One Trip at a Time

Fort Lauderdale’s Port Everglades is a popular starting point for many cruises, and with good reason! However, navigating transportation options to the port can feel overwhelming. This guide simplifies things, laying out all your choices to get you to your cruise ship with ease.

Whether you’re driving your own car and need parking , flying in and require an airport shuttle, or considering a hotel with parking options, we’ll cover all the bases. This way, you can compare and choose the most convenient option for your upcoming adventure.

Fort Lauderdale is located about 30 miles north of Miami on interstates 75 and 95 (I-75 and I-95) and these are the routes most drivers will use to get to the port area. Only if you are coming in from further south will you come in on the famous Highway 1 from Key West.

Driving times from nearby major cities are:

  • Fort Myers: 2.25 hours (140 miles)
  • Orlando: 3.5 hours (220 miles)
  • Jacksonville: 5 hours (325 miles)
  • Tampa: 3.75 hours (265 miles)

Click more options , once your route is displayed, to open google maps in a new window

If you want to park at the port, check out the options here ; if you prefer to arrive the night before, check out these hotels which will let you park your car during your cruise if you stay the night.

There are two main airports you can use to get to Port Everglades. Fort Lauderdale airport caters mainly to low-cost carriers and is just a few miles from the port. If you use traditional carriers you may end up flying into Miami, 30 miles to the south.

Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood Airport (Code: FLL)

Just 3 miles from Port Everglades, if you can fly into here, your transit to the cruise terminal will be quick and easy.

Miami International Airport (Code: MIA)

The biggest airport close to Fort Lauderdale is in Miami. An American Airlines hub, Miami International is located in the centre of Miami and thirty miles south of the cruise terminal.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT

Public transport is not really an option from Fort Lauderdale Airport. Whilst you can catch a bus from the rental car   centre , it doesn’t take you close enough to the port to be worth it.

Public transport can take you from Miami to Fort Lauderdale Airport, reducing the cost of one of the options below.

The fastest option is the RedCoach which leaves regularly and takes about 45 minutes to get from Miami airport to Fort Lauderdale airport. It costs between $21 and $41 depending on the time you need to travel. Click here  for more information.

For Fort Lauderdale Airport, a taxi will not be expensive as the port is just a few miles away. Picking up a taxi from the taxi stand at the airport is probably easiest.

For Miami Airport, we advise smaller groups of cruise passengers to use one of the cheaper options available. But if you are a larger group, prices can be competitive with other options. If you want the luxury of a private transfer, the companies below can accommodate you.

Offering minibuses for up to 14,   Airport City Transfer   should be able to meet your transport needs.

Kiwi Taxi can provide private transfers for between 1 and 16 cruise passengers

Uber  and  Lyft will cost between $13 and $19 for a transfer from Fort Lauderdale Airport to Port Everglades and between $55 and $90 for a transfer from Miami International Airport to Port Everglades. These rates are  for the standard Uber X or standard Lyft.

For a discount on your first ride click for UBER or LYFT

With the Fort Lauderdale Airport so close to the cruise terminal, a shuttle probably won’t be your best option. Super Shuttle   can sell you a return transfer for around $60, but it will actually be in a taxi!

From Miami Airport Metro Shuttle Service can get 2 – 9+ passengers to Port Everglades for between $14 and $25 each way.

Renting a car for just a few hours is our favourite way to get to the cruise terminal from the airport. Once we discovered the option and tried it, we found it to be the perfect solution. As long as you don’t mind driving, possibly on the “wrong” side of the road for you, it gives you a private transfer that leaves on your schedule and can be surprisingly competitive with other transportation options.

Given the proximity of Fort Lauderdale Airport and Port Everglades, we would only recommend hiring a car if planning to head out and see the sights, otherwise, it probably doesn’t make sense to use this option. If you do rent a car, you could pay as little as $37 for less than a day’s rental.

But, if you are flying into Miami, this option could make a lot of sense. A small car can be rented for as little as $55 for less than a day, allowing you to drive yourself to the port.

HOTEL TRANSFER

With the cruise port right in the heart of the city and Fort Lauderdale airport just minutes away, it’s worth looking at a hotel which is close to one and provides a shuttle service to the other. Check out our  Fort Lauderdale hotels  section for more information.

CRUISE COMPANY TRANSFER

Paying the cruise company to get from the airport to the ship is rarely good value, especially if more than one or two people need a transfer. But, it does make the transfer easier as you’ve booked everything through the cruise line and therefore can rely on them to get you to and/or from the airport.

