I had a fantastic time on my tour. Prince and Wellington were brilliant CEO's ensuring we all had a great time. The food was brilliant and Prince always ensured I had gluten free meals and another girl always had a veggie option. Wellington was a brilliant driver and always ensuring the Lando was taken care of and stayed calm when there were any technical issues. Both CEO's were full of useful information, Welly knew lots about animals which was great in Etosha. There was a lot of driving but the CEO's ensured we had regular comfort and photo breaks. At times there was no water at the camp sites but the CEO's tried to get this sorted for us. I really like the Lando and am glad we had this vehicle and not one like other tours such as Intripid. I ended the tour in Windhoek, it may have been useful to have a full day in Windhoek to allow for sightseeing and to give the CEO's time to prepare for the next leg of the trip and sort out any issues - for example Lando problems. I will definatly look to travel with G adventures in Africa again and would be more then happy to have Prince and Welly as my CEO's. I would recommend the tour to people.

Cape and Namibia Adventure
A great tour with an action packed itinerary. A couple of long travel days but that’s to be expected in such a vast country. We saw and experienced a wide range of environments and activities in a very short time frame. Our guide was excellent! Very knowledgeable, friendly and professional. We were really looked after.

7-Day Namibia Safari Tours
Namibia never disappoints. There is beauty wherever you go. Sossusvlei, with its huge red dunes, is one of Africa’s most iconic destinations. The Fish River Canyon is second only in size to the Grand Canyon. The Skeleton Coast, littered with shipwrecks and home to large seal colonies, is refreshingly wild. Etosha National Park’s pans are a magnet for wildlife in the Dry season, but tracking desert elephants and black rhinos in Damaraland offers a different kind of wildlife experience. No wonder Namibia is a photographer’s dream. To do these landscapes justice, go out in the golden hours of early morning and late afternoon, when the sun is low in the sky. You’ll get better pictures and truly feel the magic of this extraordinary place.

6 Questions About 7-Day Namibia Safaris
Answered by
Ariadne van zandbergen.
What can I expect from a 7-day Namibia safari?
“A Namibia safari is as much about the landscapes as the wildlife. The striking desert environment doesn’t support the wildlife densities of some other safari destinations. However, with such sparse vegetation, sightings tend to be excellent. The one exception is Etosha NP in the Dry season. Here you can see lots of wildlife together at the waterholes. The highlights of Namibia are spread out and you should expect a fair amount of driving time on a 7-day safari. That is, unless you opt for a fly-in safari where you hop between destinations by small aircraft. Driving time in Namibia is never wasted though. You’ll get to appreciate the vast open spaces and endless horizons. The daily routine of a 7-day Namibia safari consists of getting out and about early in the morning and late afternoon. Especially when looking for wildlife on game drives. The middle of the day is hot and animals become less active and hide in the shade. When staying 2 or more nights in a lodge, you get a chance to relax when you get back from your morning excursion. Afternoons are usually spent exploring again. You might get back to the lodge before dusk or even after dark if you are doing a night drive where you look for nocturnal animals by spotlight.”
Where should I go on a Namibia trip?
“A popular 7-day itinerary includes stays at Windhoek, the capital city, Sossusvlei in the Namib Desert, the coastal town of Swakopmund and Etosha NP. On this tour you can also visit Walvis Bay for its flamingos, pelicans and other birdlife, and Cape Cross for its seal colony. You can add a stop in Damaraland, especially on a fly-in safari. Here you can see some of the best rock art in southern Africa at Twyfelfontein. If you get a chance to go deeper into this magnificent wild area, you’ll have the opportunity to see desert elephants. Another option is to head south from Windhoek to one of the most impressive viewpoints in the country, the Fish River Canyon. This can be combined with stops in Tsau //Khaeb National Park, Sossusvlei and Swakopmund. There are obviously lots of different options and you’ll have to make some hard choices when going on a 7-day Namibia safari. If you’re going on a road trip (self-drive or guided), you should avoid trying to cover too much distance.”
What kinds of tours are available for a Namibia safari?
“There are different ways to travel in Namibia on a one-week safari. You can book a private tour or a shared tour. If you’re not a group person, private might work best for you. It also gives you the most flexibility. Your guide won’t have to consider other travelers, so they can discuss the daily program with you and accommodate your wishes where possible. However, shared tours are great fun and a good opportunity to meet people sharing your love for travel. And group tours are usually more cost-effective than private tours. When booking a shared tour, always check the maximum number of people and the vehicle used. Larger groups often travel in overland trucks, while groups of up to six or eight people usually get around in a minivan or 4x4 vehicle. If you feel adventurous and you like more independence on your travels, you can consider booking a self-drive safari. Namibia is a very safe country and self-drive holidays are popular here. While it is possible to rent a vehicle and make your own travel arrangements, many visitors prefer to leave the planning to the experts. This doesn’t only save you time, it also ensures that travel distances are realistic and bookings are confirmed. This kind of package usually includes 24/7 road assistance in case of a breakdown or any other problem.”
