips from Omaha as well.

Nebraska Ashfalls Rhino Barn

We combined the fascinating Ashfall Beds with our Niobrara weekend trip, but it can also be done just as a day trip in and of itself as well.  It was truly remarkable stepping back millions of years to see what Nebraska once was.  Nebraska hasn’t always been flat cornfields and the Ashfall Beds prove it with ancient, extinct fossils.  It’s really fun to see them actually at work still making new discoveries every day.

Kansas City

It’s no question if KC has a ton to offer.  As a kid, we made day trips to Worlds of Fun yearly!  As an adult, I know plenty of friends who love going for a girl’s day to the Crowne Plaza for a day of shopping.  Going to a Royals game is another perfect day trip activity or if you are wanting to spend the weekend, take the family to Great Wolf Lodge

While anytime can be a good time to make a day trip to Kearney, around March to see the Sandhill Cranes is an absolutely magical Nebraska experience.  I truly believe that every Nebraskan needs to experience it even just once. Best time to go on a road trip from Omaha to Mount Rushmore

Mount Rushmore is open all year round and each season offers a unique Mount Rushmore experience. Fall is the best time to visit Mount Rushmore, with mild temperatures, low rainfall, and the stunning colors of the season that will elevate your experience here.

Weather in the winter can range from white-out blizzards to sunny days of 45 degrees Fahrenheit. The roads to Mount Rushmore are well maintained so it is accessible all year round, however, nearby attractions and hikes in nearby Black Hills National Forest may be inaccessible at this time of year.

Spring temperatures average between 55 and 60 degrees Fahrenheit, and see the snow starting to thaw. Bright sunny days give beautiful light to Mount Rushmore and fewer crowds make for a great visitor experience.

June is the peak of the severe weather season with almost daily thunderstorms, but July and August bring hot temperatures of between 59-79 degrees and bright sunny days. Summer is the most popular time of year to visit so expect big crowds!

From May to early August, the sculpture is illuminated, and a ceremony takes place in the evening to celebrate this fantastic attraction.

From Omaha: A 2-Day Road Trip to Western Nebraska

Western Nebraska

A Nebraska native, I hate to admit that in previous my 18+ years of living in Nebraska, I’ve barely left my little bubble of Omaha .  I moved away from Nebraska when I was 18 years old to see the world, and it wasn’t until I turned 30 that I finally wondered, what is it that Nebraska has to offer?  So I packed my bags and hit the open road heading to Western Nebraska with only one goal in mind.  To answer the question, “What is there to do in Nebraska”?

As it turns out, Nebraska has a lot to offer!  Driving from small town to small town and passing different Nebraska attractions, I finally realized how proud I am to be from the Midwest and what a special state Nebraska is.  While you won’t find New York City-style attractions, mountains, or beaches, you will find down-to-earth and friendly locals.  Rolling green hills kissing bright blue skies on the horizon.  Cows grazing, hay bales scattered throughout fields, and beauty in the most minute of scenes.  So buckle up because this trip to Western Nebraska is one for the books.  (And a must-do especially if you’re in Omaha!)

If you drive from Omaha to Western Nebraska the drive can seem long (7+ hours) and dull at times.  The key to a successful road trip through Nebraska is to break it up by stopping in small towns, seeing bizarre Nebraska tourist attractions, and taking the scenic way even if it means adding on more time.  Below you’ll find my exact road trip itinerary so that you can recreate it for yourself.

Getting from Omaha to Western Nebraska

To journey through Nebraska, you will definitely need a car.  If you’re flying into Omaha for this road trip, you’ll want to rent a car at the Omaha airport before continuing on.  I prefer to use Discover Cars to search for rental cars across multiple different companies.

Another option, and arguably a more fun option, would be to rent an RV.  By using RVshare , you can pick up an RV rental in Omaha and journey west.  Because the roads are wide open and there are tons of open spaces to park your RV for the night, this would be a great thing to try out in Nebraska.  Plus, the hotels in Western Nebraska aren’t too impressive, so you can have a completely different experience staying in an RV.  If this option interests you, check out this website to see where you can park your RV.

By the way, if you’re going to be spending time in Omaha before your road trip, make sure to check out…

A local’s guide to visiting omaha, nebraska, the best hotels in omaha, nebraska, day 1 – minden + broken bow + alliance, highlights:  pioneer village, sandhills journey, carhenge.

short road trips from omaha

As you begin your Nebraska road trip make sure to dress comfortably, the first day consists of a lot of driving until you reach Western Nebraska.  You’ll begin your journey by heading west towards Minden, a small town in Nebraska home to approximately 3,000 residents.  From Omaha, it will take approximately 2.5 hours until you reach Pioneer Village.

