Catalina Island in the Dominican Republic: Breathtaking Day Tour

Planning to book a day trip or tour to Catalina Island in the Dominican Republic from your resort? This Isla Catalina tour is a Caribbean dream.

Where is Catalina Island in the Dominican Republic? Not to be confused with Catalina Island in California. This Isla Catalina is a small historic island off the southeast coast of the Dominican Republic.

Catalina Island is a popular tourist destination in the Dominican Republic.

At the present time, I call it “the most beautiful island in the Caribbean.” It’s a perfect day tour if you’re staying in Punta Cana or Bayahibe. The private beach there is owned by Costa Cruises.

The water is Caribbean blue, the sand is white, and it’s a great escape to another piece of paradise that the Dominican Republic offers. If you love to snorkel or dive, there is plenty of beauty to be found under the sea here.

We took a tour with Scuba Caribe during our week’s vacation at the Hilton La Romana . It was one of our best days there. Absolutely, unforgettable.

My husband is still raving about the snorkeling there. I can’t stop thinking about the water… the prettiest crystal blue water I’ve ever seen. Catalina Island definitely won a special place in our hearts.

You will want to arrange an excursion with your hotel or by booking with a tour agency. The best way to get to Catalina Island in the Dominican Republic is by boat.

The climate is tropical with a dry season that runs from January through June and a hot humid season from July through December.

Booking an Isla Catalina tour

Scuba caribe.

We booked our tour via Scuba Caribe ( not sponsored or affiliated ). There are other tour agencies out there that do offer their own tours to the island. You may want to speak to the tour specialist at your hotel.

The Catalina Island Snorkeling tour we booked included: a boat ride to and from the island, snorkeling the coral reef, buffet lunch, snacks, and open bar.

Looking to scuba dive and enjoy Catalina Island in the Dominican Republic? Scuba Caribe also offers a similar tour with two dive sites . You’ll go underwater to explore the Catalina Wall and the Aquarium Reef.

From start to finish, Scuba Caribe did a wonderful job. They focused on safety, yet made sure we had a fantastic time.

During our 1st spot at the coral reef, they made sure everyone got a chance to snorkel. Even those that had never snorkel got the chance.

The guides were so patient and held on to these non-swimmers with lifesavers. Of course, we were all wearing safety floats around our waists.

sea urchins, starfish and coral

That coral reef was one of the most beautiful reefs I’ve been to yet. There were schools of tropical fish and colorful coral. I really had no idea that the Dominican Republic had such amazing snorkeling.

Isla Catalina tours are available year-round.

starfish sitting at the bottom of the ocean

How long is the tour to Catalina Island?

It’s a full-day tour that starts at 8 am from Bayahibe. You’ll be back at your hotel for dinner by 5 pm.

Is the snorkel gear included?

Yes. Any tour operator you use should provide snorkel equipment. However, if you have your own that you are used to using, bring it with you.

Contact Scuba Caribe to book an Isla Catalina tour out of Bayahibe or Punta Cana.

What to do in Catalina Island

  • Snorkel or dive
  • Swim and relax on the beach
  • Walk around

There isn’t a ton to do in Isla Catalina besides enjoying this lovely piece of paradise. Beach time and relaxation may be the exact reason why you’re on vacation in the Dominican Republic.

turquoise waters and white sand beach at catalina island

When you do finally arrive at Catalina Island in the Dominican Republic, you will be awestruck by its beauty. I sure was! Once you are done gawking, make sure you get the best beach seats on the beach.

As soon as the tour operator finishes giving you a quick summary of guidelines, seek out the assistants on the beach waiting to help you with beach chairs.

Note they are only allowed to handle the beach chairs. Find a spot under a palm tree and sit closer to the shore for the best view. Don’t forget to tip the lovely gentlemen.

Take a nice swim in the warm and clear water of Playa Isla Catalina. The after is exactly how you see it in the photos.

Beach chairs are provided for on the beach and are part of your tour. When you arrive, have someone assist you in putting the beach chairs exactly where you’d like.

Relax on the beach with a drink in hand. Sink those toes in the soft white sand.

rocky cliffs by turquoise water at catalina islan

There is a designated area specifically for snorkeling by the cliff walls. When your snorkel guide is ready to snorkel or dive out by the rocky cliffs, head on out. Don’t miss it if you love to snorkel. I stayed behind because I really wanted to enjoy the beach and had snorkeled at the 1st spot.

orange starfish held against caribbean blue ocean

Hubby snorkeled almost our entire time and was in heaven. He saw stingrays, sea urchins, starfish, and all sorts of fish. After this tour, he was inspired to finally get his Scuba Certification with Scuba Caribe during our time in La Romana.

woman walking down the beach shoreline in isla catalina

You can also take a nice walk down the shoreline. There are small trails above the cliffs that you can hike and explore. Warning, make sure to wear mosquito spray.

Fun fact: The highest elevation on the island is only 60 feet above sea level.

While you’re at it, don’t forget to take pictures. Have fun! You’ll want proof of the time spent on this glorious island.

