Knowsley safari - A magical light trail in Liverpool

santa knowsley safari park

What I loved about it:

The Santa’s grotto was great and Santa couldn’t have been more friendly and made it any more magical for the kids they loved it.

Suitable for:

Value for money (out of 10):.

A magical enchanted light trail around Knowsley Safari.

Christmas has well and Truly landed at Knowsley Safari park. Looking for A magical light trail in Liverpool? Then look no further. Santa and his Elves along with a bit of Christmas magic have transformed the foot safari. This wonderfully lit up enchanted trailer is perfect for children and their adults to enjoy.

Having been before I was very happy the event was back on again this year. It is great value for money as well as the kids loved it, This is Miles first Christmas event that he has been old enough to appreciate which made it even more Special.

The enchanted trail itself lasts around 45 minutes but there is nothing to say you couldn’t’ t walk around twice. The night time backdrop only accentuates the amazing lights in the woodland. Our only downside was we attended just as storm was setting in so we didn’t stay to long.

You can pay for a ride pass which is £10 per child for unlimited rides. They have rides for all ages here including a carousel ride which is Maisie’s favourite. Entry to the park is any time from 4pm to arrive early for plenty of time to take advantage of the rides and the café onsite.

Want to see Santa while you’re here? It’s £12 for a Family of 6 and you get your picture included. If you want to take your own photos you can do as well. I did try to get a photo of the kids with Santa, however, Mile’s wasn’t a fan of the Jolly bearded man and cried the whole time. But who’s young children didn’t cry the first time they met the big guy.

Overall very happy with the little Grotto and Santa himself, Anybody else a bit of a Santa snob? It sounds superficial of me but there is nothing worse than paying through the nose for a grotto visit to find a Budget Santa in a Grotto decked out with a £10 Poundland decorations budget.

This is my go-to place to visit Santa and it will be for a long time as it’s just magical and offers so much more than just a grotto.

Part of the Foot Safari is the Amur Tiger Trail, which lets you peer into the l argest tiger enclosure in Europe . Its residents are two Amur Tiger sisters Bira and Sinda , and a newly introduced male named Kuzma .

Amur tigers were on the brink of extinction in the 1940s , but conservation efforts pulled their numbers up from around 40 individuals to somewhere between 523 and 540 in 2015. Great news! But they are still at risk. Staff at Knowsley Safari hope that introducing Kuzma will encourage Bira to breed . Fingers crossed they’ll be hearing the pitter patter of tiny tiger cub paws soon. That’ll be roar -some!

The tiger project is just one of the many fantastic conservation project s that Knowsley Safari is supporting. Their work is to protect wildlife around the world for future generations.

Enchanted Christmas at Knowsley Safari Park : Review

Christmas is now starting to feel like a distant memory but thankfully we’ve still got our fantastic festive days out to look back on. After previously visiting Chester Zoo Lanterns, we were interested to see Knowsley offering a similar experience. Enchanted Christmas at Knowsley Safari Park seemed to be a smaller version of what Chester Zoo offered and while you don’t walk around carrying lanterns, the light up animals looked really affective. We therefore decided to book tickets to see how the two compared.

Enchanted Christmas at Knowsley Safari Park Prices

The main selling point of Enchanted Christmas at Knowsley Safari Park is the relatively low price. We bought the tickets online , and they cost just £7.50 each for both children and adults, with kids under three going free. We opted to pay an additional £7.50 per child so they also got Santa’s grotto included in the price.

What Is The Enchanted Christmas at Knowsley Safari Park?

The event starts after dark and runs from mid November to just before Christmas. You book your tickets for a specific day and you can enter any time between 4.30pm and 7pm, with the park closing at 8pm. Santa’s grotto is booked for a specific time so you want to organise your entry so you don’t miss your slot.

The Enchanted Christmas at Knowsley Safari Park consists of an illuminated trail through the foot safari where you can spot brightly lit animals on your way around. As with Chester Zoo, you don’t actually get to see the real animals, just their illuminated recreations.

