Day 1:ANTANANARIVO

Day 2: antananarivo – antsirabe.

Breakfast at the hotel. We spend the day exploring the region around Antsirabe with the highlight being the crater lakes of Andraikiba and Tritriva. Riding on paved and dirt roads with gentle undulations, we explore the first caldera located just 7 km west of the city. Lakes of Andraikiba. It is said that a prince lived nearby, and that he could not bring himself to choose between two young women. So he offered them a challenge: the one who would cross the lake the fastest would become his wife. Alas! One, pregnant, could not make it to the end; desperate, she shouted « Kiba! » (“I’m sinking!”) disappearing under the waves. Since then, it is rumored that the spirit of this beautiful drowned princess comes out of her waters at each dawn. Here, eating pork is fady (forbidden). In addition to the landscape, you can enjoy the small local craft shops. Break lunch on the road. In terms of hiking to the lakes, the first site you want to visit is certainly Lake Tritiva. Located in the southwest of Antsirabe, it seems surrounded by myths and mysteries, and mainly fascinates lovers of tragic love stories. Indeed, the legend says that it is in this place that two upset lovers ended their lives. In addition, its dark waters accentuate the funny impression it gives to visitors. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

We drive always to street national 7 and turn left after to join Zafimaniry village. Once, we organize hike to Zafimaniry village, precisely to Ifasina village. It’s the nearest village from Antoetra that we can attend for 05 hours. You can admire craftsman who were working. This art&architecture of the local Zafimaniry people has a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage classification. Then, we go back to Ambositra to join the hotel. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

Day 4: AMBOSITRA - RANOMAFANA

Separated from the Southeastern coast of Africa, Madagascar’s isolation only adds to its appeal as a tour destination. Its seclusion is the reason for the rare plants and animals who live here, many of which are found nowhere else in the world.

Keep an eye peeled for the famed ring-tailed lemur as we explore the lush tropical rainforest on the Eastern side of the isle. And look out for other curious creatures along your trip: tomato frogs, dwarf chameleons, and hedgehog-like tenrecs – all unique to the country and so prolific that sightings are sure to happen.

The wilds of Madagascar offer an exciting combination of terrain for the adventurous cyclist & hiker to tackle. From the mix of tarmac & hard-packed dirt roads, the uphill climbs (notably, to the glassy Lake Tritriva atop the mountain of the same name), to the vast downhill trail across the Horombe Plateau. Madagascar is an island of unparalleled landscapes, & this adventure treks it all.

Ascend the ancient stone steps of Antananarivo, the country’s capital. Mingle with the friendly Malagasy people to experience their culture and how they live off the land. Refresh your hard-working muscles in the natural pools & waterfalls we pause at to rest. And ride the wide-open savannah, punctuated by otherworldly rock formations.

Bike and Hike Wild Madagascar trip was absolutely fantastic, it was a perfect combination of cycling and 3 days hiking. The lead guide Mr. SN and second guide Mr LR as well as the bike mechanic 3rd ride support RM were so accommodating, knowledgeable, friendly and helpful every pedal stroke and step along the way. The vehicle transport drives very safe – excellent drivers, so courteous – very much appreciated. One of the major surprises was how good all the food options were at 3 meals plus snack breaks while cycling, the use of local food very much appreciated. The homemade lunches prepared by our own bike tour staff were a highlight to look forward to each day. Excellent job on every level. Congratulations “Happy Guy On A Bike.”

Bicycling & hiking adventures in madagascar.

Madagascar's isolation from the rest of the African continent has led to the evolution of a vastly diversified array of flora and fauna. And the best way to discover this variety if on a Madagascar bike tour to hiking trip to explore the endemic wildlife and biodiversity of Andasibe and Ranomafana rainforest.

The country also has a cultural side to be explored and experienced. Be engaged by the handicrafts and mineral workshops in Antsirabe and Ambositra. Relish the views as you cycle through the terraced rice fields of the highlands. Stop and discover rural villages and the everyday way of life in Madagascar.

Pedalers invites you to discover the island nation of Madagascar with us.

Erwin Attenberger

Ifaty to Antisiranana

Rider Ifaty to Antisiranana

Hi, I´m Erwin, already 69, retired. My first long tour was TDA 2014, where I went from Khartoum to Nairobi and on my own through Uganda, back to Kenia and from there down to Southafrica, Lesotho, Swaziland and Mozambique. Meantime I´ve been on several TDA-Tours including South America, Silk Route and Trans-Himalaya. Looking forward to meet you on the next tour with TDA.

Michel Savoie

This will be my eighth trip with TDA. I like to travel on a bike with other cyclists like me.

Frieder Wolfart

After riding with TDA one and a half time the Silkroad, the Magical Madagaskar and the Himalaya Tour it's time for the next one to South Korea an Japan. For me Korea and Japan are totally unknown countries and it's time to change that. I am looking forward to meet some old friends again and to find some new ones.

David Houghton

To celebrate the 200th anniversary of the bicycle in 2017, I’ll be taking 200 bicycle rides. Twenty-six of those rides will be in Madagascar.

JANICE FLEMING

I love to travel. I love to cycle. My ex & I biked 8,000 km across Canada for our honeymoon in 1979. I have not done any touring since. I thought I should start with something small but Madagascar called me.

