How to use Midjourney to generate AI images

The era of AI-generated artwork is upon us, and the internet is filled with users trying to create the perfect prompts to lead AIs to create just the right images – or sometimes, just the wrong ones. Sound like fun? One of the more common AI tools is Midjourney, which people use to create dreamlike landscapes and subjects with just a few words.

What You Need

If you’d like to experiment with Midjourney, we’ve got good news: It’s free to sign up, and you can start trying out the AI generator in just a few minutes. Here’s everything you need to know about using it for the first time.

How to start using Midjourney

Step 1: Make sure you have a Discord login . Though there is a dedicated site now, it is invite only. For the vast majority of us, Midjourney works entirely on Discord, so you’ll need an account there to use it. Signing up for Discord is also free if you haven’t done it yet.

Step 2: Visit the Midjourney website . Here, choose Join the beta . This will automatically take you to a Discord invite.

Step 3: Accept the Discord invite to Midjourney. Choose to Continue to Discord .

Step 4: Your Discord app will automatically open. When it does, select the ship-like Midjourney icon on the left menu.

Step 5: In the Midjourney channels, locate the Newcomer rooms. There will typically be a number of newcomer rooms open, with names like “newbies-108.” You can select any of these to begin.

Step 6: Now you’re ready to begin creating AI art. Before you get started, note that you only have a certain number of prompt options available as part of your free trial. You can create around 25 free images. After that, you’ll have to purchase a full membership to continue. If you would rather not spend any money, it’s a good idea to take some time and think about just what you want to create on Midjourney. If you want, you can type “/help” to get a list of tips to peruse.

Step 7: When ready, type “/imagine” in the Discord chat for your newbies room. This will create a prompt field where you can type the image description. The more precise that you can be with your description, the better the AI will be able to produce good results. Be descriptive, and if there’s a particular style that you are looking for, include it in your description. There are terms of conduct to follow here, but if you keep things clean, you shouldn’t have anything to worry about.

When finished, select Enter to send your prompt.

Step 8: Give Midjourney a minute to generate your images. Typically, the AI will create several different versions based on your description. You now have a number of options to continue.

Look below the images, and you’ll see a section of U and V buttons labeled 1 through 4. The numbers correspond to the four images that Midjourney produced. Choosing U will upscale that particular image into a larger, more defined version. Choosing V will create an all-new image based on the present image that you choose. You will also see a refresh button to the side to request a new set of images. Keep in mind that each of these choices will use up some of your available free prompts, so only do it if you are sure you want to proceed.

Step 9: Once you look at a single image, you'll still have some more options about how to alter it: * Vary — Creates four more images that will look somewhat like the selected image. * Zoom Out — Will shrink the image and generate more context-based imagery around it. * Arrows — Will "pan" the image and fill in newly exposed areas with context-based imagery. * Heart Symbol — Will favorite an image, to allow you to find the image easily in your Midjourney Gallery . * Web — Allows you to open the image directly in your Midjourney Gallery.

Step 10: If you plan on using a lot of Midjourney, you can use any bot channel in Midjourney’s Discord and type “/subscribe.” This will create a link that you can follow to pay for a subscription. Those who are really serious about using Midjourney in the long term will also want to take a look at the manual , which will provide you with a greater list of commands and some advice about how to create images.

Midjourney still reigns as an AI image generator. Here's how to use it

The commands you need to know, how to save and browse your images, and some of the capabilities of the generative ai tool.

There are plenty of apps you can turn to to generate pictures using artificial intelligence. Still, Midjourney remains one of the best and one of the most popular options, having launched in beta form in July 2022.

It’s not free to use: The price of admission starts at $10 a month or $96 a year, which gives you 3.3 hours of image generation time per month (images usually take around a minute to render). However, the quality of the end result may well tempt you into a subscription if you need a lot of AI art.

Assuming you’re ready to sign up (for a month at least), here’s how to get started with Midjourney—the commands you need to know, how to save and browse your images, and some of the capabilities of the generative AI tool.

