Phil Lesh Announces Summer Tour Dates

Kevin Johnson

Grateful Dead founder Phil Lesh has unveiled a string of summer dates with his band Phil Lesh and Friends. The legendary bassist will have a host of special guests during his concerts, which will focus on the West Coast before heading east.

His first concert is scheduled for June 4th at the Frost Amphitheater at Stanford in Palo Alto, California during which he will be joined by John Scofield, Scott Metzger, and Benmont Tench. He’ll then head to Oregon, Washington, and Colorado before flying to Bridgeport, Connecticut on July 1st. His summer concerts are slated to wrap up at Seatgeek Stadium on August 26th, though an October run at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York is already on the books.

Phil Lesh and Bob Weir Announce First Ever Duo Tour

After a successful headlining set at Peter Shapiro's Lockn' Festival in Arrington, Virginia, Bob Weir and Phil Lesh are embarking on a three-city, six-show tour produced by Shapiro, the Brooklyn Bowl…

By Dave Brooks

Phil Lesh and Bob Weir

What is Phil Lesh planning for his surprise duo tour with Grateful Dead co-founder Bob Weir ?

“We’re going to play everything we can think of,” Lesh tells Billboard . “We’’re going to do his stuff, we’re going to do my stuff, we’re going to play Jerry’s stuff, we’ll do Grateful Dead stuff and we’ll do covers. We’re going to try and play everything we’ve ever played together and maybe some new stuff too.”

After a successful headlining set at Peter Shapiro’s Lockn’ Festival in Arrington, Virginia, Weir and Lesh are embarking on a three-city, six show tour produced by Shapiro, the Brooklyn Bowl founder and Relix Magazine publisher who promoted the 2015 Fare Thee Well shows for Lesh, Weir, Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart, joined by Trey Anastasio, Bruce Hornsby and Jeff Chimenti, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Grateful Dead.

Dead & Company Reschedule New Orleans & Florida Shows Following John Mayer's Emergency…

“During these turbulent times it’s reassuring to have the music of the Grateful Dead, which has been part of the foundation of American music over the past half-century,” Shapiro tells Billboard . “The Dead’s music and the improvisation they inspire are timeless, but one of the reasons for that is people keep reinventing the songs. To have the guys that originally created the music keep reinventing it themselves uplifts people. I think Bobby and Phil performing together for the first time as a duo will elevate people’s spirits. And we can probably use some of that right now.”

Trending on Billboard

Lesh says performing as a duo and ditching the backing band leaves him and Weir exposed, but says the upside is a singular focus on musically weaving around and through Weir’s improvisational style.

“I can hear him so clearly and is so easy to respond and work through him, it’s really delightful,” Lesh tells Billboard.  “When it’s just the two of us, it takes us to a different level because there’s nobody else that we have to have to compensate for or work with.”

The Bobby and Phil duo tour kicks off March 2 and 3 at Radio City Music Hall in New York, then heads to Boston’s Wang Theater (March 7-8) and then Chicago Theatre (March 10-11). To buy tickets, fans can sign up for the Ticketmaster Verified Fan Presale starting today at 7 a.m. ET at bobbyandphilduotour.tmverifiedfan.com . Tickets will be available to the public on Dec. 15 at 10 a.m. local time at Ticketmaster.

This new project came about as Weir and Lesh celebrated the 40-year anniversary of the Grateful Dead’s 1977 studio album Terrapin Station . Earlier this year, the two performed at Lesh’s own Terrapin Crossroads music venue and restaurant in San Rafael, California, as well as Lockn’ Festival and Sound Summit on Mount Tamalpais, each time with a backing band filling in the set.

“I think it will be more stimulating than the recent performances we’ve done together.” Less says. “It’s just easier to hear and easier to respond to Bob when it’s just us two. It heightens the focus on the totality of the music. It becomes an unconscious mental state — just Bobby and I up there reacting to each other and exploring our musical boundaries.”

Bob Dylan, Phil Lesh To Co-Headline Summer Tour

phil lesh summer tour

Folk-rock icon Bob Dylan and ex- Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh will co-headline a summer tour of outdoor venues.

An online auction of posters, wristbands, camping gear and other paraphernalia signed or hand-picked by the musicians will coincide with the tour. The proceeds will benefit school music programs.

"This is a joint headliner," Lesh spokesperson J.C. Juanis said. "We will alternate the closing spot throughout the tour, and, as we did last year at select shows, we hope to do spontaneous jamming."

Jam bands Widespread Panic , the String Cheese Incident and Guster will open on select dates.

An auction to benefit school music programs, online at eBay.com, features passes to the Mountain Aire festival, posters, T-shirts and a selection of camping gear hand-picked by Lesh. Continuing auction offerings throughout the tour will include concert memorabilia such as backstage passes and posters signed by Dylan and Lesh. High bidders can buy the chance to speak with Lesh and request songs for the band to play then receive an autographed CD of the set.

