The latest act for Depeche Mode
By Luke Burbank
August 13, 2023 / 9:39 AM EDT / CBS News
For a band who put out their first big hit, "Just Can't Get Enough," more than 40 years ago, Depeche Mode is surprisingly relevant in 2023, from late-night TV appearances, to selling out stadiums across the U.S. and in Europe. And it isn't just some nostalgia tour where a band plays their greatest hits at a casino near you; no, Depeche Mode's latest album, "Memento Mori," is getting serious radio play.
Dave Gahan, Depeche Mode's lead singer, said, "Our music, if you allow it, will take you somewhere."
And yet, Gahan and Martin Gore, the band's lead songwriter, who began the year with a new album, "Memento Mori," and a packed tour schedule, found themselves somewhere they've never been – mourning the loss of their bandmate, Andy Fletcher.
"I didn't realize maybe before we went into this promo trip how heavy that would be, to be asked about that over and over and over again," said Gore.
Fletch, as they called him, was a founding member of the band, and died suddenly last year just as the album was finished, giving its title (which means "Remember one's mortality") an eerie new meaning.
Gahan said, "Some might say that a lot of these songs were sort of foreboding or something, but, you know, I don't think Martin was probably aware of that."

Gore said, "When I first started writing songs for this album, I wouldn't have had the idea of calling the album 'Memento Mori' and maybe have some of the songs dealing with death. It just kind of happened like that. Sometimes you do wonder if you tap into something."
"People Are People" (1984) by Depeche Mode:
Growing up in Basildon, a small town in Essex, England, Martin Gore was one of the first kids around to get a synthesizer, which is why Vince Clarke and Andy Fletcher wanted to start a band with him. "They immediately saw the potential of the synthesizer that I was using," Gore said. The guitars and bass were ditched. "We became an all-electronic band."
Gahan then joined as singer, and the group started making waves in London's underground club scene. "It was easy to go to gigs on the train," Gore said, noting they'd pack their synthesizers into suitcases.
Soon enough, this English band with a French name and their synthesizers were becoming a hit in Europe. But success in the U.S. would take a bit longer, due to a lack of radio play, and some suspicious music critics. Every interview, they said, would be a battle, as Gahan recalled: "'Why don't you use traditional instruments?' Of course, it's not a great way to start an interview."
The band finally broke through to American audiences in 1988 playing to a capacity crowd at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, as memorably documented by D.A. Pennebaker in his film, "Depeche Mode 101."
Their subsequent album, "Violator," went triple platinum. And as for guitars, well, they began appearing in the sound of Depeche Mode as well.
Burbank asked, "As someone who is not a rock star, why do you need so many different guitars? Is it different tunings?"
Gore replied, "At some point it becomes an addiction."
He described the band's appeal: "I think we somehow managed to build this cult following. And we still feel to this day that, you know, we're kind of like a cult band, even though we sell a lot of records everywhere."
WEB EXCLUSIVE: Depeche Mode's hunt for "interesting sounds":
Gahan added, "I think we probably are, and have been for many years, we're kind of the biggest alternative band in the world, put it that way."
But success for Depeche Mode was a double-edged sword. Gahan developed a heroin addiction so severe that it's said Los Angeles paramedics nicknamed him "The Cat," because he'd overdosed so many times.
"It was the time when I wasn't working that got really dark, because there's no one there to balance it out," Gahan said. "There's no band, there's no music, there's no, you know, it was just the addiction and that's what it is. You can call it whatever you like. But once you go down that road, the hardest thing is to drag yourself back out of it – it was for me anyway. I didn't think it would be as hard as what it was."
Burbank asked, "Was it hard for you, Martin, and the other members of the band to kind of watch what Dave was going through, as his friends?"
"It was difficult at the time," Gore replied. "But then, you know, after that, after Dave got clean, you know, for years I went on drinking. And I think that that must have been really hard for Dave because, you know, I wasn't an occasional drinker, you know? And that was in Dave's face all the time."
