Osaka Castle (Osakajo)

osaka castle inside tour

The construction of Osaka Castle (, Ōsakajō) started in 1583 on the former site of the Ishiyama Honganji Temple , which had been destroyed by Oda Nobunaga thirteen years earlier. Toyotomi Hideyoshi intended the castle to become the center of a new, unified Japan under Toyotomi rule. It was the largest castle at the time.

However, a few years after Hideyoshi's death, Tokugawa troops attacked and destroyed the castle and terminated the Toyotomi lineage in 1615. Osaka Castle was rebuilt by Tokugawa Hidetada in the 1620s, but its main castle tower was struck by lightening in 1665 and burnt down.

It was not until 1931 that the present ferro-concrete reconstruction of the castle tower was built. During the war it miraculously survived the city-wide air raids. Major repair works gave the castle new glamor in 1997. The castle tower is now entirely modern on the inside and even features an elevator for easier accessibility . It houses an informative museum about the castle's history and Toyotomi Hideyoshi .

The castle tower is surrounded by secondary citadels, gates, turrets, impressive stone walls and moats. The Nishinomaru Garden , encompassing the former "western citadel", is a lawn garden with 600 cherry trees , a tea house, the former Osaka Guest House and nice views of the castle tower from below. Unlike most of the rest of the castle grounds, the garden requires an admission fee.

The entire Osaka Castle Park covers about two square kilometers with lots of green space, sport facilities, a multi-purpose arena (Osakajo Hall) and a shrine dedicated to Toyotomi Hideyoshi . The park is one of Osaka's most popular hanami spots during the cherry blossom season , which usually takes place in early April.

Built by the "Napoleon of Japan," imposing Osaka Castle towers over the city

Osaka Castle is arguably Osaka's most prominent landmark and belies bloody power struggles leading up to the 1603 foundation of the Edo era. While its history dates back to 1583, the landmark main tower that is the castle's icon was only re-constructed in 1931.

Today, the history museum adjacent to the castle documents its rich history, while the surrounding park and green space are a hub for Osakans to jog, cycle and relax.

Osaka Castle: Travel Guide to Japan's Most Visited Castle (History, Tickets, and Things to Do)

Osaka Castle is one of Japan's most famous and historic castles . Located in the center of Osaka City, Osaka Castle was said to have been built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who completed the unification of Japan. "When you come to Osaka, visit here first!" - This seems to be the thought of many tourists from abroad. With the help of our guide, we learned many interesting things about Osaka Castle !

Brief history of Osaka Castle: Said to have been built by Hideyoshi, but actually...

For this article, we joined a tour of Osaka Castle . Today's guide is Mr. Ichiman Masayuki of the Osaka Sightseeing Volunteer Guide Association. The association has prepared several walking tours around the Osaka Castle Park area. The time required is 1 to 2 hours. From the available courses, I chose the "Oteguchi Course," through which we will visit Otemon, Tanzanoucho, Toyokuni Shrine , and more. So exactly what kind of castle is Osaka Castle in the first place?

▲Our guide, Mr. Masayuki Ichiman, on the left.

" Osaka Castle was built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in an area where a temple called Ishiyama Honji once stood," says Mr. Ichiman. Originally, it was written as " Osaka Castle ." A castle tower was built in 1585, and over 15 years, the area around Osaka Castle was completed, boasting a vast measure of space, including the outer regions and citadels. It was a magnificent castle that clearly showed the power of Hideyoshi. However! The current castle is not the one that Hideyoshi made. Actually, it seems to have been built by the Tokugawa Shogunate. The original Osaka Castle was destroyed during the Siege of Osaka in 1615 when the Tokugawa and Toyotomi families clashed. The Tokugawa Shogunate completely infiltrated the castle of the Toyotomi, and built a new one on top of it in the style of the west.

▲This stone wall was built in the era of the 2nd Generation Shogun Tokugawa Hidetada

The castle tower was built in the era of Tokugawa Iemitsu in 1626 by the Tokugawa Shogunate, but in no less than 40 years, it was burned down by a lightning strike. Although it had been left untouched since then, it was rebuilt in 1931 according to the Important Cultural Heritage painting of the castle from the Toyotomi Era titled "Osaka Natsu-no-Jinzu Byobu," with a donation of about 1.5 million yen (in the currency of that time) gathered from citizens. That is what became the Osaka Castle as it now stands.

The Mighty Stone Walls of Otemon

"The highlights of Osaka Castle are the stone walls and the moat," says Mr. Ichiman. The castle tower was built in the Showa Era, but the stone walls and moats were left as-is from the Tokugawa Period. The walls, made from fine stones that were brought in from various parts of Japan, boasts a surprising scale.

▲The Castle Entrance, Otemae

The first thing you will notice at the entrance of the castle "Otemon" is the stone wall near the main gate. Looking at Otemon from the Osakajo Otemae Shibafu Hiroba (the Osaka Lawn Square), you can see how the stones are laid out on the left and right walls of the outer moat are quite different. It seems that the left side towards the gate is stacked randomly while the right side is more orderly.

▲The left-side stone wall. Smaller stones are randomly stacked. In the center are the Sengan-yagura Turrets that defended the main gate from the side.

Why is there such a difference? "Both of them are stone walls of the Tokugawa Period, but the left side is from the building as it was originally constructed, and the right side was constructed about 7 to 8 years after that," explains Mr. Ichiman. The construction of Osaka Castle took ten years, and in that time, the construction technology of the stone walls greatly developed, hence the difference in the way of stacking stones. "Oh, I see!" I think to myself. He really knows a lot about the construction of stone walls.

osaka castle inside tour

Next up is Otemon! I learned a critical point here. There is a complexly shaped "joint" on the right-side pillar. It is said to be the traces of the reparation of an old pillar from the Taisho Era, but even here in Japan, this is the only place that it is done in this way. Nobody understood this structure, and it had been considered a mystery for many years; however, in 1979, it was revealed in a newspaper that only a single carpenter in Kobe City had figured out its structure. It is almost as if it was purposely left behind from the past for us to solve like a puzzle. The restoration technology of the Taisho Era was so complicated.