Getting started

Midjourney works through Discord: You can join the Midjourney channel here , and you’ll need to sign up for a (free) Discord account if you don’t already have one. The next steps involve two bits of admin—agreeing to the Midjourney terms of service and signing up for one of the Midjourney subscription tiers. You’ll get a neat little table outlining the differences between each tier.

Midjourney does a decent job of explaining how everything works with all that out of the way. Unless you’re on one of the more expensive plans, you’ll be writing your prompts and getting your images through a channel that’s open to other users, so don’t be shy—it actually works well for getting inspiration from what other people are doing, and seeing what’s possible with the AI engine.

To begin with, you’ll need to get involved in one of the #newbie channels, which are clearly linked on the left of the web interface. Click to jump to any one of them and see what’s happening—look at how different art styles are described to get different results, from “abstract expressive” to “hyper-realistic” and everything in between.

The other online location you need to know about is the official Midjourney website . While all of your image generation is done on Discord, this website is where you can find an archive of all the pictures you’ve made and browse through some of the other artwork that’s proving popular on the Midjourney network. From here you’re also able to read about updates to Midjourney.

Writing prompts

Head to a #newbie channel, type “/imagine” followed by a space, and you’re ready to start prompting. If you’ve never used an AI image generator before, describe what you want to see: You can be as creative as possible, putting any kind of person or object in any kind of setting and using any kind of artwork style.

As usual with generative AI tools, the more specific and precise you can be, the better. However, you can be vague if you want to (it’s just less likely you’ll get something close to what you were imagining). See a watercolor of an elephant in a boat, or a photo of an apple on a table, it’s up to you.

After a few moments of thinking, you’ll get four generated images based on your prompt—if you want Midjourney to try again, click the re-roll button (the blue-and-white circle of arrows). If you like one of the images more than the others, you can click one of the V1 - V4 buttons to see four variations on it (the images are numbered from left to right and from top to bottom).

Click on any of the U1 - U4 buttons to take a closer look. Here, you get access to some editing features: You’re able to create new variations on all or just part of the image, zoom out on the image (and have AI fill out the canvas), or extend the image in any direction using the four arrow buttons. Click on any image to see it in full-size mode, then right-click to save it somewhere else.

Going further

You can add a variety of parameters to your prompts, and there’s a full list here . They can be used to change an image’s aspect ratio, create images that will tile, or create more varied results, for example. So, if you need a wide rather than square picture, you might append “—aspect 16:9" to the end of your prompt.

Also worth knowing about are the parameters “—cref” and “—sref”, both of which can be followed by a URL pointing at an image. Use the former (character reference) to show Midjourney a character you want to use in your pictures and the latter (style reference) to show Midjourney the style that you’d like your pictures to look like.

There are also a couple of other commands that you can use instead of “/imagine” on Discord. Use “/describe” to get Midjourney to return a text prompt based on an image you supply or “/blend” to have Midjourney combine up to five different images into something new. You can point to images on the web or upload them from your device.

Head to the Midjourney website to find all of your pictures and to download them whenever necessary—eventually, you’ll be able to generate images from here too, but the feature hasn’t been fully launched yet. You can use the filters on the right to sift through the artwork you’ve created, and it’s also possible to download multiple images at the same time or sort them into custom folders if required.

MidJourney v6 released — this new AI model brings photorealism to image generation

It can now create text on images

Artificial intelligence image generator MidJourney has released version 6 of its popular tool, allowing for longer prompts, greater levels of detail and even adding text to a photo.

MidJourney first entered open beta in July 2022 and has made rapid and impressive progress in the quality and accuracy of images with each subsequent release.

This release comes at a time when MidJourney is under increasing pressure from competitors including OpenAI’s DALL-E 3 which can generate text. Similarly, free tools from Meta and services like Leonardo also offer increasingly more control over image generation.

What is new in MidJourney v6?