If you’re looking for road trip tips, make sure to check out…

  • 6 Solo Road Trip Tips, How to Have an Epic Road Trip When You’re Alone

Stop 1:  Pioneer Village – Minden, NE

short road trips from omaha

The Pioneer Village is a time warp of how America came to be.  Harold Warp began to create and build the village in 1953 to show younger generations our nation’s history.  This village is composed of 28 different buildings on 20 acres with a collection of 50,000+ artifacts.  As you move through the museum you learn about the history of transportation, how people got around in wagons, horseless carriages, cars, and finally planes.  You will learn about different ways in which people got their groceries, how people dressed, and even how houses changed from the 1800s to the 1900s.  There is a school to tour, a house to tour, a train station to tour, and more.  If you’re interested in learning about history, I highly recommend stopping here.  Expect to spend at least 2 hours to get through everything and more if you have the time.

Entrance to the museum is $14 for adults, $7 for kids, and free for children under 5.  There is no food or drinks sold in the village but food options nearby include Runza, Subway, and Pizza Hut.

Stop 2:  Sandhills Journey Scenic Byway – Beginning in Broken Bow, NE

From Minden, you’ll drive an hour and a half northwest to Broken Bow, Nebraska where you’ll begin the most beautiful drive in the state, the Sandhills Journey.  This journey is one of the most open and limitless landscapes in the nation.  The Nebraska Sandhills is a mix of grassy prairies and dunes covering the north and west part of Nebraska.  The dunes were created by strong winds during the last ice age.  Grassland plants began taking root in the sand but not trees; eventually, the grass stabilized the dunes which is what we see today.  While the soil is unsuitable for crops, ranching is popular in this area thanks to the invention of the American windmill and barbed wire.  This journey will take you from Broken Bow where you’ll find a tourist information center about the Sandhills to Alliance by Highway 2.  (Note that the Sandhills Journey truly begins in Grand Island and goes to Alliance, stretching 272 miles).

short road trips from omaha

As you drive on Highway 2 west towards Alliance, you’ll notice vast stretches of open land with cows grazing, tractors plowing by, and lush green hills that kiss the blue sky on the horizon.  The journey to Alliance is about 3 hours where you’ll drive on open roads passing through small towns along.  There are plenty of opportunities to turn off and admire the landscape or depending on the time of day, watch the sunset behind the horizon.  Take your time and enjoy this beautiful landscape, I highly recommend this drive even if it means you’ll be spending more time in the car.  After all, the Sandhills Journey is quite famous and draws a lot of people to the state each year.  It’s one of those things in Nebraska that should not be missed.

Stop 3:  Carhenge – Alliance, NE

After the 3+ hour journey through the Sandhills, you’ll pull into Alliance, Nebraska, population 8,000+.  At this point, you’ve driven nearly 7 hours and will more than likely be pulling into Alliance come nightfall.  I’d recommend staying for dinner and finding a hotel before beginning back on your journey west the next day.

While you’re in Alliance make it a priority to stop at Carhenge.  One of the most bizarre Nebraska sightseeing monuments is located in this small town and is built to resemble Stonehenge in England.  The sculpture was built by Jim Reinders, from Alliance, who currently lives in England and studied Stonehenge.  He built the sight in 1987 from vintage automobiles as a memorial to his father.  Since 2006 a tourist information center has been built outside of Carhenge where you can buy kitsch souvenirs and learn more about the sculpture.  Entrance to Carhenge is free and while there is a sign outside saying that it isn’t open at night, no gate or fence surrounds Carhenge giving you access at any time of the day.

If you’re planning to stay the night in Alliance and you’re looking for dinner suggestions I recommend the Mexican restaurant, Mi Ranchito.  For a hotel, the Holiday Inn Express .

Day 2 – Harrison + Gering + Bayard

Highlights:  toadstool geological park, scotts bluff national monument, chimney rock.

short road trips from omaha

Now that you’ve made it this far, on day two of your road trip, there are even more things to see in Western Nebraska than what you saw on day one.  Before leaving Alliance, make sure to check out Carhenge (mentioned above) if you didn’t see it the night before.  If you already saw Carhenge, then you’re ready to hit the open road!

Tip:  Before leaving stop at the grocery store Safeway to stock up on snacks and drinks!  At your next stop there will be outdoor picnic tables with grills, so if you don’t want to eat fast food, make sure to grab lunch as well.

From Alliance head northwest, about an hour and a half, until you reach Toadstool Geological Park and Campground.

Stop 1:  Toadstool Geological Park and Campground – Harrison, NE

Toadstool Geological Park is located in the Oglala National Grassland and named after its unusual rock formations resembling toadstools.  Originally the land was volcanic before a river cut through forming a valley.  This changed the land from semi-arid to plaine.  Seasonal floods and volcanic ash would add new sediments before the layers were finally exposed by wind and water erosion.  The toadstool like rock formations are created by wind and water, which erode the soft clay faster than the hard sandstone rock that caps it.  It’s believed that the park is 30 million+ years old and that the first human visitors would have been in the 1800s.