Introduction

Embarking on a cruise is an exciting and memorable experience, and if you’re starting your journey from the Miami Cruise Port, you’ll want to plan your transportation to and from the port with ease and convenience in mind. While the port is conveniently located near the heart of Miami, many travelers choose to fly into Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) due to flight availability or cost. This raises the question of how to get from Miami Cruise Port to FLL, as you’ll want to ensure a smooth and stress-free transition between your cruise and your flight home.

Luckily, there are several options available for transportation between the two locations, allowing you to choose the one that best suits your preferences, budget, and schedule. From shuttle services to taxis, ride-sharing services to public transportation, and even rental cars, there’s a solution that will suit every traveler’s needs. In this guide, we will explore the various options in detail, highlighting the pros and cons of each to help you make an informed decision.

Whether you’re a seasoned cruiser or embarking on your first voyage, navigating the logistics of traveling between the Miami Cruise Port and FLL can seem daunting. However, with careful planning and knowledge of the available options, you can ensure a smooth and efficient journey, allowing you to focus on enjoying your cruise and creating unforgettable memories.

Option 1: Shuttle Service

One of the most convenient and hassle-free ways to get from the Miami Cruise Port to FLL is by using a shuttle service. These services offer transportation between the two locations, ensuring a seamless transition for travelers. Many cruise lines and independent companies provide shuttle services specifically tailored for cruise passengers.

The shuttle service usually operates on a scheduled basis, with designated pick-up and drop-off points at both the Miami Cruise Port and FLL. The advantage of using a shuttle service is that it eliminates the need for you to navigate through unfamiliar roads or worry about parking. Additionally, by choosing a shuttle service provided by your cruise line, you can enjoy the peace of mind of being transported by a trusted and reliable source.

Another benefit of using a shuttle service is the convenience of having your luggage transported along with you. You won’t have to worry about lugging your bags around or finding adequate storage space. Instead, you can relax and enjoy the journey knowing that your belongings are taken care of.

When considering a shuttle service, it’s important to check the schedule and availability in advance. Some services may require booking in advance, while others may operate on a first-come, first-served basis. It’s advisable to inquire about the cost and any additional fees associated with the shuttle service to ensure it fits within your budget.

While shuttle services offer convenience and peace of mind, there are a few potential downsides to consider. Depending on the number of passengers, the shuttle service may make multiple stops along the way, potentially increasing travel time. Additionally, the schedule may be rigid, leaving you with limited flexibility if you have specific timing requirements.

In summary, utilizing a shuttle service to travel between the Miami Cruise Port and FLL offers convenience, reliability, and the assurance that your luggage will be taken care of. However, it’s important to consider any potential travel time increases and limitations on schedule flexibility when choosing this option.

Option 2: Taxi

If you prefer a more direct and individualized transportation option, taking a taxi from the Miami Cruise Port to FLL may be the ideal choice for you. Taxis are readily available at the port and provide a convenient door-to-door service.

When opting for a taxi, you’ll have the advantage of flexibility and convenience. Taxis allow you to depart at a time that suits your schedule, without having to adhere to specific shuttle or public transportation times. Additionally, if you have a lot of luggage or prefer a more personalized experience, a taxi offers ample space and a comfortable ride.

Taxis can also be a time-efficient option, as they typically take the most direct route to your destination. This can be especially important if you have a tight connection or need to catch a flight at FLL. Furthermore, taxi drivers are usually familiar with the area and can navigate through traffic or unexpected road closures to ensure a smooth journey.

When it comes to the cost of a taxi, it’s important to remember that fares may vary depending on factors such as distance, traffic conditions, and time of day. It’s advisable to ask the driver for an estimated fare before starting your journey to avoid any surprises. Additionally, be aware that there may be additional charges for luggage or tolls along the way, so it’s best to clarify these details beforehand.

While taxis provide numerous benefits, there are a few factors to consider. The cost of a taxi ride from the Miami Cruise Port to FLL can be higher compared to other transportation options, especially if you’re traveling alone. It’s important to factor this into your budget and evaluate whether the convenience and individualized service outweigh the potential higher cost.

Overall, if you value a direct, flexible, and personalized transportation option, hailing a taxi from the Miami Cruise Port to FLL is a viable choice. It offers convenience, efficiency, and will get you to your destination with minimal hassle.

Option 3: Ride-sharing Services

In recent years, ride-sharing services have gained immense popularity, providing a convenient and cost-effective means of transportation. Using a ride-sharing service like Uber or Lyft is another option to consider when traveling from the Miami Cruise Port to FLL.

