Rockefeller Center

Top choice in Midtown

This 22-acre 'city within a city' debuted at the height of the Great Depression, with developer John D Rockefeller Jr footing the $100-million price tag. Taking nine years to build, it was America's first multiuse retail, entertainment and office space – a sprawl of 19 buildings (14 of which are the original moderne structures). The center was declared a National Landmark in 1987. Highlights include the Top of the Rock observation deck and NBC Studio Tours .

The Rockefeller Center is also graced with the creations of 30 great artists, commissioned around the punchy theme ‘Man at the Crossroads Looks Uncertainly but Hopefully at the Future.’ Paul Manship contributed the 18ft Prometheus, overlooking the sunken plaza, while Lee Lawrie made the 24ft-tall bronze Atlas, in front of the International Building (630 Fifth Ave). Isamu Noguchi's News sits above the entrance to the Associated Press Building (50 Rockefeller Plaza), while José Maria Sert's oil American Progress awaits in the lobby of central 30 Rockefeller Plaza (formerly known as the GE Building). The latter work replaced Mexican artist Diego Rivera's original painting, rejected by the Rockefellers for containing ‘communist imagery.’

Come the festive season, Rockefeller Plaza is where you'll find New York's most famous Christmas tree . Ceremoniously lit just after Thanksgiving, it's a tradition that dates back to the 1930s, when construction workers set up a small tree on the site. In its shadow, Rink at Rockefeller Center is the city's best-known – and smallest – ice-skating rink (which becomes a cafe in summer).

Chuck Scarborough Celebrated 50 Years at NBC in the Most Grand NYC Way

The renowned NBC news anchor recently celebrated a major milestone.

rockefeller plaza tour

Monday, March 25, 2024, marked a very special day in NBC history, and the network celebrated the occasion in the best way. Read all about it, below.

Chuck Scarborough celebrates 50 years with NBC

On March 25, the Empire State Building lit up in blue and gold to honor the 50th anniversary of WNBC journalist Chuck Scarborough. A beloved voice in the New York broadcast landscape, his first day officially joining the team on WNBC as a news anchor was March 1974. He originally delivered the news from the prolific 30 Rockefeller Plaza in the same studio where  The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon  currently airs.

"This is such an extraordinary honor," Scarborough told NBC New York on March 25 during the light up event.

"I can't thank the Empire State Building, Dan [Rogoski] and everybody enough, for this singular honor," he added. "This has just been wonderful, and what a great way to kick off my celebration of 50 years cause it was a Monday on March 25th, exactly 50 years ago, that I walked through the doors of NBC and began this career that has brought me to this point."

Meanwhile, Scarborough's colleagues are more than proud of what he's accomplished in his five decade run.

“Chuck Scarborough is a giant in American journalism and the face of television news for generations of viewers, including me. He is also the longest serving television anchor in the largest, most prestigious television market in America – making his 50-year anniversary even more remarkable," said Eric Lerner, president and general manager of NBC 4 New York, according to AdWeek . “This is a milestone that may never be broken and a wonderful testament to Chuck’s life-long passion for storytelling, his commitment to journalistic excellence and the deep admiration he holds among all of us.”

“In a city defined by change, Chuck has been a constant force for truth and exceptional journalism,” said Amy Morris, senior vice president of News for NBC 4 New York and Telemundo 47. “A half century after he walked into 30 Rock, he continues to lead by example, collaborating with the team and challenging everyone to make every newscast even better.”

Congratulations, Chuck!

To further celebrate his impact, WNBC will air a tribute to Scarborough on March 28 titled “Chuck Scarborough’s 50th Anniversary”. The 30-minute special will include career highlights and interviews surrounding his expansive time on the network.
