Where is Andorra?

How to get to Andorra

Transportation options.

Andorra does not have its own airport, but you can reach the principality by flying into nearby international airports. The most convenient airports are:

• Barcelona El Prat Airport (Spain):  Located about 200 km from Andorra, it offers a wide range of international flights and is well-connected to major cities worldwide.
• Toulouse Blagnac Airport (France) : Situated approximately 195 km from Andorra, this airport also provides international flight options.

Although Andorra itself does not have train services, you can take a train to the nearby cities and then continue your journey by other means of transportation.

An economical and practical way to reach Andorra is by taking a bus from major cities in Spain and France. Regular bus services connect Andorra to Barcelona, Toulouse, and other nearby cities.

f you prefer a self-drive option, renting a car is a great way to explore Andorra’s scenic landscapes. The road network is well-maintained, but remember to check the weather and road conditions during winter months, as snow and ice can affect driving.

The Best Ski Resorts in Andorra

Forget crowded, expensive ski resorts in the Alps. This tiny mountainous country on the border with Spain offers intermediate-friendly slopes, cheap beer and endless sunshine. Although it’s only about the size of London, Andorra still manages to squeeze in nine high-quality ski resorts, each with its own distinct personality. Read on for our favourites.

In the northwest of the country, Arinsal is the perfect place to strap on a pair of skis for the first time. Its network of mainly blue pistes are perfectly suited to first- and second-timers, while there’s a nursery for the little ones and a snow park with a halfpipe for thrill seekers to perfect their tricks. Off the slopes, Arinsal village has a decent selection of family-friendly restaurants and après ski bars, as well as activities – such as bowling, spa treatments (at the Hotel Princesa Parc) and ziplining – for the non-skiers.

Pal, on the other side of the mountain and linked to Arinsal by a cable car, offers more advanced skiers something crunchier to get their edges into. As well as gentle, sweeping blues, there are steep reds and even off-piste black runs through the trees. The village of Pal itself is matchbox-size, with just a handful of hotels and restaurants – so if you’re looking to blow off steam after a day on the slopes, carve your way down to Arinsal. Pal is less than 10 minutes away by taxi.

3. Pas de la Casa

High and expansive, Pas de la Casa is ideal for late season skiers looking for wide, quiet slopes. As the highest resort in the Pyrenees, it can stay open and snow-blanketed right up until the end of April, meaning the keen beans looking to avoid the crowded pistes and lift queues of peak season will be happy as larry. Beginners will be pleased, too, as the majority of the slopes here are green and blue – with a scattering of red and black runs found right at the top. Freestyle skiers and snowboarders will appreciate the park and pipe, just above town.

For slope-savvy families, this pocket-size resort is perfect. There’s an excellent ski school to drop the kids off at, if they’re not up to speed with you – or if you need to catch up to them – plus a beginner/intermediate mix of pistes, ideal for those ready to transition to grown-up runs. There are tree-lined black runs, too, for the show-offs in your group. As for the village of Soldeu itself, it’s not huge – you can walk from one end to the other in 10 minutes, but it has a handful of reliable family-friendly restaurants and hotels, most with spas and kids’ clubs.

6. El Tarter

El Tarter itself may be small – a cluster of contemporary wood-and-stone apartment buildings winding up into the slopes – but this bijou resort is part of the Grandvalira, the largest ski area in Andorra, with 210km (130mi) of pistes to explore. Beginners and intermediates are particularly well-served, with the majority of the area’s runs being green, blue and red. There’s loads to do for non-skiers, too, with activities such as dog-sledding and snowshoeing on offer.

7. La Massana

One of the four localised resorts that form the Vallnord ski area, La Massana is largely comparable to its neighbours Pal and Arinsal when it comes to the difficulty and style of its pistes. It differs in having a bigger central hub, with a greater choice of hotels, restaurants and après ski bars. And it’s completely unique in Andorra for having a comic book museum, as well as a cultural theatre that specialises in off-beat plays.

Canillo, linked to Soldeu as part of the Grandvalira ski area, is for adrenaline junkies. It’s only got a handful of pistes itself, which aren’t particularly gnarly, but it’s the off-slope activities that’ll really get your blood pumping. Get ready for ice karting, which involves racing petrol-powered go-karts in laps around an ice rink. Or how about zooming along the longest zipline in Europe at the Mont Magic Circuit? There’s even a motorbike museum for die-hard petrol heads.

Why andorra.

Andorra has long since shed its reputation for only being a ski resort that suitable for beginners or those on a budget. Huge investments have been made on the lift system and many hotels have gone more up market meaning that it now catered for a now very different type of skier than its past history would suggest.

Andorra’s share of the British market has suffered in recent years, it used to have a market share of around 14% but this is now around the 7% mark which is a shame as its largest ski area can certainly rival many top ski areas in Europe. We think that Andorra is definitely worth another look, don’t be fooled by its previous cheap and cheerful reputation, Andorra has come up in the world and so has its ski areas, don’t be a ski snob – give it a whirl!

Popular Andorran Ski Resorts

Grandvalira is by far and away the largest and most popular ski area in Andorra is the Grandvalira Super-ski area which consists Soldeu , El Tarter and Pas de la Casa giving a massive 210km of skiing. The area is an intermediates paradise with 62 blue runs, 31 reds and 25 black. The two linked resorts stand at 1800m and 2100m respectively – so boast the same height of their French counterparts. The skiing goes up to 2640m and is well-linked with dedicated children’s ski areas, 3 freestyle and boardercross parks. The resort’s host World cups and their ski school shave won numerous awards.

The highest, most snow-sure and most popular resort is Pas de la Casa which is certainly the liveliest resort in Andorra. The lift pass covers the entire area and gives quick fast access to the linked area and resorts of Soldeu, El Tarter and Grau Roig.

Arinsal is linked to Pal and is the smaller ski area in Andorra with 63km of pistes, there’s a freestyle park, excellent ski schools and good snow reliability with most runs above 1950m and is best suited for beginners and intermediate skiers.

Andorra is sandwiched in between France and Italy and is famous for having more kilometres of pistes than it does tarmac roads, so its pedigree as a skier’s destination is assured.

