As well as being the state capital, Lansing also acts an important center of commerce, education and culture for all of Mid-Michigan. While it may not have the big city sights, lights and action of larger metropolises, its picturesque setting and lively cultural life mean that it still has a lot going for it.

Located at the spot where the Grand River meets the Red Cedar River, the city was founded in 1835 and named the state capital just over a decade later. This contributed greatly to its development with grand governmental buildings and modern museums now peppering its downtown.

Thanks to Michigan State University’s large student population, it has a dynamic feel with plenty of cultural events and festivals taking place over the course of the year. Add in its attractive Old Town and pretty River Trail and you’ll see why there are plenty of things to do in Lansing.

12. Turner-Dodge House

Head just a short distance up the Grand River from downtown and you’ll come across the handsome Turner-Dodge House . Packed with fine old furnishings and period pieces, it exhibits some exquisite Georgian Revival-style architecture with tours taking you all around its elegant interior.

While the massive mansion was originally built by the Turners in 1855, renovations by the Dodges around half a century later almost completely changed its appearance. Nowadays, its two-story front porch is propped up by enormous Ionic columns with two large wings lying to either side.

On tours, you’ll hear all about the progressive pioneers who owned the property and the significant contributions they made to the development of the capital and state. After having seen all its antique furniture and original artifacts, you can wander back along the River Trail to the center.

11. Hawk Island Park

Despite being surrounded by the city, Hawk Island Park is a very peaceful spot to immerse yourself in nature and enjoy some outdoor activities. Set on the opposite side of town from the historic house museum, it has a lovely lake and lots of trails for visitors to explore.

Asides from swimming and splashing about in its refreshing waters, you can relax on the beach and play volleyball on its sandy courts. There are also fishing docks where anglers can cast out their line and a stand to rent paddleboats and rowboats at.

While summer lends itself to lounging by the lake and enjoying all its gorgeous green spaces, some terrific tubing and sledding can be enjoyed in winter. The park also has plenty of picnic areas and a playground for people to use and is accessible via the River Trail.

10. Abrams Planetarium

Very much a hidden gem, the Abrams Planetarium puts on amazing shows where you gaze up at the night’s sky and see all its stars and constellations in great detail. Part of the beautiful Michigan State University campus, its smallish site also contains some interesting exhibits that cover the mysteries of the cosmos.

Since first opening in 1963, the planetarium has welcomed generations of families come to enjoy its scintillating science shows. Thanks to its state-of-the-art digital system, you can see high-definition images of the Earth, Mars and other planets plastered across the inside of its dome.

Besides sitting in the sky theater and staring up at the heavens, guests can learn about our universe and its innumerable galaxies in both its exhibit hall and black light gallery.

9. Jackson Field

Just across the Grand River from the city center is one of the best places in town to catch a thrilling sporting event. At the intimate and atmospheric Jackson Field, spectators can cheer on the Lansing Lugnuts or the Michigan State Spartans who also play the odd game or two here.

Originally called both Oldsmobile Park and then the Cooley Law School Stadium, the minor league ballpark was officially opened back in 1996. One of the most accessible arenas in the country, all its seats and suites offer up fantastic views of the pristine pitch down below.

In between innings of the High-A affiliate of the Oakland Athletics, both fun pitchside activities and entertainment keep the crowd hyped up and ready for more action.

8. Michigan State University

One of the prettiest campuses in the US, Michigan State University boasts a myriad of attractive old buildings and leafy outdoor spaces. At the Big Ten school, visitors can stroll about its sprawling site and stop by some of its excellent museums.

Founded in 1855, the highly-rated university’s historic colleges and residence halls cover a massive part of East Lansing. While some paths take you alongside the Red Cedar River, others pass through fine landscaped gardens or beneath the soaring Beaumont Tower.

On top of seeing a play or concert at the Wharton Center for Performing Arts, you can always check out the outstanding Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum. It is also well worth watching the successful Spartans play if you can as 70,000 fervent football fans pack out their stadium each game day.

