21 Best Cruise Luggage and Packing Accessories

best luggage to use on your cruise and packing accessories

Sharing is caring!

Are you thinking about getting new suitcases, carry on bags or packing accessories for your next cruise? 2021 is a great time to upgrade your luggage and get organized with some new lightweight packing items.

In this post, I’ll share some of the best reviewed and most practical luggage to use on a cruise. I’ll also include some useful items that will take your cruise packing organization up to another level!

best cruise luggage and packing items

What luggage should you bring for your cruise?

Cruise lines aren’t very strict on how much luggage you can bring, but do encourage each cruise passenger to bring no more than 2 suitcases, less than 50 pounds each. In reality, 1 suitcase per person should be sufficient for a 7 night cruise. In addition to your suitcase, you should pack a carry on bag for embarkation day.

Beyond this, items like garment bags are very helpful to transport formal wear like suits and cocktail dresses. You may also want to pack a backback or beach bag for shore excursions and port days.

A carry on bag is a must for embarkation day . Since it will take a few hours to get your luggage delivered to your cabin, your carry on bag should be packed with your first day essentials and valuables.

14. packing cubes.

Packing cubes are one of the best ways to organize your cruise clothing and outfits. It’s a good idea to get 2 sets in different colors, especially if you’ll be traveling with more than one person.

I absolutely love packing cubes , and found them extremely helpful to keep organized in on our last cruise!

15. Compression Packing Cubes

These lightweight packing cubes claim to compress your clothing, much more than regular packing cubes. While I love packing cubes, and the structure they have, the compression abilities are minimal.

On my next cruise, I’ll be trying these compression packing cubes and I’ll report back. In the meantime, you can read the excellent reviews on Amazon (they’re a great quality).

7. Stats & Ranks : Just to sprinkle in some numbers, this duffel measures a neat 22″ L x 12″ W x 11″ H. Oh, and did I mention it’s ranked #9 in Travel Duffel Bags and is a solid 4.2 out of 5 stars from a whopping 16,980 ratings? Yep, it’s kind of a big deal.

Simple, stylish, and oh-so-practical – the DALIX duffle bag is the unsung hero of carry-ons. Grab yours and let the cruise adventures begin!

Why Having a Carry-On is Crucial for Cruising

If you’ve ever been on a cruise, you know it’s not just about those sunsets over the horizon or the all-you-can-eat buffet (though, let’s be real, those are pretty epic). It’s also about making the journey as breezy as possible. Here’s the lowdown:

Streamlined Boarding and Disembarkation

Picture this – you’re strolling onto the ship, no fuss, no stress, and certainly no juggling of too many bags. The right carry-on means easy-peasy boarding and getting off, without the dreaded luggage drama.

Keeping Essentials Close and Secure

Whether it’s your passport, that snazzy camera, or your favorite book, a great carry-on ensures everything you NEED is right at your fingertips. Plus, knowing they’re safe and sound? Priceless.

Limitations and Restrictions on Cruise Ship Luggage

Cruise ships ain’t the place for the “pack everything but the kitchen sink” approach. They’ve got rules, and a smartly-packed carry-on helps you play by the book, making sure you don’t overstep those luggage boundaries.

So, before you set sail on your next maritime adventure, remember: the right carry-on isn’t just a bag; it’s your trusty sidekick for the high seas!

Factors to Consider When Buying a Carry-On Bag

If you’re set on finding that magical carry-on to make your cruise experience smooth sailing, there’s a checklist we’ve got to run through. Let’s dive deep:

Size and Dimension

First things first, size does matter here. You don’t want a bag that’s giving you the evil eye from the airline overhead bin or getting the side-eye from cruise staff. Make sure your bag fits snugly within cruise and flight guidelines.

Think of your carry-on as a superhero. It needs to stand strong against the unpredictable tides of travel. Go for something robust that laughs in the face of rough handling and salt spray.

Compartments and Organization

It’s not just about shoving stuff inside. Imagine pockets for your sunglasses, a slot for your passport, and a nook for that instant-read beach novel. Ah, organization bliss!

Security Features

The world’s an adventure, but let’s be real – it’s also a bit sneaky. Get a bag with solid locks, crafty anti-theft designs, and those secret pockets where you can stash your super-secret stuff.

Comfort and Mobility

Whether you’re racing through terminals or casually strolling the deck, your bag should be by your side, not dragging you down. Look for wheels that glide, straps that adjust, and designs that feel like they’re giving your back a gentle hug.

Aesthetic and Style

You’re not just any traveler; you’re a *stylish* traveler! Your bag should scream (or, you know, subtly whisper) fashion and function in equal measure.

Goldilocks had it right – you want something not too pricey, but not too cheap. Aim for the sweet spot where cost meets quality.

In the quest for the ultimate carry-on, remember these golden rules, and you’ll be cruising in style!

Wrapping It Up

Choosing the best bag to take as carry on for cruise vacations isn’t just some passing whim; it’s the difference between smooth sailing and choppy waters. Remember, this isn’t just about packing—it’s about picking your travel buddy, the one that holds your essentials, keeps them safe, and is always by your side.

If there’s one piece of advice to take from this voyage through the land of carry-ons, it’s this: invest in a bag that’s both tough-as-nails and sleek-as-a-seal. A little splurge now on a top-notch carry-on can mean countless hassle-free adventures ahead.

So, as you prepare to feel the sea breeze and hear the call of distant shores, make sure your choice on the best carry on bag for cruise is up for the journey.

When you arrive at your cruise ship, certain important items should be kept with you until you reach your cabin. If you are flying to your port and going directly to the ship, this bag will also be your flight carry-on bag.

Here’s how to decide what should be in your cruise carry-on bag.

Save For Later 4

What Is A Cruise Carry-On Bag

Also known as an embarkation day bag, this is a bag or tote that you carry with you from the port to your cabin, not allowing it out of sight. It contains the most crucial items you need for your cruise.

Why lug around a carry-on bag on the first day of your cruise?

When you arrive at the port to go on your cruise, your luggage is whisked away to be X-rayed for dangerous or prohibited items before being delivered to your cabin. Delays can happen, and you might be onboard for hours before your luggage is delivered to you.

So you’ll have everything you might need during those first few hours onboard (as well as when you’re flying to the port), you should keep certain items with you at all times until you can secure them in your cabin.

► NOTE : Whether it’s just a tote bag or a small roller bag, it’s important that your cruise carry-on stays with you until your cabin is ready and you can safeguard your valuables.

After going on many cruises in the last few years, I’ve come up with a list of must-haves that I pack in my cruise carry-on for all our voyages. I’ve expanded the list to try to cover any eventualities I could think of, so feel free to pick and choose among the items listed here for what works best for you.

How To Decide What To Pack In Your Cruise Carry-On Bag

There are a few criteria to think about as you’re packing for your cruise , decisions that determine whether an item will go into your luggage or into a bag that you’ll keep with you at all times until you arrive at your cabin. These are:

  • Will the loss of the item mean that I can’t continue on my trip, or will losing it ruin my trip?
  • Is the item valuable? Would someone be tempted to steal it?
  • Is the item difficult or prohibitively expensive to replace during my trip?
  • Will I need this item sometime during the first day, before my luggage is delivered?

If the answer to any of these questions is yes , then the item should be in your cruise carry-on bag. I hope this list can help you remember what might be essential for you to take and will act as a starting point and memory jogger.

I’m a big fan of having my belongings organized on a trip, which helps with packing, unpacking, and keeping track of small belongings while you’re traveling. I’ve included some suggestions that you might want to consider for your next trip if you want to be more organized too.

There are many items that you might want to consider packing in your cruise carry-on bag. You won’t want to carry all these items around with you all afternoon on day one of your cruise, but some of them are incredibly important to safeguard that way. Others, like snacks, may not be important to you at all, unless you have special dietary needs.

Important Paperwork

Without the proper documents, you probably won’t get far, so these are the most important things to pack first. It’s also a good idea to be prepared for travel delays, accidents, and misadventures…just in case. Better to have these things and not need them, than to need them and not have them, right?

Passport Holder Cover Wallet RFID Blocking Card Slot for Women Men, Navy Blue

Passport Holder

Want to be super-organized with your documents? Check out passport holders like this one, which is the one we use every time we travel. It keeps your passport safe from damage and has an extra slot for your vaccination card.

Identification for travel : Driver’s license, passport, visa, and green card (if you’re a resident alien).

Travel documents : Airline boarding passes, hotel reservation confirmations, cruise documents, excursion reservation confirmations, vaccination cards, and airline lounge cards.

Insurance information : Cards, coverage information, and contact information for your health insurance, travel insurance, travel interruption insurance, and car insurance (if you’re renting a car during the trip).

Carrier information : Contact info for cruise line and airline customer service, and for any hotels you may have booked.

Your emergency contact info : Names, phone numbers, and email addresses of those you’d like to be notified on your behalf in case of emergency.

Your legal documents : Although I hope you never need them, it’s a good idea to have a copy of your signed health care power of attorney and living will with you when you travel, especially if you have health issues.

Silk Road Internet Address & Password Logbook (removable cover band for security)

Keep Your Passwords Handy

It’s so frustrating to be away from home and unable to log into a website you desperately need access to. Having your passwords with you gives you peace of mind. I use a book just like this one for my personal login info, then one in another color for my business logins.

Authorization for travel with a minor: If you’re bringing a child on the cruise who isn’t yours, say a grandchild, you need a notarized permission from the parents for the child to travel with you.

Health information : A list of the medications you’re taking, as well as a brief medical history (a list of surgeries, hospitalizations, etc.).

Copies : In case they’re lost or stolen, keep a copy of your passport and any credit cards you’re bringing on your trip (both front and back).

Just in case : Pen and a small notepad.

Ziploc bag : In the event you’re forced to stand outside in the rain while waiting to board your ship, you want your important documents to stay protected. A large Ziploc bag is perfect for this. It’s also good to take along with you in a backpack or tote bag on excursions.

Wallet : Safeguard your wallet and keep it with you.

Cash : It’s a good idea to have some cash with you, not only for emergencies or gambling but also for some small bills for any gratuities (such as for the baggage porters, or bus drivers on excursions).

Credit cards : I’d suggest only taking two or three credit cards with you and leaving the rest at home. It’s smart to not take a credit card that you use for automatic bill pay. That way if that card is lost or stolen, you have other options with you, and you don’t have to redo all your automatic bill payments when you get home. The card you used for your cruise and airfare should be among those you take with you, as well as a credit card that gives you perks you may be using on this trip (such as coverage for airline incidentals or airline lounge access).

House and car keys : Losing these could cause major worries during your trip, as well as difficulties afterward, so they should stay with you until you can leave them in your cabin’s safe.

Jewelry : Cash and credit cards can either stay in your wallet or in a travel organizer as I mentioned above. But for jewelry, it’s nice to have a specialized organizer to protect your jewelry and keep your necklaces tangle-free, while still being small enough to fit in a cabin safe. This organizer is attractive and compact, and protects necklaces, rings, watches, etc.

In this connected world, we like to have our devices with us, so here are a few things to consider.

Cell phone : You’ll need your phone, of course, and bonus points if it has a good enough camera that you don’t feel the need to bring your DSLR.

Kindle Paperwhite (16 GB) – Now with a 6.8" display and adjustable warm light – Denim

Something To Read

You may end up with time on your hands while you’re traveling, so I love to have something to read. My preference is a Kindle, since I can bring more than enough books to keep me entertained during the trip without taking up valuable real estate in my suitcase. Be sure to have it charged and preloaded with your genre of choice before your trip!

iPad or other tablet : I like to bring my iPad along on trips, not only to have games to entertain myself with on the plane, but also to have a larger device to transfer my travel photos to for viewing and editing while on the trip. And if I want to write a blog post or two, it’s easier to do on the iPad than on my phone.

Chargers and cables for all devices : Your tech devices will be nothing but paperweights if you can’t recharge them on your trip, so be sure to bring everything you need to keep them juiced up.

CAOODKDK Electronics Accessories Organizer Pouch Bag, Travel Universal Organizer for Cable, Charger, Phone, SD Card, Business Travel Gadget Bag

Organize Your Cables

This cable wallet is a great way to keep those charging cables organized while you’re on the go. Since an ill-fated trip where I had to pay $70 for a new charger for my iPhone, now I always keep my cables and chargers in my carry-on.