"It's kind of Martin to say that," Gahan said.
Today both Gore and Gahan are sober, and credit music with saving their lives. "I know Martin feels the same; it was the one thing that always sort of could lift me, change my spirit, change the way I felt, lead me into a different direction, or also into fantasy, into another world," Gahan said. "And yeah, it saved me many, many times."

Depeche Mode Expand 2023 North American Tour
By Jazz Monroe
Depeche Mode have added a new haul of shows to the North American tour that begins next month. The extra dates kick off in Mexico in late summer and run through to mid-December, with stops in most major cities on the coasts and a few in between. See their full tour schedule below.
The tour, which includes a spot at Primavera 2023 , promotes new album Memento Mori , out March 24 via Columbia . It is the band’s first album in five years, and the first since the death last year of founding member Andy “Fletch” Fletcher. “Fletch would have loved this album,” Dave Gahan said in press materials. “We’re really looking forward to sharing it with you soon, and we can’t wait to present it to you live at the shows next year.” Memento Mori follows Depeche Mode’s 2017 LP, Spirit . A single from the record, “ Ghosts Again ,” is out now.

Depeche Mode Closes Out 2023 With Moving Return Of ‘Memento Mori Tour’ To L.A. [Photos/Videos]
Depeche Mode is unquestionably one of England’s most iconic acts of the last half-century. But these synth-rock stars wouldn’t likely be where and what they are today—let alone have revolutionized modern music the way they did—without Los Angeles.
It was in the City of Angels, with its thriving LGBTQIA+ community, that Dave Gahan , Martin Gore , Andy Fletcher , and Vince Clarke broke out as bona fide global superstars. Their concert at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena back in June 1988, with 60,000 attendees, was a seminal moment in the band’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame career.
Given that unbreakable bond between band and city, it was only fitting that Depeche Mode closed out the North American legs of its Memento Mori Tour —and its 2023 calendar as a whole—in L.A. And not just with one show, but four: two at the Kia Forum and two more at Crypto.com Arena . This, after selling out the Forum back in March, near the start of their latest go-round.
Like that show, Depeche Mode’s latest trip to L.A. on Saturday at the Crypto.com Arena came, unfortunately, without Fletch. The founding member and long-time keyboardist passed away in May 2022, before the band recorded its latest album, Memento Mori . But not before Fletch had a chance to help write the songs that comprised Depeche Mode’s 2023 release. In that way, this tour and this particular performance were a tribute to Fletch.
The set began with a pair of singles off the new release, “My Cosmos is Mine” and “Wagging Tongue”, and went on to loop in more Memento Mori favorites, including “My Favourite Stranger” and “Ghosts Again” mid-set. That quartet of tracks came in second among featured Depeche Mode albums, just behind 1990’s seminal Violator with five. Among that latter group was “World Through My Eyes,” which was dedicated to Fletch and included images of him as a backdrop.
Not surprisingly, “Enjoy the Silence”, “Waiting for the Night”, and “Personal Jesus” all made the cut, either to close the main set or fill the encore. “Policy of Truth” clocked in during the first quarter of the 24-song show.
Depeche Mode brought to bear plenty of other staples of its repertoire, as well. From “Walking in My Shoes” and “Everything Counts” to “John the Revelator” and “Just Can’t Get Enough”, the band made sure to plumb every era for tunes to keep the packed house on its collective feet.
Along the way, Dave danced and twirled across the stage (and between costume changes), Christian Eigner kept the beat on drums and Peter Gordeno , who has toured with the band since 1998, held down the keyboard with aplomb. Martin did a little of everything, as is his wont. He filled in for some of Fletch’s parts on keys, sang his heart out on “But Not Tonight” and, of course, wailed the rest of the night away on guitar.
