How do I set Preview as the PDF viewer in Safari, instead of Adobe Reader X?

I unfortunately have to use Adobe Reader X on my Mac.

In the past, I could set Preview as the default PDF viewer in Safari, but with Adobe Reader X, that option is disabled!

I already know that I can delete Adobe’s plug-in, but I’m pretty sure it will just come back the next time the damn thing auto-updates.

The “right” way is to change that setting, which (at least in previous versions) maintained the setting through updates. How do I do it?

It turns out this is a known issue. Adobe has a knowledge base article that says:

Known issues Reader's Preferences > Internet > Display PDF in Browser is always dimmed To disable Safari integration, delete the AdobePDFViewer.plugin from /Library/Internet Plug-ins To reenable Safari integration, rerun the installer over the current installation. Start the Acrobat/Reader X installer from the original media, and then follow the onscreen prompts to complete the installation.

Hopefully the plug-in doesn’t come back the next time Reader updates.

What I did was install a later version to reset it using the following steps:

1) Remover Acrobat Reader X 2) Delete plug (AdobePDFViewer.plugin) found at /Library/Internet Plug-ins 3) Go to http://get.adobe.com/reader/ 4) Press "Choose a different version" under "Select your version of Mac OS:" 5) Select your operating system & language 6) Choose & download Reader 9.4 NOT Reader X 10.0.1 7) Install Reader 9.4 7.1) Say no to the extension for safari plug in 7.2) Say no to request to set as default 8) Reboot your system & preview should return to the default

Optional 9) I removed Reader 9.4 using the unistaller found in utilities and then removed any remaining folders left in applications (there was one labelled Adobe)

This question is already answered and a possible solution may be found in Adobe's knowledge base article as mentioned in @Nate's post.

However, a non-destructive method to disable Adobe Reader as PDF reader in Safari is to

• Create a new folder /Library/Internet Plug-Ins (disabled)/
• Move the file AdobePDFViewer.plugin-deactivated from /Library/Internet Plug-Ins to the newly created folder.

This way you don't have to reinstall Adobe Reader in case you change your mind later.

How to Save a Web Page as a PDF in Safari on the Mac

What to Know

• In Safari, open a web page and go to File > Export as PDF . Follow the on-screen prompts to name the file and select a storage location.
• Alternatively, press Command + P in Safari. Select the PDF drop-down menu, choose Save as PDF , and then select Save .
• Press Shift + Command + R in Safari to open the Reader . Saving a PDF in Reader downloads a cleaner-looking PDF.

It's easy to export a web page to a PDF file with the Apple Safari web browser on the Mac. When you save a web page to PDF, you can share it so that the information looks identical to how it appears on the website. All PDF files look the same on a computer, tablet , phone, or another device. PDFs are also an alternative to printing the web page .

How to Export a Web Page as a PDF in Safari

It takes a few clicks to convert a web page to a PDF file with Safari.

Open the web page you want to save to PDF.

Go to the File menu and choose Export as PDF .

In the window that appears, enter a name for the PDF file and choose where to save it.

Select Save to save the web page as a PDF.

How to Print a PDF From a Website in Safari

Another way to save a web page as a PDF file is to print the page to PDF.

This feature is available in most web browsers.

Navigate to the page you want to save.

The keyboard shortcut is Command + P .

Go to the lower-left corner of the print window and select the PDF drop-down arrow.

Reader isn't available for every website.

Navigate to the site you want to save.

Go to the View menu and choose Show Reader . Or, press Shift + Command + R on the keyboard. If the Show Reader option is gray, it isn't available for the current page.

To activate Reading Mode in earlier versions of Safari, select the three-line icon next to the URL.

Love reading books during work great features other apps don’t have!

This is my second app I tried for out loud reading because I love reading novels but I’m at work and need to use my hands to work and so far this app is fast easy to use and you can turn pages when you copy the website and past from the web because some out loud reading apps don’t have that feature with is a must because you don’t want to keep copying and pasting from the website because you can’t turn to the next page.

