Skandagiri Sunrise Trek Reviews

Good............Experience!!!!!!!!!!!!. Overall trek experience was excellent t with good people joining the group and enjoying the trek. There were challenges but the trek lead handled them very well and on time. activities planned were done.😉😉

Lifetime memorable trip. We started at 3 in the night and reached the point just before sunrise. While capturing all of these photos and seeing the magical views I just had one feeling, “Earth is cute” 😊😊

This trip is fantastic with so knowledgeable guide and was truly the best trekking experience. Though we were exhausted but worth the view. Overall it was a great experience. Meet new people, Had a lot of fun while the night trek.😊😊

Cool................!!!!!!!!!!!!! I met many new people and made some great connections and friends on the go. I took up the responsibility of making sure 4 people who were younger than me are safe throughout the descent and we had some laughs too. This made me feel like a big brother taking care of his younger siblings, which was certainly a great feeling for me. 😊😊

Wonderful trek! The trek leaders were really helpful and fun to hang out with! Everything was managed perfectly even the transportation from Bangalore. They kept us well-informed about every next step. One of the best treks around Bangalore with the best groups! 😉😉

It was really nice trek. We were expecting to see the sunrise with a normal atmosphere but it turned out to be a rainy day so that put more adventure in the trek😊😊

Perfect................!!! It was an awesome experience on my first trek. The pickup and drop were on time and the journey of the trek was beautiful. Would definitely recommend everyone to go here.😋😋

The trek was easy and the best part was the schedule. The trek leader makes sure that we are right on time. The booking process was easy. ❤️‍🔥

The Skandgiri Trek was an amazing experience for someone like me who is new to trekking. It was challenging because of the rain and slippery conditions but quite an adventure. The view from the top and the sunrise was serene.

Our Skandagiri trek was really good. All members were friendly and funny. The organisers were good...felt they could be more cheering. Overall it was a great experience with Backpackers.💖💖💖

Best places to visit near skandagiri trek.

There’s a majestic rock formation overlooking Nandi Giri which has been admired by renowned personalities like Jawaharlal Nehru and Sir M. Visveswaraya during British Rule. As a traveler, I loved the unique trail that offered a delightful mix of rocks, boulders, and mud, surrounded by thick vegetation. It’s amazing to find such a trek so close to the city!

As you get closer to the summit, you’ll be captivated by the dilapidated fort walls, carved pillars, and stones that transport you back to the 18th century when Skandagiri Fort was alive with grandeur. Reaching the summit, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the intact Shiva Temple, still worshipped by devotees who climb all the way up. It’s a rare sight for a fort with surrounding ruins.

The summit rewards you with breathtaking views of the surrounding hills, forests, villages, and even Chikballapur town. After completing the Skandagiri Trek, you can explore nearby attractions like Nandi Hill, Muddenahalli (birthplace of Sir M. Visvesvaraya), and Bhoga Nandeeshwara Temple, an ancient Hindu temple complex with intricately carved pillars and a reflecting pool. Trust me, this adventure is one you won’t want to miss!

What is the best time to visit Skandagiri Trek

The best time to hike Skandagiri is from September to February, when the weather is more pleasant and the views are at their peak.

Skandagiri is a fantastic trek that can be enjoyed throughout most of the year. If you’re hiking during the summer, don’t forget to wear a cap to avoid dehydration from the sun’s heat.

For monsoon treks, bring a poncho, raincoat, and backpack rain cover to stay dry, but be cautious during heavy rain, as the trail can become slippery and challenging due to loose rocks and mud.

Although trekking between February and May is possible, the scenery may not be as breathtaking as in winter. Monsoon season is generally not recommended, as South India’s long rainy periods make the trail slippery and increase the risk of injury.

Trust me, trekking Skandagiri during the right season is an experience you won’t want to miss!

How to reach the starting point of the trek?

Reaching the Skandagiri Trek base location is a breeze, even if you haven’t selected transfers.

By Air: From Kempegowda International Airport Bengaluru, it’s just a 50-minute drive (43.7 km)

By Train: From Nandi Halt railway station, it’s a mere 25-minute drive (16.9 km).