Should I choose a fly-in or road safari?
“When booking a 7-day Namibia tour, you should think about whether a fly-in or road safari is most suitable for you. Both have pros and cons to consider. There are many 7-day road safaris available in Namibia. One week isn’t a lot of time for a Namibia safari and you can expect to be spending quite a lot of time driving between destinations. The long drives can be tiring, but covering distance gives you a chance to appreciate the scenery and the emptiness of this beautiful country. However, the main advantage of a road safari is that it is cheaper than a fly-in safari. If you want to save valuable time on a 7-day Namibia safari, a fly-in safari is a good choice. It allows you to spend more time at prime locations without having to schedule overnight stops between highlights. Fly-in packages are usually tied in with luxury accommodation. In some cases these lodges are in remote locations and offer a high level of exclusivity. Even if you can’t afford a full fly-in safari, you can consider combining a road safari with a stay in one of the country’s remote fly-in lodges.”
What is the best time of the year for a Namibia trip?
“Namibia has a dry desert climate and can be visited throughout the year. Overall the best time for wildlife viewing is from June to October, the middle and end of the Dry season. Etosha NP, in particular, is a very seasonal park. During these months, animals gather around the waterholes and sightings tend to be phenomenal. Once the rains start, animals disperse and the viewing is more hit-and-miss. The Wet season, especially from November to February, is usually very hot and humid. April and May are lovely months in Namibia. As the rains subside, temperatures are mild and the scenery is green and crisp. Even when traveling in the Wet season, rainfall is sporadic. It usually comes in afternoon thunderstorms, which can be refreshing as the temperatures drop temporarily. December to April is the low season and you might get discounted packages during these months.”
How much will a 7-day Namibia safari cost?
“You can expect a starting price of US$1,000 per person for a 7-day shared camping tour, going up to US$3,000 per person for a mid-range private tour. Fly-in tours start at around US$4,500 per person. There are a lot of factors that determine the cost of a safari in Namibia. The most budget-friendly option is to join a group camping tour. These are a lot of fun, but there is some lovely accommodation to choose from, and staying in safari lodges can be part of the experience. There are lodges in different price brackets offering different levels of luxury and comfort. Most popular is mid-range accommodation at competitive prices. Whether you’re going for a mid-range or luxury tour, you should consider traveling out of the high season. You’ll probably get a better deal at this time; the scenery is lusher and the parks are less busy. Be warned though that animals in Etosha NP are scattered and harder to find at that time. Once you’ve narrowed down your priorities, get a few quotes before making a final decision. ”

Top Points of Interest in Namibia
Exoticca’s Namibia vacation packages offer the ideal blend of scheduled tours and free exploration . Take advantage of the free time in your itinerary to explore the diverse culture and rich history of the “land of the brave”. Namibia certainly has enough to offer that you’ll be sharing stories for years to come.
Etosha National Park
With Namibia safari tours, Etosha National park should be on everyone’s bucket list. It is among the top destinations for spotting abundant wildlife , namely elephants and rhinos.
Bird watchers are in for a treat at Namutoni Spring, where you can spot an array of rare and vibrant avian species . Some to look out for include the crimson-breasted shrieks and violet-eared waxbills.
Spot the Big Four (elephants, rhinos, lions, and leopards) at the Moringa and Okaukuejo waterholes. You may also glimpse various kudu, giraffe and gemsbok species.
Did you know that the animals have a vibrant nightlife too? Take a night Namibian safari tour during the warmer seasons to see a fantastic display at the watering holes.
Interact with the Hai|| Om San hunter-gatherer tribe to learn about the rich culture and biodiversity of the Etosha region . As inhabitants of the land that date back thousands of years, they’ll share their knowledge about the park’s history, geography, and animals.
Skeleton Coast and Cape Cross
The Skeleton Coast may seem intimidating with its unwelcoming weather and the shipwrecks and animal skeletons seen across the landscape, but don’t let it fool you. This picturesque land has a rich history and breathtaking views .
Enjoy a scenic flight over the area to fully appreciate the majestic view of the Namib desert meeting the Atlantic Ocean . On a clear day, you’ll also see the remains of shipwrecks over the years because of the rough waters and sharp rocks.