The latest release of MidJourney includes a longer prompt length, more granular control over color and shading, text and the ability to fine-tune the output through a conversation with MidJourney in much the same way ChatGPT lets you refine DALL-E images.

The latest update has been in development for some time, with select groups of subscribers testing and comparing the output to improve the overall quality.

One of the most striking updates is in the way it interprets and understands prompts. For example, it can now understand nuances in both punctuation and grammar, telling the difference between eating, shooting and leaving.

Where can you access MidJourney v6?

Like all previous versions of MidJourney, version six is available through Discord. Once you’ve paid the subscription you’ll get access to the bot in messages where you can /imagine the creation of your choosing.

To access version six you’ll need to either select it as the default model in settings or append –v 6 to the end of any prompt. This will ensure it uses the correct model and still allow you to continue using version 5.2 by default.

MidJourney has started opening access to a web version for users that have generated more than 10,000 pictures. This includes the ability to change settings through different inputs rather than relying on the AI model to understand a single text prompt.

What do MidJourney v6 images look like?

To test out the latest version (which MidJourney stresses is still in alpha release and review mode) I set it a series of prompts and compared the output to the same prompt in v5.2.

Testing out the text

For the first prompt, I asked MidJourney v6 to create a poster for a movie called Moon Pups but it failed to add the text to the image.

I decided to be more explicit and tell it to include specific words, placing them in quotation marks for emphasis. That solved the problem, although MidJourney v6 has the same issue as DALL-E with spelling.

Side-by-side comparison

Next up I had MidJourney v5.2 (left) and MidJourney v6 (right) each generate an image from the same prompt to compare. I found that while v6 was richer in detail, v5.2 benefited from months of refinement and had more character.

The prompt: "wine taster peering through a wine glass."

Real people

Finally, I had both v5.2 (left) and v6 (right) create an image of a real person. Some AI models refuse to produce a picture of a living human including DALL-E but MidJourney doesn’t suffer from those same concerns. 

I had both create a picture of Elon Musk riding a unicorn. Neither was given any prompt refinement or further instructions. Version 5.2 created a cartoon-like depiction whereas version 6 looks like a photograph.

Realistic midjourney images.

On 28 August 2022 Midjourney released some new options for improving image quality that allow you to create much more realistic images.

Two new modes were released

• A general purpose artistic mode you can use by typing –test
• A photo-realism mode you can use by typing –testp

I wanted to share some of them, and also compare the same prompt showing the differences between the standard Midjourney image generator and the test versions.

Most of these images were upgraded using the –upbeta command.

Prompt: A human astronaut walking towards the towering gates of a mysterious alien city designed by HR Giger

Prompt: an astronaut exploring a red jungle on an alien planet

As you can see from these examples, compared with the standard Midjourney images the –test and –testp images are more realistic. But they also seem to lose a certain mysterious, artistic charm that the standard images have.

Nevertheless you get some beautiful results. Below are some of my favourite images so far created using the –test and –testp commands.

Why You Should Use Art & Photography Styles in MidJourney V5

We've marveled as MidJourney just keeps improving, but it's still hard to have precise control of what you get after your prompt is submitted. By starting off with an existing image, you can steer what sort of art you get.

In this guide, I assume you already know the basics of how to use MidJourney. If you don't, it's a good idea to read our MidJourney primer first.

Sending Your Image to The MidJourney Discord Bot

Assuming that you have an existing image that's close to what you want (e.g. a person in the right pose) you first need to send that image to the MidJourney Discord Bot.

Don't submit any sensitive or private images into the Discord chat with the MidJourney Discord bot. If you're using the cheapest tier of the MidJourney service which does not have "stealth" mode, your output images are public, and there's no guarantee that your source image won't ever end up where it shouldn't. Only ever send images in any chat app that you're 100% comfortable showing to anyone.

Using the Discord desktop app , simply upload your image using the "+" upload button, or drag and drop the image into the chat.