▲This seemingly unimportant fitting is actually a technique of the craftsmen from the Taisho Era

There's one more thing I learned about Otemon. In the front of the main gate are two giant megaliths for which Osaka Castle is famous. They are called "Ote-mitsuke Ishi" and "Ote-niban Ishi," and are, respectively, the fourth and fifth largest stones in the castle .

▲The fourth largest stone in the castle, "Ote-mitsuke Ishi." Compare it to a person to see its true size!

Popularly known for bringing success in life: the Houkoku Shrine!

If you go through the main gate, you will notice a "dry moat," which has not contained water since the beginning of the castle . Osaka Castle is located on the northern edge of the Uemachi Daichi highlands, so it seems that it was difficult to get water to flow here. Although there is no water, this is still a great photo spot when the cherry blossom trees are in bloom. In the spring , they are pale pink in color, and in fall, you can see the exquisite contrast between the autumn foliage and the moats!

osaka castle inside tour

Right across the moat is the Castle Tower, but I found a wonderful shrine just before that. It is the Houkoku Jinja of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. This is a shrine that has grown rapidly in popularity among young people. It seems that many of them come here to pray for success in work and marriage. When you come to the castle , why not take some time to stop by this shrine as well?

▲The Houkoku Shrine just outside the dry moats. The bronze statue of Toyotomi Hideyoshi is another landmark.

On to the Osaka Castle Tower to See the Shachihoko and the Tiger!

When you pass the Sakura Gate, which is the entrance to the inner citadel, you will see the largest stone in the castle , "Takoshi." The surface area seems to have 36 tatami mats. It is wider than a one-bedroom apartment!

▲ The largest stone in the castle, "Takoishi"

Heading back to Sakura Gate, at last, we reach Osaka Castle Tower. It is so impressive. I had to let out a voice of surprise... "Wow!" On the rooftop floor is a golden Shachihoko sculpture (a creature in Japanese folklore with the head of a tiger and the body of a fish), and on the black wall is a tiger drawn in gold. So this is the castle of Hideyoshi, who unified the land! It has quite a majestic style.

▲Looking up from the bottom you are overtaken by the height of the stone wall and the solid structure of the castle tower

"On top of having the stone walls from the Tokugawa Period, the castle of the Toyotomi Period was reproduced with the highest level construction technology. This is the true figure of the Osaka Castle of today," explains Mr. Ichiman. The Osaka Castle tower may appear old, but the inside is made of concrete. Thanks to this, it didn't burn again, not even during the Pacific War. There is a certain romance to the castle tower of the Showa Period and the stone walls of the Edo Period coexisting beyond the times. And with that, the guided tour comes to an end. Osaka Castle is full of many places of interest. You can also enjoy the guided tour with commentary to learn even more! You can apply for a guided tour online up to 10 days in advance.

Overlooking All of Osaka: Up To the Osaka Castle Tower Observatory!

▲At the entrance of the Castle Tower is the "Kimmeisui Well Roof," which legend has that Hideyoshi once threw gold inside to overcome poisoning of the water. It is said you can see the gold shimmering at the bottom.

Inside Osaka Castle is a museum introducing the castle 's history (¥600, tax included). First, go to the 8th-floor observatory via the elevator or the stairs! From here you can see the city of Osaka. It is fun to view the exhibits of each floor in order starting from the top.

▲It is said that Nobunaga's Azuchi Castle and Hideyoshi's Osaka Castle were the first in Japan to place a gold Shachihoko statue on the roof.

When the weather is nice, you can see Mount Ikoma and Mount Shigi in Nara Prefecture , and Mount Rokko in Hyogo Prefecture from the Castle Tower. From the south side, you can see Abeno Harukas, the tallest skyscraper in Japan. In front of that is where samurai warrior Sanada Yukimura fought during the Siege of Osaka.

▲The tall building on the left is the Abeno Harukas. I wonder if we would have been able to watch the battle from Osaka Castle at that time?

Also worth noting is the "haisuichi," or water distribution pond, spreading out towards the east side of the castle tower. The main tower of the Toyotomi Era was around here. There were also stone walls from Osaka Castle found in the vicinity of this distribution pond from the Toyotomi Period, whose maintenance is now being prepared for public release. There are so many historical romances still buried around here, which is pretty exciting!

▲The Water Distribution Pond where the Osaka Castle of Hideyoshi was found

The Life of Hideyoshi and a Museum of Stories of Toyotomi Osaka Castle

On the 7th floor you can enjoy the "Karakuri Taikoki" exhibit, which shows the life of Toyotomi Hideyoshi using dioramas.

▲Historical diorama "Karakuri Taisho." The characters move in a stereoscopic image, introducing the life and legend of Hideyoshi

On the 5th floor, there is a figurine exhibition called "Miniature Natsu no Jin (Siege of Osaka)" which is based on the famous "Osaka Natsu no Jinzu Byobu" painting. It depicts the famous Battle of Tennoji. Can you find Sanada Yukimura, the samurai warrior who fought in this battle?

▲"Miniature Natsu no Jin" brings this painted scene to life. There are about 307 figurines of soldiers who fought in the Siege of Osaka!

We pass through the 4th and 3rd floor, where the displays change periodically, to the 2nd floor. Here you can wear a replica Sengoku battle helmet in the "Kabuto/Jinbaori Shichaku Taiken Corner" (¥500 per try-on, tax included). The most popular is Hideyoshi's helmet, but due to the influence of the NHK Period Drama "Sanada Maru," Yukimura's helmet stole first place in 2016. Both helmets are pretty cool!

▲Fourth from the front, Yukimura Sanada's helmet is the red one with the deer antlers. On the front of it is his crest, "Rokumonsen."

The Secret Spot Behind Osaka Castle

When you exit the castle tower, please be sure to check out the back of the castle . In the quiet shade where few people are found, a stone monument standing peacefully. This place is said to be a side room of Hideyoshi where his second wife Yodo and their child Hideyori committed suicide. It is also believed that Sanada Yukimura's son Daisuke passed away here.

