  • Income Travel Insurance: Is It a Good Deal?

Author - Anastassia Evlanova

  • Covers pre-existing conditions
  • Provides COVID-19 hospitalisation and evacuation coverage for certain countries
  • Expensive, especially annual plans
  • Low personal accident and medical benefits

Like many other insurers, NTUC Income offers three levels of travel insurance policies to cater to the tastes and budgets of all kinds of consumers. Ultimately, its plans tend to be priced quite close to the industry average and feature a medium degree of coverage in most areas with two main weak points. While Income's plans are priced fairly given the level of coverage provided, deal-seekers will not be particularly wowed. However, Income's travel insurance policies stand out because they are one of the only insurers in Singapore that cover pre-existing medical conditions.

NTUC Income Travel Insurance: What You Need to Know

NTUC Income's travel insurance plans are best for travellers who aren't price sensitive and want coverage for their pre-existing conditions. You can choose from 3 tiers of plans for both the Enhanced and Enhanced PreX plans: Classic, Deluxe and Preferred for the standard plans and PreX Basic, PreX Superior & PreX Prestige for the pre-ex coverage plans. We found that Income's single trip plans generally cost 15-30% below average compared to its competition, while its annual plans cost between average to 20% above average. For those prices, the coverage is more competitive when it comes to travel inconvenience benefits (cancellations, delays, luggage loss), but sinks to below average overseas medical and personal accident coverage.

This graph compares the price of all the major travel insurance policies in Singapore for a 1-week trip in the ASEAN region in order to help consumers find the cheapest travel insurance for their trip.

NTUC Income offers the standard array of travel insurance benefits, ranging from medical and personal accident to trip inconvenience benefits like trip cancellation, postponement, delays and baggage loss. While most of the benefit limits are slightly below average, Income does boast above average limits for medical coverage in Singapore, trip delay and baggage loss coverage. However, these plans may fail to impress some types of travellers. For instance, Income's Basic plan provides average levels of coverage but won't impress budget travellers since its possible to find cheaper basic plans. The premium tier plan (Preferred) boasts above average coverage for a small amount of benefits, but won't stand out to travellers who equate premium-level plans with market beating coverage.

Income's annual policies cost above average for all 3 plans, so it won't be the best option for frequent travellers who are hoping to save on an annual travel insurance plan. However, as Income is the only insurer that is currently providing COVID-19 medical and hospitalisation coverage as long as you take the mandatory PCR test and test negative pre-departure and won't be travelling to a high-risk nation, it is the best option for travel during the COVID-19 period. Overall, Income's travel insurance plans are just enough for the average traveller and can provide sufficient additional coverage if that traveller needs coverage for pre-existing coverage. Otherwise, Income's Enhanced travel insurance plans may not sway budget travellers or travellers who like high levels of coverage.

Notable Exclusions

NTUC Income only covers pre-existing conditions if you purchase their Enhanced PreX plans. Besides that, the exclusions are pretty standard, including no cover for travelling for medical conditions, items lost or damaged while unattended, travelling to participate in professional or compensated sports, being a victim of war, riots, or rebellion and travelling against the advice of the Singapore Government.

NTUC Income Enhanced PreX Plans Travel Insurance

If you are not limited by budget and just want a plan that will give you ample protection for your pre-existing coverage, Income will be a good choice. However, budget travellers with pre-existing conditions may find Income to be an expensive option. We found that Income's PreX travel insurance plans cost around 3 times as much as Income's standard plans, making them quite expensive considering that Income isn't competitively priced to begin with. As one of the 3 insurers who provides extensive coverage for your pre-existing coverage, it settles somewhere in the middle, with MSIG's plans costing 10-22% less but Etiqa's Tiq plans costing around 15% more.

