FULL REVIEW: Chicco Bravo Trio Travel System

As a mom of three, I’ve tried my fair share of wagons, strollers, travel systems, and double strollers – and the Chicco Bravo Trio Travel System is the first that I spent over four weeks debating on what to purchase before I actually spent the money.

Yup. Even when I shopped for my  4-seater stroller wagon  I didn’t take this long to make my decision (but, we all know how that turned out – you can watch my thoughts  on the Wonderfold here ). But, with the stress of a third baby and past experience with purchases, I needed a quick minute to debate.

Luckily, Target swooped in with a 30% off sale and I snagged it! Since you’re reading this with me, I’m gonna work on the assumption that you too are considering this Chicco travel system. So, let’s break it down and talk about the pros, the cons, the features, and if I would buy it again.

The Chicco Bravo Trio Travel System Full Review

I’ve always been a Graco girl and this stroller was really the first stroller/car seat that I purchased outside of the Graco brand. A little under $400, the  Chicco Bravo Trio travel system  comes with a  stroller, infant car seat, car seat base, and the infant seat adapter that also doubles as a snack tray for toddlers.

The specific version that I purchased is the “Camden,” not necessarily picked for it’s color, it was the style that happened to be on sale and I’m always down for a good deal.

That’s your quick overview, now let’s discuss the  deets .

What’s Included in The Chicco Bravo Trio 3-in-1 Travel System?

The Chicco Bravo Trio Travel System is a car seat and stroller combo. It includes the  Chicco Bravo Quick-Fold Stroller  paired with the  Chicco KeyFit 30 Infant Car Seat.  The stroller includes a removable seat and canopy to transform it into an infant seat carrier – but you can still use it as a carrier with both still on the stroller.

The  quick-fold stroller  is designed to be compact and fold with the use of only one hand and stand simply by pulling up the handle to standing. It has large wheels with treaded tires with “all-wheel” suspension to help you navigate outdoors or on uneven ground.

It also has a multi-position reclining seat, child tray with cup holders (doubles as the car seat adapter), and a full canopy with a mesh window in the top. The Chicco Bravo quick-fold stroller is designed for children up to 50 lbs (contrary to what some Amazon listings say).

The  KeyFit 30 infant car seat  comes with their base that is has a single pull system to tighten and install. It includes the standard removable infant head and body support and the large, removable canopy. The minimum weight recommendation is 4 lbs, max weight recommendation is 30 lbs, and the maximum height recommendation is 30 inches. The seat cushion is machine washable.

As of Wednesday, August 30th @ 2:10pm (because I have to be that specific), the  Chicco KeyFit 30 retails at $229.99 and the Quick-Fold Stroller retails at $259.99.  The complete travel system retails for $399.99, giving you  about $90 in savings versus being purchased separately.

What I Think About The Chicco Bravo Travel System

Time for the good stuff – my thoughts, experiences, and opinions… Overall, it’s not a bad travel system. It much easier to navigate and use than my sisters Graco of a similar style and the previous Graco I’ve personally owned. I’m not sure how it holds up to travel systems like the Nuna or  Maxi-Cosi  as I’ve never used either.

I appreciate that I can easily adapt it for my 6-month old and her infant carrier or use it for my two-year-old. My four-year-old has outgrown it and while he’s technically under the weight limit (47 lbs), he is HARD to push.

The adjustable handle bar is great and makes it easy for both me (5′ 11″) and my husband (6′ 1″) to use comfortably. The full canopy with mesh window has also made it easy for us to do a nice, cool set-up during the summer with our portable fan and keep the sun off our little one.

Lastly, the  KeyFit 30 infant seat  is amazing. The car seat base is insanely easy to remove and install, which is awesome considering all three of my children are in some version of a car seat and transferring cars can be a pain in the butt.

Since you’ve heard the pros, we have to talk about the cons:

What I Don’t Like About It…

My main complaint is about the compatibility between the quick-fold stroller and the infant seat. Honestly, when they’re separate, they’re each pretty great – together, it’s a hard mesh. For example, when using the one-handed quick-fold feature of the stroller with the car seat adapter/snack tray on, it’s 10x harder.

Like, took me three times to do before I even got close to folding it right and I’ve owned it for six months and use it frequently by myself (so much so my husband didn’t know how to unpack and pack it until recently). You can get a good idea of how  it folded in my fold and unfold video.

You also need to make sure that the seat is completely reclined for the infant seat to snap in properly, and it’s a bit picky to get settled into the adapter. And if even one of your hands is occupied (groceries, baby, whatever it be), the whole process is harder – which feels very wrong when it’s designed for one hand to folds and unfold.

TL;DR – My Final Thoughts

To sum it up, as a stroller its good. As an infant car seat, it’s great. Together? Not so much.