Universal adapters : If you’re traveling on a ship that doesn’t have American electrical outlets, or will be staying in a hotel outside the US during your trip, it’s a good idea to bring along a travel converter.

Portable charger : Have you ever been on an excursion and had your phone die on you? Yep, it’s happened to me. Now I always carry along a portable charger like this one so I can be sure I’ll stay connected and get all the photos I want.

Earbuds or Headphones : If you want to listen to music while you travel or are on vacation, or if you want to watch a movie on board your plane, it’s a good idea to have your own earbuds or headphones. Your needs and budget will determine whether you take along wired earbuds , wireless earbuds , or wireless headphones , but these are a few great choices.

Cruise Power Strip No Surge Protector with USB Outlets - Ship Approved (Non Surge Protection) Cruise Essentials in 2023, 2024 & 2025

Charge All Of Your Devices

Since many cruise cabins have limited electrical outlets and few or no USB chargers, it’s a good idea to carry your own. I always travel with this non-surge adapter, especially on older ships.

Health & Beauty

Medications : Be sure to take all prescription medications with you that you’ll need to take during your trip, plus a few days extra, just in case. The best practice is to bring prescription medication in its pharmacy bottle, but you do you. Also include any over-the-counter medications you may need, such as your solution of choice for seasickness, diarrhea, pain relief, or heartburn.

Antibacterial wipes and hand gel : Although I haven’t done it in the past, I’m bringing travel packs of disinfecting wipes and antibacterial gel with me on my next trip. Wiping down your airplane tray table and armrest is just smart these days, and the gel is perfect for your hands before you start popping airline pretzels or peanuts. The wipes will also come in handy when you arrive at your cruise cabin.

Vision needs : Glasses and/or contact case and fluid. Eye drops, because airplane air is extremely dry. Sunglasses, because you may spend time waiting in bright sunlight before boarding your ship, or because you want to hit the pool as soon as you get onboard. Eyeglasses, and maybe an extra pair if you depend on them and they break or lose a screw while you’re onboard.

General Medi Mini First Aid Kit, 110 Piece Small First Aid Kit - Includes Emergency Foil Blanket, Scissors for Travel, Home, Office, Vehicle, Camping, Workplace & Outdoor (Red)

Mini First Aid Kit

I like to put together a mini first aid kit for my carry-on, nothing more than a small Ziploc bag with pain relievers like ibuprofen, cough drops, a few Band-Aids, and the like. In my suitcase, I’ll pack a larger kit like this one with more options such as gauze, ointments, etc. If you ever have to get a Band-Aid or cough medicine from a cruise ship medical clinic or sundries shop, you know how expensive those can be.

Lip balm and hand lotion : Once again, because airplane air is so dry, it’s a good idea to have a lip balm with you, as well as a small tube of hand lotion.

Toothbrush and toothpaste : After a long day of travel, you might want to freshen up in your cabin before going exploring.

Deodorant : See above. LOL

Hairbrush : A lot of us are picky about our brushes and might feel lost without our special one, so toss yours in your carry-on.

Feminine products : If you use pads, tampons, or panty liners, be sure to bring a supply with you for the plane and your first few hours onboard the ship.

Mack's Pillow Soft Silicone Earplugs, 12 Pair – The Original Moldable Silicone Putty Ear Plugs for Sleeping, Snoring, Swimming, Travel, Concerts and Studying | Made in USA

Rest In Quiet Bliss

If your headphones or earbuds aren’t noise canceling, or you simply want to be sure you’re not disturbed by noisy neighbors on the plane, in your cruise cabin, or in your hotel room, you should consider inexpensive earplugs. I’ve used the Mack’s brand of silicone putty earplugs for years and love them. Now I never travel without them.

Sunscreen and lip balm : A must, even in colder climates. Keep that skin protected!

Tissues : I always keep a travel packet or two of Kleenex or Puffs tissues in my bag on vacation. The sniffles can sneak up on you at any time.

Manicure items: You never realize how important a nail file and nail clippers are until you break or tear a nail away from home and don’t have a way to repair it.

Makeup : Want to always look your best? Be sure to pack whatever beauty products you need for a quick touch-up.

Extra outfit : What if your suitcase is lost or delayed, or someone spills a drink in your lap while you’re traveling? You won’t be miserable if you have another outfit handy. Bring along a top, a pair of pants, and extra underwear.

Pool attire: If you want to hit the pool as soon as you board the ship, you’ll want to have your bathing suit, coverup, and flip-flops in your carry-on. Your suitcase might take hours to arrive in your room, but you won’t care. You’ll be chilling by the pool with an umbrella drink in hand!

Outdoor Ventures Packable Rain Jacket Women Lightweight Waterproof Raincoat with Hood Cycling Bike Jacket Windbreaker

Be Ready For Downpours

An unlined lightweight rain jacket with a hood can be folded up small enough it won’t take much room in your carry-on. I’ve had to wait for my suitcase on the tarmac in a driving rain before when I took a regional jet to Seattle, and it wasn’t fun. Be prepared!

Scarf : Sometimes planes are extra cold, even in the summer, so a pashmina or other large scarf can cover the back of your neck or act as a small blanket. Either way, having something on hand to keep you warm is nice.

Cardigan or light jacket : If your plane is cold or you need to wait in line outside before boarding your ship, you’ll be glad you brought one of these along.

Food & Beverage

Snacks : A few granola bars, bags of nuts, or cookies can be a lifesaver on a flight, especially if you’ve skipped breakfast to make your flight, and the flight is too short for meals to be served. Don’t be hangry; grab a bar from your bag to tide you over until you can check out the ship’s restaurants for lunch.

koodee Insulated Water Bottles-17 oz Stainless Steel BPA Free Water Bottle Double Wall Vacuum Sports Water Bottle Flask(Royal Blue)

Refillable Water bottle

I like to have water available in my bag on a plane, just in case I get a scratchy throat or need to take a pill. Double-wall insulated water bottles like these are great. On the ship, I refill mine from a pitcher of ice water I order each day from room service, and keep it by my bed. If you want a smaller, lighter version, look for a collapsible water bottle.

Gum and/or breath mints : The reason for these is obvious, right? If nothing else, they can be used to break the ice with an attractive seatmate if you’re single.

Kids’ Needs

If you’re traveling with children, you’ll probably need a carry-on just for their needs. Here are a few ideas:

Diapers and wipes : Bring enough in a carry-on for the entire first day.

Bottles or sippy cups : Be sure to also bring baby formula in TSA-approved containers.

Kid-friendly snacks : You know which snacks will keep your kids occupied and avoid the hangries. Bring some in plastic baggies.

Entertainment kit : Several small items to keep your child entertained on the plane.

Miscellaneous

Lanyards : If you don’t want to carry a purse onboard, a lanyard for your cruise card is a great option. We’ve tried these and found them to be good. I like to carry a small wallet with a shoulder strap while onboard, something just large enough for my phone, some eye drops and lip balm, and my cruise card.

Cruise Luggage Tags for Carnival Cruise | NCL Norwegian Cruise Line | MSC Cruises | Princess Cruises | Cruise Essentials Cruise Accessories Must Haves

Protect Your Luggage Tags

Print out the paper luggage tags provided by your cruise line and slip them into these durable luggage tag holders. Don’t put them on your luggage until you’re off your plane, though, so you don’t confuse the airline’s baggage handlers.

We use these for every cruise and have found them to be sturdy and durable, plus they protect your paper tags from the elements, which is a bonus in rainy Florida.

Bags To Consider For Your Cruise Carry-On Bag

Looking for a carry-on bag that can work as your personal item on a plane? Even though you won’t be needing ALL the items mentioned above, a regular tote bag might be too small for all your carry-on essentials, so something slightly larger would be great. If you pack an extra outfit per person plus your grooming kit bag, like we do, you might just use a regular airline carry-on. It’s a pain to drag around, but you don’t have to carry it and you have peace of mind.

How about something like one of these?

Travelon Anti-Theft Heritage Tote Bag, Pewter, One Size

A Theft-Resistant Shoulder Bag

If you simply want a roomy shoulder bag that’s comfortable to carry, this theft-resistant bag from Travelon is what I carry…and I love it! It’s the size of a tote but is flexible, allowing you to easily bend it to fit under the plane seat in front of you.

Plus, it carries a lot! The outside zippers are lockable, and it has a detachable shoulder strap. Even without the extra strap, it fits comfortably over your shoulder and tucks safely under your arm.

Womens Travel Weekend Bag Canvas Overnight Carry on Shoulder Duffel Beach Tote Bag (Black stripe with shoe compartment)

A Cute Weekend Bag

If you like a shoulder bag, this striped weekender is the ticket. The bottom section unzips to reveal a separate shoe compartment, and the main compartment has pockets for all your goodies. It also has a pocket on the back that allows you to slide the shoulder bag securely onto your roller-bag handle.

Amazon Basics Underseat Carry-On Rolling Travel Luggage Bag, 14 Inches, Navy Blue

A Small Roller Carry-On

If you’re looking for a roller bag small enough to fit under the airline seat in front of you, check this one out. It’s small, lightweight, and has several zipper compartments inside to organize your things. If you don’t want to actually carry your carry-on, this one is a good choice.

Ricardo Mojave Hardside Carry-On in Platinum

A Standard Roller Carry-On

If you’re looking for an airline carry-on, this is the one I use, and I love it. It’s lightweight and on spinner wheels, which makes it a breeze to navigate. It has plenty of room for an extra outfit for both of us, plus all of our valuables and other important items. This is what I carry with us when I bring my laptop and photography equipment on cruises.

Final Thoughts On Ideas For Your Cruise Carry-On Bag

If you’re not sure what you shouldn’t pack, check out our post on prohibited items on cruise ships . And if you’d like a handy checklist to help you pack your cruise carry-on, we have one for you!

On the last day of your cruise, keep this bag with you if you leave your cabin for any reason before leaving the ship. A travel companion of mine recently was robbed of jewelry and other items when they left their cruise carry-on in their cabin while going to breakfast before debarking the ship. You never know!

Hope this list helps you pack your carry-on for your next trip. And don’t forget to download our Cruise Carry-On Checklist .

The best cruise ship luggage – suitcases, carry-ons & cross-body bags

Finding your perfect cruise ship luggage pieces.

As cruise travelers, we want sturdy, long-lasting suitcases and bags that are easy to transport and withstand the heavy handling by airline and the cruise line baggage handlers. We also want our luggage to look good, be comfortable, and offer flexible packing options with plenty of compartments and pockets for our travel essentials.

We have listed our favorite luggage set in our essential cruise item list, but luggage does deserve a little more focus. After all, there are many options depending on what type of traveler you are. Often the very minimum we cruise with is one large checked suitcase plus a smaller piece of carry-on cabin baggage containing items such as travel documents, medicine, and a few spare items of clothing. Should our checked luggage go missing, the items we bring in our carry-on will be our lifeline for at least a day or two.

And with the mention of missing luggage, a trackable device attached to your suitcase to quickly locate your bag is a good idea.

When visiting different destinations, you may want to include a backpack or a popular cross-body bag for your shore excursion. You will need to carry your passport, wallet, smartphone, cruise card, and other essentials such as sun cream, a water bottle, and a waterproof jacket.

How we have chosen the cabin luggage pieces below

We travel as a family of four. Two adults and two children. Often our parents join us. And we all have different needs and therefore not the same type of luggage. When contemplating the best bags to buy, the decision is based on a combination of cost and need. Read on to find out which pieces are best for you and your cruise travel companions.

Understanding Cruise Luggage Requirements

Embarking on a cruise is an exciting adventure, and the best cruise luggage can set the tone for a hassle-free journey.

Unlike air travel, cruises offer a unique set of challenges and opportunities when it comes to packing. Understanding these nuances is key to a seamless experience.

Cruise Types and Luggage Needs

  • Ocean Cruises: These are typically longer and may involve a variety of climates and activities. Opt for luggage that offers ample space, yet is easy to handle. A well-sized, durable wheeled suitcase is ideal. Consider the diverse events on board – from formal dinners to poolside relaxation – and ensure your luggage can accommodate outfits and accessories for these occasions.
  • River Cruises : Known for their intimate settings and port-intensive itineraries, river cruises often require less luggage. Space in cabins can be more limited than ocean liners, so a medium-sized, soft-sided suitcase or a duffel bag that can be easily stored under the bed or in a closet is a wise choice.
  • Expedition Cruises: If your cruise is adventure-focused, like those to the Antarctic or Galápagos Islands, durability and versatility are key. Waterproof and rugged luggage that can withstand harsh conditions while keeping your gear safe is essential.

best luggage for a cruise

Size and Weight Restrictions

Each cruise line has its own luggage policy, but a general rule is that each piece of checked luggage should not exceed 50 pounds (23 kilograms).