Restrooms are available on the island.

Lunch Buffet

The lunch provided by Scuba Caribe is a full spread of some traditional local foods. For me, it was a treat. Expect arroz con gandulez, macaroni salads, pork chops, bread, salads, and more.

Your tour operator will let you know which buffet station and open belongs to your group at the beginning of your tour.

The open bar is mostly soda and beer. On the boat ride back, they will serve rum.

There is a VIP tour that you can pay extra for a lobster lunch.

What to Be aware of…

A day trip to Catalina Island in the Dominican Republic is a wonderful tour to take and you won’t regret it. The only thing I’d be aware of on the island is the shop owners that approach you upon arrival. I noticed they will mostly approach the females.

The moment you sit, they come out to speak to you and give you a small gift (that I’m sure is made in China). Our was a wooden trinket on a black string. They try to charmingly persuade you to only shop at their gift shop.

I suggest politely declining, or they’ll get aggressive the moment you step into another gift shop that is not theirs. Speaking from experience.

This small part of the day shouldn’t deter you from booking this fun day trip to Catalina Island during your time in the Dominican Republic.

What to Pack for a Day Trip to Isla Catalina

kathy splashing around in the beautiful ocean of isla catalina

While I have a beach packing list you can always reference, there are some things that you do not need for this tour. Keep it simple. Here are the items you should bring with you…

  • Reef Safe Sunscreen The sun is powerful. I suggest not bringing anything less than 50 SPF.
  • Mosquito Spray If you plan to walk the short trails, bring mosquito spray.
  • Beach Towels They are not provided. You can bring your beach towels from the resort, make sure to bring them back with you.
  • Swimsuit So not exactly “packing it,” but don’t leave your hotel without it wearing it.
  • Cover-up Something dry to throw over yourself and cover up for the ride to and from the island.
  • Flip Flops / Sandals
  • Snorkel Gear Your tour guide more than likely will provide it. If you feel more comfortable with your snorkel, bring it.
  • Waterproof Camera Record the memories you’ll be making on vacation. The majority of the photos above were taken with the GoPro 10 . It was our first trip with the most recent GoPro release, and I have to say I’m impressed. The site’s photos are shrunk in size, but the originals are sharp and vibrant.

Highly recommend booking this Isla Catalina tour. I can’t think of a better way to make your vacation more memorable than a day trip to Catalina Island.

Book a Catalina Island tour today with your resort and make your vacation one of the best vacations ever.

If you have any questions, I’d be happy to answer any questions about this beautiful spot in the Dominican Republic.

Catalina Island was one of the most fun things we did. All you can Drink and Eat for the entire trip and dancing and a great entertainment staff. Plus the river was so pretty. We visited the church where Michael Jackson got married at.

Best Tour Ever. I book through Punta Cana Tours for a all day excursion to Catalina Island. My pickup at my hotel was on time and prompt. The bus was clean and the driver was professional as so was the guide for the day. The food we were served was awesome, the drinks flowed freely and there were plenty of activities to do.

Marcus (verified purchase) – June 23, 2022

We took an all day excursion to both locations. The bus ride was long and not in very good condition. Catalina Island was nice but the beach was no more spectacular than Bavaro Beach right in front of our hotel. Altos de Chavon is amazing. I wished we had more time to enjoy and appreciate this unique facility.

Dean (verified purchase) – January 24, 2022

A great excursion: organized, friendly, and very enjoyable! The crew – Rubio and company – were informative, helpful, attentive, and friendly! Nice snorkeling, lunch, and just plain fun!

Isla Catalina – less-frequented island excursion to paradise

Islands are always worth an excursion, especially if they are home to beaches, turquoise water and shallow reefs. That is also why Isla Catalina is a popular destination in the Dominican Republic, as it offers unspoiled nature, beautiful views and easy access from Punta Cana or Santo Domingo. Unless its bigger neighbor Isla Saona, Catalina Island is not as crowded and therefore offers a more peaceful atmosphere. In the following post, I am showing you everything you need to know before your tour to Isla Catalina and am giving you tips on how to find the best excursion.

Private excursions to Catalina Island

Isla Catalina is part of the most exciting attractions in the area. To check out more amazing things to do in Punta Cana, continue reading here . If you are looking for some private tours to Catalina Island instead of group tours, you can check out this article . And if you prefer Isla Saona over Isla Catalina, you’ll find more information here . Are you interested in further Punta Cana tours? If so, check out our comprehensive Punta Cana Excursion Guide with the most exciting 40+ activities for your vacation.

Completely UPDATED: April 2023

Where is the Isla Catalina located?

Isla Catalina, or in English Catalina Island, is located on the south coast of the Dominican Republic, just 1 mile off the coast in La Romana, one of the biggest cities in the country. Driving distances from Punta Cana and Santo Domingo are around 1.5 hours. Access and starting point usually is the harbor of La Romana, which makes it a great excursion option from the entire south coast between Santo Domingo and Punta Cana , as it is reachable from both points as well as from Boca Chica, Juan Dolio and Bayahibe .