Getting the Image Link

Now that you've uploaded your image to the Discord servers and its visible in your chat, we need to extract the link pointing directly at the image file. To do this, right-click on the image and select "Copy link". (If you're on the mobile app, tap and hold the image, then select "Copy media link.") Be careful not to click "Copy image" since this copies the image itself to the clipboard rather than the hyperlink.

If you paste the contents of the clipboard into your chat box or any other text field, you'll see this long string ending in an image extension, in this case . JPG .

Constructing Your Prompt

Start your prompt the usual way by typing "/imagine" and then pressing the spacebar.

Now, paste the image link as the very first part of the prompt.

Now you can write the actual prompt. While you can write anything you like, the idea here is to write something that makes sense based on the image you uploaded. MidJourney will start with your image as the initial point rather than random noise, so in most cases you should get something that resembled the composition of your image.

In this case, I snapped a photo of one of my Star Trek models, and so for this prompt we'll go with "Starship Enterprise Star Trek flying in space epic concept art".

Don't submit the prompt yet, because we have to include two more important parameters.

Setting the Image Weight and Aspect Ratio

The image weight parameter tells MidJourney how closely it should stick to the original picture. The image weight parameter for MidJourney V5 (5.2 is the latest as of this writing) can range from 0-2. With an image weight of 2, the result will be strongly inspired by the image prompt, but something like 0.5 will only loosely inspire it.

Here we're going to add the parameter "--iw 2" at the end of our prompt.

Next, we'll specify the aspect ratio. MidJourney makes square images by default, but that's not always what you need. Our image prompt is square as well, but we're going to widen it to 16:9, which is the most common widescreen aspect ratio . To do this, we add "--ar 16:9" to the end of the prompt.

Now, finally, we're ready to submit.

This hasn't turned out very well at all! This is because the image weight setting is too high. So let's run the same prompt again, but this time at 1.5.

Much better! Let's try again at 0.5.

And now we have a pretty cool result!

Using image prompts isn't an exact science, and it's not like other generative AI techniques such as inpainting, but it does give you significantly more control over where MidJourney starts its process, making more creative choices possible.

• 1 It is the same as using multiple Image Prompts with /imagine ...
• 2 ...but with a much handier interface : you just drag/upload pictures from your computer (or phone) into dedicated slots—and hit Send.
• 3 You can blend up to 5 images via the new interface (if you need more: use /imagine and paste your images' public URLs in a row).
• 4 /blend 's interface doesn't allow a text part in prompt. :( /imagine with image URLs still does!

Image Prompts

You can use images as part of a prompt to influence a job's composition, style, and colors. images prompts can be used alone or with text prompts—experiment with combining images with different styles for the most exciting results..

To add images to a prompt, type or paste the web address where the image is stored online. The address must end in an extension like .png, .gif, or .jpg. After adding image addresses, add any additional text and parameters to complete the prompt.

Prompts must have multiple image prompts or a single image prompt and a text prompt to work. An image URL must be a direct link to an online image. Your file should end in .png, .gif, .webp, .jpg, or .jpeg. In most browsers, right-click or long-press an image and select Copy Image Address to get the URL. The /blend command is a simplified image prompting process optimized for mobile users.

• Upload images in your direct messages with the Midjourney Bot to prevent other server users from seeing an image.
• Image prompts and references are visible on the Midjourney website unless you're generating in Stealth Mode .

How to Use an Image in Your Prompt

1. upload an image to discord.

Follow these instructions to upload your image to Discord.

2. Copy your image's URL

*Discord Desktop App: Right-click on the image and select Copy Link (NOT "Copy Message Link").

• Discord Web App: Click to expand the image, then right-click and choose "Copy image address."
• Discord Mobile App: Tap and hold on the image, then select "Copy Media Link."

If none of these methods work, you can click to expand the image, and at the bottom, select "Open in Browser" so you can copy and paste the image's URL.

To incorporate an image into your prompt, you need a direct image link that ends with .png, .gif, .webp, .jpg, or .jpeg. If the image is on your computer or phone, you can send it as a message to the Midjourney Bot first to generate a link.

