Entering the United States on a temporary basis generally requires one to first obtain an appropriate visa. A U.S. visit that is temporary and for pleasure, for business (NOT employment), or for medical treatment typically require a visitor visa.
While it does not permit gainful employment while in the U.S., the B-1 for business is appropriate for certain activities related to commercial transactions. This visa category is used for personal and/or domestic attendants of certain nonimmigrants and U.S. citizens. The B-2 category is intended for tourism, social visits, certain medical treatments, and participation in amateur sports, music, and similar events. This category is also used for domestic partners not in a marital relationship, to accompany their qualifying partners.
Under applicable laws and regulations, B-1/B-2 visitors may be admitted for a period of one year, with the potential to extend the visit another six months; however, an initial admission period of six months is typical. Within the legal limits, the acceptable period of admission is determined at the port of entry, based on the purpose of the visit and other discretionary factors.
Individuals from designated countries may request the B-1/B-2 visa be waived by using the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) for temporary visits to the United States. The VWP follows a separate set of procedures and has specific requirements and restrictions different from the B-1/B-2 category.
Requirements
- Ability to demonstrate strong nonimmigrant intent with regard to the proposed trip to the United States [Ties outside of the United States, including family, employment and/or other financial ties are used to prove nonimmigrant intent.]
- A residence outside the United States
- Ability to show the U.S. trip as purely temporary and for pleasure or certain permitted business activities
- Financial ability to remain in the United States for the requested timeframe, without U.S. employment

How to Find an Immigration Lawyer That’s Right for You
March 16, 2021 Immigration News
The U.S. immigration system can be overwhelming. An attorney can help you navigate that journey. For people with straight forward cases, CitizenPath has been an affordable way to easily prepare USCIS forms correctly. Our service was created by lawyers, but we are not a legal service. For individuals with more complicated cases, including applicants with a criminal history or immigration violations, we recommend the help of an immigration lawyer. And we want to help you find an immigration lawyer that’s right for you.
You deserve a good lawyer. While the most experienced lawyers tend to be more expensive, there are plenty of skilled immigration lawyers if you know how to find them. Regardless if you’re working with a lawyer in private practice or non-profit, it’s important to find an immigration lawyer that is experienced and can help you navigate the complexity of your case.
When to Find an Immigration Lawyer
It’s important to recognize when it’s time to get professional help from an immigration attorney. If you’ve already run into a situation that requires expert assistance or you have a complicated case, it is probably time to find an immigration lawyer. If you have a history which includes immigration violations (e.g. overstayed visa, ordered removed, etc.) or an arrest record, reach out to an immigration lawyer before requesting immigration benefits. Not sure? When using CitizenPath to prepare USCIS forms , we’ll provide a warning when we think you need to find an immigration lawyer for advice.
It’s wise to consult with an immigration lawyer before filing any USCIS forms if you:
- Entered the U.S. without inspection
- Failed the leave the U.S. before a visa expired
- Were refused entry at a port of entry
- Were apprehended by Customs and Border Protection
- Signed a stipulated removal order
- Were ever in exclusion, deportation, or removal proceedings
- Have ever been charged with a misdemeanor or felony criminal offense
Even if the problem occurred many years ago, it’s important that you understand how it affects your situation today. An immigration lawyer can analyze your situation and explain it to you.