Besides the pricing, you should also consider the extent of Income's pre-existing coverage benefits. Its PreX plans also combine medical and emergency evacuation coverage under one limit, which brings down the value of these plans considerably (for instance, MSIG's PreX and Tiq's PreX plans have separate limits for medical and emergency evacuation, resulting in more coverage than Income). On the other hand, Income does let you claim for trip inconvenience (cancellations and postponement) due to your pre-existing conditions if you buy its Superior or Prestige plans, which can be a useful benefit for people who book their trips far in advance and have somewhat risky conditions. You should just be aware of the 50% copay you'll be responsible for should you use those benefits.

Income includes medical coverage for adventure and sports including skiing, scuba-diving, white water rafting and motorcycling. There's no golf coverage and no cover for extreme sports such as bungee jumping, skydiving and mountaineering.

Income lets you submit your claim online or via post. Both options require you to submit the proper documentation, which they list when you indicate the type of claim you want to submit. You should read the policy wording before buying the policy so you are aware of what you can and can't claim for.

Summary of NTUC Income Travel Insurance Benefits & Coverage

NTUC Income adds Covid-19 insurance coverage for overseas travel

ntuc income travel insurance terms and conditions

(THE BUSINESS TIMES) - NTUC Income customers who buy its travel insurance will now receive Covid-19 coverage as well, for medical-related expenses while overseas.

Outbound travellers, departing Singapore, who are covered by Income's single-trip insurance will be protected for the first 90 days of each trip for Covid-19 related hospitalisation expenses of up to US$100,000 (S$133,900) while abroad.

They will also be covered for costs incurred for medical evacuation or repatriation of up to US$100,000, if necessary.

These Covid-19 benefits are automatically included in single-trip insurance plans purchased from Thursday (Nov 26) - including plans covering pre-existing conditions - and also for travel dates starting Thursday.

However, the Covid-19 benefits will be excluded from travel insurance for trips to countries that the World Health Organization deems as high risk for Covid-19 at the point of purchase.

Policyholders with existing annual travel insurance plans from Income can contact the insurer to find out about getting covered by these benefits for upcoming travel.

Fabian Ng, Income's general manager for consumer business, said that there are some individuals who will need to travel for necessary business-related and other essential matters, even as overseas travel is still restricted in general.

"Nevertheless, we urge everyone to take all necessary precautions when planning your travels as there are countries that are seeing a resurgence in Covid-19 cases or are still experiencing a high number of infections," Mr Ng added.

The Business Times (BT) reported last month that most travel insurance products do not cover Covid-19 related claims, although market leaders including Income had been reviewing some of their offerings.

Income told BT at the time that it may develop a product to cover inbound travellers to Singapore. On Thursday, an Income spokesperson said in response to BT's queries that the insurer is, at the moment, focusing on providing suitable Covid-19 cover for Singapore-based residents so that they can travel overseas with a greater peace of mind.

AXA Insurance currently offers Covid-19 travel cover for Scoot passengers on flights departing Singapore, and will soon be making such coverage available to all travellers regardless of the airline they fly, Julien Callard, its managing director, retail & health, told The Straits Times on Thursday.

Last week, Changi Airport Group and the Singapore Tourism Board announced that three insurance companies had each developed Covid-19 travel insurance plans for foreign visitors entering Singapore.

The three - AIG Asia Pacific Insurance, Chubb Insurance Singapore and HL Assurance - are providing at least S$30,000 in coverage for Covid-19 related medical treatment and hospitalisation costs for inbound travellers to the city-state.

To qualify for coverage related to a rental vehicle, you need to provide proof that the vehicle was rented from a licensed rental agency and that you were either a named driver or co-driver. The essential documents you need include:

  • Vehicle Rental Agreement: A copy of the rental agreement is a must. It clearly indicates your association with the vehicle, specifying your role as a named driver or co-driver.
  • Payment Receipts: Present receipts demonstrating payment of the rental excess or deductible. This financial record is crucial and showcases your financial responsibility concerning the rental.
  • Accident or Damage Reports: Any reports related to the accident or the lost or damaged rental vehicle are essential. These reports provide crucial details about the incident, helping validate your claim.