I would recommend the  Chicco Bravo Trio Travel System  if you can catch it on a deal (which you typically can) or you are looking for something that suits your toddler and infant. If this is your only baby, I would consider some alternatives that are better for infants –  even other Chicco strollers!

A travel system is a stroller and a car seat that click together; getting your whole travel system as one purchase ensures they’ll click together easily without an adapter. This travel system has the option for you to click the car seat on top of the regular seat, or remove the regular seat to save weight. The Chicco KeyFit 30 car seat is a top-rated car seat that is very easy to click in and out of the car and stroller. People like that it’s sturdy and safe, and the harness isn’t too much of a pain to adjust.

This is one of your more affordable travel systems, but it’s still very rich in features: it’s got a height-adjustable handle, a parent tray with cup holders, and a one-hand self-standing fold. Parents love self-standing folds because you don’t have to worry about your folded stroller toppling over or rolling away while you fumble for your keys. The weight is pretty decent, but maybe a tad heavy if you have apartment stairs to deal with. When you lock the car seat into the stroller, the canopies don’t just meet but overlap, creating a relaxing little nap bubble for your baby to be protected from the elements.

So what’s the price of affordability? Well, this stroller isn’t the most maneuverable over rough surfaces, so if you have a ton of bumps in your neighborhood, you might want to look into a stroller with more robust wheels. There are also some complaints about the durability of the materials: the canopy is a tad flimsy, the one-hand fold can get sticky with repeated use, and the wheels can start to squeak after a while. (Pro tip: the squeaky wheel problem can actually be solved with oil).

The Mini Bravo Sport Travel System and Mini Bravo Plus Travel System are lightweight, basic options with less features than other travel systems. The Bravo Primo Trio Travel System comes with the best Chicco car seat, the Fit2 , which has both an infant and toddler position.

The first line-up is the Bravo stroller options, of which you get two choices. Both are basic options but offer affordability. 

Chicco Mini Bravo Sport Travel System

The Mini Bravo Sport Travel System comes with a stroller you can only find in this travel system. It’s a little stroller ready to be user-friendly and make travel a breeze. It works with both the Keyfit and Fit2 line of infant car seats and offers everything you need without the bells or whistles some people don’t need. It can save you some money as the base model set. 

Let’s look at the stroller first.

The stroller folds down with a quick-fold function only found on Chicco strollers. Under the seat, pull the handle up with a single hand, and boom, the stroller is in a standing folded position. It also comes with a handle when in the folded position to make it easy to travel with too!

Storage 

Store your drinks, phone, and keys on the parent tray. Do notice, this stroller does not come with a toddler tray, but that makes this a lightweight stroller and reduces the folding size, too. Otherwise, you get a large storage basket that doesn’t drag on the ground. 

Front Swivel

The stroller comes with front swivel wheels for easier and smoother turns. Maneuverability is a necessity with a stroller loaded down with baby and bags. While the stroller doesn’t come with suspension, at least it’s designed for easy movement and a price ready to fit in most budgets. 

Chicco Keyfit Car Seat 

The only problem with the Mini Bravo Sport travel system is it comes with the base KeyFit . It doesn’t come with any bells and whistles. Also, the car seat can only support 22 pounds. 

Final Thoughts 

For those on a tight budget, this is a fabulous option. It’s a great lightweight stroller ready to do what you need when you need to do it. If you want more features, you need to keep looking as this is the base set without any upgrades. 

Chicco Mini Bravo Plus Travel System

The Mini Bravo Plus Travel System offers an affordable price and everything you need to travel with your infant. You get a lightweight stroller that can carry an infant car set, which is a rare find! Let’s go over the stroller first. 

The Mini Bravo Plus Lightweight Stroller comes in two neutral color schemes. It’s the most lightweight stroller of the options for travel systems and the lightest capable of carrying an infant car seat. Moreover, it’s highly functional and ready to make your life with a newborn super easy. 

Fold this stroller up quickly with the quick-fold function. Under the seat, locate the handle and pull up. It’s that simple and takes just one hand to operate. 

The stroller stands when folded and makes both storage and travel much easier. It also comes with a handle built-in for easy moving too. As it accepts a car seat, you can take the stroller with you everywhere. 

What you will love about this lightweight stroller is it comes with both a parent and a toddler tray. The parent tray even comes with a zippered pocket to keep your phone and keys safe. Add in a large storage basket that doesn’t drag on the ground, and you are all set. 

Canopy 

Peek in on your baby with the extendable canopy. It comes with a zip-open mesh panel that provides both airflow and a way to check in on your baby without disturbing their sleep. With the two positions, you can choose what to block from your baby’s vision. 

Chicco Keyfit 30 Zip Car Seat 

The KeyFit 30 comes with this travel system. It’s a second-tier car seat ready to work for most needs without all the bells and whistles. Take a look below for more information about this car seat. 