Understanding the Differences in Legal Representation
Non-profit agencies that provide BIA accredited legal services can provide services at a low cost or sometimes at no cost. They are a great resource and help many people each year. However agencies like these can rarely meet all of the demand, resulting in long wait times. Non-profit agencies may also have limited scope or do not provide the expertise in all areas of immigration law. When searching for low-cost immigration services, make sure the organization that you choose can address your specific situation. To find low-cost immigration services, visit ImmigrationLawHelp.org .
A private immigration attorney can generally address a broader range of cases than non-profits with specialization. You may also find a private attorney to be more accessible and willing to spend time answering all of your questions. It is important that you research an immigration attorney’s background before hiring him/her. To search for a private immigration lawyer near you, visit www.ailalawyer.org .
4 Tips to Find the Best Immigration Lawyer for You
Immigration lawyers to avoid.
Not all lawyers are good lawyers. That goes for immigration lawyers too. There are some red flags to avoid these situations.
Avoid attorneys who solicit your business at an immigration office or court house. The legal profession sees this as unethical behavior. This technique for finding clients targets you when you are potentially vulnerable.
Some immigration consultants and “notarios” may exceed boundaries. Only attorneys may provide legal advice. If you have one of the problems listed above, it’s very difficult for consultants not to provide unauthorized legal advice. This could get you in trouble.
Lawyers are well paid for being creative and resourceful, but not to the extent that it breaks the law. If your lawyer suggests that you do things that you believe are in violation of immigration or criminal rules, avoid this situation. At the very minimum, talk to another attorney for a second opinion. If you are caught, it could mean potentially permanent damage to your immigration hopes.
Are lawyers worth the cost?
Immigration lawyers can be expensive, and that’s why many people with straight forward situations will use CitizenPath instead. Our services typically begin with a page of initial screening questions. Most people that can answer these questions without receiving a warning can also use our services to prepare common USCIS forms. In many cases, applicants that do have a small legal issue can continue using our service once they have spoken to an attorney.
But not everyone should use CitizenPath. As mentioned previously, individuals with complex problems will generally need to find an immigration attorney for assistance. When problems arise, an attorney is best trained to unwind that situation and keep you out of deeper trouble.
CitizenPath cannot assist with deportation defense, waivers of inadmissibility, and provisional unlawful presence waivers. And while these forms may be deceivingly simply, there is significant background work to confirm eligibility and document it with evidence. Always find an immigration attorney for these situations.

Tourist Visa Lawyers in Phoenix, AZ
It’s no secret that the u.s. is a hot spot for tourism and business, but don’t let that fool you about the tourist visa application – the process can be discouraging. we’ve seen it happen before – a business meeting missed, a vacation cancelled, a college campus tour lost, all because a tourist visa wasn’t approved or got delayed..
Before you dive in to the process, let our immigration attorneys give you some advice and guidance on how to navigate the petition. We’ll ensure that the package is complete, the forms filled out correctly and the purpose of your visit explained carefully.
About Tourist Visas
Tourist or visitor visas are nonimmigrant visas for those foreign nationals wishing to travel within the U.S. temporarily, either for pleasure, business or a combination thereof. To receive a tourist visa, the nonimmigrant has to show proof that the visit is for a specific purpose and that he or she fully intends to return home. It is easier for some nonimmigrants to obtain a tourist visa than others, depending on the country of origin.
Visas for business purposes are called B-1 visas. Tourism, pleasure or visiting visas are called B-2 visas. The applicable visa application form is the DS-160. You will also need to supply a photograph in a certain format. These forms can be found on the internet on the U.S. Consulate or Embassy website.
Applicants between the ages of 14 and 79 are scheduled for an interview at the office of the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in their country of origin before the visa is issued.
Tourist Visa Qualifications (B-1)
For the U.S. Embassy or consulate to issue you a B-1 visa, you need to explain the purpose of your visit:
- To visit friends or family
- Attendance at a conference
- Sightseeing
- To take classes
You should have a plan in mind and a date by which you plan to exit the country. This can include an itinerary of the places or events you plan to visit with the estimated dates so that the visits can be done within the time allotted on the visa. Also, have a budget for the expenses of traveling within the U.S. and allow for unexpected expenses. Generally, it is safe to assume that it will be more expensive in some areas of the U.S. than others.
The immigration official will also not issue you a visa unless you can provide proof that you have a home or residence in your country of origin or have significant family ties or connections, and that you have permission to travel from your country and to return. You also need to show that you possess the financial means to travel to and from the U.S., or that someone else is willing and able to pay for your expenses.
You may not use the B-1 visa to sell products or engage in any business enterprise or work for a fee. You cannot provide consultations, attend trade conventions, or be a reporter for a foreign publication under a B-1 visa. You can, however, combine a B-1 visa with a B-2 visa if you want to engage in some kind of business activity.
Other uses of a B-1 visa include:
- Planning to get married but not applying for a green card and intending to return home
- Accompanying someone who has a B-2 visa, such as family members
- Students investigating American colleges for possible enrollment at a later time
If you wish to come to the U.S. to treat a medical condition, you need to show the following:
- You have a medical diagnosis that requires treatment in the U.S.
- You have authorization or confirmation that an American doctor or medical clinic is willing to treat you for this condition
- An estimate of the cost of transportation and medical care and how it will be paid
- Required Documentation
- You must show the following documentation to apply for a tourist visa:
- A passport that is valid for at least six months beyond your period of stay in the U.S.; there are some exceptions for certain countries
- Form DS-160, Nonimmigrant Visa Application
- Application fee payment receipt ($160 USD). This may not be required until after your interview
- Photo that fits a certain format
- Other documents that may be required include evidence supporting:
- Purpose of your trip
- Intent to depart and return to native country
- If going to a third country, have a visa from that nation or permission
- Evidence of financial means or that someone else is paying your expenses
- A letter from your employer or evidence of family connections at home
Once your application has been received, you will receive notice for an interview unless you are exempted because of age (80 years of age or older).
Applying for a tourist visa can be a complex process. Contact our office today so that we may assist you with all of your immigration needs.