Be sure to pay a visit to Cape Cross, home to over 200,000 Cape fur seals . Bring extra clothing with, though as it’s possibly one of the smelliest places in all of Namibia. Don’t say we didn’t warn you!
The Save the Rhino Trust, located outside the Skeleton Coast Park, protects the last remaining free-roaming black rhinos in Namibia . Stop by the Trust’s Ugab Base Camp near the Brandberg mountain to spot these endangered animals.
For the ultimate in Namibian adventure tours, a hike along the Ugab and Huab Riverbed terrain is not to be missed. This exquisite area is known for its ancient rock art and other historical findings .
Now a ghost town of German architecture, Kolmanskop is famed for the buildings being overtaken by sand dunes . What was once a bustling mining settlement is now a deserted town and popular tourist attraction and inspiration for budding photographers.
A preferred stop on many of the best Namibia tours, Swakopmund steals the hearts of anyone who visits the town. The beautiful coastal town caters to every traveler’s desire —adventure, history, culture, nature, or a tranquil getaway.
The coastal town was the hub of German colonialism in Namibia , increasing traffic between the two countries. As with many locations across the country, the name given by local inhabitants describes what the town is known for. In this case, Swakopmund is at the mouth (“mund”) of the Swakop River.
The weather is typically harsh in this area, but often becomes more pleasant during the day. A cold and misty morning could end with a glorious sunset cocktail at the beachside restaurant, Tiger Reef or a Jetty stroll. Temperatures change drastically, so always be prepared .
Swakopmund welcomes approximately 200,000 visitors each year , meeting every desire. Experience a thrilling adventure by skydiving over the desert or a quad bike or camel-back tour of the dunes.
Immerse yourself in the rich local history and culture at the Mole Museum and informal settlement tours. Enjoy the German cuisine and other local dishes at the oldest pub in town, Kücki’s Pub and Grill.
Namib Desert
Famed as the oldest desert in the world , the name “Namib” translates to “vast place”—an aptly assigned name. The dramatically beautiful landscape of this coastal desert is an UNESCO World Heritage Site.
We recommend Namibian escorted tours in this area as it's challenging to navigate and easy to get lost. This “vast place” encompasses Namibia’s entire coastline, with the largest dune reaching as high as 1,256ft (383m) .
This unique desert is home to more endemic wildlife than any other location worldwide . Through living desert Namibia group tours, you’ll discover and learn all about species like the dune lark, Herero chat, Namib day gecko, Grant’s golden mole and many more.
Enjoy Namibia tours through the Namib-Naukluft National Park, namely Sossusvlei, the most famous attraction in the country . Marshes and pools formed among the dunes formed the area. The area is dry most of the time with only cracked clay and acacia trees left behind—known as Deadvlei, a popular shooting location for movies.
For dune boarding and climbing adventures, head over to Dune 45. It’s a relatively small dune, ideal for those who aren’t up for the fitness challenge, but provides breathtaking views of the Tsauchab corridor from the top .
Hidden Gems of Namibia
When you book a vacation with Exoticca, it doesn’t mean that adventure tours in Namibia are your only option. Knowledgeable locals carefully curated our itineraries to give you the freedom to enjoy Namibia tours off the beaten path .
Namibia truly has some of the best sites for a once-in-a-lifetime experience . A perfect example is the Hoba Meteorite located outside of the Etosha National Park. It’s the largest known meteorite on Earth that was too large to move, despite many efforts.
While at the coast, visit the “moon landscape oasis” Goanikontes. What used to be a settlement suitable for cattle breeders , is now a popular spot for locals to visit for the day. As you head back to town, take a moment to stop and enjoy the exquisite views of the landscape.
Exoticca takes extra care to tick all the boxes so you can enjoy every second of your Namibian tour without the hassle. Escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and enjoy an immersive trip that’ll leave you with stories to share for years to come.

Namibia vacation packages
A vast southern African country, characterized by its diverse landscapes of deserts, savannahs and rugged coastline, Namibia is the perfect destination for getting in touch with your wild side. Bordered by South Africa, Angola and Botswana and separated from neighbouring Zimbabwe by the huge Zambezi River, Namibia is often hailed as the perfect destination choice for first-time travellers to Africa as it encompasses a huge array of attractions that epitomize the dream of the African safari and the untouched, wild landscapes that this continent is known for.
With wildlife, wilderness and the unique culture of the indigenous communities such as the Himba and San peoples, a Namibia vacation package will open your eyes and heart to the heart of Africa.
The capital, Windhoek , in the center of the country, is the starting point for most explorations into the country’s natural wonders, whilst Swakopmund , on the Atlantic ocean coast, offers visitors on a tour of Namibia a fascinating insight into the country’s colonial past, with cheerful German -style buildings in a charming palette of colors.