7. River Trail

A wonderful way to see yet more of the city and its surroundings is to walk, run, jog or cycle along the scenic River Trail. As well as taking you past some stunning nature spots and parks, it connects up numerous neighborhoods and tourist attractions.

Stretching thirteen miles in length, the multipurpose path winds its way alongside both Grand River and the Red Cedar River. While the first two sections traverse downtown and the Museum District, others are much calmer and quieter as they mostly pass through woodlands and wetlands.

Along the way from Old Town to Potter Park Zoo, you can stop off for a picnic or grab a kayak and explore both rivers by water. The Michigan State University campus also lies along the route as do the Impression 5 Science Center and R.E. Olds Transportation Museum.

6. Impression 5 Science Center

With 150 hands-on exhibits and activities crammed across its two floors, the incredible Impression 5 Science Center is certain to delight young and old alike. Set right in the city center, its exciting yet educational experiments encourage you to explore the natural world using each of your five senses.

Now located in what was once an old wagon works factory, its enthralling exhibits cover everything from light and motion to engineering, human anatomy and the atmosphere. Kids can play and build til their heart’s content as they learn about various scientific principles and delve into outer space.

In addition to all the role-playing and problem-solving, they can also create colorful art pieces and channel water at the museum’s fun FLOW exhibit. The superb science center also puts on countless summer classes and camps for children each year.

5. R.E. Olds Transportation Museum

Right next door is another of Lansing’s top tourist attractions and cultural institutions: the R.E. Olds Transportation Museum . Overlooking the Grand River, its sparkling showrooms display thousands of amazing old artifacts and automobiles that date all the way back to 1886.

Now one of the top-rated automotive museums in the United States, it was established in 1981 and is named for Ransom E. Olds – the founder of both the Oldsmobile and REO car companies. While vintage makes and models of both manufacturers make up the bulk of its huge collection, other rare vehicles and interesting automobilia also feature.

Exhibits on the origins and evolution of the automobile industry are also dotted about next to early traffic signs, engines and antique bicycles. The highlight though is of course its classic Oldsmobiles which make for fabulous photos and viewing beneath the bright showroom lights.

4. Old Town

Both the cultural and creative heart of the city, Old Town lies on the northern side of Lansing at one end of the River Trail. Its pretty historic streets and buildings house countless local businesses with cozy cafes and cute restaurants on show wherever you look.

Founded in the mid-nineteenth century, the area initially flourished thanks to all its commercial and industrial businesses before suffering a slump around a century later. In recent years, it has regained its oomph as unique boutiques and cool bars have opened up next to eclectic art galleries and other creative concepts.

Aside from strolling around and taking in its lively yet laidback ambiance, you can also enjoy some of the fantastic festivals it hosts each year. These include the Lansing JazzFest and Scrapfest which sees artists create striking sculptures out of scrap metal.

3. Potter Park Zoo

Long a firm favorite with families, Potter Park Zoo is home to an impressive collection of animals, birds and reptiles from all around the world. Its spacious enclosures and exhibits lie beside the Red Cedar River, some ten minutes’ drive southeast of the center.

The oldest public zoo in all of Michigan, it first opened in 1915 with the zoo now boasting over 500 animals of more than 160 species. While wandering about, guests can therefore see everything from black rhinos and red pandas to Siberian tigers and snow leopards.

Although known for its endangered and exotic species, the zoo also has both a barnyard and aviary where you interact with parakeets and stroke pigs, rabbits and goats. Scattered about are informative plaques that explain more about the animals and their native habitats.

2. Michigan History Center

For those interested in learning more about the state’s fascinating past, the Michigan History Center is an absolute must. Across its five floors, you’ll find an endless number of artifacts and exhibits that shine a light on the peoples, places and events that have shaped the history of the Great Lake State.

What started out in 1828 as just a tiny territorial library has since morphed into the massive modern center we see before us today. While one half houses the Library of Michigan, the other is dedicated to unraveling the state’s rich history, culture and nature.

