Located in the heart of downtown Los Angeles, California and home to the NBA’s Los Angeles Clippers and Los Angeles Lakers , the NHL’s Los Angeles Kings and the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks , Crypto.com Arena has been the premier sporting and event venue in the region for more than two decades. Focusing on the fan experience, Crypto.com Arena offers spectacular sightlines, excellent food and drink options as well as VIP seating in a technologically advanced stadium.

The center, however, is just one element of the sports and entertainment hub of downtown Los Angeles, a development known as L.A. Live. The Microsoft Theater (formerly the Nokia Theater) is the permanent home of the Primetime Emmy Awards and other ceremonies, and will be the weightlifting venue for the 2028 Summer Olympics. ESPN’s West Coast operations also operate from L.A. Live, airing late-night broadcasts of SportsCenter. The Grammy Museum is another fine attraction at L.A. Live, highlighting the legacy of music’s premier awards ceremony right next to its permanent venue.

Crypto.com Arena History

Originally named STAPLES Center until December 2021, Crypto.com Arena focuses on providing fans with a premium experience, offering free WiFi, 840 flat-screen TVs, 675 speakers outside the seating area, and a $10 million 4HD scoreboard. Five different concourses throughout the stadium feature multiple restaurants, 23 refreshment stands, the TEAM LA store and an outdoor dining experience with views of downtown Los Angeles. A 2022 multi-million dollar renovation is currently being completed to Crypto.com Arena and will include new LED screens, a ribbon board, upgrades to dining areas and locker rooms, as well as an outdoor plaza to connect the surrounding area, known as L.A. LIVE, to Crypto.com Arena.

The Crypto.com Arena had the task of replacing two legendary local arenas – the Fabulous Forum in Inglewood, and the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena in the University Park section of Los Angeles – and has succeeded beyond expectations for over two decades of operation.

Thousands of world-renowned events and sporting events have called Crypto.com Arena their home. Crypto.com Arena has hosted sporting events such as the 2004, 2011 and 2018 NBA All-Star Weekends, 2002 and 2017 NHL All-Star Games, professional figure skating events, UFC and boxing events, 11 X Games and the 2013 and 2018 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship West Division. Non-sporting events that have been at Crypto.com Arena include Disney on Ice, over 20 Grammy Awards ceremonies, the first-ever Latin Grammy Awards, Walking with Dinosaurs, and concerts by Janet Jackson, Phil Collins, Taylor Swift, Adele, U2, Usher, Paul McCartney, Britney Spears, Eric Clapton, Billy Joel, Cher, Mariah Carey and many more.

Parking and Admission at Crypto.com Arena

Crypto.com Arena has 3,000 on-site parking spaces along with seven parking lots surrounding the stadium, which include Lot 1, Lot SW VIP, Lot C, Lot 9, Lot W, Lot E and Lot 4. Parking prices at Crypto.com Arena vary depending on the event and can cost anywhere from $10 to $75. There are also 10,000 more parking spaces within a seven-to-10-minute walk of the stadium that are privately owned and operated.

Crypto.com Arena has a strict no bag policy in the venue. Bags, backpacks, purses, totes, clear bags, fanny packs and camera bags are not permitted inside Crypto.com Arena. Small clutches and wallets that are no larger than 5″ X 9″ X 1″ are permitted and will be thoroughly inspected. Other prohibited items at Crypto.com Arena include, but are not limited to, weapons of any kind, laser pointers, glow sticks, flashlights, fireworks, outside food and beverages, professional photography equipment, selfie sticks, tablets, laptops, GoPros and other audio/video recording devices.

Crypto.com Arena Capacity & Seating Options

Crypto.com Arena has a seating capacity of 19,067 for basketball games, 18,340 for hockey games and nearly 20,000 for concerts and other special events. Along with thousands of general seating options, Crypto.com Arena has dozens of VIP seating options for fans to choose from, including private suites for members and single-night rentals, Premier Seat and Premier Table & Lounge Memberships, Hyde Society Memberships, as well as the flexible Premium Event Membership. Premier Memberships have access to ­­a VIP entrance, preferred parking, in-suite/seat food and beverage options and includes access to most events at Crypto.com Arena. Premium Event Memberships offer members flexibility to the top games of the season, a private suite, and an overall VIP fan experience. Hyde Society Memberships offer members ability to hand-pick their events and offer access to suite-level seating, private rooms that can accommodate two to 200 people and full catering options. Private suite options are also available for multi-night or single-night rentals. These suites include a VIP entrance, a private suite and in-suite catering options. ­

We parked at the Courtyard Marriott for our concert. They took forever to get our car after (valet). My advice is to park across the street from there on Francisco for half the price and drive right on out.

