birkbeck virtual campus tour

Birkbeck Events Blog

Reflections by birkbeck experts and students on a wide range of events held throughout the year., birkbeck students embark on virtual tour of the city of london.

While we’ve been unable to head out and explore our capital city in person, Birkbeck students toured the historic City of London virtually with the help of guide Tim Kidd.

Whilst we would all love to be together in person, Birkbeck is bringing London to its international student community.

On Thursday 26 June, Birkbeck students were treated to a fascinating virtual tour through the historic City of London.

Courtesy of Tim Kidd, a member of the British Guild of Tour Guides, the Birkbeck community was brought together to explore London’s ancient origins. As Tim explained throughout the event, the City of London has a vibrant and varied history which tells the story of our famous capital. From the Bank of England to the walls of the Tour, Tim was able to explain London’s Roman roots and their role in shaping the world of finance today.

For many of Birkbeck’s students, the City offers world-class employment prospects and a foothold into the world of banking, trading and insurance. The City of London is today regarded as one of the major financial capitals of the world, and with good reason. Tim’s tour told the tale of the City of London, exploring why it is so such a unique place within the UK and Europe. At the end of the tour, an insightful Q&A session followed.

With the international situation evolving rapidly, it’s as important as ever that Birkbeck continues to adapt its student experience. Indeed, we very much look forward to hosting more engaging virtual tours in the future.

Best viewing spots for luminous fireworks at epcot.

epcot fireworks cruise 2023

This EPCOT fireworks viewing guide highlights the best & worst viewing spots for Luminous: The Symphony of Us fireworks at Walt Disney World, which replaced Harmonious. Here we will provide some general tips about the best locations, and point out the best of these on a map of World Showcase. ( Updated January 24, 2024 .)

I’ve watched and photographed EPCOT’s fireworks way too many times and can say that not all viewing spots were created equally. For this post, I’m going to highlight my 5 favorite spots (see map below), along with some alternatives to those spots, and general discussions about choosing a spot for watching the EPCOT fireworks.

What we recommend doing is grabbing dinner from one of the best EPCOT counter service restaurants or festival food booths in World Showcase around about 8:15 pm. After that, stake out one of these spots, enjoy your meal, as well as the pre-fireworks ambiance along the promenade and in World Showcase lagoon…

Choosing a prime location for EPCOT’s fireworks is actually easier said than done, as certain variables, such as the direction of the wind and where there might be fireworks dessert parties or private events that eliminate potential viewings areas as options for regular park guests change often

Unfortunately, unlike my  Best Magic Kingdom Fireworks Viewing Spots post, which contained an easy to follow map with color coded areas of good, bad, and okay spots from which to watch Happily Ever After, the same really isn’t possible for EPCOT. This is because within a span of 10 feet, you might have both an awesome and awful viewing spot, due to trees, food carts, or other obstructions.

epcot fireworks cruise 2023

The latest update to this viewing guide comes after we’ve had several opportunities to watch Luminous: The Symphony of Us. This is the newest nighttime spectacular at Walt Disney World as of 2024; it’s the permanent replacement for Harmonious and the interim EPCOT Forever fireworks.

We mention both of those past shows because Luminous is somewhere in between the two in terms of viewing difficulty. In its return, EPCOT Forever was almost entirely high-level pyro with next-to-nothing on the lagoon itself. Accordingly, our prior advice was that you had a good-enough view of the fireworks so long as you could see the sky. EPCOT Forever was very low stakes and easy to see.

By contrast, Harmonious had a lot of low-level action that almost necessitated a front row view along the water’s edge. Not just that, either, as it had screens consisting of a giant Stargate and water tacos (for lack of better terms) that were only viewable from certain angles. Watching Harmonious proved a challenge, as certain angles were far more satisfying than others.

epcot fireworks cruise 2023

Like Harmonious, Luminous has barges on the lagoon and beautiful fountains and other effects rising out of those that you’ll want to be able to see. Unlike Harmonious, there are no screens in Luminous. Accordingly, there is nothing that you’re going to miss if watching Luminous from a certain spot. There are no “wrong” angles for the new nighttime spectacular.

In the most simple terms, if you can see the sky and you can see the water, you’re in pretty good shape for Luminous: The Symphony of Us. To be sure, there are some views of water and sky that are better than others for Luminous, but we’re talking incremental gains rather than outcome-determinative ones.

You won’t miss anything major with Luminous in one spot versus another, which was not necessarily something that could be said about Harmonious or even our beloved IllumiNations.

epcot fireworks cruise 2023

There is one minor exception to this, which is that we now prefer spots that also afford a view of Spaceship Earth. This isn’t a hard recommendation, but it is worth noting that the Beacons of Magic are now integrated into some segments of Luminous: The Symphony of Us.