Ride-sharing services offer several advantages, including the ease of booking through a mobile app and the ability to monitor the arrival and estimated time of your driver. These services also provide a door-to-door experience, similar to taking a taxi, but with the added convenience of cashless transactions.

One of the key benefits of ride-sharing services is the affordability. They often offer competitive pricing, especially for solo or small group travelers. This can be particularly appealing if you’re looking to keep your transportation costs low. Additionally, ride-sharing companies often provide options for different vehicle sizes, accommodating larger groups or individuals with extra luggage.

Another advantage of ride-sharing services is the convenience of scheduling your pick-up time. Whether you need to catch an early morning flight or have a late-night arrival at FLL, ride-sharing services operate 24/7, allowing you to travel at any time that suits your needs.

It’s important to keep in mind that ride-sharing services rely on drivers who use their personal vehicles, which means availability may vary depending on the time of day and location. It’s advisable to check the app for availability prior to your desired departure time to ensure you can secure a ride.

While ride-sharing services offer convenience, affordability, and flexibility, there are a few factors to consider. Similar to taxis, the total cost of your ride may depend on factors such as distance, traffic, and any additional fees or surcharges. It’s also worth noting that peak travel times or high demand could result in surge pricing, where fares increase due to increased demand.

In summary, ride-sharing services provide an affordable and convenient option for getting from the Miami Cruise Port to FLL. With their user-friendly apps, competitive pricing, and availability throughout the day, ride-sharing services offer a reliable solution for both solo travelers and groups.

Option 4: Public Transportation

If you are looking for a budget-friendly option and don’t mind navigating public transportation, utilizing the local bus or train system is a viable choice to travel from the Miami Cruise Port to FLL.

One of the primary benefits of using public transportation is cost-effectiveness. The fare for a bus or train ride is typically much lower compared to other modes of transportation. This can be especially appealing if you are traveling on a tight budget or prefer to allocate your funds towards other aspects of your trip.

The public transportation options in Miami include the Metrobus and Metrorail. The Metrobus has several routes that can take you from the Miami Cruise Port to downtown Miami, where you can transfer to the Metrorail. From there, you can continue your journey to the Tri-Rail station near FLL, which provides a direct connection to the airport.

While public transportation offers affordability, it’s important to consider a few factors. First, the journey may take longer compared to other modes of transportation due to multiple stops and potential traffic. It’s essential to plan your schedule accordingly to allow for any extra travel time.

Another factor to consider is the convenience of carrying your luggage. Public transportation may not have sufficient space or designated areas for luggage, so you will need to ensure that you can manage your bags comfortably during the journey.

Additionally, if you have a lot of luggage or if you are traveling during peak hours, public transportation may not be the most comfortable option. Buses and trains can get crowded, and you may find yourself dealing with limited space or standing for the duration of the journey.

In summary, if you are on a budget and don’t mind the potential longer travel time, utilizing public transportation can be a cost-effective option to get from the Miami Cruise Port to FLL. However, it’s important to consider the potential challenges of carrying luggage and potential crowding during peak hours.

Option 5: Rental Car

If you prefer the freedom and flexibility of having your own transportation, renting a car is a convenient option to consider when traveling from the Miami Cruise Port to FLL.

Having a rental car gives you complete control over your travel itinerary. You can choose your departure time, make stops along the way, and explore different attractions or restaurants if you have some extra time before your flight. This option is especially beneficial for those who enjoy independence and want to customize their travel experience.

Renting a car also eliminates the hassle of relying on transportation schedules or coordinating with other passengers. You can travel at your own pace, without having to wait for shuttle buses or taxis.

Furthermore, renting a car provides ample space for your luggage, ensuring a comfortable and secure journey. You won’t have to worry about sharing limited space with other passengers or navigating public transportation with bulky suitcases.

However, it’s important to consider a few factors when opting for a rental car. First, be aware of any additional costs associated with renting a car, such as insurance, fuel, tolls, and parking fees. These expenses should be factored into your budget to avoid any surprises.

It’s also essential to plan your route in advance and familiarize yourself with the roads and potential traffic conditions. While GPS systems and smartphone apps can provide navigation assistance, it’s always a good idea to have a general idea of the route you’ll be taking.

Returning the rental car at FLL is relatively straightforward, as there are designated areas to drop off the vehicle. However, it’s essential to allocate enough time for the return process to ensure you don’t run into any last-minute delays before your flight.

In summary, renting a car offers freedom, flexibility, and ample space for your luggage when traveling from the Miami Cruise Port to FLL. It’s important to consider associated costs and plan your route and return process in advance to make the most of this option.