Home to the Los Angeles Kings , Los Angeles Lakers , and the Los Angeles Clippers since 1999. The stadium became a home to the Los Angeles Sparks in 2001. Crypto.com Arena (formerly Staples Center) is located on South Figueroa Street in Los Angeles , California. The Los Angeles Convention Center is also located on the same street. It is practically next door to Crypto.com Arena.

The Stadium has hosted 9 championship games between 2001 and 2014. The champion games were for both NHL and the NBA.

“The Deal That Almost Wasn’t”

The stadium’s construction plans were long debated between city officials and the real estate team. After months of negotiates the two parties came to an agreement and the construction team broke ground in 1998.

The stadium was updated in 2010 to accommodate the home teams. A locker room was installed for the Kings, Lakers, and Clippers. The scoreboard was also updated to 4HD as it had not been updated since the building’s establishment in 1999.

Again, being in downtown Los Angeles means plenty of food choices nearby the Staples Center.

For a quick bite to eat, there are multiple Subways near the stadium, as well as Chipotle and Panda Express.

There are a number of franchise chain restaurants to check out nearby like Wolfgang Puck and The Yard House Sports Bar.

For fine dining, both Fleming’s and the Palm are two high-end steakhouses only a few blocks away from The Staples Center.

Aventura llegó a Los Ángeles ‘Cerrando Ciclos’, pero abriendo los corazones de los que se niegan a que ésta sí sea la última vuelta

El Crypto.com Arena recibió a casa llena a los ‘Reyes de la Bachata’ con dos noches para la historia

Aunque la gira lleva por nombre “Cerrando Ciclos”, el grupo Aventura está apenas abriendo el ciclo de este recorrido por los Estados Unidos. La apertura se hizo en la capital del estado California, Sacramento con un ‘sold out’, pero el verdadero inicio triunfal de la banda comenzó este 4 y 5 de mayo en la ciudad de Los Ángeles y, por supuesto, también a casa llena.

La última vez que vimos a Aventura en el escenario más emblemático del centro angelino se llamaba Staples Center y fue el 15 de diciembre de 2009. Lo recuerdo como si fuera ayer, porque ese día celebraba con unos amigos y colegas mi cumpleaños número 40 al ritmo de la bachata del grupo Aventura.

En esa oportunidad, Romeo, Lenny, Max y Henry Santos estaban recorriendo la Unión Americana con la gira “The Last Tour”, tras haberla iniciado y continuado por escenarios de Latinoamérica con actuaciones en Colombia, República Dominicana, Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay Argentina, México, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Puertos Rico y las ciudades más importantes de los Estados Unidos.

Al concluir ese tour que supuestamente sería el último que harían como grupo, la fanaticada tuvo que vivir con ese trago amargo por un buen tiempo. Los “Reyes de la Bachata” ya no harían una gira juntos. Sin embargo, Romeo continuó adelante con su proyecto en solitario, mientras sus primos se dedicaron a emprender sus propios proyectos en la música hasta que en septiembre del 2021, Los Ángeles tuvo la oportunidad de volverlos a ver reunidos en un escenario durante la gira ‘Inmortal”. Pero no en un escenario cualquiera, sino el imponente Dodgers Stadium donde tuvieron como invitada sorpresa a Karol G, cuando la artista colombiana ni siquiera soñaba con presentarse en solitario en un estadio. Miren lo que ha logrado hoy en día “La bichota”.

Ahora los “Beatles” dominicanos decidiero iniciar lo que podría ser el principio del fin, es decir, el verdadero último recorrido como Aventura, para completar la vuelta de 360 grados y de esa manera estar “Cerrando Ciclos” por los Estados Unidos.

Durante el anuncio de esta gira del grupo Aventura, la banda prometió ofrecer una experiencia inolvidable para sus fieles seguidores y como las promesa se deben cumplir, así lo comenzaron a hacer en Sacramento y luego durante dos noches en el ahora llamado Crypto.com Arena (antes Staples Center).