For the most part, this is a little thing–a minor enhancement that’s like the cherry on top. Many guests may not even notice, as Spaceship Earth is in the background, and the Beacons of Magic are best enjoyed up close from within World Celebration (the front of the park). However, longtime EPCOT fans will appreciate this enhancement. In particular, the nods to IllumiNations are a brilliant touch. That’s just us, though. If it’s your first visit to EPCOT, we wouldn’t recommend camping out longer for a view that has Spaceship Earth in the background.

With that in mind, we do have favorite spots for viewing Luminous: The Symphony of Us. In no particular order ( numbers refer to the map at the bottom )…

epcot fireworks cruise 2023

#1 – Front of the House: The best view of the show is known informally as the “Front of the House,” and is located between the two gift shops at the entrance to World Showcase.

Note that this area is often reserved seating for special events. On other occasions, such as during the 2024 EPCOT Festival of Arts, there’s a giant performance stage that makes the dead-on view completely obstructed. In these scenarios, shift towards Mexico in the area behind the Disney Traders gift shop.

When available and unobstructed, I’m a fan of the Front of the House spot not only because it’s a centered viewing but also because it doesn’t require a front row spot for a great view. In fact, you’re better off towards the back (ignore the crowd that congregates up front) because of the way the area becomes elevated as you move away from the rail.

epcot fireworks cruise 2023

#2 – Mitsukoshi Department Store: This spot is a great combination of great and unique views. This view is available from the second story of the Mitsukoshi Department Store in the Japan pavilion, right outside the Shiki-Sai: Sushi Izakaya (formerly Tokyo Dining) windows.

The torii at the edge of the water in Japan does obstruct the view a bit, but it also makes for more interesting photos, as does the elevated perspective. Word has really gotten out about this location (and it’s incredibly popular with photographers), so even though it’s off the beaten path, don’t expect to be able to show up here at the last minute.

This location in Japan often fills up ~45 minutes before the fireworks, so it does require a bit of a commitment–and one that may not be entirely necessary unless you want the perfect  elevated vantage for photos of the EPCOT fireworks. If you don’t care as much about photos, you can easily show up at the last minute and grab a great spot in the open courtyard or even an elevated one on the steps.

epcot fireworks cruise 2023

Ground level back deeper in Japan anywhere between the pagoda and department store provides a great view, with the torii gate in the foreground as an interesting photo-framing element. This is our new go-to last minute spot, and we typically snag somewhere here at the very last minute right after dining at Katsura Grill.

We love doing this because there’s rarely anyone else within 10 feet of us. It’s a perfect and somewhat secluded spot that requires minimal effort to snag. Above is the approximate view from this area, which we think is pretty good!

Some days, you can get a front-row spot at the water’s edge by the torii less than 30 minutes before the show. We also love this spot, and it’s often overlooked because guests assume it’s obstructed. It’s not. So long as you can see the barges, you have a perfect view of Luminous. We do recommend watching slightly off-center, to the right side of the torii ( see the top photo in this post for the perfect spot ).

Having a view of Spaceship Earth plus the range of options elevates Japan to our #1 recommendation for watching Luminous: The Symphony of Us. No matter how early or late you opt to arrive to secure a spot, there will be  something  that’s pretty good. Show up 30+ minutes in advance and you might be able to get a front-row spot on the second story of the department store. Roll up 30 seconds before Luminous, and there still should be something that’s fairly good, too. Japan also never hosts dessert or private parties, making it less of a wildcard.

epcot fireworks cruise 2023

#3 – France Bridge: The bridge between the United Kingdom and France is an incredibly popular spot and you’ll see people camping out here well before the Luminous fireworks begin. The France Bridge is a good spot because it provides a bit of elevation and an unobstructed view.

The biggest downside is that it’s often packed, and arguably not worth the wait or crowds on busier nights in EPCOT. Additionally, the location is a bit farther back than any of the other waterfront spots, making you feel a little less like you’re a part of the action.

epcot fireworks cruise 2023

For Luminous, we actually prefer the waterfront areas to the left and right of this bridge.

Try for the the lagoon seating area behind the Yorkshire County Fish Shop or Rose & Crown in the United Kingdom pavilion for stellar waterfront seating. Alternatively, the area to the right on the little island between the two bridges ( view above ) is up close and fantastic. The only problem with this area is that around half the time it’s closed for private parties. If it’s available, we highly recommend it. Note that this area is tiered–take the stairs all the way down to the lagoon level.

epcot fireworks cruise 2023

#4 – Mexico: This isn’t nearly as specific as the other recommendations on this list, but that’s because there is no single spot in Mexico that stands out. Rather, there are several really good spots, plus the entire area between Norway and Mexico, as it has little in the way of obstructions.

