What is an Open Return ticket?

Open Return tickets allow you to be flexible on the train you decide to travel back on. There are two different ways to buy Open Return tickets.

 • If you started your search by selecting Return journey you'll be asked to choose which train you want to return on, even if the ticket you select is an Open Return ticket.
 • If you started your search by selecting Open Return then the same ticket will be offered, but you don't need to select the train you want to return on.

The main benefit of booking a Return, instead of an Open Return is the option of reserving a seat. If you'd like to reserve a seat, search for a Return ticket, if you're not fussed about seat reservations and aren't sure when you're returning, pick an Open Return.

Here are the different types of Open Return tickets available –

Anytime Return - the outward portions of Anytime Returns are valid for five days, including the date on the ticket. You must return within one calendar month of the outward travel date specified. For example, if you bought an Anytime Return for 1st Feb you could wait 'til 5th Feb to make your outward journey.

Anytime Day Return - your outbound and return travel can be on any train on the date specified. For example, if you bought an Anytime Day Return for 1st Feb you would have to take your outward and return journey on 1st Feb.

Off-Peak Return - your outward journey must be on Off-Peak trains on the date specified, and you must return on Off-Peak trains within one calendar month.

Off-Peak Day Return - your outbound and return journey can be on any Off-Peak train on the date specified.

Super Off-Peak Return - you can return on any Super Off-Peak train within one calendar month.

If you’re unsure about when you can travel, our Train Times page clearly highlights whether a train is Peak, Off-Peak or Super Off-Peak.

Please note: Your ticket may be valid on specified operators only.

Are train return tickets being scrapped? Our finance expert explains the plans

Return rail fares could be scrapped in a shake-up of the train ticket system – but will 'single leg pricing' be more expensive?

 • Sign up to our newsletter Newsletter

With plans for return train tickets to be scrapped hitting the headlines, what does this mean for those of us who regularly travel by train?

Buying train tickets in the UK is not just pricey – it can be really complicated to get the cheapest ticket. Rail passengers planning a long journey have a overwhelming choice of advance, peak, off-peak, super off-peak, single and return tickets when they want to go from A to B and then back again.

Fortunately, there are several ways families can get cheap train tickets . Train passengers are also entitled to a refund if planned journeys affected by the ongoing train strikes . (You can read our article about how to get a refund for disrupted travel if commuting or family days out are impacted by industrial action.)

But does the proposed scrapping of return train tickets mean train travel will become cheaper?

Are train return tickets being scrapped?

It’s not been confirmed yet but return train tickets are expected to be scrapped in a shake-up of the British rail system by transport secretary Mark Harper.

Rhiannon Philps , personal finance expert at comparison site NerdWallet, said: "With the news that return rail fares could be scrapped, the question on everyone’s lips is whether this will mean cheaper train tickets.

"According to the rumoured new plans, the price of two single tickets will be the same price as a return ticket costs now. So, if you simply want to travel to and from a location, the cost of the train fare shouldn’t change significantly. However, if you only want to travel one way, you may find your ticket is cheaper.

“At the moment, many single tickets cost almost as much as a return, so the new plans could cut the cost of one-way journeys by almost half.”

The new system could be introduced alongside other changes, such as the end of paper tickets, which will be replaced by digital tickets, and UK-wide smartcards similar to Oyster cards used in London.

The government also plans to re-organise train travel in the UK by setting up a new body called Great British Railways which will take over responsibility for ticketing and timetabling from the Department of Transport.

What will replace return tickets?

If the plans go ahead, return train tickets will be replaced by single leg pricing where passengers buy one ticket for travelling from A to B and another to return from B to A.

This is how rail systems work across most of Europe – so the UK will be switching to a system similar to that used by many other countries.

"The new proposals could also mean that it’s simpler to book tickets for more complicated journeys,” said personal finance expert Rhiannon Philps.

“Rather than having to compare the cost of different ticket types and research whether it’s cheaper to split a journey across multiple tickets, for example, the expected changes could make it simpler for passengers to find and book the tickets they want at the times they need.”