What types of Isla Catalina excursions are existing?

The standard excursion to catalina island from punta cana.

If you book one of the typical Catalina Island excursions from Punta Cana or from other areas in the Dominican Republic, either upfront online or in your hotel, you usually get picked up right in the lobby of your all-inclusive resort or guesthouse. The driving time from Punta Cana is around 1.5 hours, depending on where exactly you are located. If traveling from Santo Domingo to Isla Catalina, expect to drive around 1.5 hours as well. From Bayahibe it is just a short 30-minute hop to the harbor where your Isla Catalina tour is going to start.

When arriving in La Romana, you will board the catamaran which will bring you to Isla Catalina. Unlike the tour to Isla Saona , where you go one way with a speed boat and the other way with a catamaran, the tour to Catalina Island is a full catamaran excursion.

The sailing to Isla Catalina takes around an hour. Usually, you stop on a reef along the way to do some snorkeling ( check out this article here for more information about snorkeling in and around Punta Cana ). Once at Isla Catalina, you have plenty of time to enjoy the picturesque beach, turquoise water and stunning scenery.

Our excursion to the beautiful Isla Catalina, south of La Romana

Usually, all snorkeling excursions to Isla Catalina include a lunch buffet and open bar (soft drinks, water and rum, sometimes also beer). You are free to walk around, even there are not many trails except the beach itself. The island is pretty small compared to Isla Saona , it just measures less than 4 square kilometers. However, you might be so amazed by the beach scene that you do not want to walk that far. 😉

The following tours are some of the options you have when visiting Catalina Island from Punta Cana.

Catalina Island tour from other places in the Dominican Republic

If you’re not staying in Punta Cana and want to visit Isla Catalina, don’t worry, you still can enjoy this beautiful island in the Dominican Republic. Isla Catalina tours are also offered from Santo Domingo , Boca Chica, Juan Dolio, La Romana and Bayahibe . The itinerary is similar to the one described above for Punta Cana to Isla Catalina, just the transfer to La Romana might be a bit longer or shorter. Check out the following table for the right Catalina Island excursion depending on where you stay.

Combo Tour: from Bayahibe or Punta Cana to Catalina Island + Altos de Chavon/Rio Chavon

If you want to experience a bit more than just snorkeling and visiting Catalina Island as a day trip, you can combine your paradisical island trip with Altos de Chavon, the famous Mediterranean-style village in Casa de Campo close to La Romana, or Rio Chavon, a river bordered by abundant and tropical vegetation. Both sites are some unique attractions in the Dominican Republic and add some more diversity to your Catalina Island excursion.

While Altos de Chavon is more a cultural-based add-on, where you walk through the unique setting of this (artificial) village and enjoy breathtaking views of Rio Chavon from above, an Isla Catalina excursion combined with a river boat tour on River Chavon shows you two different sceneries: first the turquoise ocean and paradisical views, before you head on the river and enjoy the lush vegetation.

Altos de Chavon in Casa de Campo, Dominican Republic

The diving excursion to Catalina Island

If you are into scuba diving instead of a snorkeling excursion, then Isla Catalina is one of your best bets along the South Coast of the Dominican Republic, including the whole Punta Cana and Bayahibe region . With two dive sites, “The Wall” and “The Aquarium”, the island features a tropical reef and a marine eco-system with several tropical fish, among them sergeant mayor, damselfish squirrelfish and stingrays. Catalina Island is one of the most popular dive sites around Punta Cana and the Dominican Republic.

After diving, you head to Isla Catalina for lunch and drinks and to enjoy the Caribbean beaches of the island.

Our excursion to the beautiful Isla Catalina, south of La Romana

Due to the technical equipment, safety measures and smaller groups, diving excursions to Isla Catalina are in general more expensive than the regular tours.

Premium excursions to Catalina Island

If you don’t want to head on a regular tour because you prefer a more intimate vibe with smaller groups, better food, quality drinks and personalized service, you should book a premium Catalina Island snorkeling excursion. Punta Cana or La Romana can be your starting points.

The procedure of these premium tours is the same as described above for the standard excursion from Punta Cana , just everything is a bit better.

For those looking for a particularly private experience, VIP tours to Isla Catalina are offered as well. Those are either with a private catamaran or a private luxury yacht and guarantee a sublime experience in style and elegance. Especially due to the proximity to Casa de Campo, the home of the rich and famous, there are many outstanding boats available.

If you are interested in further information about private tours to Isla Catalina, check out this article .

My experiences at Isla Catalina

We have been to Isla Catalina a while ago and we had a great time. I particularly liked that you go both ways with the catamaran. This feeling of cruising slowly on a boat, hearing nice music, having a drink and enjoying the surrounding views is for me the epitome of a perfect Caribbean excursion.

