Trek to Matheran: 3 routes you must try if you are an avid trekker
Updated on: 29 September,2017 09:25 AM IST  |  Mumbai Shraddha Uchil |
The pretty hill station Matheran is a paradise for hikers. We invite the authors of a new book to pick three routes and tell you how to negotiate them
Travel The Hiker's manual Matheran has for over a century provided respite from the chaos that is Mumbai. Carpeted in emerald-hued forests, it's a great spot for hiking and trekking. A new book, titled Matheran: A Mountaineering Manual by Swati Mahajan, Dr Rohinton Mehta, and his wife Rupa, acts as an exhaustive guide to 60 routes that snake through the area.
"The book took us about four years to research and document as it required extensive networking with other senior mountaineers, villagers and local guides," shares Rohinton. Each of the 60 routes is classified according to the technical difficulty and the endurance level required to complete it. "Once you start climbing, you will want to keep discovering newer ways to go up," says Rupa. EMAIL: [email protected]

Rambaug Forest Ramble (Pokharwadi to Rambaug Point) GRADE: Easy | TIME: 3 hours With no steep climbs, this is one of the most gentle routes in the area. The path begins at Pokharwadi (you can take an auto here from Chowk or Borgaon Phata). From here, take the mud road that heads north, towards Burujwadi.
After about 10 minutes of walking, you will arrive at a bridge over the Katwan stream. This will be followed by a short climb to the right, after which — just before Burujwadi — you will reach the first of the four plateaus en route to Rambaug Point. From Burujwadi, the route climbs gently towards the main Matheran massif (via Chowk Point). Once you're at the second plateau, you will encounter wild karvanda (bush plum) trees, where you can indulge in juicy berries if it's the summer.
From this point, the route moves onto the third plateau, then the fourth. Here, you will find the enchanting Rambaug Forest, locally called Chowki, which offers splendid views of Morbe Dam and, if you walk a little further, of Alexander Point in the north. Here onwards, the route continues up gently and brings you to the viewing galleries of Rambaug Point.
One tree hill (Ambewadi to One Tree Hill) GRADE: Medium | TIME: 3.5 hours It was in the year 1850 that Matheran was discovered by Hugh Poyntz Malet, the then collector of Thane district. And this is the route he used to first make the ascent.
To traverse this historic path, take the tar road from Chowk to Ambewadi. The route from this point is a straight walk of around 1.5km up a long ridge. You will then enter a small plateau with a well and a cemented boundary, after which you will find yourself in the lush Varosa forest, to the right of the well.
The trail will now start going upwards. Along the way, stop by the open-air Ganesha temple. From here, take a right into a long nalla towards the rounded hillock that is One Tree Hill (also known as Shivaji's Ladder; features steps cut into the rock). From this point, the top is at a distance of 500m. Matheran Market is about 3.5km away from here.
Experienced climbers may also attempt going from One Tree Hill to One Tree Hill Point, which, although only five minutes apart, can be quite treacherous.
The beatrice cliff assault (Burujwadi to Beatrice Cliff) GRADE: Difficult | TIME: 5.5 hours "We are not aware of any other hikers who have attempted the Beatrice Cliff assault route. It is a first ascent by us," shares Dr Rohinton Mehta. And there's a good reason no one takes this route lightly — there is no real path; only a nalla climb over the Katwan river waterway, over rocks and boulders.
This route is best attempted between December and May, when the nalla is dry. Don't venture here during the monsoon, as the gushing water from the nalla will make your climb slippery and dangerous. If you're starting out from Burujwadi, the authors also recommend taking the help of a local guide from Katwan village to negotiate the final 30 minutes of the tricky hike.
It's a straight path north from Burujwadi, along the main nalla. At one point, you will find the route going under a large boulder — scary yet thrilling. The hike ends at Beatrice Cliff, at the railway track.

Matheran – All You Need To Know Before Your Visit
Matheran is a quaint hill station tucked between the Sahyadri ranges of Western Ghats. Towering at a height of 2600 meters above sea level, Matheran is a much-needed solace from the cacophony of Mumbai. Marred by the blues of the “city that never sleeps”? Need a quick getaway for a day or two? Matheran is the answer to your wishes. Located at a mere 100 kilometers from the commercial hub of the country, Matheran is the picture-perfect weekend getaway. Matheran- literally meaning “overhead forests” is the smallest hill station in the country. However, the scenic splendor of Matheran is one of a kind, and the number of people visiting is a testament to that fact.
Matheran has a time-traveling charm to it in the weirdest sense. Step into the red soils, and you are instantly transported back to a time forgotten. Matheran is one of the very few places in the country that does not allow vehicles. As you tread along this rustic beauty of a town, with the lush greens around, you feel the salubrious effect it has on you. And why wouldn’t you? The symphonic chirpings of pigeons and the harmonious rustling of leaves are nature’s beautiful concert. Here is Matheran’s finest that you need to know before you visit this iconic location.