La gira que recorrerá diversas ciudades con 57 fechas totalmente vendidas en los Estados Unidos, ha prometido llevar la música que ha marcado los corazones fieles, pero también la de los infieles que aman y se identifican con el estilo que, hasta la fecha, muchos intentaron copiar, pero que ninguno logró igualar. Los amantes de la bachata no se dejaron llevar por aquellos que quisieron imitar a sus idolos, pero si somos sinceros, no se trató de un intento de derrocarlos con populares duetos o solistas bachateros, sino que estos grupos fueron el resultado de una inspiración que les llegó en su intento de llenar vacíos tras los diversos capítulos de separación de Aventura.

Cerrar un capítulo como grupo es la idea de esta gira, pero sus fans no están de acuerdo ni preparados y eso lo pudimos sentir, vivir y palpar la noche del sábado 4 de mayo en el coloso del Downtown, donde miles de personas llegaron para cantar “por última vez” al lado del grupo Aventura que llegaba para ofrecerle a los fanáticos una oportunidad única de revivir los éxitos que definieron una época en la música latina y que nació en Nueva York, con raíces fuertes de la bachata tradicional de la República Dominicana, las influencias del R&B y otros géneros que se fueron funcionando, incluso el urbano tradicional. Hasta la fecha leva puesta muy bien la corona como Reyes de la bachata moderna y de siempre.

Aunque “Cerrando ciclos” ya tiene fechas por Europa y Puerto Rico, en nuestra área Los Ángeles ha tenido el privilegio de contar con dos conciertos de la mano de CMN Events en este inicio de gira y otros dos más el Toyota Arena de Ontario este 7 y 8 de mayo.

El repertorio incluye más de 30 canciones, algunas totalmente completas y otras que son mezcladas para darle cabida a casi todos los grandes éxitos de la agrupación que se creó en 1993 en el Bronx, Nueva York, en el año 1993 por Anthony “Romeo” Santos (productor, cantante y compositor principal) y sus familiares Lenny Santos (productor musical, arreglista y guitarrista), Max Santos (bajista y rapero) y Henry Santos Jeter (cantante y compositor).

No cabe duda que “Cerrando ciclos” es una gira que destapa el baúl de los recuerdos y pone a suspirar a los amantes de este género en cada rincón donde suena su propuesta musical y ahora Los Ángeles ya vivió la experiencia del reencuentro.

‘Méxicoooo’ y también El Salvador en la casa Una de las grandes constantes en los conciertos de Aventura es que su vocalista Anthony ‘Romeo” Santos nombra los países latinoamericanos durante su actuación como una manera hacer sentir en casa a los inmigrantes que se encuentran en una plaza determinada. Y cada vez que viene a Los Ángeles, el grito a todo pulmón es por México, sin embargo la noche del sábado, el grito de “El Salvador” tuvo que hacerlo dos veces al percatarse que la arena del Crypto.com se estremeció más de lo normal cuando nombró el país centroamericano, hasta el punto de casi igualar los decibeles que generaron los gritos de los mexicanos. Fue muy emocionante para los salvadoreños presentes y para el mismo artista que lo celebró desde el escenario.

Con la mayoría de fans entre mexicanos y salvadoreños, pero también de Guatemala, Honduras y países de Suramericana, pero muy pocos del Caribe, la velada se inició a las 9:00pm en punto, ni un minuto antes ni un minuto después. A esa hora se apagaron las luces para dejar ver en la pantalla del centro un video en el que los protagonistas salen hablando de la última gira del grupo, hasta que la introducción de una llave en la ranura abre el cofre, que les da entrada a los integrantes de la banda musical y al tren delantero del grupo, los cuatro primos que llevan el apellido Santos, pero que de Santos… no mucho.

“Por un segundo” abrió el cofre en este reencuentro con los angelinos, mientras los gritos y las ovaciones le dieron permiso a Romeo para compartir sus atrevidos movimientos de cadera que destacaban debajo de su vestimenta formal en tono beige finas rayas, mientras que Lenny rasgbaa con fuerza su guitarra, Max lo hacía con su bajo y Henry secundaba en los coros.