The snorkeling stop on the way was ok, but not spectacular. At least it was better than Isla Saona so we could see a few colorful fishes and some tropical reefs. However, I would not recommend an excursion to Isla Catalina if you just go because of the snorkeling, you might be disappointed.  On the other side, you definitely should go on this tour for the mentioned catamaran cruise as well as the beautiful island. Once you arrive at Catalina Island, you will be able to enjoy a stunning scenery in the middle of the ocean, consisting of turquoise waters and a stunning beach with countless palm trees.

Our excursion to the beautiful Isla Catalina, south of La Romana

I also recommend you to walk a little bit along the beach. While it is not possible to walk around the whole island, it is worth exploring the surrounding, especially if you head a bit south to the beach where the cruise ships are usually anchoring. Of course, if you are there during a cruise ship visit it might be crowded but otherwise, you have some fantastic photo opportunities thanks to the colorful houses.

Our excursion to the beautiful Isla Catalina, south of La Romana

During your excursion to Isla Catalina, you also have drinks and lunch included. Both are nothing to write home about but are doing their job. Unless you book a premium or VIP excursion *, you’ll (usually) get cheap rum that even a Dominican doesn’t know and the lunch is a typical buffet with chicken, fish, salad, rice, fruits and so on.

After all, the excursion was a gorgeous day out in nature with plenty of sunshine, a great catamaran cruise experience and a beautiful island. It was way less crowded than Isla Saona which I definitely enjoyed. Everything worked out perfectly so that we had a lot of fun and kept some nice memories. The scenery is beautiful as well, even though it can’t compete 100% with the paradise of Isla Saona. Frequently asked questions

How can i book a tour to catalina island.

Excursions to Isla Catalina can be best booked by one of the various tour operators. I would recommend booking it online as you can check reviews before. It is probably even cheaper than booking it at your hotel. Another option would be to book a tour at the beach and the beach vendor might give you better prices as they don’t have to pay for marketing, offices, etc. (and they don’t have a license), but the quality is a hit and miss so I’d stick with the online offers.

If you want you can check out the options I outlined above when describing the various tour options.

Tours are usually offered with a start in La Romana, Bayahibe and Punta Cana so please take care choosing the right departure point when you book an excursion to Isla Catalina. Santo Domingo, Boca Chica and Juan Dolio departures are also possible.

How to get from Punta Cana to Catalina Island?

The easiest way of getting from Punta Cana to Catalina Island are the excursions described above. Especially as there are no Isla Catalina hotels, there are also no other means of transport than guided tours. Of course, you could ask a fisherman to bring you over, but it will be pretty bumpy and expensive as well.

What to do on Catalina Island?

Like many islands in the Caribbean, Isla Catalina is famous for its beach(es) and turquoise water. You will have a great time admiring the scenery, having a dip in the warm water and getting some tan. There is also some snorkeling along the beach and during the tour, plus the catamaran cruise to the island is an attraction itself. Besides this, you can get a massage from local people or explore the island on foot.

How is the beach on Catalina Island?

Isla Catalina has a wonderful beach, even it might be a tiny bit less attractive than the one on Isla Saona . However, in the end, it probably equals out as there are fewer people at Catalina Island and you will have a great beach time on both islands.

The sun is always shining in paradise, so it does at Isla Catalina. 🙂

Even the Dominican Republic has a dry and a rainy season , traveling is possible year-round – without a problem, which means you can also go on a Catalina Island excursion year-round. So even if there might be some showers the one or other day, you hardly have any day without sunshine, even in the rainy season.

How to get to Isla Catalina in the Dominican Republic?

Isla Catalina is located along the south coast of the Dominican Republic, hence it is easily reachable from Santo Domingo, Punta Cana and any point in between. For the best and easiest option in getting to Isla Catalina, check out the different recommendations given in the article.

Alternatives to Catalina Island

As already mentioned in the article, Isla Saona is the popular and more famous counterpart of Isla Catalina. The scenery there is even more paradisical. Picture-perfect beaches and photo opportunities are awaiting you there. However, you have to share it with more people than on Isla Catalina. You can find a full review of Isla Saona here .

Cayo Levantado is another island that is reachable from Punta Cana, but it is farther away and the crossing through the bay of Samaná might be a little bit rough, depending on the wind. Therefore I would not recommend going there just for the island, Isla Saona and Isla Catalina are more worth it. However, if you combine Cayo Levantado with a whale-watching excursion (from January to March) it is an amazing package and very recommendable.

How about you, have you been at Isla Catalina? Or do you have questions to your upcoming trip? Start the discussion and leave me a comment!

SHARING IS CARING! IF YOU ENJOYED THIS ARTICLE, PLEASE SHARE WITH YOUR FRIENDS – I WOULD APPRECIATE IT A LOT.