The best spots in Mexico are La Hacienda (the restaurant with the best view in World Showcase) and near the boat dock (if you’re lucky, you may actually be able to watch  from  the boat dock, as some guests are selected to sit out there each night).

epcot fireworks cruise 2023

#5 – Italy Isola – One of my absolute favorite spots for EPCOT’s fireworks is the Italy Isola, which is the raised part of the Italy pavilion near World Showcase Lagoon that juts out towards the water. It’s a very immersive location that feels close to the action. The photo above demonstrates the immersion of this area, but not really how great of a view it is.

Just one minor problem: it hosts private events about half the time. If you’re wanting to watch from this area but a dessert party is taking place, typically there will be some “free” space off to the left side (towards the American Adventure) that has nearly as good of a view. The only problem here is that it’s a small space and can be competitive. Still a great spot, and one that offers a clear view of the lagoon level and pyro in Luminous.

Or, you can simply step back a bit deeper in the Italy pavilion and still have a great view of the pyro. Along with the Japan pavilion, deeper in the Italy pavilion is a great low-stakes, last-minute spot for watching the fireworks away from the crowds!

epcot fireworks cruise 2023

There are other good locations for watching EPCOT’s fireworks all around World Showcase Lagoon, and really anywhere that offers a reasonably clear view to the center of World Showcase Lagoon is going to be perfectly fine–especially if you’re primary there for pyro and not low-level effects.

Other large areas of unobstructed viewing include Canada–even the elevated area in Canada isn’t half bad, Rose & Crown’s seating area, and portions of the waterfront between China and the Outpost.

epcot fireworks cruise 2023

One final bonus “spot” is really not a single spot at all, but rather, anywhere deeper in the World Showcase pavilions. If you step away from the rail at the edge of World Showcase Lagoon, you’ll get away from crowds and can have some potentially interesting photos of different parts of the world with fireworks exploding overhead.

With a lot of these spots, you’ll have far more breathing room and enjoy the show in a more intimate setting, and don’t really compromise much in terms of what you can see. Most guests flock to the railings, and those definitely offer a better view, but it’s not a huge advantage if all you care about is fireworks.

epcot fireworks cruise 2023

To that point, most of the pyro is visible even from the front of the park! The easiest location is simply straight backwards from World Showcase Lagoon, stopping before you get to the monorail track. This will also make leaving the park easier, as you’ll beat the crowd exiting. Just don’t try to watch up by Spaceship Earth, as it will mostly block the view of the fireworks.

The bottom line is that Luminous: The Symphony of Us fireworks are now much easier to see and significantly lower stakes than Harmonious or IllumiNations before it. This nighttime spectacular is definitely worth watching, but whether you want to camp out ~30 minutes in advance for a great spot with a view of the fountains and other effects  or  show up last-minute and simply be able to see the sky and hear the score is really up to you. While a bit more effort will be rewarded with enhancements, they’re relatively minor. The bottom line is that there’s no “wrong” way to watch Luminous. That is arguably the new nighttime spectacular’s biggest strengths over its predecessors!

Hi Tom, Have you experienced any of the dining packages for fireworks viewing yet? I was considering those since I’ll be with my 75 year old mother

' src=

I booked the Epcot firework cruise for my family of 6 as a surprise-. We arrived at the yacht club and boarded ( it actually can seat up to 10) snacks a soda was provided . We were driven around for about an hour before our very friendly captain parked up directly in front of the fireworks which provide a perfect view . It was one of the best memories off our holiday , my grandchildren loved it – if you are considering the firework cruise you won’t be disappointed & in my view much more cost effective and better experience than the dessert parties.

' src=

Great info, Tom, thank you!! I’ll use this in a few days 😀 What did you think about the new show?

' src=

Gorgeous photos as always, Tom. The one from the second level of Mitsukoshi Department Store is absolutely STUNNING!

' src=

Tom, any objection to the use of a photograph for a computer wallpaper? Perhaps on a rotating basis? Asking for a friend,.. 🙂

(also what if that friend charged himself 5 cents every time he opened his computer? Should you not then be entitled to some portion?)

Kidding aside I just discovered I could do that and it excites me to be able to change the background daily to one of your many delightful compositions,..

that is, if you grant permission,.

' src=

Are there good spots to view Epcot Forever from the Crescent Lake area, a la the Poly beach for MK fireworks?

