An amazing day on board Kittiwake to Lundy island. Dave and Jenson so knowledgeable, fantastic skippers and we loved their environmental ethos. A fabulous day - swimming with playful seals, seeing dolphins, visiting beautiful Lundy and a pint in the pub! 100% recommend - if you’ve been thinking about doing this do it! Life’s too short- say “Yes” more!
Absolutely brilliant experience! The father and son that took us out for our boat trip today went above and beyond to make sure we all enjoyed ourselves. They were warm and welcoming. They even let our two 7 year old boys steer the boat which is every little boys dream. Even when I felt a little seasick, they offered for me to steer the boat which was a huge help! Would highly recommend!
Absolutely amazing trip this afternoon for my partner and 2 children (3 and 6). Lovely boat which felt very comfortable and safe for children. Felt very intimate and personal experience- lending us jackets when needed, speaking to all the guests, offering sweets to children. Very knowledgeable and friendly crew members who clearly value all their customers and take pride in their work. Couldn’t recommend this trip highly enough. Thank you all.

Excellent trip with Wild Frontier charters. Easy to book on the website. Website clear on what to bring with you. You wait near the pier and then a crew member with come and get you. Slightly different departure times due to tides so read your email. Clear safety briefing at the start. All wetsuits and masks were in good condition. Swimming with seals was great, although slightly cold! The boat was modern and even had a lift to get you out the water. Tea and coffee on board. Approx 2.5 hours on Lundy island. A well organised trip and company.
Went on a fishing trip with these guys and what a great trip. Never been fishing before so didn’t have a clue what I was doing and the crew couldn’t be more helpful, talked me though everything I need to know and provided everything we needed. We even go some really big pollock for our tea. We will 100% be back. Thank you 😊😊
Great trip, enjoyed every minute and can't wait to book again. Friendly crew couldn't be more helpful.
What an amazing experience snorkelling with the seals in Gannets Bay, Lundy. The boat was really comfortable and the crew were so professional and helpful. The seals were so friendly and really wanted to play. It was such a wonderful day. I would do it again in a heartbeat.
This is an incredible experience and I would 100% recommend!!! We left at 9am and arrived back just before 6pm so a full day experience. It takes about 1h45 to get to lundy Island and once you get there it's time to swim with the seals! This was amazing!!! They are so curious and friendly and it's nice to see them in their natural environment. The crew were very chilled and friendly and let us spend as long as we wanted here. We swum for about 45 minutes and enjoyed every second!! You can pay to use equipment provided by the company. I chose to hire a wetsuit as it said it was a 5mm Wetsuit, however, it was only a 3mm so this was a little disappointing! You can also hire snorkels, masks, fins etc. All equipment is in a really good condition! The boat itself is well maintained and has a toilet which is handy, also once you get back on board, the crew offer to make you a tea or coffee which is very welcomed! After this, you get dropped at lundy Island and we had about 3 hours to spend here. This was another fabulous part of the day! There's a pub on lundy and a museum and lots of walking so I'd recommend walking shoes (we wore trainers and this was fine).
We went snorkelling with the seals on Lundy Island with Wild Frontiers and the whole experience was fantastic, swimming with the seals exceeded all expectations. The seals were curious and came to you, one had his flipper tapping my arm. It was an amazing experience. The crew were so helpful and kind, the boat functional and built for the job. The equipment was first class - all in all an unforgettable experience.
Swimming with seals We went swimming with seals to Lundy Island with Wild Frontiers on the 23rd September on a private charter. This was a fabulous experience, from leaving ilfracombe harbour with the two crew on board who were exceptionally helpful. The seals were so inquisitive and friendly.... nibbling at my fins, swimming all around me for the whole hour that I was with them. An unforgettable experience that I can highly recommend. Thanks a million
Brilliant time on the 2 hour reef fishing. Kev the captain and his mate (can't recall name) were great and really helped my boys and all others. Kids came away so happy and so pleased with the trip. Would recommend and use again
ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT !! This company goes over and above to please their customers and I cannot recommend them highly enough. My sisters and I had recently organised a special event but the weather was looking to stop it going ahead but wild frontiers pulled all the stops to make sure it did go ahead. We can’t thank them enough - not many companies would have gone to the lengths they did. Don’t bother going anywhere else - these guys will make sure you have a fantastic experience 👍
Absolutely rose above all expectations i had of mackerel fishing. We went out for 90 minutes and not only did Kev bring the humour to the trip, he also made sure we caught plenty of fish ! The whole trip was 10/10 and kev even made sure my Nan got her cup of tea. Thank-you for making our trip to Devon memorable and making sure we had fresh mackerel for dinner. Would recommend to anyone visiting the area, whether you like fishing or not !
