Touring Beautiful and Unique Homes in Puerto Vallarta

View from one of the homes on the Puerto Vallarta home tour of architecturally interesting homes

Exploring architecturally interesting homes in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

On the ifc home tour.

As the bus wound its way up the cobblestone streets of Conchas Chinas, the affluent neighbourhood nicknamed “the Beverly Hills of Puerto Vallarta”, magnificent views of the Bay of Banderas greeted us on one side of the bus. The Sierra Madre Mountains framed our view on the other side.

Three of the four houses featured on this day’s International Friendship Club (IFC) home tour were in this area, just a few minutes south of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Although homes on the tour are sometimes for sale or available to rent, property shopping is not the purpose of IFC Home Tours. The tours simply provide an opportunity to see and marvel at unique and interesting homes.

Puerto Vallarta IFC Home Tour: pool area at one of the homes

Different homes are featured each week on the tour. You can take the tour several times and likely not see the same home twice. Many of the people on the tour I was on had been on previous tours. The guide on our bus had led twenty-five tours so far this year and had only encountered one repeat home.

Conchas Chinas translates to “Chinese shells”.  Our guide didn’t know the origin of the name. According to Wikipedia, the name refers to the type of shells found on Conchas Chinas beaches. Unlike most of the homes in the area built on several levels, the first home on our tour was all on one level. Dating to the 1940s, it was the oldest home we would see. It had originally been three separate houses.

Puerto Vallarta IFC Home Tour: four spaces from the first house on the tour

The other homes on the tour had all been built after the year 2000. All homes had four or five bedrooms, and more bathrooms than bedrooms. The last two, at 8,000 and 10,000 square feet respectively, were the largest. This first home was the smallest and my personal favourite. The bedrooms were small compared to those in the other homes, but there were many comfortable and inviting living spaces.

Puerto Vallarta IFC Home Tour: three spaces from the second house on the tour

Every house had spectacular views.

View from one of the homes on the Puerto Vallarta IFC Home Tour

The International Friendship Club (IFC) began in 1985 with a handful of people from Canada and the United States meeting socially. Today it has over 600 members and is a registered charitable organization in Mexico serving the ex-pat community with educational seminars, speakers, Spanish lessons and a variety of social events. They support more than twenty charities: educational institutions, medical/dental services, orphanages, social service providers and their own Cleft Palate Surgery program. For unknown reasons, cleft palate and/or cleft lip birth abnormalities are prevalent in the area. The nearest hospitals equipped to do corrective and reconstructive surgery are in Guadalajara. Through the IFC’s Cleft Palate Programs doctors and nurses from Guadalajara travel to Puerto Vallarta four times a year to treat the cases. The doctors and nurses volunteer their time. IFC pays for their flights and accommodations. Local medical facilities provide space and follow-up. The Home Tour is the major fundraiser for the IFC.

The home tours usually run Tuesdays and Wednesdays in winter months. Check the IFC website for exact dates and to book a ticket. Although buses drive participants from home to home, participants need good mobility. There may be steep and uneven driveways or walkways to navigate from where the bus parks. Houses are likely to have stairs.

I enjoyed seeing the homes on the tour and would gladly take the tour again on a future trip to Puerto Vallarta.

Never miss a story.  Sign up for Destinations Detours and Dreams monthly e-newsletter and receive behind-the-scenes information and sneak peaks ahead.

What stands out in all these houses is the color. There are some vivid features in each that brighten the whole space.

Ken, I love the colour. It fits with the location.

I love taking house tours anywhere and everywhere. I’m with you on liking the older one the most–looks cozier. Ken’s right about all the color. Color is a must!

RoseMary, I liked the comfortable living spaces in the older home. The bedrooms were smaller than in the other homes. A couple of the other homes seemed designed to be vacation rentals for small groups, so large and relatively separate bedrooms were important.

Hello Donna, this place looks amazing. The scenarios are fantastic. I would love to visit there. What is the perfect time to visit?

John, Puerto Vallarta gets tourists all year round, but November through March is prime season. Summer months can be hot, humid and rainy. The home tours operate mid-November to mid-March.

I never get tired of taking home tours, Donna and love imagining myself in some of the beauties I’ve seen. My favorite of the houses you pictured here is the oldest one which has so much color and character. I remember taking a couple of tours of refurbished colonial houses in Merida, Mexico, when we first started traveling in 2012 and being so tempted to scrap our travel plans and settle down to renovate one. Tell the truth – I’ll bet you had a twinge or two of temptation, too! Anita

Anita, I too love taking home tours and like to imagine myself living in the houses. I think that is why I liked the first one the best – it was the one I could most picture myself in.