Andorra is no longer the cheaper alternative to skiing in the Alps that it once was. The investment in fast lifts and snow making has bought Andorra into the 21st century for skiing.

It’s a popular choice for families, especially in the main resort of Soldeu. Most of the ski resorts offer creches. Mainly caring for children with the age ranges of 4 to 8.

Everything You Need to Know About Skiing in Andorra

I recently wrote about my time in the capital city of Andorra la Vella while on vacation in the tiny European micro-nation of Andorra. As I mentioned in that post , the first question I was asked by most when I told them I was going there was “Where is Andorra?!” I realize it’s a tiny speck on a map, but it was really quite surprising that so few people had heard of it!

I’m always planning my next travel destination and fastidiously studying maps of the world. So, Andorra had already made it onto my list of places to eventually tick off my bucket list. This would most likely have been on a day trip from Spain or France just to say I’ve been there. But after visiting this beautiful dot on the map, I can tell you that one day in Andorra is NOT ENOUGH .

Skiing in Andorra

Luckily, I happened to hear about a ski trip being planned to Andorra by a local Boston ski club. Skiing in Andorra?! While I had heard of the country before, I hadn’t realized that it was nestled smack dab in the middle of the Pyrenees mountain range. I certainly had never thought about taking a ski trip there! So I was sold. Sign me up. I’m in.

As it turns out, skiing is the number one source of tourism in Andorra. Alpine skiing was actually declared to be a “national interest” by the Andorran government in 1965, and nearly 30 Andorran skiers have competed in 10 Olympic games. While it is a fairly popular ski destination for Europeans, Andorra is less well known for non-Europeans like me.

Andorra used to mainly attract skiers looking for a cheap and lively ski holiday. But over the past few decades there has been a strong focus on improving the infrastructure and amenities. Now the elevated offerings of the ski resorts and their mountain villages attract a more luxe clientele, as well as more families. Even with these improvements, the value of what you get for your money in Andorra is still unmatched. You can have a luxurious vacation at a much cheaper price tag than you could in other European cities and ski towns.

There are 2 main ski areas in Andorra: Grandvalira and Vallnord. Grandvalira is the largest ski area in the Pyrenees and was the location of choice for the Boston ski club trip to Andorra. Vallnord is smaller but is great for families and beginners. I didn’t have a chance to ski this resort but I have heard that the Ordino-Arcalis section of Vallnord has the best off-piste skiing in Andorra.

Grandvalira

Grandvalira is actually comprised of 6 smaller villages: Encamp, Canillo, El Tarter, Soldeu, Grau Roig, and Pas de la Casa. Grandvalira itself was established in 2003 when the smaller ski resorts of Soldeu/El Tarter (founded in 1964) and Pas de la Casa/Grau Roig (founded in 1965) merged to form one massive resort. It is now one of the largest ski resorts in the world!

The resorts are interlinked so it is possible to ski between all 6 villages in one day. If you find yourself at the far end of the resort at the end of the day, there is a ski bus that will drop you back off in your village. Or you can take the bus if you decide to imbibe in some après ski beverages rather than returning straight home. With the cheap drinks and lively après atmosphere, this was a frequent occurrence during my trip!

Pro Tip: Take advantage of the cost-effective “Lift Pass & Lunch” offer at Grandvalira, which can only be booked online in advance of your visit.

Mountain Stats and Observations

Grandvalira boasts 210 km of skiable terrain at an altitude up to 2,640 meters. The average snowfall is 216” per year, and more than half of the terrain is serviced by 1,000 snowmaking machines. There are a total of 62 lifts, including 3 gondolas and 20 high-speed lifts. They can carry 100,000 skiers per hour!

Grandvalira is suited for all levels of skiing. Of the 128 trails, 16% are designated beginner (green), 38% intermediate (blue), 30% advanced (red), and 17% expert (black). One of my observations is that there certainly were A LOT of beginners on the mountain. There is not one specific beginner area so I definitely had to swerve to avoid beginners all across the mountain.

There is also no concept of queuing up at the lift line. I don’t think this can be attributed to there being a lot of beginners. Instead, I think it was a consequence of the casual attitude in general at this European resort. It was mayhem trying to funnel hundreds of people onto the lift in an orderly fashion. And since people were not lined up appropriately, they often let a half-full lift go by while they waited for their companions to catch up in line. It was clearly not a model of efficiency. On the flip side, the expert terrain was WAY less crowded with smaller lift lines. So I tended to stick to those parts of the mountain.

The casual vibe of the mountain also had its benefits though. There are countless dining options on the mountain. Many of them involve either silver service or lounge chairs and ALL of them involve champagne. My impression was that a lot of patrons were at Grandvalira for the atmosphere rather than the skiing, and I tried to embrace that mindset. So, while I might not have had the most intense week of skiing, I filled my days with long, lazy lunches in the warm sunshine, glass of champagne in hand. And I couldn’t have been happier.

FIS Alpine Skiing World Cup

I also happened to be in Andorra at a great time in the country’s ski history. Grandvalira hosted the 2019 FIS Alpine Skiing World Cup Finals for the first time ever two weeks following my visit. Pretty good for a country/mountain most people outside of Europe have never heard of, eh? So there was an all-around buzz of excitement and pride on the mountain. And Veuve-Clicquot was a sponsor which could explain the ubiquity of champagne!

For me, it was exciting to ski the Avet trail, one of the two championship runs that were being prepped for the professionals. The other championship run, Àliga, was unfortunately closed to the public. Most exciting of all was the opportunity to ride the chairlift with Tessa Worley , a member of the French Olympic team. She and Coralie Frasse-Sombet were at Grandvalira for training runs in preparation for the upcoming World Cup Finals. The laid back atmosphere of the mountain meant that the Olympians had to wait in line at the lift just like me!

Village Overview

Encamp is the closest village to the capital city of Andorra la Vella (about a 10-minute drive). It is one of the larger villages and has more of a “town” feel than the other villages. The issue with Encamp, however, is that the village is not directly at the base of skiable terrain. You need to take a 15-minute ride on the Funicamp cable car to reach the slopes. You’ll get a nice view along the way though and end up in the middle of the mountain near the Solanelles lodge.