How To Upload Your Image

Add an image url to your prompt.

To add an image to a prompt, begin typing /imagine as usual. After the prompt box appears, drag the image file into the prompt box to add the image's URL, or right-click and paste the link within the prompt box.

How to upscale images in Midjourney for higher resolution and image quality

Midjourney can generate stunning images out of virtually thin air with the right text prompt. But if you look closely, you’ll notice that the images lack a lot of detail once you zoom in. It may seem especially obvious on larger displays, where images will quickly look pixelated or blurry once you start zooming in. So can we upscale Midjourney images to make better-looking AI-generated art and how far can the resolution go? Here’s everything you need to know about improving image quality in Midjourney.

To upscale images in Midjourney, you'll first need to isolate the image of your choice from the grid of four using the U1, U2, U3, or U4 buttons. Once isolated, you can click the Upscale (Subtle) or Upscale (Creative) buttons. Both options will double the resolution of your image. You can also use a third-party upscaling service to upscale your Midjourney images instead. Keep reading to learn more.

How do I upscale images to 4K in Midjourney?

What is the resolution of midjourney images.

In Midjourney and other AI image generators , upscaling means increasing the image’s resolution. But it’s not enough to edit images or stretch their dimensions to a large canvas. The upscaled picture must also have enough detail to not look pixelated or blurry on a high-definition display.

So how much resolution does a typical Midjourney image pack without upscaling? The answer’s simple: around one megapixel or 1024×1024. These AI-generated images will look fine on a smartphone screen. But once you zoom in or move the image to a larger display, you’ll quickly notice that it doesn’t look very detailed.

For context, most smartphones capture incredibly detailed images since virtually all cameras boast at least 12MP of resolution. That’s way higher resolution than even high-end televisions. The popular high-end 4K or 4096×2160 display resolution only translates to approximately eight megapixels. And most computer monitors are lower still, with 1080p translating to 2.1MP. Most of the streaming media we consume also gets delivered to us at these resolutions or higher.

With that in mind, Midjourney’s one-megapixel figure doesn’t seem so impressive. According to Midjourney’s docs , the V5 model’s default 1024×1024 output is equivalent to generating a lower-resolution image with the last-gen V4 model and then upscaling it. What if you need to upscale even further? Here’s how to do that.

How to upscale images in Midjourney: Subtle vs Creative

Whenever you generate a new image, Midjourney presents you with a grid of four images for each prompt (pictured above). Below this grid, you’ll find a series of buttons labeled U1, U2, U3, and U4. The letter U once stood for upscale but it’s now just a way to isolate the image from the rest of the grid. Still, clicking on one of these buttons is the first step in our upscaling journey. In the above example, we’ve clicked U4 and isolated the fourth image.

Once the image is isolated, the Midjourney bot will send it separately alongwith a new set of buttons. Among these, you’ll find the option to Upscale (Subtle) or Upscale (Creative) . Click on one of these buttons to upscale the image as pictured below.

So what’s the difference between Midjourney’s Subtle vs Creative upscale modes? It’s pretty straightforward: Subtle will simply double the resolution of the image without changing its style. Creative, on the other hand, may add or remove certain elements from the image while also doubling the size.

Keep in mind that using the upscaler will eat into your GPU allowance, which can be as little as 10 hours per month if you’re on the cheapest Midjourney plan . According to Midjourney’s docs, doubling the resolution will take twice as much time as generating a standard four-image grid. This makes using it a rather expensive proposition.

With previous versions of Midjourney, you could click an “Upscale to Max” button to boost image resolution far beyond the initial 512×512 preview. That option no longer exists as of Midjourney V5 or V6. That said, you can go up to 2x the original resolution, which nets you a 2048 x 2048 px image or slightly under than the 4K video resolution you may be familiar with.