And together, they treated a fan named Martha to a rendition of “Happy Birthday”—their only cover of the evening. Not that Depeche Mode needs to pay real tribute to its forebears at this point. Their influence spreads far and wide, with Muse , The Killers , Nine Inch Nails , Shakira , No Doubt , Linkin Park , Coldplay , Chvrches , Rammstein , and La Roux among an exceedingly eclectic cast.
That sonic crusade doesn’t figure to end any time soon. Depeche Mode has dates lined up across Europe through the winter and spring of 2024, starting with a handful of U.K. concerts in January. Those first shows of the new year will serve as an official homecoming for one of Great Britain’s greatest bands.
But, in truth, this tour has already been a rousing success for arguably their most ardent base of support in L.A., with five spectacular shows in town to prove it.

Forty-two years after the release of their debut album, the members of Depeche Mode — well, the surviving ones — are in on the joke of their somehow having become old guys.
As Dave Gahan, 60, and Martin Gore , 61, played their synth-rock classic “Enjoy the Silence” on Tuesday night at the Kia Forum, images of a bejeweled skull rotated on a wall of video screens behind them; later, Gahan noticed the thousands of glowing smartphones in the crowd and said, “Everybody used to have cigarette lighters, but I guess that’s not a thing anymore.”
That Depeche Mode would still be on the road in 2023 — Tuesday’s concert came just days into a lengthy world tour behind the band’s new studio LP, “Memento Mori” — is no great surprise. Rock nostalgia is a huge business, and right now business is good for Depeche Mode, which three years ago was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and which recently had its late-’80s “Never Let Me Down Again” prominently featured in HBO’s hit “ The Last of Us .” What’s more, echoes of the band’s signature style — sleek but hard-hitting, anxious yet darkly ecstatic — are detectable in music by younger acts like the Weeknd and Halsey, the latter of whom was in the audience at the Forum alongside the many OG types who looked like they’d been at Depeche Mode’s legendary Rose Bowl gig in 1988 .
Yet none of that assured that the group would feel as vital as it did Tuesday in a gutsy two-hour performance that didn’t defy age so much as question what age has to mean. “Memento Mori” follows the unexpected death last year of Depeche Mode’s founding keyboardist, Andy Fletcher, and though the material was written before he died (of an aortic dissection), songs like “Ghosts Again” and “Before We Drown” ponder mortality with the same blend of vulnerability and determination that the group once applied to its thoughts on religion, alienation and sexual obsession. The result, paradoxically, is Depeche Mode’s most alive-sounding album in years.
Andy Fletcher, Depeche Mode co-founder and keyboardist, dies at 60
Fletcher helped define the sound of 1980s and ’90s alternative music through hits including ‘Just Can’t Get Enough,’ ‘Personal Jesus’ and ‘People Are People.’

Dressed in a suit jacket he slipped off after two songs to reveal a vest with no shirt beneath it, Gahan had a Michael Imperioli-in-“The White Lotus” vibe as he crooned through the moody philosophy of the new LP’s “My Cosmos Is Mine” and “Wagging Tongue.” Gore, who wore an ash-colored jacket printed with more skulls, switched between guitar and keyboards and took over lead vocals for “Soul With Me,” a very pretty ballad from “Memento Mori” about “heading for the ever after.”
Against the throbbing bass and blipping synths of “Ghosts Again,” one of several tracks on the album Gore co-wrote with Richard Butler of the Psychedelic Furs, Gahan twirled across the stage like a goth(-ier) Stevie Nicks — a heartening sign that he and Gore are finding some solace in performing these songs suffused with grief.
As strong as “Memento Mori” is, nobody came to the Forum just to hear new stuff. Rounded out by Christian Eigner on drums and Peter Gordeno on keyboards, Depeche Mode luxuriated in the sensual gloom of oldies including “Walking in My Shoes,” “Precious” and “World in My Eyes,” during which a vintage photo of a young Fletcher appeared on the video screen. “I Feel You” was grinding and lascivious, “John the Revelator” funky and clanging; “A Pain That I’m Used to” rode a morbid disco groove that wouldn’t quit.