▲The north side of the castle tower. A moss-covered stone monument stands peacefully

Further down the stairs you will see the Gokuraku Bridge on the north side of the castle tower. Looking up at the main tower from here is also a beautiful view. The peacefulness of the moats and the power of the stone walls here at Osaka Castle will be forever burned into my memory.

▲The Castle Tower as seen from Gokuraku Bridge

While walking through Osaka City, you will often notice Osaka Castle peeking out from between the buildings. But visiting it in person gives you a surprising close-up view of the vast castle grounds and the powerful castle tower. If you have the chance, please be sure to explore the towering stone walls and moats of Osaka Castle .

Tour OSAKA CASTLE, one of Japan’s most cherished landmarks

The Main Tower of the castle was destroyed by fire in 1615 and rebuilt in 1620 with five stories on the outside and eight stories on the inside. But a lightning strike in 1665 destroyed the complex again, and few repairs were made until 1843. Osaka Castle fell for a third and final time in 1868 after most of the castle was burned to the ground. The complex was partially restored in 1931, when the castle was used as an arsenal to manufacture guns and ammunition for Japan’s military, but 1945 raids on the castle during World War II nearly destroyed it again. Osaka Castle ’s last restoration took place in 1997. Since that time, visitors have been touring the premises, particularly during cherry blossom season, to admire remnants of the original stone walls and moat, as well as 13 structures that have been designated as cultural assets by the Japanese government.

1. Beginnings of Osaka Castle

In 1583, a leader named Hideyoshi Toyotomi started building Osaka Castle. He wanted to use Osaka as his main place to bring Japan together.

The building of the castle took almost 15 years to complete. During the early days, the castle had a golden tower that shined beautifully. It was also much bigger back in the day.

2. Destruction and Reconstruction

By 1615, the Toyotomi family failed, which led to the castle being destroyed. Five years later, the Tokugawa shogunate took power. With the new group ruling the place, the rebuilding of the castle began.

The reconstruction lasted for 10 years. One of the major projects during the restoration was making the castle taller. They also added bigger walls and some waterways for extra protection.

3. Later Damages and Restorations

Another disaster hit the castle by 1665. Lightning burned the main tower and damaged several sections. Centuries later, more parts were damaged due to attacks and natural occurrences.

4. 20th Century Efforts

It was in 1931 when Hajime Seki, former mayor of Osaka, focused on the rebuilding of the castle. People from the area donated for the restoration of the main tower.

At the height of World War II, bombings were prevalent. This resulted in some damage to certain parts of the castle.

After the attack of the war, the rehabilitation started. The damaged towers were fixed and a park was built to surround the castle. Further improvements were made in 1997 to mimic how it looked back in the 19 th century.

Osaka Castle is filled with a rich history. It stood the test of time even with the series of damages and restorations. It’s truly an awe-inspiring symbol of the city’s beautiful past.

Osaka Castle Park, or Osaka-jo koen in Japanese, is a large park in the city center spreading on the surface of 2 square km. It is home to the famous Osaka Castle, several gardens and arboretums. It is the perfect place for you to recharge your inner batteries after strolling all day around the city. Osaka Castle Park is a popular hangout spot not only for tourists, but locals alike. You will see here families having a picnic under the trees, kids playing in the playgrounds, people jogging around and couples walking hand-in-hand along the magnificent moats.

The entrance to the park is free and I highly recommend exploring it on your way to the Osaka Castle. Here are some of our favorite places and activities in this green oasis.

Osaka Castle

Osaka Castle is visually stunning from the outside and it is one of the most beautiful castles in Japan. Inside the castle, there’s a museum dedicated to the amazing history of this place. You will be taken on a journey through time via small holographic images depicting the important scenes from the past. Moreover, on the top of the tower there’s a viewing platform that offers incredible views over the whole park and the city. The entrance fee to the castle tower and museum is 600 yen.

Brief history of the Osaka Castle

Osaka Castle, or Osaka-jo in Japanese, was built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in the 16 th century. He started the construction in 1583 and it was finished in 1597. He built the castle on a former site of Ishiyama Honganji Temple that was destroyed by Oda Nobunaga, also known as the Demon King.

Toyotomi Hideyoshi was a Japanese samurai and feudal lord who is also regarded as the second greatest unifier of Japan. The first great unifier was before-mentioned Oda Nobunaga. He wanted the castle to be the centre of new unified Japan and at that time, it was the largest castle in the country. Unfortunately after Hideyoshi’s death it was destroyed and later in the 1665 the main tower was struck by lightning and it burnt down.

It wasn’t until the beginning of the 20 th century when present castle tower was rebuilt and it survived the raids of the WW II.

Miraiza Building

Miraiza Building is located right next to Osaka Castle, on the main square. It is a historical landmark and in the past it served as the military headquarters of the 4 th Division of the Imperial Japanese Army. The unique exterior of the Miraiza Building was based on the majestic old castles of medieval Europe, which gives the whole square a special touch. Over the years it was modernized and renovated, and it was opened for public in October 2017.

Miraiza Building Facilities

Today, you will find many great shops, as well as restaurants inside the Miraiza Building to enhance your experience from your visit to Osaka.

Souvenir Shop

The fairly large souvenir shop is located on the ground floor in the Miraiza Building. Besides the wide range of Osaka Castle related souvenirs, they have also a whole section of ninja and samurai goods. It is a perfect place where you can find something unique to take home with you. Moreover, it is also tax-free.

Restaurants and Cafes

There are several different restaurants within Miraiza building serving Japanese as well western cuisine.

  • Tully’s Coffee – Tully’s is a coffee shop chain that originated in Seattle and they pride themselves in specialty coffee. If you need a break from all the sightseeing, you will find their café on the ground floor.
  • Konamon bar Rikyu – Konamon Bar Rikyu is located on the ground floor and it serves famous Japanese octopus balls/dumplings takoyaki. These gooey balls filled with chunks of octopus are very popular street food that originated in Osaka and it would be a pity if you didn’t give them a go! Besides takoyaki they also serves different desserts and soft serve ice cream.
  • Crossfield – If you are craving something gourmet, on the second floor of Miraiza building is Crossfield restaurant that serves Italian-Asian fusion food. The restaurant has a terrace lounge with views over Osaka castle and the dishes are beautifully arranged to please not only your taste buds, but also your eyes.
  • Raspberry with Moon Bar – Raspberry is a high-end French restaurant that specializes in fresh produce from around Osaka.

