14 Nights 15 Days

Day 1 : Prague – First Impressions of Bohemia

Prague rises evocatively around the Vltava River with cathedral spires and palace facades stretching across the rolling hills. Historical bridges connect the two sides, postcard points that provide a great first impression of the city. These bridges have seen both beauty and war, their sturdy presence a reassuring constant in the very heart of Bohemia. Touch down in Prague, and you will be transferred to a luxury hotel close to the river. Many of the city’s core attractions are within walking distance, and this first day will be all about taking a stroll without your guide. Tomorrow you will get to know the stories and how to distinguish the Baroque from the Gothic, but this first evening is all about your first impressions of Prague and its ineffable Bohemian culture.

Day 2 : Prague – A Historical Walking Tour of Prague and Its Castle

Explore Prague at a relaxed pace, a three-hour walking tour ensuring that you feel the city’s history. Admire the harmony of architectural styles on the Old Town Square, explore the inimitability of the city’s central churches, wander down cobbled lanes, and hear the stories that accompany medieval-era structures. There are stories of pride, as well as tales of resistance and revolt, not to mention the mysteries that remain unsolved. After lunch, you can take a walk through Prague Castle and its interior, and then onwards to St Vitus Cathedral, St George’s Basilica and the Old Royal Palace. The stories will keep coming, and as you stop at a cafe close to the hotel, it will feel as though you have covered a thousand years in one day.

Day 3 : Prague – Day Trip to Kutna Hora and its Bone Chapel

Kutna Hora is another piece of old-world Bohemia, a UNESCO World Heritage town as sublime as it is surreal. Filled with chandeliers constructed from human bones, extravagant old palaces, and a massive silver mine, you can take a private day trip to immediately step back into the Middle Ages and into a town as unorthodox as Bohemia itself. Sedlec Ossuary is the centerpiece, an eery Gothic church decorated by more than 40,000 human skeletons. Skulls gaze from the ceiling, femurs make up a coat of arms, and none of it is intended as a memorial. This is religious art, the Bohemian way, as unusual an experience as donning a medieval cape and descending into the abandoned silver mine. On today’s tour, you will also explore the Gothic at Santa Barbara Cathedral and discover a royal palace once inhabited by kings like John the Blind, Premysl the Ploughman, and Vladislaus the Jagiellonian.

Day 4 : Budapest – The Royal City on the Danube

Look only at the postcards, and Prague and Budapest can appear similar. Both are royal cities dominated by magnificent regal architecture and sliced in half by a famous river, yet these capitals are very different in feel. Budapest bares its history with pride, primarily in the sheer scale of its old buildings. You will immediately sense that this city played an integral role in Europe’s history, with an almost overpowering grandeur gazing down at you from the riverbanks. You will fly from Prague to Budapest and have a day at leisure, soaking up a city that will surprise you at every turn.

Day 5 : Budapest – Culinary Tour of Budapest and Its Neighborhoods

History is unmissable in Budapest, as is the architectural grandeur. You will not need a historical tour because you are surrounded by the past, and it’s stories everywhere you go. So instead, take a private culinary tour of the city with food providing a focus to go beyond the famous attractions. Taste your way through the spectacular Central Market Hall, and then stroll through different neighborhoods. You will likely find a kosher bakery, an old candy store, spices from the east, and artisanal chocolates all on the same lane, and then there will be the more traditional as you enjoy a tasting in a historical Hungarian butcher. Complete your culinary tour by tasting wines from different Hungarian regions, and then return to your hotel with both a full stomach and a very keen impression of the city’s past.

Day 6 : Budapest – A Relaxed Day in the City and Evening Danube River Cruise

Spend today exploring more of Budapest. Walk across the bridges between Buda and Pest, finding the city’s two contrasting characters. There is evidence of both the Ottomans and the Austrians, along with the other splendors this royal city provides. Your day is self- guided, and one great option is to spend the morning at one of the old spas, with Gellert Baths the most famous example. In the evening, you can cruise on the Danube, a live orchestra keeping you company as the palace walls are illuminated after dusk. You will dine on the boat while being treated to the contrasts of the Buda and Pest river banks.

Day 7 : Zagreb – Walking the Old and New of the Croatian Capital

Missed by many and misunderstood by most, Zagreb is a city that connects Central Europe with the Adriatic. Cultures come together, as do art and cuisine, making for a very intriguing first day in Croatia. It’s a 3-hour private transfer from Budapest to Zagreb, and you will spend your afternoon on a walking tour to get to know both the old and the new. Walk beneath the Stone Gate, gaze up at the Baroque edifice that is St Catherine’s Church, take a coffee on St Mark’s Square and feast your eyes on the roof of St Mark’s Church. Try zagorki strukli on the route, a dumpling-like specialty filled with cheese. Dinner reservations have been made for the evening for a chance to try Croatian cuisine.

Day 8 : Split – Waterfalls and Wonder as you Travel to the Coast

Croatia loves to surprise. The Adriatic coastline is well known, yet the interior offers wonders that are rare to find in Europe. Travel to Rastoke, an 18th-century village flanked by a stunning collection of waterfalls. Watermills dot the river, along with the most unusual of houses. From Rastoke, you journey upriver, into the thick green landscapes of Plitvice Lakes National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that likes to arouse all the senses. Waterfalls thunder into green lakes, fresh fragrances tantalize in the forest, and you are surrounded by a surreal work of nature. Explore on your own as there are countless different walking trails that lead you to different cascades. Lunch will be very traditional at a restaurant in nature, and then after the national park, you will continue southwest to the first of four nights in Split.