So is there a way to upscale images beyond what Midjourney is capable of? Yes, there is a whole host of upscaling AI tools you can use. Here’s a short list of the best options:

• Gigapixel AI : If you’re looking for the best possible result, we believe you can’t go wrong with Topaz Labs’ Gigapixel AI . It’s a pro-grade image upscaler, however, so it does come at a cost. Still, you can check out the free trial to see if it meets your needs. It can upscale up to 600%, so it would result in a 6144×6144 image when used with Midjourney’s output, an upscale result above 4K.
• chaiNNer : Need to upscale an image for your own use? You probably don’t need a pro-grade upscaler in that case. chaiNNer is an open-source project that you can download and use for free. It’s not as simple to use, but the GitHub page has instructions to get started.
• Let’s Enhance : Unlike the previous two upscalers, Let’s Enhance doesn’t need you to download an app. To upscale a Midjourney image to 4K, for example, you simply need to upload the picture and wait a few minutes. You can upscale 10 images for free and subscribe to a plan after that.

You may also want to consider trying out a different AI image generator. In our comparison of Midjourney vs. Stable Diffusion , we found that the latter offers more customization options, including the ability to generate higher-resolution images.

Once you’ve upscaled your image in Midjourney, you can use its nifty Zoom Out feature to effectively change the virtual focal length. If you’re an anime fan, give Midjourney’s Niji Mode a try.

In the latest version of Midjourney, the highest possible resolution is fixed at 1024×1024. Clicking on one of the four upscale buttons does not currently upsample or upscale the image.

To upscale a Midjourney image for printing, I’d recommend using a third-party upscaler like Gigapixel AI or chaiNNer. Midjourney offers a built-in upscaler, but using it will count towards your limited monthly allowance.

There are plenty of apps you can turn to to generate pictures using artificial intelligence. Still, Midjourney remains one of the best and one of the most popular options, having launched in beta form in July 2022.

It’s not free to use: The price of admission starts at $10 a month or $96 a year, which gives you 3.3 hours of image generation time per month (images usually take around a minute to render). However, the quality of the end result may well tempt you into a subscription if you need a lot of AI art.

Assuming you’re ready to sign up (for a month at least), here’s how to get started with Midjourney—the commands you need to know, how to save and browse your images, and some of the capabilities of the generative AI tool.

Getting started

Midjourney works through Discord: You can join the Midjourney channel here , and you’ll need to sign up for a (free) Discord account if you don’t already have one. The next steps involve two bits of admin—agreeing to the Midjourney terms of service and signing up for one of the Midjourney subscription tiers. You’ll get a neat little table outlining the differences between each tier.

Midjourney does a decent job of explaining how everything works with all that out of the way. Unless you’re on one of the more expensive plans, you’ll be writing your prompts and getting your images through a channel that’s open to other users, so don’t be shy—it actually works well for getting inspiration from what other people are doing, and seeing what’s possible with the AI engine.

To begin with, you’ll need to get involved in one of the #newbie channels, which are clearly linked on the left of the web interface. Click to jump to any one of them and see what’s happening—look at how different art styles are described to get different results, from “abstract expressive” to “hyper-realistic” and everything in between.

The other online location you need to know about is the official Midjourney website . While all of your image generation is done on Discord, this website is where you can find an archive of all the pictures you’ve made and browse through some of the other artwork that’s proving popular on the Midjourney network. From here you’re also able to read about updates to Midjourney.

Writing prompts

Head to a #newbie channel, type “/imagine” followed by a space, and you’re ready to start prompting. If you’ve never used an AI image generator before, describe what you want to see: You can be as creative as possible, putting any kind of person or object in any kind of setting and using any kind of artwork style.

As usual with generative AI tools, the more specific and precise you can be, the better. However, you can be vague if you want to (it’s just less likely you’ll get something close to what you were imagining). See a watercolor of an elephant in a boat, or a photo of an apple on a table, it’s up to you.

After a few moments of thinking, you’ll get four generated images based on your prompt—if you want Midjourney to try again, click the re-roll button (the blue-and-white circle of arrows). If you like one of the images more than the others, you can click one of the V1 - V4 buttons to see four variations on it (the images are numbered from left to right and from top to bottom).