When it comes to getting from the Miami Cruise Port to FLL, there are several transportation options to choose from, each with its own advantages and considerations. Whether you prefer convenience, affordability, flexibility, or independence, there’s a solution that suits your needs.

If you prioritize convenience and want a hassle-free experience, utilizing a shuttle service provided by your cruise line can be a reliable choice. It offers scheduled pick-up and drop-off, allowing you to travel without worrying about navigation or parking.

Taxis provide a direct and personalized transportation option, ideal for those who value flexibility and door-to-door service. While they may be a bit more expensive, they offer convenience and efficiency, particularly for individuals or small groups.

Ride-sharing services like Uber or Lyft provide an affordable and convenient option for getting from the Miami Cruise Port to FLL. With their user-friendly apps and competitive pricing, they offer a reliable solution for both solo travelers and groups.

If you’re on a budget and don’t mind navigating public transportation, using the local bus or train system can be a cost-effective option. While it may have longer travel times and potential space limitations, it offers affordability and an opportunity to experience the local transit system.

Lastly, renting a car provides the utmost freedom and independence, allowing you to plan your own itinerary and travel at your own pace. While this option offers convenience and ample space for your luggage, it’s important to consider additional costs and plan your route and return process in advance.

In conclusion, the choice of transportation from the Miami Cruise Port to FLL ultimately depends on your personal preferences, budget, and specific travel requirements. Consider the pros and cons of each option and choose the one that best suits your needs, ensuring a seamless and stress-free transition between your cruise and flight home.

12 best Panama Canal cruises for a bucket-list trip

Donna Heiderstadt

A Panama Canal transit is a rite of passage for many cruise lovers. Experiencing this marvel of early 20th-century engineering appeals to those with a wide array of interests, from history and politics to colonial architecture and wildlife. Built by the U.S. government between 1903 and 1914, this 50-mile waterway linking the Atlantic and Pacific oceans revolutionized shipping by creating an expedited route for the transit of cargo and, ultimately, cruise ship passengers.

Panama Canal itineraries are offered by almost every cruise line. Thanks to a 2016 canal expansion project, a third set of locks can now accommodate larger vessels. It's possible to cruise the Panama Canal on ships of all sizes (from 148 guests to more than 3,000) on itineraries that range from a week in the sun to a six-month world cruise.

Some ships sail a full transit of the canal, from the Atlantic to the Pacific or vice versa. These one-way journeys between Miami or Fort Lauderdale and Los Angeles or San Diego visit ports in Central America, South America, Mexico and California.

Others sail only a partial transit, entering the locks from the Atlantic and cruising into Lake Gatun before turning around and exiting again. These itineraries, sailing round-trip from Florida ports, combine the canal experience with island hopping in the Caribbean.

The array of options means that a Panama Canal cruise experience is possible even if you're short on time or have a limited budget — and chances are high that your favorite cruise line offers one or more itineraries. Most sailings attract couples, typically retirees, but if the timing is right, a Panama Canal cruise can also be a great multigenerational experience.

Here are a dozen of the best Panama Canal cruises to consider.

Holland America's 14- to 17-night Panama Canal cruises

mia to fll cruise terminal

Holland America offers a variety of Panama Canal cruises , but the most popular itineraries span 14 to 17 nights. They offer a full transit between Fort Lauderdale or Miami and San Diego, Seattle or Vancouver, British Columbia, or vice versa and are offered on multiple ships, including Koningsdam, Zuiderdam, Zaandam, Eurodam and Nieuw Amsterdam. These sailings call on Cartagena, Colombia; Puntarenas, Costa Rica; Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala; and Huatulco and Puerto Vallarta or Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Longer sailings also call on several Caribbean islands.

Who should go : Holland America ships sailing a full transit are popular with retired couples who appreciate the cruise line's consistency and good value. All four ships accommodate between 1,432 and 2,650 passengers and offer signature onboard experiences that include the Greenhouse Spa and the World Stage for evening production shows. The larger Eurodam, Koningsdam and Nieuw Amsterdam feature additional specialty dining options, such as Tamarind and Nami Sushi, as well as popular music venues B.B. King's Blues Club and Billboard Onboard.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises' 16-night Los Angeles-to-Miami cruise

Regent Seven Seas Cruises ' newest ship, Seven Seas Grandeur, debuted in November 2023 and will transit the Panama Canal on several occasions in the next few years. Wind Star and Wind Spirit are cozy and social four-deck ships, each featuring a pool and pool bar, a lounge and two restaurants. Using Uber or Lyft to Port of Miami and Port Everglades

If you’re cruising from Miami or Fort Lauderdale (Port Everglades) and don’t live in the area, then there’s a good chance you will need a ride to get to the port. While we cover all your transportation options to Miami here and to Port Everglades here , the one that we most recommend — and most often use ourselves — is Uber or Lyft.