Blue Birds Rooftop Terrace

The best feature of Miraiza building is probably its beautiful Blue Birds Rooftop Terrace with panoramic views of Osaka Castle and the park. From spring to fall, there are different events taking place here and they also offer a barbecue buffet. The drinks are only about 500 yen and the view is priceless.

If you would like to visit the rooftop, you have to take the elevator (you cannot take the stairs). The elevators are on the left side of the stairs and you have to go up to “R”.

Osaka castle park

The Osaka Castle Park is cut through with several moats, where you can embark on a scenic cruise in a small golden boat and enjoy the views over the majestic castle from a fresh point of view. You will get close to its massive stone walls that are said to be the tallest in Japan, and see engravings on them that would be normally hidden to your eye.

Tickets and opening hours

The boat tours operate every day from 10:00 with the last cruise leaving at 16:30. The cruise lasts for about 20 minutes and they leave every half hour. The tickets cost 1500 yen for an adult, but if you have purchased the Osaka Amazing Pass , the boat ride will be included in the price of the pass.

Plum tree grove

If you are visiting Osaka at the end of winter from mid-February to early March, you should pay a visit to the plum grove and arboretum. The plum trees have lovely bright pink flowers with sweet scent and they bloom earlier than famous cherry blossoms. In the arboretum you will find over 1000 of them with about a hundred different plum flower varieties.

The garden is located behind the first moat on the east side of the castle (there are signs in English so you will not miss it). It is open 24/7 and there is not extra admission fee.

Seasonal Flowers

In the Osaka Castle Park, you can observe many seasonal flowers growing throughout the year. Starting with the before-mentioned plum trees blooming in February, then at the beginning April you can enjoy thousands of cherry blossoms taking over the whole park, and summer months bring bright pink azaleas and fluffy hydrangeas . The park is also worth to visit in fall to admire stunning autumn foliage.

Hokoku shrine

Hokoku shrine was built in the late 1800s as an honour to the founder of the Osaka Castle – Toyotomi Hideyoshi. It is a small Shinto shrine and because it is very serene, it became a popular place for Japanese couples to get married. If you are lucky you may see a beautiful couple taking their pictures here.

Hokoku Shrine is open daily from 9 am to 5 pm and the entrance is free.

Nishinomaru Garden

Nishinomaru Garden is located behind the West Outer Moat of the Osaka Castle and it has probably the best views on the castle. It is particularly popular during cherry blossom season because the flowers frame the view over the castle and create a stunning view. The garden features large manicured lawn with plenty of sports possibilities and there are over 600 cherry trees that bloom at the end of March and beginning of April. Nishinomaru Garden is, therefore, a great place if you would like to do a hanami picnic in Osaka (hanami means cherry blossom viewing party).

Entrance fees and opening hours to the Nishinomaru Garden

To keep the atmosphere in the garden quaint, you have to pay an extra fee of 200 yen (350 yen during cherry blossom season) to go inside. The garden is open daily from 9 am to 5 pm .

There are over three million LED lights around the castle that attract visitors from all over Japan. Within the garden you will also find food and drink vendors. There are also marked photo spots as well, so you will know where to take the best photos.

1. Osaka Castle: The Symbol of Osaka City

Osaka Castle: Highlights, Bargain Tickets, and Cherry Blossom Info!

Osaka Castle was built as a residence during the second half of the 16th century by Toyotomi Hideyoshi (*1), who was trying to unify Japan during this time. This immense castle―one of Japan's greatest―took over 16 years to be completed.

With the fall of the Toyotomi clan, the Osaka Castle was destroyed by fire. The stone wall and turret (*2) visible today were restored during the Edo Period (1603-1868).

Presently, Osaka Castle is one of Japan's three famous castles , along with Nagoya Castle and Kumamoto Castle . Today, it maintains a strikingly powerful appearance as the symbol of Osaka.

*1 Toyotomi Hideyoshi: a famous military commander during the Sengoku Period (Warring States Period). He rose from the ranks of the common class to become one of Japan's most influential figures.

*2 Yagura: a tall scaffold-like structure referred to as the castle's turret that served as a watchtower.

2. Highlights: Observation Deck and Lighting Events

Exhibition Area

A museum occupies the first-floor entrance to the seventh floor of the tower.

You'll find displays featuring the castle and documents detailing the era of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who built the impressive structure. Exhibits feature a restoration model of Osaka Castle, armor, swords, and a battlefield reenactment with miniature figures.

The displays change seasonally, including special and themed exhibitions. For details, please refer to Osaka Castle's official website .

Observation Deck

The eighth-floor observation area is located 50 meters above the ground. It offers panoramic views of the castle area and Osaka. The observation deck is also barrier-free and welcomes visitors in wheelchairs.

Castle Light-ups After Dusk

Take note that the castle tower is illuminated from dusk until 24:00 . You'll get a close-up of this imposing structure bathed in sparkling white. In addition to the castle tower, indirect lighting is cast upon the gate and the turret, creating a slightly mystical and mysterious space.

3. The Estimated Time Needed To Explore Osaka Castle

In addition to the castle tower, other areas within the castle such as Ninomaru (outer bailey), Honmaru (inner bailey), and Nishinomaru (western bailey) are all expansive. It takes about 90 minutes if you're taking your time to fully explore each section while snapping photos.

The tower―the castle's main section―has various exhibits and a hands-on experience area. Even if you go on a quick tour, you'll still need at least 30 minutes. We also recommend the elevator if you're short on time or it's difficult to move around on your own.

There are also special events at the castle regularly. If you're interested in attending some of these events, be sure to visit when you have plenty of time.

4. Hours, Admission Fees, and Bargain Tickets

Hours of operation.

Osaka Castle is open from 9:00 to 17:00 (last entry at 16:30). Please note that extended hours are in operation during the cherry blossom season, Golden Week, and summer holidays. For the latest updates in 2023, please refer to the official website .