It’s important to check with your specific cruise line for their size and weight limits. Overpacking not only makes it difficult to maneuver your luggage but also can result in extra charges or logistical issues.

Efficient Packing for Limited Cabin Space

Cruise cabins, especially the staterooms, are known for their efficient, yet limited space. Packing cubes can be a lifesaver in organizing your belongings and maximizing space.

Also, consider multi-functional clothing and accessories to reduce the amount of luggage needed. For example, a scarf that can be used as a beach wrap or an evening shawl saves space and adds versatility to your wardrobe.

Key Takeaways:

  • Choose your luggage type based on the specific cruise type and activities planned.
  • Adhere to size and weight restrictions to avoid extra charges and for ease of handling.
  • Utilize space-saving techniques like packing cubes and multi-functional clothing.

Packing the right luggage for your cruise can significantly enhance your travel experience.

By understanding the unique requirements of cruise travel, you can focus on the stunning views and exciting adventures ahead, with your belongings neatly and conveniently packed away.

Types of Luggage: Pros and Cons

Selecting the ideal type of luggage for your cruise is crucial for comfort and convenience.

Here’s a rundown of the different types of best cruise luggage and their advantages and disadvantages to help you make the best choice for your cruising adventure.

Hardshell Suitcases

  • Durable and offer better protection for valuables.
  • Water-resistant, a plus for poolside or unpredictable weather.
  • Often come with TSA-approved locks, enhancing security.
  • Can be heavier, adding to weight concerns.
  • Rigid structure limits how much can be packed.
  • Can be more challenging to store in smaller cruise cabins.

Softshell Luggage

  • Flexible material allows for squeezing in extra items.
  • Usually lighter than hardshell, easier to handle.
  • Often come with external pockets for easy access to documents or snacks.
  • Less protective against impacts and water.
  • Durability can vary greatly depending on material quality.

best luggage for cruise

Wheeled Suitcases

  • Easy to transport, especially larger or heavier bags.
  • Available in both hardshell and softshell varieties.
  • Ideal for navigating through large cruise ships and terminals.
  • Wheels and handles eat into the weight and space allowance.
  • Can be difficult to maneuver in crowded areas or over uneven surfaces.

Duffel Bags

  • Lightweight and versatile, often with a spacious interior.
  • Can be easily stored in tight spaces.
  • Suitable for more casual or adventure cruises.
  • Carrying them can be taxing, especially without wheels.
  • Lack of structure can lead to disorganized packing.

Managing Luggage on Board

Once you’re on the cruise ship, managing your luggage effectively can enhance your onboard experience.

From embarkation to disembarkation, and everything in between, here are some tips to handle your luggage smoothly during your cruise.

Navigating Embarkation and Disembarkation with Your Luggage

  • Embarkation: Upon arrival at the cruise terminal, luggage is often taken by porters to be delivered to your cabin. Ensure all bags are clearly labeled with your cruise details. Keep essential items and valuables in a carry-on.
  • Disembarkation: The night before disembarking, you’ll typically leave your packed luggage outside your cabin. In the morning, you’ll retrieve them in the terminal. Again, keep essentials and valuables with you.

Storing Luggage in Cruise Cabins

  • Space-Saving Tips: Under the bed is the most common storage spot for large suitcases. Make use of closets and drawers for unpacking clothing and other items to keep your cabin tidy and spacious.
  • Organizing Your Space: If you travel with multiple bags, consider nesting smaller bags within larger ones when empty to save space.

Tips for Keeping Your Luggage Secure Onboard

  • Use the Safe: Store valuable items like passports, jewelry, and electronics in your cabin’s safe.
  • Cabin Locks: Ensure your cabin door is always locked when you are away. Although security is high on cruise ships, it’s still wise to be cautious.
  • Luggage Locks: For added security, use TSA-approved locks on your luggage, especially when leaving it outside your cabin for embarkation or disembarkation.
  • Utilize porter services for ease during embarkation and disembarkation.
  • Be strategic about packing so that essentials are always with you.
  • Make the most of cabin storage to keep your living space organized and comfortable.
  • Prioritize the security of your valuables throughout the cruise.

Managing your luggage efficiently on a cruise ship is crucial for a stress-free experience.

By planning ahead and utilizing the facilities and services available on board, you can ensure that your focus remains on enjoying your vacation, rather than worrying about your belongings.

Specialty Cruises and Luggage Considerations

Cruising isn’t one-size-fits-all, and the same goes for luggage. Specialty cruises, such as adventure cruises or luxury voyages, have unique requirements that can influence your choice of luggage.

Understanding these nuances ensures that your luggage choices enhance, rather than hinder, your cruise experience.

Adventure Cruises (e.g., Antarctic Expeditions, Galápagos Islands)

  • Luggage Needs: Durable, weather-resistant, and capable of protecting gear in rugged conditions.
  • Recommended Type: Waterproof duffels or backpacks with multiple compartments for gear organization.
  • Considerations: Pack for varying weather conditions and potential outdoor activities, such as hiking or kayaking. Lightweight, compressible luggage can be advantageous.

Luxury Cruises

  • Luggage Needs: Stylish yet functional, with an emphasis on quality and design.
  • Recommended Type: High-end hardshell suitcases or designer softshell luggage with advanced features like built-in garment sections.
  • Considerations: You may need space for formal wear and accessories. Luggage that aligns with the luxurious aesthetic of the cruise can enhance your overall experience.

Family Cruises

  • Luggage Needs: Versatile, spacious, and family-friendly.
  • Recommended Type: Large wheeled suitcases for adults, and fun, manageable options for kids (like ride-on suitcases or themed backpacks).
  • Considerations: Organizational features are key, with separate compartments for each family member’s belongings. Durability to withstand the rigors of family travel is also important.
  • Match your luggage type to the specific demands of your cruise style.
  • Adventure cruises call for rugged, weather-appropriate gear.
  • Luxury cruises pair well with high-end, stylish luggage.
  • For family cruises, opt for spacious, durable, and kid-friendly options.

Selecting the right luggage for a specialty cruise is about more than just packing; it’s about ensuring your gear complements the unique adventures you’ll embark on.

Whether braving the elements on an expedition cruise or indulging in the elegance of a luxury liner, your luggage should be a reliable travel partner tailored to your specific journey.

Luggage Care and Maintenance

Proper care and maintenance of your luggage can significantly extend its lifespan, ensuring it remains a reliable travel companion for many cruises to come.

Here are some essential tips for keeping your luggage in top condition.

Cleaning and Storing Your Luggage Post-Cruise

  • Cleaning: After your trip, clean your luggage to remove dirt, stains, or salt residue. For hardshell cases, use a mild soap and water solution; for softshell, check the manufacturer’s instructions – some may be machine washable.
  • Storing: Store your luggage in a dry, cool place. Avoid damp areas which can lead to mold and mildew. If space is limited, consider storing items inside your luggage.

Tips for Maintaining and Extending the Life of Your Luggage

  • Regular Checks: Periodically check your luggage for any wear and tear, especially the wheels, handles, and zippers. Early detection of issues can prevent them from worsening.
  • Repairs: Address repairs promptly. Many luggage brands offer warranties or repair services. For minor issues, local repair shops can often fix zippers or wheels.
  • Protection: Use luggage covers or protective films for hardshell cases to prevent scratches and scuffs.

Dealing with Common Luggage Issues

  • Broken Wheels: If a wheel breaks, check if it’s covered under warranty. Replacement wheels can sometimes be purchased and replaced at home.
  • Damaged Handles: Handles are prone to damage due to rough handling. Many can be easily replaced with spare parts from the manufacturer.
  • Worn Zippers: Keep zippers working smoothly by occasionally running a pencil (graphite) over them. If a zipper breaks, a repair shop can usually replace it.
  • Proper cleaning and storage are crucial for maintaining luggage.
  • Regular maintenance checks can extend the life of your luggage.
  • Address repairs promptly to keep luggage functional for future trips.

Taking good care of your luggage ensures that it remains durable and functional for your travel needs.

Regular maintenance not only keeps your luggage looking great but also prevents the inconvenience and expense of premature replacement.

How To Choose The Best Cruise Luggage For Really Easy Family Travel

Cruising with your family can be a lot of fun, but it’s important to make sure you have the right luggage for the trip. Luggage can be expensive, and you don’t want to waste your money on pieces that won’t hold up, that are too heavy to carry, or that are too large to fit in your stateroom comfortably.

cruise bag designs

Here are some tips on choosing the best cruise luggage for your family. By following our guide, we’ll help you find pieces that are durable, lightweight, and work well for cruise ship travel. (We also provide some specific recommendations in the last section!)

Best Cruise Luggage: Factors To Consider When Choosing

When it comes to packing for a family cruise, the options can seem endless. But when it comes to choosing the best luggage for a cruise, there are a few key factors to keep in mind. Durability, weight, size, and internal storage space are all important considerations, but so is price. You don’t want to break the bank on luggage, but you also want pieces that will last and hold up well during your trip.

Beyond that, think about your specific itinerary and what type of luggage will be most convenient for you. If you’re traveling to a tropical destination, for example, you’ll likely want something lightweight and beach-friendly that can hold all of your swimwear and sandals. If you’re going on an Alaskan cruise, you might need something to protect your sweaters and rain jackets and that’s large enough to handle bulky clothes. You’ll also want to consider what you will be wearing in the evening on your cruise .

cruise bag designs

Ask yourself what you’ll be bringing to get a sense of how much space you’ll need, and reference the cabin size before making your purchase so you don’t end up with luggage that’s too big for your stateroom.

An important consideration when choosing luggage for a cruise is durability . If your travel involves multiple legs, it will be handled by a wide range of people on many occasions and circumstances. At airports, cabs, hotels, and cruise terminals.

If possible, try to choose pieces that will withstand being dropped or knocked around by baggage handlers. Also, something that will still look decent after your trip is done. Rather than stained, dented, and scratched.

cruise bag designs

Consider the weight of your luggage. The lighter your luggage, the easier it will be to carry.

Heavier bags will cause your shoulders and neck to fatigue more quickly, which can be especially problematic if you’re doing a lot of walking during your trip.

Also, if you’re flying as part of your travels, the heavier the bag, the fewer items you will be able to pack without incurring additional charges on your checked bags .

Storage space

When deciding how much storage space to get in luggage that you plan to take on a cruise, consider the length of your trip, how much you plan to pack, and the climate of your destination. Another factor is the size of your items. Bulky items will take up more space than small items. If you have a lot of bulky items, you’ll need a bigger bag with more storage space.  Eg., beach packing vs Alaska packing .

If you’re going on a short trip, you can get away with a smaller bag. But if you’re going away for an extended period of time or traveling to a colder climate, you’ll need to pack a larger volume of clothing and accessories.

Ultimately, it’s important to choose a bag that’s big enough to fit everything you need but not too big or heavy that it becomes cumbersome to transport. Check out our guide on what to pack for a cruise .

cruise bag designs

Most cruises last a week or more, which means you will need to pack enough clothing and toiletries for the duration of your trip. You’ll also want to consider what activities or excursions you plan on doing while on your cruise.

You might think that you won’t need as many clothes on your cruise because it is mostly spent at sea, but the reality could be quite different. You will likely be changing more than once a day (for at least some if not all of your cruise days). Even if most days are lazy hours by the beach or pool, you’ll still find yourself donning fresh threads each evening, either for dinner or some other fun nightlife activity.

Maneuverability

For ease of use, consider purchasing luggage that has wheels or bags that can be carried using an adjustable shoulder strap. This will make it easier to navigate airports and cruise ships when you’re juggling other items like passports, carry-on baggage, travel documents, and kids.

Interior organization

To make unpacking easier, choose pieces of luggage that have mesh dividers in their compartments. This allows you to keep your items separated and easier to find.

Affordability

Another factor to consider is how much it costs.

Often times low-cost suitcases don’t have many of the features that high-end ones do, like self-repairing zippers or sturdy wheels that can handle bumpy roads or cobblestone streets. However, there are some inexpensive options out there that will get the job done without damaging your wallet too badly. Shop around until you find one that fits your needs. And check out our specific recommendations below.

