Wildlife and Habitat

The rich estuarine, mangrove, and marsh habitats of Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge attract hundreds of species of wildlife.

More than 200 bird species are known to use Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge. Migratory birds use the Refuge as resting and feeding grounds. Mangrove islands that are a key characteristic of the area also protect birds during storms.

Nearly 200 fish species have been documented in the waters of Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge. Estuaries and back bays of the mangrove forest serve as important nursery grounds for many fish species, including listed species like the goliath grouper. Sport fish are also common throughout the Refuge and offer an exciting past time to many visiting and local anglers.

The Florida manatee and bottle-nosed dolphins are the most commonly encountered marine mammals in Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge. Mammals such as raccoons, bobcats, river otters, bobcats, Florida black bears, and the Florida panther may be spotted on mangrove islands and the mainland areas of the Refuge.

Frequently found year-round in the sub-tropical climate of Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge, reptile species here include loggerhead sea turtles, green sea turtles, diamond back terrapins, gopher tortoises, Florida box turtles, South Florida kingsnake, eastern hognose snake, American Alligators, the occasional American crocodile, and many more.

Our boat is a 26 foot Carolina Skiff offering plenty of seating for you and your family. Per Coast Guard regulations we are allowed up to 6 people on the tour at a time.

EDUCATIONAL

On our 2-hour Sunset Eco-tour we depart from Caxambas Marina on the south end of Marco Island. Learn about the 10,000 Islands and Rookery Bay Reserve and the wildlife that live in it. Dolphins are regularly seen on this tour, as well as different species of birds. We stop on a private beach in search of sea shells, and to view that  World Famous Sunset  the Gulf coast is known for. On this tour we can accommodate a maximum of 17 guests.

Get to know some of our area dolphins on every trip! Learn their names and who their relatives are as we cruise the waters of Marco Island in search of wildlife on this family-friendly eco-tour. Reservations are highly recommended!

Meeting Location & Check-In Information:

• We meet at Rose Marina, 951 Bald Eagle Dr., Marco Island, FL 34145
• Please check in at the booth and wait for further instructions
• Please arrive 3 0 minutes early to park and check-in

Inclusions:

• A complimentary souvenir photo is included, as well as a shelling bag.
• We provide complimentary water bottles on the Dolphin Explorer. You are welcome to bring along your own snacks and beverages as well on your educational Marco Island dolphin eco-tour.
• There is a restroom on the boat for your convenience.

Barrier Islands Dolphin Tour

Join the survey crew of the Dolphin Explorer and discover our underwater neighbors, the bottlenose dolphins of Southwest Florida.

On our dolphin journey, we cruise the waters of Marco Island  in search of dolphins and explore the subtropical estuaries of the 10,000 Islands National Wildlife Refuge and the Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve.

Learn to identify and know these marine animals on a first name basis! All of our dolphins have been photo identified, named by passengers, and cataloged.

Photograph our resident dolphins enjoying their natural habitat. We also stop to wander and do some shelling on the beaches of the surrounding barrier islands. This eco-tour is great for families and individuals alike as it’s designed to be educational and fun!

On our Florida dolphin expedition, you:

• Name a dolphin if we sight a new one while on your cruise!
• HEY KIDS! Take our  Dolphin Challenge and become a member of our team!
• See many other marine mammals, including manatees (May – September).
• Watch birds of prey and wading birds including eagles, osprey, egrets, ibis, great blue heron, pelicans, and more.
• Search for exotic shells on a Barrier Beach.

These adventures are part of a long-term study to document the lives of coastal bottlenose dolphin. Over 100  dolphins  have been “photo ID’d,” named, coded and cataloged to date. Please note that gratuity is not included in the price.

We require all guests to call us before booking your tour with us. Tide schedules change, and we want to give the best possible trip to our guests.

INFORMATION AND POLICIES

About Our Boat Tours

• Duration: 2 – 3 hours
• Registration is required.
• The minimum age is 6 years old.
• Meet at the launch site 30 minutes prior to the scheduled start time.

Tours are led by our exclusive eco-tour partner Rising Tide Explorers

About Our Kayak Tours

• Duration:  2-3 hours (hours vary depending on tour)
• Registration required
• Meet at launch site 30 minutes prior to scheduled start time
• All participants must sign and hand in a waiver at the time of or before registration
• Trip includes use of a kayak, all equipment, paddling instruction and admission to the Rookery Bay Environmental Learning Center
• Weight limit:  250 pounds
• Participants ages 16-17 are not required to have a parent or guardian present on the actual tour
• Tours offer single or tandem kayaks and accommodate children ages 3 and up

Cancellations & Weather Info

• Customers will receive a full refund or credit with 48 hours notice of cancellation.
• In the event of severely inclement weather, your trip leader will contact you on the morning of the trip at the phone number you provide when registering, and you will receive a full refund

What to Bring

• Wear closed-toed shoes and clothes that you do not mind getting wet
• Bring a hat, sunglasses, sun block, bug spray and a water bottle
• Leave all electronic equipment locked in your car, as you may get wet
• $10 parking fee per vehicle if  you do not have a beach sticker at Isles of Capri Paddlecraft Park location
• Customers will receive a full refund or credit with 48 hours notice of cancellation
• In the event of severely inclement weather, your trip leader will contact you on the morning of the trip at the phone number you provide when registering and, you will  receive a full refund

FRIENDS OF ROOKERY BAY ECO-TOUR OPERATOR RFP

The following request for business plans is intended to select one or more individuals or businesses to  operate the Ecotour Program at the Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (RBNERR). The  current ecotour program is managed by the Friends of Rookery Bay (FORB). The existing ecotour program  offers visitors an opportunity to participate in guided kayak tours or guided boat tours. The ecotour program  is an extremely important program to the Reserve providing funds that support research, coastal stewardship, and  environmental education outreach. Through the ecotour program, visitors have an opportunity to explore the diverse  habitats in the Reserve, including the estuary, mangrove forests, beach environment, and upland habitats in the Reserve.
