For Neil Young and Crazy Horse, Tonight Was Not the Night: Concert Review

Maybe it was the chilly temperatures, steady breeze and light spatterings of rain, which take a toll when a person is standing outdoors on an elevated platform — like the stage of a concert venue — for two hours. Or maybe it was just an off night. But the feverishly passionate reviews for the first dates of Neil Young and Crazy Horse’s “ Love Earth” tour — their first in a decade — bore little resemblance to the band that plodded through its set Wednesday evening in the second of a two-night stand New York’s Forest Hills Stadium. And the fact that they were plodding through a stunning setlist of songs from the peak of Young’s illustrious career only made it worse.
Popular on Variety
But a band, especially a live rock band, is only as good as its rhythm section, and on Wednesday night, the once-mighty Crazy Horse began wandering off the track as soon as they’d started. Most of the songs were played significantly slower than their recorded versions, sometimes approaching a sludgey, almost doom-metal tempo. Drummer Ralph Molina and bassist Billy Talbot, both 80, could barely keep things moving, missing beats and losing time. Rhythm guitarist Micah Nelson — country legend Willie’s 33-year-old son, who is new to this band but has been playing with Young for a decade — did his best to hold it together, but Young was cutting songs off at the earliest opportunity, where in the past he’d often just be getting started.
To be fair, the last time I saw Neil and Crazy Horse was in 1996 — when they blew the roof off of Madison Square Garden with an electrifying set filled with so many great songs that you just couldn’t believe it — and a spot listen to YouTube recordings of other concerts on this tour, including the previous night’s , finds the band playing better, sometimes much better. But this show had a killer setlist too — and apparently the tour’s debut of “Mansion on the Hill” — and hearing those timeless songs played by what at times sounded like your uncle’s covers band only made things worse. Young, who usually includes at least some more-recent material in his sets, kept it classic — just one song from the ‘90s, nothing newer — which suggests that maybe he knows this is probably Crazy Horse’s last ride.
It’s a fact of biology to say that elderly rock and roll is always going to be like an old-timers’ baseball game: No matter how much energy they display onstage, nearly all vocalists past a certain age must sing in lower registers. Paul McCartney, the Rolling Stones, Elton John and many others in the 70-and-above group are able to deliver stadium-sized sets thanks to low-key but essential support from auxiliary players and singers — Springsteen’s current tour band totals 18 musicians. Drummers, obviously, have it hardest of all: The Stones’ late, great Charlie Watts must have been a freak of nature to power through two-hour sets into his late 70s; most older bands with their classic-era drummers are supported on tour with percussionists. And let’s be honest, whether we realize it or not, prerecorded backing tracks have become so ubiquitous at major concerts that our ears may be unaccustomed to not hearing them.
Neil Young has never done any of that and never will — he even made a crack about it early in the show, while waiting for his roadie to tune his trusty, battered Gibson Les Paul. “We have to make sure all the backing tracks are in synch,” he joked.
None of this is to say that older humans can’t be superhuman musicians or shouldn’t be touring and performing. But this band has two months’ worth of dates ahead of it, and on Wednesday night, it was hard not to wish that Neil had put the spurs on.
Setlist: Cortez the Killer Cinnamon Girl Fuckin’ Up Down by the River Scattered (Let’s Think About Livin’) Roll Another Number (For the Road) Don’t Cry No Tears Mansion on the Hill Danger Bird Powderfinger Love and Only Love Comes a Time Heart of Gold Human Highway I Am a Child Sugar Mountain Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black) Encore: Like a Hurricane Encore 2: Roll Another Number (For the Road) (reprise, incomplete)

Dark Star Orchestra Finalizes 2024 Summer Tour Dates
Dark Star Orchestra finalized its summer plans with the revelation of the band’s full tour schedule. Set to kick off on June 28th in Waite Park, MN, the Grateful Dead tribute act will perform from coast to coast through August.
Following the band’s annual Dark Star Jubilee in Thornville, OH over Memorial Day Weekend, DSO will head West for a run of previously announced shows in Colorado and California before heading out to the East Coast for a set at Great South Bay Music Festival (7/20) and a show at Stone Pony Summer Stage in Asbury Park, NJ (7/21). Dark Star Orchestra revealed that for the Stone Pony show, the band will recreate Grateful Dead’s September 3rd, 1977 concert from Englishtown, NJ.
“Englishtown was the biggest Grateful Dead show ever held in New Jersey with an estimated 150,000 in attendance,” DSO bassist Skip Vangelas said. “Its proximity, only 25 miles from Asbury Park, and the fact that it was an epic outdoor show, made sense for us to choose. It’s a classic show in the GD world and one that New Jerseyans, whether Deadhead or not have never forgotten!”
The band has added a new two-night run at Wonderland Forest in LaFayette, NY (8/9–8/10) along with gigs at New York City’s The Rooftop at Pier 17 (8/11) and Power Ridge in Middlefield, CT (8/16). Dark Star Orchestra will perform its eighth concert at Innovative Field , home of the Rochester Red Wings minor league baseball team, in Rochester, NY (8/21) ahead of shows at Thompson’s Point in Portland, ME (8/23), and Stateside Amphitheater at Jay Peak Resort in Jay, VT (8/24) before wrapping the tour with a two-night run at Tree House Brewing Company in Deerfield, MA (8/26–8/27).
Tickets for the newly announced Dark Star Orchestra 2024 summer tour dates are on sale now via the band’s website . See below for a full list of newly announced concerts. Dark Star Orchestra will kick off the summer on May 26th, 27th, and 28th at Legend Valley in Ohio for Dark Star Jubilee with three nights of DSO in addition to sets by Greensky Bluegrass , Melvin Seals & JGB , Daniel Donato , Keller Williams’ Grateful Grass , Jennifer Hartswick , Doom Flamingo , and many more.