The Mini Bravo Plus Travel System comes with a stroller we love and a car seat we like. If it came with the KeyFit 30 Zip to match the stroller’s zipping feature, the set would be a better deal. However, as the stroller is lightweight at 19.6 pounds and capable of holding 50 pounds, it’s a great option for most families. 

Definitely keep this travel system on your list of possibilities. However, if you want a stroller with suspension, this isn’t the choice for you. Choose this if lightweight and travel are your top priority. 

Chicco Bravo Trio Travel System

The next Bravo is the Bravo Trio Travel System . Get a mid-range price with tons of neutral color options. However, it still doesn’t come with a ton of features and the added price doesn’t make sense as this is still basically a base model set. 

One-Hand Fold

Get the coveted one-hand fold with this stroller. You also get a smart fold where the wheels roll inward for the standing fold. Add in a handle for the fold position, and you have the easiest layout possible. 

Convertibility

Next, the stroller converts to a frame stroller to use with the infant car seat. Simply remove the stroller seat to turn it into a frame for the car seat. 

Get both a parent and a child tray to keep you organized on the go. The stroller also comes with an undercarriage basket too. 

Use the rear parking brakes with a single foot touch to keep the stroller where you need it. 

Chicco KeyFit 30 Car Seat 

The Bravo Trio doesn’t inspire a lot of oohs or ahhs as it only comes with the KeyFit 30 . While it isn’t the base model, it doesn’t come with any real extras, either just an extended range of weight allowance. Check out more about all of the car seats below. 

Nothing about this travel system stands out. It’s not the best option on the list but still sells well. It’s great if you want a lightweight stroller, but the combination just doesn’t make our priority list. 

Chicco Bravo LE Trio Travel System

The Bravo LE Trio Travel System is just like the Bravo Trio but with two special additions you will like. Although, the price difference is a little higher than you would like, it’s because you get an upgraded stroller and infant car seat too. 

Cushion 

The first addition is a reversible cushion made of knit/mesh fabric. It offers all-season comfort. However, this is not an infant positioner, just extra padding for any child in the stroller. 

Parent Tray

Also, the stroller includes an improved parent tray. Instead of an open design, this one includes a zippered storage pocket for your keys and cellphone. 

KeyFit 30 Zip Car Seat 

The Bravo LE includes the KeyFit 30 Zip infant car seat. It comes with helpful options and a decent weight limit although it’s not our favorite option. Look below for all of the info. 

While the Bravo LE Travel System is an update from the other options, it’s not enough of an upgrade to warrant the price increase. Once again, this system just isn’t up to the task of impressing parents. However, you do save a little money, but honestly, you can put a better set together, and it would be worth the cost. 

Chicco Bravo Primo Trio Travel System

The Bravo Primo Trio Travel System offers a fantastic value, although the price is higher. Not only does it come with a fabulous stroller but also an incredible infant car seat. Together this dynamic duo is ready to improve infant travel. 

You get Chicco’s signature one-hand fold with the handle for super easy folding. Also, the tires swivel in and stand when folds. Add in the compact size, and you have a super easy stroller to use. 

The tires on this stroller include top-of-the-line treaded tires with foam core. Your baby can sleep and not feel every bump in the road!

Car Seat 

The Bravo Primo Trio comes with the exceptional Fit2 infant car seat. It’s the nicest car seat for infants in the Chicco line and comes with tons of features and advantages you will fall in love with. Look below for all of the information about the car seats available in the travel systems. 

The tires make the Bravo Primo Trio Travel System a great option, but honestly, the best part is the Fit2 infant car seat. With this set, your strolling and car seat needs are taken care of for at least the first two years of your baby’s life! Although, it is one of the more expensive options, that’s because of the car seat, not the stroller. 

Chicco Viaro Travel System  

With the Viaro Quick-Fold Travel System , get all the benefits of both a full-size and jogging stroller without choosing just one. The KeyFit 30 includes all basic features and supports up to 30 pounds.

With the Viaro Quick-Fold Travel System , you can save a little money. Moreover, you get an awesome stroller and a high-quality infant car seat. With so much attention to detail, you may not want to look farther down this list because this stroller is amazing. 

Take a look at all of the features starting with the not-quite jogging stroller design. It’s technically a full-size stroller but looks like a jogging stroller with two wheels close together in the tapered front. Get all the benefits of both full-size and jogging without converting to three wheels. 

Travel Friendly

The frame is both lightweight at 18 pounds and ready to save you space with a compact fold. It can support a child up to 50 pounds even though it’s so light, making this a great option until your child is ready to stop using a stroller. 

Fold the stroller down with a single hand. Now the stroller can stand on its own and take up very little space. No other stroller brand folds down as quickly. 