Its well-done displays and dioramas cover local Native American tribes and early European settlers with others focusing on topics such as the Civil War and Underground Railroad. Michigan’s mining past and automobile manufacturing industry are also covered through artworks, historic photos and shiny car collections.

1. Michigan State Capitol

Undoubtedly the city’s standout symbol and sight, the Michigan State Capitol’s cast-iron dome rises up dramatically above the rest of downtown. As well as exhibiting some extraordinary architecture, it has terrific tours for you to take around its equally attractive interior.

Since its completion in 1879, the grand capitol building has served as the state’s seat of government. Its defining feature is of course its delightful dome which towers 267 feet in height and lies above a fabulous four-story facade.

While touring around its cavernous chambers and halls, your expert guide will point out some of its fine features and teach you more about the building and state’s governors. 9-11-2001 Remembrance Memorial

The three sides of the memorial represent New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia, the states that were directly impacted by the tragedy. The fourth side contains a dedication statement from the Lansing community. The monument was dedicated on September 11 th , 2002, and it sits at the edge of Wentworth Park along the Grand River.

Beaumont Tower

The first 10 bells were installed in 1928, another 13 bells were added in 1935, and subsequent bells were added up until 1996. During the MSU Summer Carillon Series, visitors can hear all sorts of songs from local carillonneurs as well as guest performers. The concerts are open to the public for free.

A family favorite is the Belle Isle Aquarium, the country's oldest aquarium . It is housed in a historic 1904 building with a stunning green opalite vaulted ceiling, and aquarium residents include favorites like pufferfish and clown fish, turtles, seahorses, and even poison frogs.

The Anna Scrips Whitcomb Conservatory is another popular attraction, occupying 13 acres alongside the Lilu Pond and the formal gardens. It is one of the oldest conservatories in the country, and includes the Show House, Palm House, Cactus House, Tropical House, and a sunken Fernery.

Michilimackinac, located in Mackinaw City, was a French fur-trading village and military outpost that operated from 1715 until 1781, when it was almost entirely destroyed by fire. Also known as Fort Mackinac, the site is now home to 14 fully restored and authentically furnished buildings, one of which is the oldest in Michigan.

Presented as a living history museum, the attraction offers plenty of things to do. Costumed interpreters work and go about their day as they would have in 1775, from farming and cooking chores to musket and marching drills. Highlights include the Soldiers Barracks housing an exhibit on the island's history, the Post Hospital with descriptions of medical treatment during the fort's operation, and the Post Guardhouse that explores the era's military justice system.

Visitors may explore freely or choose a guided tour, and there is a children's area dedicated to engaging younger historians in learning about 18th-century life.

Located within Palms Brook State Park in Michigan's Central Upper Peninsula , Kitch-iti-Kipi is a unique freshwater spring that is fed 10,000 gallons of water every minute. Referred to as the "Mirror of Heaven" by the native Chippewa, the water here is a stunning blue-green and crystal clear, allowing visitors to see far into its depths. The temperature of the spring is always 45 degrees Fahrenheit, so even in the middle of a Michigan winter, the water remains unfrozen.

Tourists can board a wheelchair-accessible covered observation craft, which has an open center, allowing unobstructed views of the aquatic life below. Because the spring water emerges from fissures in the limestone below, the millennia-old tree trunks and branches that line the bottom are encrusted in lime, creating an almost alien landscape.

Palms Brook State Park offers a concession area with picnic tables and public-use grills, as well as restrooms. Indian Lake State Park is nearby, bordering Lake Michigan . It has a campground, hiking trails, a boat launch, and a beach, as well as additional picnic shelters and restrooms.

One of the most pictureque places in Michigan , Windmill Island is a 36-acre heritage park filled with manicured flower gardens and Dutch architecture. In May, the park comes to life with 175,000 tulips, and in June the extensive gardens change to annual flowers.

Highlights include an authentic Dutch windmill, DeZwaan, dating to the 1760s and brought from the Netherlands in 1964. Standing 125 feet, the windmill is a symbol of the Dutch heritage of this area and is the only original Dutch windmill exported to America. It is still a working windmill producing stone ground flour for sale.