What Kind of Luggage Is Best For a Cruise?

For our family cruises, we have found the following types of luggage to be the most useful: suitcases, duffel bags, garment bags, carry-on bags, and something specifically designated for port travel. Let’s take a closer look at each of these.

Suitcases are typically the centerpiece of your luggage choices. Broadly, there are two key distinguishing factors among suitcases: (1) wheels vs no wheels; and (2) hardside vs. softside.

Wheels vs No Wheels

It’s strongly recommended that you get suitcases with wheels. This feature will make it significantly easier to manage your luggage through airports, hotels, and cruise ship terminals.

There are a few reasons why the best suitcases for cruises have wheels. It’s much easier to navigate through airports and onboard the ship with a roller bag than it is to carry a suitcase. Likewise, it’s much more comfortable to walk long distances with a roller bag than it is to carry a heavy suitcase.

That said, rolling luggage is typically more expensive than luggage without wheels. And, sadly, sometimes wheels break off during travel, which then makes them very awkward to drag around.

Types of Wheels

When it comes to rolling luggage, you have two options – regular wheels and spinner wheels.

The main difference between wheeled luggage and spinner luggage is that spinner luggage can rotate 360 degrees, whereas regular wheeled luggage cannot. This is a major advantage because it means that you can easily move spinner luggage in any direction, even when it’s full. And this makes it much easier to navigate around corners and obstacles.

Also, wheeled luggage is great for smooth surfaces like airport walkways and hotel hallways but can be a bit difficult to maneuver on uneven surfaces or cobblestones.

Hardside vs Softside

Hardside luggage : This type of luggage is durable and scratch-resistant, making it ideal for cruises. It typically comes with a TSA lock, which keeps your belongings safe and secure.

There are pros and cons to using hardside luggage for cruise travel. On the pro side, hardside luggage is generally more durable and can better protect your belongings than softside luggage. It can withstand more wear and tear. It’s also less likely to get damaged during transit, either by being thrown around or by having items stacked on top of it.

Hardside suitcases also provide a bit more stability than soft sides, so your belongings are less likely to move around inside the suitcase during transport. Additionally, hardside luggage tends to be easier to keep clean than softside luggage.

On the con side, some people find that hardside luggage is more difficult to pack into tight spaces than softside luggage. It typically does not have outside pockets for storing small travel items. It also typically weighs more out of the box which can be an issue if you’re concerned about overall luggage weight limits.

Softside luggage is able to conform to the odd shapes of cruise ship cabins, maximizing storage space. But a soft-sided bag won’t offer as much protection against knocks and bumps as a hard one will. The fabric on some softer bags can be damaged more easily than that on harder cases. And it can get ripped or stained.

Duffel Bags

A rolling duffel bag is a great piece of cruise luggage.

We always take a rolling duffel bag on a cruise along with suitcase(s). We have found that having at least one piece of luggage be a wheeled duffel helps make better use of the space under the bed. Because the duffel is typically much narrower, it can easily fit alongside another regular suitcase. Or, in the instances where the cabin attendant has stored stuff under the bed, it can easily share space with that as well.

Duffel bags are roomy and flexible so that you can fit more stuff in there than a regular suitcase. Plus, they offer plenty of organizational options via side sections and exterior pockets.

Best Cruise Luggage | older model High Sierra drop bottom duffel

Key factors to look for in a rolling duffel?

Size: It should be big enough to hold lots of stuff but not so big as to trigger oversize luggage charges. Structure: You want one with some built-in organization with easy-to-access compartments.

Over the years, our favorite duffels have been the drop bottom duffels with a U-shaped opening and several exterior storage compartments.

A drop-bottom duffel is a great option for cruise packing. The top compartment can be opened up like a traditional duffel, while the bottom suitcase-like opening has its own flexible divider that separates it from what’s inside your other luggage.

Duffel bags are versatile and can be used for both checked and carry-on baggage. They are typically lightweight and affordable.

Garment Bags

If you plan to participate in formal nights or otherwise dress up for dinner at times, then a rolling garment bag will be a great selection for your cruise luggage.

A rolling garment bag is designed specifically for hanging clothes, so they won’t get wrinkled during travel like they would be folded up in a suitcase. And if you need to pack extra items, such as shoes or accessories, larger garment bags come with extra compartments for ample storage.

If you get a large one, you should be able to pack all of your family’s dressy clothes in the same bag. The one we use can hold clothes for two formal nights, including accessories.

Carry-on Bags

You’ll want to pack a “carry-on” bag even if you’re not traveling by plane.

Ideally, you will pack a carry-on bag that can do double duty as a cruise bag for embarkation day . That’s a small day bag with some key items that will tide you over as you’re waiting for your luggage to arrive at your cabin. That’s also where you would store valuables and medications. (Check out our other useful embarkation tips! ).

Look for a bag with several compartments or pockets that will make it easier for you to stay organized. The exterior should feature some type of scratch-resistant material, such as nylon, which keeps marks from appearing when rubbed against other pieces of luggage in transit. Many carry-ons feature wheels for easy transport between the airport and ship docks.

Luggage for Port (A Day Bag)

Assuming you plan to leave the ship and engage in some activities in port, you will need a day bag. If you are traveling with kids, it’s a good idea to have a family day bag. Although different family members may have personal items that they cart around themselves, one primary can house all of your family essentials for your day in port . For instance, items like towels, sunscreen, water, snacks, etc.

It doesn’t necessarily mean one person carries it around all day; it can be a shared responsibility. But the benefit of having one primary consolidated bag is that it makes it easier to make sure that you have all the key items that you need for the day in one place.

The type of bag doesn’t really matter. It just needs to be big enough to hold everything that you need. If you are going to the beach, a big beach-style tote works nicely. If you have a city day plan, a backpack-style bag may be easier and more efficient. And there are also hybrids between the two styles.

What Size Luggage Should You Bring?

You probably know that cruise cabins have limited space. Whatever luggage you bring with you will need to be capable of being stored in your cabin. So keep the size of your cabin in mind when it comes to choosing the perfect suitcase for cruising.

Ideally, you will be able to nest some pieces of luggage inside others, for instance, if one is smaller in size than another or can be squished into a larger piece because it’s flexible/soft. You can buy luggage sets that have been specifically designed to nest.

In terms of actually storing your luggage in your cabin, the best luggage for cruise ships are pieces that can be stored in a location where they are not taking up valuable floor space or closet space. So, ideally, it will fit under the bed.

Recommendations for the Best Cruise Luggage

Hardside suitcases, samsonite centric 2 hardside expandable luggage.

Samsonite Centric 2 Hardside Expandable Luggage

View on Amazon

Samsonite Centric Hardside Expandable Luggage is our top pick for the best suitcases for a cruise. We think that either the Centric or the Centric 2 would make a good choice because the differences between them are extremely minor. (The most significant difference is that the carry-on in the Centric 2 line has a built-in power outlet.)

These suitcases feature a scratch-resistant polycarbonate shell, four multi-directional spinner wheels, and a full-zip interior divider and cross straps to help you stay organized.

Not to mention, it also has generous expansion capability for when you need more space for purchases, souvenirs, or other clothes. And this suitcase comes with cleverly designed side-mounted TSA locks to help deter theft.

These suitcases come in a range of distinctive colors. We chose Caribbean Blue for our personal collection.

Notably, Samsonite Centric hardside luggage sets have been well-reviewed by cruise passengers . Based on our recent personal experience, we agree with the consensus view of our fellow cruise travelers:

  • Very lightweight – all of our suitcases were filled without ever triggering airline overcharges.
  • Wheels roll exceptionally well, even on the carpet. These suitcases don’t require any significant force to push. My youngest child was able to maneuver it with ease. And I was able to roll two large suitcases with one hand (held back to back) – for an extended trek through the airport.
  • These pieces nest together inside the largest suitcase, which fits easily under the cabin bed.

The best cruise luggage will fit easily under the bed in your stateroom.

2023 Note : We have now had this particular set for about two years and have used it for both cruise and non-cruise vacations. These pieces have been quite durable. All the wheels and handles still work perfectly, and the outsides have remained free of scratches and dings!

Samsonite Omni PC Hardside Expandable Luggage

Samsonite Omni PC Hardside Expandable Luggage

This luggage set is quite similar to the Centric and Centric 2 luggage, except that it has a strikingly different visual design and is usually a little cheaper. Like the Centric cases discussed above, the Samsonite Omni is constructed from scratch-resistant polycarbonate material, has four multi-directional spinner wheels, a mesh divider and cross straps, and the same TSA side-mounted locks.

All of the suitcases in this set are also expandable and come with push-button telescopic handles.

This luggage set is also very popular with cruise travelers. It receives dozens of rave reviews from veteran cruisers .

Of particular note, the Omni 2 suitcases receive high marks for being lightweight, their ease of maneuverability, interior organization, and those nifty TSA locks.

Amazon Basics 3-Piece Set Hardside Spinner

Amazon Basics Hardside Spinner Luggage

The price of the AmazonBasics 3-Piece Set Hardside Luggage may initially give one pause. The cost of the entire set is less than the price for a single suitcase in many luggage lines. But this luggage definitely gets the job done at a value price.

The extra-thick ABS hardshell and scratch-resistant black finish keep your items safe, while the four double spinner wheels provide 360° of smooth-rolling movement in any direction, making it easy to navigate through crowded airports or busy streets.

AmazonBasics Luggage for Cruise

The sturdy telescoping handle ensures comfortable maneuvering, while the securely mounted short handle provides an easy grab-and-go option when you’re in a hurry. And when you need a little more packing space, the luggage expands by up to 15%.

This economical purchase has simple and limited organization. The most significant drawback is the side with the straps.  Basically, the gaps between the straps are too wide and the straps themselves are too flexible. If you open the suitcase from the wrong side – which is inevitable because there is no easy way to tell which side is up – many of the items will fall out.  Since we always use packing cubes, this hasn’t been a true disaster, but it can get annoying.

cruise bag designs

We have found that our AmazonBasics luggage has held up very well over time, and it offers great value. This is also a set that’s highly rated by cruise passengers .

The highlights of this luggage set:

  • The set nests well. Each piece fits inside of the other.
  • The wheel roll smoothly and you can easily transition back and forth between using two and four wheels.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size luggage is best for a cruise.

The best place to store your luggage in your cruise cabin is under the bed, so you want luggage pieces that will fit there. Typically, if your suitcase is less than 13 inches in height, it should fit. This will accommodate your average large suitcase (28″-30″).

Do cruise ships XRAY your luggage?

Yes. All luggage that comes aboard a cruise ship – whether carry-on or checked – will be scanned. Your carry-on items will be scanned through an x-ray machine similar to what you find at the airport.

Do Cruise Lines search your luggage?

It depends. All luggage will be scanned. If something draws attention, then those individual pieces may be searched by security personnel. Any contraband items discovered will be confiscated (e.g., alcohol, firearms). Depending on the individual cruise line’s policy, some confiscated items may be held by security and returned to you at the conclusion of your cruise.

Closing Thoughts

The best cruise luggage will be lightweight, large enough to hold all of your belongings, and durable enough to sustain being handled by numerous people. Ideally, you should be able to nest the pieces inside one another and fit everything neatly under the bed. FAQ: 8 Tavel Bags and Luggage to Bring on a Cruise in 2023

Here are answers to some common questions about types of travel bags and luggage to bring on a cruise in 2023.

How much luggage should I bring on a cruise?

The amount of luggage you can bring a on cruse depends on several factors.

  • Check Cruise Line Policies: Start by checking the specific luggage policies of your chosen cruise line. Most cruise lines have guidelines on the number and size of suitcases or bags allowed per passenger.
  • Cruise Duration: Consider the length of your cruise. For shorter cruises (3-5 days), one or two medium-sized suitcases may suffice. Longer cruises may require additional luggage to accommodate clothing and personal items for the duration of your trip.
  • Climate and Destinations: Think about the weather at your cruise destinations. If you’re visiting multiple climates, you may need a variety of clothing, which could impact your luggage needs.
  • Onboard Activities: Consider the activities you plan to engage in during the cruise. If you have formal nights or plan to work out, pack accordingly. Some activities may require specific clothing or equipment.
  • Cabin Space: Remember that cruise cabins are typically compact, so you’ll want to ensure your luggage can be stored comfortably in your cabin. Under-bed storage or closet space can be utilized for this purpose.
  • Travel Needs: Besides clothing, consider essentials like toiletries, medications, travel documents, and any specific items like snorkeling gear or formal attire for special events.
  • Laundry Services: Many cruise ships offer laundry services, so you can pack lighter and plan to do some laundry during your voyage.