Lana Del Rey’s most personal album yet may just be her best
On her sprawling and self-referential new LP, Del Rey’s lyrics deliver a staggering blend of the profound and the vernacular.
March 26, 2023
Gahan and Gore began their encore with a bluesy acoustic rendition of “Condemnation” before revving up the chipper synth-pop of the band’s first big hit, “Just Can’t Get Enough.” Then they closed with “Never Let Me Down Again” and the happily inevitable “Personal Jesus,” both pumping with fresh blood you hope for their sake is still in supply by the time this tour circles back to Southern California in December for another six (!) arena dates.
“L.A., let’s see those hands,” Gahan told the crowd as the show reached its emotional climax. He took a moment to admire the sea of waving arms, then added, “It never gets old.”

Depeche Mode review – who knew synth-pop could be this colossal and life-affirming?
Twickenham Stadium, London Dave Gahan is a mic-spinning, limb-bending, theatrical marvel as the band gallop through decades’ worth of hits. And the presence of Andrew Fletcher, the keyboardist who died last year, is touchingly felt
D epeche Mode have been thrilling stadiums for 35 years now. Immortalised in their classic tour movie 101, their first ever megashow, at the Pasadena Rose Bowl, established rules of engagement which pertain to this day. You shall sing the Thatcher-baiting chorus of Everything Counts over and over while frontman Dave Gahan holds out his microphone. You shall follow Gahan’s cue to sway your arms from side to side during Never Let Me Down Again. Still, much has changed. The four young men from Essex who appeared on the cover of 101 like a synth-pop Beatles became first a trio and then, with the premature death of keyboardist Andrew Fletcher last year, a duo. While drummer Christian Eigner and multi-instrumentalist Peter Gordeno, both in the touring fold since 1998, carry the sonic weight, it is hard not seeing Fletcher waving amiably from behind his synthesiser.
Death has been a driving concern for songwriter Martin Gore since the mid-80s – alongside sex, sin and guilt – but its presence is more deeply felt in material from their sombre new album Memento Mori. The video for Ghosts Again , their best single in many years, shows the duo playing chess in homage to The Seventh Seal, while the show’s key visual motif is a skull. Fletcher’s subtly animated face fills the screens during World in My Eyes, providing a necessary moment of phone-waving communal remembrance in a stadium where diehards in old tour T-shirts mingle with a refreshing number of younger converts.
Most touchingly, Gahan and Gore seem to have rediscovered their appreciation for one another in their sixties. They don’t talk much (their defining hit, after all, is called Enjoy the Silence ) but their body language speaks volumes. Note the way Gahan returns to the stage for the end of Gore’s solo performance of Soul With Me’s blue-eyed R&B to express his enthusiasm, or how tenderly their voices mesh on an intimate encore of Waiting for the Night to greet the darkening sky. Given their candidly documented history of distance, this dramatisation of their rapprochement is enormously touching.
after newsletter promotion
Depeche Mode are weirdly prone to starting shows in first gear but once the video screens snap from black-and-white to colour for Everything Counts, they gallop through decades’ worth of hits with barely a detour. How they alone of their generation made synth-pop colossal still fascinates. The messianic techno-blues of Personal Jesus and I Feel You has obvious power but the monolithic mass of Never Let Me Down Again (recently heard in The Last of Us) or the Orwellian Stripped is still astounding: stadium rock without the rock. The pulsating glam-house of A Pain That I’m Used To is another sui generis highlight; Just Can’t Get Enough’s peppy teen bop a delightful outlier. Really though, their success on stage comes down to Gahan’s preposterous theatricality: louche, flouncy, Jaggerish. At first resembling a Vegas vampire before stripping down to a series of colourful waistcoats, he is a bum-waggling, mic-spinning, limb-bending, rabble-rousing marvel. In the midst of death, he explodes with life.