By Bus: You can hop on a bus from Majestic Bus Station, Bengaluru, as there are buses running every 10 minutes to Chikballapur and vice versa.

By Own Vehicle: The Mylappanahalli Bus Stop is only 14 minutes away (7.8 km) by car or cab. If you’re coming from Bangalore City Center, it’s approximately 67.2 km away, and you can get there in around 1 hour 22 minutes via car or cab.

Availability of accommodations and food near the trek

When it comes to food during your Skandagiri adventure, Nandi grama, at the base of Nandi Hills, offers a few small eateries for a quick bite. For more dining options, head to Chikballapur, where you’ll find a variety of decent restaurants. Staying hydrated is essential, and you can find water at the trek’s base, Papagni Mutt, where a small groundwater tank provides a reliable source.

Accommodation:

As it is a one-day trek, there is no need to stay near the base. As per your convenience, ou can book good hotels in Chikballapur as well as Bangalore (because it isn’t that far) and travel from there.

The Difficulty level of the Skandagiri Trek

Skandagiri is an accessible trek for most adventurers, with no sections that are particularly difficult. However, it’s essential to be prepared for various trail conditions and exercise caution throughout the trek. During the monsoons, the trail can become slippery, making proper footwear crucial and checking weather forecasts to avoid heavy rain days advisable.

While scaling small rocks or walking on large stone slabs can be an enjoyable part of the trek, be careful not to slip or fall, as it could result in injuries. Additionally, some sections of the trail consist predominantly of muddy terrain, which can be slippery even without rain. Ensure you maintain firm footing in these areas to avoid slipping and sliding down the trail. With the right preparation and caution, you’ll have an incredible and safe time exploring the Skandagiri trek!

Skandagiri trek has always been one of the most controversial treks near Bangalore. Most of the times, people make it and many a times, people are also unable to make it. Officially, Skandagiri trek is banned. The reason being a lot of Incidents because it is one of the favorite points for people having suicidal tendencies. I hope you are getting me what am I trying to say here. It purely depends on our luck. However, there are also and in fact a lot of trekking places around Bangalore just like skandagiri. Here is the link:

We went to skandagiri on the 3rd oct 2015(Saturday), parked our vehicle in the Chikkaballapur town and took autos to the foothills. 5 of us left from bangalore it took us 2hrs from hennur via the route you suggested. I followed your reviews and found it very useful so i thought we’ll go.

The ride was amazing, but it started pouring once we reached chikballapur. Due to the rain and since we reached at 10pm the autos demanded 200 rupees for a one way fare. But seeing no other way to reach the destination we reluctantly took two autos.

The route from the town was pitch black as there was a power cut in the town, the road and the surrounding region was also not visible. Only for a second when the lighting struck could we see the surrounding in a flash. The ride was scary as the roads we flooded and very narrow, the auto driver claimed to have taken us on a route through the village which was one of the three route suggested on google maps.

1km before papagni math one person came with a flashlight and blocked the road, he claimed to be a forest official and prevented us from going any further. He was pretty strict and said that all treks are cancelled even during the day as a leopard had attacked cattle in the surrounding region. This seemed too fake, but we had to listen, we tried persuading him but he refused.

With no other option we had to return disappointed. Since we took the same auto he demanded us another 200 to go back, or else drop us there. But at 10:45 stranded in a place none of us knew we paid 300 to each auto for both ways.

This seemed difficult to believe as so many other people have trekked before and enjoyed the trek and the sunrise. I thought this whole experience was a scam to loot the tourists. Easy money for both parties the auto guy could have had a agreement with the official. But i don’t want to be judgemental about the proceeding but would take it as a learning experience. Can you please let me know if they have actually banned trekking to the hills or these guys are making a business giving us false information.

can i get an info about night trek ! is night trek available through out the year ??

Yes you can go for this trek throughout the year but best time to go for the trek is after monsoon and in winter. Due to unfortunate incident at skandagiri, now-a-days police camp there to prevent people from going for the night trek.

However people still got there.

What is the skandagiri trek famous for.

It is a site of historical significance, as the ruins of an 18th-century fort, which Tipu Sultan used as a base to fight the British, can be found on top of Skandagiri Hill. This attraction, also known as Kalavara Durga, is located about 60 kilometers from Bangalore. Skandagiri is also famous for its spectacular sunrise and sunset views.