La gente los recibió de pie, incluso aquellos que se encuontraban en el tercer nivel del recinto, donde los integrantes apenas se pueden ven, pero igual lo disfrutaban como si estuvieran en la primera fila gracias a las tres enormes pantallas del escenario.

“Mi niña cambió” y “El Desprecio” con vistas de paisajes verdes y lluvia, continúan en el repertorio de apertura. “La boda”, con imágenes de cientos de velas encendidas en la pantalla, generaron gritos que se intensificaron más cuando Romeo les preguntó “¿Dónde están los latinos?”, seguido de los nombres de los países de los presentes en la casa de los Lakers.

“Los infieles” (con la imagen de la fachada de un hotel) y Lenny poniendo a gritar a muchas con el sonido de su guitarra, le dieron paso a Henry para que iniciara una competencia de gritos entre al este y oeste del recinto, al final hubo un empate por el Crypto.com Arena en plena se mostraba eufórico.

“Buenas noches Los Ángeles”, dijo Romeo. “Aquí se viene a gozar, pero también se puede recordar y llorar”, agregó antes de interpretar junto a cientos de seguidores el éxito “Llorar”.

Así fueron cayendo “Dile al amor”, “Angelito” y “Enséñame a olvidar”. Por supuesto, no faltó la interacción con el público de las primeras filas, indagando sobre el tiempo que llevaban juntos algunas parejas. Por ahí apareció una que le dijo que llevaban juntos 10 años y les pidió que se dieron un beso y les terminó diciendo “Escucha las palabras…” y el público a viva voz le correspondió con un sonoro “...de Romeo”.

“Te invito”, “9:15” y “Todavía me amas” también fueron cayendo hasta que Henry tomó el protagonismo para interpretar el nuevo tema “Brindo con agua”, el cual lanzaron hace un mes. “Henry soy todo oídos” le dijo Romeo, mientras el público se mostraba atento a la letra que comenzaba agradeciendo a su primo Romeo “por escuchar” y entender qué es lo que ha generado en su vida “los problemas que ha creado por estar de machista” y su mujer lo ha dejado, sumiéndose en el alcohol como un loco por las dudas que lo envuelven. Sin duda, un tema que ayuda a la reflexión para aquellos que se dejan llevar por el mal camino.

Con un cambio de vestuario, Romeo aparece vestido con una camisa holgada de color verde y pantalón amarillo, para hablarle especialmente a las mujeres, a quienes les recuerda que hay 3 tipos de hombres en sus vida. Y que que uno que las dejan marcadas. “¿Saben a quién me refiero”, les preguntó y la respuesta al unísono fue “El Malo”, título de uno de los grandes éxitos de la banda que todas cantaron junto a Romeo a viva voz.

“El perdedor”, “Mi corazoncito”, “Su veneno” y “Solo con un beso” pusieron a todos a cantar, mientras que “Mujeriego”, un merengue ripiao, muy dominicano, dejó a los presentes fuera de base porque los angelinos no están acostumbrados a este ritmo tan caribeño, muy diferente al público de Nueva York donde este género a ritmo de la tambora pone a todos a bailar.

Romeo les pidió que levantaran las manos mientras los músicos seguían tocando para permitirles bajar del escenario.

Al finalizar de sonar el merengue típico de la tarima principal, los cuatro emergieron sobre un pequeño escenario al otro extremo del recinto. Todos aparecieron sentados sobre un cofre de madera y sobre ellos una esfera semejante al planeta Tierra y comenzaron a ofrecer canciones a la carta, al menos breves estrofas de las mismas, pero no lo hicieron solos, sino acompañados de algunos fans que subieron al escenario. El primero fue Guillermo, de Guatemala. “Quisiera cantar con ustedes”, les dijo emocionado, pero pobre, no fue nada bien en la entonación.

Algo parecido sucedió con Natalie, una jovencita bastante rellenita que les costó mucho sentarse sobre el cofre, incluso Romeo la levantó como pudo y le regaló unos sexies movimientos de cadera, pero Natalie pidió cantar junto a ellos el tema ‘Ella y yo”, el mismo que Aventura interpretaba con Don Omar. Intento apenas duró unos segundos.

Durante el regreso al escenario principal, la pantalla principal mostró video antiguos donde mostraban a los integrantes de la banda en sus inicios y todos hablaban de sus influencias musicales que con la letra de “Anthony” y la bachata tradicional lograron imponer un estilo… El video culminó de manera abrupta y los chicos ya estaban de vuelta a la tarima.

