STARCRAFT POP TOP

Journey pop top, all-terrain pop top, all terrain, basestation, jrv campervan, optimum campervan, all terrain campervan, conquest motorhome, optimum motorhome, a guide to your jayco rv: how to use the 12v electric awning.

The easiest part of setting up camp is extending your electric awning.

You can get shelter and keep your equipment dry at just the click of a button.

In the following video, Chris will be demonstrating how to use the electric awning fitted in a Silverline Outback caravan.

These instructions are applicable to the Silverline range .

Step-by-step guide to using the electric awning:

To extend your awning, you must first ensure that it’s switched on.

Once it’s on, you can press the extend button located on your control panel.

The awning will automatically extend from the van.

It will also automatically calibrate itself.

To retract the awning, press the retract button located on your control panel.

The awning will retract automatically.

Extending and retracting your awning is really that easy.

Jayco Journey

Jayco's re-named and up-market journey is arguably australia's best value pop-top.

Now, are you paying attention?

Jayco's premium caravan is no longer called the Sterling. It's now re-styled, re-equipped and re-named the Silverline .

The Discovery range of pop-tops, which previously sat between the Sterling and Expanda pop-tops, is history.

In place of the Discovery, there's the new 12-model Journey range of 16ft and 17ft pop-tops, 10 with combined shower/toilets and two with full shower-toilet ensuites across their rear.

These latter two, the 17ft 17.55-8 we review here and the 17.55-9, which is identical except for its twin front single beds instead of a single queen bed, are now Jayco's premium pop-tops.

If you want a smaller and/or cheaper pop-top, there are two further Jayco choices: one is the smooth-wall Expanda, available in sizes from 14ft-17ft, where the beds drop down from the ends, or the entry-level Starcraft with its ribbed aluminium walls available in sizes from 13ft-17ft.

Jayco's re-naming and re-positioning upwards of both models is bound to cause a little confusion in the used van market, but not if you're shopping for a premium specification new pop-top.

Quite simply at its price (ex-Victoria) of around $45,000, the 17ft Journey Outback 17.55 has little if any real competition.

While the concept is the same as the now-superseded Discovery – an aluminium wall-framed, but smooth fibreglass-clad full pop-top with fixed ends, there's a world of difference in the detail.

For a start, the Journey's exterior styling is much sharper and less rounded than was the Discovery's, from its new nose to its more abrupt Euro-look tail panel, with the actual pop-top roof now extending all the way to the very end of the roofline.

The black-framed, double-glazed windows are also larger and re-shaped, while on Outback-specced Journeys, the lower, stone-prone side panels are protected by black propeller-plate, whereas it was silver on the Discovery OBs.

However it's inside that you'll find the big changes.

In many ways, the interior look and feel of the Journey is similar to that of the previous Sterling. Jayco's stylish, flush-fit and light-toned timber CNC-cut cabinetry with new chrome handles, off-white benchtops and the light mock timber floor, gives the Journey a light, airy ambiance.

Unzipping the fly-mesh protected 'windows' in the pop-top doubles the effective 'window' area and the light just floods in, particularly into the full-width rear ensuite where the pop-top extends to the outer wall. This gives you the delightful feeling of showering outdoors, yet in total privacy.

The layout is pretty standard for a van of this size: front north-south island queen-size lift-up double bed, with good storage beneath, flanked by half-robes, two overheads cupboards and two huge, double-glazed, hopper-style picture windows.

In the centre there's an L-shaped three-seater dinette on the off-side, with a good-sized galley kitchen with reasonable, rather than exceptional, storage room opposite.

The cupboard to the right of the Dometic three gas and single electric burner cooktop and gas grill looks as though it should be a slide out pantry, but only houses shelves. Prep space is limited but adequate.

There's no oven (I personally don't see the need for them in caravans these days when you can bake cakes in a Weber Baby-Q), but there's a Sphere microwave at a sensible height above the Dometic 150 litre three-way fridge/freezer on the opposite wall.

The full-width ensuite is immediately to the right of the rear entry door, but the long curtain that shields the ablution area from the rest of the van is a cheap touch, as it blows out when the pop-top rear window is open. Even a concertina door would be better, but a sliding door would be best.

Otherwise the ensuite is workable, with a large vanity mirror above the half basin and flick mixer tap. There's a Thetford swivel cassette toilet and a good-sized, square ABS shower.

This is all pretty good for $45,000, but it's underneath where the 17.55 OB makes its best business case.