Cherry blossom season (March 25 to April 9, 2023) 9:00 to 18:00 (last entry at 17:30)

Golden Week (Every year from April 29 to May 7) *2023 extended hours are yet to be decided. Every year 9:00 to 18:00 (entry until 17:30)

Admission to Osaka Castle's Tower

The tickets for adult visitors cost 600 yen; junior high school students and under enter for free.

Same-day tickets can also be purchased onsite. If you use the travel experience reservation site, Klook , you can buy tickets online beforehand. We recommend this website to travelers who want to avoid waiting in lines and enter the castle smoothly.

In addition to the castle, visitors interested in the Osaka Museum of History can buy a reasonable 1,000-yen ticket that includes both attractions.

There is also a 2,000-yen ticket combining the Osaka Castle tower and the Osaka Aqua mini , a river cruise (*3). Please find the bargain ticket that matches your sightseeing plan.

*3 Osaka Aqua mini + Osaka Castle Tower Set Ticket: unavailable during the busy season from late March to mid-April.

Starting from spring 2025, the ticket prices for high school and university students will increase to 600 Japanese yen, while adult tickets will rise to 1200 Japanese yen, effectively doubling the current prices.

The main reason for this increase is the expected opening of an exhibit showcasing the first castle stone wall facility built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in the spring. As a result, the pricing will be adjusted by combining it with the admission fee for the main keep.

Our Recommendation for Getting to Osaka Castle

Four gates connect Sannomaru to Ninomaru: Ootemon Gate, Kyobashiguchi Gate, Aoyamon Gate, and Tamatsukurimon Gate.

Whichever gate you use to enter Ninomaru will eventually lead you to Honmaru, but we strongly recommend entering through Ootemon Gate , which is closest to the Tanimachi 4-Chome Station via the Tanimachi Subway Line.

Although some websites recommend getting off at Osaka-jo Station, this means you will most likely enter Osaka Castle through Aoyamon Gate . Historically, this gate primarily functioned as an emergency exit  and was not even used for a long time because the gate faces northeast, an ominous direction in feudal Japan.

The two other gates that guard Ninomaru, Kyobashi, and Tamatsukuri lost their turrets in massive fires during the war and have become shadows of their former selves.

osaka castle inside tour

That being said, it would be nice to walk around Sannomaru if you have plenty of time to explore the castle. In Sannomauru many things tell the long history of Osaka Castle such as Osaka Arsenal.

In fact, after the Meiji Era, Osaka Castle became the property of the Japanese military. The castle eventually came to house what was probably the largest weapons factory in East Asia. The factory produced everything from guns to cannons and was the principal reason Osaka became a target during WWII.

One of the few buildings left from the military’s time at Osaka Castle is the chemical testing center.

osaka castle inside tour

If you come to Osaka Castle in spring, sakura is beautiful near Ootemon Gate. Also, Osaka Castle has one of the biggest plum gardens in Osaka near Tamatsukurimon Gate. Make sure to check them out!

osaka castle inside tour

Once you get off at Tanimachi 4-Chome Station, Ootemon Gate is right in front of you.

As you are entering Ootemon Gate look to your left and you will see a turret called Sengan-yagura . This turret was built in 1620 and is one of the oldest buildings in Osaka Castle. This turret allowed soldiers to attack intruders approaching from either side of Ootemon Gate.

Actually, several turrets in Osaka Castle date back to the Edo period, when Tokugawa Ieyasu rebuilt Osaka Castle, thus registered as a National Cultural Property.

osaka castle inside tour

After passing Ootemon, it is Ninomaru. Although it could require a lot of energy to walk around Sannomaru,  we highly recommend walking around Ninomaru so that you can see the castle from the best angle. Not to mention that it takes only 10-15 minutes to walk around the entire Ninomaru.

osaka castle inside tour

If you remember from our article about the Ishiyama Hongan-ji monks , you will recall that they occupied where Osaka Castle stands long before any of the incarnations of the castle were erected. Though nothing remains about Ishiyama Honjan-ji Temple, archaeologists, and historians have been able to piece together that the temple likely stood in Ninomaru.

osaka castle inside tour

Just after the Hongan-ji monument, you will see Karabori Moat. But the moat is empty!

This moat has been empty ever since the very first version of the castle. Some speculate that this moat was  another defensive countermeasure meant to lure enemy platoons, ultimately making them easier to kill. Scaling the castle wall would also have been much more difficult from that side of the moat as well.

osaka castle inside tour

If you walk a little bit more, you will see Sakuramon, the main gate for Honmaru. Unfortunately, the military had to rebuild this gate after it burned down in 1868. Just as you approach the gate you will see a large stone called octopus stone because it has a octopus pattern on it.

Honmaru and Castle Tower

The Keep of Osaka Castle was built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1583 after he successfully conquered Japan. However, after Hideyoshi’s death, Tokugawa Ieyasu quickly gained power and eradicate all traces of Hideyoshi by ordering them to bury anything remaining of the previous Hideyoshi’s castle. Tokugawa started the construction of Osaka Castle on top of Hideyoshi’s once-grand castle and completed his version of Osaka Castle in 1629.

However, in 1660, there was a huge explosion when lightning struck. The massive explosion blew most of the castle tower to pieces and burned down many of the structures in Honmaru.

After the explosion, the castle’s main tower was not rebuilt for nearly 300 years. It was only in 1931 that the castle was rebuilt, together with The 4th Division Headqurater. The funding, surprisingly,  had almost entirely come from donations made by the city’s residents.

osaka castle inside tour

The current version of Osaka Castle combines the two previous castles by building a replica of Hideyoshi’s palace on top of the stone wall left from the Tokugawa Period.  Also, Hideyoshi’s cattle were said to be entirely black, meaning this keep might not be true to history.

In 1886, the military brought part of Wakayama Castle, called Kishu Goten, to Osaka Castle. Despite surviving the onslaught of WWII, Kishu Goten caught fire shortly after the war. This Japanese-style garden sitting near the front of the castle is all that remains of Kishu Goten.