Day 9 : Split – Discovering Split and Trogir

Now you are on the Adriatic and Trogir is a delightful place to start. Built by the Romans and the Venetians, the city is a mazy realm of Renaissance architecture and decorous churches. Each of the central lanes is just a few meters wide, but when you descend through this labyrinth, you reach a wide seaside promenade dominated by cafes and bars. Spend the morning on a guided walking tour of Trogir, and then have an afternoon in Split with a local guide to show you the intricacies and inimitability of Diocletian’s Palace. Your evening will be free with Riva Harbor a perennial favorite for Split visitors, a place where you can dine and watch the world go by along the sea.

Day 10 : Split – Wine Tasting and Konoba Dining on a Hvar Island Day Trip

Take the fast catamaran across the Adriatic to Hvar, and you will be greeted by a guide for a full-day tour of the island’s charms. Stari Grad is a magnificent sight, a quiet 2,400-year-old town made by thick stone slabs and charmingly simple architecture. Jelsa showcases old fishing life while Napoleon Fortress provides superb views over the island and sea. Explore the island’s interior and then go wine tasting at a small vineyard, before a traditional konoba lunch based on ancient recipes. Konoba is a word for a restaurant in coastal Croatia, and now refers to the old farmhouse and fishing style of food, and you will enjoy the change in pace. Finish your tour with some free hours in Stari Grad before taking a fast catamaran back to Split.

Day 11 : Split – Cruising the Vis and Pakleni Islands

A second day will be spent on the Adriatic Sea as you go island hopping through the archipelago. Cruise into the Blue Cave and admire the strange underwater color that is created by light pushing through a hole beneath the surface. Swim in the Green Cave with the water illuminated by tiny cracks in its ceiling. Stop at a cove on Ravnik Island, and then have an afternoon in and around the Pakleni Islands where fresh seafood combines with quiet beach hours. You will cruise back into Split late in the afternoon, just as the city’s atmosphere is getting livelier. By now you will know Split’s old town very well, and perhaps have a favorite place for a sundowner drink.

Day 12 : Dubrovnik – Oysters Experience, Old-World Wines, and Terracotta Roofs

Oysters can be plucked from the rocks in Ston and then tasted with your toes in the salty waters. Epic city walls can be walked here as well, providing dramatic views over medieval churches and olive groves. Ston’s salt works are the oldest in the world that are still in use, and a wonderful place for understanding the historical and the natural way to produce salt. Enjoy a seafood lunch here as well, with the mussels from Ston as famous as the oysters. You can also stop by an old winery with a selection of cultivars tested in a picturesque tasting room. All of this is part of the journey as you travel south along the coast to Dubrovnik, for the first of three nights within the Old Town.

Day 13 : Dubrovnik – A Dreamy Royal City on the Adriatic

Walking through Dubrovnik is like opening a treasure chest. Around every corner, you turn and each street you walk you unravel another gem. A traditional barbershop may be perched on a marble road as imposing city gates curve above your head. Small boutiques sell cloth and buttons alongside Baroque cafes and glamorous restaurants. Almost every building is topped by terracotta tiles, and your eyes are captivated as you walk almost two kilometers along the city walls. This is the iconic city-republic, encased within a thousand years of fortifications. You will explore slowly on a walking tour, and then take the cable car to Mt Srd and the panorama of Dubrovnik and its coastline.

Day 14 : Dubrovnik – Villages of Konavle Day Tour

The forests and mountains around Dubrovnik have a history as long as the republic. From the Romans to the Slavs and Venetians, the Konavle region is another destination for really feeling the history. On your private tour you will begin in Cavtat, where Bukovac’s art provides the centerpiece of many impressive buildings, and then drive to small villages that are tucked into mountain folds and surrounded by wild olive groves. You will stop for a village-style lunch, a culinary experience that has far more to savor than the region’s famous olive oil. Return to Dubrovnik by late afternoon and one final night of pleasure in the Old Town. It’s particularly atmospheric after dark when the cobbled alleyways are lit by small iron lanterns.

Day 15 : Dubrovnik – Departure

Enjoy a final morning in the Old Town before departing to Dubrovnik’s international airport and your departure home.

Countries Visited

Places visited, suggested duration, customizable itinerary, city of 1,000 spires.

The city of Prague has a storybook atmosphere cast in its riverside location, looming castle, and countless spires decorating the skyline. The mixture of Baroque, Renaissance, and Gothic architecture offer insight into the eclectic ascetics of the city’s history. Your private transfer meets you at Václav Havel Airport and quickly escorts you to your luxurious hotel situated near the Vltava River. Consider learning more about your European tour operator who strives to make this the most memorable trip of your life. Prague has an energetic atmosphere winding around the streets of Old Town. You can hear the river brush against the banks and stone bridges connecting Old Town to the regal district beneath the castle. The Clementinum National and National Library is one of the largest historical complexes in Europe.