Next, the stroller provides plenty of storage. Get a parent tray ready to hold two drinks and your other necessities. Also, you get a child tray ready to hold two drinks and snacks or tiny toys too. 

Adjustability 

While the stroller is amazing, it does not come with many adjustable options. For example, the handlebars stay in one spot and don’t move. However, the back reclines with a cord allowing for a multitude of positions for your baby. 

The canopy only has two positions as it only has two panels. Also, the leg rest doesn’t move as well and only allows for one position. 

KeyFit 30 Car Seat 

With this travel set, you also get the KeyFit 30 . It’s a nice car seat for sure, but maybe not the best option available by Chicco. It will however support babies up to 30 pounds and it has everything you need. More about the car seats below. 

Get everything you need from the affordable Viaro Quick-Fold Travel System . It’s a step up from the base options but only just barely as it doesn’t come with any fancy features some parents crave. It will definitely do the job and maneuver easily thanks to the unique design, though. 

Chicco Activ3 Travel System

The Activ3 Travel System is equipped with an adjustable handle, large canopy, and control panel for easier access to safety features. 

Chicco only made one jogging stroller travel system but is a great choice. However, the stroller included in this travel system is slightly different and doesn’t come with the 3D Air Mesh fabric ready to keep kids cool. Otherwise, it’s a fabulous stroller ready to impress. 

Parents with active lifestyles need the Activ3 Travel System . It comes with both a stroller and a car seat to save you money and time searching. Also, it’s the closest to an all-terrain stroller with a built-in suspension system. 

Control Panel

Most Chicco strollers come with foot brakes but the Activ3 comes with a control panel on the front to operate the different features. The control panel keeps everything you need easy access while running with the three-wheeled stroller. 

First, it comes with a swivel lock operation. Second, it comes with a parking brake. Third, the parking brake is also adjustable from the control panel. 

The only thing you operate with your foot is the adjustable suspension with FlexCore. Change this setting if you are switching from rugged to smooth terrain or vice versa. 

Adjustable Handle 

The upgraded stroller also includes three handle positions too. It’s padded and can go up or down to work with both tall or short parents. 

Tires 

Next, the tires on this impressive stroller include treaded rubber with a foam core. If you want air-filled you need to move to the Chicco TRE jogging stroller for even better suspension and tires. 

An extra-large canopy adjusts with a zipper extension to block out the whole world for your child. It even offers a peek-a-boo window allowing you to keep tabs on your child without slowing down. 

Like many of the travel systems, this one includes the KeyFit 30 . It’s a high-quality car seat but and functions perfectly but without the bells and whistles. More about this and the other car seats later. 

The Activ3 Travel System makes life easy for those who go off-road. However, it’s not a great option for those looking for a lightweight stroller who travel often as this stroller weighs 27.5 pounds. Your child will love the comfort, though, including five recline positions so they can nap while you jog.

Chicco Corso Modular Travel System

Both the Corso Travel System and Corso LE Travel System allow you to change the direction of your child’s seat, either facing out or toward you. The Corso LE Travel System also comes with leather handles for a elegant look.

Chicco makes two travel systems in their Corso Modular line. Both come with a variety of great features you will love. Also, the travel systems save you a significant amount of money too! Let’s take a look. 

Corso Travel System  

The Corso Travel System is a modular stroller, which means you can change the direction of the seat. It also supports an infant car seat too. It’s lightweight too compared to the other full-size strollers too at only 23.4 pounds. 

Direction 

With the Corso stroller, you can change the layout of the seat. Choose between the seat facing you or facing out to the world. It’s the perfect option for both infants and toddlers and allows you to keep a closer eye on your infant without using the infant car seat. However, you can use the infant car seat too! 

Next, you get a zip-extend canopy with this stroller too. The three panels allow for extended shade. Also, the mesh panel acts as airflow and a peek-a-boo window too. 

Smooth Strolling

Use FlexCore adjustable suspension and larger wheels for a smoother drive. Chicco has really created a modern stroller with an adjustable suspension. Add in EVA foam for extra cushioning and easy steering. 

The Corso doesn’t just offer a large storage basket but also pocket storage too. Mind you, you don’t get a parent tray or toddler tray with this new modern style, but the pockets keep everything close by, and you get two streamlined bottle pockets built into the basket. 

Get more with this travel system as it comes with the KeyFit 30 Zip . Not only do you get a zipper mesh canopy, but you also get a boot too! Find out everything you want to know about this car set below. 

The Corso Modular Travel System is by far the best and most modern stroller in the Chicco lineup. It’s the one stroller we would pick if we had to choose. Between the low weight, easy fold, and all of the other benefits, it’s the right choice for most families. 