Enchanted Christmas at Knowsley Safari Park : Our Experience

We’ve visited Knowsley Safari Park in the Winte r before, but only for the traditional safari. We were therefore excited to see what the evening had in store.

We had pre-booked our Santa’s visit for 6pm, so arrived at Knowsley for 5pm. We were able to park the car easily (free of charge) and made our way to the admissions. We were told we would have enough time to complete the illuminated trail before our allocated time for the grotto so we set off to find our favourite animals.

The animal lanterns were very similar to the ones we saw at Chester Zoo, just on a smaller scale. All our favourites were there, including zebra, tigers, and reindeer.

Enchanted christmas at knowsley safari park - three illuminated tigers

My daughter has an obsession with penguins after watching Mr Popper’s Penguins the week before so she was delighted to spot her favourite animal in all their illuminated glory!

santa knowsley safari park

Midway through the trail there was the chance to toast some marshmallows which the children loved. There wasn’t an additional fee like there was at Dunham Massey’s Christmas Lights . There was also room for the kids to sit down and enjoy their treat.

santa knowsley safari park

The trail lasted approximately 30 minutes which isn’t as long as the trails at Chester Zoo and Dunham Massey but considering the low price we felt it was still good value for money.

Santa’s Grotto

Despite having pre-booked we still need to join a queue to see Santa at our allotted time. The wait wasn’t overly long though, only around 15 minutes. The waiting area was nicely decorated and festive and the time soon passed.

santa knowsley safari park

When at the front of the queue we were greeted by an enthusiastic elf who had the kids giggling. Even our usually surly non-believer, who goes along with it all for his younger siblings, was caught laughing! They then went through to meet the big man himself and told him what they’d like for Christmas. They were each given a gift, all of which were unwrapped so they could actually choose something they wanted. Each gift had an animal theme in keeping with the surroundings.

Three children sat with santa at Enchanted christmas at knowsley safari park

Food and Rides

After the trail and visiting Santa we head to one of the stalls selling refreshments and sat down for a drink and a warm up next to the heaters. My husband had a rather disgusting hot chocolate (more hot water than hot chocolate), while the kids and I safely enjoyed our soft drinks. There was the opportunity to make hot drinks more festive with a shot of brandy or Baileys for an additional fee.

There were plenty of rides for the kids to enjoy, as there is when you visit during the day time. The prices were the same, £2 per child or £10 for an unlimited wristband. We opted for unlimited wristbands for the kids because we knew they’d only need to go on six rides each to make it worth the money.

There are plenty of rides to make the wristbands worth it and the kids had a great time. We actually stayed ride up until closing time. It was much quieter after 7pm so they were able to just walk on whatever ride they wanted without there being any queue. They probably managed over ten rides each before the park closed. We like to get our money’s worth!

Enchanted Christmas at Knowsley Safari Park : Summary

While Enchanted Christmas At Knowsley Safari Park isn’t on the same scale as Chester Zoo’s Lanterns, we still had a great time. The trail had the majority of the animals we would want to see including zebra, giraffes, tigers, and reindeer.  It’s an event that’s as expensive as you wish it to be. If you simply wanted to do the lights for £7.50 each you could easily do so. It’s just the additions fees of Santa and the rides that can make the evening a more expensive one.

The event was well organised with staff on hand to help, and despite the queue for Santa it all ran smoothly. We would definitely visit again in 2020.

Looks Totally delightful, and one for the to do list for next year for sure.

' src=

I sometimes find the smaller Christmas affairs can be just as good as the big, grand attractions. They are normally less crowded and have a more intimate vibe because of that. I’m glad you enjoyed this and just sorry that they can’t make a decent hot chocolate! C x

' src=

im a massve fan of xmas, and have been to many xmas themed places, but some of these displays are great! i want them in my garden lol! let alone a safari park, but it looks like a great place to visit.

' src=

The light up animals look amazing! But a bit pricey I think, as your not seeing real animals. We have a farm park with loads of animals and costs the same has this.