' src=

I laughed at the “water tacos” description; albeit fitting. Do the NYE countdown fireworks use the stargate and tacos?

' src=

I am curious if you are aware of any handicap locations for viewing the fireworks, in both Epcot and Magic Kingdom. We are going over NYE this year and want to be prepared for where to go instead of walking around aimlessly trying to ask a cast member who may likely direct us in the wrong direction. Thanks!!

' src=

We sat near Norway and it was nice. I was able to find a bench for my mother who is in her 60’s to wait at until the show started. We got our spot about 1 hour ahead of time. All other straight on spots were taken well before that!

' src=

Where are the best spots if you are not inside Epcot?

' src=

What is the viewing like from the boats that you can reserve? We will be celebrating a birthday and the boat reservation looks like a great way to celebrate. Thoughts?

' src=

Did that one year boats park just beyond bridge near France . They don’t go any closer but the vie is unobstructed and you can get food an champagne for a priceLin

New EPCOT Nighttime Spectacular Replacing Disney Harmonious in 2023

By Author Ziggy Oskwarek

Posted on Last updated: September 12, 2023

In a surprising move, Disney has recently announced that a brand new nighttime spectacular is coming to EPCOT in 2023 and replacing Disney Harmonious .

Disney Harmonious EPCOT Fireworks

In this post, we are going to explain everything we know about this new nighttime spectacular coming to Walt Disney World , including potential opening dates, and other details such as its name , music , and what technology will be used in the show.

(UPDATE) – Disney has just shared some new details about EPCOT’s new nighttime spectacular “Luminous – The Symphony of US” including an opening date and new music for the show.

Make sure to read our Guide to Luminous – The Symphony of US for all the details.

Keep reading below for the original announcement and our thought about the project.

This is a new announcement and Disney hasn’t shared many details about the project yet, but as we learn more we’ll update this page, as well as answer any FAQs about the show you might have.

(UPDATE) – New Details for Disney Harmonious Replacement Show

Since we first found out about the new nighttime spectacular coming to EPCOT and replacing Disney Harmonious, Disney hasn’t really shared too many details about the show. That is until now.

New EPCOT fireworks show

At a recent media event, Disney released some new details about the overall EPCOT transformation project, including info about the Disney Harmonious replacement fireworks show which is coming to EPCOT later in 2023.

Much like its predecessors, this new show will invite guests to gather around World Showcase Lagoon for a show “that will unite us through commonalities of the heart in a dazzling display of fireworks, lasers, music, and light.

We also found out about the music for the show. According to Disney it will include “an original composition along with select songs from the Disney songbook, this new spectacular will remind us that we’re more alike than different, connecting our hearts together as one.”

Though we still don’t have a name for the new show, we did get a clearer timeframe for when we can expect it to debut. Disney announced it will debut “later this year,” so we at least know it will be ready sometime in 2023.

Our guess is that it will be ready by Fall 2023. EPCOT is going to be the center of the Disney100 celebration in Walt Disney World, and that is starting in the Fall. You can be sure executives will want to debut the new nighttime show for the celebration, which means it will have to be ready in the last quarter of the year.

We expect much more info on the new nighttime spectacular in EPCOT in the coming months so stay tuned for that. In the meantime, keep reading below for everything we know so far.

Disney Harmonious scene

After less than one year, Disney has already decided to cancel the EPCOT nighttime spectacular Disney Harmonious in favor of a new show around World Showcase Lagoon.

This has been quite a turbulent time for EPCOT nighttime spectaculars as it will be the 4th show in a span of fewer than 4 years.

Disney Harmonious was supposed to be the long-term replacement for Illuminations: Reflections of Earth , which had its final performance on September 30, 2019. But before Harmonious, there was also the holdover show EPCOT Forever , which debuted on October 1, 2019.

This new EPCOT nighttime fireworks show is in honor of the Disney100 Anniversary celebration as well as EPCOT’s 40th Anniversary. At the D23 Expo , Disney Parks Chairman Josh D’Amaro described it as “continuing the park’s legacy of inspiring nighttime entertainment on World Showcase Lagoon.

What is the New EPCOT Show About?

Disney Harmonious water screen

As of this writing, Disney has not given many details on just exactly what this new EPCOT show will include. The only thing we really know is that it is being made in honor of the Disney100 celebration .

That means it will likely celebrate important moments from the company’s past 100 years, and if I were to guess, it will feature many of the most popular IP from that time span.

So far Disney is saying it will “feature an original composition and evocative selections from the Disney songbook – all woven together to remind us that we are more alike than different.”