Holland is also home to the Outdoor Discovery Center of Wildlife Unlimited , which has taken on the task of restoring agricultural land to natural habitat. As a result of their efforts, there are now six distinct ecosystems on this 130-acre nature preserve. Highlights include walking trails and wildlife viewing opportunities.

Open seasonally from May 1 through October 31, this museum is full of artifacts from historic wrecks of Lake Superior's "Shipwreck Coast," an 80-mile section of dangerous shoreline that claimed numerous lives. The wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald is among its most famous victims, and the museum displays its recovered bell.

Museum admission includes the Whitefish Point Light Tower , which is Lake Superior's oldest continually operating lighthouse. Visitors can also tour the Lightkeepers Quarters , built in 1861, which has been fully restored, as well as the 1923 Surfboat House . There is also a barrier-free boardwalk that allows access to the fragile dunes of Whitefish Point .

The 2024 Community Sustainability Undergraduate Honors Award winners were celebrated in a ceremony on April 27th prior to College of Agriculture and Natural Resources Commencement. These awardees are those students who have distinguished themselves in leadership, scholarship, and service during their undergraduate careers.

Awards are listed in alphabetical order by major (Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources Education; Environmental Studies and Sustainability; Sustainable Parks, Recreation, and Tourism).

Outstanding Senior Leadership   Award in Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources Education

Recipient: Zoey Zupin

About Zoey: Zoey is a senior majoring in Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources Education with a minor in Biology. Zoey is a leader in AFNR Education here at MSU. In addition to serving in leadership roles in the AFNRE Club and her Sorority, Zoey has also demonstrated her ability to connect with a variety of people while engaging in class discussions and leading professional development for Michigan AFNR teachers. We look forward to seeing her positivity and adaptability shine as she completes her student teaching internship at Chesaning High School.

Recipient: Maezie Nettleton

About Maezie: Maezie is a senior majoring in Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources Education and minoring in Educational Studies, Environmental and Sustainability Studies, and Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems. Maezie is a critical thinker with a vibrant personality. Maezie came to the program with little to no experience in AFNR Education, but that has not stopped them from asking questions that support both their and their classmate’s understanding of the discipline. Maezie thinks critically about educational systems and thrives in communicating their ideas in a way that stimulates engaging discussion. Post-graduation Maezie will explore other opportunities to create diverse and meaningful educational experiences for students in nature.

Recipient: Abby Marie VanDyk

About Abby: Abby is a senior majoring in Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources Education and minors in Agribusiness and Environmental and Sustainability Studies . Abby joined this cohort later in her degree program, but we are glad she found her way to us. She has dived into AFNR Education with a curiosity and willingness to help others that has created many opportunities for her to learn and grow through service. Through her observations and other opportunities, Abby has helped prepare students for contests, evaluated student proficiency reports, and has served as a judge and facilitator at state and local-level FFA events. She has also become quite active with Marshall High School’s AFNR program, where she will be conducting her student teaching internship next year.

Leadership in Environmental Studies and Sustainability Award

Recipient: Luke Hurley

About Luke: Luke is an ESS major who is earning a double degree in Geographic Information Science. Luke has maintained a 3.58 GPA as a student, all while being involved in numerous activities on campus. In addition to Luke’s academic success, he has participated in Singing Spartans and has held leadership roles in the organization including Treasurer and President. Luke has also been a Floriculture Research assistant, an intern with The Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy or EGLE working with the Water Infrastructure Funding and Financing Section. As a Junior, Luke collaborated with a few other amazing students and started the student organization of Environmental Studies and Sustainability United or ESSU.  Through this group, Luke was chosen as President and has evolved ESSU into an incredibly successful group that works providing professional and philanthropic opportunities for students.  Luke also serves as the Undergraduate Student Representative on the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources Teaching and Academic Policy Committee and is a Resident Assistant in Brody Neighborhood. He will be continuing his work with EGLE to start his professional career.