In general, it’s recommended to pack efficiently, choosing versatile clothing items and coordinating outfits to make the most of the space available. Ultimately, the amount of luggage you bring on a cruise should be tailored to your individual preferences and the specific requirements of your trip.

Can I ship my luggage to and from my cruise?

Yes, you can ship your luggage to and from your cruise, and it can be a convenient option for many travelers. Here are some important details to consider:

1. Shipping Services: Several companies and services specialize in shipping luggage to and from cruise ports. They typically offer door-to-port and port-to-door services, meaning they can pick up your luggage from your home or a designated location and deliver it directly to your cruise ship or vice versa.

2. Convenience: Luggage shipping can be particularly helpful if you have large, heavy bags, or if you’re traveling long distances to your cruise departure point. It can save you from the hassle of lugging your luggage through airports and to the cruise terminal.

3. Timing: When shipping your luggage, it’s crucial to plan well in advance. Be sure to coordinate the pick-up and delivery schedule with your cruise departure and return dates. It’s recommended to allow sufficient time for your luggage to reach the destination before your cruise.

4. Cost: While luggage shipping can offer convenience, it often comes at an additional cost. Make sure to inquire about the pricing and any potential fees associated with this service when booking.

5. Luggage Insurance: Confirm whether the shipping service provides insurance for your luggage in case of loss or damage during transit. It’s advisable to purchase additional insurance if necessary.

6. Check Cruise Line Policies: Always check with your cruise line to understand their specific procedures and any requirements related to shipping luggage. Different cruise lines may have varying rules and recommendations.

7. Documentation: Ensure that your luggage is properly labeled and includes all the necessary cruise documents and identification tags to avoid any complications during boarding.

In summary, shipping your luggage to and from your cruise can be a practical option for those looking to streamline their travel experience. It can save you time and effort, especially when dealing with large or bulky items. However, it’s important to plan ahead, understand the costs involved, and coordinate the process carefully to ensure your luggage arrives on time for your cruise.

Are steamer trunks a good thing to bring on a cruise?

While steamer trunks possess a certain vintage charm, they may not be the most practical choice for modern cruise vacations. Here are a few factors to consider when deciding whether to bring a steamer trunk:

  • Size and Weight: Steamer trunks are typically large and heavy, which can be a drawback when dealing with airline weight restrictions or limited cabin storage space on cruise ships. Modern luggage options often prioritize lightweight designs and ease of handling.
  • Mobility: Maneuvering a heavy steamer trunk can be challenging, especially in crowded port areas, narrow cabin hallways, and when boarding or disembarking from the ship. Smaller, wheeled suitcases or travel bags offer greater mobility.
  • Storage in Cabins: Cruise ship cabins are designed to accommodate more compact luggage. Steamer trunks may not fit comfortably under the bed or in the available closet space. Check with your cruise line to ensure your trunk will fit in the cabin.
  • Packing Efficiency: Steamer trunks don’t typically offer the same level of organization and compartmentalization as modern luggage options, which can make it harder to keep your belongings neat and accessible.
  • Versatility: Cruise vacations often involve various activities, both on and off the ship. Modern luggage types, such as carry-on bags and backpacks, can be more versatile for excursions, day trips, and onshore adventures.

That said, if you’re a collector or enthusiast, and you have a particular fondness for vintage luggage, you can bring a steamer trunk for its aesthetic appeal and historical charm. Just be prepared for some logistical challenges and consider using it as a decorative element in your cabin rather than relying on it for practical storage.

In most cases, travelers find that modern luggage options, which prioritize convenience, organization, and portability, are better suited for the demands of contemporary cruise vacations.

Choosing the Best Suitcase for Your Cruise preview image

A smooth and fun cruise isn't just about picking great spots to visit—it's also about the luggage you pack. Picking the right suitcase for your cruise means you're all set for anything, whether it's fancy dinners, relaxing by the pool, or heading out on an adventure. Choosing wisely means every move, from speeding through airports to taking on adventures, becomes a seamless part of your unforgettable cruise narrative.

Key Features to Look for in a Cruise Suitcase

Open suitcase on the floor with neatly packed travel essentials: clothing, a sun hat, art magazine, and toiletries, indicating an upcoming journey.

Size and Capacity

When weighing your luggage options, considering the length of your cruise and your travel needs is crucial. Different sizes have their perks, depending on how long you're staying and what kinds of activities you've got planned.

Most cruise lines have their own specific luggage rules about size and weight for both carry-on and checked bags, which we’ll explore in more detail later in this guide. Choosing a suitcase that's roomy, fits in your cabin, and meets cruise line rules ensures a worry-free trip.

Durability and Material

The right suitcase must stand up to the rigors of travel, from rough handling during boarding to exposure to the elements. Choosing luggage made from materials that can withstand a bit of rain and sea spray is a must for keeping your stuff dry and safe. Knowing how boarding and luggage drop-off work can also help you pick durable, secure luggage for a worry-free cruise.

Features like spinner wheels and telescopic handles make it easy to move through busy terminals and go on excursions smoothly. These features help make travel effortless, allowing you to easily roll your bag along. However, it's best to steer clear of luggage with unstable handles to prevent travel hassles.

🛟 Pro Tip : Make sure to always conduct a thorough check of your suitcase by rolling it across different floor types, including wooden, tiled, and carpeted areas. Keep in mind that when picking a roller bag it’s best to choose one with embedded wheels, which will ensure extra protection against the rough airport and cruise port terrain.

Storage and Organization

The key to a relaxing, stress-free vacation is to organize your cruise travel gear, and that starts with an efficient packing system. It’s important to look for suitcases with built-in compartments and the option for expandability. Suitcases with interior straps and mesh pockets are great for securely storing smaller items, and making sure everything stays in its place during a bumpy trip.

A suitcase that can zip open for more room is a lifesaver for fitting in all those souvenirs and last-minute pack-ins.

🛟 Pro Tip : Be sure to assess the durability of your luggage's zippers, particularly at the corners, to avoid the inconvenience of your items spilling out during transit.

Keeping your valuables secure is a top priority. Suitcases equipped with TSA-approved locks and anti-theft features offer peace of mind, ensuring that your belongings are safe, whether in transit or in your cabin. A TSA-friendly combination lock is tough, secure, and can easily be opened by TSA staff, ensuring a quick and hassle-free trip through airport security.

Types of Suitcases Suitable for Cruises

Choosing the right travel gear, from suitcases to travel bags, is key to a smooth cruise experience. Whether you opt for soft-sided luggage, hard-sided luggage, wheeled duffle bags, or decide between carry-on and checked luggage, each type of travel bag serves unique needs on your journey. These choices ensure you're well-equipped for packing, ship navigation, and exploring destinations, making your cruise adventure both comfortable and efficient.

Soft-Sided Luggage

Designer soft sided luggage with a distinctive brown checkered pattern and orange accents, equipped with wheels and an extendable handle.

Soft-sided luggage offers flexibility and can often fit into tighter storage spaces, making it a popular choice for cruise cabins. For those expecting to buy souvenirs or return with extra items, soft-sided luggage is ideal, offering flexibility to squeeze in any extra items. However, it's important to weigh the potential trade-off in protection against rough handling and weather elements.

Hard-Sided Luggage

Two durable hard shell suitcases, one silver and one black, designed for cruise travel, isolated on white background.

If keeping your stuff safe is a top priority, hard-sided luggage really steps up with unbeatable protection from knocks and bad weather, keeping your electronics and breakables snug and secure.

🛟 Pro Tip : Make sure their sizes meet your cruise line's needs, since these cases don't offer the same adaptability as their soft-sided alternatives.

Wheeled Duffle Bags

Wheeled duffle bags combine the easy mobility of wheeled luggage with the storage flexibility of a duffle bag, offering a versatile solution for cruisers. However, they might not offer the same organized layout and protection you get with traditional suitcases.

Consider Carry-Ons vs. Checked Luggage

The choice between carry-on and checked luggage depends on the length of your cruise and your packing habits. Carry-on bags are the luggage you'll carry with you onto the ship, holding onto them until your room is ready. Meanwhile, your checked luggage will be taken care of by the staff before you board and delivered to your room once it's available.

Shorter cruises or minimalist travelers might find a carry-on or one checked bag sufficient, while longer voyages or those requiring more varied attire may necessitate an additional piece of checked luggage. Even so, it's a good idea to have a small carry-on bag with you on embarkation day for your essentials while your checked luggage is being managed by the cruise line.

Packing Tips for Cruise Travel

Vintage suitcase packed with travel necessities: colorful clothing, flip-flops, sunscreen, sunglasses, towel, and passport for a cruise vacation.

Maximize Space and Minimize Wrinkles

🛟 Pro Tip : A few smart packing moves, like rolling your clothes and using packing cubes, can really help you fit more in your bag and keep those pesky wrinkles at bay. These packing tricks are great for making sure you've got all you need, all while keeping your clothes looking sharp.

Pack Versatile Clothing Options

Packing clothing that can transition from day to night or from casual to formal settings is essential for the diverse activities offered on a cruise. Versatile pieces like scarves or reversible clothing can add variety to your outfits without taking up additional space. Additionally, research the weather and conditions of your cruise destination beforehand to inform your packing choices and ensure you're well-prepared for any adventure.

Keep Your Cruise Essentials Close

Remember to pack essential items such as medications, sunscreen, and swimwear in easily accessible places, like your carry-on baggage. In addition to those essentials, don't forget to include a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated during your daily activities. Packing these items in your carry-on or personal bag ensures you're prepared for every part of your cruise adventure from the moment you board.

Consider Onboard Activities and Shore Excursions

Take some time to find out the onboard activities available on your cruise ahead of time. Pack attire that aligns with your cruise's dress code, often ranging from casual to formal.

For shore excursions, lightweight and comfortable clothing suitable for the climate and activities of your destinations is key, as well as appropriate footwear. If you plan on spending time near the ocean, consider investing in a pair of durable sandals.

🛟 Pro Tip : To safeguard your valuables during excursions, opting for a water-resistant backpack is essential to protect your items from water damage. For travel involving extensive walking, a compact rolling duffel is versatile, as you can switch between carrying and rolling. However, keep in mind that it's not ideal for cobblestone streets and other rough terrains.

Research and Adapt

Lastly, you can't dig into your cruise itinerary enough – it's super important. Getting a handle on the local culture, weather, and lay of the land at your destinations can make a big difference in what you decide to pack.

Top Suitcase Recommendations for Cruisers

Woman in a summer outfit walking towards a cruise ship with rolling hard-sided luggage, palm trees and a clear sky enhancing the tropical ambiance of the port.

Choosing the right luggage for your cruise is about matching your specific travel needs with the features that suitcases offer. We're more about what your suitcase can do than the name on it. Just make sure whatever you pick ticks the boxes for being tough, easy to move around, good for keeping things organized, and secure. For instance:

For Short Cruises: A durable, hard-sided carry-on with spinner wheels and TSA-approved locks can offer the convenience and security needed for shorter journeys For cruises ranging from 3-5 days, cruise lines typically recommend bringing one suitcase per passenger, weighing no more than 50 pounds (22.6 kg).

For Extended Voyages: A larger, expandable, soft-sided checked suitcase with multiple compartments ensures you have ample space and organization for all your essentials. For cruises exceeding 7 days in length, cruise lines suggest a maximum of 2 suitcases per passenger, with the same weight limit of 50 pounds (22.6 kg) per item.

Checked Luggage Size Restrictions

It's important to make sure that your suitcase not only abides by the cruise line's weight restrictions, but their size restrictions as well. The size restrictions, for both short and extended voyages, are as follows:

  • Carnival luggage restrictions: 24x16 inches (width by depth; length is not taken into consideration)
  • MSC Cruises : 35x30x16 inches (height by width by depth)
  • Norwegian , Princess , Celebrity Cruises & Royal Caribbean size restrictions are not explicitly outlined

When selecting your cruise luggage, consider how each feature will serve your travel style and the nature of your cruise. The best luggage for your cruise balances practicality with the joy of travel, ensuring every journey is as smooth as the sea on a calm day.