Where to Eat/Drink

El Racó de Solanelles has THE BEST panoramic view from its terrace. I highly recommend stopping here for a break from skiing to enjoy the view with a glass of champagne in hand (obvi). It is also possible for non-skiers to reach this restaurant quite easily upon exiting the funicular.

Where to Après

L’Après Amélie is an aptly named bar at the base of the mountain. It is located in the same building as the funicular, on an outdoor terrace behind the cafe. I was there on a Sunday so it was pretty quiet but I’ve heard it has a vibrant scene on Fridays and Saturdays. There was a phenomenal sunset and a “buy-one-get-one-free” happy hour drink special while I was there. Two drinks and an amazing sunset for 8 euros was worth the trek down to Encamp village!

Canillo is the next village you pass along the mountain road. This is where I stayed while in Andorra. It is one of the quieter villages so if you are looking for rowdy nightlife, this isn’t the place. It has a handful of restaurants and shops and a nice walking path along the river.

There is also a scenic viewpoint called Mirador del Roc del Quer de Canillo on a mountain overlooking the village. I hired a taxi to navigate the switchback roads up the mountain to the viewpoint. Unfortunately it was closed due to weather but the ride up the viewpoint was still worth it!

Like in Encamp, you need to take a gondola from the base of Canillo to reach skiable terrain but the ride is much shorter. There are only a handful of runs in the Canillo area. It is definitely an area that is great for families and beginners. If you want to tackle more difficult runs and explore the rest of the mountain then you need to take several lifts in a row. I found it difficult to make my way back across the resort to the Canillo gondola before it closed. In fact, I only did this on the last day I was there since I wanted to finish off the trip with a zipline adventure.

The zipline is located at the top of the gondola and is the longest zipline in southern Europe. You reach speeds up to 80 km/h at a height of 40m above the ground. I didn’t find it to be that fast or scary, probably because I am not afraid of heights. But it was still fun! There is also a toboggan run at the top of the gondola but I sadly ran out of time to test it out.

There are more non-ski activities at the base of the gondola in the village of Canillo. The Palau de Gel (Ice Palace) houses an Olympic-size swimming pool and ice rink, among other sporting activities such as squash. I partook in the ice-karting race (driving go-karts on the ice rink) while I was there. It was hilarious and entertaining to see all the karts sliding across the ice. It is definitely harder than it looks. I don’t think I’ll become a professional ice-kart racer any day soon!

The only options in Canillo to eat on the mountain are La Cuina del Forn (self-service) or Roc de Les Bruixes (mountain cuisine). In town, Restaurant El Solà has great grilled meats and paella, and Restaurant Moli del Peano serves traditional fondue. If you go to the Mirador del Roc del Quer , plan to stop for lunch at Borda Pi , a rustic farmhouse restaurant near the viewpoint that shares the same spectacular views.

My other recommendation for a great dinner near Canillo is Restaurant Borda l’Era del Rossell . It is located in the hamlet of Meritxell, which is a 5-minute taxi ride from Canillo. A “borda” is a rustic restaurant that serves authentic Andorran mountain cuisine and is a must-do. I went here on my last night and had an outrageously delicious meal. It consisted of foie gras, beef carpaccio, beef filet served with potatoes and vegetables, and a molten chocolate cake for dessert. Needless to say, I definitely indulged.

I also finally got to try the Andorran wine. Though Andorra is nestled between Spain and France (two countries known for their quality wine production), the first Andorran wine wasn’t produced until 2009. I tried one of the first red wines produced in Andorra from the Casa Auvinyà vineyards. The small-batch vineyards in Andorra typically do not export their wine outside of the country so I couldn’t miss my chance to try it. My server pointed out a handwritten number on the back label. I had bottle 352 out of only 1,000 produced!

As mentioned, Canillo is a pretty quiet village. If you are looking for an après spot, try Blot Viking Bar which serves craft beer and pub food. It is very unassuming from the outside but chicly decorated on the inside. This is the closest you’ll get to finding nightlife in Canillo!

Where to Stay

I stayed at the 5-star Hotel Ski Plaza & Wellness , which was about a 5-minute walk to the gondola. The rooms were on the smaller side but there were a few cozy common spaces with fireplaces to relax in, as well as a children’s playroom. There is also a lobby bar that had a pretty lively scene most nights! The hotel has a relaxing spa with a whirlpool, sauna, and steam room. But access costs an additional charge. However, guests of the hotel also get free access to the Palau de Gel (Ice Palace) leisure center right across the street.

Soldeu/El Tarter

The villages of Soldeu and El Tarter are next along the mountain road and are often lumped together. These sections of the mountain have terrain for all levels of skiers but the expert-level runs are the big draw. The two championship runs for the 2019 FIS Alpine Skiing World Cup Finals are located in Soldeu/El Tarter. I took advantage of the opportunity to take a few laps down Avet, in Soldeu, the championship run that was open to the public. It was definitely one of my favorite trails on the mountain! The other championship run, Àliga, in El Tarter, was closed while I was there. It is one of the 2 trails that make up the iconic “X”  that inspired the Grandvalira logo.

The highlight of the dining options in Soldeu is hands down the Veuve Clicquot Snow Club . It is located on the sun terrace outside the Brasserie Gall de Bosc steak house so you can enjoy a delicious hamburger with your bottle of ice-cold champagne. I seriously could have sat here in the sun with a glass of champagne for the entire day.

For a similar experience in El Tarter, you can check out the Terrassa IQOS or Snow Club El Tarter . These establishments both have sun terraces and either a DJ or live music daily. For non-skiers, it is possible to reach the Snow Club El Tarter from the top of the gondola.

The best après ski spot in Grandvalira, in my opinion, is L’Abarset , located at the base of the mountain in El Tarter. It has an expansive outdoor terrace with heat lamps to keep revelers warm into the night. The terrace starts to get crowded around 4 pm when the DJ or other entertainment gets the party started. Pro tip: you need to purchase a prepaid card at the entrance of the terrace before ordering drinks at the bar. Money and credit cards aren’t accepted at the bar itself after 4 pm.