Las siguientes canciones en el repertorio incluyeron “La tormenta” y “Cuando volveras”, además de otros clásicos de la banda que de acuerdo al mismo Romeo, podrían ir variando en las diferentes plazas donde se presentarán durante toda la gira.

“¿Seguimos o nós vamos?”, “¿Tienen que trabajar mañana?”, preguntó Romeo y ambas respuestas fueron un “no” rotundo.

“Todos los que tengan un celular, allá arriba, enciendan los celulares”, les dijo y el público iluminó el recinto para despedir a la banda en su interpretación, pero esta vez a ritmo de reggaetón con ‘Volví”, la colaboración que hizo Aventura con Bad Bunny hace un par de años. La energía fue absoluta y el público comenzó a perrear desde el nivel del piso hasta los asientos del tercer nivel. Y cuando la adrenalina estaba por la nubes, los chicos se despidieron y regresaron al baúl para descender.

El público pedía otra con las linternas de los celulares encendidas y luego de un par de minutos regresaron vestidos de negro, mientras Romeo usaba un pañuelo en la cabeza para despedirse con el tema que los dio a conocer en la escena musical “Obsesión”, el mismo que compartieron en el 2021 con Karol G en el Dodger Stadium.

Esta vez no hubo invitados especiales en la primera noche del Crypto.com Arena, pero sí unas enormes ganas de que no se fueran, pero habrá que esperar porque luego que se cierran ciclos, se abren otros y quizás pueda ser que los vuelvan a ver juntos en un nuevo ciclo. El tiempo lo dirá.

From celebrities to diehards, how NY Knicks fans sitting courtside are rocking The Garden

As a fan, there's nothing quite like attending a professional sporting event.

Whether it's being one of 82,500 at a sold-out Giants or Jets game at MetLife Stadium on a Sunday in the fall, or in attendance for a win-or-go-home Game 7 in the MLB, NBA or NHL playoffs, there are plenty of unique opportunities for tri-state area fans to experience throughout the year.

However, there's one that stands out from the rest − Madison Square Garden.

As the New York Knicks' second-round NBA playoffs matchup against the Indiana Pacers begins, it's time reflect on the impact "The world's most famous arena" has, especially when it comes to the postseason.

The atmosphere at MSG is unlike any other, especially at a time right now where both the Rangers and Knicks have advanced in their respective playoffs.

While there's no denying the raucousness during Rangers' home games this postseason, it's been on another level when the ice switches to hardwood and the Knicks are in action.

Knicks fans blending in with players

Whether it's countless No. 11 Jalen Brunson jerseys or throwbacks to Patrick Ewing and John Starks apparel from the 1990s, it's clear that fans are representing the new and old Knicks style in fashion.

Even just from tuning in to the games on TV, it's evident the atmosphere inside The Garden is on a different level than any other NBA arena.

With fans' non-stop chanting of "Defense!" for the league's best unit for nearly all four quarters, it makes it nearly impossible for the opposing team to stay in rhythm throughout the game's 48 minutes.

This even includes Knicks players high-fiving and embracing celebrities like Spike Lee and the fans sitting (and sometimes standing) courtside on certain plays throughout games this postseason.

The Philadelphia 76ers learned what type of an effect a crowd like the one at MSG can have in the first round, when the Knicks erased a five-point deficit in 47 seconds to steal Game 2, 104-101, and take a 2-0 series lead.

NBA fans are right on top of the court

What separates NBA games is how close the fans are to the court. In other sports, you're either separated by netting, elevated seating or glass barrier.

At MSG, Knicks fans are known for getting rowdy early and often and letting opposing players know how they feel when they're just a few feet away from the athletes and the action.

Prior to the Knicks-Sixers first round series, Philadelphia's Kelly Oubre voiced his opinion on the well-known celebrity row at Madison Square Garden.

“They’re gonna give celebrities those $100,000 [worth of] free tickets just to be there and not care about the game,” Oubre said. “That’s what they do.”

Speaking of celebrity row, it's evident that there's no other arena quite like MSG when it comes to well-known personalities being in attendance.

Yes, you could argue that the former Staples Center − now named Crypto.com Arena, home of the Los Angeles Lakers and Clippers − have the same star-power of those at Knicks' games.