This means that your insurance coverage must align with the rental duration and include provisions for potential accidents or damages.

  • Custody and Control: The Policy does not cover any loss or damage to the rental vehicle that occurs when the vehicle is not under your direct custody and control. It’s crucial to ensure the vehicle is in your possession to qualify for coverage.

A. If any of the losses covered under Sections 1 to 25 are related to an act of terrorism, the Insurer will cover for the loss, subject to certain limits as specified in Section 26 of your plan, as outlined in the table of cover.

  • In addition to the General Exclusions detailed in Part 4 of the General Conditions, the Insurer will also not provide coverage for the conditions specified in sections 1 to 25.

Section 27a: COVID-19 cover extension (For sections 1 to 25 except section 15)

A. If any of the losses covered under Sections 1 to 25 (except Section 15) occur due to you, your travelling companion, or your family member (where applicable) testing positive for and suffering from COVID-19, it is mandatory to comply with all vaccination, pre-departure tests, and post-arrival test requirements (if any) mandated by the destination country or transport operator at the time of the trip.

While you are not required to submit the test result or proof of vaccination at the time of purchase, it must be provided when submitting a claim under this section. Additionally, you must ensure that all the conditions specified in the relevant section of your plan are adhered to. For example, under Section 1: Cancelling your trip, COVID-19 must still lead to a serious sickness to be eligible for coverage.

  • Coverage for any expenses incurred for mandatory COVID-19 diagnostic tests that you are required to undergo for the trip, including tests like Antigen Rapid Test (ART), Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) test, rostered routine tests, pre-departure tests, and post-arrival tests is excluded.
  • Exclusions apply to any claims arising from border closures, government advisories against travelling, or your personal decision to travel.
  • Claims resulting from a COVID-19 diagnosis or possible exposure that you were aware of at the time of purchasing this policy or planning your trip are not covered.

Section 27b: Overseas quarantine allowance due to COVID-19

A. If you are diagnosed with COVID-19 by an approved test provider or a medical practitioner during your trip and are subsequently placed under mandatory quarantine in a quarantine facility overseas, the following conditions must be met:

You are required to fulfil all vaccination, pre-departure tests, and post-arrival test requirements, if any, imposed by the destination country or transport operator at the time of your trip.

While it is unnecessary to provide the test result or proof of vaccination at the time of policy purchase, you must furnish these documents when submitting a claim under this section.

You must provide written confirmation from local authorities regarding the nature and details of your quarantine.

  • Any expenses related to mandatory COVID-19 diagnostic tests required for the trip, such as Antigen Rapid Tests (ART), Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) tests, routine tests, pre-departure tests, and post-arrival tests.
  • Claims arising from border closures, government advisories against travelling, or your personal choice not to travel.
  • Claims where the quarantine period falls outside the originally scheduled trip duration unless your policy is automatically extended as per general condition 2.
  • Claims when quarantine orders are mandated by local authorities for all travelers arriving in the country or for travelers from a specific country or region.
  • Claims related to COVID-19 diagnosis or possible exposure that you were already aware of when purchasing this policy or booking your trip.
  • Additional costs incurred during quarantine.
  • Claims if you stay in a residence that belongs to you, your friends, family members, or anyone related to you.
  • Claims incurred during the quarantine period if the Insurer paid for your accommodation expenses under Section 4, or paid under Sections 14 or 17 for the same event.

Other things to note about NTUC Income

NTUC Income has a strong reputation as an excellent financial service provider and has won numerous industry awards, including the Singapore Digital Experience of the Year – Financial Services in   2022  and the Best Insurance Technology Solution at the 2023 Singapore Business Review Technology Excellence  Awards.

NTUC Income’s commitment to transparency and customer satisfaction is evident in the sufficiency of information about its travel insurance plans on its website, with each benefit limit amount for each benefit category laid out in great detail.