I am 73, live in Switzerland and work voluntarily for the public energy commission of my home town and as elderly expert in climate and energy policy issues in Switzerlad. Besides cycling and biking I like hiking, jogging and skiing. With Lilo my partner, I participate in the care of our three grandchildren (5, 78 10 years old) whenever our daughter and her husband have need for it to match job and family needs. I know TDA from the TdA-Madagascar tour in 2017. Now I look forward to the Journey to the East 2 to get to know South Korea and Japan.

Love Cycling. Love Africa. Tired of London..... .....so looking forward to joining up with TDA and fellow cyclists, to explore Madagascar (or maybe just a small part of it, in my case)

Annegrete Warrer

Starting doing my first TDA trip back in 2011 and doing quite some more along the years I am so happy to be back there after a far too long Corona pause. First time cycling with you in Europe is exciting - a bit more comfortable than my third world camping expeditions.. Fits me really well! And about time to learn the more charming stretches of Germany after pendling between Austria (where I live) and Denmark (where I come from) for over 40 years. This will be wonderfull: to meet you all and doing a full supported tour again!

Hi, my name is Jean. I grew up in the beautiful town of Québec city. I have been very active since my young age. Physical education teacher for 32 years; now retired. That's my second experience with the Tour d'Afrique: In 2011, I participated in the four months challenging T.D.A.: very proud of my E.F.I. (evrey f... inches) Countries visited on bike: Canada: coast to coast. Vancouver to Inuvik ( Arctic: on the Dempster highway.) Africa: Cairo to Cape Town. India. See you all.

Johannes Hamunyela

How I got to be a cyclist Hi my name is Johannes Hamunyela, well known as “Jo-Joe”en I am 1,62 height,24years of age, it all started off as a joke clearly remember the year of 2008. By then I was 15 years of age. In my grade 8 in the city of Namibian well known as Windhoek. I was always so curious on owning my own bike as I always use to see most of my friends riding not allowing me to share with me simply because I take too long to return. Likely for me my secondary school get sponsored with bikes and the school started working out to those who do good for the school where I got to own one for myself too. So we started bragging on who’s faster than who we would go to the high ways. “the western bypass” to race amongst ourselves until we decided to actually join up for a competition “Race” where I got to win my first Amazing race the NEDBANK CYCLE CHALLENGE 35km under P.A.Y Physically Active Youth so I got to be introduced to P.A.Y which is an after school program where I would always come and do my school work and where we did some different sports activities’ so those of us that loved cycling joined and we get to be registered in races and we made it more fun by competing each other. There it goes the more you win the more you want to keep winning as I grow. So I got to be selected in the national team where I am till now, I got to travel to different countries either with my team or the national team to represent the country. And we would mostly bring back either medals or jersey’s as time passes so do i get to ride different bikes for different teams too. Where by so bikes sometimes I get to be invited alone for races to other countries. Like Japan, South Africa. I as well got to be doing training camps. E.g. the UCI camps which most of the races and places I visited I consider as achievements. I really feel like I have a lot to tell when it comes to my life history. As came from a really struggling family and with me cycling helps me provide a little income to my family. Where I can. It’s one of the reasons why I take cycling serious. I was born and raised by a single mother unemployed. I have 3 three brothers and a sister. I am my mum’s second born of the family. Where my younger brothers love seeing me ride my bike and I wish I could get them their own bikes but it really impossible as cycling in my country is not really recognized that much. So the little price money I get I have to assist my mother. With buying food and pay my little brother pre-primary school. I really feel sad sometimes when I see them look at me. I am rated as one of Namibia’s top cyclist and I am glad and happy, I feel proud of myself.

Emily Currie

“‘Happiness is only real when shared’: I think this counts for a whole spectrum of experiences and emotions—pain, hardship, excitement, joy, for instance—and explains why sharing an adventure or journey with a group makes it so very real!”

Who would have thought that growing up on a farm and a career in rural healthcare would prepare me for a job like my job at TDA? I always had the desire to travel and even though I thought working here would be too good to actually come true when I sent in my job application, here I am, six tours and 28 countries later. I’ve learned more about the world and myself then I ever expected.

With so many incredible memories—and so much food shared, so many friends made along the way—it will take me years to process everything I’ve experienced courtesy of TDA. Highlights of my travels so far include finishing the North American Epic (NAE) in Mexico City on the Day of the Dead, cycling Central Asia’s Pamir Highway, Abdul’s pilaf in the parking lot, Colombia, pan con chicharron, Patagonia, a massive thunder storm in Zambia, Hami melon, Madagascar, Samarkand, walnut and honey spread on fresh bread and topped with whipped yak cream, eaten in a warm yurt… and the list goes on! It’s amazing to realize that everything I experience with TDA will have an impact on my life long after these adventures are over.

One adventure I don’t expect to have again is the one I had in Mexico, when we discovered Hurricane Patricia was heading right straight at us. Monitoring the storm’s progress through the night—from stage 4 to stage 5—seemed so unreal. By 5:00 a.m., CNN was calling Patricia the strongest hurricane ever measured on planet earth. A few hours later, we loaded all bikes, riders, kit and crew onto an extra van and bus … and took off, tails between our legs, because Patricia was shaping up to be a beast! By nightfall we were safe and sound in the heart of tequila country, and, as Patricia lost most of her fury at landfall, the party at our lodgings ramped up.