Swimming with seals on Lundy, such an epic adventure. The crew were lovely, they went above and beyond to assist a pal who had a booking issue. As for the swimming, it was way beyond my expectations. the Seals were very relaxed, and inquisitive (we did not approach them, they came to us) and for a full hour we experienced them face to face. One swim was enough for us (I was in a summer wet suit, and used to cold water swimming, but should have probably taken a winter one as its mainly just bobbing about, rather than swimming) so we then popped onto Lundy for a brief look around, food and G&T at the pub. worth every pound! Awesome day out.
A great day out with a brilliant crew. An almost 2 hour trip to Lundy from Ilfracombe a bit “ bumpy “ to say the least but we’ll worth it. The seals were great very inquisitive & great fun to watch being with them in the water. The wetsuits they supplied were very good & other equipment looked good as well. Boat was comfortable with toilet and seating for about 12. Crew were great & very informative. In the water for about 40 minutes could have stayed longer but got a bit chilly then dropped off onto the island for 2-3 hours to explore. Cafe & pub on island (card only) Some lovely walks & interesting buildings including an old lighthouse that you can climb 147 steps to the top amazing views. Highly recommend this company & trip.
Brilliant Mackerel fishing trip today with our 13 year old grandson Jack. A great catch and able to take fish away with us. Thank you for a fun time.
elizabeth c
Took my son on the 4 hour deep sea and it was amazing. Kev the skipper was very knowledgeable and worked hard so everyone on board caught fish. Highly recommend.
Great and friendly service. Everything sorted for you, had a good session on a four hour trip, catching Dogfish, Conger Eel and losing a big Bull Huss at the net! Would definitely recommend if in the area!

Lundy Island Cruises
It is difficult to pin down why Lundy Island has such an effect on people. It is true that Lundy is different from any other island and that it is a wonderful part of the country. Situated off the coast of North Devon, where the Atlantic ocean meets the Bristol Channel with nothing between it and America, natural beauty, remote and tranquil, without roads, cars or pollution.
Visitors can enter a cave once used to hold prisoners, climb to the highest lighthouse in Britain, inspect the Georgian cannons which fired every ten minutes in fog, see the Lundy cabbage which grows nowhere else in the world. There is also the unique flora and fauna, sika deer, soay sheep, Lundy ponies, goats, seals and an array of birdlife. All this while enjoying the magnificent views
The Voyage to Lundy – Late March until the end of October is when the Islands own handsome and graceful passenger and supply vessel MS Oldenburg carries both day and staying visitors from Bideford or Ilfracombe .
Season by season, from dawn to dusk the visitor on Lundy is offered endless interest and delight.

First Lundy trip of 2017: Wednesday 31st May
Explore lundy day trip, with lundy diving.
Lundy has been a pioneer for the UK’s marine conservation for over 40 years. In 1971, the waters around the Island were designated as the first Voluntary Marine Nature Reserve, and then in 1986 this became the first Statutory Marine Nature Reserve. In 2000, the first No Take Zone in the UK was placed along Lundy’s east coast, and within this area nothing (particularly plants and animals) may be taken or added – up to the high water mark along the shoreline. 2010 saw Lundy’s Marine Nature Reserve become the UK’s first Marine Conservation Zone (MCZ), specifically for the protection of the Spiny lobster, also known as a Crawfish, which is very rare. When you sail with Obsession II, you are making a WiSe choice, as we are accredited as a Wildlife Safari Safe Operator , both locally by the joint Lundy Island / North Devon Biosphere scheme and nationally as a member of the WiSe Wildlife Safe Operator scheme.
A typical trip sees us departing Ilfracombe Harbour between 8.00 and 10.00, for the 20 mile passage to Lundy Island. All you need to do is sit back, relax and keep your eyes peeled for the local wildlife. Sea birds are plentiful, and seals, dolphins and porpoises are regularly sighted on the journey. Once we have arrived at the Island, our trip will take two parts. Depending on tide and weather, we may begin by taking you on a wildlife sea safari, down the coast of Lundy, or we may come alongside the jetty so that you may disembark and spend a few hours exploring on land. Either way, you will have time on Lundy and a chance to experience its charms and diverse wildlife from the sea.
Wildlife by Sea Safari: This part of your trip will see you travelling around Lundy, with one of our main aims being to visit the resident population of Atlantic Grey Seals (and if we are lucky, some visiting Harbour Seals as well!). Our experienced skipper and crew will point out all the seals, sea birds and any other wildlife, both on the land and in the water, and the more curious of the seals may even come up for a closer look at the very familiar boat. During the puffins' nesting season, we'll take you into Jenny's Cove, where we'll help you spot these fantastic little birds as they dart in and out of their holes, or perhaps you'll even be lucky enough to see them airborne.