The library contains more than six million books. The Astronomical Tower stands 223 feet tall, providing a tremendous view of the city’s Old Town, and collected spires that perforate the sky. Frescoes decorate the ceiling of Library Hall, which date back to the 18th century. The motifs provide allegories for education and numerous Jesuit saints. The aroma of leather-bound books and rich wooden shelves fills the room. Globes of various sizes embellish the center of the library. The beauty of the exterior architecture and grandeur of the interior design embodies the story of the city, rich with adornments, captivating in its antiquity, and bright with modern charms.

What's Included:

Fit for Nobility

In the morning, the market brims with locals and vendors alike. The aroma of freshly baked bread fills Old Town. Display windows showcase elegant truffles made in the small kitchen at the back of the store. At breakfast, you find a collection of cosmopolitan foods set next to traditional Czech dishes, such as dark rye bread and yeast rolls. The aroma of rich hot chocolate accompanies the sweet pleasures of local honey. After your meal, your guide meets in the hotel lobby ready to take you on a marvelous private tour of the city’s regal history. Prague Castle stands tall above the city on Vltava’s left bank. The castle spires rise in a row nestled close together. The complex encompasses an area of more than 403,000 square feet.

The grounds, established in the 9th century, have continued to serve as the seat of Czech monarchs. A series of historic buildings surround the cobblestone courtyard. When you enter the complex, you find a staggering display of eclectic architectural styles due to various restructuring throughout the centuries. In Vladislav Hall, the stone-vaulted ceilings have detailed span over 52 feet and are adorned with winding latticework that resemble vines winding up the ceiling. The wonders of the stately world continue outside the castle grounds and along the Golden Lane.

The Kafkaesque in Prague

The Letna district is nestled between two parks, one of which has a panoramic view of Old Town. In the morning, you can see the sunlight glisten off of the spires of the historic city. A beer garden offers a taste of the Prague culture in the view, the atmosphere, and the flavor of the city’s celebrated beer. After breakfast, your guide greets you at the hotel. You are eager to explore the distinct districts of the old city. The ambiance of the meandering alleyways and hidden lanes create a mixture of settings, ranging from fairytale-like in the pockets of Gothic architecture to reminiscent of espionage dating back to the Soviet era. Your guide leads you to the Jewish Quarter.

The district is filled with Art Nouveau apartment buildings dating back to the 19th century. Historic synagogues encompass a variety of Jewish identities, including Spanish and Eastern European. The Jewish Museum now contains one of the largest collections of sacred Jewish artifacts. The Old-New Synagogue dates back to the 13th century and is one of the oldest working synagogues in Europe. You step down to enter the synagogue’s main doorway as its construction predates the raising of the main street. A 15th-century wrought iron grill surrounds wooden pulpit. The synagogue has a history of secrets, beginning with the legend of the Golem and passing along the traditions of a storytelling heritage.

Seeing the Velvet Revolution

Glass cruise boats float down the Vltava River beginning in the morning. Visitors can take in the skyline of the castle district and Old Town with a single glance. After breakfast, you venture out into the city to explore the locations associated with the Velvet Revolution. People of the Czech Republic refer to the Soviet’s return of the government to its people as “Velvet,” because the revolution was peaceful, and ended in a compromise. Your tour begins in Wenceslas Square, situated in the heart of New Town. The district was erected in the 14th century and has wide lands lined with trees.

Wenceslas Square stretches 2,460 feet long, nearly 197 feet wide, and crowned by the National Museum. In 1989, 250,000 people gathered in the square. From the steps of the National Museum, you can look out over the length of shops, hotels, and restaurants; imagine the crowds of people parading through the city with one common goal. The Prague State Opera opened its doors in the late 19th century and continues to tell the stories written in music by famous conductors. It also highlights the beauty of the building’s architecture as well as the grandeur of a post-communist Prague.

On the Banks of the Danube

In the morning, locals crowd into Misto, a chic café marketing to the Bohemian and energetic peoples of the city. People linger in the natural light pouring through the window and enjoy a traditional or cosmopolitan breakfast accompanied by the sweet, simple pleasures of a freshly brewed coffee. After breakfast, your private transfer meets you at the hotel and escorts you through the mountainous landscape of Central Europe. You approach Budapest from the north and find the wide banks of the Danube.

Its blue waters rush through the center of the city, dividing the districts of Buda and Pest. The city boasts excellent food, delectable wines, and a vibrant culture that embodies the spirit of Hungary. The mountains of Buda rise over the scenic west and to the east of the city is the lush greenery of the Great Plain. You settle into your lavish hotel situated in the heart of the city, where your guide meets you. Your introductory tour takes you along the extensive streets of Pest.

The ornate architecture of Hungarian Parliament stands on the bank of the Danube. The building was erected in the 19th century with a Gothic Revival style. The central dome adorns the symmetrical façade, which overlooks the river. Your guide leads you through the stunning design of the complex, which includes ten courtyards and 29 separate staircases. The central hall contains the Holy Crown of Hungary. The crown dates back a millennium as one of the very few Byzantine crowns to have survived the years.

Buda Introductions

Begin your day atop Castle Hill on the banks of Buda. You can see the rushing waters of the Danube and the expansive reach of Pest. The neighborhood is more than a half a mile atop a limestone plateau standing 557 feet above the river. Caves dot the hillside, filled with natural thermal springs. The air is crisp and cool in the morning. The Royal Palace was erected in the 13th century, and the surrounding Old Town was where the commoners once lived. You can hear the gears of the funicular turning as the carriage travels up and down the bluff. Colorful buildings brighten with the drifting sun.