Catalina Island Tour, Dominican Republic by Colonial Tour and Travel

"If you dreamed of a Caribbean paradise, you'll find it right here on Catalina Island ." - Colonial Tour and Travel Catalina Island or Serena Key as the grower lines are called in their programs is a beautiful white sand island near the southeastern coast of the Dominican Republic. It is itself a protected Natural Park where, of course, there is no building. Unknown to many travel agents and tourists, the beach is completely protected from the wind, thanks to which, the sea is always in absolute calm. Colonial Tour and Travel has prepared a spectacular luxury tour called Catalina VIP. This Catalina Island can be considered an ideal model of fun in the tropics, a kind of living design to handle an area dedicated to tourism while preserving much of the authentic nature. This small island, however, is astounding with its small dimensions that do not reach 15 square kilometers, of which one kilometer of beach has been used for the management of tourists who seek exclusively the fun under the sun taking advantage of perfectly elaborated sands, water of optimum temperature, Sea for all water sports, all the colors of the tropical universe and alternative insulation for a sublime communication with the environment. Catalina Island has three beaches of importance (of the West, North and East), two of which have great potential for the sustainable development of tourism (East and West), although at present only Uses one (the one from the West). In addition to the beaches mentioned above, which occupy more than two-thirds of its coastline, the Catalina has very unique rocky coasts, which border its southern part, forming cliffs in some cases and cliffs in others. One of the best dive sites in the Dominican Republic, is the spectacular Muro. From the beach, a gentle slope leads to the impressive wall that descends to over 100 meters deep, with two impressive steps at 25 and 40 meters. The entire slope of the beach up to the wall is a veritable upholstery of coral and fauna, a platform of thousands of square meters less than 3 meters in depth, ideal for diving to lung. Possibly the best place in the Caribbean for this activity. Every inch of this background is covered with sponges and coral. The depth of this exceptional and unique terrace varies from 1.5 to 6 meters. Without doubt, it is a privileged place. Another point of diving is The Aquarium. The name says it all. There are amazing coral formations and fauna waiting for you. Raccoons on Catalina Island Catalina Island is the only place in the Dominican Republic where you can easily come face to face with raccoons and wild hares, subsisting in a habitat that you have already made yours. Considered exotic in this part of the planet. Although they are allowed to be photographed, they are kept at a safe distance from the tourist. They usually leave in the afternoon of the cambronales in search of food, after the visitors have left. His instincts of conservation is admirable. They have the ability to detect the landing of the cruisers and immediately all go to the unloading area.

Catalina island, casa de campo and the river chavon, 3 in 1: snorkel, beach and river in one day.....

catalina island tours dominican republic

This excursion is available for guests of the Punta Cana, Bayahibe, Dominicus and La Romana hotels and resorts. The Catalina, Casa de Campo & Chavon River is a full day excursion to Catalina Island and to the beautiful Chavon River . If you are looking for an excursion with beautiful coral reefs and without crowded beaches , then this is the excursion for you. During the excursion we will take you to one of the most beautiful coral reefs in the Dominican Republic and visit the uninhabited island of Catalina .The excursion combines the sea and the jungle, nature and culture, and poor and rich. This is a perfect tour for when you want a lot of variation and diversity in your outing.

All Highlights in One Day!

Early morning we'll head for Catalina Island where you can snorkel at the famous Catalina Wall. After reaching the beautiful Playa Grande you can relax or snorkel at the 'aquarium'. An extensive buffet lunch is served on the beach. We will peek at the rich along the coast of Casa de Campo. We will cruise through the breathtaking gorge of the Chavon River.

The Perfect Family Tour

This all-encompassing tour is ideal for children and offers great value as a family excursion (not a 'booze cruise'). SeavisTours again offers a fully jam-packed fun full day emphasizing ecology and the preservation of nature while creating memories of a lifetime.

arrow

Nature, the island and the 'expedition' feeling are important to us. Quality and personal care are guaranteed. All tours are led by a english-speaking and knowledgeable guide and the maximum number of participants is limited to 26 per group. This excursion is ideal for a complete nature experience in the Dominican Republic. In the morning we meet at our office right on the beach, from where we start our excursion. After a short 5-minute walk along the beach, we board our motor catamaran and the adventure begins . The trip starts in Bayahibe and after a 30 minute boat ride we will arrive at Catalina Island.

Catalina Island: Snorkel Paradise and Great Beach

catalina island tours dominican republic

The head to our first snorkeling stop “The Wall” takes about 30 minutes and if we are lucky we may see free-roaming dolphins. During the trip, our guide will tell you a little about the island of Catalina and its origin. As soon as our boat is attached, the snorkeling adventure can begin. Our guide is always in the water with you and accompanies inexperienced snorkelers. Here you can see a variety of different fish and corals .

Playa Grande...

catalina island tours dominican republic

Now we continue towards the “Playa Grande” of Catalina, we will dock here at the pier and you can find a spot in the shade or in the sun. After refreshing we head towards the Cliffs of Catalina in search of rays and starfish.

After this effort, enjoy a traditional Dominican buffet lunch with grilled chicken, pork chops and a selection of salads, potatoes, rice, pasta and fruits. Explore the beach, swim in the Caribbean Sea or browse the small artisan souvenir shops. For adventurers interested in nature, there is a short hike above the cliffs.