(Fixed!!) Getting Ads Despite Subscription and Other Issues

Update: The issues with the ads and login have been resolved, no more problems there. Just the random lagging or stopping still occurs fairly often. Thank u for all your hard work! —— I’m paying for the annual basic subscription for no ads, however it has suddenly started giving me ads even though I have 2 months left. Don’t like that there is no place within the app itself to review my subscription status/features, except for when an ad appears, there should be a dedicated option in the main menu where I can do this. Also reporting a problem through the app requires logging in, but trying to log in causes an error. Also frequently having issues where the reader will just randomly stop reading.

Love it for what it is but still problems

Love this and it does a great job I use it to read books online that aren’t lucky enough to have an audio version. The problems I have is that if it reads Tim’s it reads it as tim(aphas)(afes) and drops the plural and pronounces that weird aphes word it also reads “ as and(not end reads it as and) quote. So there are punctuation things that drive me crazy. And honesty it was doing this before but it always has issues with punctuation maybe this story has a lot of punctuation and plurals tbh at others haven’t had. I use it I like it it gets 4 stars cause of adds and punctuation issues. The adds are infuriating to me but it is what it is.

The Acrobat/Acrobat Reader plug-in for web browsers relies on the cross-platform plug-in architecture NPAPI, which had been supported by all major web browsers for over a decade. The following browsers have dropped support for NPAPI, and therefore Acrobat/Acrobat Reader plug-in does not work on these browsers anymore to display the PDF.

Internet Explorer

Internet Explorer 11 uses an ActiveX based plug-in. Follow the steps below to configure Internet Explorer to use the Acrobat/Acrobat Reader plugin for viewing PDFs:

Open Internet Explorer, and choose Tools > Manage Add-ons .

Under Add-on Types, select Toolbars and Extensions .

In the Show menu, select All Add-ons .

In the list of add-ons, select Adobe PDF Reader .

If you do not see the Adobe PDF Reader add-on, try the other options on the menu. For example, on some systems, the add-on appears when you select Run Without Permission.

Click the Enable or Disable button (it toggles depending on the status of the selected add-on):

Enable sets the Adobe PDF Reader add-on to open PDFs in the browser.

Disable turns off the add-on so it does not open PDFs in the browser.

Use Safari extensions on your Mac

Safari extensions enhance and customize the browsing experience on your Mac. Here's how to install them, uninstall them, or share them across devices.

Safari extensions add functionality to Safari, so you can explore the web the way you want. Extensions can show helpful information about a webpage, display news headlines, help you use your favorite services, change the appearance of webpages, and much more. Extensions are a great way to personalize your browsing experience.

Install extensions

Turn on extensions, turn off extensions, uninstall extensions, share extensions across devices.

Use the App Store to conveniently download and install Safari extensions. All extensions in the App Store are reviewed, signed, and hosted by Apple for your security, and they're automatically kept up to date.

Start by installing the latest macOS updates to make sure that Safari is up to date. You need Safari 12 or later to get Safari extensions from the App Store.

Open Safari and choose Safari > Safari Extensions from the menu bar.

The App Store opens to the Safari Extensions page. To download and install an extension, click Get or click the price. You might be asked to sign in with your Apple ID.

Click Install.

After the extension is installed, click Open and follow the onscreen instructions provided by the extension.

After installing an extension, follow these steps to turn it on.

Choose Safari > Settings (or Preferences).

Click Extensions.

Select the checkbox next to the extension's name. Learn what to do if you can't turn on extensions .

If you're browsing privately, or using a profile or web app

When browsing in a private window in macOS Sonoma or later, all extensions that require website access are turned off by default. To use an extension when browsing privately:

Choose Safari > Settings.

Select the extension in the sidebar, then select “Allow in Private Browsing” on the right.

Whether or not you're browsing privately, you can also restrict the extension's access to certain websites. Click the Edit Websites button to view the extension in Websites settings. From there you can allow access, deny access, or require that websites ask you for access.

When using Safari profiles , extensions for the default profile are managed in the main Extensions tab of Safari settings. Extensions for other profiles are managed in the Profiles tab, which has its own Extensions tab for each profile. By default, extensions are turned off for each new profile.