Gothic arches and Baroque houses continue to line the cobblestone streets. Your guide leads you to Matthias Church, a 14th-century Gothic structure. The tower climbs 262 feet above the forecourt. Colorful patterns and motifs decorate the interior wall where your guide points out fragments of the original stone structure. The stained glass windows create a vibrant array of light streaming into the central nave; the variations of blue cast an ethereal glow in the open space. Your introduction to the culture of the city continues with a culinary exploration, indulging in the flavors of the cuisine and wine celebrated throughout the world.

Searching for the Empire

Budapest was once the co-capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, sharing the duties and delight of the kingdom with Vienna. The grace and grandeur of the empire’s historical culture remain prominent in certain areas of Budapest. After breakfast, you follow your guide through the diverse streets of the city in search of the elegance for which the city was once known, and for which Budapest is once again gaining prominence. Your tour begins at the 19th-century Opera House located in the heart of Pest. The structure is considered one of the best opera houses in the world due to its lavish characteristics and wonderful acoustics. The auditorium can hold up to 1,200 people. A staircase with an elaborate wooden rail traverses the marble arches and vaulted roofs. A fresco by Károly Lotz depicts the Greek gods on Olympus. The radiance from the Opera House derives from the graceful structure and memorable décor. In the afternoon, you can cross the riverbanks and return to Buda to relish a tranquil moment soaking in the city’s famous Thermal Baths.

The City from the Sky

In the morning, street vendors pile Lángos high on their stalls. Locals love the delectable fried flat bread, often covering the bread in cheese or garlic. The energy of the city is undeniable. You can spot glass-dome boats traversing the Danube near the House of Parliament. Across the river, the Castle continues to watch over the historic cityscape. People walk along the largest street in the city, the Grand Boulevard, and enjoy the deluxe shops and vibrant displays. After breakfast, your private transfer escorts you from your hotel to Ferihegy Airport for your flight home. You have experienced the splendor of Budapest and Prague that has bordered on the legendary. You could always extend your time in Europe and indulge in more of what the continent has to offer.

the beautiful town of Prague

One week in Central Europe might not seem like much time. But, with some advance planning and ambition, you can definitely have a bucket list adventure.

Central Europe is incredibly appealing because (generally) it’s not swamped with hordes of tourists. It’s also much cheaper than, say Paris , Barcelona , or the London .

Central Europe offers compelling must see sites and landmarks, as well as unique off the beaten path destinations.

croatia budapest prague tour

But Central Europe is huge! There’s so many thing to do and see in Central Europe and so little time, at least for most of us. How to choose between the myriad options?

Central Europe includes the countries of Germany, Austria, Croatia, Slovenia, Hungary, Switzerland, and the Czech Republic. There are many different routes through this region of Europe.

8 Sample 1 Week Itineraries For Central Europe

Here are eight ways to spend one week in Central Europe

1. Itinerary #1: One Week in Croatia

Croatia is a stunningly beautiful country. It has something for everyone — waterfall-laced landscapes, gorgeous beaches, historic landmarks, Roman ruins, and charming hamlets. In the sunny Dalmatian Coast, dramatic cliffs rise above islands set in azure water.

In this one week itinerary, you’ll spend 3 nights in Dubrovnik and 4 nights in Split. You could base in Zadar instead of Split, if you’d prefer a smaller and less busy town. But it’s easier to ferry to the islands from Split.

Dubrovnik is a magnetic fairytale walled city in Croatia. The Venetian-Gothic town is fairytale pretty, the perfect stage set version of what you would imagine a medieval European city looks like.

the UNESCO-listed town of Dubrovnik Croatia

Dubrovnik has glamorous palazzi, orange terra cotta rooftops, stunning views of the shimmering Adriatic Sea, and fame as a Game of Thrones filming location.

Split’s an ancient town that dates back to Roman times. It has an incredible natural setting and isn’t just a beach/party town.

There’s a whole range of drool worthy historical, cultural, and natural offerings, including one of the world’s best preserved Roman palaces. Split is the perfect jumping off point to explore the Dalmatian islands.

Zadar, Sibenik, and Trogir are beautiful medieval towns just made for wandering. All three towns are vision realized in stone.

town of Zadar

Kotor Montenegro is a stunning town, perched on the breathtaking Bay of Kotor. It’s a long day trip from Dubrovnik, but completely worth the time and effort.

Here’s how to spend one week in Croatia:

  • Day 1 : Explore Dubrovnik
  • Day 2 : Explore Dubrovnik
  • Day 3 : Day Trip to Kotor Montenegro
  • Day 4 : Drive from Dubrovnik to Split and explore Split
  • Day 5 : Day Trip to Zadar and Sibenik
  • Day 6 : Day Trip to Trogir or to Mostar in Bosnia & Herzegovina
  • Day 7 : Ferry to Hvar Island or Take an Island Hopping Tour

the UNESCO-listed Plitvice Lakes National Park in Croatia

More time in Croatia?

Take a day trip to Krka National Parks or spend a night in the amazing UNESCO-listed Plitvice National Park. Plitvice Lakes is a must visit destination for nature lovers.