The UK is drastically in need of a new pricing structure for long distance train journeys. According to the Rail Delivery Group there are about 55 million fares available within the UK, with many overlapping or contradicting one another, meaning people often pay more than necessary to travel by train.

Does this mean it will cost me more to travel by train?

So far, it seems that the plans mean that two singles won’t cost any more than a return. But we’ll have to wait and see.

Iain Griffin , founder and CEO of train ticket app Seatfrog , said: "When you buy a return ticket, you are buying two singles - they are just getting wrapped up in a return ticket. Getting rid of the return ticket will give people more flexibility, and it will make journeys cheaper as travellers won't be forced to buy a particular return on a particular day.

“Hopefully, this will make life less complicated for consumers but really nothing changes; now, you buy a ticket but instead of opting for a return, you select your journeys there and back.

"Different fare combinations mean that you should be able to reward somebody for buying two singles instead of just buying one. This development is a move towards this - which is positive. However, it's a basic human right to access a ticket that fits around your life - so these are positive changes - but it should have happened a long time ago.”

These two examples show just how complicated the UK train fare system is. At the moment, two singles are more expensive on some journeys. For example, if you wanted to travel from Birmingham to Manchester on 5 April on the 12.22 train and return on 6 April at 12.35, single tickets would cost £42.10 each, a total of £84.20. But you could get an Off-Peak Return, valid on the same trains, for just £43.40.

You could cut the cost of the return journey from Manchester to £16.50 by using split ticketing – dividing your journey by buying separate tickets for different parts of the journey. But the total cost would still come to more than the cost of a return ticket. So, if return tickets were scrapped, you’d pay more for this journey.

But on other journeys, two singles might be cheaper than a return. For example, if you wanted to travel from London to Sheffield and back on 9 February, you could get a single for the outward leg for £23 and the return leg for £31.50 if you could commit to travelling on specific trains. This adds up to a total of £54.50. A super off-peak return, which gives you more flexibility, is £87.

What can I do to keep my train travel cheap?

Here are some ways to cut the cost of train travel:

 • Book 12 weeks in advance for the cheapest train tickets
 • Travel on off-peak trains where possible
 • Use split ticketing to divide your journey into cheaper legs
 • Use digital tickets rather than paying to have advance tickets sent to you
 • Avoid booking fees by shopping around for tickets
 • Use a Railcard to get a discount if you travel by train regularly
 • Consider taking a coach with National Express of Megabus instead
 • Use Delay Repay to get some or all of your ticket refunded if your train is delayed or cancelled.

Copy My Trip: A grand rail tour of Italy from Rome to Venice

Ann Douglas Lott

Apr 19, 2024 • 7 min read

train return journeys

Rolling through the Italian countryside on a restored 1960s train? A once-in-a-lifetime experience © Sina Hotels

Lonely Planet associate editor Ann Douglas Lott recently traveled through Italy aboard a vintage train, regional trains and bus. Here, she shares some tips and insights for anyone planning a similar trip.

When I told people I had a trip planned to Italy , the joy with which they talked about their own travels there was endless – the dreamy landscapes, the fascinating ruins, the life-changing slice of pizza they had, how their daily cup of coffee just hasn't compared since – but I knew I wouldn't truly understand that joy until I experienced it for myself.

Yes, I was recently a first-timer in one of the planet's most-visited destinations, so my expectations were exceedingly lofty. The plan was a grand rail (and occasional bus) tour stopping in Rome , Perugia , Florence and Venice – all in just one week. Initially, the pressure to cram in as much as I could that week was at the front of my mind, but thanks to the Italian art of slow living, I learned to appreciate pacing myself as I journeyed (and ate) my way through this incredible country.

Also a first-timer in Italy? Here's what you should know

L: holding a hotel room key in front of the bed; R: A view of the hotel pool from a room balcony

Where did you stay? What was the vibe?

Four fabulous destinations meant four fabulous, centrally-located hotels to match. I was invited to stay at a different five-star Sina hotel in each city: the 150-year-old Bernini Bristol in Rome, the hilltop Sina Brufani in Perugia, the classy Villa Medici in Florence and the canal-side Centurion Palace in Venice.

