Top Romantic Things to Do in London (Even if it’s Not Valentine’s Day)

Whether you’re in the city with your partner for Valentine’s Day or just have something big to celebrate with them at any point of the year, here’s a list of fun, unique ideas of romantic things to do in London.

Find a new scent together

Scent can be a pretty sensual thing, so you do some perfume and/or cologne shopping together while you’re in London. Jo Malone has complimentary perfume consulting and combining in their London shops, or you could pop over to Harrods’ many boutiques for a luxe smelling test that will result in a bespoke scent for you and your partner.

Finally, you could go to super-Englishly  Penhaligon’s , which has TWO Royal Warrants, to get a personalised fragrance profile, all while enjoying tea, biscuits and champagne. How romantic. One of their fragrances is shown above.

Go for a romantic meal in London

It might be cliche, but you can turn a regular dinner into a romantic experience by going to the right place. Some romantic restaurants in London I recommend include…

Top Romantic Things to Do in London (Even if it's Not Valentine's Day) - romantic things to do in London

Duck and Waffle  (Bishopsgate) – incredible views from the 43rd floor, which is very dark and romantic in the evenings. It’s incredibly hard to get reservations here so exactly two months before the date you want to book, go on their site and get your spot. Yes, they go that fast!

Top Romantic Things to Do in London (Even if it's Not Valentine's Day) - romantic things to do in London

Campania and Jones   (Columbia Road) – this teeny Italian restaurant has Tuscan farmhouse-inspired interiors made even more beautiful when it’s lit by table top candles. The food here is some of the best Italian I’ve had in London.

Top Romantic Things to Do in London (Even if it's Not Valentine's Day) - romantic things to do in London

The Petersham (Covent Garden) – from the people who run Petersham Nurseries in Richmond (another very romantic spot but further out from central London) is The Petersham. They do creative Mediterranean cuisine with stunning leafy interiors and a romantic terrace for when the weather is agreeable..

If you’ve got my 3-Day London Itinerary you already have LOTS of other Jess-approved London restaurants to choose from.

Go to Ronnie Scott’s for some live jazz

If you like live jazz, go to London’s most famous jazz club, Ronnie Scott’s  (pictured above), for a romantic night of live music and nice cocktails. It’s been around since 1959, so there’s a ton of history in this place…

For something more off the beaten path and relaxed, head to Dalston Jazz Bar . It’s one of the best spots to see live jazz in east London and interestingly, they do not price their meals, you just pay what you think it’s worth!

Finally if you’re looking for more romantic things to do in London, book a table at the swanky The Wellesley’s Jazz Lounge where they host live jazz musicians on Friday and Saturday nights. The venue and vibe pays tribute to its history as the former home to the famous Pizza on the Park at Hyde Park Corner, where famous names like Amy Winehouse, Jamie Cullum and Barbara Cook used to be regular performers.

Book a spa day

A spa treatment is a romantic way to spend time together in London, and if you’re visiting in the wintertime, it’s a great treat after spending lots of time outdoors sightseeing.

Some of London best spas in London include The Bulgari Spa in Knightsbridge, Agua Spa at Sea Containers hotel (pictured above), and The Ned’s Barber and Parlour . The Ned is on the list of the best hotels with rooftop bars in London , btw.

You can sometimes get spa deals on Last-minute.com , just be sure to do your research to make sure it’s actually a good one— Tripadvisor should help.

Even if a spa treatment is out of the budget, just booking yourself into a hotel that has an indoor pool and some basic spa facilities that are free for guests to use will feel like a treat. Try the Montcalm East hotel .

Do a personal shopping experience

If you’re up to spending some money together on your romantic day in London, why not do a day of personal shopping? Imagine it– you both could be enjoying a glass of bubbles in a plush, private dressing room as you wait for your personal stylists to bring you clothes that should fit you like a glove. Why not wear your new threads out of the store for a night out on the town?

Some stores that offer personal shopping services are  Westfield Mall ,  Selfridges  (pictured above),  Reiss  or  Liberty London .

Upgrade your cinema and dinner experience

Don’t do the usual gross cinema + crappy restaurant after combo. A sexy alternative is the Soho Hotel’s  Sunday film club — for £45 per person you get a three-course meal or afternoon tea at their Refuel restaurant, and then get to watch the film of the week in their romantic, luxe movie theatre (shown above). I’ve done this and loved it.  The Courthouse Hotel also offers this, but without the food and with some bubbles.

Go for an alternative theatre show

If you want to do something a bit more culturally enriching (but also quirky) and far away from the chilly temps, then try these alternative theatre shows while you sip on a luscious cocktail. You’ll find all types of performances, from comedies and unusual storytelling to great musicals to cabaret performances, and countless other options.

Stimulate your senses with an immersive experience

London never disappoints, it doesn’t matter what crazy concept you come up with -London has it. Immersive experiences fall a bit into that crazy category, I mean, how many times have you thought of having a drink in prison? Or a cocktail infused escape room? Even being a part of famous shows like The Great Gatsby (pictured above), Sherlock, a western movie or a dinner at The Murder Express? Check this list with over 35 different ideas to try out . What better way to know how crazy your other half is?

Curl up at a cosy pub

For something relaxing and not terribly wallet-breaking, just finding a cosy pub nearby where your staying in London could be perfect. Curl up next to the fireplace on a comfy sofa with a pint of beer or glass of wine, and you’re sorted for your romantic evening together.

A small selection of my favourite cosy pubs around London include:

  • The Ten Bells (Spitalfields) – a great, sexy pub on the ground floor, but head upstairs to the “secret” cocktail bar for a more intimate setting (pictured above).
  • The Draper’s Arms (Angel) – relaxed neighbourhood pub with cosy decor and a chill vibe.
  • Windsor Castle (Notting Hill) – situated in a super old building, it’s got lots of small rooms and low ceilings, making it not only historic but also quite intimate.

No need to travel too far to get to a pub, however, find one near where you’re staying so you don’t have to travel far to get to it, that’s what the locals do.

Dine while you cruise down the Thames

Bateaux London  (pictured above) offers a beautiful British dinner along with live music and delicious drinks while you take in the stunning views of London. Or if you are looking for something a little more affordable then check Thames Dinner Cruise or City Cruises , offering different experiences like Jazz night, an Elvis tribute or even a Murder Mistery dinner, where you get to unfold the clues to find the killer.

Have a romantic picnic

If the weather’s decent while you’re in London, have yourself a luxurious, romantic picnic in one London’s many parks. You can pick up a ready-made hamper, which is essentially a really nice picnic basket, from places like Carluccio’s , or go for one from Fortnum and Mason if you really want to impress your date– they’re so gorgeous!

You can also order a picnic hamper from some London restaurants, check out this list . Or just make your own picnic by picking up some bits and bobs from a nearby shop. The great news is that you can break out the bubbles because London’s fairly lenient on their drinking in public laws…

Have a romantic drinking experience

There are loads of upscale drinks spots in London that are very sexy and romantic.

Top Romantic Things to Do in London (Even if it's Not Valentine's Day) - Romantic Bars to go to on a date

Have some really nice vino in the “caves” at Gordon’s Wine Bar .

Top Romantic Things to Do in London (Even if it's Not Valentine's Day) - Romantic Bars to go to on a date

Have a drink at Gong in The Shard for gorgeous views of central London.

Top Romantic Things to Do in London (Even if it's Not Valentine's Day) - Romantic Bars to go to on a date

Or go all out at speakeasy Blind Spot , which has delicious bespoke and signature cocktails.

Enjoy champagne and chocolate on the London Eye

Did you know you can actually book your own “pod” on the London Eye and have a private champagne and chocolate experience ? Yeah, ya can. That would be pretty romantic, with bubbles in hand, looking over all of London…

If you’re not up for the price tag of the private capsule, there are other options, not-so-private options that are actually pretty affordable.

Spend the day in Hyde Park

There are quite a few romantic things you can do in Hyde Park, even beyond having a lovely little picnic. A fun and cheap option is to hire Boris bikes and ride through the park together, or go a little further (and cheesier?) and  rent a row boat to row along the Serpentine . Oh, and a visit to the Rose Garden is a must for a romantic day…

Go for a walk in nature

If you or your partner are nature lovers then check the London Wetland Centre , this reservoir covers over 40 hectares where you’ll be able to see otters, numerous species of ducks and geese, and discover many species of birds that don’t exist anywhere else in London. The centre is fully wheelchair accessible.

Get some non-selfie photos together

There’s no better time to get some photos showing how much you love each other than when you’re in one of the most incredible cities in the world. Check our London Photo sessions services in partnership with our lovely photographer Ewa Horaczko. Plus, we got you 10% extra photos from your session, just insert Love and London in the “referred by” box when booking your session on Ewa’s site .

While London isn’t exactly known as the romance capital of the world (and for good reason – the King doesn’t exactly endorse PDA!), that doesn’t mean that there aren’t tons of things to do in London for couples and London date ideas, ranging from days at the park to late night museum events to cozy cinema experiences.