The gorgeous park is full of vibrant colors. It boasts turquoise water, terraced lakes, stunning viewpoints, and photogenic waterfalls. You’ll be stunned at the breathtaking technicolor views at every turn.

the beautiful town of Ljubljana, capital of Slovenia

2. Itinerary #2: One Week in Slovenia

Tiny overlooked Slovenia is one of Europe’s most charming and delightful off the radar destinations. It’s a gravely beautiful land of imposing green mountains, shimmering glacial blue lakes, and medieval towns.

Slovenia is every bit as beautiful as its neighbors like Croatia. But it has an independent spirit and slightly different charm all of its own. Slovenia also lacks the crowds and high prices of other European countries.

In this one week Slovenia itinerary, you’ll spend 3 nights in Lujublana, 2 nights in Lake Bled, and 2 nights in Piran.

Tartini Square in Piran Slovenia

Ljubljana is a charming small capital dotted with pretty architecture by local hero Jože Plečnik. With a cobbled Old Town clustered around a castle-topped hill, Ljubljana is often likened to Salzburg.

Lake Bled is beautiful. Photos of the iconic lake litter Facebook and Instagram, pop up in travel magazines, and linger in the imagination.

Further west on the Istrian coast, you’ll find charming towns.

Old Town of Ljubljana Slovenia

Here’s the best way to spend one week in Slovenia:

  • Day 1 : Arrive in and explore Ljublana
  • Day 2 : Explore Ljubljana
  • Day 3 : Day Trip to Predjama Cave Castle and Postojna Caves
  • Day 4 : Drive to Lake Bled, stay 2 nights
  • Day 5 : Visit Vintgar Gorge and Lake Bohinj
  • Day 6 : Travel to Piran and explore
  • Day 7 : Day trip to Portorož or Izola

Tickets & Tours : For this Central Europe itinerary, you should consider pre-booking: Ljubljana walking tour and a guided day trip to Lake Bled

the Julian Alps in Slovenia

More Time In Slovenia?

Had north to the Julian Alps. The rugged stone peaks offer hiking galore. The lofty peak of Mt Triglav, at the center of a national park, may even prompt you to attempt an ascent.

You could also head to Trieste Italy. Trieste sits on the Istrian Peninsula at the confluence of Italy, Slovenia, and Croatia. You can explore the opulent Miramare Castle. Or just enjoy the historic center and Italian piazzas.

Alternatively, it’s actually possible to take a day trip to Venice from Ljubljana. It’s probably easiest to go via a tour to eliminate pesky logistics.

3. Itinerary #3: Germany

Germany is a really large country and one week barely scrapes the surface. But if you like city breaks, you can base yourself in Munich and Berlin. You can enjoy these two amazing cities and take some great day trips.

Munich is the prosperous capital of Bavaria. It’s the perfect mix of a cosmopolitan modern city and a historic city center. There’s so much to do in the city of “art and beer.”

Munich is endlessly charming, perfectly walkable, and dotted with candy cane colored buildings. The museums are first rate.

Berlin is Germany’s historic and reunited capital. Berlin is a city of leafy boulevards, grand Neo-Classical buildings, world class museums, and glitzy shopping arcades.

the Reichstag in Berlin Germany

Art lovers could spend days museum hopping on Berlin’s Museum Island. History buffs can immerse themselves in the WWII or Cold War history.

Potsdam is a wonderful day trip from Berlin. Potsdam is strewn with the escapist whimsies of Frederick the Great. During his reign, He built a striking ensemble of grand buildings around Sanssouci Park.

Here’s how to spend one week in Germany exploring:

  • Day 1: Explore Munich
  • Day 2: Explore Munich
  • Day 3: Day Trip to Neuschwanstein Castle
  • Day 4: ICE Train to Berlin (4 hours). If driving, stop in Nuremberg en route
  • Day 5: Explore Berlin
  • Day 6: Explore Berlin
  • Day 7: Day trip to Potsdam

4. Itinerary #4: Munich to Salzburg to Vienna

This is another popular one week road trip route in Germany and Austria. You can experience two cities full of culture — Munich and Vienna.

You’ll be enchanted by enchanting Salzburg. And you can take a nature break in Austria’s stunning UNESCO-listed Wachau Valley.

I’ve discussed Munich, but Vienna is an elegant city well worth your time. Vienna is scattered with Hapsburg palaces — Schönbrunn Palace, Hofburg Palace , and the Belvedere Palace . The museums are out of this world. If you’re a fan of the golden art works of Gustav Klimt, you’ll be in heaven.

The town of Salzburg is a dream worth dreaming, set on the fast flowing Salzach River. It’s studded with elegant domes and spires and crowned with a doughty clifftop fortress. It’s fairytale swoonful, and one of my favorite small cities in Europe.

cityscape of Salzburg Austria

Take in the regal Mirabell Palace, the opulent Residenz, and Salzburg Cathedral. Make the steep (but short) hike up to the well-preserved 900 year fortress, Festung Hohensalzburg. Or take a riverside stroll along Elisabethkai.

With this Germany-Austria itinerary, you’ll spend 2 nights in Munich, 2 nights in Salzburg, and 3 nights in Vienna.