When is the Best Time For Skandagiri Trek?

This adventure can be undertaken at any time. Winter, from November to January, is generally regarded as the best time to embark on this journey. Nothing beats stargazing after a challenging climb on a winter night, and in the monsoons, flora and fauna add a new dimension to the trek. However, the trek is tricky in the monsoon as the trail is slippery.

A summer trek to Skandagiri is possible if you have the stamina to endure South India's treacherous summer heat. Skandagiri is famous for its spectacular sunrise views. You can also go on the Skandagiri sunrise trek which can be done throughout the year, except during heavy monsoon.

How To reach For Skandagiri Trek?

You travel by road from Bangalore to Chikkaballapur. You can take a 15-minute auto-rickshaw ride or walk to the base point in Kalawara village. Alternatively, you can hire a cab from Bangalore to Chikkaballapura. You could drive your own car/bike and park it in Chikkaballapur village if you know someone you trust or bring a driver who will stay in the car while you trek.

If you are going on the Skandagiri trek with Treknomads, to and fro travel from Bengaluru to Chikkaballapura in a Tempo Traveller/Mini Bus will be arranged for you.

Where does Skandagiri Trek start?

The trek begins near the village of Kalwara at the Papagni Temple. During your journey, you can see the Kalwarbettar fort ahead of you. After passing through some dense foliage, you will arrive at the fort, but the adventure has only just begun. There are six such ruined fortresses that lead to the ancient temple at the top. The scenery is spectacular throughout, and there are small samadhi caves along the trail where you can rest for a while.

What all things should I carry for Skandagiri Trek?

Carry at least 2-3 litres of water in order to stay hydrated.

Take a comfortable backpack.

Carry a raincoat in the monsoon and a windbreaker in winter.

Wear good hiking shoes or running shoes.

Pack energy bars and light snacks.

Carry a torch with batteries to help you see at night.

Wear a hat & sunglasses.

Carry basic toiletries.

Skandagiri locks one of the most mesmerizing views of the sky and earth that meet at sunrise with clouds at an eye-level height urging you not to leave. A night trek in Bangalore, Skandagiri is a must for adventure and nature lovers, who can spend the night with a camp stay in front of an amazing bonfire. This 10km Skandagiri trek begins two hours before sunrise, where one has to climb up these hills by passing the wilderness until you to reach the absolute top.

Skandgiri is a beautiful hill near Bangalore, which is famous for trekking and sunrise views and is also known as Kalavara Durga among the locals. Surrounded by the Nandi Hills, it lies at an elevation of 1450 meters.

The trek to the hilltop location is a thrilling one with a moderate difficulty level for trekkers. It is known that people often spend the night under the stars at the hilltop which provides a splendid view of the surrounding hills.

Skandgiri was once home to a majestic fort built by Tipu Sultan, who was the ruler of the kingdom of Mysore in the eighteenth century. When the battle between his kingdom and the Britishers was lost, there was a shift in the power to the British officials.

The fort did not manage to thrive under their administration. Today, only a few walls of the fort remain erect while a major portion of the fort is now in ruins. Notable among the landscape are two temples, one at the bottom of the hill and another at the top, which did not come to any harm, while everything else lies in rubble today.

Also, this is one of the notable trekking spots in Bangalore , which can be visited not only during the day but also at night. In fact, undertaking a trek on the trail up the hill on a night of full moon is one of the adventurous things that you can do at Skandagiri. At the top of the hill, the display of natural beauty around you will be an enchantment to cherish!

• Skandagiri is only 60 km from Bengaluru and an excellent year-round trek for both novice and experienced trekkers. • It offers a panoramic view of the four neighboring ‘Giris’, villages, towns, and forests from the top, which is an amazing sight to behold. • Only a few hikes allow you to climb through steep rocks, hop boulders, and a muddy track. Skandagiri provides everything and is easily accessible from Bangalore. • The ruined walls, carved pillars, and stones of an ancient fort closer to the summit transport us to a time in the 18th century when Skandagiri Fort was bustling with life and splendour. • On top of Skandagiri Hill, there lies a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple’s grand architecture is another attraction of the Skandagiri trek. • Skandgiri is also well-known for its thrilling adventures and sunrise trekking opportunities which begin after sunset and last till early light, allowing you to have a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

How To Reach

From Bangalore Airport:

The nearest airport to Skandgiri lies in Bangalore. The hill town lies at an approximate distance of 60 km from Bangalore. Visitors have the option to ride on a bus, serviced by KSRTC, which runs at regular intervals between the two destinations.