I know many are hoping for a show that is more unique in design and similar to Illuminations: Reflections of Earth, and so far it sounds like that is what they are going for. Let’s hope that it’s not similar to Harmonious in the way it basically just highlights company IP (the overall company trend). I would like to see it put together in a more thoughtful way and it’s not just a mismatch of Disney’s greatest hits.

Here’s hoping that it includes some inspirational non-movie music to go along with the music from the films that is sure to be featured.

What about the World Showcase Lagoon Barges?

Disney Harmonious barges in World Showcase Lagoon

Something many people are probably wondering is if the new EPCOT fireworks show will still use the gigantic barges that are currently located in World Showcase Lagoon.

From the moment they were installed, guests have complained about how much of an eyesore they are and how they ruin the sightlines across World Showcase Lagoon. I am happy to say that Disney has already confirmed they are taking down the barges once Disney Harmonious finishes in April. I wholeheartedly agree with this line of thinking and am happy to see them go.

Even though those screens and the huge octopus water screen have been tied down to the bottom of the lagoon, it seems that Disney realizes that no one likes them and it ruins the aesthetic of World Showcase when they are in there.

The only question is will Disney hang on to them in hopes of using them again at some point, or will they be destroyed? I would think that Disney has invested too much money to just throw them away at this point, but at least they are going away for the time being.

When is the New EPCOT Nighttime Fireworks Show Opening?

So far, we only know that the new nighttime spectacular coming to EPCOT is opening sometime in 2023 . Disney has not announced a specific date, but they have said it will debut “later in 2023,” which implies a Fall 2023 debut.

Disney Harmonious

Since Disney Harmonious debuted as part of Walt Disney World’s 50th Anniversary , it will remain in EPCOT at least through the end of the celebration. In fact, the last performance of Disney Harmonious will be on April 2, 2023.

D’Amaro did say that the new EPCOT fireworks show will debut in honor of the Disney 100th anniversary celebration which is happening in Fall 2023. However, we still don’t have a start date for that at this point in time, and we do know that the new show won’t be ready immediately.

Recently, Disney announced that EPCOT Forever is replacing Harmonious temporarily until the new show is ready. That could mean months, or even beyond 2023 if things don’t move quickly.

Disney Harmonious barge with water screen

It’s also worth noting that Disney has a terrible track record of getting nighttime spectaculars done in time. Disney Harmonious was supposed to debut at least one year earlier than it actually did and it was continuously delayed due to production and technical issues.

It’s highly likely that even if Disney has a target date in mind at this time, they are not going to share that with the general public until they are absolutely sure they will be able to meet that date.

We have no insider info, but our guess is that the new EPCOT show won’t debut until sometime in late Summer or Fall 2023 . That coincides with the start of the Disney100 celebration as well as what Disney has hinted to so far.

That gives Disney under a year to develop the new show from when it was announced, which is a mighty undertaking.

But this wasn’t the only news about a new nighttime spectacular coming to Walt Disney World. We also recently found out that Happily Ever After is returning to Disney’s Magic Kingdom and is replacing Disney Enchantment .

Magic Kingdom Fireworks Disney Enchantment

As much as we are not thrilled with Harmonious, we like Enchantment even less and are extremely happy Disney decided to bring back what we consider to be the second best nighttime show that’s ever played in Disney World (right behind Illuminations: Reflections of Earth).

This is a new announcement, so I’m sure we’ll be hearing much more about this show in the coming weeks and months. Whatever happens, it should be exciting times with 2 new nighttime spectaculars debuting at Disney World next year! Stay tuned for more soon!

My name is Ziggy and I love Disney, everything Disney! I grew up on Disney and it has and continues to be a huge part of my life. I started young when my parents took me to Disney World when I was 18 months old. Little did they know that would be the first of an uncountable number of trips we would take. I have so many amazing memories going to Disney with my family and friends and it has been interwoven into my DNA.

Friday 16th of June 2023

I loved “Illuminations“. I haven’t cared for anything since. I loved the torches around the lagoon. I think they should time the opening with the end of the war in Ukraine. I think that Putin and Zelenskyy should be honored guests at the opening of the Epcot Nighttime show. Celebrating a future where all people can thrive. That kind of hope could be felt at “Illuminations”.

Disneyland | galactic starcruiser space cocktails land at oga’s cantina in disneyland, review: the silver sea martini was better than i expected, but i'll never order the fiery mustafarian again..

epcot fireworks cruise 2023

A pair of interstellar cocktails once served aboard the failed $350 million Galactic Starcruiser at Walt Disney World can now be ordered at Oga’s Cantina in Disneyland if you never made it to the star-crossed Star Wars hotel or still long for a liquid reminder of your $5,000 voyage.