Aussie cover band The Hindley Street Country Club embark on national tour following whirlwind rise to fame
A hobby project has turned into a global sensation for an Aussie cover band about to embark on its first full-scale national tour.
A jukebox of the world's greatest hits, reimagined and uploaded to YouTube.
With over half a billion YouTube views and a further three quarters of a billion across Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, The Hindley Street Country Club is so popular even the original artists are fans.

"Mick Fleetwood, that's right Mick Fleetwood he raved about us which was very humbling," the band's founder Constantine Delo said.
"The guys from Kiss have written to us."
Con started the band in Adelaide in November 2017 when he got his crew together to record a jukebox of the world's greatest hits.
Since then, they have recorded over 300 songs from their favourite artists, including Phil Collins, Barbra Streisand and Fleetwood Mac.
"It just exploded. It's been referred to as lightning in a bottle and it is that and we are really fortunate," Con said.
Through the Covid years their online fan base started to grow.
Now, the band is hitting the road, backed by legendary promoter Michael Chugg, who has brought everyone from Elton John to Dolly Parton and Madonna to Australia.
"When that man makes a phone call people pick up the phone, so for us it's like the Holy Grail for us," Con said.

"You know I've been seeing this band around for a while and then I saw they had a billion views and it's like whoa hang on a minute," Chugg said.
"When you get people like Mick Fleetwood and Christopher Cross and Leo Sayer ... texting and emailing saying 'you did a better version than I did' there's something going on.
The numbers suggest a tour overseas is next.
"They are getting calls from all over the world," Chugg said.
"'Come and play at the palace in Morocco, come and do some big shows in Brazil'.
"I can see them playing major festivals around the world after the big headline acts go on and just wiping everyone out because they're that good."

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band to star in 'Road Diary' on Hulu, Disney+
What's life like backstage with Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band?
Find out in “Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band,” which debuts on Hulu and Disney+ in October. The documentary has “exclusive footage” from E Street's current tour, beginning in January 2023 with rehearsals at the Vogel in the Count Base Center for the Arts in Red Bank. There are also interviews with band members, including Springsteen, and concert footage.
Thom Zimny, a frequent Springsteen collaborator, is the director.
“ 'Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band' opens a new door to Springsteen’s creative process for fans around the world, sharing fly-on-the-wall footage of band rehearsals and special moments backstage — as well as hearing from Springsteen himself,” states a Hulu/Disney+ release. “These conversations follow Springsteen closely as he develops the story he wants to tell with this tour’s setlist — interspersed with rare archival clips of the E Street Band, underscoring themes of life, loss, mortality and community. In this way, it serves as an essential and never-before-seen chapter in an autobiographical series spanning Springsteen’s memoir 'Born to Run,' 'Springsteen on Broadway,' and the films 'Western Stars' and 'Letter to You.' ”
The tour began Feb. 1, 2023, in Tampa, and was marked by positive critical reviews — and a rash of absences by E Street Band members because of COVID. Steven Van Zandt, Nils Lofgren, Jake Clemons, Soozie Tyrell and Lisa Lowell all missed shows.
Several shows were also postponed due to an undisclosed illness, and for a Springsteen illness, as stated for two shows at Citizens Bank Ballpark in Philadelphia last August.
After three triumphant shows at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford (Aug. 30, and Sept. 1 and 3), Springsteen announced the tour was postponed for the rest of the year as he battled peptic ulcer disease.

“The last four shows, I was playing really ill,” said Springsteen March 21 on SiriusXM's E Street Radio with Jim Rotolo. “So that was Foxborough, which was a great show, and the three Meadowlands shows, which were all, really — the band playing at its best and in front of a great New Jersey audience and a great Boston audience. But I was really not well.”
The tour resumed March 19 at the Footprint Center in Phoenix, and its currently in Ireland, where shows are running over three hours.
The exact date for the debut of “Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band” has not been released yet.