My first date with my now-husband was in London, as well as many dates after that, and considering I hate Paris (read more about why here ), traditionally known as the most romantic city in the world, I would go for romantic things to do in London every time.

Fun Things to Do in London for Couples who Like to Eat (aka everyone)

I’m not going to lie, my preferable date in London involves eating somehow.

Whether it’s breakfast buffets in the UK, lunch at a pub or dinner at a pizza restaurant, I’m all in for the food.

1. Have Afternoon Tea at Bea’s

Flowery tea pot and tea cups

Having afternoon tea in London is just an essential for any visitor, but when you have so many to choose from, it can be hard to decide.

I’ve been to a lot of different teas in the UK, but my favorite one for couples is Bea’s.

Bea’s has locations in Bloomsbury, St. Paul’s, and elsewhere, and while they are not the fanciest, they are still really nice and good food.

I prefer this type of atmosphere for a London date that’s a bit more casual rather than spending your entire paycheck at the Ritz anyway.

🛎 Still looking for somewhere to stay in London?

My favorite hotel in London for all visitors is the Strand Palace ( click here to check prices ). ⭐⭐⭐⭐

2. Enjoy a Pub Lunch

romantic day trip london

There’s nothing more quintessentially London than a pub lunch.

It’s a great way to get to know someone, sitting around and talking with them for hours on end while a cozy fire roars next to you and you chow down on some British classics.

My one tip with finding a pub for a romantic date in London is to go for ones that are darker and cozy rather than chain pubs that tend to be a bit glaring.

Go for something with history, like the Mayflower in Rotherhide .

IMPORTANT: are you coming to the UK from abroad?

In case you’re reading this from outside the UK and will be a foreign visitor here, you need to know these 2 things to stay safe and save money.

  • Travel insurance – you need it when going overseas! I use this site to get the best quotes and purchase my packages from. Do not skip this – having medical coverage abroad as well as other coverage in case of missed flights, lost luggage, etc is essential. As I said, I have never gone wrong using this site .
  • International debit cards without fees – do not get stuck paying extortionate foreign fees when using your card abroad (and the UK is almost all card these days). I use the Wise debit and travel card which you can apply and learn more about here .

3. Attend a Chocolate Making Class: fun activities in London for couples

romantic day trip london

I haven’t met too many couples in my life who don’t like chocolate, so I feel safe to advise on a chocolate making class as a great food-inspired thing to do as a couple in London town.

For the ultimate in chocolate making, do a workshop at the Chocolate Museum so you won’t be able to escape from this delectable treat.

You can also often find a lot of chocolate making experiences on sites like Last Minute and Virgin Experiences, meaning that you could give this as a gift to your loved one for a special occasion and use it at a later date.

4. Eat Your Way around Borough Market

Borough Market sign

If you don’t want or need a set schedule, but do want some delicious food, spend the afternoon browsing the stalls in Borough Market and eating on the go as you wander around and take in all of the sights and smells.

Borough Market is London’s leading street food market and in addition to selling fresh food, also sells ready to eat meals that cater to the visitor who wants to enjoy a snack or their lunch as they’re walking around.

There are also regular demonstrations on at Borough Market in nicer weather, so you can both learn how to make delicious meals at home.

5. Go out for Ice Cream

romantic day trip london

My husband took me to get milkshakes on one of our first dates, which was basically the way straight to my heart because despite my lactose intolerance, I love a milkshake.

While this one won’t necessarily work as well in the depths of winter, give it until summer time and then spend a sunny evening at somewhere like Ed’s Easy Diner enjoying gigantic Oreo milkshakes and reminiscing on favorite childhood memories.

6. Eat at a Romantic Restaurant

romantic day trip london

Of course, sometimes you just want to go to a proper dinner – not ice cream, not a pub, not a food making class.

And that’s perfectly fine, because London has you absolutely covered with both family-friendly and fine dining restaurants to choose from.

7. Have drinks on a Rooftop Bar

romantic day trip london

You wouldn’t be on a romantic date in London without enjoying some time on a rooftop bar, would you?

Well, maybe you would but I wouldn’t recommend leaving this option off the table.

In good weather, there’s nothing more enchanting than sitting on a rooftop adorned with fairy lights watching the city twinkle while indulging in a perfectly blended drink.

It’s a great way to finish off a night after dinner, or to start the night before you head to your dinner reservation or other activity.

Or, of course, you can just spend the whole night chatting and trying out the different cocktail combinations.

Check out the Sky Pod Bar as a great option.

Active Things to Do in London for Couples

If you’re one of those adorably active couples who just like to workout together and skip hand and hand through a field of daisies, well I both envy you and also have a list of great active things for couples to do in London.

They range from walking to skating to rowing to escaping (more on that in a minute), but they’ll keep you on your feet and laughing together as you explore the world’s most amazing city.

8. Walk hand in hand through Southbank

romantic day trip london

Known as Southbank because it’s the stretch on the south of the River Thames, Southbank is a great place to go for a stroll together or even a jog if you’re up for that.

As you run along, you’ll pass cultural icons like the National Theatre , shops and restaurants, the London Eye and eventually you’ll be able to spot Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament.

This is very much a city atmosphere, not “outdoorsy” as such, but you can definitely keep active along the Southbank.

9. Escape Game

Who doesn’t love an Escape Game?

While it might not be active in the sense that you’re completing a marathon, you’ll be busy running around trying to solve puzzles and work together in ways you haven’t had to before.

I wouldn’t recommend escape games for a first date in London because it’s a lot of pressure and who needs more of that on a first date, but for a future date or with your established significant other who isn’t going to break up with you once they realize you’re a total idiot when it comes to solving puzzles, go for it!

For some of the best ones, check out Escape London .

10. Go Kayaking in Camden Lock: fun things to do in London for couples

romantic day trip london

Picture this.

You’re floating along in your kayak, lazily paddling your way through a beautiful waterway surrounded by trees and people jogging, biking or walking on the pavement above.

This is Camden Lock , and while you can bike or jog on the trail, you can also take to the water in a kayak and see it from a whole new point of view.

This is a great thing for couples to do in London who want to do something a bit off the beaten path while still being in the city.

11. Ice Skating in Winter

Two girls ice skating one with an upset face

If you’re heading to London in the winter , you have to the traditional date night idea of taking your loved one ice skating!

There are rinks set up all around the city, so it’s simply a matter of finding one that suits your tastes.

We prefer to skate at Somerset House for its beautiful location.

If you really want to lay it on thick, pretend that you can’t skate very well (or simply be your natural self if you indeed can’t) and let your date help pick you up and teach you how to put one foot in front of the other.

Everyone say, “Awww!”

12. Hire a Pedalo in Hyde Park

romantic day trip london

Hyde Park is a great place for couples to relax, but it’s also a wonderful place to burn some calories!

Hire a pedalo, which is a boat that you pedal, to take out onto the Serpentine Lake in the middle of Hyde park.

On a gorgeous summer’s day, this is all the rage and you can peddle as much as you want to get around the lake as fast as you can, or you can simply pick a spot on the water and let the water bob up and down around you as you do some people-watching.

One word of warning, though: the last time I rented a pedalo, I got absolutely covered in bird poop from above, so bring a change of clothes in case you’re preparing for a fancy night out!

13. Ride a bike through Olympic village

romantic day trip london

London encourages bike riding throughout the city with the rental “Boris bikes,” now owned by Santander, that you can find throughout the city.

While I wouldn’t recommend going on a date in London where you dart and weave your way through dangerous traffic with your loved one, if you head out to the Olympic Village in East London, there is plenty of room to ride without causing harm to yourself or others, and you can stop off and see some of the Olympic buildings used in London in 2012.

This is great for sports loving couples in London who want to both be sporty and check out sporting event history.

14. Go bowling

romantic day trip london

While, sure, bowling might not be the most “London” idea for a date, there will always be something romantic about a bowling date in London and you should know there are some bowling alleys ready for you and your date to strike (but hopefully not strike out).

We went bowling on my first date with my husband, in addition to loads of other things, and while I don’t remember who won, I do remember that it was a nice way to get to know each other while also having something else to do so we weren’t too intensely staring into each other’s eyes.

Of course, bowling shoes weren’t included in my essential London packing list , but no worries, you can rent them at the alley.

15. Spend time at London Zoo

Girl feeding Giraffe mint at London Zoo

For animal loving couples in London, one of the most romantic things to do can be to spend an afternoon at London Zoo .

Nestled just next to Regent’s Park, the London Zoo has some lovely animals including giraffes, sloths, and some monkeys.

If you’re worried about animal welfare, know that London Zoo and its sister zoo, Whipsnade Zoo, are dedicated to conservation and the best quality of life for the animals in their care.

16. London Dungeon

romantic day trip london

Okay, I’m going to recommend the London Dungeons as an active thing for couples to do in London only because I feel like you spend a lot of time hiding and jumping as you wind your way through this interactive experience.

The London Dungeon isn’t necessarily a historical site – it’s more of a touristy entertainment site that does teach you some things about what life would have been like for London residents and prisoners back in “the day.”

Particularly around Halloween, this is a great place to take a date in London if you know they like horror movies and being scared.