Jayco's new independent trailing arm tandem JTECH suspension , which it developed in-house with cooperation from Australian spring and shock absorber specialists Pedders, is standard on all Outback-spec Jaycos, from the smallest Swift Camper Trailer; it's also original equipment on all Silverline models.

Jayco's challenge when it first considered moving to independent suspension was how to make it work in a 'Jayco' sort of way across its wide range of caravans and pop-tops. It also had to fit the existing wheel boxes, whether on a single or tandem axle van, as any change here would have the expensive knock-on affect on the CNC-cut furniture, which in turn would impact on layouts, fridge sizes and venting.

Apart from offering greater ground clearance, thanks to the elimination of the low-slung beam axle between the wheels, JTECH allows Jayco pop-tops like the Journey to go further and travel easier off the beaten track. Thanks to its 40mm diameter foam cell heavy-duty shockers, JTECH also means a softer ride for the caravan and its contents on corrugations.

It all looks beautiful in its red and black livery if you're prepared to crawl underneath – and perhaps for the first time on a Jayco, this is a worthwhile experience! There you'll also find that most wires and pipes are either well protected, or tucked up out of the way of wayward stones, with the exception of some wires we found dangling in the left hand rear.

Outside, there's not much storage space, except inside the generously-sized front boot with its partitioned compartment with the twin gas bottles. It would be good to see some sort of auxiliary storage solution on the otherwise naked (save for a single jerry can holder) A-frame. The Journey OB's ball weight of 154kg unladen would seem to allow some room for this.

My other two gripes are minor, but need attention.

The front left roof-latch for the pop-top cannot be released without either lifting the awning by about 30mm, or else letting it swing out a little. And vice-versa when re-clipping.

What is really annoying about this is I have to do the same thing on my 2008 model Jayco Expanda and I believe people were also doing this with Jayco pop-tops 10 years ago. Moving the awning 20mm to the rear and the front latch 20mm to the left would solve it!

The other one is that the pop-top's wall-mounted awning light is completely obscured when you open the door. And surely you're going to have the door open, even if the flyscreen section is closed, when you're seated outside.

In part compensation, the inside of the Carefree roller awning is fitted with a row of tiny LEDs – looks a bit too much like Christmas lights for my liking! Again, a really simply solution is to just relocate the outside light to the centre of the pop-top body.

But to be fair, these are small grumps for what otherwise is a well-thought out pop-top, made all the better with its new decor, rear full ensuite and above all, its JTECH independent suspension.

The new Jayco Journey 17.55 is a whole lot of pop-top for modest money, with a good, workable layout, a bright, cheery interior and all wanted features in an easy-to-tow, 2.5-tonne package.

Tick the Outback option box and Jayco's new JTECH independent suspension truly makes this a pop-top for all roads and all reasons. It will take many adventurous travelers comfortably well off the bitumen, where it will serve as an excellent base station for even an extended touring holiday.

WE LIKED:  >> Price and standard equipment >> Layout including rear ensuite >> New independent suspension

NOT SO MUCH: >> A-frame finish poor, with sharp dags of galvanizing >> Pop-top heavy to raise at front end >> Location of exterior light and front pop-top latch

Jayco Swan Fiamma Awning Installation [Step-By-Step With Pictures]

Jayco Swan Fiamma Awning Installation [Step-By-Step With Pictures]

Disclosure: When you click on links to various merchants on this site and make a purchase, this can result in this site earning a commission. Affiliate programs and affiliations include, but are not limited to, the eBay Partner Network

Here I’ll show you step-by-step how I installed a Fiamma 45s awning on our Jayco Swan camper trailer.

Replacing the bag awning is one of the 35 Most Popular Jayco Camper Trailer Modifications …

…and it’s a surprisingly easy DIY job to do

(buying online and spending a couple of hours to install it saved around $500)

Let’s get started:

1. Buy a Fiamma awning from eBay

If you’ve already got one, skip this bit and go to Step 2.

But if you haven’t?

I followed everyone’s advice and bought mine from RV Parts Express via eBay:

Fiamma F45 The Most Popular Awning for Jayco Swan Camper Trailer

I’m very happy with it!

[ Here’s its eBay link … the seller I bought it from has 99.8% positive feedback]

NOTE : Everyone seems to recommend the 3.5 m length for a Swan, Flamingo or Penguin… for other models we’ve put together an article

Read : What Size Fiamma Awning for My Jayco Camper Trailer?