What a wonderful way to see the luxury side of Puerto Vallarta. How the other half live. Great knowledgeable guides give great commentary and you enjoy comfortable air conditioned coaches to travel in. Stunning views along the way as many homes are high on the cliffs. I highly recommend this tour and cannot wait to try it out again

Cannot say enough about this food tour experience. The tacos/ pazole and other dishes all speak for themselves from various neighborhood local eateries. The main point I cannot rave enough about is how the owners / tour guides are deeply connected with the community, care passionately for Mexican culture and history, and overall provided a fantastic experience. You finish the night with full bellies, and full of insight and information provided by the tour. Local Women owned and operated, and truly a bit of a total Anthony Bourdain experience. Ask as many questions as you want, stop and grab drinks / beers / shots along the way if you like, and ask for more food if you really liked one of the items!

Love that this is a food tour run by locals AND it's women owned AND they are sustainable and bring re-usable cups. I went on the Off the Beaten Path tour in Pitillal which was delicious and featured more authentic tastes of the area. Our tour guide also had DEEP cultural understanding of the area and that made the tour that much better and interesting. The only reason I give this a 4 and not a 5 is that I got an absolutely terrible case of Montezuma's Revenge after this tour and I think it was because of the ice in the agua frescas. I would recommend tourists stay away from those. I lived in PV and should have known better but figured this was a tour for tourists and that they must have taken the proper precautions. I don't think so. That all said, would ABSOLUTELY take a tour from them on my next trip to PV. Will just be more careful in that one area.

What a FUN experience today. We had a tour with Carla and she was incredible. Friendly, knowledgeable, and funny too! We did the taco tour (5PM) that was really a great look into the food and history of the area. Every taco was delicious and had a good story. We learned about the origins of the food and more. I highly recommend this tour if you want to eat your way through town. Warning: come HUNGRY! Everything is delicious and even with a totally empty stomach you'll leave very full and very content.

This is the tour we talk about the most to people who ask us how our trip to PV was. We did the evening taco tour and Carla was our guide. It was just us and another couple and we all had the best time, and left totally stuffed full of tacos and aquas frescas. The tour lasts about 2.5 hours, and you make 2 desserts stops and about 5 taco stops. You walk through the Emilio Zapato neighborhood and the guide will tell you all about the history of the area and the history of food in a way that is really engaging and interesting. The owner, Star, came by one of our stops to say hello and to collect payment from those of us who opted for 10% off for cash payment. She was so kind and grateful to share her business with us. We LOVE supporting local tourism and Star's business is the epitome of everything we love supporting. We are so glad that we found her company in a Google search. I will recommend this tour and this company to anyone and everyone. Highly highly highly recommend-- come hungry!

My friend and I did the breakfast tacos tour yesterday with Chacha, who is absolutely AMAZING! It was an honor to meet her and learn from her. She offered us so many delicious tacos from LOCAL spots where the LOCALS eat!!! All sorts of delicious things you will love, as I did. I left feeling content with a happy belly but not gross or stuffed. Chacha taught us about each of the taco stands and their owners, and she taught us quite a bit about Puerto Vallarta along the way too. We also got a guide at the end, so we can go back to each of the stops. I really loved this tour, and I highly recommend it. I also loved the sustainability/green efforts. While drinks are offered, I would suggest bringing some water with you as well. Honestly, this is a MUST if you're visiting PV. Eat like a local!

You're going to enjoy so many tacos.

We had a wonderful time on our food tour with Karla! She showed a lot of knowledge and passion about the food and culture of Puerto Vallarta! Come with an empty stomach and open mind as you will try several delicious items from many local stands and restaurants that are off the beaten path. We would definitely use Vallarta Local again!

Loved our first tour on Sunday so much we booked a second tour on Tuesday. Tour guides Star and Chacha are super fun and knowledgeable about local food and cultural food history. Each trip lasts about 4 hours and the only complaint I have is that you eat so much food you need to take a nap afterwards! I want to give them 10 Stars since we went on two five star tours this week!!

We thought we were getting a simple, local food tour. What we got were hours of laughs, incredible cuisine, local history, and wonderful lessons in Mexican culture and history. This was one of the best "tours" we ever had. What a fantastic evening! Our guide was amazing!