Otherwise, stick to something tamer!

Relaxing Romantic Things to Do in London

It doesn’t always have to be go-go-go, even when you are in a bustling city.

Instead, you can take a step back and relax with the one you love the most with these relaxing things to do for couples in London.

17. Watch the Sunset from Primrose Hill: couple activities in London

People sitting at Primrose Hill looking over London

Primrose Hill is my favorite spot in all of London.

Sitting adjacent to Regent’s Park , you can climb up it and sit on the hill and overlook part of the London skyline.

It’s such a cool atmosphere and really chilled out.

People are having picnics, just sitting and talking, or further down the hill, running around and maybe kicking a ball back and forth.

For your relaxing evening out, plan to catch the sunset from here.

You won’t want to miss it.

18. Enjoy the Views in St. James Park

romantic day trip london

Right across from Buckingham Palace, St. James Park is an amazing London park to relax in because of the picturesque views and fantastic location in central London.

Walk across the quaint bridge to get gorgeous shots of one of London’s most iconic landmarks, or just sit on a bench and watch kids feed the birds.

This park does tend to be busier than ones like Hyde Park because it’s much smaller, but I still think it’s a really relaxing thing to do in London when you have a free afternoon.

19. Listen to the Sounds of Jazz at a Jazz Club

Female with grey hat on playing guitar

London has plenty of jazz clubs where you can sit back, relax and listen to the sounds of jazz float through the room.

These are spread around the city, but you’ll find a particular concentration of them in Soho.

Oh, and did we mention that some Pizza Express restaurants now have a jazz club attached?

Literally you can sit and eat pizza with your partner while in a Jazz Club.

Yes, please.

20. BBC Proms

romantic day trip london

Every summer, the BBC’s premier classical music concerts take place at Royal Albert Hall, and they’re known as “the Proms.”

Now, this isn’t an American style prom with awkward music and chaperones, but instead a swanky event with wonderfully trained musicians showing off their skills.

The Royal Albert Hall is a gorgeous venue as it is, and the Proms bring them to that next level of complete sophisticated.

Get tickets to the Proms to let yourself be carried away by the sounds of classical music so you can drift off to sleep last night with pleasant sounds in your head rather than the roar of the London Underground.

Romantic Things to Do in London for Culture Lovers

Just because you’re hanging out with your significant other in London doesn’t mean you need to miss all the culture and history!

Incorporate it into your time spent together as a couple in London and soon you’ll be annoying each other with all of the fun facts you’ve learned!

21. Visit Buckingham Palace

Lots of people in front of Buckingham Palace

Is there anything better than actually stepping foot inside the Queen’s palace while trying to impress your other half?

In the summer months, certain parts of Buckingham Palace is open to visitors while Queenie is away, and you should definitely consider stopping by here for some royal history and window shopping for the gold-plated furniture you’ll have in your first house together.

Make sure to purchase tickets ahead of time as the tickets have times on them and are prone to booking up.

When I was a study abroad student in London , this was the highlight of my semester.

22. Look at Art at the National Gallery

The National Gallery in London from the side

Whether you’re an art guru or just like to stare quizzically at paintings, you can explore a whole treasure trove of British art at the National Gallery.

Situated overlooking Trafalgar Square, just walking distance from Big Ben, this is a wonderful place to spend a few hours in a morning or afternoon.

Not to mention, if you visit the National Gallery as a couple, you’ll be pleased to know that there is a wonderful café for you to hang out and chat in after your visit to talk about what you’ve seen and plan your future adventures.

23. Hampton Court Palace

Statue in front of Hampton Court Palace

Ready for a bit of an adventure?

Travel to Hampton Court Palace by riverboat on the Thames and soon you’ll be exploring the grounds of this gorgeous palace, walking hand-in-hand with your own prince or princess.

Not only can you explore the inside and see the historical exhibits set up in the rooms, but you can also explore the large grounds and the vegetable and flower garden that is lovingly tended to.

Oh, also it might be haunted so you know – nothing says romantic like running way from ghosts together!

24. Crown Jewels at the Tower of London

romantic day trip london

While I wouldn’t consider the Tower of London itself particularly a romantic thing to do in London (learning about torture may turn you off a bit), I do think it’s worth a visit with your significant other to spend time in the room with the Queen’s crown jewels on display.

These are the real deal – the tableware, crown, and other jewelry that was used on her coronation day and belongs to the Royal Family.

There is also an exhibit featuring footage of Queen Elizabeth II on her coronation day, which is an uplifting and lovely way to forget all of the medieval torture chambers you just learned about.

25. Go to the top of St. Paul’s Cathedral

St Paul's Cathedral with snow in front with red flowers at night

St. Paul’s Cathedral , designed by Christopher Wren, is one of London’s leading landmarks and a true slice of both past and present London history.

Of course you can explore this together with your history buff girlfriend or boyfriend, but what’s even more romantic is walking through the narrow staircase all the way to the top of St. Paul’s Cathedral, where you can look out and see the city from a unique vantage point that only favors those willing to put up with the winding stairs.

26. Take a Bus Tour

Red London Bus

If you’re completely new to London and want to experience some culture and history in a hurry, you can always hop on a dedicated London bus tour .

You can choose from ones with experienced live guides talking you through the attractions you’re seeing, ones that have a hop-on/hop-off element so you can plot out your own journey, or ones that give you recorded guides so you can follow along in your language of choice as the bus zooms around the city.

Outdoorsy Things to Do in London for Couples

When I first moved to London, I was afraid I was in for a concrete jungle full of skyscrapers and no green space.

Luckily for my suburban loving self, what I found was plenty of parks, nature and green spaces to enjoy.

If you’re a couple who is also looking to get back to nature in London, I’ve compiled some of the best outdoor things to do in London for couples.

27. Take a Boat tour of the Thames

romantic day trip london

The Thames is the main river that flows through London and, of course, the reason why the city is there in the first place.

While it isn’t necessarily a river that I’d be quick to jump into, a boat ride on the Thames will keep you dry while letting you feel the breeze in your face and getting up close to this mighty river.

You can choose from a lot of different types of boat tours, but if you’re looking for something adventurous I would consider one of the Rib Boats that keep you close to the water and speeding along, or you could opt for a slower boat tour that even includes an afternoon tea!

28. Take a picnic to Hyde Park

A man walking under a green tree over a path in Hyde Park, London

As the biggest park in London, the best place to take a picnic with your date is Hyde Park.

Opt for a bench near the Serpentine Lake, or go further towards Marble Arch where you’ll just find loads of open grass to sit in.

Pack a picnic with food from the local supermarket and enjoy the sounds of people kids playing and people trying to soak in as much of the London sunshine as possible.

You could also find a more secluded spot further into the park if you wanted to have a more serious conversation…a proposal perhaps?!

29. Wander through Richmond Park to see the Deer

A deer with big antlers in Richmond Park London

One of the top things for nature loving couples to do in London is to head to Richmond Park in the morning, when you have a high chance of seeing the beautiful deer in the London mist.

Richmond Park is a National Nature Reserve and has over 600 deer freely roaming.

Take a romantic stroll through the park while you see which ones you can spot.

30. Kew Gardens

Kew Gardens looking over a lake

Kew Gardens is my favorite place in all of London, full stop.

You seriously won’t even feel like you’re in London when you’re wandering around the gardens, greenhouses and other natural exhibits.

Kew Gardens can be a full day out for couples in London due to the sheer size of the gardens, and there are also places to eat on site so you can grab some lunch before heading back into the exhibits.

31. Enjoy Epping Forest: things to do in London with your boyfriend or girlfriend

romantic day trip london

Did you know that you can go for a countryside walk in London?

Seems too good to be true, but simply take the Central Line to Epping Forest and you’ll find a land filled with open space and preserved forest to walk and talk in.

In addition to plenty of walking trails through the forest, you can also do some white water rafting in the summer if you’re looking for an adventurous thing to do in London for couples.

Free Things to Do in London for Couples

If you want some cheap date ideas for London, you’re in luck because there is a ton to do in this city without paying a single cent (besides your transportation, but you can even get over that most of the time by walking).

Check out my favorite romantic things to do in London for free.

32. Take in an Art Exhibit at the Tate Modern

Looking up at the Tate Modern in London from the outside

With completely free entrance, your day at the Tate Modern is going to save you loads of money and also give you a lot to talk about.

From blank canvasas to intricate sculptures to multimedia presentations, Tate Modern celebrates the idea that art is what you make of it – you won’t find any easy-to-decipher paintings of landscapes here.

It’s all about what’s innovative, what’s new, and what’s appealing to the senses.

Walk hand in hand as you stroll through the Tate Modern and use the art to start up conversations about life, art, and everything that’s great about London.

33. Stroll around Greenwich

romantic day trip london

Did you know that you can go stand on the prime meridian for free?

Check out Greenwich for a lovely afternoon walking through a beautiful part of London that holds a lot of culture, history and enchantment.

You can simply people watch in the park, or you could watch the boats float by you down the Thames.

Whatever you choose to do, save it for a sunny day in London for the ultimate London date idea.