Choose Safari > Settings (or Preferences), then click Extensions.

To turn off an extension, deselect its checkbox.

If you can't determine what an extension does, or you don't expect to use it again, you should uninstall it.

To uninstall an extension, select the extension and click the Uninstall button.

Starting with macOS Ventura, iOS 16, and iPadOS 16, you can share extensions across your Mac, iPhone, and iPad:

On your Mac, open Safari and choose Safari > Settings, then click Extensions. Select “Share across devices” at the bottom of the window.

On your iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > Safari > Extensions, then turn on Share Across Devices.

To uninstall an extension from all devices, you must uninstall it on each device.

Safari no longer supports most web plug-ins. To load webpages more quickly, save energy, and strengthen security, Safari is optimized for content that uses the HTML5 web standard, which doesn't require a plug-in. To enhance and customize your browsing experience, use Safari extensions instead of web plug-ins.

Update 2023: Dark Reader for Safari 2.0 is available for macOS

You can now create your own colorful theme, enable native dark theme detection and manage a list of sites where the extension is enabled.

• Quit Safari.
• Open Safari again. Go to Settings... menu.
• Go to Extensions tab.
• If you see two Dark Reader instances, disable the one that has version 1.4.6 .
• Enable Dark Reader 2.0.0 .
• If you still see any issues, please restart the browser or the system, reinstall the app.
• Your settings from 1.4.6 will not be transferred to 2.0.0.
• The app will no longer work in macOS High Sierra 10.13.

Update 2021: Dark Reader for iOS is available in App Store

This version of Dark Reader works in all Apple devices that support iOS 15 or iPadOS 15. Install Dark Reader for iOS and iPadOS .

Known issues

• Extension doesn't work after install or update, doesn't show up in Safari Preferences or wrong version number is displayed — Quit Safari and open again.
• IFrames are not inverted — Safari has no API to determine the address of the web page, where the IFrame is hosted, when it has a different domain name.
• On some websites a dialog asking for credentials appears — Dynamic mode loads CSS files and images for analysis, but some websites require authentication to access these resources. Please use Filter mode for such websites.

This comes in handy for getting multiple things done at once, such as typing while catching up on a news article or having recipes read to you while you cook. Follow the steps below to get Safari to read to you on your MacBook or iPad .

Get Safari to read a webpage to you in OS X

1. Tap the Reader View icon in the browser bar. 

This will make Safari show you only the main website content. Otherwise, Safari will attempt to read every word on the page, including navigation menus and other details you don't need to hear.

2. Go to Edit > Speech > Start Speaking.

Safari will immediately start reading the content on the webpage. Unfortunately, there's no pause or speed controls available directly in Safari. However, you can customize the voice and speaking rate in the System Preferences app. Go to System Preferences > Dictation & Speech > Text to Speech to customize the voice you hear:

• Maybe the PDF is damaged, so the PDF will not open in Safari. Try accessing other PDF files and see if the problem still exists.
• All major browsers have built-in PDF readers, so you can copy and paste the PDF URL into Google Chrome, Firefox, or Edge to see if they will open it.

Please make sure you have installed the latest version of Safari. Since it is the default browser for Mac, you need to update macOS to update Safari.

• Go to System Settings > General > Software Update .

Once Reader officially exits beta, we intend to reprice Readwise/Reader for new subscribers thereafter. Pricing is really hard and complex so we candidly haven't figured out the exact plans yet. But regardless, we don't intend to increase pricing on existing full subscribers at that time. This means that if you subscribe while Reader is in beta, you'll get lifetime access for the price you are now paying.

Yes! Reader is available on iOS and Android as well as a local-first web app. The entire experience is cross-platform meaning all data is continuously synced between all your devices. Please note that “local-first web app” does not refer to a native app you install on your computer, but you can install the app as a Chrome app or with a Safari wrapper to get native-like experience.

Yes! You can import your existing read-it-later library from Instapaper, Pocket, and a handful of others. You can also import your existing RSS feeds from other feed readers using OPML.