2. Make sure you have everything you need to do your Fiamma awning installation

The Fiamma F45s comes with everything you need to install it…

Fiamma F45s Awning Installation - Parts Included

…however there’s a few extra things that I’d recommend you get before you start.

My shopping list was:

  • M6 30mm cup head bolts . The bracket bolts that came with the awning were 50 mm long and would’ve needed to be cut down… but 6 of these came to a grand total of $1.86 from Bunnings
  • Rain guard . After installation, there’ll be a small gap between the awning and the roof of the caravan… perfect for the rain to trickle down. This is shaped to perfectly fill this gap.

Fiamma Rain Guard - Fills the Gap When Install on Jayco Camper Trailer

Rain guard : Best place I could find to buy it was here from Fineline Fabrications from their eBay store

3. Tools used for my Fiamma awning installation

This is everything I needed:

  • Tape measure
  • Cordless drill (5mm and 6.5mm bits)
  • Socket set (8mm and 10mm)
  • Philips head screwdriver

I also used a pencil and a bit of black tape…

4. Mark the distance between the awning brackets

The back of the awning comes marked with the how the brackets need to be spaced:

Distance Between Mounting Brackets Installing Fiamma Awning on Jayco Swan

So I laid my tape measure on top of the awning and marked it with a few tabs of black tape.

Then, I held the measuring tape up against the roof…

Marking On Room of Jayco Swan Location of Fiamma Awning Mounting Brackets

…and marked with a pencil where the brackets needed to be located.

5. Measure, mark and drill the holes at the correct height for the awning brackets

Here’s the part that requires close attention:

If the holes are too low then the roof clips that are on the outside will be in the way… … too high and the curtain rail that’s on the inside will be in the way.

It’s pretty simple to work out where the holes need to go though:

  • The distance from the bottom of the bracket to the holes is 100mm
  • Add this 100mm to the top of the roof clips (45mm in my case)
  • Check this total measurement inside to see where the holes will come out

Measuring the height of the holes for a fiamma awning installation on our Jayco Swan

In my case this was a total of 145 mm and was just a smidge below the line of screws that held the canvas to the roof…

Holes Drilled On Jayco Swan for Fiamma Awning Mounting Bracket

….so it seemed the best option for me was to go up a few millimetres and actually go through the canvas to add to the screws that hold the canvas to the roof

[ironically the same height as the existing screw holes from the factory installed bag awning… would’ve been handy if they were in the right position!]

6. Bolt the mounting brackets onto the roof

The rubber washers go between the bracket and the wall…

Fiamma Awning Mounting Bracket on Jayco Swan

…and the mounting bracket backingplate goes inside:

Bolts for Fiamma Mounting Bracket Reinforcing Canvas Supports in Jayco Swan

Different Jayco camper trailers have different set-ups inside the roof. Here you can see I’ve matched the screws that hold up the canvas.

Fiamma Awning Mounting Bracket Backing Plate Inside Jayco Swan

[I took a photo with one of the original bolts to show the difference]

HINT : If you’ve already got your Fiamma rain guard and you’re going to install it today then don’t tighten the bolts just yet

Here’s how it’s looking so far:

Fiamma Awning Mounting Bracket Locations on Jayco Swan Camper Trailer

7. Lift the awning onto the mounting brackets

So you can visualise how it fits together:

How the Fiamma Awning Fits on Mounting Bracket

So the next step in the Fiamma awning installation is to just lift it on, and the lip of the bracket sits in the extruded groove.

This part is a 2 person lift…

…Captain America approves!

8. Open the awning slightly and bolt the awning to the brackets from underneath

Using the winder handle, open the awning slightly.

Here you’ll see that the bottom of the bracket has 2 holes:

Fiamma Awning Mounting Bracket - Bottom Holes

The installation only calls for 1 bolt per mounting bracket… so you get to choose which hole is most convenient

(in this example I used the hole on the left)

Fiamma Awning Mounting Bracket - Bolted Together

Drill, 5 mm drillbit, Phillips head screwdriver, 8 mm socket… done.

9. Seal between the awning and the roof

When you install a Fiamma awning on your Jayco camper trailer, the brackets will create a small gap between the back of the awning and the roof

[perfect for letting rain drip down in the gap.]

Some people run a bead of silicon to close the gap, but my preference was to go for the stuff that’s specifically designed for this:

Fiamma Rain Guard - Awning Installation for Jayco Camper Trailer

After shopping around it looked like the best place to buy this from was here from Fineline Fabrications via their eBay store

[you can wedge it in after installation, but it’s a easier if you loosen the bolts slightly]

10. [OPTIONAL] Install wall mounting brackets

The Fiamma F45s awning comes with wall mounting brackets.