Kelly Lee Owens and Gahan’s daughter Stella Rose will appear as the support acts on the first North American leg . It is not yet know who’ll open for the band when they return in the autumn.
Depeche Mode are also scheduled to tour in Europe, the UK and Ireland this year. Find any remaining tickets for the UK dates here .
‘Memento Mori’ follows on from the duo’s 2017 album ‘Spirit’, and is their first record since the death of founding member Andy Fletcher in May 2022 . The group shared a new single called ‘Ghosts Again’ last week, before performing it live onstage for the first time .
During an interview with NME last October , frontman Gahan explained that he was initially hesitant about making a new Depeche Mode album.
“It wasn’t something I dived into, I have got to say,” he said. “At first I put up quite a bit of resistance. I would say, ‘I don’t know if I still want to do this’; all the usual kind of stuff, but there was a bit more of that than usual.”
Elsewhere in the conversation, the singer noted that although work on ‘Memento Mori’ had started prior to Fletcher’s death, the latter did not record any material for the project.
“He never got to hear any of it, which is really sad to me because there are songs on this record where I know he’d be like, ‘This is the best thing we’ve had in years’,” Gahan told NME . “I can hear his voice. I can also hear him saying, ‘Does every song have to be about death?’”
Despite its emotive themes, ‘Memento Mori’ is ultimately rooted in positivity, serving as an escape for Gahan and Gore. “The one thing I can do is make music with Martin,” the frontman went on, “then we can go do our thing and hopefully that brings people together. It’s just all too much [in the world and the news right now].
“You have to find a place for yourself somehow. This is what it is for us right now: making another record, and we’re going to go out and perform on these stages.”

Depeche Mode Danced with Death During 2023 Tour Kick-Off: Review
A set that dealt with the ultimate end and "our friend Andy Fletcher"
Fans came from as far as Scotland and as close as Sacramento’s J Street to the Golden 1 Center Thursday night to see the legendary Depeche Mode onstage for their first full-length concert since 2018’s “Global Spirit Tour” (get tickets here ). The evening’s revelatory ride through 15 albums and four decades boasted many live debuts and several not-in-a-long-time musical arrangements.
When they last left us five years ago, Depeche Mode were a trio — and now a duo, a result of the untimely death of founding member Andy Fletcher in May 2022. The remaining original band members, songwriter/guitarist Martin Gore and vocalist Dave Gahan, continue on through their new album, Memento Mori , out today, and the tour, which will traverse the world through December. The sentiment behind “Memento Mori” (“remember that you have to die”) appeared everywhere during the almost two-hour set.
Gahan and Gore delivered the show their fans hungered for. Depeche Mode, unlike many legacy acts, don’t shy away from new material — evidenced by the first three songs they played, all from Memento Mori . An instrumental riff from the symphonic “Speak to Me” (and later on a live debut of the full track) welcomed the band, its screeching and grinding hyping up the crowd, illuminating a large letter M with every sonic brush stroke. That intro moved into the live debut of “My Cosmos Is Mine” followed by “Wagging Tongue.” Gahan’s unmistakable voice cried out, “You find it hard to swallow when you watch another angel die,” establishing a sense of comfort and familiarity even though the lyrics might be new. From these early indicators, the Northern California crowd knew it would be a night of firsts.
The visuals to complement each track were haunting, vivid and surreal, switching from the letter M to short interpretive video vignettes.
“Well, well, we are here we are again,” Gahan said in his first address to the crowd before transitioning into 1993’s “Walking in My Shoes” from Songs of Faith and Devotion . He sped ahead to 1997’s Ultra with back-to-back “It’s No Good” and “Sister of Night,” letting everyone know, “we’ve never played that song ever… pretty good.” It was the first non-acoustic version of “Sister of Night” since 2009 and the first time with Gahan on vocals.
“Everything Counts” brought its “grabbing hands” lyrics to life with a sign interpreter — clad in all black with white gloves —featured in a background video vignette as Gahan took the front of the stage for the first time.