There are so many wonderful aspects to working with TDA but key amongst them are travelling with purpose, meeting people from all over—and the food!

Since 1990 living and working ( dental surgeon ) in Muscat ( Sultanate of Oman ).

This will be my 12th trip with TDA, as I've previously ridden all or part of the Trans Europa, the Orient Express, the Hippie Trail, the Bamboo Road, Magical Madagascar, the Tour d'Afrique, the Trans Oceania, the Odyssey, the North American Epic, the South American Epic and the Great American Roadtrip . I retired eight years ago, after more than 35 years prosecuting criminal cases for the Ontario government, and spend the bulk of my time cycling, golfing, reading and travelling. I am looking forward to getting together with some old friends and making some new ones.

Australian 25-year-old journalism graduate whose only priority is getting out and seeing as much of the world as possible! I'm passionate about travelling, socialising, and writing (usually about travelling and socialising).

"It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle." Ernest Hemingway

Rae Simpson

I'm a retired test pilot/engineer/other aviation things. I took up cycling when arthritis and a double hip replacement ended my running career. My wife, Ursula, and I have done a number of TDA trips starting with Africa in 2008, using them as our window to places we haven't been before. We've enjoyed every one. After three postponements, we are really looking forward to JTE happening in 2023. Looking forward to reuniting with friends from previous trips and meeting new ones in Seoul.

Steven Pade

I live in the United States on the West coast in Burlingame, California just south of San Francisco. I'm a retired software engineer that specialized in medical applications. I love to travel. I will go anywhere anytime. This is my third TDA tour. I cycled the Orient Express in 2013 and Magical Madagascar in 2017. Cycling is my passion. I am proud of the fact that I bicycle more miles per year then I ride or idrive a car. I love the freedom of traveling on a bicycle. Traveling by bicycle your only concern is your health, your bicycle, and experiencing the immediate world around you. Im looking forward to meeting you in India and experiencing the wonder of the Himalaya Mountains with you.

Ursula Simpson

I am a retired database analyst. Enjoying life in Squamish, on Canada's West coast. Either hiking, biking, or skiing. Hi Everyone! Really looking forward to joining Bamboo Road 2022 as your Tour Medic. Saddle sores happen--I'm here to help, and we'll get through it. :) A bit about me: I've been an ER Nurse for 20 years, and now I do travel medicine and remote primary care. I love running amok outdoors on a bike, a snowboard, a boat, or my own two feet. Colorado is home base. I'm curious about the world, so I go on lots of expeditions, explorations, journeys, and trips. If you ask "Hey wanna come visit me in Siberia," I am that person who will show up on your doorstep. This is more or less how I started working with TDA. My last tour was Magical Madagascar in 2019, and I'm super excited to do another. Ok, see y'all soon!

There are so many interesting places to travel to, and I can't think of any better way to travel through anywhere, than by bike. I enjoy the challenge it brings and I look forward to going to the more out of the way locations. I enjoy travel, and I love cycling so am looking forward to combining them both again on this trip. My first TDA trip was Madagascar in 2019, I did the Trans-Caucasus in 2022, and I can’t wait to do another trip with TDA. The Silk Road has always inspired me, and does daunt me at the same time, but I look forward to experiencing what it has to offer. In the meantime I look forward to a few sections in South America!

Stephen Owen

Cycling since school age chasing buses to school, and now aged 57, I have stepped up cycling in the last 10 years with weekend rides and endurance 300/500km rides in 24hrs, wisdom/body is now telling me that multi-day riding is more fun... More recently cycled across Atlas mountains North Africa, Sri Lanka, and recently TDA Madagascar. The Tour d'Afrique 2023 trip will be exciting and push me to the limits and beyond, TDA Madagascar May 2019 recharged my batteries for a few years and this trip is long overdue and will scratch the itch again. It always brings a smile to my face once I've sat down at end of the day with coffee in hand and consider how lucky I am.

Becky Lewis

I live in Steamboat Springs, CO. I do lots of outside activities in this mountain town, including hiking, gravel and road biking, alpine skiing, x-country skiing, snow shoeing, landscaping, cooking/baking, and probably more I can't think of right now. I do a lot of volunteer work. I'm single and retired.

Amy Jenkins

I am so excited to join this ride! I have ridden in Italy, Spain, Croatia, Vietnam , Cambodia and across America. This is sure to be the coolest location yet! I am married and have 2 adult children, their spouses and a 6 year old grandson, all of whom are the light of my life! In addition to biking, I love everything outdoors including snow and water skiing and teach adaptive snow and waterskiing as well. Because I am retired, I spend my time volunteering for Hospice, for an adaptive sports program and at our local hospital with our therapy dog Mollie. Life is grand and I look forward to this wonderful adventure with all of you!

EVAN KENLEY

I have the wanderlust. What better way to do it than by bike? I have traveled extensively and recently did the SAE and Silk Route. What fun and challenging trips. I am hitting that sweet spot in age when the time, energy and desire are there to challenge myself to new adventures. I look forward to sharing this challenging experience with my fellow adventurers.