The villages of Soldeu and El Tarter are known for their higher-end accommodations with slope-side access. So if you’re looking for luxury and convenience with excellent value for your money, this is the place. I am definitely staying in one of these two villages on my next trip to Andorra (yes, I’m already planning my trip back). Here are a few hotel recommendations in Soldeu/El Tarter:

• Sport Hotel Hermitage & Spa (5-star hotel in Soldeu)
• Sport Hotel Village (4-star hotel in Soldeu)
• Hotel Nòrdic (4-star hotel El Tarter)
• Euroski Mountain Resort (4-star hotel in El Tarter)

The Grau Roig (or “Grau”) sector of Grandvalira is at the heart of the mountain, between Soldeu and Pas de La Casa. There are fabulous trails and great views to be had in this part of the mountain. However, the “village” is not really a village at all. Grau Roig is the only non-residential sector on the mountain, consisting of just one slope-side hotel.

Though there isn’t really a commercialized village in Grau Roig, this sector of Grandvalira is a mecca for fantastic on-mountain dining. Restaurant Tres Estanys (Mediterranean), Restaurant Braseria Piolet (mountain cuisine), and Vodkabar (gourmet tapas) are three great options in this sector with a nice atmosphere for both indoor and outdoor dining.

My top recommendation for lunch is Refugi Llac del Pessons , which has been offering gourmet mountain cuisine for 25 years. Pro tip: make a lunch reservation ahead of time to avoid a long wait!

For a lighter lunch or just for a bubbly break, you must try Amélie Experience , which is a collaboration between Grandvalira and the Amélie oyster brand. It is located on the sun terrace next to Refugi Llac del Pessons, and both establishments overlook the frozen Lake Pessons. Grab a lounge chair if you can, and order a few refreshing oysters and a glass of Louis Roederer Champagne. It’s the perfect place to relax in the sunshine and blue skies, with one of the best views on the mountain!

Another must-see locale on the mountain is the Hotel Iglú in Grau Roig, which is made 100% from snow. You can either stop for lunch at the Iglú Terrace or grab a glass of bubbly from the Iglú Bar and relax on a lounge chair in the sunshine (see the theme here?).

Where to Après & Stay

There is really only one après and lodging option in Grau Roig and that is Grau Roig Andorra Boutique Hotel & Spa , a slope-side luxury hotel and spa.

Pas de la Casa

Pas de la Casa (or “Pas”) village is the farthest from Andorra’s capital and is actually directly on the border with France. It is the largest of the villages, with many lodging, restaurant, and bar options. Pas also capitalizes on Andorra’s low tax status with an abundance of duty-free shops. It is certainly lacking the charm of some of the smaller villages, but if you are looking for a lively and affordable option, then Pas is for you. It’s known for its party atmosphere with après often extending into the early hours of dawn.

The village is perfectly situated at the bottom of the Pas de la Casa sector of Grandvalira; the trails funnel down into the village in the valley. The terrain is suitable for all levels of skiers, and you can easily access the Grau Roig sector from the Pas lifts as well. Plus, the view at the top of the Pas sector is unmatched, spanning across Grandvalira and into France.

There is no shortage of restaurant options in the actual village of Pas de la Casa. On the mountain, you can’t miss the panoramic views of both the French and Spanish Pyrenees at the UFO-like Coll Blanc KSB Restaurant.

There are a plethora of après options in Pas de la Casa, starting with Cala Bassa Costa Rodona (CBbC) , at the base of the mountain. It is the sister establishment to Cala Bassa Beach Club in Ibiza, and brings that party atmosphere to this mountain town.

The former Les Abelletes is now the Mazaya Igloo terrace and is a contender for the title of “Ibiza on snow.” Other popular après options in town include the Red Lion , Milwaukee Bar , Paddy’s Irish Pub , and the Underground .

Hi Ankita and Mohit, I would say that learning to ski can be a little difficult, especially as an adult. But if you are willing to put in the effort, it is definitely worth it. It is by far one of my favorite activities and I always feel so great after a day of skiing! Grandvalira is a great place to learn. The country is great value for your money in every aspect, including lift tickets which cost around 50 euros. The average cost of a lift ticket in the United States is ~130 euros so it is a steal in my mind!

Skiing in Andorra – Soldeu, Pas de la Casa and Arinsal

When I was first invited on a ski trip to Andorra I was a tad apprehensive. But after a quick Google I discovered that skiing in Andorra is PERFECT for all levels of skier, from beginners (like me) to pros. 

In this article I’m going to tell you all about my Andorra ski holiday. From the different Andorra ski resorts to what to do when you’re not skiing, I’ve got you covered. Let’s hit the slopes.

Skiing in Andorra – A Guide

How to get to andorra.

Most people choose to reach Andorra by flying into Barcelona airport . From there the transfer time is around 4 hours.

Andorra can also be reached from other airports such as Toulouse. The transfer time from Toulouse is 2-3hours. 

Transfers are normally included as part of your ski holiday if you book through a ski specialist travel agency.

Andorra Ski Resorts

There are plenty of different ski resorts in Andorra and they all have their pros and cons. I’m going to focus on Soldeu, Pas de la Casa and Arinsal as they are the ones I skied (or attempted to) and spent my time in.

Skiing in Soldeu

Soldeu is part of the Grand Valira ski resort. Grand Valira is the largest ski resort in the Pyrennes with over 200km of runs and 128 slopes, connecting Soldeu and Pas de la Casa.

Grand Valira lift passes start from €30 for a morning pass or €51 for a day pass. You can see the full list of prices here . 

Soldeu has been named one of the best budget ski destinations in Europe. It is also a great ski resort for beginners and it’s more family-friendly than other resorts such as Pas de la Casa.

For both of the above reasons Soldeu is very popular with Irish and English tourists and most people in the area speak English.

The lift up to the slopes in Soldeu is a bit of a longer walk than some of the other resorts. This is always my least favourite part of skiing because I feel like Robocop trying to walk around in the ski boots. 

I visited in January so there was pretty much no queue for any of the ski lifts at any of the resorts. I imagine around the February half term it’s probably a very different story altogether.

During my time in Soldeu I took two ski lessons. My group had an instructor called Liam who, in his spare time, plays in a local band. He was a funny and encouraging.