Table of Contents
How to reach Matheran:
Reach Neral by Mumbai Local train or Express train.
From Neral you can get a taxi or van from there it’s 30mins by road.
There is a lovely option for a toy train. Though it’s a little slow it gives you a beautiful view throughout the journey. During monsoon, toy trains may not work, plan accordingly. You can also start your journey from Mumbai directly to Matheran. It has properly developed roads.
There are 38 points to visit in Matheran but it’s not possible to visit all of them in a day. So it’s is suggested that you stay overnight to cover more. There are many places available to stay in Matheran, luxurious to low cost. You can do online booking a day before or just walking and check availability here. Matheran never disappoints you, you’ll get place always.
You don’t have to worry when you walk towards these points, directions on every walkable road have carefully planted. It can be exhausting after you visit 2-3 points, you can always ride on horse for an hour or two.
Here’s the list of few popular points you must visit during your Matheran trip:
1. Monkey Point
If there is something in abundance that this stunning hill station possesses, it is the enchanting views and amazing locations to view them. The Monkey Point is one such popular viewpoint. Stand at the monkey point and stare at the horizon and beyond. The palatial mountains and deep gorges will leave you spellbound. Wondering how the spot got its name? Well, you might have probably guessed it by now. A monkey point is a place where you can spot gangs of monkeys and boys they are a great company. You would hold your breath as the monkey play close to the edges of the terrain. They easily climb to the underside of rocks, least bothered about the towering fall that could kill them. It is a view that is uniquely exhilarating.
There are attractive views that your gaze can take you at this stunning spot. The mesmerizing sunsets with complete orange vibrance and plunging falls are all part of the captivating experience. Stand at the monkey point and shout out to the skies, the echoes will give chills down your spine. Hide your food and hold on to your things a little tight, monkeys like to snatch things. Sometimes, they might mimic you, the rare experience you can hold on to.
2. Echo Point
Another popular viewpoint in the area is the echo point. Well as the name suggests, the place is famous for its hair raising echoes and reverberations that it generates. The fluffy white blanket above and nature’s lush green carpet below, echo point is the place to absorb the true virgin beauty of nature. Serenity engulfs you from all sides and the utmost calmness that you feel is something any Mumbaikar would crave for. Echo point is also a foodie’s delight with several stalls serving Maharashtra’s best. A morning or evening visit is ideal, but the visit during rains is pure magnificence. Well, the roads are slippery, just be careful.
Echo point is a photographer’s paradise without a doubt. The Sahyadri ranges with its complete glory are visible from the echo point. The view is one that should be etched in memory and frames. Apart from echo point, Louisa’s point and porcupine point are places that offer bird’s eye view to this mesmerizing hill station.
3. Panorama Point
Panorama’s point is a photographer’s paradise. what’s more? The crowds are very less and you get that quality time that you can retreat to yourself with a spellbinding view in the background. Reaching panorama point is however a mission. But then again the best things in never come easy do they. One can even have a horse ride to reach the point. However, the last 2 kilometers does require trekking due to the steep trails. One can also use a toy train to reach a panorama point. The beautiful treks, the photography feast, and a chance to just stop and breathe for a moment…Panorama point’s charms are just about endless. Oh, Panorama point in the monsoons with its verdant greenery is just beyond words.
4. Honeymoon Point
Honeymoon Point is very tranquil and offers a captivating view of Matheran’s palatial mountains. From here, one can see Prabal Fort, various valleys accommodating civilizations and the vast beautiful sky that changes colors at dusk. The view of mountains from Honeymoon Point is such that you would call them ‘Indian Grand Canyon’. Wondering why it’s called honeymoon point?
Well, for one, visit honeymoon point and you feel the love in the air. You feel like there’s no place as romantic as honeymoon point in the world. A quiet moment with your love right here with no one to interrupt may just be the best moments you might have on a Matheran trip. Also, the beautiful sunsets in the background and your lover by your side is not something easy to pass upon. But most of all, that alluring and soothing silence that you just crave, especially if you are a Mumbaikar just draws people to this amazing spot.
5. Charlotte Lake
Matheran boasts of a fine number of vantage points to truly absorb its beauty. That being said, the quintessential aspect of Matheran is the Charlotte lake. Just a walking distance away from the main market area, this lake is the main source of drinking water Matheran. The origin of the lake is a dam, which overflows when it rains and forms a pristine little waterfall to form the shimmering lake in monsoon. A visit to Matheran without a visit to this tranquil beauty is just incomplete. The crystal clear blue waters that set a soothing ambiance is something beyond words. It doesn’t end there. Charlotte lake holds a certain sanctitude..almost a place of reverence for the locals here.