Peek at the rich ...

catalina island tours dominican republic

Returning to the mainland, we pass La Romana and, in season, will enter the La Romana Cruise Port , where huge cruise ships anchor. Leaving the port, we head on to Casa de Campo where the sights include 'marina life'. Sometimes it's nice to peek at the rich, and this is where they dock their extremely luxurious yachts for days or seasons at a time. We will show you the 'holiday cottages' of Madonna, Shakira and the late Michael Jackson. You may see Vin Diesel too....

Navigating the lower part of Chavon River

catalina island tours dominican republic

Just past Casa de Campo we go up the Rio Chavon . This is again a lushly tropical natural environment. The beautiful gorge has jungle vegetation and when lucky we see vultures circling high above. There will always be pelicans and frigate birds calling to each other. The gorge has been the film set of the blockbusters Jurassic Park and Apocalypse Now .

Switching to the River Boat to cruise the impressive Gorge

Rio Chavon Cruise

We then continue with the 'Jungle part' of the trip. We will cross the bridge of the river Chavon and board our traditional riverboat. We will float in a relaxed pace stream up through the gorge of the river. Nature is all around and everybody enjoys the panoramas and the jungle-like feeling. Drinks are served on the boat. After +- 40 minutes we'll reach the ranch, perfectly situated on the bank of the river surrounded by hills overgrown with jungle.

Tanama: 25 little wonders with big impacts

Butterfly Garden

The lunch is served and after the lunch you can join the guided tour through the butterfly gardens, the rainforest trail and the reptile house. You will learn about some amazing Wonders of Nature .... More about this part of the day can be read on the page Tanama Wonders of Nature Tour . The whole guided tour is included in the Nature Complete.

Meet the locals and pet them; make the perfect photos

catalina island tours dominican republic

After the guided tour you can relax on the beautiful ranch . The roof top terraces give a bird eye view of the river and the central pavilion, surrounded by cages with local animals, is a perfect place to soak up the jungle atmosphere....

On the way back some animation...

Central building Tanama

Around 16:00h (04:00pm) we head back to Bayahibe. On the way back it is time for some animation. Our staff will demonstrate the Bachata and the Merengue and if you want you can join them.... 40 minutes later we'll arrive back in the port of Bayahibe and the buses will be ready for the transfer back to your resort or to the cruise port.

Testimonial "We have now had 4 tours with Seavis and have enjoyed every one of them. The places, transport and food were all perfect but the icing on the cake are the guides. Robert was brilliant on both tours this year. We did the Nature Experience in challenging weather and Robert is someone that without hesitation I would trust my life with. Thanks again Seavis for making our already special holiday in the DR that bit more magical. We will always treasure the photos that your photographer took as well. Catalina Island, Dominican Republic

Enjoy the white sands and other attractions of this historic island during your stay in la romana, dominican republic..

Catalina Island, Dominican Republic

Visit Catalina Island , a point of passage towards the Underwater Museum of Naufragio del Capitán Kidd Shipwreck, but also the perfect place to enjoy wonderful and idyllic white-sand beaches .

It is a place to dock for cruises, where passengers take advantage to discover this renowned historical island of the Caribbean.

Isla Catalina, Dominican Republic

Famous for its coral reefs, diving lovers enjoy quite much observing the incredible underwater fauna and the wreck of the sank boat from Kidd Captain, located only 2 or 3 meters deep in the vicinity of the island. Being part of the Underwater Museums route of La Romana, the Naufragio del Capitán Kidd Shipwreck became famous due to its discovery by a tourist and a later documentary by National Geographic.

Apart from the shipwreck, reefs create an amazing coral wall causing countless wrecks in the area, being nowadays one of the most famous destinations for divers who visit the country.

During your visit to the island, apart from enjoying a beach day in the Caribbean style, it is typical to eat a buffet lunch in the restaurants of Casa de Campo , as well as shopping in some small shops or discovering typical dances sometimes performed.

It is a really nice place for fishing where Guatapaná, Jureles, Scombridaes and other kinds of warm waters fishes have been caught.

There are tours leaving from different places in the area of La Romana , like Casa de Campo , Playa Bayahibe or Playa Dominicus , among others.

Isla Catalina – A must visit Island from Punta Cana

  • Last updated on: 2022-08-07

Catalina Island tour Punta Cana

Isla Catalina or Catalina Island is an island that flies under the radar in the Dominican Republic. It is one of the most beautiful Caribbean islands in the country and also one of the least visited. We’ll tell you why it’s an ideal island getaway destination whether you want to relax on the beach or try your hand at scuba diving and snorkeling in the clear blue waters.

With so many excursions and tours to consider during your stay in Punta Cana, here’s what you can expect if you choose to visit Catalina Island as well as some things to do on your trip.

Where is Isla Catalina located and how do I get there?

Isla Catalina is part of La Romana Province on Hispaniola (the island shared by Haiti and DR). It’s one of two islands in El Este (Eastern) region. With a protected area larger than 7 miles long and 4 miles wide, Isla Catalina offers an idyllic Caribbean escape only 40 minutes from La Romana by fast boat.