On the other hand, Etosha National Park and Damaraland are some of the most abundant destinations for wildlife spotting in South Africa , filled with African animals, most notably rhinos and elephants. Open-top safaris, whale-watching in the Atlantic and climbing the red dunes of the Namib Desert ; Namibia travel brings these opportunities within your reach!
History of Namibia
To truly understand and make the most of a Namibia tour, you must first get to know its diverse and eventful history. Indigenous groups such as the Nama , San, and Damara have inhabited the territory of modern-day Namibia since ancient times. It was not until the 14th-century that the now dominant Bantu people’s arrived in the country, changing the cultural landscape forever.
After annexation by British colonialists during the ‘ scramble for Africa’ in the late 19th-century , parts of Namibia became integrated into the Union of South Africa in 1910 . Already, most of Namibia was under the rule of the German Empire , known as ‘German South-West Africa’ .
This period and its influence are clearly seen in the country’s language and in its colonial architecture, which you’ll notice if you visit Swakopmund during a tour of Namibia . Certain Namibian ethnic groups were targeted by the authorities during the years of German rule. The darks days of this genocide in the early 1900s greatly affected the Herero and Namaqua people and left its mark on the country as a whole. In 1915 , South African forces ended German rule in Namibia and in the aftermath of World War I the territory became fully integrated into South Africa , later suffering the same fate of apartheid from 1948 to the 90s. It was not until 1990 that Namibia gained full independence, after decades of uprisings and guerillas warfare, although Walvis Bay and Penguin Islands did not gain independence until 1994.
Nature in Namibia
Well-known for its sweeping sand dunes, Namibia is home to a vast array of natural wonders and is a must-visit haven for nature photographers. Rivers and wetlands contrast with the grassy plains of the Kalahari , whilst wildlife-rich coastal attractions, such as Walvis Bay , offer visitors the chance to meet seas lion colonies and pods of dolphins.
A Namibia tour package is sure to revolve around the wildlife and natural attractions of the country, and there is a handful of sights which characterize the experience. Fish River Canyon is the largest canyon in Africa and amazes visitors with its rugged landscape of unique and winding rock formations. It’s the perfect place to get out into the wild on a number of challenging hiking trails.
Perhaps the most famous natural sight in the country is Sossusvlei , an other-worldly expanse of towering red sand dunes, as big as mountains, fossilized trees, and atmospheric orange-hued landscapes. The famous fossilized trees have survived centuries without decaying due to the dry climate of the Namib Desert, the oldest in the world. If you have the chance to climb ‘ Big Daddy’ , one of the largest sand dunes, you’ll be rewarded with spectacular views and a brilliant sense of achievement!
Wildlife lovers and those who are adamant on sighting some of Africa’s biggest game will be drawn to Etosha National Park during a vacation package to Namibia. Herds of elephants are park’s most characteristic sight and it’s undoubtedly the best place for wildlife spotting in the country. Rhinos, leopards, and cheetahs can be found here in abundance, particularly around the wet season watering holes where they refresh themselves at dusk and dawn.
Culture in Namibia
Many intrepid travelers choose a tour of Namibia to immerse themselves in the country’s diverse and unique culture. Over the centuries, immigration has resulted in a population composed of numerous different ethnic groups, many with their own traditions and ways of life that invite curiosity and admiration from visitors.
Examples include the nomadic San bushmen and the Himba people, known for their use of otijze , a red paste applied to the women's skin and hair. Many groups continue to live very traditionally, in villages composed of straw huts and participate in rituals and folklore that have withstood the pressures of modernity. Cattle and farming are integral parts of rural life in Namibia.
More than half the population live rurally, and it’s here, in the vast countryside, where you can get to the heart of Namibian culture. Many Namibians follow Christianity , although up to 20% of the population continue to practice their own indigenous beliefs. The official languages are English and German, due to its colonial past, although Oshiwambo is the most widely spoken. Visitors on a vacation in Namibia will notice the strong German influence in the cities; you can even dine and drink in German restaurants and pubs, especially in the capital of Windhoek.
Watch the sunrise over Big Daddy Sand Dune in the Namib Desert, photograph fossilized trees in Sossusvlei , meet the noisy sea lions of Walvis Bay and embark on a wildlife safari in Etosha National Park on an action-packed tour of Namibia. Open up a world of adventure and experience a warm welcome in this beautiful country.

Best time to visit namibia.
The best time to visit Namibia depends on what you want to see and do. The dry season (May-September) is considered the best time to explore the Nabim Desert and go on safari as the temperatures are comfortable, vegetation is thin and wildlife congregates around waterholes.