Fiamma Wall Mounting Bracket Installation

These allow you to attach the legs to the side of your vehicle instead of having them go straight down to the ground:

Jayco Swan Outback with a Fiamma 45 s Awning

This is a stock photo because I opted not to install these on our Swan

[I figured these would be great on a caravan or whizbang, but on a Jayco camper trailer I didn’t want to risk of sideways force bending the lifter arms]

Maybe I’m being overly cautious because it looks like it’s a mixed bag of how people approach this:

Using Fiamma Awning Wall Mounting Brackets - Jayco Camper Trailer

11. Make sure you have a way to even out the tension on the other side

Now that you have a fully installed Fiamma F45s awning on your Jayco camper trailer (yay!) when it’s up it can put sideways force on your roof.

Warning About Using Fiamma and Airconditioner on Jayco Camper Trailer Without Guy Ropes

  • Put a bending force on the lifting arms
  • Stop the door frame from being in alignment

One option is to replace the lifting arm bolts on the other side with M6 Eye Bolts (from Bunnings) to create a spot to connect guy ropes…

M6 Eye Bolt on Jayco Camper Trailer

…but another option is a kitchen awning privacy sunscreen:

Jayco Camper Trailer Kitchen Privacy Sunscreen

[ get them here from eBay … perfect for keeping the sun off the fridge in summer]

Summary: Jayco Swan camper trailer Fiamma F45s installation

Buying online and doing a DIY installation isn’t hard and saves a few hundred dollars.

Am I glad I swapped out our bag awning for a Fiamma?

Absolutely. I can see why it’s pretty high on the list of the 35 Most Popular Jayco Camper Trailer Modifications .

(I did a lot of research for our article The Best Roll Out Awning for Jayco Camper Trailers [3 Options] , and it led me to this one).

If you want to get one to do it yourself, then I’d recommend RV Parts Express via eBay .

Thanks Nev!

Tony

Thanks for these detailed instructions. I purchased a Fiamma F45s for my 2015 Dove Outback today and no doubt you have saved me time and worry before the install. Much appreciated!

Ian

Hi there – thanks for all the incredibly helpful articles on your site, much appreciated. I am considering replacing our bag awning with the Fiamma – for ease of setup. However, we have full annexe walls that connect to the bag awning so we would lose this functionality, or have to buy an expensive privacy room for the Fiamma. We don’t use the annexe often, only when staying for long durations with the kids, where it can be a real asset. So my question is – once the brackets are installed for the Fiamma, can these remain in place whilst the bag awning is switched back onto the van (Jayco Swan Touring) on those occasions we might want to revert to that awning and the annexe ? Or would everything have to be removed to reinstall the bag awning, which makes it a tedious option…? Thanks !

Hi Ian, no you wouldn’t need to remove the brackets… some people have both, exactly like you’re thinking

Wayne

Awesome work !!! Purchased a Fiamma online on Tuesday and it arrived on Wednesday!! Now that the weather has stop this stupidity I will be giving it a crack tomorrow with the help of your instructions! Can’t wait for adventures ahead with this new awning Cheers

Scott

Great instructions and easy to understand, well done ! Gave it a crack in the weekend, took about 4 hours all up but we wanted to make sure we measured twice, drilled once.

Do you have any step by step instructions for the anti flap kits ? The booklet that came with it is a bit vague, especially where and how you connect it to the Awning / Camper side. I cant seem to find anything on youtube. The kit came with various parts and not sure the right ones to use 🙁

Hi Scott, thanks mate! No, but I’ll add that to the list to put some together 🙂

nICK

Hey Dude. I ordered an F45 for the Hawk, went with the 350. Just stopping in here as a refresher on how to install. Hopefully it arrives the week and I can get it installed in time for Easter camping. Got it at RV Parts Express with a 10% discount code too, Happy camping.

carla

i just had my dove repaired (rear cables for winder). I mentioned the fiamma awning but he said it’s too heavy. My van is a 2004 so i’m guessing maybe because it’s older

Hi Carla, my guess would be that it’s the weight in conjunction with other accessories that’s on the roof (it’s about total lifting capacity)

MOSCOW TOPOGRAPHY

Moscow Rings Map

Moscow has developed in circles around the original historical center. Today, Muscovites divide their city into four road rings. The first one, Bulvarnoye Koltso (Boulevard Ring), contains the very center of the city, the Kremlin, as well as the Red Square and some other tourist attractions. The second ring road draws a circle with a diameter of around five kilometers around the Kremlin and covers what is considered the city center. The area is referred to as  Sadovoye koltso , the Garden Ring. The Third Transport Ring ( TTK ) is a high-speed freeway. The fourth ring is enclosed by the Moscow Automobile Ring Road ( MKAD ). The MKAD is the official city boundary, although there are huge areas outside the ring that are also officially part of the city area.