The lake has an archaic temple of Lord Shive – Pisharnath Mahadev Mandir and for the explorers and nature lovers at heart, all Charlotte has to offer is the charming ambiance of the tarn itself and the bountiful emerald green all around. And birdwatchers, brace yourself, Charlotte lake will not disappoint you. Also, charlotte place is an ideal place for camping, picnicking and most of all simply lazing down and watching the sunset. While the lake looks it full guts and glory at the monsoons, the rains make it impossible for camping and bird watching. So, the ideal time to visit is just immediately after the monsoon, during October-November.
6. The Other Side of Matheran
Despite being a tiny, laid-back hill station, Matheran offers some of the most adrenaline-pumping activities for those who are up for it. The zipline valley crossing between Louisa Point and Honeymoon Point is a very famous attraction for adventure enthusiasts, and you should try it once if you have the heart for it, because it is an extremely thrilling once-in-a-lifetime experience. The valley crossing at 2000 ft will put your heart at your mouth. Trust me, you’ll scream at the top of your lungs as you reach the middle. It is an experience worth having if you ever make it to a beautiful spot. Apart from this, Matheran’s shopping center provides a taste of the true essence of the area.
The small boutiques and local shops, where you can buy locally produced goods such as leather items, footwear, and other simple handicraft items is a paradise for collectors. and for buying souvenirs. A very sought after locally produced Matheran item is Chikki, which is a confection comprising jaggery and cashew nut. Chikki sellers also sell, fudge. Chocolate fudge is my personal favorite. The local cuisine of Matheran includes traditional Maharashtrian fare like vada pav and pav bhaji, Konkani misal pav, and of course, the very popular chikki. It would be almost a crime not to taste it after making the trip. There are plenty of shops selling the various variants of this cuisine and I suggest you embrace the soul of the place and give everything a try.
7. Trekking at Matheran
Matheran also provides a great trekking experience. The trek starts from Bhivpuri station and ends at Garnett Plateau or Garbett point . It’s a very easy one day trek. Sure, the blazing sun and the long route may pose some obstacles, however, apart from this, it’s a very easy trek. Trekking during the monsoons, however, is a heavenly experience. The drizzles trickling down your face and the cool gentle breeze brushing your hair is just an enthralling feeling. There’s also trek to One Tree Hill Point which is a moderate level one day trek. It starts from Dasturi Naka following the trail from Ambewadi to One tree hill point. This route is known as the Shivaji Ladder route. This trek is rare.
Matheran takes about only a couple of days to explore completely and at visit during monsoons will give you the best experience. What are you waiting for? Matheran is calling.
You can also explore Lonavala if the monsoon is on their way and hill station is your calling

I always wanted to head out for a trek along with my friends but never had the chance. This time my friends booked a trek for us without my knowledge as a surprise. And guys! I tell you I had the best time of my life trekking and enjoying the scenic views. Our trek was to Matheran, I am sure most of you might have already heard about this tiny little hill station. Our meeting point was Bhivpuri Station and at around 8:30 AM we started our trek. Trekking through the scenic views was definitely a cure for our mind and souls. We reach the Garbett Plateau and the view was something which will be cherished by us forever. We also made some new friends during the trip. With the scenic views we also got a chance to witness the diversified flora and fauna of this region. We also had very wonderful guide who was very friendly and keeping us all occupied with his funny jokes.

We were a group of 7 people who booked this trek. It was an amazing adventure for all of us. We started early in the morning and reached the trek base. We started at 8:30 AM. The morning was beautiful as we stated, the whole green view was something which you should have seen. Although the sun was playing with us but the weather was perfectly fine. We reach Garbett Plateau at around 1:30 PM and had a great lunch there. Then we started to Matheran by 4:40 and then towards Dasturi Naka. It was altogether a wonderful trip. Our guide was also good and providing us with all the information about the place. Good one!

A great one! It was a very great trek for all of us. Everything was very well arranged. I and my girl went on this trip. The tour operator has very well maintained everything. It was on time and we started at around 8:30 AM. It was a refreshing day although a bit cold. For your own convenience you can wear thin sweater if you want. The scenic views are something that really made our trek more interesting. Just be a little cautious about the grounds at some parts. We also enjoyed a great lunch and refreshments. Thumbs up for this one!
It was a wonderful trek to Matheran. I was on a solo trip and guess what I didn’t have to worry about anything. Everything was very well organized. The food was good and so was our guide. He was very friendly. I also made some new friends there and learnt that most of them were beginners. Since it was a trek for the day we covered all the places as mentioned on the package. Altogether a great trek.
It was one of the memorable trips for all of us. We were glad that we went on this tour. t was very well arranged and we also had an amazing guide. And the best thing was it was very safe for girls. Thanks to the team and the organizers. Loved it.