' src=

I do love festive days out with light displays and this sounds like a great evening out

' src=

I went to something similar to this at Kew gardens a few years back and it was lovely, that’s such a good price as well x

' src=

Oh this looks so good. I love the animals there that light up so pretty.

' src=

Wow this looks like such a magical experience. I can’t believe amazing the animal lanterns look. Would love to take my kids to something like this.

' src=

Aw looks like you all had an amazing family fun adventure for sure. Happy days xx

Knowsley Safari bring back family favourite carnival event for May bank holiday

THE north west’s favourite animal safari is bringing back its popular seaside carnival event just in time for the May half term.

Knowsley Safari Park will be transformed into a seaside funfair for the highly anticipated family event, with carnival workshops offering children the chance to learn impressive acrobatic skills.

And if that is not enticing enough, all the extras that come with the event are packed into the general admission price – with a 25 per cent discount available to those who wish to book online in advance.

The event will be underway for the May half-term from Saturday, May 25, until Sunday, June 2.

Families can have a go at acrobatic skills, including aerial silks, hoola-hooping and plate-spinning, as well as pier-themed games stalls, including coconut shy, tin can alley and hook-a-duck, in addition to Knowsley’s existing rides and amusements.

However, those wanting to take a back seat on the bank holiday madness can relax on the make-shift sandy beach with an ice cream and enjoy the entertainment of themed performers, including giant stilt walkers.

Visitors will also be able to visit the foot safari’s new addition, Bear Country, home to the Andean Bears, Bahia.

This breeding pair have settled in well and guests can learn how Knowsley conservation experts are helping protect this vulnerable species.

Meanwhile there are hundreds of other fascinating animals for visitors to enjoy on the foot safari and on the safari drive, including amur tigers, African lions, southern white rhino, Bactrian camels and Iberian wolves , as well as meerkats, giraffes and sea lions - Knowsley Safari really is a full day out.

Ian Duke, marketing manager at Knowsley, says: “Seaside Carnival was one of our most popular events last year.

“Guests really enjoy the nostalgia that traditional seaside games bring and children love having a go at the different acrobatic workshops - there really is something for everyone.”

Visitors must book in advance online at KnowsleySafari.co.uk to receive the 25 per cent discount. Payment on arrival is charged at full price. Please note that charges will apply for food and drink .

Meet Miron, the new Amur Tiger at Knowsley Safari

By The Guide Liverpool

When gates re-open on April 12 th , visitors to Knowsley Safari might spot a very special new resident – male Amur tiger, Miron – and the introduction of the 2 metre-long big cat could create a significant step forward for this endangered species.

Originating from Moscow Zoo, six-year-old Miron is now making Knowsley Safari home as part of breeding efforts to help save Amur tigers. It’s estimated that there’s just 500 to 550 of the species left in the wilds of the Russian Far East and North East China.

After a very carefully and strategically developed introduction programme during lockdown, Miron has been successfully introduced to female tiger Sinda in Knowsley Safari’s 10,000 square metre, Russian-inspired Tiger Trail for the first time.

Adam Kenyon, Head of Carnivores at Knowsley Safari, says:

“During the past few months Miron has been settling into his own separate part of the Tiger Trail, which gives him the chance to familiarise himself with the surroundings and Sinda’s scent. This has helped make the two tigers feel comfortable with each other and find the best time for them to meet.  Although still early days, I’m really pleased to say the first phase of introduction has gone well.

“What’s even more exciting about this introduction is Miron’s important genetic lineage.  One of a litter of four and the offspring of parents born in the wild, it’s created quite a special and unique opportunity to introduce new genes into the breeding programme. If the mating is successful, it’s really positive news for the ongoing conservation of these endangered big cats.”

Numbers of Amur tigers in the wild – and their prey – have been depleted by poaching and their natural habitats are being lost to logging and deforestation. Knowsley Safari is supporting projects run by the WildCats Conservation Alliance, which aim to stabilise and increase Amur tiger numbers.

Knowsley Safari reopens on Monday 12 th April and visitors can see Miron and the Tiger Trail on the open-air Foot Safari, which also features social distancing measures and sanitisation stations.