At Toadstool, there is an easy 1-mile hiking loop that you can follow which will take you through the park while pointing out fossils and other interesting things about the park.  There are also picnic benches and grills if you want to eat out of the car.  Lastly, there are free restrooms available as well.  Entrance to the park is $3, you put your cash in an envelope and stick it in a dropbox.  There will then be a piece of paper you can put inside your car to prove you’ve already paid.  If you want to camp overnight it will cost you $15.

Stop 2:  Scotts Bluff National Monument – Gering, NE

short road trips from omaha

Upon leaving Oglala National Grassland head south, approximately two hours, until you reach Scotts Bluff National Monument in Gering, Nebraska.  Once you’re here you’re about as west as you can get with Wyoming being only 30-minutes further west.  On a clear day, you can see Wyoming from the top of Scotts Bluff.

Of all of the cool things to do in Nebraska, Scotts Bluff National Monument is well known and should be high on your list.  It’s greatly recognized for the historic significance that it played due to its location along the Oregon Trail.  The 800-foot bluff was originally known as Me-a-pa-te, “hill that is hard to go around”.  Today you can enter the monument free of charge and drive to one of the many scenic lookout points at the top.  By choosing the “Oregon Trail Museum and Visitor Center” on your Google Maps, you’ll be able to walk part of the real Oregon trail, visit the visitor center, and drive to the top of the bluff.  Once you’re parked at the top, there are short and easy hiking trails around the bluff.

short road trips from omaha

After you’ve finished seeing Scotts Bluff, head into Gering and stop at the “fake town” created by one of Gering’s residents.  Tom, the creator of this town, has essentially built an entire fake street front of stores and shops.  You can find this bizarre and quirky street at 7th and S.  But please be respectful, it is Tom’s property and he asks that if you want to be shown around that you call him and ask permission.  His phone number can be found on signs near the gas station.

Stop 3:  Chimney Rock – Bayard, NE

Upon leaving Gering, head 30-minutes east where you’ll reach Chimney Rock.  Like Scotts Bluff, Chimney Rock also plays a significant role in history by being one of the main recognizable landmarks on the Oregon Trail.  By spotting Chimney Rock, pioneers knew that they were headed in the right direction.  You can drive up close to the rock for free, and there is a short hiking trail allowing you to get closer.

Near Chimney Rock there is also a souvenir and gift shop at the start of the road leading to Chimney Rock.  The area is called Pioneer Crossing and along with the souvenir/gift shop it has a campground, and a cabin to rent (from May-September).  Ice cream, milkshakes, and simple food such as hot dogs and hamburgers are all sold at the shop.  As mentioned, there’s also a small cabin you can rent for $60/night.  The cabin doesn’t have WiFi or a toilet (you’d have to use the shop for that), but it has an incredible view facing Chimney Rock.  You can find information on camping and renting a cabin here .

Once you’re done at Chimney Rock you have a couple of options as far as where you plan to stay the night.  if you want more time in Western Nebraska or don’t plan to go back to Omaha quite yet, I’d recommend heading back to Gering to stay the night.  Otherwise, if you want to tackle part of the 6+ hour journey home I’d recommend driving further east and staying the night in Ogallala.

If you’re planning to stay the night in Ogallala and you’re looking for dinner suggestions I recommend Urban Farmer Kitchen and Cocktails.  For a hotel, the Holiday Inn Express .

Essential Nebraska – What You Need & Need to Know About Visiting Nebraska

  • To easiest way to book hotels in Nebraska is through Booking.com or Expedia
  • My favorite platform for rental properties is VRBO
  • For car rentals, I recommend Discover Cars
  • To book a flight to Nebraska, I recommend Expedia or Skyscanner to compare options
  • For tours and activities in Nebraska, I recommend using Viator
  • Don’t forget a Nebraska guide book to help plan your travels
  • I recommend traveling with a reusable water bottle to cut down on plastic waste (and to keep your liquids cold)

Whether you visit Nebraska for your first time or you’re a Nebraska local, there are tons of things to see and do in this state that will amaze and entertain you.  Growing up in Omaha, I had no idea what lied in my own “backyard” and my only regret is that I didn’t explore it sooner.  When you visit Western Nebraska, you’ll learn about the rich history of the state and how America came to be America.  This two-day road trip is easy and cheap, and there is no reason that we shouldn’t be giving Western Nebraska the attention that it so clearly deserves.