The B-2 visa is used by those visitors who are coming to the United States for a pleasant visit. Meeting and staying with friends, family or just taking a vacation to one of the many popular destinations in the United States is the purpose of the B-2 visa. It can also be used for visits for medical treatments, participation in amateur sports, music and other types of events where the visitor is not being paid a wage for attending. Port of entry officers have the ultimate say on how long the visa will granted for; typically the limit is 6 months, however, depending on the purpose of the visit, the officers can limit the length of stay to less than 6 months.
Call Fayad Law, P.C. if you have any questions or require assistance in obtaining a B-2 visitors visa. FAQs - FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
There are dozens of different types of visas available under the provisions of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA), but they can all be placed in one of two categories: immigrant and nonimmigrant visas . The former is for individuals who are hoping to establish permanent residency with a green card and perhaps even to pursue the path to naturalization and citizenship . The latter is for those who are only planning a temporary visit to the United States, such as for the purpose of conducting business or attending school.
The INA sets limits on the number of people who will be permitted to immigrate to the United States each year using certain types of visas, while other visas are unlimited. Family immigration visas for the immediate relatives of U.S. citizens are available on an unlimited basis, while there are annual quotas set for the relatives of lawful permanent residents and extended family of citizens, with a maximum quota of 480,000. The number of employment immigration visas is limited to 140,000 per year.
Pathways to citizenship include service in the United States military and adoption, but a large percentage of all people who become citizens do so through the process of naturalization. The basic qualifications for naturalization include:
- Living in the U.S. as a permanent resident for 5 years (or 3 years for a spouse of a U.S. citizen)
- Being at least 18 years of age
- Living within the state where you will apply for citizenship for at least 3 months prior to the application date
- Being physically present in this country for at least half of the past 5 years
- Maintaining continuous residence in this country from the date you submit your application for naturalization
- Being able to read, write and speak English
- Have a basic understanding of U.S. government and civics
It is also necessary to supply evidence that you are a person of good moral character and are attached to the principles of the U.S. Constitution. We can assist you with proving these factors, as well as preparing your petition and helping you get ready for the tests.
In June of 2012, the Obama Administration directed the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to begin applying a policy that is referred to as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). Under deferred action, DHS is exercising discretion in its execution of the laws concerning deportation and removal of immigrants who are illegally present in the United States. Deferred action is not a change to the existing law, but is instead a change in the way that the law is being applied. You may qualify for relief under DACA if you were younger than 31 years of age on June 15, 2012, came to the U.S. before your 16th birthday, have continuously resided in this country since June 15, 2007 and are either currently in school or have already graduated from high school or earned your general education development (GED) certificate, among other criteria. With deferred action, you may be able to avoid being deported, though it does not grant any change of immigration status.
In its review of immigrant visa petitions, the U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Services (USCIS) weighs factors related to the ties that the prospective immigrant has in the United States and the reasons why he or she wants or needs to come to live in this country. For example, a family immigration petition will not be approved unless the foreign national has immediate relatives such as a spouse, mother or father, child or sibling already living here as a citizen or green card holder. An employment immigration petition is more likely to receive approval if the applicant has a job offer in this country and is coming to fill a position that cannot reasonably be filled from the local labor market. A foreign national who is fleeing persecution in his or her home country may be granted an immigrant visa as a refugee or asylee.
There are many strategies for challenging a removal action. If the proposed deportation is based on a criminal conviction, it may be possible to appeal the conviction in order to have it overturned. Another option is to petition for cancellation of removal, a type of immigration relief which is available to people who are of good moral character and whose deportation would subject a family member who is a citizen or permanent resident to extreme hardship. The key to success in stopping deportation is to take immediate action by hiring a Virginia immigration attorney from our firm as soon as possible. What Is a Visitor Visa?
Visitor visas are nonimmigrant visas—they are for foreign citizens who want to enter the United States for a temporary stay. Whether for recreational traveling purposes or otherwise, a visitor visa may be a smart choice for someone seeking entry into the country for a brief period of time. Types of visitor visas include B-1 visa, B-2 visa, or a combination of both purposes B-1/B-2 visa.