  • Day 2: Explore Munich or Day Trip to Neuschwanstein Castle
  • Day 3: Travel to Salzburg and stop at Herrenschiemsee Palace en route
  • Day 4: Explore Salzburg
  • Day 5: Travel to Vienna and Explore Vienna
  • Day 6: Explore Vienna
  • Day 7: Day Trip to Wachau Valley

More time in Vienna? Day Trip To Bratislava Slovakia

Bratislava is a popular and easy day trip from Vienna, just an hour away. Bratislava is the tiny capital of Slovakia. It’s a little over an hour from Vienna.

Vintage-y Bratislava is filled with pastel colored houses, quirky sculptures, and the world’s most adorable pastry shop, Konditorei Kormut.

Even better, Bratislava is crowned with a historic castle, which is really the iconic spot in the town. Perched on a small hill and about a 15 minute hike, the castle is the best viewpoint of the old town.

Outside, it’s an elegant vision, with Gothic and Renaissance elements. Inside, there’s a museum of history.

the Grand Canal in Venice

5. Itinerary #5: Ventian Empire Tour: Venice to Rovinj to Piran

Do you like a little water with your one week in Central Europe itinerary? Take a Venetian Empire tour. With this itinerary, you’ll visit three countries — Italy, Croatia, and Slovenia — with Venetian themed towns.

Venice is the most unique city in the world. It’s an almost physical and mystical experience when you see Venice for the first time. The glimmering watery streets are right is front of you. Venice defies logic; it’s a city that almost shouldn’t exist.

Venice has a fascinating history. The Republic of Venice became a maritime power. Venice built a little empire on the Adriatic coast in places like Croatia and Slovenia. This produced some “little Venice replicas” like Rovinj and Pirann.

READ : History of Venice in a Nutshell

Rovinj Croatia

Here’s how you can spend a Venetian-themed one week in Central Europe:

  • Day 1 : Explore Venice
  • Day 2 : Explore Venice
  • Day 3 : Day trip to the islands Murano and Burano
  • Day 4 : Ferry to Rovinj
  • Day 5 : Explore Rovinj
  • Day 6 : Drive to Piran, stop in Koper en route
  • Day 7 : Explore Piran

This itinerary has you spending 3 nights in Venice, 2 nights in Rovinj, and 2 nights in Piran.

From Venice, you take the ferry and zip across to Croatia’s Istrian Peninsula, where you can indulge in white and black truffles as you sunbathe.

Spend a couple of nights in the coastal town of Rovinj. Rovinj is charming city that mixes Italian and Croatian influences. Then move on to the towns of Koper and Piran in Slovenia, which are utterly charming Venetian-inspired towns.

Piran Slovenia

Tickets & Tours : For this itinerary, you may want to pre-book the following: Venice walking tour , Venice gondola ride , ticket for St. Mark’s Basilica .

Head to the small charming capitol of Ljubljana for a couple days. Ljubljana is a lovely small capital city.

As I mentioned above, the small city is filled with playful architecture and has a robust cafe culture. There are really no marquis must see sites in Ljubljana. It’s more about the laid back European experience.

the iconic Charles Bridge in Prague

6. Itinerary #6: One Week in Prague, Vienna, and Budapest

This Central Europe itinerary takes you to some of the region’s greatest hits. The cities of Prague, Vienna, and Budapest all boast rich histories, stunning architecture, showstopper medieval town squares, and culinary delights.

Prague is one of the world’s most beautiful cities. It’s synonymous with over-the-top romance and evocative Old World charm. Having escaped the bombings of the big wars, it’s a historic and well-preserved wonder.

Vienna is such a fancy city, a beautiful open air museum really. It’s awash in imperial palaces, grand Baroque architecture, and seriously swoonful museums. The UNESCO-listed buildings create the city’s distinctive look.

the parliament building in Budapest

Beautiful Budapest has a romantic and exotic reputation. It’s a key stop on the vaunted Danube River, a hot European city break, and dubbed the “Paris of the East” and the “Pearl of the Danube.”

Budapest is picturesquely divided in two by the Danube, with Buda on the west and Pest on the east.

It has a sense of expansive grandeur, and opulent interiors from the bygone Austro-Hungarian Empire era. Both sides of the city have different personalities and offer different cultural experiences.

the pretty town of Cesky Krumlov

Here’s how to spend one week visiting these beautiful cities in Central Europe:

  • Day 1 : Explore Prague
  • Day 2 : Explore Prague
  • Day 3 : Drive (or train) to Vienna, stop at Cesky Krumlov en route
  • Day 4 : Explore Vienna
  • Day 5 : Explore Vienna
  • Day 6 : Drive (or train) to and explore Budapest
  • Day 7 : Explore Budapest

In this itinerary, you’ll base in Prague (2 nights), Vienna (3 nights), and Budapest (2 nights).

Tickets & Tours : For this 7 day Central Europe itinerary, you should consider booking: Vienna highlights walking tour , Prague walking tour , guided day trip to Cesky Krumlov , Budapest Danube River cruise .

7. Itinerary #7: One Week In Bavaria Germany

The idyllic region of Bavaria is located in southern Germany. To me, the word “Bavaria” conjures dreamy visions of half-timbered houses clad in flowers and majestic castles piercing blue skies.