Tickets cost about 55 rubles (€0.55) for one journey. Tickets are valid at the Metro, bus, trolleybus, tram and monorail. It is better to purchase multi-ride pass, using it is more profitable.

Most Beautiful Metro Stations in Moscow

Most Beautiful Metro Stations in Moscow

Visiting Moscow? Get yourself a metro card and explore Moscow’s beautiful metro stations. Moscow’s world-famous metro system is efficient and a great way to get from A to B. But there is more to it; Soviet mosaic decorations, exuberant halls with chandeliers, colourful paintings and immense statues. Moscow’s metro is an attraction itself, so take half a day and dive into Moscow’s underground!

The best thing to do is to get on the brown circle (number 5) line since the most beautiful metro stations are situated on this line. The only exception is the metro stop Mayakovskaya one the green line (number 2). My suggestion is to get a map, mark these metro stops on there and hop on the metro. It helps to get an English > Russian map to better understand the names of the stops. At some of the metro stops, the microphone voice speaks Russian and English so it’s not difficult at all.

Another thing we found out, is that it’s worth taking the escalator and explore the other corridors to discover how beautiful the full station is.

Quick hotel suggestion for Moscow is the amazing Brick Design Hotel .

These are my favourite metro stations in Moscow, in order of my personal preference:

1. Mayakovskaya Station

The metro station of Mayakovskaya looks like a ballroom! Wide arches, huge domes with lamps and mosaic works make your exit of the metro overwhelming. Look up and you will see the many colourful mosaics with typical Soviet pictures. Mayakovskaya is my personal favourite and is the only stop not on the brown line but on the green line.

jayco journey awning walls

2. Komsomolskaya Station

Komsomolskaya metro station is famous for its yellow ceiling. An average museum is nothing compared to this stop. Splendour all over the place, black and gold, mosaic – again – and enormous chandeliers that made my lamp at home look like a toy.

jayco journey awning walls

3. Novoslobodskaya Station

The pillars in the main hall of Novoslobodskaya metro station have the most colourful stained glass decorations. The golden arches and the golden mosaic with a naked lady holding a baby in front of the Soviet hammer and sickle, make the drama complete.

jayco journey awning walls

4. Prospect Mira Station

The beautiful chandeliers and the lines in the ceiling, make Prospekt Mira an architectural masterpiece.

jayco journey awning walls

5. Belorusskaya Station

Prestigious arches, octagonal shapes of Socialistic Soviet Republic mosaics. The eyecatcher of Belorusskaya metro station, however, is the enormous statue of three men with long coats, holding guns and a flag.

jayco journey awning walls

6. Kiyevskaya Station

The metro station of Kiyevskaya is a bit more romantic than Belorusskaya and Prospect Mira. Beautiful paintings with classical decorations.

jayco journey awning walls

7. Taganskaya Station

At the main hall Taganskaya metro station you will find triangle light blue and white decorations that are an ode to various Russians that – I assume – are important for Russian history and victory. There is no need to explore others halls of Taganskaya, this is it.

8. Paveletskaya Station

Another and most definitely the less beautiful outrageous huge golden mosaic covers one of the walls of Paveletskaya. I would recommend taking the escalator to the exit upstairs to admire the turquoise dome and a painting of the St Basil’s Cathedral in a wooden frame.

It’s absolutely beautiful! Moscow is a great city trip destination and really surprised me in many ways.

My partner and I did a self guided Moscow Metro tour when we were there 2 years ago. So many breathtaking platforms…I highly recommend it! Most of my favorites were along the Brown 5 line, as well. I also loved Mayakovskaya, Arbatskaya, Aleksandrovski Sad and Ploshchad Revolyutsii. We’re heading back in a few weeks and plan to do Metro Tour-Part 2. We hope to see the #5 stations we missed before, as well as explore some of the Dark Blue #3 (Park Pobedy and Slavyansky Bul’var, for sure), Yellow #8 and Olive #10 platforms.

That’s exciting Julia! Curious to see your Metro Tour-Part 2 experience and the stations you discovered.