34. Explore South Kensington

romantic day trip london

You know the London you see on television – the posh looking, beautifully presented row homes that just seem to be dripping with money?

You’ll find those in South Kensington , along with some incredible free London attractions like the Natural History Museum and the Science Museum.

One of my best suggestions for couples in London is to get off at South Kensington tube station and simply pick a direction and keep walking until you decide to change direction.

There is something to be found around every corner, and you might just spot a celebrity!

35. Stop and Smell the Roses at the Columbia Road Flower Market

Red and pink flowers at a flower market

You don’t need to purchase anything to take a romantic stroll through the Columbia Road Flower Market in East London.

Just let your nose be delighted with the smells of the flowers drifting through the air and take your camera to capture it all in bloom.

The Columbia Road Flower Market is open every Sunday from 8am until about 3pm, so fit it into one of your other London date ideas or just go for a wander after a lazy Sunday brunch.

36. Christmas Markets

romantic day trip london

During the winter season, London comes alive with the sight and sound of gorgeous Christmas Markets that are situated on the Southbank.

Simply bundle up in your warmest gloves and coat and head off towards the Thames to appreciate the holiday cheer (yes, it’s true, Londoners do have some cheer hidden somewhere!) and people-watch.

There is no charge to enter the markets, though you can bring some extra pocket change if you want to purchase a hot chocolate or small gift for each other.

This is one of the most romantic things to do in London in the winter, so don’t miss out!

Romantic Things to Do in London at Night

London feels like a whole new city at night, and going on a night-time date in London gives you a whole new world of choices that you can’t necessarily get the same experience with in the daytime.

37. Ride on London Eye

The London Eye with the River Thames in the foreground and blue sky in the background

Riding on the London Eye in the evening is a great romantic date idea for couples who want to get a birds eye view of the city and see the sparkling lights.

It takes about 30 minutes to rotate entirely around, and while you are in a bubble with other people, they are big enough that you can stake out your own space.

Finish off your night time ride on the London Eye with a walk around Southbank or under Big Ben and you’ll be sure to remember your romantic evening in London.

38. Walk through Harrods

Harrods in London with blue sky

As the sun goes down, head into one of the world’s most famous department stores to see the glitz and the glam like you’ve never seen it before.

Harrods is a premier shopping destination for the wealthy, and there you can find almost anything you could possibly be looking for.

Watch as shoppers try and decide which multi-thousand pound dress they’re going to wear for that weekend’s party, or head to the toy shop where you can see toy demonstrations and let loose a bit.

39. Look at the View from the Shard

romantic day trip london

One of the coolest options for things to do in London at night for couples is to go up to the viewing platform in the Shard (you need to buy tickets) and get a view of the city from above.

The Shard, completed right before the Olympics in 2012, is the tallest building in the whole country and one of the tallest in Europe.

There are also restaurants in the Shard, should you wish to turn it into an evening of fun, or you can appreciate the view and then move on to your next adventure.

40. Attend a West End show

Harry Potter and The Cursed Child gargoyle light outside the theatre

There’s nothing quite like dinner and a West End show in London.

Whether you’re seeing Mamma Mia, Hamilton or Phantom of the Opera, going to the theatre at night is what many people’s London dreams are made of and you can find some great cheap London theatre deals !

Get dressed up with your date to look a bit fancy, then head to a nice restaurant for a “set menu” theatre deal, and then head on in to find your seats and enjoy a couple of hours of laughing, crying, singing, dancing – whatever’s on offer!

I always recommend booking with London Theatre Direct here for the best deals.

41. Royal Opera House

romantic day trip london

When you want to feel incredibly cultured after dark, book an opera at the Royal Opera House where you’ll be dazzled by the range and skill of the singers.

The Royal Opera House is a real London gem and one of the most important places in the city for arts and culture.

42. Silent Disco

While much less prestigious than the Royal Opera House, going to a silent disco in London is still a ton of fun.

In a silent disco, you put on a pair of headphones and then dance to the music in your ears – meaning that if you were to just walk into the room, you’d just hear a bunch of people dancing but to no music!

They’re a super fun way to break the ice with a date (though maybe not on the first one so you can, you know, actually talk) or way to explore London at night with your significant other.

43. Champagne Bar

romantic day trip london

You know an even classier thing to do as a couple in London in the evening than a wine bar?

A champagne bar!

There are multiple champagne bars around the city where the name of the game is, as would be expected, to taste and enjoy champagne together.

You can choose from a variety of venues, including one where you can press the “Press for Champagne” button and get it delivered right to you!

What else should I not miss in London?

If you’re visiting London soon, here’s a very brief rundown of a few of my other favorites to make sure you don’t miss anything!

  • Hidden London Walking Tour – this tour is the absolute best if you want to see London in a different light and uncover hidden nooks, crannies, and histories that you won’t get on your normal, run-of-the-mill London walking tour. Click here to check prices and book.
  • Historical Westminster Walking Tour with Churchill War Rooms – if you’re a history buff or even mildly interested in all of the insane things that have happened in London, particular during the wars, you have to book this tour which is an absolute bargain for the tour + entry to the Churchill War Rooms (basically two must-dos in one). Click here to check prices and book .
  • Cutest London Afternoon Tea on a Bus – want to see the sights and enjoy afternoon tea at the same time on the upper deck? Yes, absolutely you do. This afternoon tea is a real delight and helps you get out and about while also putting your pinkies up. Click here to check prices and book.

UK Travel Planning Guide: the FAQs

🏥 Should I buy UK travel insurance?

Absolutely yes. Basic coverage is not expensive, and as a visitor you are NOT covered under the NHS. Compare policies and prices with Travel Insurance Master here , a big name in the travel insurance business, and cross that off your list.

🔌 Do I need travel adapters for the UK?

Yes, you do, otherwise you won’t be able to plug in your electronics/phone/lifelines. I recommend this one , which is all-in-one so you can use it in other countries.

🚗 What do I need to drive in the UK?

The first thing you need to check out if you’re planning on renting a car in the UK is this guide to driving in the UK for visitors – the roads, signs, and driving experience will likely not be what you’re used to and it’s essential to prepare yourself to stay safe and aware.

🛌 What’s the best way to book hotels in the UK?

For UK hotels, Booking is the best site as it offers free cancellation on many properties. If you want an apartment, I always recommend VRBO over AirBnb.

📳 Will my phone work in the UK?

Yes – if you set it up right. Check out my guide on making your foreign phone work in the UK to ensure that you get the type of service you need.

🚿 Can I drink the water in the UK?

Yes, UK water is great and perfectly safe. But drink out of taps in any kitchen or use water fountains. Double check before drinking out of the taps in hotel bathrooms, though, as they may be on a different system. London water is safe to drink .

15 of the Most Romantic Things to Do in London

This post may contain affiliate links. Read our disclosure page for full details.

This piece on romantic things to do in London is a guest post from Kelly of A Pair of Passports .

Compared to the likes of Paris and Florence , London may not often be considered one of the most romantic places in Europe . However, with its incredible history and gorgeous architecture, it’s hard not to fall in love in London – and with London. It definitely is a great spot for a romantic European getaway.

It feels like the city is always changing, surprising its residents and visitors with new things to do and places to explore. As a couple that loves date night, though, we have learned to find the romance amidst the hustle and bustle. Here are fifteen romantic things to do and romantic places to go in London:

Table of Contents

15 Romantic Things to Do in London

Have a picnic in st. james park.

Wine and dine in style (and with a view of Buckingham Palace) at London’s St. James Park. It’s a quieter park than most in the evening, and a lovely place to wander around before parking and picnicking.

For a luxurious picnic, hampers can be purchased at Fortnum & Mason up the road.

Alternatively, pop into any M&S or Waitrose and pick up a bunch of ready to eat goodies and a bottle of wine. Aside from buying your goodies, this is one of many romantic AND free things to do in London !

A small pond surrounded by trees leading to a large government building.

Sip wine by candlelight at Gordon’s Wine Bar

Gordon’s Wine Bar is perhaps the coziest spot in London – if you can get a seat inside, that is! Get there early and stake out a spot, then sit and enjoy a bottle of wine by candlelight.

As you sit there chatting, you can feel the rumble of the trains going by. If you’re feeling peckish, they offer a lovely selection of cheeses.

PS: Make sure you’re well-dressed for your evening. This London packing list will help you prepare for your trip!

Cruise down the Thames at sunset

There is nothing more wonderful than experiencing the most beautiful London landmarks at sunset.

City Cruises offers a range of cruises down the Thames, including themed dinner cruises and show cruises. The routes vary, but almost all of them pass under Tower Bridge and float by Big Ben & the Houses of Parliament. Here is a Thames River cruise that runs from Westminster to Greenwich .

It’s a great way to get unobstructed views of some of London’s most popular sights. Plus, champagne on a boat at sunset (such as with this evening river cruise) ? Sounds like one of the most romantic things to do in London at night.

You can also enjoy spectacular sunset views from The Sky Garden.

View of the Tower Bridge in London lit up at night.