The brand has been owned and operated by the same family for over 60 years, so that classic Italian charm is undeniable. I also just adore a hotel that feels like the destination it's in, so details like the Brufani's elegant, classical decor and the Villa Medici's grand, early 19th-century lobby enhanced the whole experience. While considered luxury hotels, don't dismiss these if you like to stick to a tighter travel budget ; nightly rates at these properties cover a broad spectrum, typically depending on the popularity of the destination. Perugia, for example, would suit a budget traveler more than Florence (Perugia was my favorite stop – more on that later).

Left: A view of the town of Perugia framed by a window; Middle: a swimming pool with glass on its floor that looks over ruins; Right: a view of the Grand Canal in Venice

Some highlights:

 • Sipping Aperol spritzes on the hotel's panoramic rooftop at sunset in Rome
 • The Perugia hotel's pool with a glass bottom that peers into an ancient ruin, plus the view of Umbria's rolling hills from my room
 • The vintage keys and private garden with its own pool at the Florence hotel
 • Enjoying views of the Grand Canal from the Venice property's front porch

Left: a row of green velvet train seats; Top right: a retro, symmetrical viewing cabin at the rear of the train; Bottom right: a view of the mountains through the train window

Favorite activity from the trip?

Let's talk about the ultimate train ride. It's always a good idea to roll through the Italian countryside, but on a beautifully restored 1960s masterpiece? That's a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The Arlecchino is the stuff of Wes Anderson films, with its roomy, brightly colored velvet seats, massive windows, vintage bar car and a chic, retro viewing cabin at either end of the train. Departing from Rome, we crawled through Lazio and into the Umbrian countryside, between green hills, through mountain tunnels and past lovely medieval towns like Assisi .

I count myself lucky to have scored a seat on this journey to Perugia – the Arlecchino doesn't run daily like the Trenitalia lines. But the operator of this line, Fondazione FS Italiene , runs similar journeys throughout the country almost daily, so you can still experience the magic of riding on a vintage Italian train. Tickets can be booked on the website , where you can also learn about each of their historic lines. Prices vary depending on the journey, but most hover around €50 per adult. If you prefer a speedier ride and choose to go the Trenitalia route, staggering views are guaranteed no matter which service you board.

Plan your own rail adventure through Italy with our tips for getting around

Top left: a whole pizza and a beer; Bottom left: gelato with a view of a canal in Venice; Right: walking while holding a sandwich

Best thing you ate?

The aforementioned life-changing slice of pizza? It was a mozzarella and guanciale slice from Zizzi Pizza in Rome. But the best thing I ate was a ridiculously fresh sandwich from I' Bacaro De Bischeri in Venice: warm focaccia, prosciutto, arugula, caramelized onions and burrata.

Honorable mention: the amaretto mousse and tiramisu from Osteria Al Bacareto in Venice, ham and parmesan fettuccine from Harry's Bar The Garden in Florence (conveniently located inside the Villa Medici hotel) and a simple bite of burrata – so fresh it was still warm – in Perugia. Oh, and the whole gelato spread at Gelateria Nico in Venice, though I'm partial to stracciatella (chocolate chip).

Want more Italian restaurant recs? Here's where you should eat in Florence right now

Right: a wall of Murano glass cups; Left: a gallery of glass chandeliers, plants, animals and more

What was the most touristy thing you did?

When in Venice, book a glass factory tour! Our hotel arranged for a water taxi to deliver us to Murano for a factory and gallery tour of Schiavon Art Team's headquarters, one of the island's many glassblowers. The taxi ride across the lagoon was a glamorous experience in itself – a private, classy wooden boat with leather seats – but you can also take a vaporetto to Murano for a fraction of the cost.

We entered a vast gallery of vibrant glass chandeliers, plants, abstract faces and even a mural of the Avengers (they can do it all). But the highlight was observing the glass masters at work – a team of five almost dancing to keep the glass hot while also perfecting the movements and timing of sculpting the given subject, in this case, a beautiful blue marlin. I could've sat there all day, but the canals were calling.

Left: the last few minutes of light over the town of Perugia; Right: looking up in an underground fortress

What was the most under-the-radar activity you enjoyed?