Corso LE Travel System

The Corso LE Travel System stroller only comes with two differences from the Corso. While the two additions are definitely nice, they are by no means necessities. Choose this set if you want luxury. 

The Corso LE weighs a little over a pound more than the Corso. At 24.8 pounds, it’s still lighter than most full-size strollers but weighs more than the Corso. 

Both the parent handles and the toddler bar offer premium leatherette for a rich appearance and a sleek stroller. 

The other advantage is the treaded rubber tires with foam core. It makes for a smooth drive and less bumps for babies to try to sleep through. 

The Corso LE travel system comes with the KeyFit 35 infant car seat. It’s a fabulous option ready to hold more weight and last longer with extra legroom. Get all the facts below. 

Although the Corso LE Travel System looks prettier, it just doesn’t offer enough advantage for the price. Unless you love the leather, it’s really not worth your time. However, it’s definitely a good option, but an LE model should at least come with a parent tray or newborn positioner.

Chicco KeyFit

The Chicco Keyfit is their baseline infant car seat. It’s more than functional but doesn’t come with any of the advantages of the upline options. However, it’s all that you really need from a car seat and more than you may get from a car seat by a different brand. 

One of the major benefits of Chicco benefits is the ease of correctly setting up the base. The base includes a spring-loaded leveling foot to help with alignment and to get the correct angle.

Furthermore, the base includes two bubble levels to help you visualize the accuracy. Add in SuperCinch tightened, and you have an amazingly tight and secure fit. All this with minimal effort. 

Newborn Positioner

When your baby first leaves the hospital, they are so tiny that they need a little extra support. With a high-quality newborn positioner, you can accommodate tiny babies for more comfort and a correct position for safety. 

Pull Harness

Tightening the 5-point harness doesn’t have to be difficult. Chicco car seats come with a one-hand pull for a snug fit. This means you get more safety with less effort. 

Weight 

Finally, the car seat works for babies from 4 pounds to 22 pounds or 0 to 30 inches in height. With this car seat, you will need to move to the next stage sooner as most of Chicco’s car seats go up to 30 pounds and a few even up to 35 pounds. However, it’s the most lightweight at just 9 pounds without the base, making it easier to carry. 

Chicco KeyFit 30 

The KeyFit 30 is the first option up from the KeyFit. It’s not a major upgrade but there are a few noticeable differences. Two upgrades with this option actually. 

First, you get more weight limit with this upgrade. Of course, the price goes up with an increase to 30-pound weight limit from 22 pounds. However, this does come with a slightly higher weight for the car seat itself that weighs 9.5 pounds. 

Color Options

Second, the only other difference is you get more color options with the KeyFit 30. While the KeyFit only has one black option, the next tier up comes with seven options. Most of the options are neutral to blend into your surroundings. 

The last difference is the price, and it’s significant for the minor change of weight and color options. It’s worth the cost, though, but not as worth the upgrade to the next option up. Let’s take a look. 

Chicco KeyFit 30 Zip

Moving up the tier, the KeyFit 30 Zip offers even more options than the previous lower-tier options. The KeyFit 30 Zip offers everything you get with the previous options but with so much more making it absolutely worth the price jump. 

Chicco offers a ventilated canopy with the KeyFit 30 Zip. Not only does the car seat offer ventilated mesh, but you can zip it open or shut hence the name Zip. Babies need ventilation, and moms need a peek-a-boo window to see if their baby is okay, and this offers both. 

No, we aren’t talking about something babies wear on their feet, but a built-in foot and body cover attached to the car seat. The boot creates warmth and comfort without over covering your baby with loose blankets. It’s a much safer option to combatting the cold and the elements. 

Chicco KeyFit 35

With the KeyFit 35 , you get an incredible car seat with massive advantages over the other options in the KeyFit line. It’s price definitely goes up, but stays in the realm of possibilities. What you get for the cost is well worth the bump in dollar signs too as this car seat lasts longer and goes farther. 

Get everything you need and expect from a Chicco infant car seat along with some advantages not found in most car seats. Take a look:

The KeyFit 35 gets its name because it allows for an infant up to 35 pounds instead of 22 or 30 pounds. Moreover, you get extra height range, too as instead of only supporting 30 inches. However, this car seat does weigh a full 10 pounds making it slightly heavier than the previous models.

Benefits keep rolling in with the KeyFit 35 as it offers extended use in multiple ways. First, it comes with an easy-extend headrest that grows with your child. Even better, it doesn’t require any rethreading of the harness!

Second, a new base provides not just more safety but also extended legroom. The anti-rebound bar gives stability and pushes the seat out just enough to provide space without intruding on the front seats. 

Ease of Installation

Installing the KeyFit 35 is even easier to install than the previous models. You still get the SuperCinch tightener and level indicators to help with installation, but you also get the new base with easier to work with lines. Also, you get an easy one-click design. 