Spend a day wandering around Kew Gardens

Head southwest towards Richmond and spend the day at the Royal Botanical Gardens and Kew. The beautiful landscape features 60,000+ plants, glasshouses, and even a treetop walkway.

Learn about bees at The Hive, admire the stunning Palm House, and marvel at the Princess of Wales Conservatory, where you can transport yourselves throughout the world as you explore the ten different climatic zones.

Each season looks completely different at Kew, so it’s worth a visit year round. At Christmas, the entire place is transformed into Christmas at Kew , which features innovative light displays, Christmas goodies, and an incredible light show timed to Christmas music.

*Pro Tip: Buy The London Pass to get admission to Kew Gardens and 60 other attractions at one great low price.

Need more romantic stroll ideas? Don’t miss any of London’s best gardens.

Take in a performance at the Royal Opera House

There are few things more romantic than wining and dining before taking in a performance at the Royal Opera House.

The building itself holds so much beauty and history; add in an opera or an incredible ballet performance, and it’ll truly be a dream worthy night.

Psst: Have only 2 days in London? Check out this itinerary that covers all the London essentials.

Dine in a romantic restaurant

London’s culinary scene is absolutely thriving, with new concept restaurants opening all the time featuring cuisines from all over the world.

While there is no shortage of restaurants to choose from, there are definitely some that stand out when it comes to the romance factor. Here are some of the best options for a romantic date night in London:

  • Cozy up in an Art Deco style booth at Bob Bob Ricard while indulging in the ‘Press for Champagne’ button
  • Dine with an incredible view over London at Aqua Shard
  • Add in a bit of mystery and book an experience at Dans Le Noir , where you will dine in total darkness
  • Feast on oysters at Wright Bros . cozy South Kensington location before sharing a bottle of champagne in the stylish basement bar

Watch the sunset from the sky

It seems like a new skyscraper is revealed in London each year, and every one offers some sort of bar or restaurant with stunning views. Head up to any of them for an evening drink and to watch the sunset. This will be the perfect end to your romantic day in London.

Or, for a great view of all of the skyscrapers, head to The Aviary .

View from the top of a large building overlooking a city on a cloudy day.

Cozy up by a pub fire with a board game

In the summer, London’s famous pub beer gardens flourish; in the winter, it’s the pubs that offer an open fireplace. Get to the pub early to snag a spot near the fire, then park yourselves there for a few hours.

Many pubs have board games that you can borrow; otherwise, bring your own deck of cards and just enjoy a lazy afternoon together with a couple of pints.

*Or, relax at a spa with one of these great London spa deals, an ideal option for London romantic activities.

Wander around one of London’s picturesque neighborhoods

Spend a day just wandering around hand in hand, finding your own favorite spots that you can return to every time you visit London. This is one of our favorite couple things to do in London. After all, there’s nothing more romantic than having a memory that is yours together.

Some great neighborhoods to explore include South Kensington , Notting Hill, Hampstead, and Greenwich.

A small cobblestone street with colorful buildings on either side with colorful vines hanging from a few of the buildings.

Watch theatre by candlelight at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse

The Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, an indoor theatre next to Shakespeare’s Globe, hosts performances year round. The performances are lit entirely by candlelight, with actors even carrying around candelabras while acting.

It’s an incredibly romantic form of entertainment! Next door, the beautifully decorated Swan offers great pre & post-theatre dining options, as well as drinks.

Taste your way around Borough Market

Is there anything more romantic than trying new things together? Spend an afternoon wandering around Borough Market, tasting every food you can imagine.

Stalls offer everything from fresh fruit & veg to warm baked goods. There’s even an entire shop dedicated to olive oil! Finish off your visit with a street food lunch and a wander along South Bank.

Enjoy champagne on a trip around the London Eye

While the London Eye is usually classed as perhaps one of the most touristy things to do in London , there is nothing better than admiring one of London’s most iconic sights, Big Ben, with a glass of champagne in hand.

Book one of the ‘special pods’ for your trip around the London Eye to enjoy a champagne or chocolate tasting during your journey.

Alternatively, if you want to go above and beyond in the name of romance, a full pod can be booked for a private dinner.

View from across a river at the London Eye ferris wheel.

Sneak out for a midnight meal at Duck & Waffle

Duck & Waffle not only overs stunning views over London and delicious menu options, but it is also open 24/7. Beat the crowds by sneaking out for a meal in the middle of the night. The late night menu is surprisingly robust!

Take a walk in Hampstead Heath

Despite its extremely central location, Hampstead Heath feels totally disconnected from the hustle and bustle of London. Go for a wander through the park with your loved one and you will immediately feel like you have been transported to the countryside.

On the north side of the park, Kenwood House is a historic home featuring an impressive art collection. On the south side, it’s all about Parliament Hill, which offers stunning views over London.

A beautiful pond in the middle of a large garden.

Eat breakfast in bed – with a view!

Many of London’s five star hotels offer five star views. Shangri-La at the Shard offers stunning views over St. Paul’s Cathedral, while Marriott County Hall faces Big Ben & the Houses of Parliament.

Most of the hotels located along the famous Park Lane look out over Hyde Park. And, if you prefer the look of interiors to the exterior view, consider staying at the beautifully designed Artist Residence .

Splurge on a room with a view and order breakfast to your bed; there’s nothing more romantic than a cozy morning in, and it certainly is the perfect addition to your romantic things to do in London!

For romantic walks in London, you can’t beat Hampstead Heath. Located just four miles from Trafalgar Square, it is one of London’s best-loved green spaces. 10 romantic places in London

We’ve pulled together London’s most romantic outdoor spots, perfect for dreamy dates in the capital. From walks along Regent's Canal and South Bank, to starlight at Primrose Hill and across Albert Bridge, head off on an outdoor date to remember with our guide of the top 10 romantic places.

St Dunstan-in-the-East

Surrounded by the skyscrapers of the City of London, St Dunstan-in-the-East really is a hidden treasure. Originally built around 1100, the church was destroyed during a bombing raid in World War II, but instead of raising the ruins to the ground, what remained – including a steeple by famed architect of nearby St Paul’s, Sir Christopher Wren – was granted Grade I-listed status. In the early 1970s it was turned into a public garden , complete with gorgeous, sensitive planting in and around the gothic pillars and walls. It’s also rumoured to be the location of Ross and Emily’s London wedding in Friends , but seeing as that didn’t turn out terribly well maybe it’s best not to bring it up.

Regent’s Canal

It's just over eight miles long from Little Venice to Limehouse, so a stroll from one end of Regent’s Canal to the other is a perfectly achievable long afternoon activity. But if you’re looking to stay local and a lengthy hike doesn’t quite fit your romantic plans, then we recommend dipping into the winding stretch of path right by London Zoo, where – if you crane your neck and get the angle just so – you can get a free peek at the wildlife. With boats serenely chugging through the water, this is one of the city’s most calming spots.

Primrose HIll

‘It’s windy there and the view’s so nice,’ crooned Damon Albarn of Primrose Hill on Blur’s ‘For Tomorrow’. He was right on both counts. Guarding over the townhouses of this tucked away village-like corner of Camden , the glorious grassy peak offers one of the best views of the central London skyline, especially at night when the city lights shimmer and sparkle in the distance. Albarn isn’t the only person to pay tribute to the parkland – you can find a quote from poet and painter William Blake at the summit, which reads: 'I have conversed with the spiritual sun. I saw him on Primrose Hill.'

Columbia Road

While the road is usually the site of London’s famous flower market every Sunday, there’s something to be said for its enchanting Victorian cobbles when it’s empty too. Cap off a walk in nearby Haggerston Park, London Fields or Victoria Park with a trip down this lovely time warp of a street. If your stomach is rumbling then pop into much-loved neighbourhood restaurant Brawn , which reinvented itself as a deli during lockdown, selling pre-prepared dishes such as cassoulet and braised-beef pie. If you can’t wait to get back home to heat and eat, then fiery Nashville hot-chicken sandwiches are available to go on weekends.

Bustling with tourists and locals taking in theatre, film , music and more at the National Theatre, BFI, Royal Festival Hall and Southbank Centre, the South Bank is still a cultural hotspot. Alternatively, you could simply get up close and personal with the Thames via the promenade between Blackfriars and Westminster bridges or bask in the riverfront glow with a takeaway drink from one of the pop-up bars.

Nunhead Cemetery

All of London’s Magnificent Seven – the majestic group of grand Victorian cemeteries built when space was at a premium in small churchyards – have individual appeal, but rambling Nunhead is perhaps the most peaceful. Less overrun with walkers than the more popular Highgate and Kensal Green spots, this cemetery has a hill that can be scaled for stolen views of the city and paths that weave among ivy-wrapped monuments. In winter, keep your eyes open for snowdrops poking through the grass, or maybe even some early floral signals of spring at that time of year, such as bluebells and daffodils.

Albert Bridge

There are few sights in London more spectacular than the Albert Bridge , which connects Chelsea on the north side of the Thames with Battersea on the south . A Grade II-listed structure, it can be spotted in Gwyneth Paltrow rom-com Sliding Doors and has even been immortalised in song, the Pogues’ ‘Misty Morning, Albert Bridge’, a sweeping ballad about returning to the arms of a city-dwelling lover.