If you need a place to stop between Rome and Florence, this is it. Umbria is everything you love about Italy without the crowds (except during Perugia's annual chocolate and jazz festivals in March and July, respectively), and the one night I spent in Perugia's medieval center wasn't nearly long enough.

While there was still daylight, I toured the underground fortress Rocca Paolina . You can enter the fortress via escalator from a small park called Giardini Carducci , which happens to be a fabulous spot to watch the sunset over the rolling hills of Umbria's countryside. The next morning, head to Sandri for a coffee and pastry – this is Perugia's most famous cafe. It's been a family-run business since 1860, and multiple locals told me it sells the best pastries around.

Right: a pair of red Mary Janes; Middle: a red neck scarf with illustrations of Capri; Right: a glass bead necklace and marbled notebook

Did you bring home a souvenir?

Oh, did I shop. Here's the haul: in Florence, I snagged a pair of red and pink velvet Mary Janes at Bramada . It was a love-at-first-sight-through-the-window kind of moment. The rest of my shopping was in Venice: a marble-covered notebook of watercolor paper from Il Papiro (and regular notebooks for my family), a Murano glass charm necklace from The M Venezia (just €20–25 each) and a vintage red scarf with illustrations of Capri from Vintageria for just €5 – perhaps a sign that Capri should be my next Italian destination?

Best tip for someone who wants to plan the same trip?

The timing of this trip was simply marvelous: March shoulder season, specifically the week before Easter. The weather was decently warm as highs hovered around 15°C (60°F), the sun was mostly shining, and the Easter crowds hadn't yet made their way to the more popular cities. I packed a short, thin coat for the cooler nights and occasional wind.

Also, when you book a regional train ticket (aka, not the stylish Arlecchino), you have to validate it before you board your train. Otherwise, you'll face a hefty fine when ticket inspectors come to scan your ticket on board. Look for one of the green machines at the head of the platform, and insert your ticket to get it stamped. This isn't required on high-speed trains, though – those tickets are valid for a specific train service and seat.

The most beautiful (and budget) train journeys around the world

Posted: 22 January 2024 | Last updated: 22 January 2024

Slow and relaxing, train travel is one of the best ways of getting around if you have the time to spare. Some of the most breathtaking views in the world can be enjoyed from behind a train window and you don't necessarily have to shell out the big bucks for an epic ride. Here we take a look at the world's most scenic train journeys that you won't have to splash out on.

Christchurch to Greymouth, New Zealand

Taking in some of New Zealand's most dramatic landscapes, the TranzAlpine route from Christchurch to Greymouth travels through some of the most incredible sights on the South Island. The train crosses the Canterbury Plains and travels alongside the Waimakariri River before ascending into the mountains where it crosses the Staircase Viaduct. One-way fares start from £116 ($142) and all the seats line up with the huge panoramic windows and roof skylights.

Perhaps one of the most stunning features along the TranzAlpine's route is traversing the snow-capped mountains of Arthur's Pass National Park. The scenery then quickly turns subtropical as the train continues its journey through the west coast's rainforests and one of the best experiences on the train is stepping out on the open-air viewing car.

Glasgow to Mallaig, Scotland, UK

Dubbed Britain's most scenic train route, the West Highland Line runs from the Scottish city of Glasgow to Fort William before continuing its journey towards the port of Mallaig. The journey traverses the Scottish Highlands' epic landscape and passes through the remote wilderness of Rannoch Moor. After a brief stop in Fort William, the train crosses the Glenfinnan Viaduct – the same bridge the Hogwarts Express crosses in the Harry Potter films.

For an even more authentic Harry Potter experience, there's The Jacobite steam train – it's the one used in the films. This year the train is scheduled to run Monday to Friday from early April to late October between Fort William and Mallaig. A standard adult return ticket costs £57 ($69). Otherwise, regular ScotRail trains between Glasgow and Mallaig run every day and a one-way off-peak fare is around £29 ($35).