Peb Fort Trek – Trekking along the railway tracks(INR 400)
Imagine walking on a railway track amidst dozens of waterfalls. Imagine walking on a railway track surrounded by dense jungle. Imagine walking on a railway track in foggy weather. Imagine walking on a railway track admiring the lush green valley views. Oh hello, I am not talking about the Dudhsagar Waterfall trek . This railway track then leads you to a beautiful Fort known as “ Peb Fort ”.
Waterfalls as seen on Peb Fort Trek route
Peb Fort also known as “ Vikatgad ” is located in Raigad district of Maharashtra. Due to its proximity to the famous hill station Matheran near Mumbai, the fort attracts many trekkers mostly during the weekends. From the top of the Peb Fort, one can enjoy a 360 -degree view of the entire Matheran Hill range. One can choose the trek route of Matheran toy train track to reach the fort.
Matheran Toy train railway track
How to reach Peb Fort
The cheapest and most convenient way to reach the Peb Fort is via railways. The nearest railway station to Peb Fort is Neral Station. From Mumbai take a Karjat bound local train and get down at Neral Station. If you are coming from Pune, catch any Mumbai bound train and get off at Karjat. Now catch a CST-bound local train from Karjat and get down at Neral. Also, there are few direct trains from Pune to Neral(Sahyadri exp).
From Neral station, you can catch a shared Taxi for Matheran(INR 80) and ask the driver to drop you at the start point of Peb Fort trek ( 134 NM) which is few kms before the Dasturi Point.
134 NM- The start point of Peb Fort Trek
Difficulty level of Peb Fort Trek
The difficulty level of Peb Fort trek depends on which route you are taking. I took the easiest route to reach the Peb Fort trek which starts from 134 NM . In terms of difficulty, I would rate this route as an easy to medium level . One or two sections to reach the Peb Fort are little tricky especially in the monsoon season as it gets slippery, so be extra careful. There is no rope or railing for assistance, so a small mistake can be life-threatening.
Peb Fort trek Route
Various trek routes to reach Peb Fort
1) Matheran toy train route : This is the easiest route amongst all available. It starts from the rail marking 134 NM until you reach 154 NM from where you leave the railway track route and start the descend for the Peb Fort. After the descend, one has to ascend for around half an hour to reach the Fort top where there is a temple. On your return journey, you can reach the same point 154 NM and trek this time towards 180 NM which is near to Dasturi Point / Aman Lodge .
Peb Fort Trek route
2) Aanand wadi/Fanaswadi route : From Neral station, you can take a shared auto to reach Aanand wadi which is around 3-4 kms. You can also walk all the way to base village. The trek route to reach the Peb Fort from the village is a bit confusing and one has to follow the electric poles which guide you to the correct path. If you are a beginner, I would recommend you to take a local guide along with you.
The Sahyadri as seen on Peb fort trek
My journey to Peb Fort
“Trekking in a dense jungle along the railway tracks” sound interesting, isn’t it? But is it really allowed to trek along the railway tracks? Trekking on the railway track is a punishable offence with a penalty of imprisonment for up to 6 months and or fine up to Rs. 1000. So how is it possible to trek to the Peb Fort along the railway track?
The railway tracks in Matheran
The toy train services from Neral to Matheran is mostly closed during the monsoon due to the chances of landslides in the rail route. Also, during the other seasons, the toy train runs at a very slow speed so trekking isn’t banned on these tracks. I was fascinated to see a few photos of the trek on Instagram with waterfalls pouring on the railway track. That moment, I decided that I was visiting it very soon.
Landslides at Neral Matheran Toy train track route
I along with one of my friends took the Sahyadri express from Pune(7:00 AM) which reaches the Neral station at 10:00 AM. The rail route passes through the ghat sections of Lonavala and Khandala and provides some stunning views of Sahyadris.
From Neral station, we took a shared taxi for Matheran (INR 80 per person) which dropped us to a junction called 134 NM from where one can begin the Peb Fort trek.
Peb Fort as seen from the railway track
After doing the Dudhsagar Waterfall trek a few years back, I was waiting desperately to experience something of similar sorts. I was getting excited, excited to walk along the railway tracks. Without wasting any time, we started with the trek.
Lush green views as seen on Peb fort trek
After a few minutes into trekking, I shouted in excitement as I got a glimpse of a waterfall falling on the railway track. I rushed towards it, threw my bag in excitement and the other moment I was beneath the waterfall completely drenched.
Waterfall at Peb Fort trek
I was loving every moment of trekking along the railway lines. The views of the lush green valleys were fabulous and the sky was crystal clear. After walking for around 45 minutes or so, we made it to a point 154 NM from where one has to take the staircase way and start the descend to reach Peb Fort.
This patch is a bit tricky as there are no ropes or railing for safety and it generally gets little slippery in the monsoon. A small slip can throw you hundreds of meters down into the deep valleys. So be extra careful while traversing this patch.