Steve Caithness

I'm looking forward to this trip. I cycled Madagascar 2019 and was new to cycling long distances when I started that, and loved the experience. I've been pretty active all my life, playing sports, fishing and diving, and especially enjoyed travelling to Truk Lagoon in 2011 and 2013 diving shipwrecks. So I am looking forward to a new challenge and enjoy meeting new people from different cultures and with different ways of life.

Alan Knight

I look forward to meeting and riding with all of you. This will be my third tour with TDA. I survived Cairo to Cape Town in 2013 and Madagascar in 2019. I hope to survive the Bamboo Road as well – and not get lost too many times. I retired some years ago and currently live in Cairo. My wife. Liz Tayler, will join me.

Since I started cycling at 49 and doing lots of bike trips to see the world, , I have ALWAYS and continue to be the oldest woman on each and every tour. Since, I’ve cycled independently in Europe, New Zealand, Middle East, North America, TDA Silk Road 2016, TDA Madagascar 2019 and TDA Himalayas 2019. Madagascar is an exciting location, will be my first trip without loaded panniers, looking forward to meeting like minded people and seeing the Lemurs.

Jane Hartwell

I have wanted to travel to Madagascar for over 20 years, and am really excited to do so via bicycle! I really believe you see the world from different perspective from a bike. This will be my first time on a bicycle tour. I'm looking forward to meeting and riding with everyone else. I don't have any (non-work related) social media links!

Mitchell Kadelbach

Something of a British Canadian mongrel, raised in Toronto and currently awaiting judgement day in the UK's Southwest. I first cut my teeth as a chef in Toronto's fast-paced restaurant scene, specialising in Italian and Mexican cuisine. But really grew in to my own, after I started traveling, seeing drawing connections, conjuring up my own fusions, and getting to grips with real french cuisine in France. In 2018, I completed the Silk Route tour with TDA as the tour chef. and then returned to the region in 2022 on TDA's Trans-Caucuses. Working for TDA is truly a dream come true, as I never stop savouring the opportunity, overland across continent, tasting cuisine, drinking in the sights and sounds, learning languages and laughing with locals. I hope to engaged more openly with my travels by, recording and photographing the outlandish and irregular natural and cultural communities, eventually capitalising on my journalism undergrad.

A long time ago, I had a ten minute conversation on the beach with Steve who had been on a TDA tour through Africa. I didn’t know it then but it planted a thought in my head that would soon change the course of my life.

It seemed that everything I had done before had in some way prepared me for this. A life in hospitality and a few years at sea - from some grand establishments to some very inhospitable vessels and anything in-between.

There were a variety of less stimulating occupations I had explored before I landed at TDA. I think this is what has kept me here for so long, the almost overwhelming stimulation that one gets from daily life on tour, which is miles apart from my quiet country life in South Africa.

That, and the other people. There is always such a variety of people from all walks of life and from all over the world that I would otherwise not have met.

An adventure loving guy from Colorado now living in Hawaii. I fell in love with travel and adventure at an early age where I got hooked with exploring new places, cultures, and experiences. From that urge to explore, came my passion for storytelling which I loved to share through the creative mediums of photography, videography, and writing. Another form of travel that I like is through music as I love all kinds. I get excited about the morning as it involves sunrises, coffee, tea, and especially breakfast! I'm an outgoing guy who genuinely loves to learn from others about their passions and goals in life along with hearing the stories they have to share! I hope to continue traveling, exploring landscapes, cultures, and experiences, while creating long lasting memories and friendships along the way! Excited for this next journey!

Eleanor Patterson

Rode the Ruta Maya tour in 2015 and loved it. Was planning on doing the first Magical Madagascar Tour in 2019 but ended up doing the last 2 sections of West Africa en Velo in 2019 which was fantastic and allowed me and my partner to catch up with a number of Ruta Maya riders who had signed up for the tour, and to meet new friends. Covid along with a change in jobs put the brakes on riding the 2021 Magical Madagascar Tour, so we are very much looking forward to finally getting to Madagascar in 2023. In the meantime we are riding Darwin to Broome.

I'm looking forward to meeting my fellow adventurers on this unique adventure!

Coffee first, then a few written pages, followed by breakfast before starting any day's journey. I am thankful to my dad, who took the training wheels off before pushing me forward, a momentum of freedom I've never forgotten. Grateful to be on this trek with my partner Rod and amazing son David. I hope to stop a lot to fill notebooks, eat leisurely at the lunch stop, and siesta under any tree before peddling on to the finish line, where hopefully a cool refreshing drink will be waiting for me. My husband Jeff and I are very excited to be returning to Africa after being part of the 2019 Tour d'Afrique (Sections 7 & 8). We live in beautiful Vancouver, Canada and get to ride almost year-round. I've been able to ride on every continent, and Africa was my final continent (ask me about Antarctica!). Jeff and I met riding 14 years ago while training for a 400km one-day ride that raises money for cancer research. A breast cancer survivor myself, I love that I can combine my love of riding with my commitment to creating a future where nobody dies of cancer.

Went on a section of the tour in 2013, Khartoum to Ethiopia, and just want to continue other tours, meeting wonderful people, discovering amazing countries while being out of my comfort zone. My son will also be part of the tour. What a great way to travel!