Right now, you can think of Reader as another reading app that integrates with Readwise (albeit seamlessly because they share a database). Pretty great. So easy now to view citations! But it breaks Copilot's ability to read PDFs in Edge. :(

Improving content filtering in Manifest V3

Over the past year, we have been actively involved in discussions with the vendors behind several content blocking extensions around ways to improve the MV3 extensions platform. Based on these discussions, many of which took place in the WebExtensions Community Group ( WECG ) in collaboration with other browsers, we have been able to ship significant improvements.

More static rulesets

Sets of filter rules are usually grouped into lists. For example, a more generic list could contain rules applicable to all users while a more specific list may hide location-specific content that only some users wish to block. Until recently, we allowed each extension to offer users a choice of 50 lists (or “static rulesets”), and for 10 of these to be enabled simultaneously. In discussions with the community, extension developers provided convincing evidence showing this was too low for certain use cases. After looking at the performance of the API in Chrome with these discussions in mind, we are now allowing up to 50 to be enabled simultaneously. (Notably, this is significantly higher than the limit of 20 requested in the WECG.) We also allow for 100 rulesets in total. This is shipping in Chrome 120 and increasing the limits is supported by both Firefox and Safari who both provided early input on this proposal.

More dynamic rules

Most rules are “static” and ship with each update to an extension. However, to support more frequent updates and user-defined rules, extensions can add rules dynamically too, without their developers having to upload a new version of the extension to the Chrome Web Store.

When an extension can dynamically modify requests in ways that were not checked during Chrome Web Store review, this exposes users to risks of phishing or data theft. For example a redirect rule could be misused to inject affiliate links without consent.

Consequently, we only allowed extensions to add up to 5,000 rules which encouraged using this functionality sparingly and made it easier for us to detect abuse.

However, developers from extensions including AdGuard and Adblock Plus performed their own analysis and shared data that a higher limit would allow for more up to date rules and for users with a higher number of custom lists to migrate to Manifest V3. In fact, AdGuard reported that more than 2600 changes are made to popular lists each week, and of the five percent of users using custom filter lists, one in four of those users have a combined total of more than 5,000 dynamic rules across them ( source ). AdGuard noted this as a significant challenge for migrating their extension to Manifest V3 and we heard similar feedback from other content blockers.

We determined that some filter rules, such as those with an action of block or allow , are much safer and are less likely to be abused. They also happen to make up the large majority of ad block filter rules. Based on this, I drafted and shared a proposal in the Web Extensions Community Group to define a set of rules that we consider lower risk and allow up to 30,000 of these. We still keep an upper limit to avoid performance regressions.

This proposal was supported in the Web Extensions Community Group so we implemented it. Starting with Chrome 121, the higher limit of 30,000 rules applies to safe DNR rules, which we are defining as rules with an action of block , allow , allowAllRequests or upgradeScheme .

Based on the data shared by AdGuard, between 98 and 99 percent of their rules should benefit from this higher limit. Any remaining rules are still supported and can be added within the existing limit.

This is available in Chrome as the MAX_NUMBER_OF_DYNAMIC_RULES constant. The rule limit for all other dynamic net request rules stays at 5,000.

Reduced ruleset size

In Chrome 118, we changed the default value for the isUrlFilterCaseSensitive field to false based on feedback from the community. This field controls if a rule that filters by URL is case sensitive, and we learned that most developers had a different default in their extension. Consequently, the value had to be set many times over. By making this change developers are able to achieve significant size reductions on their rulesets.

What’s next?

We are committed to continuing to invest in the declarativeNetRequest API so we can support as many use cases as possible, and look forward to continuing to work with the community. In particular, we’d like to thank members of the WECG for their engagement, including AdGuard for sharing a significant amount of the data that drove this work, and all browser vendors who have all been a major part of designing this API.

We will continue to review the limits we have in place to make adjustments where needed. To support this, we plan to share some of the data we collected as part of this work in the near future. Additionally, we are working on adding additional capabilities like the ability to match against response headers, which is a common request we’ve seen from PDF viewer extensions. In all cases, we’ll continue to communicate our work, and use the Web Extensions Community Group regularly as a place to discuss ideas and align on what we’d like to look at next.