Lyft service to Port of Miami and Port Everglades

By now most people have used one of these services. But if you haven’t, these companies are known as ride-sharing services or transportation network companies. Essentially, they allow anyone to drive their own car as if it were a cab. Drivers sign up, undergo a background check, and then can earn money providing rides around town.

For passengers (in this case people going to the cruise port), the entire process is run through an app you download on your smartphone. The app will tell you where the nearest available ride is, keeps track of the fare, and is even linked to your credit card for payment.

You simply download, enter your payment information, and request a ride when you’re ready to go.

Why would people prefer to use a service like Uber or Lyft instead of a taxi? For one, these services can be cheaper than using a cab. Furthermore, since drivers are rated by passengers after each ride (and can be booted out if their reviews are too low), the service received is often considered more pleasant.

Most importantly, it’s convenient. A ride is never far away and can be summoned with the click of a button. Within a single city there can be thousands of drivers.

Availability of Uber and Lyft in South Florida

Uber and Lyft are now available everywhere in South Florida, including major airports. So if you are flying into Miami or Fort Lauderdale, then you can catch a ride from the airport to the cruise port (more details below).

The same also goes for areas all around the region. So if you are anywhere from West Palm Beach to Homestead, then you can use the apps to get to the cruise ship.

The map below shows where you can be picked up by either Uber or Lyft. You can be dropped off anywhere you like.

Uber and Lyft to the Port of Miami

If you are sailing out of the Port of Miami, you can use a ride-share service to get you there cheaply and quickly. This includes if you are flying into Miami International Airport or Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.

Below we have a breakdown of the rates you can expect to pay for each service to get to the Miami cruise port . Fares can vary based on demand.

Keep in mind that your cost is per ride, not per passenger . Several people can ride for the same fare. As well, both companies have different levels of service, including XL offers (for a higher cost) that feature larger vehicles for more passengers or luggage.

Cruise passengers will likely be most interested that a ride from the Miami airport to the cruise port costs about $20 , compared to around $25-30 for a taxi.

If you plan on staying in the area, you can also look for a hotel with a shuttle to the Miami cruise port , which could be less expensive to get to the port.

Uber and Lyft to Port Everglades (Fort Lauderdale)

Cruising out of Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale? Just like with Miami, you can use the services to get to your ship at the port.

You’ll find the prices for getting to Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale below. Just as above, the prices are for the most basic service. Rates are for the entire ride, which is the same regardless of the number of passengers.

As you can see, it is a relatively inexpensive ride from the Fort Lauderdale airport to Port Everglades. A ride from the Miami airport would cost around $50 and take roughly 45 minutes. For comparison, a taxi from the Miami airport to Port Everglades would run approximately $75.

If you plan on staying in the area, you can also see our article on hotels with a shuttle to the Port Everglades cruise port .

Where to Catch Uber & Lyft at the Miami and Fort Lauderdale Airports

While you can pick up a ride anywhere in the South Florida area, many people will come from the airports. If you aren’t familiar with the airports, it can be somewhat confusing on where to catch your ride.

Miami International Airport Once your flight arrives, you’ll want to follow the signs to ground transportation and baggage pickup on Level 1 of the terminal. Exit the doors across from the baggage claim, you’ll see the line of taxis.

From there, you’ll want to cross the taxi lanes to the next median. Here you should see a sign for “Ride App Pickup.”

Miami airport rideshare pickup area

Check the app on your phone and it will show your location, as well as the driver’s location and their car. Use this to meet up with your driver.

Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport If you are flying into Fort Lauderdale, then you’ll exit the airport by following the signs for ground transportation.

Once outside, look for the signage for your ride options, including Off-Airport Parking, Tri-Rail, and Ride Sharing. There are multiple ride share pickup areas, and they are located in between terminals. Depending on where you arrive, it can be a long walk. The Uber or Lyft app will show you exactly where to go to catch your ride. Look for the large blue signs for where to stand for your ride.

You might notice several cars waiting for passengers when you arrive at the area. You’ll want to wait until your car shown on the app arrives. Drivers can’t give rides to different passengers than they are matched with on the app.