What is the Difference Between B-1 and B-2?
B-1 visitor visas are nonimmigrant visas for citizens of foreign countries. Generally, those entering the country for business is categorized as a B-1 visa, while pleasure or tourist activities is categorized as B-2. These visas are frequently used by foreign nationals who wish to engage in legitimate business activities such as conventions, conferences, and permissible activities.
How to Apply for B-1 Visa
To qualify as a nonimmigrant visitor for business, the person applying must intend to keep their foreign residence abroad, show that they have sufficient means of support during their stay, and establish that he or she intends to leave the United States at the end of the temporary stay.
Benefits and Limitations of B-1
Visas are typically issues for six months, and extensions can be granted in six-month increments, although most are no longer than 3 months. A business visitor will generally be granted only a period of entry necessary to conduct business such as research, litigation, consulting, and commercial transactions. The business visa is ideal for U.S. companies desiring to bring overseas workers to the United States for brief periods and to assist with important projects.
The B-1 visa comes with the following allowances and limitations:
- The B-1 Visa holder cannot work in the U.S.
- The visit should be associated with international trade
- The visit should benefit the company abroad
- Employee cannot be paid by a U.S. entity
- Work in the U.S. cannot be controlled by the U.S. entity
Have questions about the application process or need more information about B-1? Call (800) 909-8129 to speak with a visitor visa attorney in NJ today!
What is a B-2 Visa and How Do You Qualify?
While the majority of these are for tourism, travel, major sporting events, and visiting friends and family, this is also the visa you might pursue if you were seeking to enter the United States for medical purposes. If several members of your family are planning on visiting, each must submit a separate visitor visa application. The B-2 visas are usually granted for six months, even if the period of your stay is actually going to be less than that. Employment is not allowed in the visitor visa category.
In order to get a visitor visa, you must have:
- A valid passport that does not expire for at least six months past the time you are planning on leaving after your visit.
- You are required to provide a current photo of yourself, and only a specific format and size is acceptable.
B-2 Visa Application Process
During the application process, you’re going to be asked for information in addition to your required documentation.
You must include proof that:
- Your stay is for a limited duration of time
- You intend to depart at the expiration of stay
- You are maintaining a foreign residence that you intend to return to
- You maintain ties to your home country
- You have adequate financial resources to support yourself during this time
- You will engage in legitimate visitor activities. If visiting friends and relatives, you will need letters of invitation from them noting the same.
Applying for a B-2 Tourist / Visitor Visa
After the application is submitted, you will be required to attend a visa interview, which is most often held at the U.S. embassy or consulate in your home country. In some situations, it is possible to change visa categories from within the U.S. such as a student visa to a visitor or a J-1 (without 2 year home country requirement) to visitor visa.
The laws for immigration visas are complex and confusing. In order to ensure you will be able to travel legally as a visitor to the United States, it is very important to seek out a New Jersey visitor visa who can help you through the immigration process.
What is the ESTA Visa Waiver Program?
Certain individuals may be able to travel to the United States without a visitor visa. By using the ESTA visa waiver program, individuals may enter the U.S. for a 90-day period.
If you are admitted to the country under ESTA, you may also be able to take short trips to other parts of the continent, including Canada, Mexico, and nearby islands. However, there are several restrictions to how you’re able to travel. Not everyone may be eligible to use a visa waiver.
About the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) Application
When applying to the VWP, keep in mind that the waiver does not exempt individuals from other requirements for travel to the U.S. You must have a valid Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA), and you must still meet the requirements of a B-class visitor visa for tourism or business.
We can help individuals through the application process and ensure all of the travel eligibility requirements are satisfied. A VWP may exempt someone from needing a visa, but it does not exempt them from international travel guidelines.
VWP Restrictions of Travel Purposes
Since you must meet the requirements of a B-class visitor visa when using the VWP, you may not engage in all kinds of travel purposes. Under the VWP program, you may not travel for study on credit, work in foreign information media, permanent residency, or employment.
Remember that this is in terms of the purpose of your travel—you may still be able to apply for permanent residency and a visa status change once you are in the United States, but the purpose of your travelling may not be only to apply for permanent residency. For example, if you enter the country on a VWP and later decide to marry a U.S. citizen, you may apply for permanent residency without having to leave. However, before you do you should speak to a lawyer.