An active individual from Denver, Colorado. I love to hike, bike, swim, run, snowshoe, ski, volunteer and travel the world. During the year I am a 6-8th grade teacher and work with kids with learning disabilities.

Just a guy who loves biking in nature, not fast, with plenty of stops for food and photos. Currently working as an engineering consultant in California with my own company, giving me some flexibility for longer vacation trips. Before 2022, I'd mostly gone on DIY 1-week bike tours, so I was apprehensive about being able to handle longer trips... but I joined the first month of the 2022 Bamboo Road (Vietnam and Cambodia), and the full Journey to the East in 2023 and had a great time on both. I'm considering joining the 2025 Madagascar, half of the 2025 Silk Route, or The Odyssey 2026.

Manfred Hoefert

This is the first time I'm participating in TDA organized tour and I'm really looking foward to it.

Jacob Purmer

Roel van den berg.

I've been club riding since 2004. Mostly I tour around the Winnipeg area of Manitoba. When I'm not cycling, you might find me at the race track with one of my sports cars. I'm a bit of an adrenaline junky. Other passions are social justice and international development. This has led me to relief and development work in southeast asia and the middle east. I'm a host on Warm Showers and enjoy meeting and feeding cross-Canada cyclists who make it as far as Winnipeg!

Drew Digney

I am a 58 year old trying to retire emergency doc from the east coast of Vancouver Island. Yes I am Melanie’s other half and love traveling the world with her since our meeting in Nepal many years ago. We have recently caught the bike bug and are looking forward to seeing Morocco up close and personal. Not being a fan of the 'all inclusive' I am looking forward to the days in the saddle, the smells of the sites and the evenings spent exploring and meeting new people from near and far.

Melanie Digney

I grew up mostly in the UK and have lived in BC for more than 30 years. I’ve always wanted to travel in Morocco and love the idea of exploring by bike. My husband and I met rafting and trekking in Nepal in the 1980s and our travels have included more trekking and diving than biking. A 12-day bike tour in Sri Lanka in 2022 whetted our appetites for a longer trip and here we are, on what is the first, hopefully, of several TDA tours. Looking forward to meeting other like-minded travellers and exploring this part of the world.

Stephen Hyde

Just retired, I have been looking for a cycling adventure and this trip fits the bill. I have lived in Abu Dhabi for the last 22 years and I am now back in the cold of the UK. Hoping for some good weather, great cycling and looking forward to meeting everyone and starting.

Madanature Bike Tours

Welcome to madanature bike tours.

Madagascar is a unique place and certainly an experience that should be on every adventurous traveller's list of things to do. It is a land of extremely diverse natural beauty, ranging from verdant rainforests to craggy sandstone and beautiful sandy beaches. Then there's the wildlife. Wildlife enthusiasts have always counted this as one of the world's special places. The amazing thing is that encounters with wildlife are often very close ones: lemurs big and small don‘t seem to run away, but just stare back at you with their big round eyes. Chameleons are also quite happy to climb up your arm and more, if you let them. And do not forget the birds. That make Madagascar a unique experience for wildlife.

There is also the novelty of travelling in a country that sees very few tourists. Putting up with power outages and poor roads is tempered by the fact that travellers get to absorb a slow and relaxed pace of life where no one ever seems to do anything in a hurry. The Malagasy have a commonly–used word for this – ‘mora mora’, which means ‘slowly, slowly‘. You will soon discover that Madagascar is indeed a magical place and a memorable travel experience unlike any other. Madagascar is most definitely a destination for adventurous travellers and nature lovers.

Looking to experience real Africa by Bike? Our Madagascar Cycle Tour is Extraordinary

If you think Madagascar is just another part of Africa – think again!  Madagascar, the fourth largest island in the world, broke away from Africa millions of years ago and was uninhabited for millennia.  With a coastline lined with coral beaches and lagoons the land rises sharply to a great central plateau that covers most of the island. From temperate highlands to tropical coasts the landscape and scenery is as rich and unique as it’s wildlife.  Madagascar’s isolation has allowed many remarkable species to evolve, and there is not a single Madagascan mammal species which can be found in any other place in the world.

To explore it all would take months, so we have created our cycle tour to bring you up close to the essence of what makes Madagascar tick. Starting from the capital of Antananarivo we leave the busy city behind. We ride on remote back roads, visit small towns and rural villages, and discover lemurs, chameleons and more wildlife not found anywhere else on earth. We cross the central highlands, through endemic dry forests, past ancient towering baobab trees and out to the tropical coast overlooking the Mozambique Channel in Morondava. You’ll take a two day riverboat trip through sparsely populated gorges, remote villages and sleeping crocodiles, hike through the incredible Tsingy limestone formations and dine on a mouthwatering mix of Malagasy and French cuisine.

How about a Madagascar & Kenya & Tanzania Combo?  Each year our second Madagascar cycle tour times in perfectly with our first Kenya & Tanzania cycle tour  – making an awesome Two Trip Combo possible in one flight to Africa.

Madagascar Cycle Tour Frequently Asked Questions

The biking lowdown.

Your tour itinerary offers 15-108km biking per day; a total distance of up to 580km spread over 10 days of biking.