Built by the British in the late 1800s, Sri Lanka's rail system was originally used to transport tea and coffee for export so it's no surprise that this seven-hour trip takes passengers through stunning tea plantations, remote villages, lush green hills and tumbling waterfalls. If travelling from Kandy, know that the better views are from the seats on the right.

Kandy to Ella, Sri Lanka

One-way tickets from Colombo's Fort station to Kandy cost around £2 ($2.40) for a third-class reserved seat and £5 ($6) for a first-class ticket in an air-conditioned car. The train makes several stops along the way where locals sell fresh fruit and snacks right by the tracks.

Flam to Myrdal, Norway

Often described as one of the most beautiful train rides in the world, this journey is just under two hours and takes in some of the most beautiful scenery Norway has to offer. The Flåm Railway travels from sea level at the Sognefjord in Flåm to the Myrdal mountain station, 2,841 feet (866m) above sea level.

Passing deep ravines, cascading waterfalls and towering peaks, the journey is equally stunning in both summer and winter, when a blanket of snow turns the green landscape into a winter wonderland. The Flåm Railway connects with trains running between Oslo and Bergen, and round-trip fares start from £38 ($46).

Williams to Grand Canyon Village, Arizona, USA

The trip on the Grand Canyon Railway begins in Williams, a small town 30 miles (48km) west of Flagstaff. Meandering its way through ponderosa pine forests and open prairie, the train terminates in Grand Canyon Village on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon National Park before heading back to Williams. On the way, passengers are encouraged to get into the spirit of the Old West and enjoy the musical entertainment, cowboy characters and other surprises.

Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi, Vietnam

When travelling on The Reunification Express line (also known as the North-South Railway) you don't have to choose between seeing historic cities, charming towns and spectacular coastline – this journey has it all. Traversing more than a thousand miles between Hanoi in the north and Ho Chi Minh City in the south, the route is one of Asia's most popular train rides. The full journey takes over two days but you can hop on and off at destinations like Hue and Da Nang.

A trip on this train takes in breathtaking Vietnamese landscapes like Hải Vân Pass, Vân Phong Bay and the Annamite Range. Prices for the full, one-way journey between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City start from £53 ($64) for a soft seat while soft sleeper lower berths with air conditioning start from £74 ($90).

Creel to Los Mochis, Mexico

The Chepe Express , running from the coastal city of Los Mochis in northern Sinaloa to Creel in Chihuahua, is easily one of the most picturesque train journeys you could take without blowing the budget. Throughout the nine-hour trip, the train goes through 86 tunnels and crosses 37 bridges, and traverses the epic canyons of the Sierra Tarahumara, including the Copper Canyon.

It's a brilliant way to explore more of the country as travellers are allowed to make up to three different overnight stops at no extra cost if booking a ticket for the full length of the route. One-way ticket prices start from £113 ($137) in tourist class and £210 ($256) in first class, and there's a dining room on every train serving an à la carte menu.

Winnipeg to Churchill, Manitoba, Canada

Part of VIA Rail Canada's Adventure Routes, the Winnipeg to Churchill route (formerly known as the Hudson Bay and before that the Northern Spirits) is the only dry land connection to Churchill from the rest of Canada. The journey stretches 1,054 miles (1,697km) and takes more than two days to complete.

As the train edges its way closer to Churchill, passengers have the chance to spot unparalleled northern landscapes and maybe even a polar bear or two. Peru is filled with exciting train journeys from the luxurious Belmond Andean Explorer to the much-loved tourist route between Cusco and Machu Picchu. For an unusual (and a more wallet-friendly) experience, travellers should choose the Ferrovías Central railway. Transporting passengers from Lima to Huancayo, the charming capital of Peru's central highlands, it's the second-highest passenger train in the world reaching a height of almost 16,000 feet (4,782m) as it travels through the Andes.

The Maya Train Will Get You to All of Yucatán’s Best Spots. But Not Yet.

In December, the train began running on its first route through Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. On a five-day journey a few months later, the author encountered enthusiasm, and scheduling hiccups.

A singular train track, with one short train, cuts through a lush deep forest.

By Elisabeth Malkin

Elisabeth Malkin has been visiting the Yucatán Peninsula for three decades.