Long an inspiration for creative minds, Bloomsbury has always balanced pursuits of both an intellectual and poetic nature. A walk around the gorgeously laid out squares and storybook streets of Bloomsbury, where writers such as Virginia Woolf and Charles Dickens once lived, is always packed with potency. Check out the brutalist Brunswick Centre and then go on a blue plaque spotting mission, followed by the most romantic street snack we can think of – a shared bag of fish and chips dripping with salt and vinegar from the greatest chippie in London, the Fryer’s Delight.

Another area of London which seems relatively untouched by time, the riverside royal borough of Greenwich offers a number of outdoor treats. Stomp up to the top of the hill in Greenwich park to reach the Observatory and stand on either side of the meridian line, take a look at the 19th-century tea clipper Cutty Sark or stroll around the beautiful grounds of the Old Royal Naval College – a UNESCO World Heritage Site which you might recognise from Four Weddings and a Funeral and the 2012 film of Les Misérables . The view of the imposing buildings is even better from the other side of the river, accessible via the ever so slightly spooky Greenwich Foot Tunnel.

Hampstead Pergola

Over the past few years what was Hampstead Heath’s best-kept secret has become a pretty popular haunt for anyone in a local radius to snap photographs of the boughs of wisteria . Yet it’s impossible to dint the charm of the pergola, a garden worthy of a countryside stately home and a regular spot for marriage proposals and weddings. If you’re not thinking of popping the question, don’t worry – it’s not a condition of visiting this stunning Georgian arbour and terrace, as well as the lush Hill Garden, the formerly private grounds of a long since demolished manor house.

10 Best Romantic Things to Do in London, UK – A Guide for Couples

Looking for romantic things to do in London in the UK? I have been to London countless times and it is one of my favourite cities. London is a quintessential destination for romance.

I would love to share with you some of the London attractions and activities that are worth visiting for a romantic day or night with your loved one.

It’s the hidden gems and the moments in between that truly make London special for couples. From luxurious experiences to budget-friendly yet unforgettable activities, I’ve got you covered.

1. Thames River Cruise

2. the shard: enjoy the view, 3. covent garden: street performers and shopping, 4. visit the royal botanic gardens, kew, 5. romantic dinner for two, 6. couples massage at a luxury spa, 7. bike ride in hyde park, 8. outdoor cinema experience, 9. wine tasting at an elegant cellar, 10. a day trip to windsor, romantic things to do in london, uk :.

Romantic Date at London Eye Ryazan and Stephen Tristram

If you’re looking for romantic things to do in London, UK, a Thames River Cruise should absolutely be on your radar.

A Thames River Cruise offers an unbeatable blend of sightseeing and intimate moments. Imagine sailing past landmarks like the Houses of Parliament and the London Eye, all while sharing a glass of champagne with your significant other.

The experience is mesmerizing at any time of day, but it reaches peak romance as the sun sets or after dark.

As for the best times to hop on a cruise, I’d recommend evenings for that magical sunset experience, particularly in the late spring or summer when the weather is more likely to be on your side.

Winter cruises can be cozy and equally magical with the right layers and perhaps a warm beverage in hand.

There are numerous operators offering various packages, from simple sightseeing trips to luxurious dinner cruises.

Feel free to check this Th a mes River Cruise via Get Your Guide , which offers a scenic cruise from Westminster to Greenwich along the River Thames.

Or you can also opt for an evening Thames River cruise via Get Your Guide , which also offers canapés and bubbly.

You can choose the package that best suits you, keeping in mind the landmarks you wish to see or the amenities like food and drinks that might be included.

The Shard in London UK

Another go-to destination for romantic things to do in London, UK, has to be The Shard.

Towering above the city at a jaw-dropping 310 meters, it’s the tallest building in the United Kingdom and the sixth tallest in Europe.

The Shard was designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano and was completed in 2012, changing London’s skyline forever.

Why is The Shard a romantic must-see? Well, you’re literally above it all, with London sprawling out beneath you.

The 360-degree panoramic view is beyond spectacular, offering a unique perspective of landmarks you might have just seen on your Thames River Cruise.

Just imagine sharing that awe-inspiring sight with the one you love. Sounds romantic, right?

Visiting in the late afternoon is my top recommendation. This way, you can watch the city transition from day to night, giving you the best of both worlds—the sun setting over the city followed by London’s famous landmarks lighting up the skyline.

Plus, nothing screams romance more than a sunset viewed from 800 feet in the air.

Covent Garden in London

We’ve been on top, but what about something a little more down-to-earth?

Visit Covent Garden, a neighborhood that blends culture, commerce, and an energetic vibe that you can’t help but fall in love with.

No trip centered around romantic things to do in London, UK, would be complete without a stop here.

First off, let’s talk street performers.

From magicians and musicians to acrobats and fire-eaters, the range of talent you’ll encounter is not only entertaining but also creates an atmosphere of spontaneity that’s perfect for romance.

You never know what you’ll see next, and that element of surprise and topic for conversation, plus can add an exciting twist to your date.

The area is also teeming with boutiques, designer stores, and market stalls.

Whether you’re looking for a special gift for your partner or simply enjoying a browse through antique treasures and handmade crafts, the experience is tailored for couple bonding.

The cobbled streets and architecture add a storybook charm to your shopping adventure , making it an experience that’s both intimate and fun.

I’ve got to say, that the blend of arts and shopping can turn an ordinary day into a memorable experience, even offering plenty of opportunities for those must-have Instagram shots that capture your romantic getaway.

And don’t even get me started on the cafes and eateries here!

Ways How to Get From London to Kew Gardens in London UK

If your idea of love involves nature, then visiting the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, has to be on your list of romantic things to do in London.

This isn’t just another garden, folks; Kew Gardens is an iconic green space, home to the largest and most diverse collection of plants in the world.

It is also listed as one of the UNESCO World Heritage sites in the UK . Noted for its great contribution to the study of plant diversity and botany.

Come on, just imagine walking hand-in-hand through secluded paths lined with plants, flowers, and trees.

The scenery around you changes with each turn, from formal gardens to natural landscapes. And then there’s the Treetop Walkway, where you’re literally walking 18 meters above the woodland floor.

The vantage point offers you a unique view of the park and, of course, some alone time up in the canopy. Trust me; this place can make you feel like you’re in your own romantic film, minus the cheesy lines.

If you’re looking for special events, visit around February 14th, when the gardens usually host a Valentine’s Day tour.

It’s a wonderfully curated experience focusing on the romantic stories behind the plants and features of the garden.

And don’t miss the annual Orchid Festival , usually held in February and March. The Princess of Wales Conservatory is transformed into a tropical paradise, creating a perfect backdrop for romance.

As for ticket information, prices vary depending on what you’re after. You can buy your Kew Gardens Tickets via Get Your Guide , but there are package deals for special events and exhibits.

I recommend advance booking online for the best rates and to secure your spot.

Romantic Dinner for Two in London UK

Now, let’s dim the lights and dial up the romance because no guide to romantic things to do in London is complete without mentioning the city’s incredible dining scene.

London is a gastronomic playground, and when it comes to sharing a special meal with your significant other, the options are endless and seriously impressive.

Let’s start with Duck & Waffle . Situated on the 40th floor of a skyscraper, this restaurant pairs mouthwatering dishes like its signature duck and waffle with views that’ll knock your socks off.

We’re talking about a panoramic vista of London that turns your dinner into a multisensory experience. Now, mix that with a fine glass of wine, and you’ve got a date night that’s off the charts.

But what if you’re looking for something more upscale? The Shard isn’t just about the views; it’s also home to some remarkable dining experiences.

The Shard Restaurants and Bar offer not only divine menus but also an atmosphere that’s simply dreamy.

Enjoying a steak or fresh seafood while gazing out at the city lights below—you can’t get more romantic than that.

For the foodies who appreciate gourmet dining, The Clove Club is a must-visit. This 2-star Michelin restaurant in Shoreditch offers a menu that’s inventive and rich in flavor, presented in a cozy, unpretentious setting.

It’s romance for the refined palate, and trust me, you’ll be talking about that meal for months to come.

If classic is more your style, then The Ritz Restaurant is your go-to. This Michelin-starred establishment offers a sense of timelessness that’s as iconic as London itself.

With its elegant decor, fine china, and impeccable service, dining here isn’t just a meal; it’s an event. It encapsulates the kind of old-school romance that never goes out of style.

Enclave on Lotus Spa in Royal Princess

Alright, so we’ve talked about fancy dinners, romantic strolls, and exhilarating views, now let’s go into something more…relaxing.

One of the most overlooked but incredibly rewarding romantic things to do in London, UK, has to be a couples massage at a luxury spa.

Seriously, if you haven’t considered this yet, it’s time to put it on your romantic radar.

My recommendations include Shangri-La at The Shard . It is nothing short of a dream. This isn’t just a massage; it’s an experience set against the backdrop of iconic city views.