Set Sail with the Right Suitcase

The journey to a hassle-free and enjoyable cruise experience begins with selecting the right suitcase. By prioritizing features like durability, mobility, storage, and security, you can choose luggage that not only meets your travel needs but also enhances your cruising adventure. Remember, the best suitcases for cruises are the ones that allow you to focus on the joy of travel, secure in the knowledge that your belongings are well-protected and organized.

Start your adventure today, ensuring every detail, down to your suitcase choice, sets the stage for an extraordinary cruise experience. With your ideal luggage in tow and the world's most stunning destinations awaiting your arrival, now is the perfect time to plan your journey with Cruisebound .

Cruise gifts under $25

Looking for inexpensive cruise gifts for a small birthday present, secret Santa gift, or cruise stocking stuffer? All of these cruise gifts are small enough to fit in a small space, but can make anyone’s cruise so much more enjoyable.

Magnetic hooks

Did you know that cruise stateroom walls are made of metal? These strong magnetic hooks can hold everything from hats and jackets to bags. They’re a great way to keep a cruise cabin neat when there’s limited storage.

GREATMAG Magnetic Hooks Heavy Duty, 100 lbs Strong Hooks for Hanging, Magnet with Hook for Cruise, Grill, Fridge, Pack of 6

I like to use mine to hang damp swimsuits to dry when it’s inconvenient to use the clothesline in the shower. (Like when people need the shower for showering.)

Lounge chair towel clips

It can get windy up on the pool deck, so these lounge chair towel clips come in handy to keep towels in place. They also make it clear that your lounger is reserved when you take a dip in the pool or the hot tub.

ECROCY Beach Chair Towel Clips on Cruise, 8 Pack Large Clamps,Clothes Pegs,Beach Towel Holder to Keep Your Towel from Blowing Away,Heavy Duty and in Bright Colors

The clips are also great to take along on any beach-bound shore excursions.

Power strip with USB

Cruise staterooms never have enough power outlets! With all of the electronic devices that we need to keep charged, it can be a struggle to find a spot for everyone to plug in.

Cruise Power Strip No Surge Protector with 2 USB Outlets - Cruise Essentials for Carnival, Celebrity, Princess, Norwegian, Holland America, MSC & Major Cruise Lines in 2024 & 2025 (White)

A non-surge protecting power strip will give your cruiser enough outlets and USB ports to keep everything powered up. Plus, it’s cruise-friendly! Surge protecting power strips are usually prohibited on cruise ships.

Stateroom bathrooms have no ventilation, so odors tend to permeate the entire cabin. Yuck. Poo-Pourri traps the odors in the toilet bowl before they have a chance to hit the air.

Poo-Pourri Before-You-Go Toilet Spray, Original Citrus, 2 Fl Oz - Lemon, Bergamot and Lemongrass

The travel-size pump spray is TSA friendly, and the non-toxic formula is made with essential oils and natural compounds.

Battery-operated night light

Cruise staterooms can be pitch-black at night, especially the inside staterooms. A battery-operated nightlight gives off just enough light to safely get to the bathroom without tripping over someone’s shoes.

ZEEFO Retro LED Night Light PIR Motion Sensor Light,Activated Step Lighting Lamps,Indoor/Outdoor Battery Operated Lamp Sensitive Portable Moving Table Lamp for Kids Room,Hallway(Round Shape)

I like the motion-sensor feature on this model (which can be switched on or off). Plus, it doesn’t take up a valuable electrical outlet, and can be placed on a nightstand or carried around.

Wrinkle release spray

Cruise lines prohibit passengers from carrying on irons or clothes steamers, so it can be difficult to keep clothing looking neat and pressed.

Downy Wrinkle Releaser Spray, All In One Formula, Removes Wrinkles, Static and Odors, Crisp Linen Scent, 33.8 Fl Oz, Pack of 2 + Travel Size Spray

Wrinkle release spray quickly removes wrinkles from most fabrics. Just hang the item, spray lightly, and tug out any wrinkles. Plus, it adds a light scent so it’s possible to re-wear things if there isn’t a laundry room for guests.

Waterproof luggage tag holders

Cruise lines require each piece of checked luggage to have one of their printed labels on it. They instruct passengers to fold the paper label and then use a stapler to attach it to suitcases and bags.

Highwind Cruise Luggage Tags for Suitcases | Compatible w/All Cruise Lines | E-tag Holders Zip Seal&Steel Loops | ID Badge | Waterproof Clear Cruise Tags (8pk, Clear)

A water-damaged tag (or one that falls off!) means that cruise line staff won’t know which room the bag belongs to. I use reusable waterproof luggage tag holders to protect my bag labels.

Make sure you pick the right style for the cruise line. The ones above will work for Princess, Carnival, Costa, Holland America, P&O, and Norwegian. Royal Caribbean and Celebrity have different size tags.

Pickpockets and thieves love it when a cruise ship comes into port. They often prey on unsuspecting tourists whose money and valuables aren’t secured.

DAITET Money Belt - Passport Holder Secure Hidden Travel Wallet with RFID Blocking, Undercover Fanny Pack (Black)

Help your cruiser avoid being a target by giving them a money belt . It’s not just useful for hiding cash! Their passport and smartphone can also fit inside.

This belt also includes RFID blocking technology which helps to prevent scammers from obtaining personal information from credit cards and IDs.

Collapsible water bottle

Single-use water can be expensive on cruise ships and in port, not to mention the environmental impact of all those plastic bottles.

Collapsible Water Bottles 2 pack Travel Water Bottle Portable Hiking Water Bottle with Leak proof Twist Cap 500ML Reusable BPA Free Silicone Water Bottles (Style1, Black+Purple)

Tap water on cruise ships is perfectly safe to drink. A collapsible water bottle is the perfect size to pack in a suitcase, and will save your cruiser money while out on shore excursions.

This two-pack is made of BPA-free food grade silicone and comes in a variety of colors, including some fun multicolor designs.

Packable shopping bags

Many cruise ports are shopping meccas, and a set of lightweight packable shopping bags can hold all those souvenirs—up to 50 pounds per bag! They fold down into a little pouch, the perfect size for tossing in a purse or beach bag.

BeeGreen Sea Turtle Gifts for Women Foldable Reusable Grocery Bags Shopping Bags for Groceries Cute Holiday Bags with Handles Large Cloth Gift Bags Heavy Duty Bulk 6 Pack Lightweight

The bags also do double-duty as laundry bags (I hang mine in the stateroom closet) or to keep shoes separate from clothing in a suitcase.

My smartphone gets quite a workout when we’re in port. Pulling up maps and directions, looking up restaurant reviews, and checking in at home often leaves me with a dead battery! A small power bank will charge it right back up.

Anker PowerCore 5,000mAh Portable Charger, Ultra-Compact 5K External Battery with Fast-Charging Technology, Power Bank for iPhone 15/15 Plus/15 Pro/15 Pro Max, iPad, Samsung Galaxy and More

It works to charge tablets as well. I make sure to bring mine on those long coach drives when the port is far away from the city destination. No more worries that reading or playing a game will drain the battery.

Reef-safe sunscreen

Did you know that most commercial sunscreens contain ingredients that can be harmful to marine life? Some chemical sunscreen ingredients like oxybenzone and octinoxate can kill coral and damage coral reef ecosystems.

Badger Reef Safe Sunscreen, SPF 40 Sport Mineral Sunscreen, 98% Organic Sunscreen Ingredients, Broad Spectrum, Water Resistant, Zinc Oxide Sunscreen, Unscented, 2.9 fl oz

Going without sunscreen is a dangerous idea when swimming or snorkeling, so if your cruiser will be in the water, get them some reef-safe sunscreen .

Waterproof phone pouch

Your cruiser can enjoy the ship’s pool or a shore excursion to the beach while keeping their phone handy and safe. These waterproof phone pouches come with a detachable neck strap and fit phones up to 6.8″ diagonal.

JOTO IPX8 Waterproof Phone Pouch Case, Underwater Dry Bag for Phone Protector for iPhone 15 14 13 12 11 Pro Max, Galaxy S24 S23 S22 Ultra Pixel to 7' Cruise Vacation Essential -2 Pack, Black

And yes, the touchscreen works through the clear plastic window. They can even be used to take photos underwater!

Over-the-door organizer

Give your cruiser the gift of more storage space in their stateroom. An over-the-door organizer can corral toiletries and accessories on the back of the bathroom door.

Cruise On Large Mesh Over Door Hanging Organizer 15 Pockets - White Cabin Organization Shoe Holder & Cruise Essentials Storage (24'x60')

This model is flame-retardant, as is required by some cruise lines. I keep the packaging with mine to prove to my stateroom steward that it meets the rules.

Note: Disney Cruise Line has banned over-the-door hooks because they might mar the finish of the doors.

Packing cubes

Organizing and packing a suitcase for a cruise is so much easier with packing cubes . I keep my items inside when I unpack, and just place them on the closet shelves or drawers. The see-through mesh makes it easy to see what’s inside each cube.

eBags Classic Medium 3 Piece Packing Cube Set (Aquamarine)

The gentle compression of the packing cubes also results in less-wrinkled clothing.

Travel Board Games

One of my favorite things to bring on a cruise is a travel-sized board game, like Tile Lock Scrabble . Its slightly smaller size makes it easy to pack, and the tiles won’t shift if the board is bumped – perfect for playing on the ship or on a plane.

A travel board game, or a fun card or dice game makes an inexpensive but appreciated gift for a friend, coworker, or family member that’s going on a cruise.

Tile Lock Scrabble,2 to 4 players

Cruise gift ideas for a holiday swap ($25-$50)

Lots of us participate in a holiday gift swap each year. Whether it’s a Secret Santa or Kris Kringle, or your family (like mine!) draws names for a gift swap, sometimes it’s tough to find just the right gift and still stay within the swap budget.

All the cruise gift ideas in this section are right in the price range of most gift swap budgets.

Travel safe

On the pool deck or at the beach, it’s never a good idea to leave valuables out where they can be stolen. This mini travel safe is roomy enough to hold money, jewelry, and most phones while swimming.

SAFEGO Portable Indoor/Outdoor Lock Box Safe with Key and Combination Access (Green)

It attaches easily to a lounge chair with a flexible metal strap. Your cruiser will love knowing that their valuables are secure while they’re enjoying the water.

Apple AirTag

If your cruiser has an iPhone, they’ll appreciate one of these handy little AirTag devices to keep track of their stuff when they travel.

Apple AirTag

I like to clip one inside each of my suitcases using an inexpensive silicone holder (much cheaper than the overpriced ones sold by Apple) to make sure my checked bags make it on the plane and then on the cruise ship!

Full-face snorkel mask

Does your cruiser enjoy snorkeling? Then they’ll love the 180° view they’ll experience with this full-face snorkel mask . The mask features adjustable straps, an easy drain valve, and anti-fog coating. It even has a GoPro mount to capture all of those underwater adventures!

ZIPOUTE Snorkel Mask Full Face, Full Face Snorkel Mask Adult and Kids with Detachable Camera Mount, Snorkeling Mask 180 Panoramic View Anti-Fog Anti-Leak Dry Top Set with Adjustable Straps(Black L/XL)

I’ve saved far more than I spent on my set by not having to rent snorkel equipment in port. Plus I feel better about not putting a germy rental snorkel in my mouth.

Mid-range gifts for cruisers ($50-$100)

Is your budget for your cruise gift a bit more generous, but you don’t want to completely splurge? I have plenty of ideas for cruise gifts in the $50-$100 range.

Anti-theft travel bag

Pickpockets love it when tourists are carrying bags that are easy to get into. An anti-theft travel bag will keep money and valuables safe from thieves. With locking clips on the zippers and slash-proof straps, this bag will prevent pickpockets from accessing its contents.

Travelon Anti-Theft Heritage Tote Bag, Pewter, One Size

I use mine as my cruise carry on bag for embarkation day, as well as for shore excursions.

Packable rain jacket

I used to take an ugly plastic poncho with me when I cruised, in case I was caught in the rain in port. I didn’t feel like taking a bulky raincoat. But plastic ponchos are ridiculously ugly.

Eddie Bauer Women's Packable Rainfoil Jacket, Waterproof, Deep Eggplant, X-Large

My favorite packable rain jacket folds into its own pocket, and doesn’t take up much room in a shore excursion bag. Much nicer looking than an ugly poncho! It also comes in men’s sizes here .