I stepped off the platform at the gleaming new Maxcanú train station, eager to see the magnificent Maya archaeological site of Uxmal. All I needed was a taxi to take me there, a trip of about 30 miles away.

There are no taxis, said the stationmaster, as we stood on the polished limestone floors of the high-ceilinged station, which was cool and breezy despite the brilliant late-morning sun outside. And I was the third person in two weeks to get off at Maxcanú expecting to reach Uxmal, he said.

I was midway through a five-day trip to explore the brand-new Maya Train and several of its destinations in the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico . Designed to run 965 miles (1,554 kilometers) around a loop of 34 stations when completed, the train will whisk passengers in cool comfort through colonial cities, archaeological sites, splashy resorts and tropical forests.

Now I was stunned. Wrangling a taxi has never been a problem in Mexico. But the drivers gathered in the main square of Maxcanú offered only beat-up vans that hopscotch through small towns, where I might or might not find a taxi to Uxmal. The next van was leaving in 45 minutes.

Yucatán’s layers of history have long held me spellbound. During earlier car trips, I have clambered up deserted Maya temples and palaces, stepped into the cool naves of massive 16th-century churches and visited restored haciendas, testaments of the ostentation — and hardship — of the peninsula’s 19th-century plantation economy. Traveling by train, I thought, would allow me to steep myself in more of that history.

But as I found in Maxcanú, a train won’t necessarily get you to where you want to go.

During my February trip, I traveled on the only route then available, an east-west leg that opened in December and runs from Cancún to Mérida, and then south through the port city of Campeche to the Maya site of Palenque (a short route between Cancún and Playa del Carmen opened last month, with three trains a day). I encountered scheduling confusion, unfinished stations and a dearth of trains — just two operating daily each way between Cancún and Campeche, and only one to Palenque. Overnight sleepers and special dining trains seem years away.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador considers the Maya Train his showcase development project, and wants to inaugurate the rest of the train before he leaves office on October 1. Based on my experience, that goal seems elusive.

A $29-billion route through the jungle

I started my journey in Cancún, where in the pre-dawn gloom the station hovered like a glowing spaceship. An attendant scanned the ticket I had bought online and a half-dozen more pointed me toward my tourist-class car, which was about a quarter full. I planned to go to Campeche, about 300 miles away, stopping once each day. At 120 kilometers (about 75 miles) an hour, the train covers the route in about six hours, the same as a car. (When construction is complete, the train’s speed should increase to 160 kilometers an hour.)

The car’s wide windows looked out at a wall of low jungle. The blue-green seats were comfortable and there was ample space between the rows. I bought a very good cappuccino at the snack bar, but declined the plastic-wrapped sandwiches. The rest of the merchandise was fruit cups, milk boxes and junk food.

The train will ultimately cost much more than the $29 billion budgeted so far, and it’s not the first time ambitious planners have alighted on the region. Cancún was once a tiny fishing village, selected half a century ago as a tourist hub. Last year 10 million international tourists flew into its airport, more than the airports of Mexico City, Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta combined.

But uncontrolled growth has stressed the Caribbean coast’s fragile environment. The Maya Train, scientists warn , will push those problems south, threatening the area’s water supply, its unique system of underground limestone caves and its vast nature reserves.

Mr. López Obrador has charged ahead, handing the train over to the military , and arguing that it will spread Cancún’s wealth and attract new visitors. Mexico received more than 42 million overseas tourists last year and they spent almost $31 billion .

Local governments see an opportunity. “The train will allow people to disperse throughout the peninsula,” said Michelle Fridman, the tourism secretary for Yucatán state, which promotes dozens of attractions far beyond highlights like Mérida and Chichén Itzá .

Now that the train is operating, transport companies will begin to connect stations with lesser-known sites nearby, she said.

It’s fair to ask whether the train is the most effective way to develop the peninsula’s tourism. Tour companies already run trips to many sites from major cities, which are well served by buses. Driving a rental car through most of the area is considered safe , according to U.S. State Department travel guidance .

Route of Mexico’s Maya Train

Canceled trip.