Risky Trek patch
Further ahead starts the ascend which takes you to the ladder section. From the ladder section, it takes around 20 minutes to reach the topmost point of the fort where a temple dedicated to Swami Samartha is situated.
Ladders at Peb Fort
The 360-degree view from the top is just breathtaking. It was very windy and within moments the fort was completely covered under clouds. Then it started raining heavily. I sat near the temple just admiring the amazing views and thanking God for the gift of beautiful nature he has given us.
At the top of Peb Fort
After spending an hour at the top, we begin with the return journey. At the point 154 NM, we decided to take the other route so as to reach Matheran. Just as you pass the point 156 NM, you will get a good view of the huge Lord Ganesh Idol. The route is quite scenic as it is mostly covered with dense forest.
Ganesh Idol as seen from 156 NM
The sunlight was trying its absolute best to make its way through the dense forest. After walking for an hour, we made it to the point 180 NM which is situated near to Dasturi point/ Aman Lodge.
Dense Jungle of Matheran
We decided to go to Matheran from Dasturi point again by walking along the railway tracks. I had already visited Matheran a few years back so just wanted to visit it in search of good food as I was starving.
After enjoying some tasty local food at Matheran, we returned back to Dasturi point from where we got a shared taxi for Neral. With all the beautiful memories, we took a return train to Pune.
Near Aman Lodge Matheran
Food and stay options at Peb Fort Trek
As such, there is absolutely no food option available during the trek so make sure you carry few eatables along with you. Once you end the trek at Dasturi Point, there are few small dhabas where you can enjoy the local food. Do carry at least 2 water bottles along with you. ‘
Peb Fort near Matheran
For stay option, you can either pitch in a tent at the top of the Fort or stay at the Swami Samartha temple. Also, there are a lot of stay options available at Matheran so you can find the same once you reach Matheran.
The tent that I carry during the treks is Quechua Arpenaz 2 Tent . It has enough space for 2 people.
Best time to visit Peb Fort
Undoubtedly, the monsoon months of July, August and September is the best time to visit the Peb Fort as the surroundings are lush green and the weather is extremely pleasant. Also, you can enjoy the numerous waterfall falling on the railway tracks. But remember, for the most part of the day the surroundings may not be visible from the fort due to the heavy fog.
My expenses:
Pune to Neral: INR 100( return journey, local train)
Neral to the Start point of Peb Fort: INR 80
Dasturi to Neral: INR 80
Food: INR 140 (breakfast & Lunch)
Total: INR 100 + INR 80+ INR 80 + INR 150 = INR 400
The entire journey from Pune to Peb Fort and back turned out to be extremely delightful. Walking along the railway tracks, enjoying the mesmerizing views from the top of Peb Fort, enjoying the local food in the foggy weather at Matheran, and taking a bath in a waterfall, I couldn’t have asked for much in a days’ time. I hope I will return soon to this beautiful fort, maybe by trekking from the other route.

you can connect with me on my instagram handle @onacheaptrip
Hi, That was a beautiful experience😊 but I wanted to ask, one of my friends went to peb recently and he said there was a tricky part where there is a big rock amd you have to clime with rope there.. is it really difficult ?I was thinking about going to peb with my family and don’t think my mom would be able to climb with rope
Hey Thank you 🙂 Nothing like that, there isn’t a rope patch if you take the rail route which I have mentioned in the post. you can visit this place with family if you take the route which I have suggested in the blog post.
On thing missing.overall timing from neral station to fort&back.
Thanks for the info Abhi. The pics are fabulous

Beatrice cliff trek ❤️toughest matheran trek is beautiful.
Images may take 30s to load, else refresh
Niraj can you suggest a sahyadri trek with no crowds on weekend ? Well how about a trek with no crowd and no trail. In the Beatrice cliff trek you walk through a jungle, then through a dry river bed & then through a waterfall gully / nalla. There is absolutely not a single soul on this trek. Infact during the trek you actually wish if someone could just confirm your route. The Beatrice cliff trek OR “Kalokhya Khindichi Vaat” ( काळोख्या खिंडीची वाट ) is the most offbeat Matheran trekking routes with the highest level of difficulty. This Beatrice cliff blog will be your trek guide to plan this trek yourself. Similar adventures like this one at the end of the post .
Matheran is one of the most famous hill stations in India where vehicles are not allowed. Normal tourists reach Matheran via the Neral toy train or just drive on the normal road to reach Dasturi Naka ( which is the entrance point of Matheran). These tourists then visit different view points of Matheran by walking or on a horse. However adventure lovers like me love to reach Matheran by trekking from base village to these view points & then descend by some other point or return from Dasturi Naka.
How long is the Beatrice Cliff trek ?