Isla Catalina is located on the southeast corner of the Dominican Republic near the provinces of  La Altagracia  and  La Romana . It’s a popular location for snorkelers, its shallow waters and small size make it ideal for newbies who want some help getting comfortable in deep water.

Isla Catalina in the Dominican Republi

Getting there

Making a trip to Isla Catalina is not like visiting your run-of-the-mill resort destination. It’s more of a full-day excursion.

There are no flights to Isla Catalina. You must take a boat from La Romana. If you’re staying in Punta Cana , Cap Cana, or at a resort around Bávaro, you can also you can book the tour from a qualified operator that will take you to Catalina Island and back to your resort.

Catalina Island full-day tour from Punta Cana

The water on Isla Catalina is crystal clear

Most days it’s so blue that it looks like you can see straight to the bottom. When you’re snorkeling or diving, you feel like a mermaid. The water is so crystal clear that some people claim you can see down as far as 20 feet.

The seabed is filled with colorful fish and vibrant coral reefs. If you want to try scuba diving for the first time (or your 100th), there are plenty of dive shops on Isla Catalina where instructors will happily teach you how to use their equipment and explore the ocean depths.

Visting Isla Catalina does not need to cost a lot

You can visit Isla Catalina without burning a hole in your wallet.

The common tour to Catalina Island costs anywhere from $89 to $99 USD and it includes the following:

  • Snorkeling equipment
  • Snorkel at “the Wall” (incredible underwater rock formations where often Eagle Rays, morays, rays, and a lot of different kinds of fish can be seen)
  • Alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks
  • Buffet lunch style
  • Roundtrip transportation from and to your hotel

Isla Catalina is an incredibly popular destination for day trips from Punta Cana. It’s close enough to spend a day on but far enough away to get a bit of peace and quiet. If you want to visit, book the tour with us!

What to pack?

Wear a light bathing suit with a cover-up so you can change into something dry if necessary.

Recommended:

  • Biodegradable sunscreen
  • Sunglasses
  • Towels
  • Cash in the form of small denomination bills for tips and Pina Coladas.

Also consider always bringing your official IDs and personal documents required during the trip within reach.

What other tourist say about the trip to Catalina Island (reviews)

Beautiful beach for a day trip! Visited Catalina Island beach for a day trip and had an enjoyable time with family and friends. The beach is pristine with crystal clear waters, great for snorkeling, swimming and scuba diving, lots of coral reefs in the area. They have picnic tables and bathrooms, which is good because no one lives on the island. Take bug spray with you to avoid insect bites, there are mosquitoes and horse flies in the area. If you like fishing this is also a great spot to fish from a boat or beach.
Most do (Jul. 2021) Nice excursion for a private beach and snorkeling. Catamaran boat ride was fun. All day excursion from Punta Cana .
Excellent Find your way out here. There is a beach on the west side of the island that is absolutely gorgeous. I recommend this to anyone.

Fun Fact: Captain Kidd’s lost ship “The Quedagh Merchant” found

In 2007, while snorkeling off the coast of Catalina Island, a snorkeler found cannons and contacted the Dominican Republic’s National Office of Underwater Cultural Heritage (ONPCS), which in turn contacted Indiana University.

Indiana University concluded that the archaeological record matches very well with the historical record therefore the wreck was the long-lost “ Quedagh Merchan t” which belonged to William Kidd .

We invite you to read about it on Indiana University’s research website .

(The tour to Catalina Island does not include a visit to the wreck’s site)

Explore a series of caverns decorated with pre-Columbian paintings and a hilltop village designed to replicate a 16th-century Mediterranean village. The caves are truly wondrous and not just because of its hundreds of beautifully preserved native Taino Indian wall paintings, which are known as pictographs. While walking the cave’s winding paths, you will also see abundant geological wonders, which include eerily shaped, dramatically lighted stalactites and stalagmites. Be sure to look into the Water Mirror, a subterranean lake that reflects the unusual formations on the ceiling. Unlike the ancient cave system, the village Altos de Chavon only looks old. Local artisans built it in the 1980s as a cultural and artistic center, and its setting above the Chavon River is spectacular. Architectural highlights include a Grecian-style outdoor amphitheater and the stone St. Stanislaus Church. The village’s Archaeological Regional Museum contains thousands of real Pre-Columbian artifacts that lend insight into the indigenous people.

Discover the natural wonders that lie below the earth’s surface and watch master artisans hand-roll premium cigars. The Cave of Wonders is named for both its spectacular geological formations and the hundreds of native Taino Indian paintings that adorn the rock walls. The Tainos are the indigenous people that occupied this area long before Christopher Columbus arrived. Their cave paintings and engravings have been preserved in near-perfect condition, which presents a snapshot of life centuries ago. You will witness a different sort of creativity at the Tabacalera La Vega Fina factory, where artisans hand-roll cigars from a blend of aged tobaccos. It is a fascinating process to watch, as it takes years to master the art of constructing the cigar’s different layers for the ideal taste, aroma and mouthfeel. Made with tobacco leaves that have been aged at least three years, La Vega Fina cigars are medium-bodied cigars that appeal to a wide audience.