Is your gift recipient cruising to an area with lots of wildlife? On our recent cruise to Alaska , I was so thankful we had binoculars. From the deck of a cruise ship, what looked like tiny moving dots to the naked eye suddenly became a mama bear and her cub, or a pod of porpoises.

SkyGenius 10 x 50 Binoculars for Adults Powerful Full-Size, Clear Durable Binoculars for Bird Watching Sightseeing Wildlife Watching Traveling Stargazing with Low Light Night Vision

These full-size 10 x 50 binoculars feature low-light night vision for evening viewing, and have a shock-resistant, non-slip rubber coating.

A backpack for active shore excursions

Is hiking or a bike tour on your cruiser’s agenda? A quality backpack would be a much-appreciated gift. This 26-liter pack is the perfect size to fit all the essentials for an active shore excursion.

THE NORTH FACE Jester Everyday Laptop Backpack, Astro Lime AI Blossoms Print/TNF Black, One Size

A comfortable, functional backpack makes all the difference when taking an active shore excursion. Padded shoulder straps and a hip belt and sternum strap ensure that weight is distributed evenly.

Splurge gifts for cruisers ($100+)

Do you want to get something really great for a loved one who’s going on a cruise? These cruise gift ideas are a little more pricey, but your cruiser will love them!

Expandable hardside suitcase

Is your cruiser still using that beat-up suitcase from a high school trip abroad? Bring them into the modern era of travel with a new expandable hardside rollaboard .

Samsonite Omni PC Hardside Expandable Luggage with Spinner Wheels, Checked-Medium 24-Inch, Caribbean Blue

This sleek rollaboard is slim enough to easily slip under a cruise ship bed, but roomy enough to fit all the essentials. Plus it’s made of scratch-resistant polycarbonate, so it’ll stay beautiful trip after trip.

The 24″ suitcase comes in a range of eleven colors, and has over 17,000 five-star reviews on Amazon.

Noise-canceling Bluetooth headphones

Mr. SBC and I each have a pair of Beats Studio3 headphones , and we wouldn’t cruise (or fly on a plane!) without them. They pair easily with any smartphone or tablet, and the noise-canceling feature is amazing at blocking out crowd noise.

Beats Studio3 Wireless Noise Cancelling Over-Ear Headphones - Apple W1 Headphone Chip, Class 1 Bluetooth, 22 Hours of Listening Time, Built-in Microphone - Red

I love to use mine to listen to music on our balcony, or to listen to an audiobook while lounging on the pool deck. Throw in a subscription to Audible , and your cruiser will be all set to relax!

GoPro camera

The newest and best GoPro camera yet, the HERO12 Black is a fun gadget to take along on shore excursions! I love that it’s waterproof so I can use it to document my snorkeling adventures.

GoPro HERO12 Black - Waterproof Action Camera with 5.3K60 Ultra HD Video, 27MP Photos, HDR, 1/1.9' Image Sensor, Live Streaming, Webcam, Stabilization

A fun feature of the GoPro is its time-lapse video function. I like to set it up to record the view from my window or balcony while I’m having fun around the ship.

Tablet or e-reader

I think there’s nothing more relaxing than sitting by the pool and reading a book. But traveling with bulky paperbacks gets annoying, especially if you’re trying to pack light. An e-reader or tablet is a great gift for any book-loving cruiser.

Wrapping it up

How can you make your cruise gift even more fun? Wrap it in a nautical theme! This gift wrap multi-pack includes a classic navy-and-white anchor wrapping paper, ship’s wheels, and a cute whale pattern.

Cruise gift basket ideas

Can’t decide on just one or two cruise gift ideas? Why not make a cruise gift basket? Instead of using a boring wicker basket, give your gifts in a packable pop-up laundry basket that they can use during their cruise.

Is your cruiser going to a tropical destination? Or do they have a summer cruise planned? A cute beach bag makes the perfect packaging for a warm-weather cruise gift.

MIYO Beach Bag, Mesh Beach Bag, Women's Tote Bag, Beach Mesh Bag, Large Capacity Beach Organizer with Zipper and 9 Pockets-Blue

Another fun cruise gift basket alternative is a lightweight packable backpack . This would be a great way to pack some cruise essentials for a kid who’s going on a cruise.

Cruise packing list: the essentials chosen by experts.

This cruise packing list includes all of the essentials – plus items you didn't know you needed.

Essentials to Pack for a Cruise

Downloadable Cruise Packing List

Packing for any trip takes some planning, but cruise vacations present a unique challenge – particularly due to limited stateroom storage space and sparse (or overpriced) options for purchasing accidentally forgotten items.

To help you decide what to pack for a cruise, we've curated a list of essentials recommended by cruise experts who regularly sail the high seas. Download the U.S. News Cruise Packing List pictured above to reference while you pack, and read on to learn more about the recommended items and where you can purchase them if needed.

  • For packing and planning
  • For travel and embarkation day
  • For the cabin
  • For the ship and shore excursions

Find your perfect cruise

Carry-on bag

Regardless of whether you bring checked luggage, you'll need some type of carry-on bag . Since checked bags need to go through security as they do at airports – and because you may need to wait for your stateroom to be ready, just like at a hotel – you'll want to be able to access any necessities pre-cruise. These might include a swimsuit, sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat for the pools; medications; a bottle of water; and your smartphone, of course. You'll also want to keep your credit card , passport, and any other important documentation or valuables close by. A carry-on backpack works especially well since it can double as a day bag for shore excursions.

Checked bag

While you'll likely want to bring a checked bag, consider sharing one with your ship mate(s) to maximize stateroom storage space. Or, consider bringing medium-sized luggage, such as the The Medium by Away , for checking in.

Read: The Best Checked Luggage Options

Garment bag

While many cruises are less formal these days, a garment bag can still be handy for keeping select garments wrinkle-free (since clothing irons are prohibited on cruise ships). Top-rated options include the The Garment Duffel by Halfday and the Briggs and Riley Baseline 22" Carry-On 2-Wheel Garment Bag , both of which double as traditional luggage. If you pack your luggage right, you can make this your only suitcase, in addition to a carry-on bag.

Packing cubes or vacuum-sealed bags

Packing cubes are one of the best ways to organize your belongings for travel – especially in a tight cruise ship cabin. Top-rated options include the Veken packing cubes on Amazon (usually priced around $20) and all of the Pack-It Sets by Eagle Creek. The Pack-It Starter Set is especially ideal for cruising since it includes a garment folder designed to minimize wrinkles in clothing. Some cruisers also swear by vacuum-sealed bags , even though they can be a bit more tedious to pack.

Carry-on caddy

Ashley Kosciolek, senior cruise writer at The Points Guy, recommends a carry-on caddy , particularly if you're flying to your embarkation point. "I have a fabric sleeve that slides down over the telescoping handle on my carry-on to provide pockets for my passport, phone, coffee – all the things I used to have to juggle during check-in."

Digital luggage scale

The compact Etekcity scale – approximately $10 on Amazon – can weigh bags up to 110 pounds and help you avoid overweight baggage fees.

Bungee cord

"Especially for travelling with the family, I use a bright-green bungee cord to strap multiple pieces of luggage together," says Aaron Saunders, senior editor at Cruise Critic. "It's a lifesaver when boarding trains or disembarking ships, particularly when you ' re maneuvering a stroller and a little one around, too."

Luggage tracker

A luggage tracker isn't just useful for air travel. Attach one to your checked cruise luggage to see when it has arrived in your stateroom (or if it's stalled at security). Chris Gray Faust, executive editor at Cruise Critic, doesn't go anywhere without her Apple AirTag after her luggage got stuck in Vancouver for over a week last June. "My AirTag use has expanded beyond my checked luggage, too. I also have AirTags in my handbag, my carry-on, my keychain and my wallet."

Cruise insurance

Due to the unpredictable nature of travel, cruise insurance can be a wise purchase ahead of your voyage. Travel policies can cover unforeseen expenses such as trip interruptions and medical emergencies.

While a passport is often required for cruising, rules can vary depending where you're traveling. Determine whether you need a passport for your upcoming cruise ; if you do, triple-check that you have it packed the day of departure.

Credit cards and local currency

When cruising internationally, consider getting small amounts of each country's currency to have on hand in port. Depending where you go, some local markets may only accept their own country's currency, not U.S. dollars or credit cards. It's also nice to leave cash gratuities for cab drivers, tour guides or servers; in the European Union, 1- and 2-euro coins are convenient and appropriate tips. In ports with vendors that do accept credit cards, be sure to carry a Visa or Mastercard , as some shops and restaurants do not take American Express .

RFID wallet

It's important to protect your travel documents with an RFID wallet like the TIGARI Passport Holder or the ZOPPEN RFID Travel Passport Wallet , the latter of which can hold multiple passports for a family. "Thieves and hackers can steal your credit card information just by using skimming devices," explains Jill Schildhouse, a cruise expert and U.S. News contributor who always travels with her RFID wallet. "And because your wallet wasn't even touched, you won't know it happened until you see your credit card statement."

Medications

Pack more than enough of your prescription medications as well as any over-the-counter medicines you'll need, just in case you encounter an itinerary change or travel delay. While some travelers find it easiest to bring personal medicines in their prescription bottles, others find travel pill boxes to be especially helpful for organization. The Sukuos Weekly Pill Organizer is a well-rated option, with detachable boxes for each day as well as compartments for morning and evening medications.

Sheet masks

Since flying can be so drying for the skin, Faust likes to use sheet masks. "My first step the night before I board (because you should always fly in a day early) is to hydrate with a sheet mask (usually from a Korean brand like Ballon Blanc or FaceTory )," she says. "If I'm meeting up with a friend, I bring an extra sheet mask so our trip starts out feeling a bit like a spa day!"

Magnetic hooks

A surprising fact: Cruise ship cabin walls are made of metal, which means you can optimize your storage space by hanging some of your belongings on magnetic wall hooks. The hooks are perfect for holding bulky coats or boots if you're traveling to a colder climate. You can also use them for wet gear on expedition ships and adventure cruises, or for drying out bathing suits after days at the beach or pool. Purchase a set of magnetic hooks for less than $10 on Amazon .

Like hotels, cruise ships can only provide so many hangers. Bring a few extras from home or pick up a pack from your local dollar store. You might also try packable hangers .

Wrinkle release spray

Whether or not you bring a garment bag, a travel-size bottle of wrinkle release spray, such as Downy Wrinkle Releaser spray , is useful to have on board. If you combine a spritz or two with the steam from your shower, you should be able to smooth out some of the wrinkles in your clothing.

Laundry detergent

"If you don't want to pay for laundry service or spend precious time in the self-service laundry room, bring a small bottle of laundry detergent like Woolite to wash key items in the sink: underwear, bras, quick-dry hiking shorts, bathing suits, etc.," recommends Schildhouse. "Every cruise ship shower has a retractable clothesline you can extend to drape the clothes over while they dry. This can also help cut down on the number of items you need to pack."

Over-the-door organizers

Over-the-door organizers with clear or mesh pockets allow you to find your feminine hygiene products, makeup, jewelry and other small items quickly – without having to hunt through multiple drawers or a tight stateroom closet. It's a good idea to purchase a two-pack like this option by Simple Houseware Store (available on Amazon), since you can also use one to store shoes and maximize floor space.

Poo-Pourri bottle against white background.

Courtesy of Poo-Pourri

It goes without saying, but to say it anyway: A toilet spray like Poo-Pourri is a must for your cruise packing list. Any smell – pleasant or not – will travel quickly in small staterooms with small bathrooms. Buy a travel-size bottle to keep in your cabin.

Shampoo and conditioner

Cruise experts agree it's best to bring your own shampoo and conditioner in travel-size bottles, as most cruise ships don't provide separate shampoo and conditioner anymore; instead, they offer all-in-one dispensers. Colleen McDaniel, editor-in-chief at Cruise Critic, likes to pack her shampoo and conditioner in the popular Cadence Capsules , noting she also uses them for another essential: sunscreen. "These capsules are easy to fill, never leak and have clear labels, which you can customize," she says.

Wine or Champagne

Most major cruise lines allow each guest to bring one to two bottles of wine or Champagne on board, while some luxury cruise lines allow even more than that. Disney Cruise Line also gives guests the option to bring a six-pack of beer instead of wine or Champagne. Be sure to consult your cruise line's policies when packing for your trip.

If you plan to bring wine or Champagne, you'll likely need a corkscrew . While some cruise lines may prohibit corkscrews, others allow them onboard; check your cruise line's policy before sailing. Bringing wine with a twistable cap may be a good alternative.