Niraj, how much time does it take to complete this Beatrice trek to Matheran? The Beatrice cliff point from Katwan is about 11kms and easily takes about 5-6 hours. The interesting thing about the trek is that you can see the gully right from the Katwan village but even after walking for couple to hours the gully appears to be at the same distance. If are not going to get your bike on the offroad road to Katwan then its additional 90 minutes of walking from Pokharwadi.
Is Beatrice trek difficult for beginners ?
Beatrice trek is difficult for experienced trekkers. There is no hard core rock climbing but there are few rock patches in between and the end which requires some rock climbing skills. Plus the rock structure keeps on changing after every monsoon meaning no can predict the exact difficulty. Add to it the long distance/time of trekking makes is a DIFFICULT trek. If some one wants to climb up this waterfall route in monsoon, good luck with that.
What is the best time for Beatrice Cliff Trek ?
Being a waterfall route the only non risky time to do this would be winter & summer. Due to the long exposed nature of this trek I would suggest it for winter time. If you plan to do this in summer I would suggest you start extra early with lots of water. Trekking here in monsoon is extremely risky & idiotic due to the risky & slippery conditions and for the chance of rock fall.
Trek pe khaane ko kya milega ?
There are no shops at Katwan.Since this trek is very offbeat home made food available at other sahyadri treks is not available here easily. You can request some locals for food but it all depends on your luck. Once at Matheran top plenty of food options are available.
Matheran Range Trek Idea
Many Matheran points are trekkable. These points include One Tree Hill Pt . from Ambewadi, Rambaug Pt via Dhanwadi, Alexander Pt via Katwan, Beatrice Pt via Katwan, Sunset Pt from Dhodani, Garbett Pt from Bhivpuri, Malang pt via Hashyachi Patti, Pisarnath Ladder route via Umbarnewadi, Peb fort from Anandwadi. So for doing a range trek you can trek to any of these points and then descend to another point. If some of you are tired after the ascend they can simply skip the remaining part of the range trek by taking a taxi from Dasturi Naka ( Matheran’s entrance). My personal choice is to select Garbett for descend since it is better connected with railways for going home easily after a tiring Matheran range trek.
For Beatrice trek one can plan this trek in many ways, but If you have your personal vehicle I would suggest to reach Pokharwadi/ Burujwadi walk to Katwan trek to Beatrice & then climb down via alexander/ Madhav point to Katwan OR via Rambaug Point to Pokharwadi
How to reach Katwan for Beatrice Cliff Trek from Mumbai & Pune?
You can reach Katwan which is the base village for Beatrice Cliff trek complete the trek & walk further to the start of Matheran @ Dasturi Naka & take a shared taxi to Neral railway station and head home OR after reaching the top descend to Katwan from other Matheran points mentioned above.
Nearest Railway Station is Karjat
Base Village for Beatrice Cliff Trek is Katwan
Karjat > Borgaon Phata > Pokharwadi > Burujwadi > Katwan > (Trek to) Beatrice Cliff
Update 2023: There is very good road till Pokharwadi. Earlier one needed to start trekking from Pokarwadi to Katwan ( 5.5 kms). Now a road is built till Burujwadi. So after Pokharwadi >Dhanwadi >Burujwadi is now doable . From Burujwadi the road gets completely offroad. And it would be better to walk from Burujwadi to Katwan (3.5kms) unless you have a bike like me.
Shared Public Transport to reach Katwan
- By Road to Borgaon Phata: For guys coming from Mumbai side one can take the Karjat bus and get down at Borgaon phata ( Or reach Chouk and take rickshaw to Karjat and get down to Borgaon phata). Many ST bus & shared EECO ply on this route
- By Train: If you reach the Karjat Railway station. No direct Bus is available from Karjat to Pokharwadi but one can take any ST bus / Rickshaw from Karjat Station going towards Panvel/ Chouk / Rasayani which can drop you at Borgaon Phata for 10-15 Rs per seat ( 12 kms ) .
- From Borgaon phata There are EECO which run between Borgaon Phata to Ambewadi on hourly basis which can drop at Pokharwadi. In case the vehicles are not available one can walk 3.5 kms of scenic road to Pokharwadi enjoying the views of huge Morbe Dam.
- BEST OPTION is to reach Karjat station (if you are more in number) is to meet a rickshaw / tum tum driver and negotiate a drop till Pokharwadi or till Burujwadi which would cost around 350-400 for one way drop. One can also ask the same driver to come back to pick u up after the trek ( if you plan to go back to Karjat station again ). In case you end your trek at Matheran there are plenty of options available from Matheran to reach Neral railway station.
It should take about 45 minutes from Karjat station to Pokharwadi
Private Vehicle : Just add Burujwadi on Google Maps and enjoy this beautiful drive. Roads are newly made in Feb 2023. If you have a bike like me you can drive on the offroad till Katwan.