The shoulder months (April and October) may be a better option for a safari without peak season crowds; however, Namibia's national parks and reserves never feel too crowded.
While it can be trickier to spot game in the wet season (November-March), you might be lucky to see cute newborns as it coincides with the birthing season .

Culture and customs
Human settlement in Namibia can be traced back to as early as 15000 BC. In the time since, a diverse mix of people and communities have inhabited Namibia, culminating in a unique cultural heritage made of symbolic beliefs, traits and traditions.
Today, most of the population sits within the larger Aawambo cultural group found mostly in the north of Namibia. Other large cultural groups that make up Namibia are the Nama, Damara, Kavango and Ovaherero people.
Namibia was colonised by Germany from the late 1800s until 1919. Because of this, Europeans now make up 5 per cent of the population. German influences can be seen throughout Namibia by way of cuisine, language, architecture and more. As much as 10 per cent of Namibia’s population is made up of people who have migrated from South Africa.
The national language is English; however, many Namibians also speak multiple Indigenous languages, such as the Aawambo language.
Eating and drinking
Like many countries, the majority of Namibia’s cuisine stems from the traditional cooking techniques and produce found in the area. In more recent times, immigrating cultures, specifically German and English, have added to the culinary scene. With a large variation of meats to cook with, it’s no surprise that many of the popular dishes feature meat in some way, often accompanied by a strong flavour and paired carbohydrate.
There are plenty of options for non-meat eaters, too. Some must-tries include green asparagus, omboga (dried spinach), Namibian olives, owawa mushrooms, geelrys (rice dish), oshigali (puree beans) and more.
Things to try in Namibia
A staple daily dish to many, mieliepap is a porridge-like meal usually made with cornflour and served with a selection of vegetables or even a meat protein like fish or goat.
A dish cooked in a small iron pot, potjiekos is a stew that typically combines game meat with hearty vegetables like cauliflower, pumpkin and cabbage.
This dish is of Dutch and Afrikaans origin and serves as a way to store meat. By using a savoury rub of flavoured spices, salt and vinegar, then left to air dry, biltong is a tasty snack that can last for a long time if cured correctly.
Namibian oysters are known to be meatier and fast-growing than in other areas of the world. They are likely to be prepared differently depending on where you go.
Fat cakes are a very popular snack in Namibia and other parts of the world. Essentially, fat cakes are just deep-fried dough balls that can be made into sweet or savoury dishes. So, it's no wonder they're popular!
Geography and environment
Red desert dunes, rugged bushveld, dense woodlands and plains of gravel make up Namibia's ancient terrain. Home to the monumental Fish River Canyon and sharing the iconic Kalahari Desert with South Africa and Botswana , Namibia has some of the most interesting landscapes in Africa , if not the world.
With little arable land and a warm climate, Namibia is prone to prolonged periods of drought, making farming difficult. Bordered by Angola, Botswana, South Africa and Zambia , Namibia also has a stretch of coastline along the Atlantic Ocean where visitors can see where the desert meets the sea.
Top 10 places to visit in Namibia

What’s travel without a meaningful souvenir or two? When in Namibia, Intrepid encourages travellers to support local makers who put time and effort into handmaking their wares. Culturally significant items are often available for purchase, especially in tourist areas. Speaking to the local sellers can be a great way to learn about their culture and understand the significance of what they are selling.
It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand generally have strict quarantine laws.
Things to buy in Namibia
Many of the beautiful textiles sold around Namibia can be used in a multitude of ways, e.g., for clothing, tableware, art and more. Look to buy from traditional artists and makers in craft markets to support local talent and local industries.
Wooden crafts
A hand-carved wooden object is a great memento to take home from Namibia. There’s likely a souvenir for everyone with crockery, bowls, animal figures, dolls, instruments and more. You’ll see traditional African masks for sale, which are often items that have a symbolic meaning to the local people.
Precious gems
As one of the largest producers of diamonds in the world, you’re likely to find a sparkly item or two in Namibia. Be sure to do some research or ask your guide about where to go, as not all shops will have the real deal.

A desert runs through it
Namibia certainly has a flair for the dramatic. From vast desert landscapes to the wild Skeleton Coast and the wildlife-rich Etosha National Park, no feature falls short of spectacular. So imposing it gave its name to the entire country, the Namib is the world's oldest desert, with a great sand sea stretching for hundreds of kilometres in every direction, the only desert in Africa inhabited by elephant, rhino, giraffe, and lion. Etosha National Park is dominated by an immense salt pan edged by waterholes, guaranteeing rewarding wildlife viewing. Still not enough? Try the awe-inspiring Fish River Canyon, dotted with hot springs and demanding enough to test even the toughest trekker. Home to the largest population of cheetah still in existence, but with fewer than two million people, Namibia is known for its stars, not its nightlife.