This makes it easy for customers to compare NTUC Incomes’ plans to those of other insurers and choose the one that best meets their needs.

It is also a sign that NTUC Income is confident in its products and services and is committed to providing its customers with the best possible experience.

My Review of NTUC Income’s Travel Insurance

In this section, the insurers that we’re comparing NTUC Income against are:

  • AIG Travel Guard Direct
  • AIA Around the World Plus (II)
  • Allianz Travel Bronze
  • Klook TravelCare
  • MSIG TravelEasy
  • NTUC Income Travel Insurance
  • Sompo Travel (COVID-19) Insurance
  • Singlife Travel Insurance
  • Etiqa TIQ Travel Insurance (with COVID-19 cover)

We also took only some of the more notable benefits for comparison.

The comparison will be based on coverage for an individual travelling to Thailand for one week, using the lowest-tiered plan offered by all insurers.

Also, we will include an add-on for COVID-19 benefits.

When we look at the benefit you get for the cost, NTUC Income Travel Insurance is somewhere in the middle for single trips. In short, it’s pretty average.

The one standout feature is that it offers the highest amount of money for overseas travel delay, up to $1,000, more than most other insurers provide.

It also has one of the highest benefit limits for overseas medical expenses and baggage loss or damage.

Your best option might be to keep an eye out for promo codes on their website.

They offer these codes every now and then, which can help lower the total price of your premium.

This way, you can get more value for your money with their travel insurance plans.

Now, let’s compare the insurers that offer annual trip coverage. (We’re leaving out Sompo Travel Insurance because they don’t provide insurance for yearly trips.)

We’re looking at what they offer for someone travelling to Thailand once a year, focusing on the cheapest plans from all the insurers.

Now, when it comes to yearly trips, things change quite a bit.

In this scenario, NTUC Income secures the 6th spot out of 8 in terms of value for your money. They offer the 6th best benefits for the lowest premium.

They may not be the cheapest, but it’s worth noting that NTUC Income still offers one of the highest benefit limits for overseas medical expenses and baggage delays.

And remember, if NTUC Income happens to release any promo codes that can help you save even more, make sure to use them when you’re making your purchase.

Overall, NTUC Income Travel Insurance plans are a practical choice for your upcoming trips.

They cover the essentials, from medical protection to handling travel issues.

What sets NTUC Income apart?

First, they offer good value-for-money plans, even for annual trips. This means you can get comprehensive coverage at reasonable prices, which is great for frequent travelers.

And they have 2 different plan options (Standard and Enhanced PreX), each with 3 different tiers to suit your travel needs.

You can also buy their insurance up to 6 months before your trip, giving you plenty of time to decide.

Moreover, NTUC Income stands out with its coverage for pre-existing medical conditions (under the Enhanced PreX Plans). This is a significant advantage for travelers with existing health issues.

But if you’re looking for the cheapest insurance, their premiums might not be the lowest.

Their medical coverage, while good, might not be as extensive as some competitors like Singlife Travel Insurance or MSIG TravelEasy.

Remember, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution for travel insurance. It’s a good idea to do some research online and consider your specific travel circumstances before making a decision. Your choice should match your needs and priorities to ensure a worry-free trip.

According to a survey conducted by NTUC Income, most travellers are concerned about getting help in events such as catching Covid, accidents and losing their belongings.

Despite these concerns, majority of the respondents of the survey found purchasing travel insurance for such short trips expensive or cumbersome.

NTUC Income vice president and head of personal lines said Annie Chua: “With this in mind, we designed FlexiTravel Hourly Insurance to offer a pay-by-the-hour proposition to solve travellers’ pain points so they can continue enjoying their short trips while staying protected.”

According to the insurer, “FlexiTravel Hourly Insurance also provides COVID-19 benefits such as medical expenses incurred overseas and emergency medical evacuation if required.”

NTUC Income offers travel policy to cover travellers with pre-existing conditions

NTUC Income offers travel policy to cover travellers with pre-existing conditions

SINGAPORE - Travellers with pre-existing conditions can now claim medical and evacuation expenses under NTUC Income's new travel policy.