However, we did two 2hr lessons and halfway through the second one I had had more than enough. I called it quits and heading back down to dump my rented ski gear (from Shus Ski Rental) and have a shower. 

Knowing when to quit is VERY important when skiing. I mean, it’s really about the après-ski anyway, right?!

Out of the three Andorra resorts that I’m reviewing here I think Soldeu is the best for beginners. There is a button lift and rope pull on the beginner slopes which I definitely prefer to the carpet lifts and the beginner slopes are not too steep or icy (or they weren’t when I was there in January).

Between lessons I had lunch at the La Cabana Espiolets restaurant which is right by the nursery slopes. It is a sort of cafeteria situation where you choose what you’d like and it’s dished out to you. The portions were hearty and the food was tasty. 

Not everything is about the slopes and skiing. So, what about the actual town of Soldeu?

I stayed at Hotel Himalaia in Soldeu. They have a very decent breakfast with omelette/fried egg station that will keep you going until lunch time on the slopes. They also have a sauna, Turkish bath and hot tub on site – prefect for relaxing after a hard day on the slopes.

The rooms are cozy with modern Alpine design. My room had a balcony overlooking the main street which was nice for the views but also got a bit noisy when people were out partying in the bar across the road.

There’s not too much to do in the actual town of Soldeu apart from eating, drinking, a spot of shopping and relaxing in the spa. 

When it comes to food there are some great places to eat in Soldeu. La Cort del Popaire is a beautiful little restaurant in a stone building where you can watch them cooking your meal over the grill. 

Pessons Lake Restaurant or Refugi del Llac de Pessons , though not actually in the main town, serves up a delicious meal in an incredible setting. You can ski to this restaurant during the day or you can book an evening meal where you take a snowcat to the restuarant.

Taking a snowcat up to Pessons Lake Restaurant was one of my favourite experiences during my stay at Soldeu. The restaurant itself was beautifully decorated in full mountain lodge style. The vegetarian options were wonderful and the dessert was spectacular, highly recommend!

Skiing in Pas de la Casa

Pas de la Casa is a younger, more vibrant ski resort where people like to party. It’s still nowhere near as wild as the party resorts of Austria and France, but for Andorra it’s as wild as it gets.

Pas de la Casa is also part of Grand Valira so the lift pass prices are the same as I mentioned earlier. 

The ski lift is a bit easier to get to than the one in Soldeu, but the beginner slope is a bit of pain because there are two carpet lifts (no one likes a carpet lift). The area in front of the lifts in Pas de la Casa can get a bit crowded, I wouldn’t like to see it in February or March to be honest.

That being said I really enjoyed my time in Pas de la Casa. We had two lessons there and Yann, an actual Andorran, was our instructor. He’s a fishing guide during the summer. I liked him a lot. He was very straight to the point, no frills and broke down the techniques really well.

We did a green and blue slope all the way to the bottom and it was so much fun. It was an awfully long chair lift to the top of it, but it was very fun on the way down.

The après-ski at the nursery slopes was wild. There was rap blaring from the speakers, people dancing and drinking. I’ve no idea how those people drinking managed to make it down to the bottom at the end of the day.

We had lunch up at the top of the slopes. It was just a baguette and some crisps but the hot chocolate was delicious. It’s definitely not the best place for beginners because you have to ski down. I’d stick with the bar at the nursery slopes if you’re not a confident skiier.

SIDE NOTE – Always be careful when you have your skis off and are walking around the bars/restaurants. It can get a bit icy and a slip could be dangerous.

We used Rent a Ski rental shop for our equipment. There was a puppy there during our visit, I can’t guarantee that for your visit but you never know.

If you’re feeling homesick then make sure to check out the local Irish bar, Paddy’s. There’s a snowboard and set of skis strapped to the ceiling. If you’re up to the challenge you can be lifted up, strapped into the snowboard/skis and fed copious amounts of alcohol as you hang upside down. FUN TIMES.

Skiing in Arinsal

Arinsal is part of the Vallnord ski area which consists of Pal-Arinsal and Arcalis. There are 93km of runs for skiers to take advantage of. 

Vallnord (including Arcalis) lift pass prices start from €86 for a 2 day pass. Pal-Arinsal lift pass prices start from €35 for a half-day pass. You can view the full list of prices HERE .

Personally, I loved the town of Arinsal, but very much did not enjoy the skiing. The nursery slopes were steeper than Soldeu and Pas de la Casa and they were incredibly icy when we visited. Of course, that was January – I’m sure they’re better in Feb/March.

The nursery slopes have carpet lifts, which, as I’ve mentioned, are not great. Our instructor, Kayleigh (or Ceilidh) was very positive and supportive. Though I 100% ended up in tears and hyper ventilating because I did NOT love the green/blue slopes.

Of course, that was just my experience. The more experienced skiers in my group really enjoyed Arinsal. 

Arinsal is a very picturesque little town. During my time there I stayed at the 4* Princesa Parc Hotel . The rooms are bright and modern and they have a lovely spa. It’s also very close to the cable car and ski slopes.

We had lunch in Restaurant 360 and it was probably my favourite meal of the whole trip. The restaurant has a lovely outdoor terrace and a very veggie-friendly menu.

If you want a fun night out then head to the Irish bar, Derby Irish Pub, and it’s only a 5 minute walk from the Princesa Parc Hotel.

Things to do in Andorra When You’re Not Skiing

Caldea thermal spa.

If you want a bit of R&R head straight to Caldea Thermal Spa. It is absolutely perfect for relaxing those muscles after a hard day on the slopes. Even if you haven’t been skiing it’s just the perfect place for a bit of self care. 

They have all sorts of facilities from a pool full of grapefruit (refreshing!) to a lazy river. There are saunas, steam rooms and hammams, which should warm you up after being out in the cold. 

Jacuzzis are absolutely everywhere, even on the roof. The outdoor heated pool on the rooftop is definitely my favourite part of Caldea Thermal Spa as it has jacuzzi chairs and incredible views. 

Best let’s talk practicalities. The spa provides robes, towels and slippers if you have bought a ticket for Inúu. Otherwise you can rent them for a small fee. So really you just need to bring swimwear. There are lockers where you can store your valuables too.