Take an epic road journey across four countries from Cape Town in South Africa to the iconic Natural Wonder of the World, Victoria Falls, in Zambia. Roam through sand dunes and desert landscapes in Namibia; experience the wetland wilderness of the Okavango Delta and the big game sanctuary of the Chobe Game Reserve in Botswana along the way. This journey is sure to impress you with lifelong memories unlike any other.
Customizable Itinerary
South africa west coast – the road north from cape town.
Meet your guide in the morning and climb aboard a vehicle to begin your adventure. Leaving Cape Town behind, you drive along Big Bay to Blaauwberg, where you stop for your first landscape photograph. From here, the beach sweeps away towards Table Mountain in the distance, and the classic vista of Devil’s Peak and Lion’s Head framing the huge, flat-topped massif is an ideal subject.
Climb back aboard and take the road north, up the West Coast towards Namibia. This landscape is starkly beautiful, and at certain times of the year, this rugged terrain is carpeted in a luxuriant display of colorful flowers. In the afternoon you arrive at a hot springs resort, where you will camp for the evening.
What's Included:
Orange River – Into Namibia
After a quick swim in the deliciously warm water, you head north and cross the border into Namibia. Arriving at your campsite on the bank of the Orange River, you notice the grand scale of the landscape here- the valley is deeply carved and dramatic, and this is a taste of what to expect in Namibia.
Fish River Canyon – Paddle on the Orange River
You enjoy a morning canoeing on the river with a guide. Paddling on this huge body of water through a dramatically etched rocky valley, you gain a sense of the vast passage of geological time that must have passed to create such amazing rock formations.
Setting off again, you drive to the Fish River Canyon, where a landscape of incredible grandeur awaits you. Comparable to the Grand Canyon, this huge gash in the earth offers incredible photographic opportunities. In the light of the late afternoon, the rocks take on a reddish glow, and the canyon floor, far below you, begins to be swallowed by deep shadow. You enjoy a sundowner drink on the canyon rim before heading back to your campsite.
Sesriem Canyon – Into the Namib Desert
Depart the Fish River Canyon after breakfast, and set off for Sossusvlei in the Namib Desert. The landscapes are truly epic along the way, where huge outcrops of rock loom over vast gravel plains and jagged mountains rear into the sky. Feeling dwarfed by the sheer size of this place, you arrive at your campsite near the Sesriem Canyon.
Sossusvlei – Into the Dunes
An early start sees you heading into the dunes of Sossusvlei. These mountains of sand are among the largest in the world, and their sinuous shapes and shadows make for compelling photographs. If you are feeling energetic, climb the dune known as Big Daddy- the view from the top is well worth the effort of getting there, and then you can tumble all the way down!
Swakopmund – To the Seaside
After breakfast, hit the road again for Swakopmund. This quaint Germanic town sits between the desert and the ocean, and is often enigmatically wreathed in a sea mist. The seaside promenade is a wonderful place for a sunset stroll, and a variety of cafes and restaurants serve up fantastically fresh seafood.
Swakopmund – Adventures
The town has a host of adventure activities on offer, and you can choose between skydiving over the desert to zooming around in the dunes on a quad bike. Alternatively, wander the streets, museums and promenades of this fascinating town, steeped in German history and crowded on all sides by creeping desert.
Brandberg Mountain – Cape Cross to Brandberg
In the morning, you visit the Cape Cross seal colony, where thousands upon thousands of Cape fur seals cover the beach and frolic in the surf. Keep an eye out for jackals, brown hyenas and vultures, as they often lurk nearby to feed on dead seals.
Next, the road turns inland and takes you to the Brandberg, Namibia’s highest mountain, that is visible from a great distance away as it rises out of the surrounding gravel plains. Several Namibian tribes revere the mountain, and its name translates as the ‘Burning Mountain’ in reference to its color at sunset. You take a hike into the foothills to see the extraordinary rock art panel named the “White Lady”, which is the work of San Bushmen some 2,000 years ago.
Waterberg Plateau – Visit the Cheetah Outreach Program
Depart the Brandberg after breakfast, and head for a cheetah conservation project. Here you have the opportunity to learn more about these amazing cats and the conservation problems that face them as they come into conflict with livestock farmers. You also get the chance to interact with them, and you marvel at their long legs, graceful bodies, deep chests and thick tails- all designed to make them the world’s fastest land mammal.