The Most Beautiful Stations on the Moscow Metro
You might have heard that there are some beautiful metro stations in Moscow. Soviet decorations, chandeliers, mosaic painting and statues are common in many of the stations. The good news is that the Moscow Metro does not cost a lot of money and many of the most beautiful stations on the Moscow metro are on the same line, so you can almost get on and off at each station to visit these. Over the New Year holidays, I had a free afternoon and decided to visit some of these stations. Check out what I found below…..
The main stations that you will want to visit are on the Number 5 line, also known as the Circle Line. An advantage of this line is that you can get to it very easily and quickly no matter where you are in Moscow. The announcements on the metro are in Russian as well as English so you don’t need to worry if your Russian language skills are not good.
If, like me, you arrive in Moscow via train from Kyiv , then you will arrive at a metro station which many Muscovites believe to be the most beautiful of them all…..
Kievskaya metro station was opened in 1954 and features white marble walls which curve upwards and have with large mosaics surrounded by a gold trim in a very classical style. The mosaics depict life in Ukraine and was designed by a Ukrainian who wanted to display Ukraine’s influence and contribution to Soviet Russia.

Going into battle
Belorusskaya
If you look at a map of the metro , you will want to go in a clockwise direction on the circle line. So you will want to get on the train going in the Barrikadnaya direction and not Park Kultury. Stay on this line until you reach the 2nd station, Belorusskaya. This station was built in 1952 and like Kievskaya also features white marble pylons and a plaster ceiling.
The ceiling features 12 mosaics in an octagonal shape depicting Belarusian life, while the tiling on the floor is said to resemble a Belarusian quilt. One of the passageway exits of the station has a statue called ‘Belarusian Partisans’ of three men wearing long coats, holding guns and carrying a flag.”