The Star Wars-themed cocktails are available through June 2 during the Season of the Force seasonal event at the wretched hive of scum and villainy in the Anaheim theme park.

@the.socal.local We’re trying out two new cocktails over at Oga’s Cantina at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge in Disneyland, the Silver Sea Martini that comes with a souvenir Chandrilan Chalice and the Fiery Mustafarian that comes with a souvenir Chandrilan Orb Glass. To read more about these new drinks as well as the new food available for Season of the Force visit OCRegister.com or check out the link in our bio. #disneyland #disneyparks #ogascantina #starwars #starwarsgalaxysedge #galaxysedge #disneyeats @Disney Parks ♬ Scenes where Darth Vader and monsters appear(782200) – Hollywood Labo

I ordered the Silver Sea Martini in the Chandrilan Chalice ($30) and the Fiery Mustafarian in the Chandrilan Orb ($35) and found one to be better than I expected and the other to be increasingly undrinkable.

The Chandrilan in the name of the Galactic Starcruiser drinks refers to the Chandrila Star Line that operated the Halcyon starcruiser — the intergalactic cruise ship central to the backstory of the Star Wars hotel that closed in 2023 after just over a year in operation.

I love lemonade — so I was intrigued by the Silver Sea Martini in the Chandrilan Chalice. The gin-based drink has a lemonade base with butterfly pea flower tea, honey, ginger syrup and mint syrup.

The butterfly pea flower tea gave the cocktail a purple color that looked otherworldly atop the internally lit bar in the Outer Rim spaceport cantina.

A big part of the experience at Oga’s Cantina is the feeling of stepping into a Star Wars movie. I can’t imagine Han Solo ever ordering a drink in a Chandrilan Chalice, but I could see myself sipping one aboard the Galactic Starcruiser.

The Fiery Mustafarian in the Chandrilan Orb at Oga's Cantina in Star Wars Galaxy's Edge in Disneyland. (Brady MacDonald/Orange County Register/SCNG)

That’s not the case with the Fiery Mustafarian in the Chandrilan Orb. I’ll never order the peach-flavored tequila-based drink again.

The Fiery Mustafarian is all about the gimmick of adding spicy lava syrup to your cocktail using a dropper that looks like a cigar tube. The idea is you can adjust the spice level to your taste with the dropper. But really what you are doing is adjusting the sweetness level — the more drops, the sweeter it gets. And once you’ve gone too far, there’s no going back.

I find most of the drinks served in Oga’s — and at Disneyland in general — to be far too sweet for me. So the notion of making my drink increasingly sweeter is unappealing. The spicy lava syrup gets its spice from ghost peppers — so with the increasing sweetness comes an increasing spiciness. That’s not what I’m looking for in a drink either.

At least you get to take the souvenir glasses home with you as a reminder of your visit to Oga’s Cantina — and the crash-and-burn fate of the Galactic Starcruiser .

Next time I go to Oga’s I’ll stick with my go-to order — the Fuzzy Tauntaun with peach vodka, peach schnapps and an orange and tangerine juice base. I love the signature mouth-numbing effect of the frothy foam top.

For the first time Rosatom Fuel Division supplied fresh nuclear fuel to the world’s only floating nuclear cogeneration plant in the Arctic

The fuel was supplied to the northernmost town of Russia along the Northern Sea Route.

epcot fireworks cruise 2023

The first in the history of the power plant refueling, that is, the replacement of spent nuclear fuel with fresh one, is planned to begin before 2024. The manufacturer of nuclear fuel for all Russian nuclear icebreakers, as well as the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, is Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC), a company of Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL that is based in Elektrostal, Moscow Region.

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactors of the icebreaking type. Unlike convenient ground-based large reactors (that require partial replacement of fuel rods once every 12-18 months), in the case of these reactors, the refueling takes place once every few years and includes unloading of the entire reactor core and loading of fresh fuel into the reactor.

The cores of KLT-40 reactors of the Akademik Lomonosov floating power unit have a number of advantages compared to the reference ones: a cassette core was used for the first time in the history of the unit, which made it possible to increase the fuel energy resource to 3-3.5 years between refuelings, and also reduce the fuel component of the electricity cost by one and a half times. The FNPP operating experience formed the basis for the designs of reactors for nuclear icebreakers of the newest series 22220. Three such icebreakers have been launched by now.