Racing fans watch on at Chester

Chester mourns death of Hidden Law after serious injury follows victory

  • Charlie Appleby’s Epsom trial winner was a Derby contender
  • Colt suffered shattering injury after winning Chester Vase

An empty winner’s enclosure after the feature race was a miserable way to open Chester’s May Festival, after Charlie Appleby’s Hidden Law, who had just taken the Chester Vase by three lengths, had to be euthanised as the result of a serious injury suffered shortly after crossing the line in an incident that was also broadcast live on ITV4.

Appleby reported that Hidden Law had broken a fetlock after apparently taking a false step while William Buick, his rider, was pulling him up. “He fractured his leg, unfortunately,” Appleby said. “Passing the line was all OK but he’s just put in a false step after crossing the road.

“It’s just the force of it coming down on a false step, really, one of those freak accidents. It is very disappointing, I’m so sorry for His Highness Sheikh Mohammed [Hidden Law’s owner] and team Godolphin, to have a horse like him potentially coming through the ranks was exciting for everybody.

“He was on the right lead all the way around, picked up, switched leads, quickened, and just crossed the road there, he didn’t jump it but obviously had a look at it, and then when he’s landed, he’s put the wrong one down with the wrong bit of pressure. It’s no fault of the track.”

Buick, the reigning champion jockey on the Flat, was unseated from Hidden Law in the incident, but unhurt. “Will got up fine, which is the most important thing,” Appleby said. “He’s a bit shook up from it because it’s not a nice thing to happen.”

While Hidden Law’s injury was broadcast live by ITV Racing, many fans at the track were unaware of what had happened and gathered around the winner’s enclosure to welcome back a colt who had seemingly just established himself as a major contender for next month’s Derby at Epsom.

As the realisation slowly spread that there would be no presentation, the joy was noticeably sucked from the atmosphere at the track on one of the biggest days of its year.

Hidden Law’s injury occurred shortly after a road crossing that had been covered with a synthetic temporary surface, a process that takes place at other leading tracks with road crossings including Aintree and Epsom, but there was no apparent link between the injury and the location where it occurred.

“It can happen to a horse just running loose in a field,” the leading trainer John Gosden said on ITV Racing. “It’s not a very common occurrence but obviously with any athlete, you can have an injury of that nature, it can occur, and it has occurred here just after the finish line. You see it in football games, you see it in all kinds of sport. It is a risk of any sport, there’s a risk to having driven here today for three and a half hours, there are a lot of risks we take in life. This horse is racing and winning well but he’s obviously just changed legs pulling up there, put down incorrectly. The track is in absolutely pristine, perfect condition so it’s nothing to do with the surface of the track.”

Gosden added that racehorses are, by their nature, very difficult to treat when they suffer such a serious injury. “They are not very tolerant,” he said. “Someone with a broken leg will lie in bed with their leg extended for a while, horses don’t like that, they don’t like being confined.

“They like to roam free … so they’re not good patients. I’ve seen them in straps, suspended, years ago, that sometimes can work but you need a very docile horse to put up with it and racehorses by nature have a great deal of nervous energy.”

Arrest grabs attention in Ormonde

The Ormonde Stakes at Chester has many illustrious names on a roll of honour that stretches back to Quashed, the 1935 Oaks winner, who took the first running in 1936 a few weeks before an epic battle with Omaha in the Ascot Gold Cup that is remembered as one of the 20 th century’s greatest head-to-heads.

Brown Panther, who took the 2014 Irish St Leger later in the season, is the last subsequent Group One winner to win the Ormonde, but this year’s renewal includes several interesting runners with the potential to improve over staying trips this year.

Deauville Legend, fourth when favourite for last year’s Melbourne Cup, and Point Lonsdale, a regular at Group One level, will both attract plenty of support, but Arrest (3.40) , the beaten favourite in last year’s Derby and runner-up in the St Leger, has course form in the Chester Vase 12 months ago and should improve significantly for his return to action at Newbury last month.

Chester 1.30 Copper Knight finished last season out of form and did not offer much encouragement on his return to action at Beverley last month either, but has plunged in the weights as a result and is now 6lb below his last winning mark. At odds of around 14-1 from a useful draw in stall four, he could well be worth a speculative interest to rediscover his best form, at a track where he has already registered three wins.

Chester 2.05 Little form to work with in this two-year-olds’ maiden, but Rashabar and Passing Phase, who makes the trip from Jessica Harrington’s stable in Ireland, both showed something on their racecourse debuts. Marginal preference is for the Irish raider, with Tom Marquand – who rode Rashabar at Newbury last month – taking over in the saddle.

Chester 2.35 Having finished not far behind a subsequent Group One winner on both his starts as a juvenile, Never So Brave made short work of his field in a maiden at Thirsk last month and has been handed what looks to be a very lenient mark of 94 for his handicap debut here.

Chester 3.05 God’s Window, a 25-1 shot for the Derby, has obvious potential but Harper’s Ferry is in the Classic too, has done little wrong in his career to date and looks significantly over-priced at around 16-1.