The bus drops the passengers at Chikballapur, which is the last stop on this route. From that point, they may either take a leisurely stroll to reach Skandgiri or hire an auto to drop you off at the foot of the hills, 15 minutes away from the stop, while walking might take up 45 minutes of your time.

Best Time To Visit

The period between the months of April to June & November to March is the best time to visit Skandagiri. During this time, the weather is quite pleasant and the atmosphere turns into a lovely display of ambient colors. From July to October, the hilltop witnesses the rainy season, which must be avoided when visiting Skandagiri.

The temple is highly popular among pilgrims, especially during Brahmarathotsava.

Harshil P Raval

We were going on a track for first time, and were unable to cope with the pace of guides. They should divide themselves among to beginner and experienced groups. We had to return from from the trek after 80% of distance. Also the time alloted to much more for overall trekking. The whole trek could have completed in less time and we could have returned to Bangalore early.

The trek wasn't guided, everyone trekked by their own. No proper washroom facilities were made available and also no briefing was given regarding the itenary for example time of descent/ come back to base by 9 Am or so due to 2 people the rest 27 odd people had to wait for 1.5 hours.

Overall the trek was good. It was organised well, but one thing I would like to highlight that there was a kind of waste of time during the beginning. The pick up can start late.

This is my second trek with escape2explore, the first being Kunthi Betta. Skandagiri trek was a lifetime experience. Arranged well. Well coordinated guides. Especially Mr. Ayan, who had a great patience in helping & to take care till the last trekker. One of my memorable trek. Kudos to escape2explore 😁👍👏👏

Nayan Nakhate

@escape2explore Thanks for this amazing experience. This was one tiring trek but it is totally worth it after reaching the peak. I totally enjoyed the beautiful view at the top of the hill , the sunrise and was literally in the laps of those beautiful clouds. Just enjoyed every bit of it. I highly recommend the trekkers to wear trekking shoes with a good grip. It was overall an awesome experience. To all the trekkers out thr..Go for it 🙂

It was good experience traveling with Escape2Explore. Very supportive Guides and friendly. ✌

bangalore to skandagiri trek distance

It was an awesome experience but wasn't easy as expected. It'd be a challenge for the first timers for sure but the key is one has to keep going. We missed the sunrise due to clouds but the journey was beautiful. Breakfast was good while coming back to Bangalore. Get a good torch for the trek and a normal winter jacket which will be required on the peak. Would surely recommend for the trek lovers!

bangalore to skandagiri trek distance

A very well-organized and extremely well-planned trip was organized. I went alone and made friends during the trip, as we had a fun session of introducing ourselves while on our way to Skandagiri Hills. mubarak and rock were our trek leaders, and they were as friendly and accommodating as one gets. Unfortunately, we didn't get to see the much-hyped sunrise, as the weather was very cloudy. But our trek leaders made sure we wait and have fun at the hilltop as long as there's still a chance to watch the sunrise. Going back down the hill was another good experience, as we stopped at certain points and took pictures with the beautiful background. It was my first trek, and it went really well

bangalore to skandagiri trek distance

It can be a really good experience for the people who are interested in night trekking. But must say it's not an easy one for the people who are not in practice of any kind of physical activities or exercise. It's at least 4 km climb which people need to complete in 1.5 hours. Please keep enough water and snacks with you, people usually feel hungry while climbing down. The vendor who conducted the activity was punctual while picking up people from pickup points. They guided well while climbing up in dark. Also, they provided a good breakfast at a nice place - Ground Zero. People who are interested in night trek, need not think twice before booking this trip.

bangalore to skandagiri trek distance

It was a well planned trekking ,except for the fact that they picked us up a little late . Very friendly .Swamy(Organiser head) was very friendly and co-operated with us all through the tour. It was a well week-end relaxation for all the trekkers .

bangalore to skandagiri trek distance

. It was a very good experience for me walking in the middle of the night in wilderness, wow i always wanted to do that. Need to appreciate the guide's patience as our group was struggling and the last one to reach the top but he was there to guide us back and fro. Looking forward to have more such experiences with "escape2explore". For me its complete paisa vasool:-)

bangalore to skandagiri trek distance

Skandagiri night trek was an amazing experience... 6 out of 7 participants were 1st timer (from perspective of trekking)... na manojs been the 1st point of contact at escape2explore... he is an amazing partner and ensures that his customers are well informed and he goes out of his way to help... He even surprised us by joining us for the trek just to ensure that we had a glitch free time... Swamy - our guide was a fantastic resource... he knew his area and subject... great point to share is that all of us came back in-hurt considering it was the 1st time

Awesome experience. Travel:- If you are opting for a bike it will cost you around 500rs. But you need to travel for 140km up n down. Else opt for the Traveller 1350rs. Level of trekking:- Depends on person to person. For me it was moderate. But if you are a newbie in trekking I will say it's difficult. You will get tired for sure. It is worth going place. Far far better than Nandi hills. This is overlooked. Required things:- Carry a torch or mobile torch is more than enough. Carry something to eat. Raincoat, water bottle. Zenith:- This is a beautiful experience you will have once you reach. Can't explain in words. You need to go there to experience it :)

It was exciting to go on trekking and it was a really beautiful place. It was a nice experience although you tend to get really tired if you have no experience whatsoever, so I would recommend to do a bit of physical activity before. The trekking guides were super supportive and enthusiastic. Once u reach the hilltop, you feel a real established sense of calm. Try to make the most of it as you don't get enough time. Although it was tiring, it was worth it once you reach the top.

bangalore to skandagiri trek distance

The thrill of excitement on your first trek is amazing. This trip was the first ever trek for all of us. The trek is of medium difficulty at some points and also it is a night trek so torches are a must, without torches it is very difficult to trek. There are steep slopes at some places but people call out those spots and help each other to get over it. For me the trip was amazing very nice view of sunrise and decent in daylight was delightful. First timers should go on this trek as it's not that hard and it is hard for a day so u won't feel too tired after the trek. They provide delicious breakfast after coming down in a local restaurant too. :)

Hello everyone, I am more than happy to share my experience of my first night trek. This trek gave me a lot of new friends, walk in nature in the night with so many people around me having a good experience together. This being my first trek I am happy to tell these experiences & moments were possible because of all the coordinators who helped us.I am going to get more of my friends in the future events.

bangalore to skandagiri trek distance

like to go on more such trips. One of them even took some good snaps of/for us :). The bonfire was very much necessary at the peak and we had fun keeping the fire on nullifying the effect of strong winds :P. Overall the trek was fun and memorable except for some constant unnecessary noise created by a bunch of people who were part of the trekking group

bangalore to skandagiri trek distance

This can be a great trek for people who are just starting off. Swamy and Team followed all the standard operating procedures of a trek.Gave directions, One lead , one was with the group and the other towards the end. Overall, they did a decent job managing the group though it almost became a 'crowd'. They were also very tolerant to some noisy people and handled the whole thing with ease. Swamy's Team was very energetic and chatty which made the trek back down all the more interesting. We stopped at a decent hotel for breakfast on our way back. Food was great for the starved stomach! The cost of 1150 includes the breakfast. However, I feel Swamy & Team can work towards a better pricing. Not to forget, The only downside would be that Swamy & team weren't punctual. Me and my friends were waiting for over 1.5 hours at Hebbal from the stipulated time! If they improve on the punctuality quotient , they can be great! Overall a nice experience!

bangalore to skandagiri trek distance

We were 3 girls and it was our first night trek to skandagiri hills. It was a great experience. Shahid and Rock led the whole trek well..they took care of each and every person in the team and also helped the people who were not able to climb up the hills by carrying their bags I guess nobody in the other trip organizers will help this much. Thanks a lot for making us feel comfortable and we enjoyed this night trek.

bangalore to skandagiri trek distance

I went on Skandagiri sunrise trek and had very good trekking experience. Pickup was on time and guides were friendly.Breakfast after the trek was much needed and it was good.Went on Antargange night trek and cave exploration and had a very good experience. The crew was very supportive during the trek.