Click on any of the U1 - U4 buttons to take a closer look. Here, you get access to some editing features: You’re able to create new variations on all or just part of the image, zoom out on the image (and have AI fill out the canvas), or extend the image in any direction using the four arrow buttons. Click on any image to see it in full-size mode, then right-click to save it somewhere else.

Going further

You can add a variety of parameters to your prompts, and there’s a full list here . They can be used to change an image’s aspect ratio, create images that will tile, or create more varied results, for example. So, if you need a wide rather than square picture, you might append “—aspect 16:9" to the end of your prompt.

Also worth knowing about are the parameters “—cref” and “—sref”, both of which can be followed by a URL pointing at an image. Use the former (character reference) to show Midjourney a character you want to use in your pictures and the latter (style reference) to show Midjourney the style that you’d like your pictures to look like.

There are also a couple of other commands that you can use instead of “/imagine” on Discord. Use “/describe” to get Midjourney to return a text prompt based on an image you supply or “/blend” to have Midjourney combine up to five different images into something new. You can point to images on the web or upload them from your device.

Head to the Midjourney website to find all of your pictures and to download them whenever necessary—eventually, you’ll be able to generate images from here too, but the feature hasn’t been fully launched yet. You can use the filters on the right to sift through the artwork you’ve created, and it’s also possible to download multiple images at the same time or sort them into custom folders if required.

10 Ways to Prompt Photorealistic Cars in Midjourney

Before you jump to conclusions – Midjourney or another AI tool is not a replacement for true photography, and even to a larger extent, CGI. This new wave of AI tools whether it be Midjourney, Dall-E, ChatGPT, Microsoft OpenAI or even Google’s Bard just represents the beginning and can be very useful.

I’m a digital artist at heart and I’ve been doodling since I was old enough to hold a pencil. My mind is constantly filled with ideas that are lost to myself and the world if I don’t do anything with them. Midjourney serves two purposes for me as a creative: a tool to quickly process my ideas into visual representations, and to help build concepts for myself and clients that save a lot of time. I might post these concepts to social media, but I don’t claim them to be photos and I don’t hide behind them being renders from AI, and neither should you.

It's my personal recommendation that Midjourney and any other AI tool is used to help you improve your own workflow, design concepts, or a just to have fun with. Below you will find examples of prompts I’ve used to generate near photorealistic.

Update - March 21, 2023 - Version 5 Midjourney is available

Midjourney has updated to Version 5, which has major improvements upon the last version. My initial review is much better accuracy, color and resolution. If the system is not rendering in version 5 for you, you can add “—v 5” at the end of you prompt. Example below.

Example #1. Red BMW E30

Prompt: red e30 BMW M3 at sunset, photography, real, realistic, 8k, bbs, snow, mountains, photorealistic, ultra detailed, --v 4 Tip: If you subscribe to Midjourney, create yourself a private Discord channel and invite the Midjourney Bot to your channel. This will give you a clutter free space to imagine all you want without it getting lost in the mix. Note: This image was generated after using several image prompts from my Cinnabar E30 photo set and rerolled after without the image prompts. Example #2. Toyota 4Runner in the Mountains

Prompt: black toyota 4runner in the forest, mount rainier, muddy, photography, real, realistic, 8k, bbs, snow, mountains, photorealistic, ultra detailed, --v 4 Tip: Use Image Prompts to train Midjourney. When you post an image link in the prompt, you’re giving the AI tool more data to work with. You can use multiple images in each prompt for better learning. It’s been my experience that it doesn’t always create photorealistic images this way, but continuing to feed it this information, it improves with each pass.

Example #3 Midnight Purple R34 Skyline

Prompt: dark purple nissan skyline gtr in a neon city at night, shot with a sony mirrorless, 35mm, photography, cinematic, anti-aliasing, CGI, --v 4 Tip: Rerolls! Don’t be shy about rerolling to get more options. Some of the examples here were rerolled several times to iron out setting, style, and features. Select a variation that you like, and you can even reroll those until you land on a final selection.