Then there’s Aire Ancient Baths , another gem you can’t afford to miss. This spa is inspired by the tradition of Roman baths and offers a stunning underground oasis.

You can soak in thermal baths before or after your massage, adding another layer of relaxation to your spa day.

The dimly lit atmosphere, accented by candles and ancient stone architecture, adds an element of mystery and ancient romance to your experience.

Hyde Park in London UK

If you’re hunting for romantic things to do in London, UK, that combine a bit of adventure with picturesque scenery, then a bike ride through Hyde Park is an excellent bet.

Now, I know what you’re thinking. “A bike ride, really?” But hear me out!

Hyde Park isn’t just any park. It’s one of London’s largest and most famous green spaces!

Imagine riding through tree-lined pathways, next to lakes and flower gardens. But it’s not just about the landscape; it’s also about the shared experience.

Plus, there’s the freedom to hop off your bikes and enjoy a spontaneous picnic or catch a live band performance, adding layers of fun to your date.

As for renting a bike, there are multiple docking stations around Hyde Park where you can rent “Santander Cycles” by the hour.

Just use your bank card at one of the terminals, and you’re good to go.

London kicks it up a notch with outdoor cinema experiences that are way too charming to pass up, especially when you’re looking for romantic things to do in London.

What sets outdoor cinema apart is the ambiance. Forget about the closed, dark rooms of a traditional movie theater.

Here, you’re surrounded by the open sky, fresh air, and sometimes even iconic London landmarks as your backdrop.

Among the places to catch an outdoor movie, Rooftop Cinema is a standout.

As the name implies, it’s a cinema on a rooftop, offering panoramic views of the city.

This is prime territory for romantics. You’ve got the sunset, the skyline, and a film that you both love—what more could you ask for?

Another intriguing option is Float-in Cinema by Openaire . Yep, you heard that right.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Float-In Cinema by Häagen-Dazs (@openairecinema)

This involves watching a movie from a boat, gently floating on water. If that doesn’t scream ‘unique date night,’ I don’t know what does.

As you sit on the boat, snacks in hand, the screen lights up in front of you, and the rest of the world seems to fade away.

It’s just you, your partner, and the magic of cinema, all set against a watery tableau.

Wine Tasting Romantic Experience in London UK

Wine tasting is a refined affair, but don’t let that intimidate you.

It’s less about being a connoisseur and more about sharing a sensory journey with someone special.

If you’re compiling a list of romantic things to do in London, UK, sipping on fine wines in an elegant cellar should be up there.

London presents a couple of options that truly stand out. Claridge’s Bar , one of the iconic luxury hotels in the city, offers wine tastings that are every bit as opulent as you’d expect.

It’s not just wine; it’s an atmosphere of elegance and sophistication, making the experience incredibly romantic.

At Claridge’s, you can find exclusive packages that include a tour of their vintage collection.

On the flip side, if you want something with historical charm, you can’t go wrong with Gordon’s Wine Bar .

It’s the oldest wine bar in London and exudes an atmosphere of old-world romance.

Gordon’s operates on a more casual basis, but getting there early is advisable as it’s a popular spot, especially during the weekends.

Windsor Castle

If the noise of London ever starts to feel a bit overwhelming, a day trip to Windsor is the perfect escape.

Situated just a stone’s throw away from the capital, Windsor offers a tranquil yet majestic atmosphere, making it a top choice for romantic things to do near London, UK.

You’ll get a mix of grandeur, gardens, and town atmosphere, all rolled into one enchanting day.

Getting to Windsor is a piece of cake. I wrote a handy guide on Ways How to Get from London to Windsor Castle , feel free to read it so you can plan ahead.

Once you arrive, you can feel the slower pace and relaxed vibe—a stark but welcome contrast to London’s constant motion.

Now, what makes Windsor a perfect romantic day trip?

Well, you can’t mention Windsor without talking about Windsor Castle , one of the oldest and largest inhabited castles in the world.

Walking through its opulent rooms and extensive grounds feels like stepping into a fairytale.

Beyond the castle, the town itself adds to the romantic allure. You can take a stroll down its cobblestone streets, lined with cute shops and cafes.

Maybe pick up a memento or two, or indulge in some local treats.

Well, that’s it—a rundown of some of the most unforgettable and romantic things to do in London, UK. They’re about sharing experiences that evoke emotion, create connection, and leave lasting memories.

Let the love journey begin, and may London be the backdrop of your most cherished memories together! Cheers to romance in the city that has it all.

Amberley Castle

Amberley Castle

The idyllic Amberley Castle is a 900 years old West Sussex castle with mediaeval walls and luxurious hotel rooms. Elegant rooms are furnished with antiques and fine fabrics and fluffy bathrobes and slippers await you in your modern high-spec bathroom.

Dine in the 12th Century Queen’s room with its vaulted ceiling or in the Great Room with oak flooring, a tapestry and suits of armour.

Amberley Castle’s stunning gardens are home to an 18-hole putting course and two gorgeous lakes. There’s also tennis courts on-site and you can enjoy a game of croquet on the lawn with your partner.

Practical Tips to Consider Before Booking Your Romantic Escape from London

  • Check if the hotel has any special couples packages – this will add an extra touch of romance to your trip.
  • Look for hotels that have activities or for things to do in the surrounding areas, some hotels outside of London might be in remote locations.
  • Check travel requirements if you’re using public transport, not all of the hotels have good transport links.

9 of the Best Romantic Day Trips from London

Take advantage of the one-day sunny patch that falls exactly on a bank holiday and explore the amazing places the uk has to offer (as well as one cheeky non-uk location) with this list of 9 of the best romantic day trips from london., 1. cotswold.

We have to kick of this list with the glorious Cotswold. You can certainly spend more than a day exploring if time allows as you will be taken a back by the beauty of the villages/ towns, the quaintness and the stark change of speed from the hustle and bustle of London town. You will need a car to really be able to explore the region. Some of the best places to include in your day trip are Blenheim Palace, Bourton-on-the -Water, The Slaughters (upper and lower), Bibury and Chipping Campden. Plan your route in advance so that you can see as many of these gems as possible.

Easily reached by car or train the city was initially created by Romans and so the main attraction to see is the Roman Baths. It was also the residence of Jane Austen so you can pay homage and visit the centre named after her. The delightful cobbled streets of the city are the filming location for the historical romance show Bridgerton so why not walk around and have your very own period drama moment. Finally, many people combine this day trip with Stonehenge, so if you have not yet seen it for yourself this could be a great opportunity.

3. Brighton

A swift under-an-hour Thameslink train ride and you’re there ready to enjoy the coast. Marvel at the architectural wonder that is the Royal Pavilion, have fun at the arcade on Palace Pier, wander through the narrow streets of Brighton’s artsy district The Lanes and perhaps just relax on the pebbled beach front for a while to.

4. Stratford-Upon-Avon

Another great train trip. Visit the birthplace of Shakespeare for a day full of Sonnets and olden days history. Watch a play preformed by the Royal Shakespeare Company, walk in the shoes of the worlds’ greatest storyteller by visiting his home, enjoy a riverside picnic or a delicious meal in a pub and for something totally unrelated visit the Butterfly Farm.

best romantic day trips Cambridge

5. Cambridge

Cambridge is to be explored two ways.  The first is by foot and we recommend joining a group tour that takes you around and teaches you about all the history the town and the colleges have to offer. The second way to explore is by punting. Have a breeze of a time enjoying the views of a carefree canal ride. It is easy to get to Cambridge as it is a short train ride away and many trains operate throughout the day.

Windsor can be visited by train or car. Take a tour of Windsor Castle including St. George’s Chapel where the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle was held. Explore the Great Park, drop by neighbouring Eton, visit the Windsor & Eton Brewery to sample signature beers, get locally sourced treats at Windsor Farm Shop or make your way to Legoland.

7. Liverpool

Hear us out here, Liverpool may not be the typical choice that comes to mind when we are talking romance but for Beatles fans there is nothing quite as heart warningly nostalgic about experiencing Penny Lane or Strawberry fields for the first time. Take the train to the city and join one of the many tours that show you around these famous landmarks. Then enjoy exploring the docks together (you can also visit the Beatles experience there), grab fish & chips and head out to catch an afternoon performance at The Cavern Club.

We’ve had to include Rye on the list of romantic day trips from London because it’s literally a perfect fairytale town to drive or take the train to on a warm summers’ day. Snap some amazing shots of Mermaid Street, visit the Ypres Tower or St. Mary’s Church and finally holiday for a little by the beaches of Camber Sands. A fairytale town perfect to drive or take the train to on a warm summers’ day. Snap some amazing shots of Mermaid Street, visit the Ypres Tower or St. Mary’s Church and finally holiday for a little by the beaches of Camber Sands.