For the first time the power units of the Akademik Lomonosov floating nuclear power plant were connected to the grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020. The supply of nuclear fuel from Elektrostal to Pevek and its loading into the second reactor is planned for 2024. The total power of the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, supplied to the coastal grid of Pevek without thermal energy consumption on shore, is about 76 MW, being about 44 MW in the maximum thermal power supply mode. The FNPP generated 194 million kWh according to the results of 2023. The population of Pevek is just a little more than 4 thousand, while the FNPP has a potential for supplying electricity to a city with a population of up to 100 thousand people. After the FNPP commissioning two goals were achieved. These include first of all the replacement of the retiring capacities of the Bilibino NPP, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya TPP, which has already been operating for more than 70 years. Secondly, energy is supplied to the main mining companies in western Chukotka in the Chaun-Bilibino energy hub a large ore and metal cluster, including gold mining companies and projects related to the development of the Baimsk ore zone. In September 2023, a 110 kilovolt power transmission line with a length of 490 kilometers was put into operation, connecting the towns of Pevek and Bilibino. The line increased the reliability of energy supply from the FNPP to both Bilibino consumers and mining companies, the largest of which is the Baimsky GOK. The comprehensive development of the Russian Arctic is a national strategic priority. To increase the NSR traffic is of paramount importance for accomplishment of the tasks set in the field of cargo shipping. This logistics corridor is being developed due regular freight voyages, construction of new nuclear-powered icebreakers and modernization of the relevant infrastructure. Rosatom companies are actively involved in this work. Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL (Rosatom Fuel Division) includes companies fabricating nuclear fuel, converting and enriching uranium, manufacturing gas centrifuges, conducting researches and producing designs. As the only nuclear fuel supplier to Russian NPPs, TVEL supplies fuel for a total of 75 power reactors in 15 countries, for research reactors in nine countries, as well as for propulsion reactors of the Russian nuclear fleet. Every sixth power reactor in the world runs on TVEL fuel. Rosatom Fuel Division is the world’s largest producer of enriched uranium and the leader on the global stable isotope market. The Fuel Division is actively developing new businesses in chemistry, metallurgy, energy storage technologies, 3D printing, digital products, and decommissioning of nuclear facilities. TVEL also includes Rosatom integrators for additive technologies and electricity storage systems. Rosenergoatom, Joint-Stock Company is part of Rosatom Electric Power Division and one of the largest companies in the industry acting as an operator of nuclear power plants. It includes, as its branches, 11 operating NPPs, including the FNPP, the Scientific and Technical Center for Emergency Operations at NPPs, Design and Engineering as well as Technological companies. In total, 37 power units with a total installed capacity of over 29.5 GW are in operation at 11 nuclear power plants in Russia. Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC, Elektrostal) is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of fuel for nuclear power plants. The company produces fuel assemblies for VVER-440, VVER-1000, RBMK-1000, BN-600,800, VK-50, EGP-6; powders and fuel pellets intended for supply to foreign customers. It also produces nuclear fuel for research reactors. The plant belongs to the TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom.

Sights of Elektrostal, Moscow region

2024 Author : Harold Hamphrey | [email protected] . Last modified: 2023-12-17 10:06

In the Moscow region there is a small cozy town Elektrostal. Its sights for the most part have no historical value due to the fact that the city has a relatively small history. But for a visiting tourist or city dweller, they will be of interest. There is something to see, where to go to have an exciting leisure time.

Today the population of the city is 158 thousand people. Until the beginning of the 20th century there were several small workers' settlements here. After the opening of the electrometallurgical and equipment factories, the place began to be called the natural boundary of Calm. The construction of the railway made this settlement accessible, and workers and families flocked here to earn money. In 1925, the station was named Elektrostal, and the rapid increase in population allowed the village to receive the status of a city.

attractions elektrostal photo

The founder of the city is a prominent Russian industrialist Nikolai Vtorov. It was he who opened the plant here, creating, in fact, a city-forming enterprise that is still operating. In Soviet times, it was a closed facility, and it was not easy to get to work here.

Today Elektrostal is a promising industrial city with a great future and a heroic past. It bears the proud name "City of Military and Labor Glory".

You can learn about the sights of Elektrostal with descriptions and photos here. There are places for walking, outdoor activities and cultural development.

sights of the electric steel of the Moscow region

Those who come to the city by train are met by a monument to the metallurgist. It was installed in November 2017 for the 100th anniversary of the Elektrostal plant. The attraction is made in the style of constructivism. The monument quickly won the love of the townspeople, because this city is supported by ordinary workers.

Elektrostal attractions photo with description

Elektrost altsy and the founding father of the plant, Nikolai Vtorov, are honored. In 2002, a monument was opened in honor of him, which became a landmark of the city of Elektrostal. The bronze sculpture is installed on the site where once stood a monument to the leader of the world proletariat, V. I. Lenin. Times change, characters change. Today, the plant, founded a century ago, is the largest in Russia. Vtorov himself, whose fortune was estimated at 60 million rubles in gold, according to Forbes magazine, was the owner of the largest capital at the beginning of the century. He was a banker, an industrialist, an entrepreneur, a man of action.