On Lundy Island: The length of time you will have ashore will be tide and weather dependant, but typically will be around 5-6 hours. This gives you plenty of freedom to explore the unique topography of the Island, and to enjoy the hospitality offered by the Lundy residents, who are all willing and able to give information and help you during your time with them. At a mere three miles long, and half a mile wide, Lundy rises 400 feet above sea level and is a place of outstanding natural beauty with tremendous views of England, Wales and the Atlantic. With nothing but sea between her and America, she was the last refuge for many a sailing ship bound for the 'New World', and has many stories to tell of days gone by. Activities on the Island range from the adventurous (such as rock climbing) to the relaxing (sitting and basking in the tranquility), with plenty in between. We can help arrange your day should you require, or just check out the notice board in the Marisco Tavern to see what's on offer during the day.

Lundy Island Day Trip: Everything You Need to Know
Lundy Island is a little secret that we discovered during the staycation summer of 2020. It somehow isn’t that famous outside of the region, despite it being one of the most naturally beautiful places I’ve ever seen in the UK, if not the whole of Europe.
Sitting at the meeting point of the Bristol Channel and the Atlantic Ocean, Lundy Island has a unique array of wildlife, including a seal colony and puffins, which have become a Lundy island symbol. The cliffs of the island offer epic views at every angle, and the pathways on the top of the island give an impression of a rugged moor, despite the entire island only being 5 kilometres in length.
Then there’s its history. It turns out, a solitary island in such a strategic place (on the way to Bristol, which is a city with a lot of naval history) can be immensely rich in history. It’s been home to a hotbed of smugglers, an outpost for King Charles I, the home of a lawbreaking family and was even occupied by a group of Moroccan pirates for five years!
Don’t worry – since Victorian times, it has enjoyed a much more serene lifestyle as a nature reserve and holiday destination. You can stay overnight on Lundy Island, but it’s also feasible to visit on a day trip from Ilfracombe. Just a word of warning though – you’ll leave wishing you had more time!
Table of Contents
How to get to Lundy Island
In the summer months, a ferry leaves Ilfracombe to Lundy Island three times a week at 10am. Occasionally it will also leave from the town of Bideford. It takes two hours to reach the island, and returns at 4pm. That does mean that you spend the same amount of time on the ferry as on the island. It’s not enough time to see the island in all its glory, but it is worth it.
Ilfracombe is a two hour drive from Plymouth, an hour and a half drive from Exeter and a two hour 15 minute drive from Bristol. If you’re driving from London, expect to be in the car for at least 4 hours and 15 minutes.
Wherever you are coming from, a large part of your journey will be on country roads. If you are travelling to Ilfracombe in the morning, allow extra time for hold ups on these roads – it’s not unusual at all to get stuck behind tractors or other slow moving vehicles.
Here is some more information about booking the ferry to Lundy Island .
What is the Lundy Island ferry like?
The Lundy Island ferry is large, with inside and outside seating areas. There is a small bar, where you can purchase drinks and snacks. There is also a male and female toilet. These seas can be quite rough, but the ferry is sturdy enough to make it a smooth crossing.
Tours to Lundy Island
You can take part in a few Lundy Island tours that include some time on the island. On our second trip to the island, we did a snorkelling with seals tour , which included some time in the water and about an hour and a half on the island.
This boat was a lot smaller, and the crossing wasn’t as pleasant (definitely take some sea sickness tablets if you’re at all prone to motion sickness), but the experience of snorkelling with the playful seals was extraordinary.
Helicopter to Lundy Island
In the winter, Lundy Island day trips are still possible. You can take a helicopter to the island, which takes a mere 15 minutes! From this vantage point, you’ll be able to get some of the most exemplary views of this unique place.
Is it worth staying overnight on Lundy Island?
The day trip to Lundy is quite short, and there is a lot to explore on this island, especially if you get a fine day. Bearing that in mind, I would recommend staying on Lundy Island, if you have time and your finances allow. However, there is only limited accommodation on the island and it sells out quickly.
If you can’t stay for any reason, or if there is no accommodation available, then I would say it is still worth doing the Lundy Island day trip. Most people do actually end up visiting just for the day, because there is boat capacity but not accommodation capacity!
If you do want to look at staying on Lundy Island, check out the accommodation availability here.
Things to do on Lundy Island
Ranger walk.
To learn about Lundy’s unique history, fauna and geology, do a free ranger walk. Your informative guide will tell you everything they know about the island (and it’s a lot), while walking from the pier to the village, around the southern side of the cliff. Rangers meet each boat as they come in, usually with a tour sign. The tours are completely free.