It can be done! Plan in advance to get affordable Eurostar tickets. You will need to go first thing in the morning to really get the most out of your day but it will be well worth it. Imagine starting the morning in ol’ St. Pancras and by lunchtime being on a champagne cruise on the Seine. We couldn’t think of anything more romantic! There is an endless amount of things to do in Paris but the aforementioned is certainly one we wouldn’t recommend missing because you can get a glimpse of everything between Notre Dame to the Eiffel tower. Perhaps explore one of the amazing museums Paris has to offer during your day, or the gorgeous cobbled streets of St. Germain and the Latin Quarter. Finally, end the day with a stunning vantage point view from Montmartre. At the time of writing Covid-19 restrictions still apply.

And once you’ve had a heck of an outing taking in the stunning UK (and Parisian) landscape, consider staying in and enjoying one of our date boxes for an equally memorable (certainly easier to plan), fun time at home!

Dreamy day trips from London

St Leonards-on-Sea

1.  St Leonards-on-Sea

Famed for how many Londoners moved here during lockdown (it’s even been referred to as Dalston-on-Sea, which is cringe, we’ll admit), St Leonards-On-Sea is a cracking day out from the Big Smoke for beachside drinks and a tonne of great food spots. Head to food market Heist  (basically a much nicer version of Boxpark) for orange wine and street food, then sink pints at Goat Ledge , a vibesy, colourful shack right on the beach. If you fancy splashing out a little, book dinner at the fabulously old-school  St Clement’s for white tablecloths and delicious seafood. Plus you've got easy access to the rest of Hastings for its Old Town, pier and the Norman castle ruins.

How far? 58 miles

How to get there: A one hour 18 minute train from London Charing Cross

https://media.timeout.com/images/105993350/image.jpg

2.  Dungeness

Dungeness’s shingly, shipwreck-dotted beach is so spookily empty that it’s been described as Britain’s only desert (though the Met Office refuses to technically recognise it as such, the party poopers). It’s a beautifully eerie landscape, with the (disused) nuclear power station and two lighthouses looming over a motley mixture of weathered shacks, beached fishing boats and sleek, modernist bungalows – all clustered along a single in-and-out road.

But despite all that emptiness, there’s a surprising amount to do here. You could catch the Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch steam train down the coast, and hop off in Dungeness for a walk and a pint at the lonely Britannia Inn. Grab a freshly-caught lunch at the famous Snack Shack: specialities include lobster or crab rolls and smoked cod chowder. And check out the galleries and open houses showcasing the work of the (surprisingly) many artists who have moved down here, including the shingle garden of the experimental filmmaker Derek Jarman, whose yellow-windowed Prospect Cottage is a major landmark here. Book in advance for a 40-minute tour inside.

If you’ve got time, head over to RSPB Dungeness nature reserve for a chance to glimpse glossy ibises and marsh harriers – plus the huge concrete ‘sound mirrors’, pre-radar experiments from WW1 that were designed to listen out for planes. (Look out on the RSPB site for news of the rare open days when you can get up close.) Finish off your day with dinner at the Pilot Inn; I’m willing to back the quality of their famous fish and chips, which were the thing that brought Derek Jarman here in the first place.

How far? 86 miles

Get there O ne hour  by train from St Pancras International to Folkestone, with a one-hour 30-minute bus ride to Dungeness. Or take a bus or taxi from Folkestone to Hythe station to board the Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway. Alternatively, Dungeness is  around two hours from London by car.

3.  Stratford-upon-Avon

As a born-and-bred Midlander, I’ve spent many Saturdays traipsing around Stratford-upon-Avon’s lovely streets. With its half-timbered houses and canalside pubs, Stratford’s got just enough of the  small-town charm you’re craving on an escape from the Big Smoke, but unlike a small town, there’s actually loads to see and do.

The Bard, of course, is the big draw here, and Shakespeare’s house, his wife Anne Hathaway’s cottage and the RSC’s famous theatre are all must-sees. But Stratford is more than just a Tudor Disneyland, we promise. Take a boat tour of the canal basin to find out more about the West Midlands waterways, refresh yourselves in the Grade II-listed Old Thatch Tavern and stop for a scoop of Eton mess ice cream at Hooray’s British Gelato Kitchen.

How far? 104 miles

Get there T wo hours 15 minutes  by train from Marylebone; around two hours by car.

4.  Whitstable

Don’t even think about thinking about it: Whitstable is far from overhyped. Sure, the secret is most definitely out about this fabulous little seaside town, but the vibes here are as great as they were 20 years ago. Grab brunch at Farm & Harper , fish and chips at Ossie’s and a glorious pint of craft at the Twelve Taps , and treat yourself to a dozen oysters to go at Wheelers Oyster Bar on the high street. Once you’ve walked the length of the beach and admired the beach huts, settle in at the famous pub-on-the-beach Old Neptune for a pint and wait for sunset to fall. Plus, Whitstable is so near, you’ll be back home before you can say ‘ another   bank holiday?’. But that’s if you don’t miss the last train.

How far? 50 miles

Get there One hour 15 minutes from St Pancras International, around two hours by car.

Brighton

5.  Brighton

With its pebble beach, wall-to-wall live music venues and buzzing LGBTQ+ scene, there’s nowhere better for topping up your Vitamin Sea levels than Brighton . Start your day by dodging seagulls on the Palace Pier, then shop up a storm in the Lanes, which are packed with independent boutiques, record stores and vegan eateries. Sit down with a couple of pints in the Brighton Beer Dispensary, which champions small Sussex breweries like the Hand Brew Co.

How far?  A little over 50 miles

Get there One hour by train from Victoria, Blackfriars or London Bridge; around two hours by car.

https://media.timeout.com/images/106055825/image.jpg

6.  The New Forest

A trip to the New Forest is about as close as you can get to going on safari without buying a plane ticket. As you make your way down dappled lanes and across the heather-covered heath you’ll be watched the famous ponies, which have grazed there for thousands of years, plus free-ranging Highland cattle and pigs hoovering up fallen acorns. Don’t fancy being stuck in the car all day? Hire a two-seater electric Twizzy buggy to explore in, or book a beginners’ hack at one of the stables. Don’t forget to make time for a proper ploughman’s lunch at the Royal Oak in Fritham.

How far? 90 miles

Get there  One hour 30 minutes by train from Waterloo to Brockenhurst; around two hours by car. Just remember that animals, not drivers, have right of way here.

Rye

7.  Rye

The antique shops and higgledy-piggledy cobbled lanes of Rye make it feel like a little slice of the Cotswolds on the coast. After you’ve satisfactorily browsed around the accurately named Tiny Book Store, treat yourself to a seafood lunch surrounded by lobster pots at Globe Inn Marsh, followed by Sussex real ale or a glass of local wine at The George. The Chapel Down vineyard is just up the road and well worth a visit if you want to know the ins and outs of wine-making – or simply enjoy a tipple with their signature wine tasting. Ten minutes away are the pillowy dunes of Camber Sands: roll your trousers up and splash through the shallows, take a kite for a spin or just park your towel and stretch out.

How far? 79 miles.

Get there  One hour 10 minutes by train from St Pancras International (with a change at Ashford); around two hours by car.

Box Hill

8.  Box Hill

Biking to green and pleasant Surrey is a wheely nice way to spend a Sunday (sorry) – plus, Box Hill was part of the 2012 Olympic road-cycling route. Start in Richmond Park and pedal down past Hampton Court – it should take you about two hours. After a 1.6 mile climb and some hairpin bends (easier than it sounds!), you’ll be rewarded with stunning views of the North Downs from the top of Box Hill. Grab a slice of cake from the National Trust café, and save space for lunch at The Tree, which serves homemade pies and crumbles. Your last stop is Box Hill and Westhumble station, where you can load your bikes on to a train back to Waterloo. Whew!

How far? 30 miles

Get there  Two hours by bike (obviously). Plan the route carefully before you set out, and take a map and a puncture repair kit, plus water and snacks.

Bath

9.  Bath

A glorious water-themed day awaits you in the city of Bath . Start as you mean to go on with a tour of the Romans baths (no paddling allowed, you’ve been warned), before making a splash in the Thermae Bath Spa – the rooftop pool has stunning views of the city. Once you’ve dried off, make like Jane Austen and stroll along the Royal Crescent. Peckish? Sally Lunn’s teahouse is home to the Sally Lunn Bun, a kind of sweet brioche bap – for a Bath take on the cream tea, order one toasted and spread with strawberry jam and clotted cream.

How far? 115 miles

Get there  One hour 30 minutes by train from Paddington; two hours 30 minutes by car.

Mersea Island

10.  Mersea Island

Attached to the mainland by a causeway that floods (and pub quizzers, take note: this is the UK’s most easterly inhabited island), Mersea feels properly remote at high tide. The big draw is The Company Shed, which serves seafood platters that pull in crowds from all over the country every weekend. It’s BYOB – bring your own bread – and they don’t take bookings, so get there before noon to make sure you can feast on prawns, smoked fish, oysters and dressed crab. Speaking of which, catch-and-release crabbing is encouraged – there are specially marked areas near the water, and shops selling the kit. Or you can book a boat trip around the bay.

How far? 69 miles

Get there  One hour by train from Liverpool Street to Colchester, then a 45-minute bus to Mersea Island; around two hours by car. D on’t forget to check the tide timetable before you set off...