Make most of your life
The most common question that i get asked is I want to travel a lot but I dont have leaves. Should I quit my job ? I have always suggested to not quitting unless you have another source of income. In search of this source of income I tried freelancing , trek leading, vlogging and I realised nothing works in the long term. After trying many different thinkgs finally I came across trading. This is perfect for someone who loves travelling & wants to earn from anywhere around the world
Learn trading for freedom. You can trade from anywhere around the world be it some off the grid village in Himachal or Meghalaya, be it some island in Andaman. All you need is an internet connection and a trading account. You can earn by trading for 1-2 hrs a day and would have freedom to do anything in the free time.Or you might have just earned enough in a day to take the month off travelling around the world. If you are able to learn this then it has potential to make all your dreams come true. I would suggest you take it up as a side project for 6 months to see if you have patience & intellect to master it.
Once you learn it, all you need is a trading account and a mobile to trade from anywhere in the world.
Beatrice Cliff trek to Matheran: TheFreeBird’s story
As part of my personal #ProjectMatheran , I have already trekked to Matheran via Rambaug Point, Garbett , Peb fort, One Tree Hill , Sunset point , Hashyachi Patti & Pisarnath Trek . I wanted to finish all the trekking routes to Matheran as quickly as possible. Next in my line up was the most difficult trek to Matheran i.e. the Beatrice Cliff trek. This is just a walk through the dried water stream to reach the top hence its a given that the route changes after every monsoon so we didnt really know beforehand if the route is still doable or will have to return midway 😁. Instead of walking from Pokharwadi to Katwan. I decided to take my bike directly till Katwan & plan the descend to Katwan from either Alexander or Madhav point
On that day the weather was very clear and Matheran was clearly visible from the approach road. I could spot Matheran’s Garbett point, Little Chowk point & Big Chowk Point as seen below.
After Pokharwadi the road becomes a bit rough till Burujwadi. From Burujwadi till Katwan its a complete offroad. I am so glad with my decision to purchase Xpulse which is a best bike for a trekker like me. Burujwadi to Katwan should take about 40 minutes to walk. We completed it in 10 minutes
Just before Katwan the gully for Beatrice cliff became visible and it appeared way to close to be taking 5 hours. I felt we could do it in 3 hours & never have i ever been so wrong. Katwan is a base for many offbeat treks like for Beatrice, Garbett, Myra, Madhav & Alexander point. I planned to complete atleast 2 today.
Katwan village is spread across two parts. I parked my bike at the second one & walked through the village which had the Beatrice cliff as a artwork in the background
From the village we had to get down to the river for which we walked to a dry stream near the village and took a trail that led to the river
Walking across the stream is a really tiring & time consuming activity. Hence the important part of this trek is not walk in the stream right from the village itself. As I have mentioned in the route map at the top there is a initial jungle part which has a well marked trail which saves lots of time instead of directly walking in the stream. When we get down from Katwan to this river bed there is a trail split one goes to Garbett & other towards jungle. I missed the jungle trail & reached the river bed and had to figure out the way to the jungle trail. Fortunately after scrambling for a bit and moving in the direction of Beatrice we met the jungle trail .
In half hour of this jungle trail we saved atleast 2 hours of walking in the river bed. The trail is well marked in this jungle. Once we completed this jungle part we finally reached the stream from where the time consuming trek through the river bed begun.
The rocks in the stream became bigger & bigger as we moved ahead. It may appear a bit troublesome to walk but it was cake walk and felt like a normal trail with many ups & downs. I could imagine the flow of water in monsoon & thought i should revisit this in monsoon if I find some like-minded trekker.
Soon we reached a stream curve from where the Myra point became visible. Some people take this waterfall route to the top & its a bit simpler compared to Beatrice cliff. May be some other day as today it was going to be stress testing at Beatrice
Going ahead we reached a huge rock in the middle of the river bed. This has to be the biggest landmark for the trek. Since there was nothing else to do till now apart from negotiating the route we decided it would be good fun to climb it. The climb really got me excited !
Steep trek begins after we cross this huge rock. The rocks become bigger & much more erratically placed. Looking for the next adrenaline pump we reached a chimney-type formation in the route complete with choke-stone stuck in the middle. As the steepness increased with every step so did the difficulty level.
Some places had smaller stones aligned in proper way for an easy climb. Other places we had to think to make way.
Negotiating the steepness becomes difficult after every turn & we were left guessing what to expect after every climb
As we moved ahead the rock sizes had become very large. We wanted to cover maximum distance before the sun got hotter. But it had been 3 hours since morning & the trail didnt show any signs of finish line. We were looking for a flat surface under a shadow to have lunch but that was no where to be found , hence had no option but to continue climbing ahead. Looking back it seemed we had walked a lot but still had not covered much distance. Gully climbs are very deceptive.