Everybody tries to take a photo of the castle from the front, but the best spot to take a photo is from the garden in the west of the keep.

osaka castle inside tour

Inside the castle is rather a museum exhibiting the history of the castle. If you know very little about Japanese history, you may not be able to understand all the exhibits in the museum.

However, when you do reach the top, you can enjoy the panoramic view of the city.

osaka castle inside tour

Yamazato Maru

From the back of the castle, the path leads to  Ninomaru via Yamazato Maru and Gokurakubashi Bridge.

During the Siege of Osaka Hideyoshi’s second wife, Yodo, and his son Hideyori watched in horror as their castle burned. Rather than face imprisonment, banished, or worse, it was in Yamazatomaru that they decided to commit suicide, thus ending the Toyotomi clan forever.

osaka castle inside tour

After you finish Yamazato Maru, you will see the Gokurakubashi Bridge. Gokurakubashi Bridge might look unimpressive now, but in Hideyoshi’s day, it was once covered elaborate roof and decorative gate. After Hideyoshi’s death, the gate went to Hougon-ji Temple on Chikubushima Island in Lake Biwa.

Nestled amidst the vibrant cityscape of Osaka Japan , the castle stands as a symbol of resilience and architectural brilliance, inviting visitors to delve into its storied past and explore treasures inside Osaka Castle. From its meticulously reconstructed Osaka Castle interior to the serene park that surrounds it, every facet of Osaka Castle resonates with historical significance and cultural depth.

Join me on an immersive journey as we explore the Osaka castle’s interiors, uncover its intriguing exhibits, and wander through the tranquil gardens that envelop this historic treasure. Let’s embark on an adventure through time, discovering the legacy and allure of Osaka Castle—one of Japan’s most cherished and revered landmarks.

Osaka Castle Tower

History of Osaka Castle

Introduction to Osaka Castle’s Historical Background

Osaka Castle stands as a profound symbol of Japan’s rich history, revered for its pivotal role in the country’s past. Originally constructed in the 16th century by Toyotomi Hideyoshi , one of Japan’s most influential warlords, the castle was envisioned as a beacon of power and prestige. Hideyoshi started the construction of Osaka Castle in 1583 on the site of the former Ishiyama Honganji Temple. He intended the castle to serve as a symbol of his power and authority, as well as a stronghold to control the newly unified country.

Early Years

In its early years the castle underwent several phases of reconstruction, notably after the tumultuous periods of war and destruction. Despite facing extensive damage during various conflicts, including the Siege of Osaka in the 17th century, subsequent rulers and the people of Osaka diligently rebuilt the castle to preserve its cultural and historical significance.

Significance

Osaka Jo holds a pivotal place in Japan’s history, reflecting various epochs of triumphs, conflicts, and cultural evolution. Osaka Castle not only served as a formidable fortress but also played a crucial role in shaping Japan’s political landscape. It stood witness to pivotal moments in history, reflecting the resilience and spirit of the Japanese people during times of upheaval and transformation.

Feudal Power and Unity

Originally built as a symbol of power and unity during Japan’s feudal period, Osaka Castle represented the stronghold of influential leaders and served as a strategic center for governance. Its construction and strategic significance highlight the feudal era’s dynamics and the quest for territorial control. As a tangible link to the past, its walls have withstood the tests of time, witnessing pivotal moments in Japanese history.

Architectural Marvels of Osaka Castle

Approaching from the Osaka station the outline of Osaka Castle revealed itself majestically against the skyline speaking volumes of the mesmerizing blend of traditional Japanese architecture and strategic brilliance.

A bridge over the moat that surrounded the castle led us to the gates of the Osaka Jo. I was reminded of moats built so thoughtfully making it difficult for intruders to infiltrate castles and forts like in Verona Italy and Vellore India . The thick, high walls was built in the past to protect people during wars and battles.

Boating in the moat seemed like a popular thing to do in Castillo de Osaka. The castle’s towering walls along the moat and fortified structures, immediately transported me back to an era of grandeur and power.

Pro tip: The main gate to Osaka Castle is called Sakuramon Gate . The ticket counter for tickets to castle is after this gate. A detailed tour inside Osaka castle can take more than an hour, the queue can take more than hour too and the ticket is valid only for the day of purchase. So, jump into the queue if you have that much time in hand.

What is inside Osaka Castle

The Osaka Castle interior offers a captivating journey through history, blending modern museum exhibits with the castle’s original structure to provide visitors with an immersive experience. It is said to be 8 floors of museum inside Osaka Castle but there are actually 7, as it doesn’t have 6th floor.

There is an elevator for those who find it difficult to climb stairs. Stairs (2 sets, one for going up, another to descend) can be quite crowded at times. I felt a little claustrophobic here. Do plan to keep sufficient time in hand if you wish to explore all the exhibits inside Osaka Castle. After my trip to Odawara Castle I was more prepared to explore Osaka Jo. Here’s an overview:

Main Keep: Stepping into the main keep of Osaka Castle, we felt like we were entering a time capsule. The rich tapestry of Japan’s history is displayed in a multi-floor museum. As we ascended through the floors of the castle’s museum, each level revealed a different chapter of its past, unveiling the story of its construction, strategic importance, and the people who shaped its destiny.

Basement Levels: The lower floors inside Osaka Castle often display artifacts, weapons, and exhibits detailing the castle’s construction, defenses, and its role in various historical conflicts.

Upper Floors: Moving upward, we got to see the displays chronicling significant events, the lives of feudal lords, and key moments in Japanese history, including the Siege of Osaka and the castle’s reconstruction.

Osaka City

Exhibits inside Osaka Castle

The museum exhibits a diverse array of historical items, including armor, weaponry, paintings, and documents from different periods. We saw for the first time the intricate samurai armor , swords, ancient maps, and other relics that offer insights into the castle’s past.

Some sections of Osaka Castle inside feature interactive displays, such as multimedia presentations and models, providing a more engaging and informative experience. These exhibits often delve into the architectural design, strategic significance, and cultural impact of Osaka Castle.