It took two hours (and one time-zone change) to reach Valladolid, a colonial city of handsome streets and ancient churches, where I bought the rest of my tickets at the station. A tourist-class ticket from Cancún to Valladolid costs 472 pesos (around $28) for foreigners and 355 pesos (around $21) for Mexicans. First class, with wider seats, costs 755.50 pesos and 566.50 pesos, and discounts are available for older travelers and residents of the five states along the train’s route. (A first-class bus from downtown Cancún to Valladolid costs between 222 and 344 pesos, depending on the time of day, and takes half an hour longer.)

It was impossible to run the new Maya Train tracks into dense city centers and the Valladolid station, like the rest, was outside the urban core. A waiting bus took disembarking passengers downtown, a 15-minute ride for 35 pesos.

That day I toured Ek Balam , the site of a ninth-century Maya kingdom that is dominated by a 100-foot palace distinguished by a facade of carvings depicting winged warriors, stylized animal features and geometric patterns bordered by giant fangs. Admission to the site includes entry to the X-Canché cenote, one of thousands of limestone sinkholes that were sacred to the Maya.

Later that afternoon, I was wandering through the Museum of Ethnic Clothing, a private collection of traditional dress, embroidery and hats, when a WhatsApp message from the ticket office blinked on my phone. My train scheduled for the following day was canceled.

I decided to deal with the problem in the morning and enjoy the city. As I wandered past the antique shops and boutique hotels of the elegant Calzada de los Frailes, it was clear that Valladolid’s tourism, and the infrastructure to handle it, was well established. The Maya Train is simply an alternative way to reach a city that tourists discovered years ago.

‘We’re on the Tren Maya!’

In the morning, I found that my train had not been canceled, but the station for which I had a ticket, Tixkokob, was closed. I got off instead one stop earlier at Izamal, known for its ocher streets and the giant Franciscan convent of San Antonio de Padua, built atop the ruins of a pyramid.

During the 90-minute ride, I heard widespread enthusiasm among fellow travelers who expressed a willingness to give the train time to work out the kinks. “We’re an experiment,” said Oliva Escobedo Ochoa, 64, who was vacationing from her home in central Mexico.

Leticia Iliassich, 57, who is Mexican, was traveling with her Croatian husband along with relatives from Mexico and Croatia. They had initially been scheduled on an earlier train to Mérida that had been canceled. “We knew that it was a new project,” she said. “We don’t mind.”

The group had already sent a video to friends declaring, “We’re on the Tren Maya!”

At the Izamal station I hitched a 15-minute ride into the town center with a man who had asked me to take his photo alongside the train and his father. From there I negotiated a taxi to Hacienda San Lorenzo Aké, a working hacienda that still turns the fiber from an agave plant called henequén into coarse rope. Global demand for henequén, known as Yucatán’s “green gold,” brought fantastic wealth to the region in the mid-19th century, speckling the peninsula with more than 1,000 haciendas. ( Many are now sumptuous hotels.)

Where geometry, nature and the divine merge

It was during my third day that I found myself stuck in Maxcanú, after a 90-minute train ride from Izamal. The stationmaster, an army captain, offered me a ride to Uxmal, just as he had to the stranded tourists before me.

Eying Uxmal’s 4 p.m. final ticket sale, I accepted.

My situation made it clear just how distant the Maya Train’s promises are for tourists seeking to explore more of Yucatán. In time, that will change, said Ms. Fridman, the tourism secretary. “The idea is to have more hotels along the train line,” she said. “That will happen little by little.”

But Uxmal , among the most stunning of the Maya sites, made up for the inconvenience. Uxmal’s grand buildings are faced with intricate decorative masks as well as friezes in which geometry, nature and the divine merge. New plaques at each structure offer detailed information in English and Spanish, part of the government’s investment in improving displays at Maya sites for the train project.

Most tourists either take day trips by car or bus to Uxmal from Mérida or stay at one of three nearby hotels. As I finished dinner at my hotel, the dining room began to fill up: 47 Polish tourists had arrived.

Panama hats and a cramped van

My plan for the day was to go by taxi to Bécal, a town where Panama hats are woven in limestone caves to keep the fibers soft, and then pick up the afternoon train in nearby Calkiní for the port city of Campeche.