The Singapore-based company is the first insurer to offer a policy to cover travellers who incur costs during their overseas trip due to their pre-existing illnesses.

The Enhanced PreX Travel Insurance plan was introduced in October and will cover medical and evacuation expenses, and has no age limit imposed. However, the policy does not cover trip cancellation or curtailment due to pre-existing conditions.

Based on the company's claims experience, they learnt that medical and evacuation expenses are the two most costly and important items.

Ms Annie Chua, Senior Manager of Personal Lines of NTUC Income, said that the company receives an average of 10 per cent of medical claims that are not admissible because of the insured's pre-existing condition.

A significant number of people will be able to potentially benefit from this new policy, Ms Chua added, and go for their holiday with a greater peace of mind.

In terms of pricing, the premium for an adult travelling to Asia for five days is $68, NTUC Income said in a recent press statement. This is $14 more than NTUC Income's Deluxe Plan at $54. For a child, the difference is $9.50.

For example, a 15-day trip to the United States is $169, $34 more than NTUC Income's Deluxe Plan for an adult and $23 more than the Deluxe Plan for a child.

With the new Enhanced PreX plan, holiday-makers can receive a maximum coverage of 30 days for short trips.

The current Deluxe and Classic plans offers travellers coverage for an extended period of 180 days for similar short trips.

6 Things to Know About Travel Insurance for Extreme Sports and Outdoor Adventure Coverage (2024)

peterlin

We all know friends who are adrenaline junkies. Those who get kicks out of taking crazy risks and going on wild adventures all around the world. Heck, maybe you’re thinking: That’s me.

We all know how important travel insurance  is, but if you’re planning a ski trip, scuba diving trip or something even crazier than that, then you need to know which travel insurance cover extreme sports and outdoor adventure .

Here are 6 things you need to pay attention to when buying any sort of adventure sports travel insurance.

Travel Insurance for Extreme Sports and Outdoor Adventure Coverage

  • Best travel insurance for outdoor sports
  • What are the common outdoor adventure exclusions for travel insurance?
  • What are the common personal accident and personal liability exclusions?
  • Which outdoor activities are usually excluded?
  • How much do extreme sports riders cost?
  • Do you need sports equipment coverage?
  • Do you have sufficient emergency medical evacuation coverage?

1. Best travel insurance for outdoor sports

Planning your long-awaited trip overseas with your pals for scuba diving, rock climbing, skiing or snowboarding?

Remember to get travel insurance that covers your winter sports, water sports, or mountaineering and rock climbing (usually considered more dangerous).

When browsing travel insurance plans, you’ll realise that sports and adventure are usually split into 3 broad categories:

  • Leisure and recreational outdoor activities : Hot air balloon, scuba diving (up to 30m/40m, guided by licensed instructors, with PADI certification), skiing and snowboarding in resorts, hiking or trekking (up to 3,000m), jet ski, white water rafting, skydiving, paragliding, hang gliding, parachuting etc
  • Other more extreme sports : Bungee jumping, mountaineering, rock climbing (any climbing that involves ropes and equipment)
  • Competitions (not covered across all insurance companies except for Direct Asia) : Marathons, ultra-marathons, biathlons, triathlons

This table below is a general comparison. Click in to each travel insurance review to see the specific outdoor activities they cover:

2.  What are the common  outdoor adventure exclusions for travel insurance?

Even if your travel insurance plan claims that it covers outdoor adventure and extreme sports, there will still be exclusions—a.k.a. activities that your insurance company is not willing to cover. Here are a few major examples:

  • Any professional competitions or sports in which you get paid, sponsored or receive any kind of financial reward
  • Any leisurely contact sport or MMA classes such as Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ)
  • Mountaineering or rock climbing that involves ropes and climbing equipment, especially if it’s done unharnessed and outdoors on a wall that is not man-made
  • Expeditions to inaccessible, remote or previously unexplored places
  • Being the pilot or a crew member of an aircraft (except for your commercial flights eg. SQ)

You’ll be surprised that most marathons are not covered by travel insurance since there’s a grand prize you technically can win.