At the top levels of the castle, there are observation decks offering panoramic views of Osaka. These vantage points provide stunning vistas of the city skyline. It was amazing to see the modern landscape juxtaposed against the historical surroundings.

The interior architecture of Osaka Castle itself is a marvel, with wooden beams, lattice windows, and intricate details showcasing traditional Japanese craftsmanship. The spacious interiors, designed to accommodate the feudal lord and his retinue, offer a glimpse into the lifestyle and grandeur of that era.

Throughout the Osaka Castle interior, amenities such as rest areas, gift shops, and informative signages contribute to visitors’ convenience and understanding of the castle’s significance.

Your Osaka Travel Guide

  • Osaka Castle Area

Osaka Castle and Osaka Castle Park form the most attractive part of Osaka and should be high on any visitor’s list. Nearby, there are some great restaurants and hotels, making it a good place to stay.

Osaka Castle Area

Sitting about a kilometer to the east of Osaka’s two downtowns ( Kita and Minami ), the Osaka Castle area is the tourist heart of the city. Built around the awe-inspiring tower of Osaka Castle , this green and spacious expanse provides a pleasant escape from the otherwise crowded and concrete expanses of the rest of the city. Easily reached by the JR Osaka Loop Line, two subway lines and the private Keihan Line (good for those coming from Kyoto), this area is good for a morning or afternoon in Osaka. In the Tanimachi area to the west of the castle, you’ll find lots of reasonably priced hotels and some excellent restaurants, making this a decent place in which to be based.

Things to See and Do in Osaka Castle Area

  • Osaka Castle (castle) Osaka Castle (known as Osaka-jo in Japanese) is the city’s premier tourist attraction, and with good reason: It’s a stunning sight, rising up and commanding the skyline of the entire east side of the city. The original castle was completed in 1583 and was attacked and destroyed several times, most recently during air raids during WWII. The present castle is a concrete reconstruction that was finished in 1995.
  • Osaka Castle Park (park) The spacious park surrounding Osaka Castle (known as Osakajo-koen in Japanese) is superb and well worth a visit, even if you don’t intend to enter the castle. There are often street performers and free concerts on the grounds of the park. When the cherries blossom in late March and early April, the park is mobbed with people having hanami (cherry blossom viewing) parties. It’s a lot of fun and we recommend joining the fun.
  • Osaka Museum of History (museum) At the southwest corner of Osaka Castle Park and very close to Tanimachiyonchome Station, on the Tanimachi subway line, this history museum makes a nice add-on to a castle visit. It’s not the best organized or best signposted (in English, at least) museum around, but it’s definitely worth a visit for those who want to learn a bit more about Osaka. The museum occupies the 7th to 10th floors of the sail-shaped building near the park.
  • Naniwa-no-Miya Palace Ruins (ruins) Looking for another urban green space that’s not too crowded? A short walk from Osaka Castle leads you to the Naniwa-no-Miya Palace Ruins - arguably Osaka’s best secret park. It’s a great place to kick back and relax.

  • Nishihara (unagi; moderate) A short walk east of Osaka Castle Park, this unagi (eel) specialist serves a mouth-watering version of this classic Japanese dish. Unadon (unagi over rice) costs around Y2,000 at lunch. Look for the kanji for eel on the sign: 鰻.
  • Menya Ageha (ramen; budget) For tasty and meaty ramen within walking distance of Osaka Castle Park, try this popular local eatery. It’s casual and easy to enter. The name is written in English on the sign.
  • Mannenkare (curry; budget) This unusual shop specializes in tonkotsu (pork bone) curry (it’s better than it sounds). If you’re a fan of Japanese curry rice, then you’ll probably love this place. Look for the yellow sign with the name written in English in small letters on it. It’s not too far from Osaka Castle Park.
  • Tokumasa Udon (udon; budget) Near the southeast corner of Osaka Castle Park, this restaurant serves a mean bowl of curry udon, a spicy and filling dish that’s perfect for powering you through a day of sightseeing. Look for 得正 (Tokumasa) on the sign.

Visiting a castle is a great way to learn about Japan’s culture and traditions, as well as its architecture. Japan has many spectacular castles that were built between the 12th and 19th centuries. Most of them have been converted into museums where visitors can explore their interiors and exteriors in detail. For example, Osaka Castle stands out for its striking five-story donjon (main tower), which was reconstructed after it burned down during World War II. Inside, visitors will find displays of armor and weapons used by samurai warriors as well as artwork depicting scenes from Japanese history. The Himeji Castle is another popular destination due to its distinctive white exterior walls that gave it the nickname “White Heron Castle” or Shirasagi-jo in Japanese. It features 83 buildings within the grounds including two towers—the main keep with five stories and an adjacent three-story tower known as Gojoten Jinja Tower—along with several gates and turrets on different levels throughout the complex.

Visiting Osaka Castle at night is a unique way to experience one of Japan’s most iconic landmarks. Although the castle grounds are not illuminated and do close at 5 pm, there are still ways to appreciate this majestic structure after dark. First, you can take in the beauty of Osaka Castle from afar by taking an evening boat tour or visiting nearby areas that offer excellent views of the castle lit up against the night sky. This is especially magical during cherry blossom season when pink petals fill the air around it, creating a beautiful contrast with its white walls and golden roof tiles. There are also plenty of restaurants near the castle that offer alfresco dining with great views so you can enjoy dinner while admiring its grandeur from afar. The second option is to attend one of the special events held by Osaka City throughout the year such as fireworks displays or light-up shows which provide an opportunity to see this historic site illuminated in all its glory. Osaka Castle is an iconic landmark in Japan and one of the country’s most important historical sites. For centuries, Osaka Castle was home to a number of powerful samurai clans and influential families who had close ties with the ruling shogunate. From time to time, it also served as a strategic military base during times of war or political conflict. The first ruler of Osaka Castle was Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who built the castle in 1583 after unifying all of Japan under his rule. He lived there until his death in 1598. After Hideyoshi’s death, Tokugawa Ieyasu took over control of the castle and ruled from there until 1615 when he moved his administration to Edo (modern-day Tokyo). During this period, several key figures lived at Osaka Castle including Matsudaira Tadakatsu – one of Ieyasu’s top generals – as well as Mori Terumoto – another powerful daimyo (feudal lord) from Western Japan who became closely associated with the Tokugawa family following Ieyasu’s death in 1616. Both men were responsible for protecting and defending Osaka Castle during times of unrest or warfare.