Example #4 Aston Martin DB9 in London

Prompt: photo of an aston martin db9, in london, at night, shot on a Sony mirrorless camera, DSLR, 50mm lens f/2.8, ultra detailed, 8k, --v 4 Tip: Use real-world details, equipment, and settings to better define that “realistic” look. Use keywords for actual locations like “London” and equipment like cameras or lenses such as “Sony Alpha A7R” and “50mm Lens f/2.8” to provide the AI tool with more information on how to process the render.

Example #5 Porsche 911 in Miami

Prompt: photo of a porsche 911 in miami, sunset, neon, shot on a Sony mirrorless camera, DSLR, 50mm lens f/2.8, ultra detailed, 8k, --v 4 Tip: Weight your prompt keywords by importance . If you’re looking to use an image prompt and want your render to be a close replication of that, put it first, or near the beginning. Otherwise weight the prompt keywords based on what’s most important to you. In the example above, I weight the location and lighting (via sunset) as the priority. The “neon” keyword provides additional coloring and the remaining keywords help apply the photorealistic style of the render.

Example #6 Mazda RX-7 (or something like it?)

Prompt: a photo of a 90s JDM Mazda RX-7 FD3S at night, neon lights, rain, particles, shot on a Sony mirrorless, DSLR, --v 4 Tip: Not every render is going to be an exact representation. When attempting to render a Mazda RX-7 FD3S, you can see that its clearly pulling in elements from a Miata and even other makes and models (maybe even a Dodge Viper?). If you’re a car person, or sharing these with car enthusiasts, they will notice so be careful what you attempt to pass.

Example #7 Honda NSX in Kyoto Cherry Blossoms

Prompt: Black Honda NSX in kyoto at sunset, rain, cherry blossoms, reflection, side profile, sunset, photography, 8k, realistic, shot on sony mirrorless camera, ultra detailed, photorealistic, --v 4 Tip: Don’t forget the mood! Provide context to the tool by giving it a mood to work with. Some great examples are time of day (Sunset, Night), Time of the year (Fall, Winter, etc), Background lighting like (Neon, Mist, Fog) are all good indicators of setting the mood.

Example #8 Ford Raptor in the dunes

Prompt: photo of a Ford F-150 Raptor racing in a sand dune, sunset, motion, shot on a Sony mirrorless camera, DSLR, 85mm lens f/8, ultra detailed, 8k, --v 4 Tip: Avoid text, logos and emblems whenever possible. As powerful as Midjourney and other AI tools are – they lack the ability to do text and/or characters. If you’re using image prompts for sources, expect that big grills like “TOYOTA” or “FORD” will look like characters from a Sci-Fi movie. In the sample above, I used a combination of a render + photoshop to make the grill correct.

Example #9 Audi R8

Prompt: photo of an Audi R8, sunset, shot on Sony mirrorless camera, DSLR, 35mm lens f/2.8, ultra detailed, 8k, --v 4 Tip: Avoid upscaling resolution (for now). The new standard for rending prompts is “- - v 4” which is the latest and greatest rendering quality at the time of this post (typically 1024x1024px). Midjourney offers beta upscaling and others such as “- - testp” to attempt photorealistic images in a higher resolution. Use at your own discretion, but it’s my own experience and opinion to avoid it for now.

Example #10 Ferrari LaFerrari

Prompt: photo of a Ferrari LaFerrari in Rome, sunrise, shot on a Sony Mirrorless camera, DSLR, 85mm lens f/4, ultra detailed, 8k, --v 4 Tip: Prepare yourself to have to edit in Photoshop to finalize. Because of all the reasons above, sometimes the AI tool just won’t give you exactly what you want. You might need to clone out a badly rendered emblem, fix a wheel that a reroll or variation will not.

Go nuts and experiment! That’s the beauty of this tool and you should not be afraid to learn and use it. If anything, use it just to get a better understanding of what it can and can’t do.