The Madagascan Terrain  is predominantly rolling and flat, with a couple of climbs up to 6km in length. The riding surface (50% quiet paved roads and 50% dirt and 4×4 roads) can be rough at times, slow going, pot-holed and sandy and the riding challenge of the tour should not be judged by mileage alone. The trip is suited to riders with a good level of biking fitness and off-road biking experience will greatly enhance handling on rough roads and add to the enjoyment of your tour. A mountain bike with front suspension is the ideal bike and we have a fleet of our own mountain bikes available for hire.

Support:   Our trusty support vehicle carries all your luggage, has lunch, snacks and water at hand, and is there if you need a break from the saddle.

What about the Madagascar riverboat journey?

Riverboat journey.

We take a break from our bikes for a 2 day/2 night riverboat journey down the Tsiribihina River. Our chartered large flat bottomed riverboat has a shaded top deck and seating with tables.  All our meals are prepared in the onboard kitchen by our boat crew.

We spend between 4-6 hrs per day on board gently cruising downstream and camping beside waterfalls on the riverbank at night.

How fit do I need to be for this cycle tour?

It is not always ‘Just like riding a bike’!  The Malagasy dirt roads can be rough and sandy, and are not maintained as roads may be in your country.  So get out there and ride as many off-road surfaces you can find, and some hills too. Please do read about the daily riding distances and riding terrain in the itinerary and prepare accordingly.  The more prepared you are the more you will enjoy your holiday.

Preparing for your cycle tour should involve:

  • Gravel, dirt and off-road riding, with some hills.
  • You should be comfortable riding 3-5 times a week with regular rides of 30-50km in length.

Please do contact us if you would like some help with a detailed training plan.

What kind of meals do you provide?

Your tour leaders will take care of your meals and snacks throughout your adventure with us- often taking advantage of the delicious Malagasy and French fare in local cafes and restaurants. This excludes three lunches and one evening meal which are at your own cost to give you the opportunity to explore eating options of your own choosing.

We are most definitely able to cater for *vegetarians and special diets and if this includes you, it is essential to advise us of this before your tour begins, so that the support vehicle can be stocked with the necessary supplies. Typical meals include:

  • Breakfasts – French continental style, bread, omelettes, coffee & tea. (Supplemented with muesli).
  • Lunches – Picnic style lunches, fresh salads, cold meats, cheese & bread.
  • Evening Meals – Mostly taking advantage of the delicious local dishes in cafes and hotel restaurants. Generally including fish, chicken or beef and loads of vegetables.

*Vegetarians – Please note that in Madagascar meat is considered staple.  Travelling as a vegetarian is definitely possible, however may lack variety.

What kind of accommodation can I expect?

All accommodation for the duration of your Madagascar bike trip is included. 12 nights are in small hotel bungalows and guesthouses on a twin share basis (2-4 star), and 3 nights camping. The camping is real camping in remote locations. Washing facilities & toilets are available every night except one night while on riverboat where we have no washing facilities. We supply spacious dome tents which we will show you how to erect, and foam mattresses. You will need to bring your own light sleeping bag and a small travel pillow.

Travelling on your own?  We will pair you with another single biker of the same gender to share a twin room.  If you do not wish to share, that is fine too, but a single supplement will apply.

What type of bikes do we ride?

In Madagascar we have our own fleet of bikes available for hire. They are Avanti Montari 7.4 which are a quality New Zealand designed mountain bike with 29 inch wheels for medium, large and XL frame sizes and 27.5 inch wheels for small frame size. They have Rockshox 100mm front suspension, hydraulic disc brakes and shimano 2×10 gearing. We carry all our spare parts out to Africa and maintain them ourselves to make sure they are in optimal riding condition for your ride with us.

If you will be hiring a bike from us please let us know prior to your trip, and please feel free to bring your favourite saddle and clip in pedals (if you normally clip in).

What is the maximum size of the cycle group?

This trip has 6-12 bikers, plus two experienced Escape Adventures tour leaders and a small team of local interpreter and drivers.

Tell me more about Madagascan hiking opportunities

Hiking in Madagascar – We also have 2-3 short hiking opportunities during the tour in two stunning national parks:

Tsingy Bemaraha and Kirindy Forest. One daytime hike takes 2-3 hrs and one is a night-time hike to make the most of the possible wildlife opportunities. The trails are generally unformed so good sturdy walking shoes are ideal. Open sandals are not recommended.

Madagascar cycle tour & making a difference

Escape Adventures, endeavor to ensure that our actions always benefit the people, communities, economies, environments and eco-systems we visit.  The following are specific ways of how we aim to make a difference in Madagascar…

Lets support Local Business

We charter our support vehicles from a small owner/operator Malagasy business and we employ local drivers and a local knowledge / interpreter. This directly employs 4-5 local people for the duration of each of our Madagascar cycle tours.

All of the accommodation we stay in – in Madagascar are small businesses, family owned and run guesthouses and locally owned boutique hotels.

You have probably not considered how good Malagasy avocados could possibly be!! Our bikers can all tell you they are huge and to die for! Indeed Madagascar grows a lot of delicious tropical fruit and temperate vegetables! Avocados, coffee (infused locally) tomatoes, bananas, mangos, pineapple, papaya, peppers, cucumbers, onions, and potatoes just to name a few! We buy lots of this delicious locally grown fruit and vegetables either directly from the farmers or from local markets. We stop regularly to enjoy coffee and donuts (the local way). When we eat out we use small locally owned establishments that rarely see tourists.

