The Gecko Tour

The gecko tour: revolutionary change and evolutionary diversity.

It is justifiably described as "Europe's premier winter circuit" but in recent months The Gecko Tour has raised the bar to an even more impressive level - certainly when it comes to the diversity of its fields and star performers.

Since the sixth season of the Costa del Sol-based circuit was launched in October 2016, under new ownership, the podiums have included veteran pros recapturing their winning form of previous years, young colleagues fine-tuning their games in a quest to qualify for Europe's main tours, teenage amateurs (and potential stars of the future) testing and honing their skills in the fiercely competitive cauldron of the paid ranks, and hugely talented women golfers mixing it with the men on the same fairways.

Among the champions this year (the tour concludes with the championship final at Finca Cortesín from 5 to 7 March) are 17-year-old Danish amateur Anders Emil Ejlerson and 18-year-old Finnish amateur Sami Valimaki; Marbella-born Ladies European Tour player Noemí Jiménez; José Luis Gross, a part-time pro with a day job in Málaga as a dentist; Mariano Galiano from the La Cañada club, who has won this season as a fledgling pro and the previous one as an amateur; and European Challenge Tour player Sam Connor from England. Highlighting the cosmopolitan nature of the tour, and its appeal for golfers keen to escape the chilly and wet winter climes of their northern home bases, there have also been Swedish, Scottish and Northern Irish winners, as well as an Argentinean.

Even elite Czech Republic athlete Roman Šerble has teed up on the tour - comprising two 36-hole events most weeks, at top courses along the Coast from east of Málaga to Sotogrande - albeit so far without adding to his nine decathlon gold medals in the European Championships, World Championships and Olympic Games (Athens).

As Tour announced at the start of this season, implementing a series of "revolutionary" changes aimed at enabling it to boost its progress in 2016-17, "The Gecko has conjured up a perfect mix of seniority and youth. Experienced players commit to the tour to stay in form, compete against talented young golfers and re-open the door to - why not - the European Tour... In addition, the Gecko has become a perfect launching pad and test for those talented youngsters who want to climb into the elite and need to train in winter. Where better than under the Costa del Sol sun? They come from throughout Europe, ready to beat the world."

Gecko Tour Grand Finale at Finca Cortesín

The sixth season of The Gecko Tour draws to a conclusion next week with a pro-am and championship final at Finca Cortesín from 5 to 7 March. The last three events of the main season, which began in November and has included 22 tournaments (apart from the final), produced three new winners on Europe’s premier winter circuit.

Málaga-born Leo Lilja (24) secured his first professional title at San Roque’s New Course, having joined the paid ranks two years ago after winning the pitch and putt Spanish championship three years in a row. His three-over total in windy weather conditions was two strokes better than second-placed Darren Walkley, while Sam Connor (second in the order of merit) finished another shot back in third place.

Twenty-five-year-old Julie Aimé became just the second woman to win on The Gecko Tour (after Marbella’s Noemí JimAtalayaAtlñata in January)man to win on The Gecko Tour (after le Sam Connor finished another shot back in third place. ars in a énez at Atalaya in January), carding three birdies on the last five holes at La Quinta for a total of 138 and her own first pro title. Good friend Camille Chevalier, who suggested she compete on the tour, finished joint second three strokes back, level with Luke Johnson, Mike Bedford and Ryan Fricker.

Scotland’s Clarke Lutton (29) won the penultimate event at Calanova with a 36-hole total of seven-under, beating runner-up Jean Luc Burnier (Switzerland) by one shot, with Scott Fernández and Alex Belt joint third (the latter concluding with a superb second round 64).

Sweden’s Andreas Andersson is the current leader of the Gecko order of merit heading to the final tournament of the season.

I was just wondering if anyone knew more about this tour. I just discovered it and there is a tournament in progress right now and there are several AMs playing shooting between 95-107.....Whats this tours deal? It looks like the winning scores arent terrible and the money is typical for a mini-tour but why do they allow these dusters to enter? Is it a pro and am tour?

I don't know the specifics but I think events are mostly played during the winter when it's too cold to play in northern Europe. There's the occasional Challenge Tour player trying to stay sharp during the off-season but most are mini tour pro's, pro's who're just starting out and amateurs who're thinking about turning pro in the near future. I'm pretty sure they'll let anyone play as long as you pay the fee though, which probably explains the triple digit scores.

Almost anyone can play in any mini tour event, most tours are hurting for money so they will let anyone play in them whether they shoot 60 or 100.

PLA YER TESTIMONIALS

‘’Had some lower back issues so went to see Isy at Elite Performance Therapy and after 2 sessions she has sorted my back out and can now work on my leg issues. Highly recommend using Elite.’’ Mike Browne

‘’Very highly recommended, absolutely great therapy, helped in more ways than I could’ve imagined. My game has been elevated to the next stage, so happy I found Isy at Elite Performance Therapy.’’ James Ashfield

‘’Highly recommend!!! Isy is a true professional in what she does! Tried to go with me through all the details that could help her find the problem! Therapy was great and I felt way better after treatment! Great meeting and looking forward to our next session! Thank you very much, Isy!’’ Stanislav Matus

We all understand that golf is very physically demanding. An effective golf swing requires strength, stability, explosive power, flexibility and athletic ability to perform a movement that produces some of the fastest club head and ball speeds of any sport. The effect of these repeated large forces on the body can lead to many different types of injuries, which are often specific to certain areas and sides of the body in golfers, depending on their lead side. From lower back pain , tennis elbow to rotator cuff/shoulder injuries, Elite Performance Therapy help players to relieve pain and improve overall performance.