For the first three weekends after re-opening Knowsley Safari will be operating under extended opening hours until 7pm – last entry at 4:30pm. To book Knowsley Safari tickets, guests must pre-book a timeslot online at www.knowsleysafariexperience.co.uk .

With contactless entry and enhanced hygiene regimes and social-distancing measures in place across the Safari’s 550-acre site, guests can be assured of one of the country’s safest days out.

A walk in Moscow's grand new park, created by an American

October 7, 2018 / 9:30 AM EDT / CBS News

MOSCOW -- The hottest selfie destination in Russia's capital sits at the end of an elegant V-shaped walkway in Moscow's Zaryadye Park. The park itself is brand new – the result of an international collaboration led by New York-based architect Charles Renfro.

He is a partner in the firm, Diller Scofidio + Renfro, which also designed the wildly successful High Line in New York City.

Zaryadye, also wildly successful, is Moscow's first new city park in 50 years.

"It has become the most visited destination in central Moscow, and that makes me have chills and shivers," Renfro told correspondent Elizabeth Palmer.

Visitors have flocked to the park ... walkers and lovers, dreamers, tourists, families and friends.

But bringing Renfro's radically modern vision to Moscow caused some culture shock. Take the walkway that extends over but not across the Moscow River. "This bridge goes nowhere.  It goes nowhere! We had a hard time getting it through," said Renfro.

Why? "Well, because of the fact that it's not a bridge. And I think the Muscovites were wanting it to be functional. 'Why should we build a fairly expensive feature in the park that does nothing?' But you see how popular it is!"

Filled with light and life, this park is a prime example of how much Moscow has changed. Two decades ago, the site was home to the hulking Rossiya Hotel – a Soviet landmark famous for its 3,000 drab rooms, and its cockroaches. Finally, in 2006 it was demolished. For years the site stood derelict, until in 2012 President Vladimir Putin ordered up a park.

Renfro said, "We questioned whether we should do the competition, politics being what they were."

But Renfro was as stunned as anyone when Diller Scofidio + Renfro won the competition to design Zaryadye. "The idea that we could make something this intimate, this special, in the center of one of the world's busiest, biggest urban cities was just too titillating and too, too exciting," he said.

The Americans worked closely with their Russian partners, Citymakers, to design 32 undulating acres covered in native plants and trees … birds, drawn to this green refuge, which recreates all of Russia's landscapes.

Here, for example, are plants from the far north, underneath the fairytale domes of St. Basil's.

Renfro's partner, landscape architect Mary Margaret Jones, is the head of Hargreaves Associates based in New York.  She calls it "wild urbanism."

"Here we are, right now we're lost in this birch forest, [and] the city is right there. So, it's wild but it's urban," Jones said. "What interested us is the fact that it is a park, it is a landscape. And landscape is something that speaks to all people."

When they enter it, they leave the city behind. "The park managers, they love this part of the park – they say it's a little too romantic sometimes.  We think that's great!" said Jones.

But tucked under every hill in this park are hidden treasure.

Visitors can go inside to see a mock ice cave, a virtual reality tour of Moscow, or the Philharmonic Orchestra, in a magnificent new concert hall inaugurated just weeks ago that sits under a graceful glass dome.  Putin himself boasted that the hall was the best in Europe.

This summer, Renfro and Jones – along with their Moscow partner, Petr Kudryavtsev – spoke at the edgy Moscow Urban Forum. Renfro said, "I think the thing that worked out best was international cooperation."

Palmer said, "Russian-American relations are at their lowest point in a long time."

"Ohhh, you're going to go there," laughed Renfro.

"I have to go there!"

"I think it's wrong to say that American-Russian relations are at their worst point. What's at a bad point is our leadership around the world. But I think the people that are actually making this world a better place are doing so more cooperatively and more effectively than ever before."

Of Zaryadye Park, Renfro said, "This is a park for centuries. This is a piece of the city that will last well beyond anybody's lifetime.  It's a park for eternity."