National Parks

In Madagascar the National Parks provide safe place for lemurs, chameleon, fossa and many other flora and fauna species only found in Madagascar.

On your Madagascar cycle tour you will visit two national parks, Kirindy Mitea National Park and Tsingy De Bemaraha National Park and  The Lemurs Park

Not only do our park fees help towards the preservation of these wild spaces and the protection of the wildlife, we also pay local guides to host and educate us and of course it provides you with the amazing opportunity to see these native animals of Madagascar in their natural habitat.

Lets plant trees!

We have been trialing a tree planting project with a local village near the coast to help preserve and increase a remnant forest – unfortunately this project we has had mixed success to date and we are working with the local villages to see how the success rates can be improved. We are also researching a regeneration project near the city of Antsirabe where our plan is to plant 10 trees for every biker and our crew who join us on tour in Madagascar.

Pete Thretheway

My wife and I did a memorable cycling tour across Madagascar with Escape Adventures. The organisation was good, the itinerary was well thought out, the tour leaders were top notch and the local support crew terrific. It was fun from start to finish and really was a great adventure. I highly recommend Escape Adventures to anyone.

Well done to the Escape Adventures team! A perfect balance of physical adventure and personal challenge. I never thought I would learn a new sand biking skill at 65 years! Your attention to detail, from Mandy and her super prompt response to emails to Leigh saying ‘have a donut’ with your mid morning roadside coffee, to the reminder from Mushi to ride on the RIGHT side of the road! Ongoing information of the next step in our holiday, individual and team chat, delicious picnic lunches, along with lemur table cloth! Even after the tour was officially finished, Escape Adventures has organised a taxi for us!! Our tour leaders were so conscientious, however giving us independence at the the same time! I was impressed with their care and attention to each individual. I’ll keep spreading the work about you in my Escape Adventures bike shirt! Happy Days!

Diane Stead

A great trip in a very poor country. The people were fascinated seeing cyclists. They were very friendly and welcoming. Some awesome scenery and some long days, but great diversity. We saw Lemurs in the wild as well as in the Lemur park. Guides and drivers were great and overall a very worthwhile experience.

I found the trip very enjoyable because it was well organised with good bikes and tour leaders. We participated in a diverse range of activities as well as sights while touring, and found it easy to interact with the local people especially. By the end of the trip we had bonded as a friendly group.

Are you looking for somewhere off the beaten track for your next bucket list destination? The unique country of Madagascar is a stunning blend of tropical beaches, lush rainforests, and incredible wildlife. If you want to take the road less traveled, Madagascar could be just the place for you.

With its balmy sub-tropical climate, expect wide-open blue skies and tropical vibes.  The seasons are divided into the dry season, lasting from May to October, and the wet season, which takes place from November to April.

Madagascar has numerous national parks and wildlife reserves to visit.  The incredible biodiversity, endemic flora, and fauna are a big draw to travelers visiting the country. Due to the distinct ecosystems and the country’s geographical isolation, many of Madagascar’s animals and plant life are found nowhere else in the world.

A highlight for many visitors to the country is the opportunity to observe Lemurs.  Found only in Madagascar, these incredible creatures have recognizably different personalities.  They are highly social creatures and live in groups.  Many national parks and reserves offer precious areas of protected habitat for lemurs to take sanctuary in.  Get your cameras ready to capture these charming creatures and their cheeky antics.

In addition to Lemurs, Madagascar is home to over half of the species of the world’s chameleons.  Spot these incredibly unique creatures as you explore.  With your expert guide’s help, you will learn more about the country’s amazing wildlife and habitat.

Recognized as one of the world’s most biodiverse locations – up there with Brazil , China and Peru , nature lovers will be in their element. The eastern part of the country is covered with dense rainforest, which harbors a dazzling array of orchids.  Spectacular volcanic mountains run through the center of the country.  To the west of the country lies a drier savannah-like grassland.

Marvel at the silhouettes of the mighty baobab tree, otherwise known as the eternal tree.  These incredibly long-lived trees play an essential part in Madagascar’s ecosystem.  Their unique shape captures the imagination with their imposing presence and bare root-like branches.  Stroll along the Avenue of Baobabs to enjoy a stunning view of these giant trees.

For those wanting to experience the country’s wildlife, a group tour is an ideal way to cover a lot of ground quickly, maximizing your experience while on the ground. The roads in Madagascar can be challenging to navigate, although infrastructure has been steadily improving.  By choosing a tour, you can be assured of a professional driver to help you reach your destinations safely and comfortably.

As one of the largest islands in the world, Madagascar has an abundance of coast to explore. The east coast looks out towards the Indian Ocean.  To the country’s north lies the lush waters of the Emerald Sea, a sheltered lagoon with crystal clear turquoise waters littered with the palm-fringed islands of the Nosy Be archipelago, one of Madagascar’s premier beach destinations.  The picture-perfect islands attract visitors to enjoy a relaxed stay on the tranquil shores.