Perfect for relaxing

We loved our stay here. We had an amazing pool and sun bed on our balcony but enjoyed the poolside location also. The staff was helpful, attentive and friendly. We got so lazy we didn't even take advantage of the daily yoga classes or free padel boards and kayacks. The beach in front of the hotel Read more [SPLIT] Read less was small but beautiful. I would definilty reccommend Gecko Hotel. There were guests with small children (well behaved) but I wouldn't reccomend it for families, kids won't enjoy being kids there.

Editoral Review of Geckos Adventures

Geckos, a sister company of Intrepid Travel, focuses on the “young, adventurous, and penniless.” They say they do the “hard haggling” for you so you can save money and enjoy yourself more on your trip.

What Makes Them Stand Out?

Geckos is adventure travel for the young, budget-minded traveler, with an eye toward responsible travel. This means traveling in small groups, mostly averaging 9 passengers, and never over 15. With Geckos Adventures, you can really ‘run wild’ as you explore a destination in a small group environment.

Who Travels With Them?

Most of Geckos’ small-group trips are now strictly for 18-29 year olds who are willing to step outside their comfort zones. Namely, they’re happy to ride public transport, bed down in family-run places, and want plenty of free time. Geckos stresses that their trips are for “travelers, not tourists.” Some “All Age” trips are offered for those who are “young at heart” but over 40. Groups are somewhat geographically diverse, but the majority of travelers hail from Australia and New Zealand.

Where Do They Operate?

Geckos offers a huge variety of exciting global destinations, with 200+ trips across all seven continents. The company is perhaps best known for its South-east Asia trips to places like Thailand, Cambodia, and Laos.

How Does it Work?

Geckos aims to keep its prices on the lower side, but this doesn’t mean skimping on experience. Accommodations are all locally owned and can range from shared guesthouses, to homestays, to an overnight train. As Geckos says, its hotels are always “cheap and cheerful” and “clean, comfortable, and centrally located.” Prices include some meals and some activities, a knowledgeable local guide, and all forms of transport (usually local, and anything from buses to bikes, trains to ferries, cable cars to camels).

Why Travel With Them?

Geckos is a good choice if you’re between the ages of 18-39 and looking for a fun, cheap, no-frills, and authentic adventure. Geckos itineraries provide plenty of free time and flexibility, plus the ability to budget more on the ground instead of paying for activities ahead of time. Additionally, Geckos will arrange a private tour geared to your own interests. Repeat customers get discounts on subsequent trips – and if you turn 40 in the meantime, and are no longer eligible for Geckos, you can apply the discount to an Intrepid trip.

About the company.

At Geckos we’ve taken the dorkiness out of group travel. You’ll snack on the tastiest grub, hang out with people your own age (18-29) and clamber aboard public transport, sleep in family run places, see stuff other tourists never knew existed and have plenty of free time along the way.

We tread lightly, think local and make sure our trips are helping not hindering the places we visit. Plus, our local leaders are rad humans.

If you’ve got an open mind, a sense of adventure and are willing to step outside your comfort zone then you’ll fit right in. We’re for travellers who aren’t afraid to order off the local menu, jump in a tuk-tuk or take a punt on a new friend.

We reckon everyone should be able to see this great world, so we make sure our trips don’t cost the earth (literally and metaphorically). We make sure you see more awesome stuff, stay in more awesome places and eat more awesome things for your hard earned dollar.

We’ve done all the hard haggling for you, and because you’re travelling with a gang of friends, the cost is shared. We love you and we want to take you on the trip of a lifetime, whatever your budget.

When you’re travelling with a small group, you’ll get to know your gang of fellow travellers pretty well. Which means you’ll head home with a whole lot of new BFFs, rather than a hundred strange Facebook friend requests.

That’s why we based our Geckos symbol on the Native American crossed arrows. It means friendship. And we are totally down for making new friends.

Our guides are locals and our lodgings are locally owned, keeping profits and skills in the communities. We offset our carbon emissions; we don’t shirk the responsibility by passing the buck to our travellers. And we’ve set up a bunch of community and climate projects, which anyone can get involved in.

Geckos Adventures is committed to investing in the local communities we visit. To ensure we are offering adequate support to a variety of projects, Geckos has partnered with The Intrepid Foundation. Through this partnership, we can offer our travellers a more substantial base for donation and a greater selection of projects to support.

Bioluminescence by boat

Bioluminescence tour by boat paquera.

On your travels to Costa Rica you will encounter many beautiful and wonderful things. In our opinion one of the most spectacular is the natural wonder of bioluminescence in the ocean! Our planet offers privileged locations that feature a mesmerizing natural phenomenon when the ocean lights up during very dark nights.  Produced by high concentrations of light-emitting plankton, bioluminescence imbues the waters with a starry night effect.  Bioluminescence is found in many parts of the world, however in most locations it is either seasonal or requires perfect conditions in order to occur. Contrastingly, the Paquera Bay is home to bioluminescence year-round. That's why, we think that a bioluminesce tour in Paquera is a most do! We would like to inform you that the moonlight effects the visibility from the bioluminescence an also tides and streamings. Therefore, we are not able to guarentee a good visibility of the bioluminescence in the last week before fullmoon and the day of full moon.

At sunset, this tour leaves from the little beach next to the ferry dock in Paquera. When the nights falls you will be able to see the plankton glow in the dark. For more then a full hour you will be able to see this natural phenomenon and be enchanted how fish light up their path like shooting stars in the water or when you take a swim or move your hands through it.