  • Adult from: € 91,62 EUR
  • Child from: € 73,11 EUR

Explore the replica 16th-century Mediterranean village Altos de Chavon and watch master artisans make premium Dominican cigars at a family-owned establishment founded in 1876. After a scenic tender ride from Catalina Island to La Romana, you will continue on to the village, which sits atop a plateau overlooking the Chavon River. The views from this elevated perch are outstanding. Altos de Chavon is just as captivating, as you will learn about the local culture by browsing the pre-Columbian artifacts in the Regional Museum of Archaeology and by visiting the St. Stanislaus Church, a beautiful stone structure made to look medieval. The 5,000-seat Grecian-style outdoor amphitheater is another exceptional highlight that makes the village appear older than it is. Cigars are synonym with the Dominican Republic and you will watch some of the finest being hand-rolled at the Tabacalera La Vega Fina factory. The cigars are known for their balanced character and rich flavor.

Duration 3 hrs

Relax on a sleek comfortable catamaran as it sails off Catalina Island to an ideal spot for you to swim and snorkel in the crystal-clear waters. While settling in on the catamaran, you will find that there is plenty of room to stretch out and enjoy the spectacular views of the lush Dominican coastline. You might bask in the sun on the spacious decks, sip a cool tropical drink and enjoy the carefree merengue music playing in the background. Merengue was created in the 1920s in the Dominican Republic and has become the official national music and dance. Once the catamaran anchors, feel free to jump in the water for a refreshing swim and to snorkel. The exact location will be chosen the day of the excursion, but you can be sure that it will be teeming with marine life.

  • Adult from: € 119,39 EUR
  • Child from: € 100,88 EUR

Stroll along the cobbled streets of a replica 16th-century Mediterranean village and enjoy a leisurely horseback ride through an exclusive seaside resort. Although Altos de Chavon looks centuries old, the village is a total re-creation that first opened in 1982. Even so, the details and meticulous craftsmanship lend it an Old World ambiance. While there, you can expect to see a Grecian-style amphitheater, the stone St. Stanislaus Church and thousands of real artifacts in the village’s Archaeological Regional Museum. The views of the winding Chavon River below will be spectacular. For a different perspective of the countryside, you will follow a well-manicured trail through the Casa de Campo resort on horseback. Along the way, you will pass beautiful, privately owned villas and several extraordinary golf courses. The famed Pete Dye-designed Teeth of the Dog course is ranked among the world’s best.

  • Adult from: € 128,64 EUR

Boat Tour On The Chavon River

Enjoy a leisurely cruise on the Chavon River as it meanders through the densely forested countryside and explore the replica 16th-century Mediterranean-style village that perches on a hilltop high above the river. After settling in on the covered boat, you will head down the tranquil river, which eventually empties into the Caribbean Sea. The river cuts through a jungle that looks so primeval that it has been used as a location for movies such as “Rambo,” “Apocalypse Now” and “Jurassic Park.” You will also visit Altos de Chavon, the village that overlooks the river. While it will appear to be Old World, the village wasn’t built until the early 1980s. As you walk the cobbled streets, you will pass architectural gems such as a re-created Grecian-style amphitheater and a stone church that contains the ashes of St. Stanislaus.

  • Adult from: € 110,13 EUR

Countryside & Beach

Discover the joys of traditional Dominican life by visiting a sugarcane plantation, a cigar factory and one of the more remote beaches on the mainland. You will travel to all of these venues in an open-air safari-style vehicle designed for optimal viewing. Upon arriving at a company-owned town known as a “batey,” you will learn how sugarcane is harvested and processed. You will also be offered a taste of freshly cut sugarcane. Continuing on, you will enjoy a behind-the-scenes tour of the Tabacalera La Vega Fina factory, where master hand-rollers produce some of the finest cigars in the Dominican Republic. The cigars are known for their balanced character and rich flavor. To round out your immersion into the local lifestyle, you will spend time on Bayahibe Beach, an idyllic stretch of sand that is typically uncrowded. Feel free to swim in the crystal-clear waters or simply bask in the sun without a care in the world.

Certified Two-Tank Dive

Duration 3 1/2 hrs

Dive a sheer wall of various depths off Catalina Island, followed by a second dive along a coral reef so full of marine life that it is nicknamed “The Aquarium.” You will depart right from the pier on a custom catamaran dive boat and cruise the crystal-clear waters that surround the island to “The Wall,” the site of your first dive. As you descend to a depth that ranges from 40 to 90 feet, you will see several impressive ledges along a steep slope covered with coral and sponges and teeming with colorful tropical fish. The second dive will take place on the other side of Catalina Island at the coral reef known as “The Aquarium.” The nickname isn’t an exaggeration, as the marine life there is so abundant and varied that it is like diving in an aquarium. You might see dolphin, snapper, eels, rays, and plenty more swimming about, completely undisturbed by your presence.