But I spent so much time watching the hat-making demonstration and then fitting my new hat and buying gifts that we set off with little time to reach the station. To my chagrin, I missed the train, the last one of the day.

On Calkiní’s central square, I found a van that was leaving for Campeche. Cost: 65 pesos. Time: about 1 hour and 20 minutes, similar to what I would have spent on the train. Of course, I was trapped in a cramped seat and had to listen to the driver’s choice of sentimental ballads, but I was dropped off in downtown Campeche, close to my hotel.

The next day, I toured the Museum of Maya Archaeology , an expertly curated collection that included haunting jade funeral masks, glyphs and delicate ceramic figures.

José Madrigal, 45, an engineer from Fremont, Calif., was trying to make Maya pottery interesting for his twin sons. The boys had just turned 5 and their birthday present had been a ride on the Maya Train. “They love trains,” Mr. Madrigal said. Then the family moved on, keeping up a brisk clip through the museum. They had another train to catch.

Should you take the train?

Yes, if you are traveling between larger stations. The train also offers a way to get to Palenque, which is harder to reach and has roads with security concerns. Travelers can stow bicycles on board.

To see train times, check the destinations on the website . You cannot buy tickets online more than a week in advance. But when you finally board, the ride is smooth — and the coffee is excellent.

Paws on the Platform helps decision-makers understand the challenges people with sight loss face

The mayor and mayoress of Maidstone are set to take a blindfolded train journey to experience the challenges people with sight loss face.

They will be guided through buying a ticket, finding the right platform, boarding the train, locating a seat and disembarking.

Paws on the Platform is a project by the charity Guide Dogs, aimed at highlighting the barriers that people with sight loss have to overcome.

Kent county councillor Shellina Prendergast and Southeastern general manager Kevin Warn will also take part in the experience.

They will travel between Maidstone East and Hollingbourne stations on 19 April.

On arrival at Hollingbourne Station they will have afternoon tea at the new Signal Box Café, which is part of the old ticket office refurbishment.

The journey will be supported by Guide Dogs staff, volunteers and local guide dog owners

Diane Proctor, a member of the Guide Dogs fundraisers in Maidstone, said it is "a unique opportunity for key decision makers" to understand the difficulties and improve experiences.

She said: "Travelling by train can be incredibly challenging for people with sight loss as it can be difficult to know which platform to board the train and when it has reached the right station."

Therese Hammond, project officer at Kent Community Rail Partnership, said "with Southeastern’s support we will endeavour to improve future train travel experiences".

Tina Owusu, head of inclusive customer experience at Southeastern, said travelling by train can be "daunting to some customers, particularly those with accessibility requirements".

She said Southeastern had upgraded its app and journey planner and added: "We're also offering braille stickers to visually impaired customers to help them identify their Southeastern Key smartcard."

Richard Keenan-Heard

Richard Keenan-Heard

There has to be something said for taking a high-speed Pendolino train , I love the way it takes a curve on the track, gently swaying into the corner with effortless ease and style.

We booked tickets in advance for the 5.47 pm train from Liverpool Lime Street to London and used our Two Together Railcard, saving just over £16 on this one journey alone—if you don’t have a Railcard, I’d highly recommend checking out the savings you could enjoy.

Liverpool Lime Street has a large number of shops and food outlets if you need to grab something before boarding the train. We grabbed some nibbles and a couple of drinks from the M&S just to see us through the journey.

Once we boarded the train, stowed our bags, and settled into our seats (with free Wi-Fi!) the train was just starting to pull out of the station. One of the best spots on the train at this point is on the right-hand side of the carriage as you’ll get a view across the River Mersey as you cross between Widnes and Runcorn.

With the lighter summer evenings, you can still window gaze at your leisure and take in some of the countryside views as you fly by at 125 mph. There has to be something said for letting the train driver do all the work, while you sit back in comfort and relax, certainly beats driving—that much I can tell you.

On the approach into London Euston, we tidy away our belongings and grab our bags before heading out through the main concourse and into the bright city lights of London. Next stop, the West End!