Hiking around the island
The ranger walk will only take you around the bottom of the island, so be sure to spend some time walking around the rest of it too! Look out for watch huts, cannons, and other mementos of its history, as well as plenty of wildlife. On a clear day, you can see all the way back to North Devon ’s coastline.
Small museum
There is a small museum with more information about Lundy Island’s history opposite the shop in the village.
Boat trip around the island
You probably won’t be able to do this during a Lundy Island day trip, but if this guide has persuaded you to spend more time there, boat trips around the island run, which discuss its unique position and why each side has a different story.
Independent snorkelling
If the weather is warm, you might be tempted to take to the water. British seas aren’t the most welcoming in the world, but with a diverse range of fish and other sea life, plus the potential opportunity to sea a seal (don’t swim too far out if you don’t have a boat though) makes it much more tempting!
Lundy Island was made for sunbathing – with virtually no shade, there are plenty of places to stretch out and catch some rays, both on the beaches and at the top of the cliffs! Make sure you whack on your SPF though – this is England, but sunburn is still a danger.
Lighthouse views
The Old Light is a famous Lundy Island lighthouse with two deckchairs where the light was once located; so you can sit up here and enjoy the views for a while! As you’d expect, you must tackle a steep winding staircase to get to this point.
St Helen’s Church
Even on an island as small as Lundy, there is still a church. This is what the small community of Lundy Island opted to spend 400 on in 1897! The church has some interesting exhibitions of life on Lundy, and the outside makes for some good photos.
Letterboxing
There are 27 points around Lundy Island, and each has a stamp that you can add to your letterboxing book (purchasable at the shop). If you get all 27 stamps, you’ll earn a certificate. This might be a bit challenging to complete on a Lundy Island day trip, but if you end up staying longer, it may be a challenge worth accepting!
Send a post card
Lundy Island has its very own private postal system (the oldest one in the world!), and its stamps have forfeited the queens portrait for a very cute puffin photo. The island also has its own postmark, so do send yourself or a loved one a postcard while you’re here. It may take a few days to reach the mainland (more if there are storms), but it’s a great memento of your trip! Postcards and stamps can be purchased from the shop.
Eating on Lundy Island
There’s only one option: the Marisco Tavern, Lundy Island’s only pub. You can sit inside or in the beer garden, and order from their fairly diverse menu, which includes some vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options.
You can also purchase food from their surprisingly well stocked shop, or of course bring your own food with you.
When to visit Lundy Island
As it is such an outdoorsy place, it makes sense to do Lundy Island when the weather should be warm and sunny. Generally, it is best from May to September. But this is England, and storms can still rage in the summer!
Lundy Island is unfortunately prone to bad storms, so your day trip may be cancelled if there is one that will make the sea crossing dangerous (you should hear about this the night before).
The winter has a higher chance of storms, but Lundy is still open for tourism, as long as you are prepared to get a helicopter over rather than the boat.
Where to stay in Ilfracombe
After your Lundy Island day trip, you might be looking for somewhere to spend the night nearby. Here are some places to stay in Ilfracombe:
Budget Hotel: The Avoncourt Lodge is an Ilfracombe-based B&B. Each room has an en-suite and other mod cons. You’ll be able to enjoy a delicious breakfast each day, and there are beautiful grounds to stroll around. Click here for more information and to reserve your spot.
Mid Range Hotel: Rocky Cove Bed and Breakfast is a cosy guesthouse with bright, sunny rooms and spacious en-suites. A flat screen TV is installed in all rooms. Click here for rates and to reserve.
Luxury Hotel: Carlton Hotel has huge rooms with super comfy beds, plush carpets and plenty of space. A full English breakfast is available each morning, and there is a bar, restaurant and fitness centre on site. Click here for more information and to book your stay!
Where to go next
You might be visiting Lundy Island as a day trip from Bristol , Plymouth or Exeter . But if you are spending longer in the North Devon region, there are loads of beautiful places to visit.
Don’t miss Clovelly , a historic fishing village. You could also hop over the border to the chilled out surf town of Bude and surrounding places .
There’s also the charming village of Appledore and the resort town Westward Ho! A bit further along, the beaches of Woolacombe and Croyde are some of the best in the country.
Heading east, Exmoor is an expansive national park with plenty to offer. Lynmouth has been dubbed ‘Little Switzerland’ due to its charming mountain views, and the Valley of Rocks is an excellent hike near its nearby village, Lynton. These two villages are connected by the country’s last water-powered funicular.
On the moors, there are plenty of hikes. Try trekking up to Dunkery Beacon, or hiking from the picturesque village of Porlock to Porlock Weir.