Portable humidifier

Cruise ship cabins can feel dry – especially in the colder months. A portable humidifier like the GENIANI Erie (around $25 on Amazon) can provide some relief. At about half a pound, this USB-powered device will fit neatly into your checked bag or carry-on luggage. The travel humidifier features two mist settings and has an automatic shut-off option, plus a night light to help you see around your cabin in the dark.

International travel adapter or converter

You'll likely need a travel adapter, since cruise lines homeported in international locales may have different electrical sockets and voltage strengths than you're used to in the U.S.

McDaniel recommends the OneWorld65 Travel Adapter . "I've used a lot of different travel adapters over the years, but this is my favorite. It charges up to six devices at once, has USB and mini-USB options, and works in over 200 countries," she says. "While many cruise ships have U.S. outlets, most usually also have European outlets. This adapter lets me take advantage of that outlet I'd otherwise ignore." She also notes that while cruise lines are getting better about having more outlets on their ships, it never feels like enough to keep your phone, camera battery, tablet, watch, headphones/earbuds and laptop charged (times two or more if you're traveling with others).

Sound machine

Cruise experts agree a sound machine can be helpful for blocking out the sound of late-night partiers returning to their staterooms (or your snoring spouse). Schildhouse likes the LectroFan Micro 2 for cruising. "It plays non-looping white noise and doubles as a speaker to play tunes while you get ready for dinner."

Tech organizer

Open Bagsmart Electronics Organizer fills with cords against white background.

Courtesy of Bagsmart

A tech organizer like the BAGSMART electronics organizer case – available on Amazon for about $20 – can store all your cables, plugs, SD cards and earphones in one zippered, compact bag that will fit easily in your carry-on luggage. Despite its small size, it can also hold bulkier items like a small laptop charging cord.

First-aid kit

A first-aid kit is a good thing to have on hand no matter where you go. You can make your own using supplies you already have at home, or buy a premade first-aid kit on Amazon for about $20. While all cruise ships have medical facilities, it's useful to have these items with you on shore excursions, especially those involving active adventures.

Hand sanitizer

Regularly washing your hands and/or using hand sanitizer is essential to staying healthy while traveling, especially on a cruise ship. Stock up on a few travel-size bottles of hand sanitizer (less than $2 each at Walmart) ahead of your trip. If you're looking for something with less alcohol that's also less drying, check out Babyganics Alcohol-Free Foaming Hand Sanitizer .

If you're a parent, you know that your infant or toddler needs a very specific size – and in some cases brand – of diapers, which may very well be unavailable to you on your cruise ship or in the ports of call. Bring more than enough diapers to play it safe at sea.

Most cruise lines also require that non-toilet-trained infants and toddlers wear swim diapers in the children's water play areas. For the sake of sanitation, kids must be toilet-trained to use the pools on cruise ships.

Many cruisers like to personalize their cabin with stateroom door decor. Not only is it a fun tradition, but decorating the door can make it easier to locate your room, too. You can find lots of fun decor ideas on Pinterest as well as Amazon.

" Duct tape is a life-saver in many situations," says Kosciolek. "I primarily use it to attach my printed luggage tags, but it's also great for mending clothing issues on the fly and fixing broken luggage until you can get it back home."

"As a parent, I like to bring lanyards with sleeves so my kids can wear their keycards and not lose them," says Erica Silverstein, senior cruise editor at The Points Guy. "We hang them on the magnetic hooks I put on the wall, so they don't get lost in the cabin either."

Sea-Bands pack and bands in case against white background.

Courtesy of Sea-Bands

If you're prone to (or think you may be prone to) motion sickness on cruise ships, put a pair of Sea-Bands on your cruise packing list. These soft wristbands use acupressure to prevent and minimize nausea and vomiting on board, and they are a reusable, drug-free alternative to traditional anti-nausea medications. You can purchase Sea-Bands on Amazon or at most drugstores.

If you need something a bit stronger than Sea-Bands (or to use in conjunction with them), Dramamine remains a tried-and-true solution for both preventing and treating sea sickness. Choose the Less Drowsy formula to avoid getting sleepy, and consider the chewable tablets (dye-free) if traveling with kids who are prone to queasiness. Many travelers like Bonine as a remedy for sea sickness as well.

Mix-and-match clothing

Pack a variety of mix-and-match items, also known as a capsule wardrobe, for your cruise. To do this, choose a base color – black or navy blue – for your wardrobe. Next, pack plain, neutral-colored items, then add a few patterned items to the mix. Remember to include a variety of styles (T-shirts, long-sleeved shirts, pants, shorts, dresses, rompers and jumpsuits) and also consider reversible clothing and outfits that can easily transition from day to night.

Sports jacket or blazer

Adam Coulter, executive editor of Cruise Critic UK & Australia, recommends packing a sports jacket or blazer. "While cruise lines are getting more casual, what happens if you get that last-minute invite to meet the captain, or there's a meet and mingle where you want to look put together? A jacket will always elevate your elegance (even if you're wearing a T-shirt underneath)," he says. If you're in need of a travel blazer, Bluffworks has some well-rated options; the Gramercy , in particular, gets great reviews.

Themed party attire

Some cruise lines host themed voyages or parties on select nights where passengers can dress up to participate in the fun. You'll want to review your cruise itinerary before you go so you're prepared for the festivities. Bring your buccaneer gear if you're sailing aboard Disney Cruise Line; ships host fun events like Pirate Nights, pirate-themed dinners and a "Pirates in the Caribbean" show. On "The Love Boat"-themed cruises offered by Princess Cruises , pack your platform boots, glittery dresses, bell-bottom pants and halter tops for the line's 1970s-inspired disco party on the deck. No matter the theme, you can't go wrong with a couple of captain hats .

Travel wrap

A travel wrap is a versatile accessory that's useful for any trip – even more so on a cruise ship where it can get chilly when the sea breeze picks up. Available in nearly 10 different colors, J.Crew's Oversized Cashmere Wrap is a timeless staple, albeit a bit of an investment; for something less expensive but well rated, try this off-brand pashmina shawl on Amazon .

Packable jacket

Courtesy of Patagonia

If you're cruising to a cold weather destination such as Alaska, you'll need something heavier than a travel wrap, but not so bulky that it requires additional luggage. Consider a packable jacket that folds easily and compactly; travel experts highly recommend the Patagonia Nano Puff Jacket .

Packable hat

If you're headed to the Caribbean or another warm weather destination, you'll want a beach hat to protect your scalp and face from the sun. This packable straw hat by FURTALK (available on Amazon for about $25) is a stylish women's option that features a broader brim and offers UPF 50 sun protection.

Comfortable walking shoes

Allbirds Wool Runners in pink against neutral background.

Courtesy of Allbirds

Even if you never step foot off the ship, there is still plenty of walking to do between bow and stern. Closed-toe shoes or sandals with straps are safer than flimsy flip-flops when boarding a slippery tender into port (if your ship can't dock directly). Check out our recommendations for the most comfortable walking shoes , which include the popular Allbirds Wool Runners and the ECCO Yucatan Sandals .

Water shoes

Depending on your scheduled shore excursions, you might also need a pair of water shoes. For something that's both functional and fashionable, Crocs' Classic Clogs are a good option. While not totally waterproof, the Native Jefferson is a water-friendly, versatile option.

Versatile heels

"Over the years, I've learned that the key to avoiding overpacking is to bring one neutral pair of low heels that match every single eveningwear outfit I've packed – from flowy pants to dresses," says Schildhouse, who loves her Rockport Tabitha 2-Strap Heeled Sandals . "They have a cushioned footbed and shock-absorbing heel so you can dance the night away in the club, and a 3-inch block heel with traction to keep you steady on your feet even if the ship's rocking a bit."

Reusable water bottle

A reusable water bottle is useful for filling up at water and beverage stations on your cruise ship; it's also a necessity for shore excursions.

Bathing suit

Pack a couple of swimsuits for the pools, hot tubs and any shore excursions.

Swim cover-up

Another must-have for your cruise packing list is a swimsuit cover-up or two. These are great for wearing over your bathing suit during days at sea, as well as on excursions – especially if you're going on a Caribbean cruise . Amazon sells a variety of stylish, affordable cover-ups, and you can never go wrong with a classic white button-down shirt .

Dry bags are useful for shore excursions where you're likely to get wet but don't want the same to be true for your phone, camera and other precious items. "I use the Outdoor Research Unisex Dry Isolation Pack   and have never had so much as a drop of moisture enter it, which is important for me – it keeps my cameras, documents and important items from getting wet," says Saunders, adding that it functions as a great everyday backpack when it's not raining.

If you need more than one dry bag, cruise expert Brittany Chrusciel recommends the Sea to Summit Lightweight Dry Bag Set . "Having these dry bags, in a variety of sizes, means I can bring all my gear along during a Zodiac cruise or snorkeling excursion without having to worry about it getting wet."

Waterproof phone case

A waterproof phone case is also essential, especially if you plan to take photos. The Hiearcool Waterproof Phone Pouches (available in a two-pack) come with a lanyard so you can both protect your phone and wear it around your neck. They are compatible with most smartphones.

"I like to bring collapsible pails, small shovels , inflatable beach toys, a floppy Frisbee or other things to entertain the kids on the beach if we're going to a private island or beach destination," says Silverstein. "If you can inflate your own inner tube, you don't need to rent a floating mat."

Beach towel

"Although cruise lines provide guests with towels to take off the ship on excursions, they are often bulky and sometimes small," explains Chrusciel. "The Surfer Towel folds up to nearly nothing, so it takes up almost no room in your suitcase and is super convenient to pack in a day bag. What's more, its quick-drying technology means that the lightweight fabric won't be soaking wet when you need to pack up for the day and head back to the ship."

Towel clips

"Even though giant plastic towel clips shaped like a flamingo are a bit cringey, they make it easy to find your spot in a sea of sun loungers," says Chrusciel. "They also solve a common cruise problem: keeping your towel securely fixed to your chair while reading or sunbathing."

Reef-safe sunscreen

When choosing a sunscreen, look for something that's reef-safe; not only are these sunscreens safer for the environment, but they're also better for you . The active ingredients in reef-safe sunscreens, also known as mineral sunscreens, are zinc oxide, titanium dioxide or a combination of both. Top-rated mineral sunscreen brands include Think , Badger and Raw Elements , all of which also sell lip balm with sunscreen (another essential at sea).

After-sun lotion

You'll want an extra dose of moisturizer if you've been basking in the sun. COOLA makes an after-sun body lotion that cools and hydrates the skin with aloe vera, agave and lavender oil. Previous buyers rave about this lotion, noting they appreciate that the scent isn't overpowering.

A good book

Sea days are the perfect time to kick back and relax with a book you've been meaning to read. Find an oceanfront lounge chair in a shaded area on the pool deck, or grab a cup of tea and settle into a quiet nook indoors. There's no need to pack more than one book, however, as many cruise ships have libraries.

What not to pack for a cruise

Power strip.

Many cruise lines do not permit power strips as they present a fire hazard, while others allow them as long as they are non-surge-protected. Instead of a power strip, purchase a portable charger such as this highly rated one by Anker , which can power up multiple devices at once. This can be especially useful for shore excursions. When packing for your cruise, also think about your luggage: If it has an included charging port, you may not even need to purchase an additional charging block.

Weapons and restraints

Firearms, handcuffs and the like are not permitted on cruise ships. This rule also includes toy guns on most cruise lines.

While most major cruise lines allow guests to pack a limited amount of wine or Champagne per person, they do not permit hard liquor. Of course, those of age can purchase cocktails at any of the bars on board.

Household appliances

Irons and steamers are not permitted on cruise ships, which is why the aforementioned garment bags, wrinkle release spray and packing cubes are recommended for keeping clothing tidy and neat. Coffee makers and mug warmers are also prohibited.

While you can technically bring you own, it's not necessary as hairdryers are available in every bathroom on most ships.

CBD and marijuana

CBD that's derived from hemp and contains 0.3% THC or less is legal at a federal level. However, each state interprets and enforces this law differently; for example, many states require a prescription for it. Due to the ambiguity of the laws, most cruise lines continue to ban CBD in any form.

Marijuana remains illegal under U.S. federal law, which means you cannot bring it on a cruise ship – even if you're legally able to purchase it in your home state for recreational or medical use.