Etosha National Park – Into Etosha
Continuing northwards, the road leads you to Etosha National Park. ‘Etosha’ in the local language means ‘place of dry water’ and is in fact an enormous salt depression over thousands of square kilometers.
Day 11 - 12
Etosha National Park – Experience Etosha
Set off into the park in the morning and late afternoon game drives, where this vast and flat landscape contains a surprising amount of wildlife. The sight of elephants, grayish white from the region’s dust, marching across a space that makes even them seem tiny is awe-inspiring. Waterholes attract a plethora of animals and you can spot oryx, springbok, giraffe, zebra and kudu as they arrive to slake their thirst, and if you look carefully, you might spot the tawny shape of a lion lying in wait under a thorn bush.
In the heat of the day, the swimming pool at your campsite provides a welcoming retreat as you wait out the midday hours between game drives. In the evenings, the nearby waterhole is lit up by floodlights- it is fascinating to sit and watch which animals emerge from the dark for a drink.
Caprivi Strip – The Caprivi Strip
Head east from Etosha into the Caprivi Strip, where the landscape, with vegetation watered by the Kavango River, becomes denser and lusher. You camp on the riverbank, aware that downstream lies the fabled Okavango Delta, your next destination.
Day 14 - 16
Okavango Delta – An Okavango Adventure
Cross into Botswana and head for the Panhandle region of the Okavango. Leaving your vehicle behind, the final part of the journey requires 4 x 4 trucks and motorboats as the terrain becomes sandier and marshier. Arriving at the water’s edge, you climb into a mokoro , a traditional dugout canoe that local tribes have used to navigate these waterways for centuries. With a poler standing at the back, he pushes you out over the water for an unforgettable adventure. The Delta is a huge maze of channels, waterways and lagoons that are dotted with tree islands and flooded plains. An oasis in the arid Kalahari Desert, it supports an astonishing variety of life. Hippos snort in the deeper channels, crocodiles slide from sandbanks, fish eagles scream in the sky and kingfishers dart like glittering jewels through the papyrus. Red lechwe antelope and Cape buffalo are seen in the floodplains near the channels, and herds of elephants crash through the tree islands. At night while camping on an island, you might hear the roars of several lion prides warning each other off, interspersed with the manic giggling of hyenas.
Maun – Safari Break
Leave the Okavango behind and travel south to the small town of Maun. It still retains a frontier-town atmosphere, despite growing considerably in recent years as the African safari industry has mushroomed in the Delta. You can relax in the pool garden at your campsite, or take a scenic flight in a light aircraft over the Delta for an entirely new perspective of this amazing ecosystem.
Chobe – Into Chobe National Park
Depart Maun and head into the vastness of the Chobe region. Huge swathes of mopane trees that seem to go on forever dominate the landscape. Keeping an eye out for wildlife along the way, you arrive at your campsite on the bank of the Chobe River in the late afternoon. You can hear hippos chortling in the water, and fish eagles perch in the trees overhead.
Chobe – A Chobe Adventure
Set off into Chobe National Park for a game drive in the coolness of the early morning. This huge park boasts what is considered the largest concentration of elephants in the world, and is also a haven for big cats, buffalo and the critically endangered African wild dog. These predators are highly social, and hunt with astonishing speed and precision, often over huge distances that their rangy legs effortlessly carry them.
In the afternoon, climb aboard a motorboat and cruise out onto the Chobe River. Here you will have an opportunity to photograph a multitude of birds at close range, see hippos at eye-level, and if you are lucky, be treated to the sight of a herd of elephants making their way across the river. These huge animals are good swimmers, and when the water gets too deep to stand, they use their trunks like snorkels!
Livingstone – Into Zambia
Follow the Chobe River north until it meets the Zambezi, and there make the crossing by ferry into Zambia. A short while later you will arrive in Livingstone, a bustling town where a host of adrenaline activities are on offer, focusing on the river and the Victoria Falls, a short distance downstream.
Livingstone – Visit Victoria Falls
In the morning you set off along the pathways overlooking Victoria Falls. This ranks as one of the most impressive sights in the world: a mile-wide curtain of water plunging over a fissure in the earth's crust and boiling into the gorge below. Such is the tremendous power of these falls that the spray rises in a column that can be seen for miles around. The thunder of all that water emits a deep rumble that you can feel in your bones. It is no wonder the local tribes call it ‘Mosi a Tunya’- ‘The Smoke that Thunders.'
If you aren't ready for your trip to end, or want to customize it further, see the reviews of Botswana safaris for ideas.