Three men carrying guns, holding the flag…
Mayakovskaya
To get to the next station, we need to change onto the green line (line 2) and go just one stop to the station of Mayakovskaya. This station has an art deco theme and, for some, resembles an elaborate ballroom. The columns are faced with stainless steel and pink rhodonite while the marble walls and ceiling have 34 mosaics with the theme “24-hour Soviet Sky. Apparently, Stalin resided here during the 2nd World War as the station was used as a command post for Moscow’s anti-aircraft regiment.

Novoslobodskaya
It’s time to get back on the metro and return to Belorusskaya. At Belorusskaya, change to the circle line again and continue clockwise to the next station, Novoslobodskaya. With its 32 stained glass panels, this station reminds me of a church. The panels were designed by Latvian artists and are surrounded by a brass border.

The golden trim around artwork is also very common
Prospekt Mira
Back on the metro and again just one stop until our next station, Prospekt Mira. This station was originally called Botanichesky Sad after the nearby Botanical Gardens of the Moscow State University. The pylons are covered in white marble and decorated with floral bas-relief friezes. The ceiling is decorated with casts and several cylindrical chandeliers.

Notice the floral decoration
Komsomolskaya
On the metro once more and once more we are going just one stop to the next station – Komsomolskaya. This station is famous for its its yellow ceiling. The chandeliers in this station are huge. The photos below do not do this station justice. For me, this station resembles a presidential palace. You hace to see it for yourself to truly appreciate it.
Because of it’s location, this is one of the busiest stations in the Moscow metro as it serves three of the main train stations in the city – Leningradsky, Yaroslavsky, and Kazansky so be prepared for a lot of people.

Elektrozavodskaya
When you are ready to leave Komsomolskaya metro station behind, then get back on the circle line and go one stop to Kurskaya and change to the blue line (line 3) and go to two stops to the Elektrozavodskaya station. This station gets it’s name from a nearby electric light bulb factory and has a somewhat industrial but also futuristic style, with 6 rows of circular lamps (there are 318 lamps in total). I think this is one of the most beautiful stations on the Moscow metro for how unique it is. The station was opened in 1944 after a delay because of the 2nd World War and features 12 marble bas-reliefs of the struggle on the home front during the war.

Ploschad Revolyutsii
Back on the metro line 3 (but in the other direction), getting off at the 3rd stop – Ploschad Revolyutsii (Revolution Square). This is located underneath the square in Moscow of the same name and is a short walk from Red Square in the city centre. It is the perfect place to end a visit around Moscow’s metro. The station features red and yellow marble arches with a total of 76 sculptures in between each arch. The sculptures are supposed to represent the people of the Soviet Union and include soldiers, farmers, industrial workers, children etc… I noticed a lot of people touching the golden chicken in the photo below as well as the show of the woman. I am assuming that this is for good luck.

Sculpture of the people of the Soviet Union

These are some of what I think are the most beautiful stations on the Moscow metro. Which ones are your favourite? Would you add any to this list?