The monument was erected byinitiative of the townspeople who wished to perpetuate the monument to the great man.

One of the popular places for spending weekends and evenings among citizens and guests of the city is the Park of Culture and Leisure. Here you can ride attractions for children and adults, play slot machines, rollerblade or bike. The park is divided into two zones. Fans of unhurried walks in the fresh air make a promenade on the Quiet Alley, and those who prefer outdoor activities flock to the Entertainment Alley. The park has a summer stage, where concerts and cafes are regularly held.

Elektrostal attractions

Until 1999, there was no central museum among the attractions of Elektrostal in the Moscow Region. The expositions were exhibited in schools, the house of culture, in factory museums. The city was closed, so there was no large influx of tourists and visitors. The appearance of the historical and art museum made it possible for residents and guests of the city to learn a lot of useful information about their native land, the formation of the production process, and the difficult years of the war. The exposition consists of paintings by local artists, historical artifacts, household items, documents, books and much more. The collection is updated regularly. It also hosts outdoor exhibitions, which are always popular with the townspeople.

One of the main attractions of Elektrostal, the photo of which is available to almost every resident or visitor, is the Main Alley. On herpassers-by like to stroll along shady paths, townspeople rest by the fountain after a hard shift at the plant. Flower beds are the decoration of the alley. In 2006, a flower festival was held here for the first time, which has become traditional. Each enterprise of the city and private individuals give residents a real composition of fresh flowers, which pleases with bright colors all summer long. A riot of colors, aromas and a flight of fantasy reigns here. Walking through the park, you can see Snow White with a basket, a bright well, a multi-tiered cake made from fresh flowers, hearts of lovers or a fabulous house. It is almost impossible not to take a photo against the background of these compositions.

There is a cultural center in the city. It hosts performances by local creative teams and visiting stars, performances and circus performances.

In 1971, the ice palace "Crystal" was opened in the city. Almost immediately, a children's and youth hockey team was organized, which gained sports fame. This is the home sports arena for the Elektrostal hockey team. Matches of different levels are held on the ice.

There are sections for children who go in for hockey or figure skating. Citizens come here with their families to cheer for their favorite team or go ice skating.

Elektrostal is a city with a heroic past. During the war years, more than 12 thousand citizens came to the recruiting station and went to the front to defend their homeland. Almost 4 thousand of them did not return from the battle. To these heroesdedicated to the memorial complex with the inextinguishable Eternal Flame, opened in 1968

But the electricians took part in the war in Afghanistan and Chechnya. By decision of the city authorities, their memory is also immortalized in the memorial complex.

It has become a good tradition for newlyweds to lay flowers at this monument.

attractions of the city of Elektrostal

In 1999, a museum and exhibition complex was opened in the city, where, in addition to the exhibition hall, there are numerous circles for children, classes for young people, and a creative workshop. Various festivals, exhibitions, city holidays and other events are held within the walls and on the territory of the complex, which attract many spectators.

Elektrostal attractions

Listing the sights of Elektrostal, it is impossible not to mention the temples. There are several of them in the city: the church of St. John of Kronstadt, St. Andrew's Church, the hospital church of St. Panteleimon. Another new church is being built. In appearance, the temples look ancient, monumental, in the Novgorod style. But they were all built at the end of the 20th century.

Let there be no ancient artifacts among the sights of Elektrostal. But on the other hand, all of them are connected with the history of the city, with everyday work and military exploits of ordinary residents.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).

Morris Challenge Youth Institute

The 2024 Morris Challenge Youth Institute  is the result of a partnership between the University of Minnesota Morris and the World Food Prize Foundation offering youth institute to high school students in west central Minnesota. The program  connects high school students from West Central Minnesota with research and industry leaders working in agricultural, food and natural resource-related fields. Students learn how these leaders are making a positive impact - in their communities and beyond – and receive feedback on their research paper presentations.

The World Food Prize Foundation was started by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Dr. Norman Borlaug, a farm kid from Cresco, Iowa who earned Bachelors, Masters, and Doctoral degrees from the University of Minnesota.  Borlaug believed “food is the moral right of all who are born into this world” and worked to eliminate wheat rust and other ag-related challenges that threatened the world’s food supply. He is credited with saving over a million lives and encouraging youth to get involved and help solve complex issues through programs like the Morris Challenge Youth Institute.