Inúu is the adults only space and the other spaces (Thermoludic and Likid) are open to children and adults.

You can buy tickets to Thermoludic from around €33 per person. Tickets to Inúu start from approximately €60 depending on the time of day and year. If you buy entrance to Inúu you also have access to Origins and Thermoludic.

You can buy 3 day passes to Inúu or Thermoludic which work out cheaper. The 3 day Inúu pass brings the daily rate down to around €50/day. It might seem pricey but honestly you feel like incredible afterwards. It is truly relaxing.

Shopping in Andorra la Vella

Shopping in Andorra can yield great bargains. Perfume, cosmetics, alcohol and tobacco products are what people usually go for. I got myself a large bottle of Captain Morgan’s for €10. 

The VAT on these items is lower in Andorra than most other European countries, so you can definitely save money buying your favourite items while in Andorra instead of at home.

Some goods are only subject to 4.5% tax in comparison to 19% in most of Europe. 

However, there are limits on how much of certain items that you can take out of Andorra. For example, 5 litres of wine, 1.5 litres of spirits, 75g of perfume, 150 cigars etc. You can read the complete guidelines HERE .

Book Your Ski Trip to Andorra

I visited Andorra with DirectSki who organised pretty much everything for me. All of their ski packages include return flights with 20KG luggage allowance, return transfers from the airport to the resort and back, accommodation and in-resort Rep service.

Jan 26-28 | feb 2-4 | feb 9-11 | feb 16-18 | feb 23-25 | mar 1-3 | mar 8-10 | mar 15-17 |, a unique ski weekend in andorra, where we do all the nice things and have all the good times we can in three days. only a couple of hours from downtown barcelona, this is the perfect after-work/school trip for people living in the city, as well as an easy and cheap flight from anywhere in europe.  we’ve been working hard on getting the mix of snow sports and partying just right, and we’ve found that the best formula is to have as much fun as is physically possible over the weekend and then pass out on the bus on the way home – content, a little sore, and with a small hangover. keep reading for a little itinerary of what happens on these trips..

Andorra White Christmas and Barcelona New Year’s Eve

Dec 28-jan 1 (add extra days on either side as you wish), two days and nights skiing, boarding and partying in andorra (including everything you can read below but with a heavy christmas theme) followed by two days and nights eating, exploring, partying and getting twisted for new year’s eve in barcelona. all parties, two banquet dinners with bottomless wine (including new year’s eve), nye club entry in barcelona, guided tours, ski gear and lift tickets, transport from barcelona to andorra and back, heaps of goodies and bottomless good times., ride with us ski and snowboard trips from barcelona to andorra.

We want to bring back the glamorous age of European alpine travel with our Grand Andorra Après Ski Weekenders. On Friday we’ll meet in downtown Barcelona and get to know our new best friends for the weekend (and beyond!) before throwing our luggage in the private bus and riding the two-or-so hours through Catalunya and the foothills of the Pyrenees into Andorra. Once we get to our hotel there’s time to check into our rooms and maybe even explore the village. We’ll dine together and the wine will flow, and so will the conversation – and make sure you wear your fabulous woollen sweaters, because we’ll end the night in a bar, where it’s known to get wild. Or for those not feeling the bar, some of us can stay behind and play board games in our cozy hotel… It’s too nice!

We’re up bright and early again on the Sunday for one last day of looking wonderful on the mountain before heading back to Barcelona. We’re going to be tired, we’re going to be sore, we might even be a little tired, but we will be relaxed, with a smile from ear to ear, and a whole bunch of new friends.

Lots of stuff to do…

Friday a warm welcome.

• Check-in at 10am in Plaza d’Espanya in front of the Catalonia Hotel ready to jump on our private bus to Andorra. Journey up takes around three hours with one bathroom/snacks/drinks break on the way
• Arrive Andorra and check in at our 4* mountainside hotel
• Grab our hire gear, check out the village, hit some bars, settle in for our fireplace Christmas sweater drinks (and receive your Stoke Andorra Ski Weekender hamper)
• Welcome dinner at the hotel with bottomless wine to meet your new mates 
• An hour of open bar in the best nightspot in town to get the party started
• A few drinks and bed, or a few too many drinks and eventually bed, in our favourite bar(s) in the village. 

Saturday Ski, Board, Après-Ski

• Breakfast at the hotel and hit the gondola across the road to reach the mountain
• Ski and board your brains out across the two resorts of Arinsal and Pal
• Check the WhatsApp group chat to see who’s meeting where for food or high-altitude drinks
• Après-ski party at the bottom of the mountian with Schnappy Hour before heading down to an outdoor terrace in the village for a crazy apres-ski with DJs. You can go to the hotel to get changed first or just rage in your ski suit
• Tonight’s dinner is up to us. We’ll be recommending our favourite spots and making plans for the group, but feel free to go your own way
• Again, sleep for the skiers or rage with the ragers/skiers. Saturday nights are always a blast. 

Sunday Breaky, Ski, Go Home

• Breakfast at the hotel
• Hit the slopes for a solid half day of fun. Hit that black run that you’ve been looking at if you’re feeling brave
• Meet at the bus at 3pm for a 3:30 departure 
• Evening return to Barcelona, exhausted & exhilarated (note: we usually arrive around 9pm, but sometimes traffic can slow us down a lot so plan for the last flight home on Sunday, or even better on Monday morning)

AN OFTEN OVERLOOKED PYRENEAN TREASURE.

Squeezed in between Spain and France high in the Pyrenees, Andorra is usually omitted from most travelers’ itineraries. Well it shouldn’t be! It’s  so beautiful your eyes will weep snow flakes, and right next to Barcelona.

That’s right, Andorra is tax free, so drinking, smoking and pornography is cheaper here than in other European countries. Hooray!

ACTUALLY GETTING TO BARCELONA

Check  GoEuro  for the best deals on flights, buses and trains. One thing to remember is that Girona Airport, which sometimes yields the cheapest option, is over an hour by bus from downtown Barcelona, so try to fly into El Prat.

What should I bring?

A ski suit most importantly since you can’t hire them in Andorra, a cosy jumper for the log fire welcome party,  warm clothes to sleep in, and something awesome to party in, a camera, condoms (better safe than sorry!), cash, gloves, sunscreen and sunglasses.