Where to Catch Uber & Lyft at the Miami and Fort Lauderdale Cruise Ports

mia to fll cruise terminal

Unlike the airports, as of now there’s not a dedicated spot where you catch your Uber/Lyft when you get off the ship at either cruise port. You simply head to the area for general passenger pick-up outside the terminal and request your ride. Meanwhile, with thousands of other passengers getting off the ship and likely other ships in port, things can be a bit chaotic.

That’s why we suggest walking a short distance away from the cruise terminal before requesting a ride. This way, there are no large crowds to contend with and it’s easier for your driver and you to find each other.

Just keep in mind that it may take a little patience before your picked up.

can an uber or lyft driver stop for few minutes at walgreens to pickup some remedies on our way from the FLL airport to port Everglades and how much it will cost please

Yes, you can add a stop. The app will tell you the adjusted price, but it’s normally not much.

Does UBER do pickups from Port Everglades to Boynton Beach, Florida

Yes. The cost is about $55 for a ride when we checked:

https://www.uber.com/global/en/price-estimate/

trying to arrange a ride to port of miami from air bnb in hollywood florida for 8-10 people. what would be my best option?

I’d call one of the local private car companies (like the companies that rent limos). They often have larger shuttles for that sort of thing. If not, you could rent a couple of Uber XL or Lyft XL cars designed for more people.

Do you pick up at hotels? We will be staying at the Plaza Hotel Fort Lauderdale and needing to go to the Celebrity Cruise terminal (Oct 2021). Trying to plan now. Also, do we need to make reservations or is it first come first serve? We’ve never used uber or lyft before. Thanks,

We are not Uber/Lyft. You’ll need to just download their app to your phone, set up an account, and then you request a car when you’re ready. No need to reserve.

How much for 3 adults 3 kids and 5 bags of luggage from fll to port of Miami?

I’d suggest two cars for that many people. A ride costs about $40 per car, each way.

Hi, We are going via the Tri-Rail to the Ft Lauderdale Airport Tri-Rail Station (500 Gulf Stream Way). Can we pick an Uber/Lyft from this Tri-Rail station and get to the Port Everglades?

We have a cruise from Port Everglades this Friday (13th March). Regards

Of course! Should only be $10-15 and take about 10 minutes to get there.

Hi Can I get a Uber or Lyft from Miami airport to a hotel in Wyndham Fort Lauderdale for two people and two suitcases please we arrive around 1650 hrs in Miami Also how can we order Uber or Lyft and what would be the cost Rgards

Yes, they offer service there. Just download the app and you can create an account. We’d estimate the cost would be about $30-40.

If I already have an Uber account here in Texas ….will it work in Florida? Do I need to download an ap for Florida?

No need to get a new account. It will work in Texas and Florida.

Can Lyft go from a hotel in Dania Beach all the way to a specific terminal in Port Everglades?

Absolutely. That’s only about a 10 minute drive.

Please advise an estimated cost for 4 adults with total six luggage bags for Uber and/or taxi from Bahia Delray to Port Everglades on Sunday 19 Jan. Thanks!

Looks like one car will be about $25-30.

Can Uber/Lyft pick up at Port Everglades?

Traveling from FFL Airport to the FFL cruise port, can the Uber make a stop at a Walgreens before the cruise ship? How much is for a stop or waiting time?

Yes, you can enter a stop. It shouldn’t be that much more of a fare for a quick stop like this. Just be sure to put it in the app and let your driver know.

Coming from Nicaragua and do not have a USA phone… how do I contact Uber to get picked up at airport? Thanks

As far as we know you’ll need a U.S. based phone. You can get a SIM card when you arrive. Or just use a taxi at the airport.

We are coming into MIA with 3 adults and 3 children and 3 pieces of luggage Could we uber to Holiday Inn downtown

Sure. You might want to split that into two cars since it’s going to be a big group.

Please let us know what it would cost two seniors to be taken from Naples, Fl. to the Port of Miami and returned 10 days later?

Uber and Lyft aren’t really designed for long trips like that. It’s more like a taxi where it takes you around town. We’d suggest contacting a local transportation company to see if they can give you a ride.

Where can I cruise without a passport?

At TPG, we always recommend cruising with a passport, but there are many reasons why you might want to set sail without one.

What if an opportunity pops up on short notice, and you don't have a passport yet? Or what if you forgot to renew yours when it expired? What if it's only a three-night cruise to the Bahamas, and the passport application fee is almost as much as the cruise fare? Or, maybe you have children nearing age 16 and can't justify paying for passports that will only be good for five years.