This one week Bavaria itinerary has you spending 3 nights in Munich and 4 nights in Nuremberg (a fantastic base for exploring Bavaria).

I’ve covered Munich above. Nuremberg is a magical stunner of a city, with munchable gingerbread and tasty bratwurst.

Nuremberg is multi-faceted, with a tumultuous past. As a former imperial city and medieval stronghold, it’s got layers of history, some of it a dark and brooding Nazi-infused variety. That duality is part of Nuremberg’s allure.

cityscape of Nuremberg

Bavaria is also scattered with adorable small towns. For this itinerary, I recommend visiting Rothenburg ob der Tauber (perhaps Germany’s prettiest city), Bamburg, and /or Regensburg.

All will deliver a heady dash of quaint fairytale charm with half timbered home and flower boxes.

Here’s how to spend one week in Bavaria Germany:

  • Day 1 : Arrive and explore Munich
  • Day 2 : Explore Munich
  • Day 3 : Day Trip to Neuschwanstein Castle and/or Linderhof Palace
  • Day 4 : Drive to Nuremberg, stopping in Augsburg or Dinklesbuhl (or both) en route
  • Day 5 : Explore Nuremberg
  • Day 6 : Day Trip to Rothenberg ob der Tauber
  • Day 7 : Day Trip to Bamberg or Regensburg

City Hall in Vienna. Austria

8. Itinerary #8: One Week in Austria

Tiny landlocked Austria is a beautiful country. It has a lot to offer for lovers of nature, history, and beautiful cities.

Austria boasts alpine scenery, world class museums, cobbled quaintness, and Wiener schnitzel. Unlike Germany, its industrious neighbor to the northwest, Austria is content to bask in its opulent past as the former home of the Hapsburg dynasty.

This one week Austria itinerary has you spending 4 days in Vienna, 1 day in Hallstatt, and 2 days in Salzburg.

  • Day 1 : Explore Vienna
  • Day 2 : Explore Vienna
  • Day 3 : Explore Vienna, half day trip to Schonnbrunn Palace
  • Day 4 : Day Trip to Bratislava or the Wachau Valley
  • Day 5 : Drive to Hallstatt, overnight in Hallstatt
  • Day 6 : Drive to Salzburg, explore and overnight there
  • Day 7 : Another day in Salzburg or day trip to Mondsee and Passau

More Time After Salzburg?

The best thing to do in head into Germany and enjoy some of Bavaria. You could move to Munich and base there for a few days.

Or, if you don’t want a big city, you could stay in Salzburg and day trip to other cute towns like Passau, Landshut, Berchtesgaden, and Konigsee.

the route was had a good amount of variety. The guide did an amazing job even though she was on her own. The company needs to better communicate hotel changes since I had booked extra nights in Budapest and had to move hotels.

Prague Vienna and Budapest (10 Days)

This tour met and exceeded all our expectations! Our tour guide Sasha Rojnik was flawless. He was personable, knowledgeable and always available to give advice about places to eat, things to do in our free time and ways to get around. Our tour didn’t seem as rushed as previous tours because we stayed in each hotel three nights. Included tours, optional tours and free time were available so that we were able to see all major sites, experience museums, concerts and local restaurants and still shop the Christmas markets. There were many photo opportunities so we weren’t seeing the sights through the bus window. The weather was cold, but we were prepared. Our only complaint would be that all the hotels were extremely hot with no way to adjust the temperature. We are retired, but traveled with our adult children and we all enjoyed the tour.

Hi Europamundo has designed very good tour itineraries but it totally depends on the interest of he tour guides on that day or trip. We found most of the guides not interested to give the best value for the guests, to give you an example our tour guide was giving least time at places of tourist importance and giving extra time at stops of service stations where he is relaxing . Everyone was disturbed as he was rushing us at places of tourist importance and within 30 mins of leaving town he says 1 hour break at service station. Please from now on give instructions that maximum time should be allocated for tourist purpose. Rwegards Ravi

The tour was good but if you're looking for a tour with one guide and the same group - forget about it. People around you will be changing constantly as well as guides. If you're ready for this challenge - go on. And be prepared for 2 languages groups even if you have choose the 1 language.... I had 4 guides during this 11 days and would like to say my special thank you for Emma - the best guide you can imagine. Her bubbly personality, her professionalism will make your trip unforgettable. Sorry Maria and Majid - guys, I enjoyed your company but Emma - just over the top.

Prague, Vienna & Budapest Tour

Prague, Vienna & Budapest

I was so hoping that this tour operation would work well for us, as it had the elements we are looking for ie Land transportation details all looked after, taxis, trains and shuttle to and from airport. Perfect. Breakfast every day was included, leaving us to consume other meals when and where we wanted to.Perfect. One half day tour in each city we visited, to get our bearings, and then leaving us alone for the remainder of the time to wander and discover. Perfect. Accommodation, BASIC (the room in Vienna looked/felt more like a dorm room) and clean, was far away from anywhere we wanted to be, ie far from the historical areas and interesting sites. For this reason, alone, we will not use this tour service again. A traveller needs to be central to the sights and sounds of the city (ie NOT the sounds of the tram going by every 15 mins as was the case in Vienna- windows had to be open, as there were no controls for the heating in the room, and it was HOT in March.)