This was the most difficult patch of the entire trek. There was no other by pass visible for this rock climb.
At one spot it felt entire block of soil had eroded leading to a very steep climb. The rocks seemed to be very loosely held and just waiting to fall with little pressure
By now we had gained lots of height and about 4 hours into the trek we had finally reached the tree line of Matheran. The top was still not visible but we seemed to have crossed the major rock climbs and what remained was a scramble to the top. Looking at all the shadow and flat surface we decided to have lunch.
We had carried 4 Litres for both of us but ran out of water and it was only the chimney climb where we had last seen water. The climb is just exhausting and the hot weather doesnt help. After resting for a while we started our way to top which took another hour. As you reach the top many plastic bottles start to appear every now and then. Human beings are stupid.
We climbed to the top near 187Nm & were lucky to be welcomed by Matheran toy train. The last section below this trail is another rock patch which though doable some might find very difficult. But there are other traverse to reach the top if the rock patch is not for you. From the top the entire Beatrice cliff / valley was clearly visible.
It gave a sense of achievement to having completed the toughest trek in Matheran. I consider these views as my achievement trophy. One can also reach Matheran by car & see the same view but I guarantee you they wont value it as much as we trekkers do. From here one can easily walk to Dasturi Naka to take a taxi home. But we had to head back to Katwan for my bike.
We walked through the Matheran market to reach Alexander point for descend. Enroute we visited Myra Point, Madhavji Point & Khandala point. These points have beautiful view of our entire trek. We reached Alexander point and waited for sun to go down a bit before descend.
Alexander point descend provided us with beautiful views. We reached Katwan in an hour, got on my bike and headed home .

Irshalgad – 6 things you need to know about this beautiful fort
- Trekking Destinations
Table of Contents
Irshalgad Trek: An Introduction
Irshalgad lies in between Matheran and Panvel in Maharashtra and is at an altitude of 3700 feet.
The fort is not known for any historical events but Netaji Palkar, one of the most decorated senapatis under Shivaji Maharaj was born in Chouk Manlivali.
It is also known as a sister fort to Prabalgad.
It is one of the most sought-after treks in Maharashtra because of the view of the Irshal pinnacle from the Irshalwadi plateau and the unique hole-like structure at the pinnacle.
Region: Matheran
Altitude: 3700 feet
Difficulty: Moderate
Best Season: Monsoons (Winters are also considered good)
How to reach Irshalgad
The base village for the trek is Irshalwadi & Naniwali village; however, to reach the base from Mumbai Pune, these are the two best options:
- Take a local train to Karjat/Panvel from CST railway station and then take a local bus or private rickshaw to Chouk Manivali.
- The rickshaw driver will charge you between 300-450 INR one way from Karjat to the start point and it takes around 30-40 mins to reach .
- You can drive to the base village. The distance from Mumbai is 55 km.
- Note: The parking fee is INR 50 for two-wheeler vehicles & INR 100 for four-wheeler vehicles.
Trek Difficulty & Route
The Irshalgad fort trek is approximately 3 kms from Naniwali to the Irshal pinnacle. It requires anywhere between 4 -5 hours to complete the hike; Hence it is a medium-level trek . The trek can be done in the monsoons, though it gets a bit slippery and can get tough for people not used to trekking in the monsoons.
The trek starts from Nanivali village next to Morbe dam, and is an easy ascend till Irshalwadi or you can call it a comfortable 2.3 kilometres walk.
From the village head towards the temple dedicated to a local deity, from here the remaining distance of 1 km is a bit of a steep climb, and one may require short breaks in this part of the section. From here every trekker climbs a steep ridge.
To reach the Nedhe (a hole in the rock), one has to a thrilling climb over ladders and stones using the ropes attached.
This is an experience in itself and one should be careful especially during the monsoons.
There is a technical section to reach the very top, which is only recommended to people with experience in technical climbs & mountaineering. (It should be avoided by seasonal trekkers).
The area of the fort is not large but there are several water cisterns cuts from the rock.
You can also subscribe to our monthly travel newsletter, where we give information about treks, travel hacks, travel experiences & discounts on various travel gear, and treks organised by our partner.
Things to do & see
- Majestic views of the Matheran range
- Irshaldevi mandir at the top
- A hole-like structure at the top called Nedhe
- Camping at the Irshalwadi village
Important Information
- It is suggested to carry enough water, as you can only refill the water at Irshalwadi village. There are no water sources at the top where you can fill your water bottles.
- You can check the trek route on Ramblr or download the GPX file after logging in and import the file to your Google maps.
- Try the local food at the Irshalwadi village; you can ask the villagers to prepare a meal for you beforehand.
- The trail is well laid out, so you do not require a local guide. However, if you are a beginner, we recommend getting one who can help you through tricky sections and make food arrangements if needed.