However, it's clear that celebrities that do attend feel as if they're more passionate and are actual fans of the team instead of just there to see a basketball game.

In fact, 'The Sopranos' star Steve Schirripa, well known for going to a majority of Knicks and Rangers games at MSG, including this postseason, responded to Oubre's comments heading into the first-round series.

“I don’t know who he’s talking about. The guys in the front row, they care. Tracy Morgan, a huge fan. Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, myself, Matthew Modine, John McEnroe, Fat Joe, all fans. They probably know more about basketball than him, believe it or not," Schirripa said.

As it's been seen in the past, not all interactions with fans close to the hardwood are good-natured.

This was a case in point in the NBA first-round series between the Pacers and Milwaukee Bucks.

With Milwaukee minutes away from elimination in Game 6, Bucks guard Patrick Beverley tossed a ball multiple times at Pacers fans standing behind his team's bench.

It's being reported that what caused Beverley to react in this matter was those right behind the Milwaukee players saying "Cancun... Cancun on 3" to the veteran point guard.

Beverley will likely face a suspension to start next season.

Even though the taunt was minor and not personal toward the players, it's always a reminder that players are human beings too and may react the way Beverley did if provoked.

NY Knicks courtside ticket prices

While courtside seats and the options in the same sections are available, they're clearly not attainable for the average fan.

Here were the prices for two courtside tickets and seats nearest to the floor for Monday night's Game 1 between the Knicks and Pacers at Madison Square Garden:

In their first book published in 2016, Koreatown: A Cookbook authors Deuki Hong and Matt Rodbard explored the cuisine of Korean American communities across the U.S. Now, the duo is back with a new book, Koreaworld: A Cookbook , which takes readers on a whirlwind tour of modern Korean cuisine as a global phenomenon, including the streets of Seoul, Jeju Island, and rural provinces in Korea. Koreaworld turns its attention back to the States, with stories of those pushing the boundaries of Korean culture in cities like New York City, Portland, and, of course, Los Angeles.

Hong and Rodbard are throwing a cookbook launch party on Friday, May 3, at the Butcher, the Baker, the Cappuccino Maker in West Hollywood. They’ll be joined by guest chefs from Perilla, Seoul Sausage, and Soban. Tickets on sale for $80 include food from the guest chefs, beer, and cocktails; tickets on sale for $115 come with a signed copy of the book.

Additionally, on Saturday, May 4, Hong and Rodbard are hosting an event at the Chinatown bookstore Now Serving. The event will include a conversation moderated by food writer Esther Tseng, a book signing, and a meet-and-greet. Tickets for the event are $12 and can be applied to anything purchased in the store that day.

Eater sat down with Hong and Rodbard once again to discuss the Korean food scene in LA today — how it compares to Seoul, how it’s changed since their last book, and how it might look in the future.

On comparing the Korean food between Seoul and Los Angeles

Deuki Hong: With the LA vs. Seoul conversation, it comes down to, what is it you really enjoy? They’re really good at different things. In LA, I tend to seek out more of the iconic spots, or Korean barbecue restaurants. To me, Seoul has more homey food. Sometimes, I do feel like things are a little less seasoned there, but Seoul is incredible in its own way. In every corner, you can find so many restaurants that serve really good, comforting meals.

Matt Rodbard: I feel like the modern food scene in Korea is our thesis and what we cover in Koreaworld . Twelve years ago, Seoul was not on LA’s level, and it was pretty clear that Korea was not innovating the way that LA was. But today, we’re seeing modern Korea lead the conversation in many ways, like how barbecue is being presented with smoke instead of grill and trends like dalgona coffee. We’re even seeing Italian food in Seoul being prepared in creative ways. In our book, we explore many of these recipes and stories from Seoul that show that they’re leading the charge. But LA will always have its advantages when it comes to products, like higher quality beef and the robust farming industry in California. Those advantages for LA chefs are apparent.

On the exchange of trends between Los Angeles and Seoul

DH: I do see a lot of movement from Korea to LA, and we cover it in our book. This is the narrative that we saw in Korea. When we spoke to local Koreans, a lot of them were like, “Hey, I want to come to America.” That’s still a very big sentiment there. Even when we were there 10 years ago, a lot of brands and small business owners saw LA as this very shiny place. I do see American brands like Tartine going to Korea, but overall, we see more of a transition from Seoul to America. Like Camel Coffee is opening a location in LA , and I think we’re gonna see more and more Korean brands making their way to LA.