Now, you might say that you’re probably not going to do any of these sports. But between insurance companies, there are different standards as to what’s allowed, so always check your terms and conditions before you buy your travel insurance.

Lazy? Scroll up and you can read through our travel insurance reviews instead. We’ve scoured through policy wordings and terms and conditions for their outdoor adventure and extreme sports coverage.

3. What are the common personal accident and personal liability exclusions?

While some travel insurance seems to have a comprehensive coverage, you have to make sure that the activity that you are doing is covered under Personal Accident or Personal Liability.

For instance, if you got the Singlife travel insurance and decided to buy the Adventurous Water Sports rider as well, you will be covered for all the usual scuba diving (up to 40m), white water rafting, kayaking, yachting, wakeboarding etc.

You’ll have to scroll to the end of your policy wording to check out the terms and conditions. Singlife travel insurance states that it covers you for:

  • accidental death and permanent disablement
  • emergency medical cover
  • personal liability

In other words, if you get seriously injured during any of these activities, your Singlife travel insurance will cover emergency medical costs, your death, and any damage you caused to the properties in that accident.

However, if you were to look at Etiqa travel insurance , you’ll see that the plan covers you for personal accidental death. When it comes to personal liability, some outdoor activities are excluded, such as:

  • motorcycles, motor cars

These are exactly the kind of activities where you’re more likely to suffer an accident. So don’t forget to check the fine print!

4. Which outdoor activities are usually excluded?

Some activities will be covered by your travel insurance, but only if it’s within a specific circumstance. Again, this is not being unrealistic. But it does mean you have to be careful that your activities don’t exceed the boundaries set by your travel insurance. These are examples of some activities which aren’t covered by your insurance:

  • Canoeing or white water rafting without a qualified guide or Grade 4 and above (of the International Scale of River Difficulty).
  • Off-piste skiing, or going off trail and skiing outside the officially approved boundaries of a ski resort.
  • Mountaineering beyond the height of 3,000 metres above sea level. (Some insurers raise this limit to 3,500m or even higher—check the policy document for the specific figure.)
  • Underwater activities involving artificial breathing apparatus for diving deeper than 30 metres.

So while some of these activities are covered by certain travel insurance policies, they do have limits to their coverage. Be careful to stay within the stipulated boundaries.

5. How much do extreme sports riders cost?

Some travel insurance companies require that you upgrade your travel insurance plan to include winter sports rider or outdoor adventurous activities riders. Although it might seem unfair to incur a steep increase in the premium price, do note that most of the time, this increases your coverage for other categories within the same plan as well.

How much do these winter sports and sports riders cost?

Currently, there are 2 travel insurance plans that require you to buy sports riders:  Direct Asia travel insurance  and  Singlife travel insurance . The latter costs $8.38 per week for Adventurous Water Sports rider  or $8.13 per week for the Winter Sports rider.

6. Do you need sports equipment coverage?

If you’re a hardcore skier or diver, then this section should not be news for you. If you have your own sporting equipment that you intend to bring on the trip, you have to be aware how much your travel insurance is covering you. When your gear can cost a few hundred dollars, you’ll definitely want to invest in a plan that will insure you don’t lose out if your gear is stolen or damaged.

7. Do you have sufficient emergency medical evacuation coverage?

This is especially important if you’re planning to go scuba diving, hiking or skydiving. Since you’re most likely not going to be near any decent medical facilities should anything happen, you may need to get emergency medical evacuation.

Check to make sure your travel insurance policy covers you sufficiently for such an occasion. Where possible, choose policies that can give you at least $500,000 cover for medical evacuation, even if you end up paying a little more. Here are some that offer $500,000 or more:
