August 29, 2013, inside & out: a look at pitt’s newest residence hall.

The Nordenberg Hall elevator lobby features digital signage inside the University Place building entrance.

Spacious stairwells facing University Place afford a view of the Cathedral of Learning.

The University’s newest freshman residence, Nordenberg Hall, opened its doors this month to 543 freshmen and 16 resident assistants.

In addition to housing students on floors 3-10, the $59 million building’s street-level space at the corner of University Place and Fifth Avenue is home to the Student Health Pharmacy. Student Health’s Wellness Center incorporates counseling and student health services on the second floor.

PNC Bank is moving across Fifth Avenue later this year to the building’s first floor, making way for a Starbucks in its place. The University has yet to choose a tenant for a 2,500-square-foot retail space along Fifth Avenue in Nordenberg Hall,

A third-floor terrace features space for benches and tables; a portion of the terrace is green roof — a sustainable design feature that earns credits toward a LEED silver designation.

Associate Vice Chancellor for Business Eli Shorak told the University Times during a media tour of the residence hall earlier this month.

Rooms are furnished with beds, wooden desks and dressers and are equipped with a refrigerator, microwave and flat screen TV — in part to save on wear and tear on the building that can occur when students move large items in and out of the residence halls.

Lounge spaces are designed both as a living room where students can connect with one another informally and as a meeting space where students can gather for presentations. The common areas feature a semicircle of furniture, defined by a low wall that can double as seating. Space for quiet study sits just off each floor’s lounge area.

Welcome Back: Nordenberg Hall hopefully the beginning of campuswide changes

Welcome+Back%3A+Nordenberg+Hall+hopefully+the+beginning+of+campuswide+changes

By Stephen Suss / Columnist August 19, 2013

The newly built Nordenberg Hall will forever commemorate Pitt’s soon-to-retire chancellor’s legacy, but this honor might go down as the least significant of Mark Nordenberg’s many achievements.

That being said, Nordenberg Hall will be a freshman dormitory more elaborate than any that preceded it and will hopefully signal further changes in student living conditions. The question is, does this new residence hall mark the genesis of a Pitt that offers more and more amenities to its students, or is this new building a unique creation?

Unlike Nordenberg Hall, many of the freshman dorms on Pitt’s campus are old, and with their significant age come some issues. For instance, central air is something many students yearned for in their first year living in dorms such as Lothrop and Holland. Considering Pittsburgh’s dramatic seasonal changes in temperature, students were often left either freezing cold or sweltering hot while living in these halls.

In addition, Lothrop in particular was also known for being dark and gloomy all year round, despite the weather outside. However, these residence halls and their stark features serve as a sort of rite of passage, with the promise of better living conditions, such as Bouquet Gardens, in the future.

Although the nicer and newer sophomore dorms have the amenities and ambiance that students missed their freshman year, several of these dorms, such as Pennsylvania and Panther halls on the hill, came with the cost of being far from central campus and classes and, well, on a hill.

Nordenberg Hall, in this sense, will even have advantages when compared to sophomore dorms. Like its modern counterparts, it’s  new and has central air, but it’s also conveniently located near the Cathedral and most freshman classes. Students will also have flat-screen TVs provided in their room, something unheard of in previous dorms aside from the newest additions to the Bouquet Gardens complex. In addition, the hall will feature a fitness center, a rec room and an outdoor patio.

Although many of these features were available to freshmen before, they were never as easily accessible as they will be to the students living in Nordenberg. Pitt has been rising in the ranks academically under the leadership of Chancellor Nordenberg, and his residence hall might signal an important shift in the University’s layout to reflect and add to the strides that have already been made.

Land has always been scarce in Oakland, and as the University has grown it has had to expand in the little space that it could. Forbes Field is what later became Posvar Hall. When the University converted Pitt Stadium to the Petersen Events Center, Pitt’s football team began playing in the Steelers’ Three Rivers Stadium. Where Towers once hosted graduate students, it is now home to mostly freshmen who often move on to converted houses in South Oakland, which once housed immigrant families.

As it’s been, there are few buildings at the University that have not been built over something. Likewise, Nordenberg Hall will replace the old University Place

The Cult announce 40th anniversary UK tour for winter 2024

The dates conclude with a stop at London’s Royal Albert Hall

The Cult perform live.

The Cult have announced details of a UK tour, which will celebrate their 40th year as a band. Find upcoming dates and ticket details below.

Announced today (April 16), the shows are set for later this year and will see the iconic ‘80s rock group perform in 10 cities across the country. The dates come in celebration of a huge milestone for Ian Astbury and co., as this year marks four decades since the band formed as we recognise them today – swapping their name from the original title ‘Death Cult’ into ‘The Cult’.

“Following up from the great energy of Death Cult 8323 shows, I’m looking forward to bringing that sense of celebration of the band’s music, and the communion with our fans, to Cult 8424,” guitarist Billy Duffy said of the new announcement. “CFFC. Let the ceremony commence!”

The shows all take place this winter, and kick off on October 21 with an opening night at the De Montfort Hall in Leicester. This is followed the next night with a gig at Swansea Arena (22), followed by stops in Edinburgh (24), Manchester (25), Bristol (27), York (29) and Newcastle (30).

The final run of the new tour dates will take place in the first week of November; including a slot at Guildhall in Portsmouth on the 1st, and a show at Civic Hall in Wolverhampton the following night. The dates wrap up with a closing show at the prestigious Royal Albert Hall in London on November 4.

Tickets go on sale this Friday (April 19) at 10am BST. Visit here to get tickets and find a full list of tour dates below.

OCTOBER 21 – Leicester, De Montfort Hall 22– Swansea, Swansea Arena    24 – Edinburgh, Usher Hall  25 – Manchester, O2 Apollo  27 – Bristol, Beacon     29 – York, Barbican 30 – Newcastle, O2 City Hall

NOVEMBER: 1 – Portsmouth, Guildhall 2 – Wolverhampton, Civic Hall 4 – London, Royal Albert Hall

The dates for 2024 come following a tour the band embarked on last year, celebrating 40 years since their first formation under the name ‘Death Cult’ .

Taking place around the UK, Ireland and the US, the tour was called ‘Death Cult 8323’ and saw Duffy and Astbury return to play iconic venues they previously performed in at the start of their career.

The live shows focused on Death Cult and their eponymous EPs, and also boasted a setlist that spanned “the three phases of the band, from Southern Death Cult, to Death Cult, and The Cult’s first two albums: ‘Dreamtime’ (1984) and ‘Love’ (1985).”

More recently, Billy Duffy joined Johnny Marr on stage in Frome last summer to play tracks by The Smiths and Depeche Mode .

The on-stage appearance was the latest of the multiple times the two musicians have joined forces, as they both have a long history of playing music together – stemming back to their adolescent years.