. Skandgiri the place itself indicates the hill and that too 1350 altitude range and trek of 5km one side. It was one of the best treks in my life. Our guide rock is too good and simply awesome guy. He has been with us throughout the trek and guided nicely. I enjoyed the trip superbly.Highlights of trip:11.20 we have started from BTam layout to Skandgiri. Mrng 2 we have reached and waited till the gates of the forest has been opened. Forest gates opened at 4 in the morning and we started our trek. Skandagiri trek was good experience. But trek could have been better managed if guides stayed with us during the trek. Many times we lost way and were not clear on which way to go. Also we had to wait one hour before starting the trek after reaching the destination.

We (7 friends) booked the trek to Skandagiri hills with this site. The trip was exciting along with 33 members and 2 guides. They had made a good communication before the trek about the necessary steps and items. On the entire trek we were guided by them. One at the beginning of the group and one at end. We had a great time at the entire trek. The transportation facility provided by them was really well managed with multiple pickup points on the designated route. Even they have done multiple drops. It was mostly convenient for people who live in Banshankari to Hebbal route. Breakfast was also served post trek completion at a nearby hotel. They had served 1 idli, 1vada 1/2 masala dosa, 1tea/coffee with chutney and sambar. The food was good and the hotel was neat and clean. It was my first trek and we really enjoyed a lot.

This is undoubtedly one of the best sunrises I have seen ever. When you stand at the top of the mountain and see the sun rise in front of your eyes, I don’t think anything else can parallel that. Forest charges are included in the package cost so you don’t have to pay for it additionally while on the trek, it is taken care of by Escape2Explore. Skandagiri for me was an unknown place before I found it on the Escape2Explore website. So, there must also be many such places which are waiting to be explored. I will definitely try and check out more such spots around Bangalore and visit them along with my friends. The price of the whole outing is just Rs. 1150, it is truly the best deal one can get for this destination. Once if you visit the place, I am sure you will be delighted to visit more of them.

Shreya Soni

This is one of the best treks I have ever been to, it is something totally different and mind-blowing. I must admit that this one is specially for the ones who have been to treks several times and not first-timers or amateurs, so to say. The journey is long, tiring and consumes you totally. But the moment you witness the sunrise from up above, it will be worth every ounce of effort you have put into this lovely trek. This is surely the best sunrise I have ever seen in my life. You can literally witness a bed of clouds and the sun rises above those clouds. It seems totally surreal in the morning and this is the hour for which you take so much efforts to climb this peak. No matter how difficult it seems, complete this trek because at the end, there will be something you have never witnessed before. Also, I would like to thank the team from Escape2Explore who guided us throughout the journey and looked after us in all conditions.

Sunrise at Skandagiri

When to begin

You should begin your trek at around 4 in the morning since it is a relatively shorter trek. The trail is well-marked throughout the trek so finding your way to the top would be easy.

The trek starts from Papagni Temple near the village of Kalwara. The first few minutes is a semi-dry trail but soon after lush greenery begins. You can see the Kalwarbettar fortress right ahead of you during your trek. After walking through some dense foliage, you will reach the fortress, but the fun has just started. There are six such ruined fortresses which lead to the ancient temple at the top. The view throughout is glorious and along the trail, there are small samadhi caves where you can rest for a bit.

The route is safe and no snake attacks have been reported. After a 4 to 5-hour hike with intermittent fort ruins marking your way, you will reach the summit and witness the majestic sunset.

Descent & Return

Sea of clouds

The trek is especially undertaken for its appeal at night and most people camp overnight to enjoy the breathtaking sunrise, however, there are a few who begin their trek early in the morning and return by sundown. We recommend night camping under the stars and nature as it makes for a more rewarding experience. To return, you can follow the same trail back, visit Nandi Hills nearby if you like or proceed to Bangalore.