Environmental Studies and Sustainability Scholarship Award

Recipient: Susan Toppen

About Susan: Susan is part of the Honors College and is majoring in ESS along with a Minors in Environmental Economics and Geographic Information Science, all while maintaining a 3.96 GPA as a student at MSU. Susan has been involved with various projects, including assisting Drs. Bessette and Perry researching decommissioned oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico that have been repurposed into artificial reefs. Additionally, she has been a Student Research Assistant focusing on literary research for the Department of Plant, Soil and Microbial Sciences, an Intern for the MSU Extension Natural Resources Work Team, and an undergraduate fellow in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Susan is also the Treasurer for the Environmental Studies and Sustainability United club. After graduation Susan is looking to continue her work professionally focusing on sustainability and the environment.

Environmental Studies and Sustainability Service Award

Recipient: Natali Gonzalez

About Natali: Natali most recently worked as a Research Assistant, in the Plant Resilience Institute of Michigan State University where they study dynamic lipid droplets of plant plastids called plastoglobules. Natali has also worked as a Research Technician, with the Li Lab in the Millersburg Michigan USGS Hammond Biological Station, where she primarily focused on sea lamprey pheromone communication. Natali has also attended first as a participant and then as a Site Leader for the International Engagement in Mexico Education Abroad program.  In addition to these experiences, Natali is the President of MANRRS, which is and engaging organization to promote academic and professional advancement by empowering those historically excluded in agriculture, natural resources, and related sciences.  Natali has been accepted into the PhD Crop and Soil Science Program here at MSU, so will be continuing her education as a Spartan.

Sustainable Parks, Recreation and Tourism- Carl Dressel Park Management Award

Recipient: Aubrey Everett

About Aubrey: Aubrey is a senior majoring in Sustainable Parks, Recreation, and Tourism and minoring in Conservation, Recreation, and Environmental Enforcement. Aubrey completed her internship this past summer at Crystal Mountain Resort in Thompsonville, Michigan where she was part of team focused on recreational tourism and user experiences. As part of her internship, Aubrey also developed a tourism accessibility trail plan for the Crystal Mountain Resort to implement to provide equitable and inclusive opportunities to all guests of Crystal Mountain. Aubrey looks forward to working for the Michigan DNR as a Conservation Officer or pursuing a career in law enforcement. Aubrey wants to work in a career where she can educate the public about the importance of our fisheries and wildlife as a public trust.

Sustainable Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Scholarship Award

Recipient: Emily Sinclair

About Emily: Emily is a senior majoring in Sustainable Parks, Recreation and Tourism. Emily is one of the few who has maintained a 4.0 GPA through her academic career at MSU. Additionally, Emily completed a professional internship at P.J. Hoffmaster State Park for the Michigan Department of Natural Resources where she led interpretive programming and updated the visitor centers’ exhibits to be more engaging and relevant to visitors. Emily looks forward to working for the Michigan DNR as a Park Ranger in the Wildlife Division, or as a seasonal worker in a Michigan State Parks system while exploring career options. Emily wants a life working in the outdoors to both maintain a connection and sustain our Michigan heritage and amazing natural resources.

Sustainable Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Carl Dressel Park Management Award

Recipient: Joshua Doyle

About Joshua: Josh is a driven and passionate individual. In addition to pursuing his bachelor’s degree, he worked full-time in the parks profession, while also engaging in research in the Parks Connections Lab here at MSU. Josh presented some of his research at the University Undergraduate Research and Arts Forum earlier this month. Additionally, Josh contributed substantially to projects examining diverse public uses and users of MDNR-Wildlife properties, crowdsourcing information on national parks, the social impacts of e-bikes, and trail sustainability and recreation displacement in national forests from Michigan to California. Upon graduation, Josh plans to attend graduate school to obtain either a Sustainable Tourism and Protected Area Management or a Landscape Architecture degree with a goal to work as a regional park planner. His career goal is to be on a team that shares his driven values while working with the community collaboratively and creatively. As a short-term goal, Josh aims to visit every national park in the US.