This summer's tour is not the first pairing of the two veteran rockers; Dylan and Lesh toured together in fall 1999. Dylan also teamed with the Grateful Dead for a few national runs in the 1980s, spawning a 1989 live album — Dylan & the Dead — on which the Dead served as the legendary singer/songwriter's backup band.

On their own, the Dead covered numerous Dylan tunes, including "All Along the Watchtower," "Queen Jane Approximately" and the Lesh-sung "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues."

Dylan has covered the Dead's "Alabama Getaway" and "West L.A. Fadeaway" in concert, and his vast repertoire of tunes includes "Silvio" and "The Ugliest Girl in the World," both co-written with Dead lyricist Robert Hunter for Down in the Groove (1988).

Dylan won a Grammy Award in 1998 for his album, Time Out of Mind, which featured tunes such as "Dirt Road Blues" ( RealAudio excerpt ). Most recently, Dylan released "Things Have Changed." The song appeared in the film "Wonder Boys."

Lesh has been playing with various lineups, including Phil Lesh and Friends , since the Dead disbanded following the death of guitarist Jerry Garcia . This summer's lineup includes ace guitarist Robben Ford ( George Harrison , Miles Davis , Joni Mitchell ), Little Feat guitarist Paul Barrere and keyboardist Billy Payne , and drummer John Molo ( Bruce Hornsby , the Other Ones ).

The bassist opted out of this summer's Furthur festival tour — the first since 1998 — which features his ex-bandmates Bob Weir , Mickey Hart , Bruce Hornsby and others as the Other Ones, a post-Garcia incarnation of the Dead formed in 1997 with Lesh on bass.

Lesh begins the summer with a set Memorial Day weekend at the Mountain Aire Festival in Angels Camp, Calif., which also features Latin groove collective Ozomatli , folksinger Ani DiFranco and others.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
  • The interval in the movement of trains in rush hour is  90 seconds .

Traveler Reviews

I cant recommend this tour highly enough. I asked a friend to recommend one thing to do with limited time in Moscow and he said, check out the metro. I did one better, and went on this individual tour yesterday with my very well informed guide, Alina. She took me to a number of stations and explained the history, politics and meanings behind the different sculpures and artworks in a way that made the whole experience far more meaningful than getting on and off the metro without guidance would have done. I had a really fantastic time and was thoroughly impressed. To top it all off, we had lunch and Alina suggested some great things for me to do, even whatsapping me maps, suggestions, and internet links. Today she followed up by messaging me to ask how my day was going and if I had any questions about the city, or recommendations for places to eat, etc. A great tour, a lovely guide and a fantastic experience. I couldnt recommend this tour, or Alina, any more highly. Fantastic!

Dear Friends,

My son and myself visited Moscow for a holiday in April 2018. And we had selected this fantastic tour. Our Guide Mrs. Julia came sharp at 10.00 AM even though she was not feeling well and had sore throat. Thereafter she took us to many Metro stations. Though I had already visited Moscow last year and seen all these stations, she gave phenomenal historic background and many interesting facts. She was almost fluent in English and and a good knowledge of Russian Culture, food and many other things. Overall we enjoyed thoroughly and I will highly recommend this tour with Julia if possible. Truly amazing person. And even more amazing tour.

Our Tour booked for 26 December 2017 was absolutely amazing. Our guide Julia picked us up from our Hotel in St Peterburg on time in a luxury minivan. Thanks to Julia we were able to see most of the tourist attractions that day. She went out of her way for us to make our day special. She had a vast knowledge of all the places that we visited. Lunch was special in a typical Russian restaurant with food from the region. I would definitely recommend this tour.

Picked up in the hotel lobby by our guide, Lylie, who then walked us to the closest Metro. She walked/trained us to 13 different stations and then explained the history of the metro and the significance of the decor in each station. We had plenty of time to photo, view the decor, watch and ride the trains and observe the people coming and going with their daily affairs. The art work/mosaics/sculptures/stained glass/ marble all had a role to play in presenting the history of communist Russia. The Russian metro well deserves the title of the most interesting and outstanding metro in the world. Lylie then took us to lunch, advised us on menu choices and their significance in the Russian culture and was very happy answering our questions on how the younger generation is responding to the new Russia. We had an outstanding guide, a fantastic experience and would highly recommend this tour over and above other tours which merely include a visit to a small number of stations. Lesley and David - Sydney

Great guide! She explained everything and took me to all the important stations. She knew her stuff! Worth it!

Our guide ,Dacha, was charming and very informative. We took the 2 hour tour and saw what Dacha thought were the most beautiful and interesting metro stations. The Metro is certainly worthy of its museum status and we were glad to have some of the designs and features explained to us.