MR: On the flip side, I think you definitely also see Seoul getting a lot of inspiration from America. Five or 10 years ago, fine dining in Seoul was definitely presented more in the French style. Now, you can go to a wine bar in Itaewon or Apgujeong, and you’re seeing levels of service and style that replicate some restaurants in America. A lot of chefs based in Korea are also training in America, and many are going back to Korea and doing cool, more unique, “American” types of service. Much of the exchange between Seoul and LA consists of Seoul taking inspiration when it comes to more casual but polished dining.

On fusion cuisine in Los Angeles

DH: There are so many different definitions, takes, and perspectives on fusion. I think when most people think of fusion, they think fusion of two cultures, right? Like Mexican and Korean, or Korean and Italian. But for me, fusion is when you take Korean flavors or Korean ingredients and incorporate different techniques and methods. We just did a dinner in D.C. with dwaeji galbijjim (Korean braised pork ribs), topped with cheese that was then bruleed on the table. D.C. had never really seen that. But in LA, it’s done at Sun Nong Dan, a very iconic restaurant.

MR: I love the word fusion, and there are definitely restaurants that come to mind in LA that are embracing it. There is Yangban, and they do a tremendous pear avocado banchan. The acidity is really special, and the balance is pronounced. I think what Perilla is doing with its dosirak (lunch boxes) is definitively LA. I also really like what the guys at Seoul Sausage are doing, and they’re in our book. They do excellent charcuterie and sausages. They’re underrated because they focus on business-to-business catering, but they have one of the best restaurants in LA, in my opinion.

On LA’s innovative Korean food

MR: In LA, I feel like innovation is always present. I’ve heard tremendous things about what places like Baroo are doing and how they are bringing something new. But I also feel like LA has tension that isn’t always as evident. An example of this is Ham Ji Park. Their sticky pork ribs may not be innovative in the traditional sense, but that’s where the chefs eat at night and it’s amazing food. They do a great gamjatang (pork neck stew) that has always been a favorite of mine. And I feel like Soban is another great example, if you look at what Deborah is doing with her mom. Deborah is young and innovative but also cares deeply about traditional banchan.

DH: We’re not LA chefs, so we don’t want to say anything authoritative, but I don’t always correlate innovation with modern tasting menus or Michelin stars. I would love to change that narrative a little bit. I love LA because it’s not New York. New York has beautiful staples and many Michelin restaurants where you dress up and go out to dine. Sure, there are restaurants and Korean chefs that are doing that in LA. But I don’t think LA feels the need to doll up or dress up Korean food. LA is like, “Dude, we are LA. What else do we have to say?” It’s kind of like mic drop, enough said. LA doesn’t need to prove itself.

On the changes in LA’s Koreatown since 2016, when their first book was published

DH: It has been a 10-year journey for us since we started writing our last book in 2014. There are a lot of places from 10 years ago that we still go to. My three favorite spots currently are Gilmok (the Corner Place Restaurant), Jinsol Gukbap, and more recently, Borit Gogae. Now, there are new things happening beyond Koreatown, with Baroo being in a swankier Arts District space, and Yangban, a restaurant by two of the most talked-about chefs in the country. These things are welcomed changes.

On Koreatown’s future

DH: I mean this in the best way possible, but I hope it doesn’t change. LA’s Koreatown is so organic and beautiful, and I say this as a Korean American. Forget the chef part. My selfish hope is that there isn’t much change, but there is growth — growth in how the food is talked about and how small businesses are supported. But LA, please don’t change.

MR: I love that sentiment. In terms of this growth, I’ll add that I believe it may expand outside of the traditional Koreatown borders — outside of the Olympic, Wilshire corridor. I think even the South Bay has a scene with growing Korean immigration, and I also think about Downtown, with spots like Yangban and Baroo. But where are the great Korean restaurants in Silver Lake or Echo Park? Perilla is in a little pocket, which is unique. But where are the Korean restaurants in Sherman Oaks or Venice? If I’m going to make a prediction, I think we’ll see Koreatown not be the center of the energy as much. I hope that in 10 years, this cuisine is going to be a lot more common across LA.