First of all, do you even need a passport to cruise ? The answer is often but not always. You have options to cruise without a passport because not every sailing requires them. Thanks to an international agreement called the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative , U.S. citizens can cruise on certain itineraries within North American countries using government-issued identification (like a valid driver's license) and proof of citizenship (like a government-issued birth certificate).

The cruises that you don't need a passport for are closed-loop sailings, which depart from and return to the same port within the U.S. One-way sailings from one U.S. port to another or from a U.S. port to a foreign one would require a passport.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Before we go further, let's clarify that when we talk about cruising without a passport, we're referring to pricey passport books that some travelers do not wish to purchase. Passport cards can also be used for identification when cruising in all the places we are about to discuss; these cards are a low-cost alternative to traveling with your driver's license and birth certificate.

Let's look at the options for where you can cruise without a passport.

Cruising to Alaska is one of the easiest ways to experience all the state offers. You'll have opportunities to see glaciers and wildlife; stroll the streets of charming coastal towns; eat your fill of local crab legs and salmon; and enjoy nature on a kayak, zip line or hike.

If you're interested in cruising to Alaska without a passport, look for itineraries that begin (and end) in Seattle , San Francisco or southern California ports, such as Los Angeles or Long Beach, California. The most common length for these closed-loop Alaska cruises operated by the major cruise lines is seven nights. Cruises early or late in the season might be only four or five nights, and trips departing from LA are usually 14 nights.

What if you really want to cruise one-way from Canada to Alaska (or vice versa)? Although Canada prefers U.S. citizens who arrive by sea or land to have a passport book, it is not required as long as they have proper identification and proof of citizenship. The U.S., however, requires one of the following WHTI-approved forms of identification for entries by land or sea: passport card, enhanced driver's license, I-872 American Indian card or trusted traveler program IDs like Nexus, Sentri and Fast.

Technically, if you have one of those forms of ID but not a passport book, you can take a one-way Alaska cruise — as long as you don't have to fly to or from Canada.

More complications arise for non-passport holders who book shore excursions that involve crossing from Alaska to Canada. White Pass and Yukon Route train rides are good examples. White Pass and Yukon Route allows cruise passengers to go on the three-hour train excursion without a passport but doesn't allow them to take any longer routes. That's their policy, not a legal requirement.

This means that Alaska cruises are one instance when the passport card would be a handy alternative to traveling with both an ID card and a birth certificate. It opens up one-way itineraries.

A cruise to the Caribbean transports you to tropical islands bathed in turquoise waters. Whether you seek warm beaches, cool drinks, water sports or cultural education, you can find a Caribbean cruise to fit the bill.

It's easy to cruise without a passport in the Caribbean: Just book one of the many closed-loop, round-trip sailings departing from a U.S. port. Most major cruise lines offer sailings that range between three and 15 nights from ports like Galveston, Texas; New Orleans; multiple ports in Florida (including Miami and Fort Lauderdale); Charleston, South Carolina; Baltimore; Bayonne, New Jersey; and New York City.

Most Caribbean islands participate in the WHTI, but it's always best to check the details specific to the ports of call included in your itinerary. Don't forget that islands such as Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix are U.S. territories, so visits never require passports for U.S. citizens.

Bermuda is a British Overseas Territory, lying 643 miles off the coast of North Carolina. Hop on a cruise ship for a direct route to the island's famous beaches and golf courses. Spring and summer are the prime seasons to visit, but cruises are possible throughout the year.

Cruising without a passport to Bermuda is also easy. Apart from a few isolated cruises stopping in Bermuda as they come or go from other destinations, there are no one-way Bermuda cruises to confuse the situation. If you plan to sail without a passport, be wary of any Bermuda cruise longer than 10 nights. Those are likely to be point-to-point cruises that happen to include Bermuda.

Passport-free cruises to Bermuda include ample five- to 10-night sailings from the East Coast ports of Baltimore, Bayonne, Boston and Manhattan. Occasional itineraries also pop up throughout the Bermuda season departing from Norfolk, Virginia; Charleston; and the Florida ports of Miami, Port Canaveral (near Orlando) and Jacksonville.

Long known for delightful strands of beach and access to every imaginable form of water fun under the subtropical sun, the Bahamas are the ideal destination for easy and quick cruise vacations.

Skip the passport on three- to five-night Bahamas cruises sailing round-trip on most major cruise lines from the eastern Florida ports of Jacksonville, Port Canaveral, Fort Lauderdale's Port Everglades and Miami.