Need more reasons to choose this car seat? It’s the only option that can work without the base. That’s right, use the on-the-go belt routing to secure the car seat in any vehicle without the base with three points of contact for security. 

Another advantage is an extendable and double-knit canopy. Not only does it provide privacy, but also sun protection up to 50+ UPF. Sadly, this canopy doesn’t have the zip-out mesh compartment. Otherwise, it’s perfection.  

As with the other Chicco infant car seats, this one includes a newborn positioner. Moreover, it offers support for babies up to 11 pounds, and it’s easy to remove when finished. Now babies as small as four pounds can comfortably enjoy security. 

Chicco Fit2

The last infant car seat you will find in the Chicco travel systems is the best option on the list – the Fit2 . It’s the Rolls Royce of infant car seats as it comes with everything you need and want for your baby. 

Furthermore, it comes with all the benefits of the other seats and can support up to 35 pounds or 35 inches in height, which is more than the other options in height. Although, if you want to go fancier, you can choose the Fit2 Air or the Fit2 LE . Honestly, the only thing you don’t get with this car seat is the zippered mesh on the canopy. 

2-Stage Base

The absolute best feature of this infant car set is it comes with two stages: infant position and toddler position. With the higher weight and height, you can use this car seat longer in the rear-facing direction than any other infant car seat. From there, you can switch to a convertible car seat . 

Smaller babies can use the infant position with the base first. From birth to 12 months, this is the right position. It’s easy to set up with a base designed to make changing the position a breeze. Once your baby teachings 15 pounds, you can switch to the toddler position if your child needs more legroom. 

Converting between the different stages is as easy as lifting a lever. Chicco even clearly marks the different stages right on the base with directions making the change easier. City Street Guides by f.d. walker: A Street Photography Guide to Moscow, Russia

*A series of guides on shooting Street Photography in cities around the world. Find the best spots to shoot, things to capture, street walks, street tips, safety concerns, and more for cities around the world. I have personally researched, explored and shot Street Photography in every city that I create a guide for. So you can be ready to capture the streets as soon as you step outside with your camera!

At over 12 million people, Moscow is the largest city in Russia and second largest in Europe by population ( Istanbul is #1). An urban, cosmopolitan metropolis with more than enough glitz and glam to cater to the elite, but without losing its fair share of Soviet era roughness around the edges. It can be fast paced, brash, busy, and trendy like other big cities, but it has its blend of West meets Russia atmosphere and beauty that provides plenty of unique interest. The Red Square is as famous as it gets, but there’s so much more to this city, including the most beautiful subway system you’ve ever seen. It would take years to capture all of Moscow, but that means you have an endless amount of areas to discover.

So here’s a Street Photography guide so you can be ready to capture all that Moscow has to offer before you even arrive!

Top 5 Street Spots:

1. red square.

The Red Square is the most famous square in not just Russia, but all of Eastern Europe. The name actually doesn’t come from the color of the bricks or communism, but from the name in Russian, Krásnaya, once meaning “beautiful” before its meaning changed to “red.” This large plaza is what you see on the cover of guide books and magazines for Moscow, with St. Basil’s Cathedral being the center piece next to Lenin’s Mausoleum surrounded by the Kremlin Wall. Of course, the Red Square attracts hordes of tourist due to the main attractions, but all that activity around an interesting atmosphere does provide street photo opportunities. It’s also the central square connecting to the city’s major streets, providing a good starting point to explore outward.

You’ll also find the popular pedestrian only Nikolskaya Street connecting the Red Square to Lubyanka Square. This line of expensive shops includes plenty of activity, while also leading you to another popular square. Filled with history rivaling any city, the Red Square and surrounding areas are the heart and soul of Russia.

2. Patriarch’s Ponds

Patriarch’s Ponds is one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Moscow. Despite the name being plural, there’s only one large pond, but it’s worth a visit with your camera. It’s a popular spot for locals and expats to come relax or take a stroll around the pond. You get an interesting mix of young and old too, from young love to “babushkas” feeding pigeons. It’s a very peaceful park atmosphere in one of the nicer areas within the city center, while bringing enough activity for street photography. 

The pond is shallow and in the winter becomes a popular spot for ice-skating too. The area is also well-known for the location in the famous Russian novel, The Master and Margarita. 

3. Old Arbat (Stary Arbat)

Old Arbat is the most famous pedestrian street in Moscow, and dating back to the 15th century, also one of its oldest. Originally, it was an area of trade, but soon became the most prestigious residential area in Moscow. During the 18th century, Arbat started attracting the city’s scholars and artists, including Alexander Pushkin. Cafes lined the streets and impressive homes filled the neighborhood. Since then, New Arbat street was created as a highway in the area, while Old Arbat was paved for a 1km pedestrian only walkway.