Majestic Europe and Magical Spain

Even though I don't regret doing this tour since it saved us a lot of hassle heaving our heavy luggage around when travelling between cities as well as troubles navigating, you won't get good value for money. We only had one meal with the group, which made it more difficult to make friends and really bond with everyone in the tour. The main let down for me was how little the price included- we had to pay entry for the majority of locations, and the tour guides doesn't even walk us around locations, they just dropped us off, gave a few tips on where to go and then we were left to roam by ourselves. Considering the price, entrance to the Sagrada Famillia would definitely shouldve been included. The bus was really comfortable but driving took the whole day so we should've taken the train instead.

What people love about Europe Tours from Prague

The tour was very well organise and managed but what really mad it extra special was our guide Greg. His passion and love for what it does carries through out the entire journey. He communicated very well managing everyone’s expectations always, knew his subject and had always valuable tips and info for each place we visited. There is no doubt this tour was a success greatly because of his input attention to details and high energy!
We had seen the places that was in the itinerary. The tour guides were good at what they do. Overall, we had a wonderful trip. Thank you tour radar and europamundo. I hope to schedule another family trip in the future.

Croatia is a fast-growing European travel destination, as Americans are becoming turned on to a destination that Europeans have visited for decades. It has some of the most popular beaches in Europe, with the numerous islands offshore considered to offer the best beaches. Croatia is also well-known for its history and geographic beauty. Croatia also offers to the tourist opportunities for outdoor activities such as hiking, kayaking, and mountain climbing at their many national parks such as Plitvice Lakes. Croatia also offers tourists the opportunity to learn about its history by visiting its many walled cities (such as Dubrovnik, Trogir, and Korcula), Roman-era buildings (of which Diocletian`s Palace is perhaps the best-known), and religious buildings such as Zagreb Cathedral in the country`s exquisite capital.

Czech Republic

The Czech Republic is perhaps best-known for its beautiful capital, Prague, although it is known for much more, such as its numerous castles and châteaux (over 1,200 of them!). It is also well-known for having some of the most delicious food and drink in Europe, in particular its wines and famed Pilsner-style beer. The Czech Republic has and had a very long Jewish tradition, which is triumphantly on display after the horrors and loss of World War II in such places as the Great Synagogue in Plzen, the third-largest in the world. Finally, the Czech Republic is well-known for its museums, educating visitors on everything from history and art to folk arts and crafts and even life in the former Communist Czechoslovakia.

Perhaps the first thing you think of when you think of Hungary is its delicious cuisine; after all, it is the country that gave us goulash and fisherman`s soup. It is also known the world over for its 1,000-year historical tradition which bred strong folk traditions. Hungary is also known for its spring and summer festivals, its thermal spas, stunning and varied architectural styles befitting `the crossroads of Europe`, and some of the most gorgeous scenery you will find on the continent. Be sure to visit the charming capital of Budapest, split by the Danube, and then travel further afield to Transdanubia and the Great Hungarian Plain.

Trip Summary

croatia budapest prague tour

Two cities in one! Buda on a hill, historical part of the city and Pest on a plain its shops and boulevards both separated by the Danube flowing between them and connected by magnificent bridges. Budapest looks its most beautiful at dawn, yet it is also spectacularly appealing at night. With a unique, youthful atmosphere, a world-class classical music scene as well as a pulsating night life and an exceptionally rich offering of natural thermal baths, Budapest is one of Europe`s most delightful and enjoyable cities. This is a vibrant city: it throbs with life morning, noon and night; a remarkable and wholly unpretentious place. Visit and explore the Buda Hill and the Castle District, Parliament, the Chain Bridge, Heroes' Square, St. Stephen's Basilica, the Opera House, Matthias Church, Fisherman's Bastion, Gellert Hill, the thermal baths and so much more.

Rows of steeples stacked on onion domes pierce the sky, earning Prague the name 'The City of a Thousand Spires'. Prague has stood the test of time: 1,000 years of art and architecture have collided with power politics and religious conflicts. New shops and restaurants have opened, expanding the city's culinary reach far beyond tradition. The arts and theater are thriving in the 'new' Prague. The arts of the new era possess a distinctive Czech flavor. All of this frenetic activity plays well against a stunning backdrop of towering churches and centuries-old bridges and alleyways. Explore Prague Castle, Charles Bridge, Old Town Square and the Astronomical Clock, Wenceslas Square, the Jewish Quarter and so much more!

Dubrovnik is aptly surnamed the 'Pearl of the Adriatic.' It is one of the most beautiful cities on the Croatian coast. Many buildings in the old city center testify of its glorious past and its Venetian influence. The ancient walls of Dubrovnik girdle a perfectly preserved complex of public and private, sacred and secular buildings representing all periods of the city's rich history, beginning with its founding in the 7th century. In 2019, Dubrovnik celebrates 40 years of being listed on UNESCO's register of World Heritage Sites. Nowadays, Dubrovnik is a tranquil touristic and cultural center hosting many musical, art and theater events year round. Explore the Dubrovnik's Old Town, Lapad, Babin Kuk, Gruz, Church of St. Blaise, Dubrovnik Cathedral, Fort Bokar, Fort Imperial, Minceta Tower, Fort of St. John, Lokrum Island, Rector's Palace, Luza Square, Pile Gate, Ploce Gate, and so much more.