Abandoned Temple looks haunting at sundown

Skandagiri Bangalore Information with Histroy, Location & Time

Budget Hotels > Travel Blog > Top Attractions > Skandagiri Bangalore Information with Histroy, Location & Time

Skandagiri is part of the five prominent hills found in Chikkaballapura district, Karnataka that is frequented by tourists for the excellent trekking prospects it offers. From the top of the hill, the stunning views of the neighbouring hills and the landscape make the journey worthwhile. It is also a site of historical significance, as on top of the Skandagiri Hill, you will come across the ruins of an 18 th -century fort, which was used by Tipu Sultan as a base to fight against the British. This attraction is also known as Kalavara Durga and is located at a distance of about 60 km from Bangalore. So, whether you are a trekker, nature lover, or history buff, plan a trip to Skandagiri next time you are in the city.

Here is some information to help you plan a trip to Skandagiri.

Skandagiri, Bangalore: Information

  skandagiri, bangalore: history.

This attraction has a glorious past; it hosts the ruins of a fort, which has a special place in Karnataka’s history. The great Tipu Sultan made use of this fort for a battle against the British. However, the ruler of the Kingdom of Mysore lost the revolt against the British who conquered and dismantled the fort in 1791 AC.

Skandagiri, Bangalore: Today

Skandagiri is now quite popular for both day and night treks. The Tipu Sultan fort suffered immense damage over the years and is in a ruined condition now. However, some walls still stand tall and remind about the historic event. The hills have two temples – one at the bottom and the other one at the top. The temple on the foothills is known as Papagni Matt and is among the oldest matts in the state of Karnataka. There are two caves and both lead to the temple at the top. As per locals, the temples are somewhat in good condition, but everything else lies in rubble.

Trekking at Skandagiri, Bangalore

Skandagiri Hill offers one of the most wonderful and enthralling trekking experiences in the region. The trek begins from Papagni Matt located at Kalwara village. You can start the trek as early as four in the morning to reach the top before sunrise. The fantastic view of the rising sun lighting up the neighbouring Nandi Hills and Muddenahalli makes for a remarkable sight. The trail is a mix of mud, boulders, rocks, gravel and thick vegetation, which can be slippery in some areas. This is an easy trek, but for someone who is not physically active may have to do some preparation before planning a visit.

About the trek: The trek is 4 km long and it takes about 2-3 hours before you reach the hilltop situated at a height of 4430 feet above sea level. The terrain is a bit rugged, so you have to be careful while traversing the path. It is covered with dense grass and bushes and can be extremely slippery at night. The route has six ruined fortresses and also some small Samadhi caves where trekkers can relax for a bit.

Trek timings: If you register with Ecotrails, a division of Karnataka’s Forest Division, then the trek timings start from 4 am to 5 pm. You need to report for the trek between 4 am to 9:30 am.

Useful information about Skandagiri treks:

  • Trekkers have to take permission from Ecotrails either online – https://myecotrip.com/trailDetail/3/SkandagiriWhat or at the starting point.
  • The entry fee for treks is INR 250 per person.
  • Carry the essentials with you, such as clothes, hiking shoes, dry food, water, toiletries, power bank, rain protector, backpack and a torch.

Places to see at Skandagiri, Bangalore

Apart from trekking adventures, Skandagiri has some wonderful places for tourists . The popular ones are:

  • Papagni Matt: This temple of Goddess Parvati and many local deities is one of the most wonderful attractions in Skandagiri. It has a strong and captivating aura that leaves everyone mesmerised. Devotees can feel strong spiritual vibrations as soon as they enter the temple. It is the starting point for treks and almost all trekkers pay their respects and seek blessings at the temple before commencing the climb.
  • Shiva Temple: The ancient temple is situated at the top of the Skandagiri Hill and is known for its rustic design. After reaching the hilltop, devotees flock to the temple and seek blessings of Lord Shiva.
  • Tipu Sultan Fort: The fort was used as a stronghold by Tipu Sultan in his revolt against the British rule. Although a major part of the fort is damaged, the beauty of its ruins attracts many tourists. Some walls still stand strong and give an idea about the fort’s structure. It has two caves, the first one at the bottom, and the second one in the middle. There is a stone house structure at the top where the trekkers can relax.