Due to the historic buildings, famous artists that lived here, and the bohemian atmosphere, Old Arbat has become a big attraction for tourists today. Now, there’s a mix of cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops, street performers, street merchants and other attractions for visitors, and some locals, to come enjoy. It can get really busy here and there’s usually something interesting going on so it’s a good street to come walk with your camera for guaranteed life.

4. Gorky Park

One of the most famous places in Moscow is Gorky Park. The official name is Maxim Gorky’s Central Park of Culture & Leisure, which gives you an idea of what goes on here. When built, it was the first of its kind in the Soviet Union. Divided into two parts, it stretches along Moscow River. One end contains fair rides, foods stands, tennis courts, a sports club, a lake for boat rides, and more. This end brings more active life due to its number of attractions, while the other end is more relaxed, where you’ll find gardens, trees, older buildings, and an outdoor amphitheater.

Gorky Park attracts mostly locals so it’s a good spot to capture the non-tourist side of Moscow life. Muscovites come here to escape the city and unwind in a picturesque setting. The park remains alive outside of the warmer months too, especially when the lake turns into the city’s largest outdoor skating rink. I’d recommend taking the metro out here to spend at least half a day exploring the massive park’s life with your camera.

5. Maroseyka Street

Maroseyka Street is a popular area not too far from the Red Square. The long, winding street turns into Pokrovka and is lined with restaurants, cafes, bars and places to stay. It’s actually where I like to stay when I’m in Moscow due to its location and solid street photography opportunities itself. You have Kitay-gorod station near and if you keep walking southwest, you’ll get to the Red Square. But if you walk northwest, as it changes to Pokrovka, you can find a long street of activity for photography with its own interesting atmosphere.

6. Tverskoy Boulevard

Tverskoy Boulevard is the oldest and longest boulevard in Moscow, beginning at the end of Nikitsky Boulevard, and finishing at Pushkin Square, a spot to come for activity itself. The boulevard is made up of two avenues, with pedestrian walkways in-between. You’ll find grass, shrubbery, trees, benches and more walking it’s almost kilometer length. Many people come here to enjoy some relaxation, walk their dog, or just to use it to walk wherever they’re going. Its center location also provides a nice place to walk with your camera near plenty of other spots you’ll want to check out anyway.

Sample Street Walk:

For a full day of Street Photography, covering some of the best spots, you can follow this sample street walk for Moscow:

• Start your morning walking around the Red Square (1), while exploring the surrounding area, including Nikolskaya Street
• Then walk northwest to Patriarch’s Ponds (2) and slowly walk the pond and surrounding area with your camera
• Next, walk east to the Pushkin Monument and stroll down Tverskoy Boulevard (6)
• Once Tverskoy Boulevard (6) ends, it will turn into Nikitsky Boulevard. Follow this down until you get to the start of Old Arbat Street (3), across from Arbatskaya station
• After you’re done walking down Old Arbat Street (3) for more street photography, spend some time checking out Moscow’s beautiful metro stations
• To finish off the day with more street photography, get off the metro near Red Square (1) again, Maroseyka Street (5) or wherever you’re staying for the night.

3 Things I’ll Remember about Shooting in Moscow:

1. museum metro.

The Moscow metro system was the first underground railway system in the Soviet Union and today includes 203 stations across 340km of routes. The elaborate system has some of the deepest stations in the world too, with escalators that seem to go on forever. None of this is what makes it so special, though. Many of its stations feel like stepping inside a museum, making it without a doubt the most interesting and beautiful metro system I’ve been in.

When built, Stalin wanted to make the metro stations “palaces for the people” with marble, chandeliers, and grand architecture. The best part is the variety of architecture and styles used, making many of the stations a completely different experience visually. You could easily spend a whole day traveling the stations and there are even tours available for people who wish to do just that. My advice, though, would be just to buy a ticket and hop on and off at different stations, while exploring different lines. The museum-like surrounding mixed with the crowds of characters can make for a great photography experience.

• Elektrozavodskaya
• Komsomolskaya
• Ploschad Revolyutsii
• Dostoyevskaya
• Prospekt Mira

2. Moscow is Big

It’s no secret that Moscow is a big city, but it can feel even bigger with how spread out much of it is. This is especially true if you compare it to cities outside of Asia. If I compared it to cities in Europe, I’d probably say only Istanbul would warrant more time to really discover the depths of this city. Most only explore around the Red Square and surrounding area, but that is such a small part of the city. Although, that central area does give you plenty to see on its own.

Fortunately, I had a good friend living in the city to show me around, but it opened up my eyes even more to how much there is to discover in Moscow. It’s a big city with a variety of atmosphere that can take you from “east” to “west” and trendy to rugged depending on where you go. I’d imagine you’d have to live here a while to really know the city.

