Filming ‘The College Tour’ at Jacksonville University marks homecoming for host Alex Boylan
By Emily Bloch, The Florida-Times Union I April 11, 2022
Gathered outside behind the Howard Administration Building, about two dozen students wearing Jacksonville University shirts and big smiles awaited cues from film director Bob Jury.
He waves his hands animatedly and calls out, “We’re rolling, big enthusiasm, here we go.” It marked day eight of filming for the school’s feature in “ The College Tour ,” an Amazon Prime series that spotlights colleges and universities around the country.
For the show’s host and executive producer Alex Boylan, this episode marked a special homecoming. Boylan is a JU dolphin himself, graduating in 1999.
“Coming back to film my alma mater, words cannot describe it,” he said. “JU has made me who I am to this day. Some of my best friends are students I went to college with. It’s been so meaningful.”
Boylan created “The College Tour,” which is now filming its fifth season, out of necessity after struggling to tour college campuses with his niece during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The mission is to tell the story of college education,” Boylan told the Times-Union. “How do you do that with 2,500 campuses across the country? We try to be as diverse as possible [with a range of campus sizes and student populations].”
Other Florida schools featured on ‘The College Tour’
Jacksonville University is a private, liberal arts university with a population of about 4,000 students. Other Florida schools featured on “The College Tour” include Florida Atlantic University, Florida International University, the University of Central Florida and Florida Tech.
Boylan describes the episode’s production as a collaborative effort between the school and his team.
“This is a six-month process to make one episode,” he said. “There’s two months of pre-production with teams meeting weekly, then on-location for almost two weeks and then post-production for two months. Then marketing and distribution — it’s a journey … we’re just finding great stories and bringing them to you.”
What to expect from The Jacksonville University episode
The Jacksonville University episode will feature a range of mini-profiles on current students, school leaders and alumni, all in the hopes of portraying a school’s vibe through viewers’ screens.
Students to be featured on this episode of “The College Tour” include a star lacrosse player, a sailing student with Olympic potential, a violinist, shark researcher and student organizers.
Sommer Kinsler, 19, is a freshman at JU who is being featured in the episode. She singlehandedly organized a Black History Month celebration this year on campus that has been lauded by school leaders.
“She wanted to do all the things and here she is. She hit the ground running at JU,” said school spokeswoman Laura Phelps.
As the group works on filming the episode’s intro and outro segments, Boylan chats with students. Show producers remark how he’s needed to do fewer takes than usual. He says it’s because this episode is personal and that he practiced the script 10 times more than he usually would.
“I’m usually on location two-to-three hours and out. This week, it’s been eight days,” he said. “It’s fun seeing the students and seeing them get nervous about being on TV. I just tell them ‘you’ve got this. It’s going to be weird, a bunch of people staring at you. But it’ll be great.'”
He adds, “that’s the key to television — big smiles and be happy.”
The one-hour episode is expected to air this summer.

Kinsler, who is from a small town in Georgia, said she was excited to share her experience with viewers of the show.
"The support system we have on campus, they want you to be a leader and to feel like you can achieve those things," she said.
Boylan said stories like Kinsler's are what sets the show apart.
"Each story is really the student. It’s not scripted, it’s not marketing," he said. "It’s telling their story and what their life is like. What we want is peers documenting peers. Everyone knows what it’s like to be in college — we’re just getting them to open up and tell their stories."
As the group works on filming the episode's intro and outro segments, Boylan chats with students. Show producers remark how he's needed to do fewer takes than usual. He says it's because this episode is personal and that he practiced the script 10 times more than he usually would.

UA Little Rock Graduate Finishes Degree Two Decades After Leaving College

A University of Arkansas at Little Rock graduate has finished her long-held goal of completing her bachelor’s degree more than 20 years after she first started college.
Juscenta Parker, a single mother of three and grandmother of six from Jacksonville, first started at UA Little Rock right after high school. She left the university in 2001 to take care of her oldest son and is now excited and ecstatic to be graduating cum laude.
“I decided to return to college to pursue finishing my first bachelor’s degree,” Parker said. “I wanted my children to see me complete a goal that I had wanted to achieve for many years now, and I also wanted to make them proud.”
Parker is only the third person in her family to earn a college degree following her brother and sister, and she hopes that her educational journey will serve as an inspiration for her children and grandchildren.
“Watching me get my college degree has made them want to push forward and further their education,” she said. “My oldest son is pursuing truck driving. My middle son is a freshman at UCA, and my daughter wants to join the Air Force and go to nursing school. They are my biggest supporters.”
As an added bonus, Parker is graduating with not one but two bachelor’s degrees on May 11 – a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Accounting as well as a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Management with an emphasis in Human Resources Management.
Parker, who works as an accountant at Simmons Bank , said her new degrees will help her move up the corporate ladder.
“By getting this degree, I am able to climb the ladder and learn new job duties within the company,” Parker said. “I’ve worked at Simmons Bank for 10 years.”
In addition to her bachelor’s degrees, Parker also has an associate degree in business and an associate degree in arts from UA-Pulaski Tech as well an associate degree in health information technology from DeVry University. She is currently attending Keller Williams Real Estate School and also plans to become a real estate agent in the future.
She has also received scholarships from the Arkansas Single Parent Scholarship Fund and was recognized as the organization’s Student of the Month in April.
“The Arkansas Single Parent Scholarship Fund offered me a mentor, Miss Keisha Smith, who was a big help to my success and kept me going,” Parker said. “My mom was a big motivator along with several other family members who helped me push through and strive to be the best. When I look back, I can’t believe what I did. I am ready to start my journey. This is a long-lasting goal that is now completed.”

Florida’s 6-week ban, campus protests, public funds for sports stadiums, and environmental news
Florida’s 6-week ban
Florida’s six week abortion ban is now in effect .
Before this week, abortions were legal in Florida up to 15 weeks after the state supreme court ruled there was no abortion protection in the privacy clause of the state constitution, which had been the precedent for more than 30 years.
Campus protests
This week, several arrests of protesters were on Florida’s university campuses during ongoing demonstrations against Israel’s war in Gaza. Ten people were arrested this week during a pro-Palestinian protest at the university of South Florida. Arrests were also made at demonstrations on campus at Florida State University and the University of Florida .
- Zoey Thomas , university administration reporter for The Independent Florida Alligator.
Public funds for sports stadiums
There’s a massive proposal centered around a new stadium in St. Petersburg for the Tampa Bay Rays baseball team. In Jacksonville, the City Council is negotiating details around major renovations to the stadium where the NFL Jaguars play. Both projects have billion dollar price tags that could be in part footed by taxpayers.
- Colleen Wright , St. Petersburg reporter for The Tampa Bay Times.
- Casmira Harrison , reporter for Jacksonville Today.
Environmental news
The State Department of Environmental Protection this week announced plans to allow Clearwater Land & Minerals LLC to drill for oil in the Apalachicola River floodplain.
41 Eastern Indigo snakes were released along the eastern bank of the Apalachicola River this week as part of an effort to restore Florida’s ecosystem.
The federal government is boosting efforts to protect Florida’s coral reef off the Atlantic coast. And another years-long reef rescue operation continues in what you may consider an unlikely place.