What if I can’t snowboard/ski?

Have no fear snow bunnies! Andorra has a giant beginner area with easy slopes the whole way down. You also can pre-purchase lessons (3 hours Sat and 3 hours Sunday) email [email protected] to add lessons to your booking

How much do these lessons cost?

Lessons are €65 for two days (six hours in total) of boarding and skiing. You’ll be shredding before you know it!

Is there experienced terrain as well?

Yep! The included lift pass allows you to access all the mountains under the Vallnord name. There are also buses to the other mountains and terrain you can check out when there.

What if we want to make our own way there?

Then you can choose the meet us there option.  Unfortunately if you want to ride with us one way though it won’t affect the price, so you’ll have to book the Ride with us option and just let us know which journey you’ll be missing.

Where do we meet the bus to go to Andorra?

You will meet one of our gorgeous Stokies outside the Catalonia Hotel on Plaza d’Espanya. You will receive an email about 2 weeks before departure with all the information, no worries! 

Can I be roomed with my friends?

We would rather you be roomed with your buddies, even if it’s just the two of you! For upgrades and rooming requests just email [email protected] . 

Can we decide on the day if we want to Snowboard or Ski?

By default if you don’t choose the snowboard add on you will be put down as skiing. If you change your mind please find your guide and we will see if there is any availability but cannot promise anything! So to avoid disappointment, make up your mind before coming.

Included in the Grandvalira and Arinsal lift passes is Ordino-Arcalis, which is a snowboarder’s go to. This Andorra ski touring itinerary was created for experienced backcountry skier. You will spend 5-6 hours on your feet per day, and gain between 800 to 1,200 m (2,625-3,940 ft) of elevation.

However, your guide can adapt the skiing and summits to your physical and technical level, as well as to weather conditions. This means that if you have beginner in your group, your guide can organize the days to suit your abilities. There are plenty of possibilities for all levels!

To participate in the Andorra ski touring adventure, you need to be in excellent physical shape. You will need to manage controlled descents in variable conditions. All participants should feel comfortable on challenging blue or black-level resort runs and be able to carry a loaded daypack while skinning up variable degrees of terrain.

You will be skiing, touring, and summiting on glaciated terrain for 5-6 hours every day. Your guide will take care of the planning, oversee your technique, and teach you how to better manage the terrain. They also have the experience and avalanche training necessary to keep you safe.

For technical backcountry ski touring gear , you will need to bring:

• Alpine touring skis, telemark skis or splitboard with skins (can be rented)
• Touring boots and poles (can be rented)
• Avalanche safety equipment (can be rented):
• Digital, 3-antenna avalanche transceiver or beacon
• Lightweight snow shovel
• Avalanche probe

For personal items , we recommend bringing:

• Backpack — 30L, it should be easy to attach skis to

• Headband or hat (cap or sun hat for hot days)
• Thin and thicker gloves
• Wind and waterproof shell jacket with hood (Gore-Tex recommended)

• For the Andorra ski touring, the usual client-to-guide ratio is 6:1.
• The tour can go ahead even with only one participant signed up.
• The cost per person decreases as the group grows, so it’s the perfect opportunity to hike with friends and family!

Andorra doesn’t have its own airport, but it’s conveniently located between France and Spain, and reaching it by bus or car is easy. Nearest airports are Toulouse-Blagnac Airport (TLS) in France and Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport (BCN) in Spain. It will take you anywhere between 2.5 and 3.5 hours to reach Andorra by bus or by car.

The exact meeting point will vary depending on your accommodation. Andorra offers a wide range of lodging options for all budgets. You will stay in comfortable lodgings and each day move to a different area. It’s important to note that Andorra is a small country and all starting points are located close to one another, typically within an hour’s drive from the hotel.

Centro Historico

After touring Casa de la Vall, visitors can stroll through the charming historic center of Andorra la Vella, filled with the sturdy and gorgeous original 16th- and 17th-century buildings that have stood the test of time.

To get the best views of Andorra la Vella and the surrounding area, check out the Sola Irrigation Canal Trail, which winds through the hills that rise up from the small city. Meandering along the canal trail is a perfect way to end an afternoon in the city.

La Noblesse du Temps

Andorra la Vella also boasts an original work from a world-renowned Spanish artist. 'La Noblesse du Temps' is a massive, 16-foot (5-m) tall bronze sculpture cast by hand by Salvador Dalí himself in 1984.

Puente de Paris

Another unmissable photo op in Andorra la Vella is the Puente de Paris bridge. Small in size but big in personality, this peculiar-looking bridge connects the two sides of town separated by the Gran Valira river.

Just outside Andorra la Vella, in the town of Les Escaldes, lies the Caldea Spa complex, one of the largest spas in Europe and the tallest building in Andorra. Towering 18 stories high, it features countless thermal baths, pools, and steam rooms.

Church of Santa Coloma

Possibly the oldest church in all of Andorra is the Church of Santa Coloma, near Andorra la Vella. Built around the 8th century, the pre-Romanesque church is one of the only of its kind in Andorra, and features original religious frescoes on the interior.

Valira d'Orient

Running through the center of Andorra is the Gran Valira river, the largest river in Andorra. Walking through the many trails of the Valira d'Orient, through which the Gran Valira runs, grants stunning views of the surrounding mountains and grasslands.

The picturesque town of Encamp is an essential stop during any visit to Andorra. Settled in almost the exact center of the country, Encamp is home to many cozy cafés and shops, and is also home of the National Automobile Museum.

Església de Sant Romà de les Bons

Romanesque churches and ruins are scattered all across Andorra. One of the oldest, the church of Sant Romà de les Bons, is just on the outskirts of Encamp. Built in 1164, it is registered by the Cultural Heritage of Andorra organization.

Adrenaline junkies won't want to miss the Tobotronc, the longest alpine slide in the world. Located just outside of Sant Julià de Lòria, the Tobotronc winds 3.3 miles (5.3 km) through the Pyrenean alpine forests.

Pas de la Casa

Andorra has no shortage of prime spots for snowsports, and Pas de la Casa is one of the best. In the far north of Andorra, near the French border, Pas de la Casa offers countless slopes, accessible by the 30 ski lifts scattered along the mountainside.