The Emerald Sea glistens invitingly under the sun’s warm rays and vibrant blue skies. This stunning lagoon conjures dreams of a tropical paradise.  Underneath, white sand frames the seabed, and turtles, rays, and tropical fish flit amongst its warm waters.

The archipelago of Nosy Be is the perfect spot to indulge in island hopping.  There are fantastic snorkeling opportunities around the islands and the chance to spot an array of marine life, including turtles and dolphins. Kick back, relax, and enjoy the sun, sand, and calm waters.

If your considering Madagascar as your next destination, a group tour is a fantastic way to make the most of your vacation.  Tour Radar has an incredible selection of tours to suit various tastes and budgets.

Take the stress out of your holiday and book now for an unforgettable adventure to Madagascar.  You won’t be disappointed.

Madagascar Baobabs and Beyond

Eco beach tour in nosy be, highlights of madagascar, 10-day madagascar tour, bike and hike wild madagascar, intrepid travel.

Join travel experts Intrepid Travel for a thrilling 11-day tour around Madagascar.

Intrepid Travel is a world leader in facilitating small-group tours for adventurous travelers, providing tours that take you off the beaten track to experience the very best of your chosen destination.  With over 30 years in business, they have learned a few tricks along the way, so you can be assured you are in expert hands.

They work exclusively with local leaders who delight in sharing their home countries’ best-kept secrets, allowing their guests to get under the skin of the destination they are visiting.

The tour kicks off from the capital Antananarivo.  Meet with your group at 5 pm for a welcome meeting. This energetic city is full of character, with colorful building facades, markets, and cobbled streets.  It is known for its upscale restaurants, so grab some dinner reservations from your guide and head out to experience the city’s vibrant food scene.

Your journey sees you head west toward the Tsiribihina River and the city of Miandrivano. It is a long 12-hour drive to reach your destination, but the travel time is worth it to explore this ecologically important area.

Return to nature as you cruise the delta waters, gliding past mangrove forests and salt flats.  This remote and secluded location offers a peaceful, serene, nature-focused experience soaking in the area’s natural beauty. Experience two and a half-day boat cruise on a traditional flat-bottomed barge. Stop off to see cascading waterfalls and enjoy an overnight camping experience both on the banks of the river and in a local village.

Next, travel to Bekopaka, a town near the southern boundary of the Bemaraha National Park.  Here observe the spectacular natural phenomenon of the ancient karstic landscape.  These limestone needles form a strange yet beautiful terrain that houses patches of dense, dry deciduous forest supporting a wealth of rare wildlife.

Spiking dramatically into the air, the stone forest began forming over 200 million years ago.  The area protects many of Madagascar’s endemic species, from lemurs to reptiles and chameleons.

Spend two days exploring the area.  Visit the small tsingy before taking a leisurely vacation down the Manambolo River in a traditional pirogue, a small wooden canoe.  Take in the dramatic, steep riverside walls and stop at caves on the riverbanks.

Rise early the next day to beat the crowds and the heat to explore the great tsingy.  Traverse suspension bridges, climb amongst towering rock formations and dense forest.  Keep your eyes peeled for leaping lemurs and camouflaged chameleons.  This imposing landscape’s grandiose and otherworldly beauty must be seen to be believed.

From here, head towards the banks of the Mozambique Channel and the seaside town of Morondova.  Arrive as the sun sets to view the avenue of magnificent Babob trees in the most specular lighting.  These giant trees line a dirt road rising tall and proud with mammoth trunks, towering into the sky.  The species is native to Madagascar, and many of these beautiful specimens are estimated to be over 800 years old.

As you make your way back to Antananarivo, stop off at the charming city of Antsirabe, enjoying stops on the way to hike in the verdant Madagascan countryside and marvel a the glimmering green of the emerald-colored volcanic crater lake of Triviva.

This spectacular tour takes in some of Madagascar’s most diverse and remote areas of outstanding natural beauty.  It allows plenty of opportunities to spot the country’s unique wildlife.

If you are looking for a carefully thought-out and well-organized tour with hotel-style accommodations plus a two-night camping experience, this could be just the adventure for you.

The rest of your journey sees you pass through the rural village of Ranomafana, taking a trek en route to see the rolling hills and soaring peak of Mt Ifasina. Explore the surrounding area and the Ranomafana National Park: bursting with orchids, butterflies, and lemurs. On the way to the hotel, stop by a local paper factory to see traditional paper-making methods.

Stop off at the Anja community reserve wildlife hotspots looking out for ring-tailed lemurs.  Spend a full day exploring the savannah landscape of the Isalo National Park and escape from the heat in a natural swimming hole.  Wash the dust and sand off your feet in a pool with a cascading waterfall.  The unforgettable memories of the sun-searched landscapes and glimpses of personality-filled lemurs will stay with you forever.

Join the G Adventure tree-planting program, which is working to create a green corridor to protect the biodiversity of the park and the surrounding area, before heading towards the beachside town of Ifaty.

Hike in the area, or spend the day relaxing on the sand. There are good snorkeling opportunities with a large coral reef off the coast.  The nearby spiny forest makes an interesting trip with its collection of cactuses and baobab trees.  It is a perfect spot for bird watching and spotting chameleons in the trees.