A few longer, seven- to 15-night itineraries stop in the Bahamas on their way into the Caribbean. Departures from Bayonne, Manhattan, Baltimore and Charleston will often get you weeklong Bahamas itineraries, as will sailings from Tampa, Galveston and New Orleans.

Our southern neighbor boasts two coastlines of cruise fun. Like most tropical cruise destinations, the top draws are the beaches and the ocean; however, cruise ports in Mexico also give you access to ancient Mayan ruins, delicious cuisine and an abundance of land activities.

Mexico's Caribbean and Pacific coasts are both accessible to cruisers who do not hold passports. If you want to visit Mexico's eastern shores, you can find three- to 15-night cruises to Costa Maya, Cozumel and Progreso. Sailings depart Florida from Miami, Tampa, Fort Lauderdale and Port Canaveral; you can also find itineraries from New Orleans, Galveston and Mobile, Alabama.

Western Mexico, often referred to as the Mexican Riviera, includes the ports of Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan and Ensenada, among others. Cruises with several major lines depart San Diego, San Pedro port in LA and Long Beach for voyages lasting anywhere from three to 10 nights.

From water sports to American history and Hawaiian culture, there's a lot to experience on a Hawaii cruise . The best part might be the ability to hop from island to island, sampling the flavors of each as you go.

Closed-loop Hawaii cruises that don't require passports come in two varieties. The short option is to fly to Honolulu and take a seven- or 10-night cruise on Norwegian Cruise Line 's Pride of America. This is the only large cruise ship allowed to operate entirely within the Hawaiian Islands without visiting a foreign port.

Small-ship cruise operator UnCruise Adventures also offers seven-night, inter-island Hawaiian sailings. The American-flagged ships only cruise to and from U.S. ports, so no passport is needed, as would be the case on any domestic trip.

The long-cruise options consist of 14- to 18-night round-trip sailings from San Diego, LA (Long Beach and San Pedro) and San Francisco. You won't need a passport for these closed-loop sailings, but you do need to be prepared for multiple days at sea as you cross the Pacific from California to Hawaii.

Beware of 20-plus-night cruises that are round-trip sailings from the West Coast and would seem to fit the bill for closed-loop cruises that don't require passports. Most of these cruises don't work because they also include stops in French Polynesia, which is outside of the WHTI agreement. Passports are required for the islands in the South Pacific, which means they're required for the entire cruise.

Canada and New England

Cruises up North America's East Coast allow you to take in historical sights of early Americana, stand atop rugged cliffs on the coast of Nova Scotia or revel in the French culture of Quebec.

Mainstream cruise lines operate numerous cruises along the U.S. and Canadian coasts that don't require passports. These depart from the ports of Bayonne, Baltimore, Boston, Manhattan, Brooklyn and occasionally Norfolk. The majority of these New England and Canada cruises are weeklong fall sailings; however, a handful depart at other times of the year or are a touch longer, ranging from eight to 10 nights.

Related: The best cruises to Canada and New England

Some cruise lines also offer one-way cruises in both directions between Canada and New England. These itineraries, like Alaska cruises, might be possible without a passport book. This is the case as long as your plans don't include flying into or out of Canada and your cruise line allows you to cruise with either a passport card or other acceptable form of identification and proof of citizenship.

We checked with a few lines for you. Princess, Holland America and Celebrity all strongly recommend passport books, but they allow one of the WHTI forms of identification. Again, the passport card opens up one-way possibilities, assuming you aren't flying and your cruise only includes Canada and the U.S.

Bottom line

While cruising with a passport is always recommended, it's not required by law in certain circumstances. Closed-loop cruises from U.S. ports that visit Bermuda, Canada, the Caribbean and Mexico are part of an international agreement that allows U.S. citizens to cruise without a passport. In these cases, government-issued identification and proof of U.S. citizenship are acceptable alternatives to a passport book.

Passport cards are an affordable and unquestionable alternative to carrying an ID and birth certificate. If you want to go this route, know they are not valid for travel by air into or out of any foreign country, including Canada, Mexico, Bermuda or Caribbean countries — which is the primary reason most travel advisers urge cruisers to have a passport book.

As we've shown, you have plenty of options for where to cruise without a passport, and many travelers do so without incident. However, anything from engine trouble on your cruise ship to bad weather or an accident in port might necessitate a flight home from a foreign country. This would put you in an awkward position if you didn't have a passport.

Plus, as much fun as simple round-trip cruises are, passports open up additional vacation possibilities in the form of longer, point-to-point and overseas trips. Don't dismiss registering for a passport, even as you consider where you can cruise without one.