Madriu-Perafita-Claror

The largest of Andorra's numerous national parks, Madriu-Perafita-Claror is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The park is home to roe deer, eagles, and wild boars.

One of the most charming villages in Andorra is the town of Ordino. Located in the north of Andorra, at the foot of the Casamanya mountain, the 16th- and 17th-century architecture hosts inviting streetside cafés and old historical museums.

When wandering through the northern town of Canillo, visitors should be sure to make time to visit the church of Sant Joan de Caselles, an old 12th-century church that holds some incredibly well-preserved frescoes and stucco images.

Just outside of Canillo is the magnificent Mirador Roc del Quer. This unforgettable viewpoint towers 6,417 feet (1,956 m) above sea level and is equipped with a suspended glass floor that grants visitors unprecedented views of the majestic Pyrenees mountains.

Vallnord, the premier ski resort in the western part of Andorra, boasts a total of 39 miles (63 km) of marked terrain. Once the sun goes down, the cozy ski village at the foot of the mountain is a perfect place to relax.

The westward village of Anyós is a picturesque village ripe for wandering. Visitors to Anyós during July can take part in the annual Fiesta Mayor de Anyós, in honor of San Cristóbal. The centerpiece of the festivities is the blessing of a carriage in the center of town, representative of the blessing of all cars and vehicles that traverse the often demanding mountain roads of Andorra.

Valls del Comapedrosa

Another of Andorra's gorgeous national parks, Valls del Comapedrosa lies in the northwest of the country. Here is where you'll find the highest point in Andorra, Coma Pedrosa. Towering 9,656 feet (2,943 me) above sea level, the mountain is a popular destination for mountain climbers.

Estany de les Truites

For those who aren't afraid of a hike, hiking up to Estany de les Truites is a must. Near the Refugi de Comapedrosa, this glacial lake is a wonderful place for a swim and to take in the breathtaking views of the Pyrenees.

Visitors with a penchant for the glamorous won't want to miss the smaller ski resort of Soldeu, in the northeastern corner of Andorra. One would be remiss to visit Andorra without trying the local cuisine. Escudella, the national dish of Andorra and a Catalan mainstay as old as time, is a wonderful mixture of pasta shells, local veggies, and meats. Sant Marti Church

Waiting amongst the fields outside the town of La Cortinada is another ancient Romanesque church, dedicated to Sant Marti de La Cortinada. Originally built around the 12th century, this marvelous work of architecture was restored during the 1600s.

Grandvalira

The largest ski resort in Andorra, Grandvalira is truly something to behold. With a grand total of 130 miles (210 km) of marked trails, this is truly a skier's paradise. Grandvalira is also one of the only resorts in Andorra that offers night skiing, an experience no lover of the sport would want to miss.

Sant Serni de Nagol

One of the most magnificent Romanesque relics in the south of Andorra is the beautiful church of Sant Serni de Nagol. Still standing tall in the green fields of the Pyrenean highlands, this church was first erected during the 11th century.

Pic del Port Vell

For visitors with the hiking bug, Pic del Port Vell is a must. Straddling the border with Spain, the trail leading to the summit of 8,711 feet (2,655 m) is lined with colorful wildflowers and sturdy mountain grasses. If you're lucky, you might even get a glimpse of the beautiful Pyrenean chamois ibex.

Museu del Tabac

One of the main attractions of the southern village of Sant Julià de Lòria is the Museu del Tabac, more formally known as Museo Fábrica Reig. An old tobacco factory, Andorra's main export, visitors can tour the premises and learn all the ins and outs of tobacco cultivation.

Embarking on a summertime ski vacation to South America is surprisingly easy to navigate. Unlike traditional winter ski vacations in the Northern Hemisphere, the children are out of school, and there are no holiday obligations to juggle.

Ninety minutes by car from the Santiago airport is Valle Nevado. A steep, switchbacking, two-lane road makes for a dizzying vertical rise from the city that takes you above the urban mayhem to a little village of hotels, restaurants and sprawling, wide-open ski runs.

Valle Nevado is situated alongside two other locally popular ski areas: La Parva and El Colorado. A common lift ticket for all three gives you access to 7,000 acres of skiable terrain. Valle Nevado also accepts three North American-based season passes: Ikon, Mountain Collective and Power Pass.

This Luxury Swiss Mountain Resort Just Joined the Ikon Pass for the 2024/2025 Season

St. Moritz will become the latest ski resort in the Swiss Alps to join the Ikon Pass

It’s about to get easier to visit the luxury Swiss mountain town of St. Moritz thanks to the resort joining the Ikon Pass for the 2024/2025 ski season.

St. Moritz will become the latest ski resort in the Swiss Alps to accept the pass, which is owned by the Alterra Mountain Company and offers access to dozens of different mountain destinations on five continents, the company shared with Travel + Leisure . The resort is made up of nine areas and known for its high-end luxury .

St. Moritz will join Zermatt Matterhorn as the second Swiss resort on the Ikon Pass. Pass holders will be able to ski up to seven days at St. Moritz with no blackout dates.

“We are thrilled to offer more of Switzerland as we welcome St. Moritz and invite the Ikon Pass community to discover all that these incredible nine areas within St Moritz have to offer,” Erik Forsell, the chief marketing officer of the Alterra Mountain Company, said in a statement shared with T+L. “From the picturesque slopes to the incredible food to the Swiss alpine culture, St. Moritz is the new destination to add to your bucket list.”

The Ikon Pass is currently on sale for the 2024/2025 season and includes access to 59 different mountains across 11 countries. Beyond Switzerland, the pass also offers access to skiing in four other European countries: Austria, France, Italy, and Andorra. 

The Ikon Pass currently costs $1,249 for next season with prices set to go up by $110 after April 18.

Ikon Pass holders have unlimited access to 17 different mountains and up to seven days each at 41 other locations.

In addition to the Ikon Pass, the company offers several other options like the Ikon Base Pass, which offers more limited access and starts at $869, and the Ikon Session Pass, which offers two-, three-, and four-day access and starts at $259. Learn more at ikonpass.com .