3. Cosmopolitan Mix of East meets West

Modern skyscrapers mixed with amazing architecture, a world-class metro system with museum-like beauty, trendy fashion and chic clubs, Moscow is a rich mix of Russian culture and history in a more western cosmopolitan package. There is a push to keep the Russian culture, while also pushing forward with a modern metropolis the whole world will envy. This comes with an impressive skyline, that continues to grow, and endless modernities, but with soviet nostalgia and atmosphere mixed in for good measure.

Mixed in with this grand western cosmopolitan atmosphere, is a strong national pride in Russia. This includes their famous leader, Vladimir Putin. Maybe no other place will you see a country’s leader more often. All over, from the pricey tourist shops to the underground walkway stalls, you’ll find goods with Putin’s likeness covering them. From t-shirts to magnets to Matryoshka dolls. There’s a strong national pride that can be seen around the city, which also extends to their leader. Moscow is many things. It’s East meets West, modernizations meets Soviet era, and a whole lot more.

What To Do For a Street Photography Break?:

Eat at a stolovaya.

Stolovayas are Russian cafeterias that became popular in the Soviet days. You grab a tray and walk down the line of freshly prepared local dishes, and select whatever you want from the chefs. They’re usually inexpensive and a much better value than restaurants, while giving you the opportunity to try from a wide selection of everyday Russian food. They’re also very tasty. I always include some borsch on my tray and go from there. The places themselves are all over Moscow and usually come with Soviet-era aesthetics to complete the experience.

Street Safety Score: 7

*As always, no place is completely safe! So when I talk about safety, I’m speaking in general comparison to other places. Always take precaution, be smart, observe your surroundings and trust your instincts anywhere you go!

Being the 2nd largest city in Europe with over 12 million people, you’re going to have your dangerous areas, but for the most part, it feels safe walking around. Russia is statistically higher in crime compared to most of Europe, but this generally doesn’t apply to tourists and visitors. Around the Red Square and surrounding city center, you should feel completely safe walking around. Pick pocketing can happen, but no more than other touristic places. I always explore Moscow freely without coming across too much to worry about. It’s a spread out city, though, so of course it matters where you are. Just use basic street smarts, know where you are and Moscow shouldn’t give you a problem.

Moscow is fast paced, big city life, which usually means people aren’t too concerned with you, or your camera. I don’t find people notice or pay much attention to me when I’m out taking photos in Moscow. For the most part, people just go about their day. You shouldn’t get too many looks or concern. But it can depend on the area you are in. The more you stick out, the more you might get noticed with suspicions. I’ve never had any problems in Moscow, or Russia, but just be careful who you’re taking a photo of if you get out of the city center. Other than that, it’s about average for reactions. 

Street Tips:

Learn the alphabet .

Much of Moscow, including the metro system, doesn’t use english. The Russian alphabet uses letters from the Cyrillic script, which if you aren’t familiar with it and don’t know the sounds, can be hard to decipher the words. This is most important for street names and metro stops when trying to get around. It can save confusion and make it easier getting around if you learn the basic alphabet. At the very least then, you can sound out the words to see which are similar in the english conversion, which can help matching them to maps. When out shooting street photography, getting around is as important as anything. So save yourself some time and frustration by learning the Russian Alphabet.

Use the metro

While Saint-Petersburg feels very walkable for a city its size, Moscow can feel very spread out, even for its bigger size. Outside of the Red Square area, you can have plenty of walking before getting anywhere very interesting, so you’ll need to take the metro a lot if you really want to explore the city. Maps are deceiving here too, it will always be further than it looks.

Another reason it’s less walkable than Saint-Petersburg is its completely different set-up. Moscow’s streets are mostly contstructed in rings with narrow, winding streets in-between. This is common with medieval city cities that used to be confined by walls, but you usually don’t have it in a city this massive. Saint-Petersburg has a more grid-like pattern that also uses the canals to help you know your way around. When it comes to navigating on foot in Moscow, it can be more difficult, so bring a map and take the metro when needed. It’s why Moscow’s metro carries more passengers per day than the London and Paris subways combined.

Explore other areas if you have time

Moscow is really big. While most people stay around the Red Square within the Boulevard Ring, there’s so much more to the city. I covered some other spots outside of this circle, but if you really want to see the city, you’ll need time. If you do have time, some other areas I’d check out first are Zamoskvarechye, along some of the south and western Moscow.

Conclusion:

Moscow’s name brings a certain mystique, but once you’re there it might bring a different atmosphere than you expect. It’s big and sprawling, but beautiful in many ways. It can feel like a European capital on a grand scale, but you can definitely find its Russian side in there.

The urban sprawl of Moscow can be intimidating, but give it enough time and you’ll be rewarded with plenty to discover. All with the world’s best metro system to take you around.