10 Best African Countries for Safari
Posted: December 19, 2023 | Last updated: December 19, 2023
#1 Botswana
Recommended Tours:
Thus, poachers are seen as enemies of the people. As a result, Botswana has come into view as Africa's most sought-after ecotourism destination. Starting from the Chobe National Park to the Moremi Nature Reserve, you'll be able to witness numerous gems all around the country.
Back in 2014, Botswana widely banned the hunting of wild animals and implemented strict laws which are still in practice. The country resumes its zero-tolerance for poaching and their very own environmental minister, Tshekedi Khama, has even launched a shoot-to-kill policy for poachers.
Botswana, with its wildlife conservation and natural parks, is a haven for nature lovers. It is currently in the top 5, as its approach to the protection and conservation of wildlife is worth the praise. As a country, it is very forward-thinking, some may even call it aggressively forward-thinking when it comes to its preservation and anti-poaching laws.
Its fertile land provides a safe and comforting home to around 200 mammal species. This includes elephants, hippos, monkeys and so much more. Along with 650 bird species and 5,500 plants. Even though the country is still underdeveloped and most of the population live in rural households, its national parks, and sight-seeing destinations are on the top 10 of our lists.
Even though many would face some difficulties in locating Malawi on a map, given how tiny it is, the country is home to the world-renowned Lake Malawi National Park. This is practically one-third of the country and is the most biodiverse lake in the world.
Most of the land in Namibia is occupied by the Kalahari and Namib Deserts. Along with that, the country also has 12 national parks and many other areas which are protected. So, if you go there for a safari, you'll have many rich areas to see and explore.
When it comes to countries with the least amount of population, Namibia is one of them. Which proves to be a good thing for nature. This is because most of the land in Namibia is still unspoiled by human filth or any sort of development, giving nature a chance to breathe.
In the country's Volcanoes National Park, you'll find 10 habituated gorilla families. Groups of 8 trekkers can visit them for one hour per day. But that's enough to get the best African safari experience. And as a nature lover, you'll enjoy the experience to the max.
If you've been around for some time, you'll be familiar with Rwanda's mountain gorillas. They were famously broadcasted and their fight for survival was shown on National Geographic . This was all thanks to the late Dian Fossey back in the 1970s who advocated for the rights of these mountain gorillas throughout her life.
Considering the tragic history surrounding the mass genocide of the people of Rwanda back in 1994, it's truly a blessing what the country has achieved in the past 25 years. There have been countless investments in infrastructure. This has resulted in the country being a very fast-growing destination for ecotourism.
#6 South Africa
But given all the advantages, it's safe to conclude that South Africa also suffers from over-tourism. I mean, if you have so many great attractions, people will flock towards it. Chances are that you'll find yourself in the middle of dozens of unruly visitors who are not too keen on obeying the rules. This occurs mostly during the peak seasons.
Annually, the country has one million visitors. Its biggest attraction is the Kruger National Park with its enrichment in biodiversity. Visitors there also have the liberty to self-drive, thus, getting a first-person private but superb experience.
For some time now, South Africa has been climbing the charts to become one of the most popular destinations for African safaris. Given its location, South Africa is a very convenient and cheap destination for people from the United States. Besides that, the country also boasts a well-developed infrastructure which makes it perfect for luxury travelers as well.
#7 Tanzania
One of the most popular locations would be the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The country is also a haven for 1100 different bird species. It's no wonder that Tanzania gets this much rep. Especially when the country boasts so many wonders.
We talked about Kenya being the top destination for Safari. Now Tanzania here takes second place in being the continent's most popular safari destination. And why shouldn't it? The country has 16 national parks and an extraordinary amount of wealth and wildlife wonders for the people to witness.
Some of its natural attractions include housing the highest mountain range in Africa. It also has the world's largest free-standing volcano and the second-largest freshwater lake. With its 30 national parks and other wildlife reserves, Uganda boasts many more sanctuaries which are worth the visit. Especially if you're a lover of nature and wildlife.
Often called "The Pearl of Africa", Uganda is certainly a great pick for an African safari. Its reputation as being one of the best ecotourism destinations comes from the country's natural attractions and wildlife.
Out of its 20 national parks, the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park is home to many wildlife animals such as African elephants, Angolan giraffes, Cape buffalo, etc. Other than that, there are many private ownerships of National parks, notably the Kasanka National Park which is near the basin of Lake Bangweulu. It's a safe place where visitors can see 400 different avian species.
Zambia may be a bit far down the list of popular destinations for your African safari, but many consider it to be a destination for diversified and immersive safari experiences, and making a notable feature on our 10 Best African Countries for Safari guide. The country is steadily focusing on conservation as their president has shown a keen interest and is working on building the nation's economy as well as the infrastructure.