Kievskaya definitely caught me off guard. Didn’t know Moscow metro stations were THIS extravagant! Mayakovskaya is gorgeous too with the marble walls and mosaics. I might just need to book a flight over to admire all of these!
Do it! Kievskaya was my first introduction to the Moscow metro as I got an overnight train from Kyiv.
You know, in the States, all we ever hear is bad stuff about Russia. It’s nice to see other (and lovely!) dimensions of such a controversial place.
It’s the same in the UK which is why I prefer going to see somewhere and making up my own mind. It’s all ‘politics and bullshit’ as I say
I went to Moscow about 13years for Christmas and went to train stations, so I can see these amazing mosaics and chandeliers. I agree with you that are beautiful Stations for sure and I could of wandered around for days. I think Kievskaya is definitely my favourite out of them all and I even have some similar pictures as you.
I imagine Moscow would have been a little different 13 years ago but these stations have probably always looked beautiful
Food and Footprints
You chose some great stations for this write up! Beautiful details in these stations and would love to visit them sometime. Particularly like the Komsomolskaya station with that yellow ceiling!
Thank you very much. Komsomolskaya seems to be a lot of peoples favourite stations too
Sumit Surai
Wow! Without the text I would have thought them to be some museum or gallery.
I know exactly what you mean!
Rosie Fluskey
Wow, it is just stunning! How does anyone get to work with so much to look at. I’m surprised at the very bourgeois-looking Komsomolskaya station. I would have thought it was all too Tzarist looking, but then I haven’t been to Russia yet lol. This has just made me want to go more!
Wow, that’s a lot of artwork. I wonder how old some of these pieces are?
Generally most of the stations are from 1940-1960 approximately. The later stations are more functional than style.
My mother-in-law was in Moscow fifty years ago and still raves about the metro stations. So far, I could not imagine much. But now! The pictures are great and I think it’s almost a pity that this splendor is underground. But for every user of the Metro can enjoy a free trip to the world of art. Susanne
True. It is like having a free trip to an art museum/gallery. I hope that you can one day visit Moscow and see for yourself.
Oh wow, I would never have known that these were metro stations. The ceilings remind me of how you need to look up sometimes, even in the commuter rush!
It is true about life in general, we just go from A to B looking directly in front of us instead of around us
Wow, I would have never guessed that these were stations. The decor is so pretty and not one I’m used to seeing at metro stations. Love the ceiling at The Komsomolskaya metro station.
They certainly don’t look like metro stations. The ceiling there is one of my favourites too!

Politics latest: MoD contractor hacked by China 'has contracts across Whitehall'
The defence secretary has given a statement about a hacking attack on the UK's Ministry of Defence, which Sky News understands China was behind. The government has been criticised for not naming the perpetrator, and concern is mounting over the contractor that was targeted.

Our deputy political editor Sam Coates has been giving his reaction to the naming of the contractor at the centre of a Ministry of Defence hack.
Defence Secretary Grant Shapps confirmed SSCL (Shared Services Connected Ltd) is the contractor after it was identified by shadow defence secretary John Healey in the House of Commons.
It comes after Sky News revealed last night the Chinese state had hacked the Armed Forces' payroll system .
China has denied any involvement.
Sky News has approached SSCL and Sopra Steria for a comment.
In the meantime, Sam notes the company's website "boasts" of playing a "central role in delivering the MoD's vision to transform core payroll, HR, and pension services" for military personnel and veterans.
In the case of this hack targeting the MoD, the affected data includes names, bank details, and in some cases addresses.
But Sam notes SSCL "has several contracts across the MoD and works elsewhere across Whitehall" and there will have to be an investigation into whether any other data could be vulnerable.
He says he's been told the government "is looking very closely at whether SSCL has committed any kind of mistake or allowed a vulnerability to creep into their systems".
"It sounds as though the relationship between the government and SSCL could get quite sticky," he adds.
But whatever SSCL has to say, Sam says the pressure ultimately lies with the government because of the decision to outsource the work in the first place.
"That is problematic, and the question is could it happen again."
We've just had a statement from the Home Office amid chaos at UK airports due to a nationwide issue with the border system.

"We are working closely with Border Force and affected airports to resolve the issue as soon as possible and apologise to all passengers for the inconvenience caused."

The government is "gaslighting" the public about the state of the economy, the shadow chancellor has said.
Rachel Reeves attacked the Conservatives in a speech in the City of London, as the opposition takes the fight to the government on their own turf ahead of the general election.
Running a strong economy has long been the focus of Conservative election campaigns.
And with a raft of economic data coming out this week, Ms Reeves is looking to get ahead of the government's messaging - saying Chancellor Jeremy Hunt and Prime Minister Rishi Sunak claiming the economy is improving is "deluded".
Read the full story here:
Over a year ago, Rishi Sunak made five pledges for voters to judge him on.
The prime minister met his promise to halve inflation by the end of 2023.
But with the general election approaching, how is Mr Sunak doing on delivering his other promises?
You can see the progress for yourself below:
Chaos has been reported at airports across the UK - as two airports have confirmed a nationwide border issue.
A Heathrow spokesperson said: "Border Force is currently experiencing a nationwide issue which is impacting passengers being processed through the border.
"Our teams are supporting Border Force with their contingency plans to help resolve the problem as quickly as possible and are on hand to provide passenger welfare. We apologise for any impact this is having to passenger journeys."
Manchester Airport also confirmed that the UK Border System is down as part of a nationwide outage.
It said its teams are working to assist passengers in the airport.
Sky News has contacted the Home Office for comment and further details:

The government's proposal to make single-sex toilets mandatory in new bars, restaurants, offices, and shopping centres is a "distraction technique that targets trans people", a drag queen has said.
Crystal, a Canadian-British drag performer who featured on RuPaul's Drag Race UK, told Sky News the legislation is to distract people from a "flailing government".
"I don't think this policy will do anything to protect anyone. There's no evidence to suggest that mixed bathrooms are inherently more unsafe than sex-segregated ones," the 38-year-old said.

Finally on Politics Hub With Sophy Ridge , we are looking at joke candidates in elections after London mayor Sadiq Khan gave a nod to his challenger Count Binface at his swearing-in ceremony on Tuesday.
Mr Khan has started his historic third term after his election win over the weekend.
"It would be nice to take a moment to celebrate becoming the first person in British political history to win successive victories over Count Binface," the Labour mayor said.
"Believe me, he made me work hard for it."
Count Binface secured 24,260 votes in the London mayoral election, beating Britain First candidate Nick Scanlon, who stormed off the stage at the results ceremony while attacking Mr Khan's record.
Mr Khan said Count Binface's victory over the far-right party was "another reason to love London".

We're now hearing from tonight's panel on the issue of Israel and Gaza, which is still very much dominating British politics.
Amid public controversy about Labour's stance over the last few months, Tom Hamilton , former Labour head of research, says it's "clear that Labour's position has moved quite a lot since the atrocities of 7 October".
He says that's party due to "internal pressures" but also "the way that Israel has behaved".
He goes on to say there are "completely legitimate questions that Labour MPs and others are asking about whether Israel's course of action is sensible for itself, and whether it is overstepping certain moral lines".
"Labour's position's quite clearly evolved over the last few months as a result of that," he says.
Baroness Kate Fall , Tory peer and former deputy chief of staff to David Cameron, says the UK has been "a trusted friend to Israel", but has "also asked for them to think sometimes before taking a certain action", such as the invasion of Rafah.
She notes that people in Gaza are on the brink of famine, and hostages are still being held by Hamas.
"I feel this is just a very depressing moment," she says, and "people are feeling heated for very obvious reasons".
Asked if the debates in parliament make any difference, Mr Hamilton says MPs have a right to express their views.
"The problem is, it isn't the UK's Foreign Office that is doing anything on either side," he says, aside from delivering aid.
On Labour, he adds that the party "clearly will" come under more pressure from some of its voters to speak out more forcefully on this issue, but it "shouldn't overreact for electoral reasons".
We are moving on now to events in the Middle East, and hearing from our chief political correspondent Jon Craig about the urgent question in the Commons earlier and contributions from MPs.
It came amid concern over Israel's offensive in Rafah, an area of Gaza where many people are sheltering.
He says: "This was the most heated debate on Gaza since the attacks on Israel on 7 October.
"For nearly an hour and a half, Andrew Mitchell, the deputy foreign secretary, faced tough questioning - emotions ran high, and it got very heated."
Jon explains that Labour benches were packed with many making interventions, but some Tory MPs were also "questioning Israel's actions and demanding a tougher stance".
There was "really tough language" from opposition MPs, with talk of war crimes and genocide - rejected strongly by Mr Mitchell.
Jon also notes there was support for Israel "from long-time supporters" such as Andrew Percy and Theresa Villiers.
But he singles out the ex-home secretary, Suella Braverman, who was "uncompromising" in her support for Israel, saying Israel should be allowed to "finish the job" ( read more here ).