If you are planning to visit one of Japan’s most iconic landmarks, then the Osaka Castle Entrance Fee is something you will want to be aware of. The castle stands proudly as a monument to Japanese history and culture, so it should come as no surprise that there is an entrance fee in order to enter the grounds. The ticket prices for entering Osaka Castle depends on several factors such as what type of ticket and how many people in your group. There are two main types of tickets: regular admission and special packages. Regular Admission prices range from ¥600 ($5 USD) for adults aged 18-64, ¥300 ($3 USD) for children aged 6-17 years old, and free admission for children 5 years old or younger with a guardian accompanying them. Special packages offer discounts on admission fees depending on the package purchased; these include family packages which can reduce the price per person significantly if multiple people are visiting together. Group rates are also available if there are more than 20 people in your party – contact the visitor center directly before arriving at the castle gates to inquire about group discount rates or other deals they may have available. Additionally, some museums inside Osaka Castle (such as “Osaka Museum of History”) have separate entrance fees which must be paid before entry into those specific attractions within the castle grounds.

Yes, you can! Osaka Castle is one of the most iconic landmarks in Japan and it’s definitely worth a visit. It was built in 1583 by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, a great unifier of Japan, as his headquarters during his campaign to expand the nation. Today, visitors can explore its grounds while admiring its many impressive features such as the five-story castle tower, beautiful gardens and moats. Inside the castle is an interesting museum where you can learn about its history and view artifacts from that era. There are plenty of activities like sword fighting demonstrations and historical performances for everyone to enjoy too! So why not make your way to Osaka Castle today?

So what’s inside Osaka Castle? Is it worth the price of admission?

Historic site Osaka Castle Osaka Castle Area Observatory Building Museum

Ever wonder what’s inside Osaka Castle’s main tower ? Some people visit Osaka Castle Park and never go inside. Tons of people ask “Is it worth the price of admission?”

Osaka Castle is so beautiful viewed from the outside, and the interior isn’t the original. So why would you bother going inside? Well, let me show you…

  • First, a little history
  • Getting there
  • All the accessories—Gates, Turrets, & Stone Walls
  • Inside the tower—Museum Exhibits
  • So is it worth the price of admission?

■ First, a little history

Osaka Castle was created during a very tumultuous and climactic point in Japanese history that has captured the attention of scholars and elementary school students alike. There are three big names you need to know to understand this period—Oda Nobunaga (1534–1582), Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1537–1598), and Tokugawa Ieyasu (1543–1616). The personalities of these three very powerful men, or rather their methods of dominating and uniting the country, are often summed up with this saying (translated from Japanese):

osaka castle by Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Tokugawa Ieyasu

Just two years later, Nobunaga was killed during a turn of events at Honnoji Temple in Kyoto and it was Toyotomi Hideyoshi who avenged his death, thus seizing control of Nobunaga’s massive territory. The following year, in 1583, the original Osaka Castle (Toyotomi’s Castle) was built near the site of the former Ishiyama Honganji Temple in Osaka under orders from Toyotomi Hideyoshi.

The other important figure—Tokugawa Ieyasu—while often aligned on the same side of battle as Hideyoshi, he was a major rival and was sent to live in Edo, a small fishing village far from the seat of power. This small out-of-the-way village eventually grew into modern-day Tokyo. Ieyasu plotted for years before seizing control of the Shogunate in 1600 after Hideyoshi’s death and eventually defeated Hideyoshi’s descendants and their loyalist forces at Osaka in 1615. Thus the first Osaka Castle was destroyed.

In 1620 the Tokugawa shogunate began reconstructing a second version of the castle, a major effort that took 10 years to complete. The main building of this castle, was also unfortunately lost to history when it was struck by lightning in 1665. Remaining structures were destroyed further as the years wore on.

Finally, in 1931 the main castle was again rebuilt and the area around it was later opened as a public park. This third rendition of the tower shares elements of both versions of the previous Osaka Castles, but heavily resembles the Ieyasu castle keep. Which is so surprising! We think of Osaka Castle as the stronghold of the Toyotomi clan, but the castle we see today is actually a reconstruction of the castle built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s greatest enemy!

Sadly, photography is prohibited on the 3rd and 4th floors of the museum. So please use your imagination. Here you can see miniature models of the two different versions of Osaka Castle—the older castle built under Toyotomi Hideyoshi and the second version built under the Tokugawa regime. The styles are very visibly different and fun to compare.

On this floor you’ll also see the famed golden tea room. Hideyoshi was known for his showy taste and affinity for gold. He had a tea room constructed almost entirely of gold. Everything in the room glistens gold—the screen doors, the traditional ceiling, the trays—everything but the tea whisk!

As you wind around the displays, you can also admire various sets of samurai armor. Imagine walking onto a battle field dressed in something so ornate. Each helmet is different and seems bring each suit of armor to life.

If your timing is good you might even get to see Hideyoshi’s Mt. Fuji surcoat on display. Made of imported wool, the coat bears a stylish asymmetrical depiction of Mt. Fuji that appears almost gold against a black background. It’s very stylish and incredible to imagine such a powerful historical figure wearing the clothing that’s right before your eyes.

■ So is it worth the price of admission?

I think so! Do you like history? Want to imagine what it would have been like to peer out over the castle domain some 400+ years ago? Want to see an actual surcoat worn by Toyotomi Hideyoshi?

If you answered yes to any of those questions, then ABSOLUTELY visit the museum! The museum is only ¥600 for adults and free for those junior high school age and younger. You can get a small discount ticket if you purchased a one-day Osaka Metro pass. You can also save a few yen with a discounted ticket like the Osaka History Museum and Osaka Castle Museum set ticket for ¥1,000 or the Suijo Bus and Osaka Castle Museum ticket for ¥2,000. Admission is free if you have purchased the Osaka Amazing Pass .
