How far is Durban from Cape Town, and how long will the road trip take?

The quickest way to drive from Cape Town to Durban takes around 18 hours, but you'll miss out on some amazing sights if you just stick to the highway, so we've put together two great alternatives.

The Drakensberg Route from Cape Town to Durban takes about 25 hours to drive, covering a distance of 1,930 kilometres, but with its mountain landscapes and vineyard views, you'll hardly notice the additional distance.

Best road trip route from Cape Town to Durban

Whether you travel inland or via the coast on your road trip from Cape Town to Durban, you'll be immersed in breathtaking experiences along the way.

As we've mentioned, the Drakensberg Route majors on South Africa's winelands and mountain views. As you leave Cape Town, you'll pass through Paarl, Worcester, and Montagu before reaching Oudtshoorn in the Little Karoo, where stunning vineyards stretch out between lush green mountain slopes.

Your journey continues through the vast, rolling hills of the semi-desert Karoo before you enjoy the sweeping view from the top of the Swartberg Pass. Approaching Underberg, you'll also see the southern Drakensberg mountains and the spectacular Sani Pass.

As you might expect, the Coastal Route exchanges mountain passes for ocean lookouts. The route skirts the Atlantic Ocean at first as you head southeast from Cape Town, passing through picturesque coastal towns nestled between the sea and the hills.

After visiting the southernmost tip of the African continent at L'Agulhas, you'll join the famous Garden Route, which follows the coast of the Indian Ocean. With stunning beaches, vibrant coastal towns, and extensive tracts of temperate indigenous rainforests, this is one of the many highlights of the trip.

Continuing on towards Durban, you'll enter the Eastern Cape and the Transkei, the homeland of the Xhosa people. This rural area is dotted with traditional clay houses and roaming cattle.

You also have the option to take a detour along the Wild Coast and explore coastal towns like Cintsa and Coffee Bay before arriving at your destination, Durban.

Drakensberg Route

From your starting point in Cape Town, you'll begin by heading northeast towards Paarl, where you can visit the Afrikaans Language Monument. From here, it's a stunning drive through the mountains to reach Worcester.

Next, you will head towards Montagu, a town known for its preserved historical buildings. Carrying on along the R62, you'll be immersed in mile after mile of colourful countryside as far as Oudtshoorn before turning left to reach Prince Albert via the Swartberg Pass.

You can enjoy dramatic views across the rugged landscape of the high mountains from the Swartberg Pass, but the gravel road is narrow and has steep drop-offs.

For a more straightforward drive, you can also reach Prince Albert by making your way back to the N1 after visiting Montagu. From the N1, turn onto N407 and continue on the main route from Prince Albert.

The journey continues through Klaarstroom, De Rust and Willowmore before turning north towards Graaff-Reinet. If time allows, spend some time in Camdeboo National Park. Alternatively, you can make a short detour on the R58 to Aliwal North, known for its Anglo-Boer War Blockhouse.

Take the turn towards Faview to visit the Ongeluksnek Nature Reserve, then return to the R56 and continue towards Underberg, a great base for exploring the Drakensberg mountain range, and continue on to Beersheba before arriving in Durban.

Coastal Route (via the Garden Route)

Start your coastal adventure from Cape Town by heading towards Strand and then to the picturesque Groenlandberg Nature Reserve. You'll soon reach Hermanus - if you're lucky, you can spot majestic Southern Right Whales from the viewpoint here.

Further along the road you'll come across the African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary near Gansbaai. The journey then takes you to the southernmost tip of Africa, Cape Agulhas, where the Indian and Atlantic Oceans meet.

From here, make your way back to the N2 at Swellendam, home to the Bontebok National Park. Continuing along the scenic route, you'll get the opportunity to visit the Point of Human Origins near Mossel Bay before hopping on the famous Garden Route.

Following Garden Route, you'll arrive in Knysna and then a short drive will take you to Plettenberg Bay and the Robberg Peninsula. Continuing along the Garden Route, you'll reach Jeffreys Bay before arriving in Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth).

Next, the route takes you through Port Alfred and East London, where the Ann Bryant Art Gallery showcases South African Art, on the way to Port Shepstone. From here you'll take the final stretch of the N2, which follows the coast to your destination, Durban.

Top 4 airlines serving from cape town to durban.

It was a great experience , it was quick and on time

this route is more expensive than you would expect. Boarding, disembarking was easy and fast. Cabin crew was friendly. Seats are small

The meal was excellent and well suited to a short journey.

Original flight was delayed due to technical issue. Very poor communication. The manager only appeared when we were climbing on board the plane. This resulted in us missing our follow on flight also with Airlink. No ticket issued from Skukuza and no assistance when we landed to address the issue. We had to make our own arrangements and go to their sales desk. Again they had no knowledge of the flight delay and of any passengers that had connecting flights. The lady (unfortunately with all the STRESS I have forgotten her name) at the counter was extremely helpful and is an excellent example of the type of employee Airlink need to promote and employ. Our luggage was in limbo due to all the missing information and assistance. We had to resort to buying extra tickets from South African Airways who were extremely helpful. I work at an airport so am familiar with its workings. I will infuture be looking for alternative flights.

Airline is the best airline experience I’ve ever had.

My flight was good no comments Crew members were good Flight on schedule even earlier at some point Thanks

Easy boarding, smooth flight, friendly and helpful attendants. As with every other airline, there isn't enough leg room to be comfortable. Food was adequate.

Easy short flight from Johannesburg to Harare. Boarding was slow, flight attendants were friendly. They did a meal service on this short flight, including wine, which was pretty cool.

Flight was moved forward by 2 hours with 3 days notice. This meant I could not connect from flight from Johannesburg. So did not take the flight and drove to Kasane. Will never use Air Botswana unless absolutely necessary. Mark

There was no entertainment, but that is not expected on a flight less than 2 1/2 hours. Uber clean aircraft, good boxed meal and friendly flight attendants. Very please with the experience

Very good experience considering that is low cost company. Good value for money.

Make some provisions for non-disabled elderly people who don't require assistance necessarily but would appreciate not having to walks long distances or stand for prolonged periods of time. For example: Seats close to boarding gates. Not being required to climb down and up stairs to board and deplane if in rows 17 upwards. Not being required to stand in long queues in boarding tunnels waiting to board. Priority fast track through security points to avoid long queues in departure halls.

Great airline. Will use again. Keep up the great work though and maintain your customer retention. And please keep an eye on the bottom line and stay in business for decades to come and grow from strength to strength.

For the first time ever we had a grumpy check in agent. I got told off for not having a lock on my bag and she looked seriously put out that we were checking in as a group of 7. Very unusual as I fly regularly with Safair and all the staff have always been super friendly.

Free or minimal cost water available in recyclable cups on board would be very welcome! Everything else was great!

Seats are small. But I guess that will not change on my behalf. Otherwise their service is great.

Loved our Cabin Crew you could tell they enjoyed there job. The Chief Stuart was a delight. What a great way to start our day with such a positive company.

Plettenberg Bay is a unique airport, so boarding with always have certain quirks. Cemair has zero regard for passengers, and their commitment to adhering to departure times. In two flights we had 3 flight changes, and a 1.5h delay. If you have any kind preceding or follow on plans, do not fly Cemair.

8:20 pm (local time) :   Cape Town International (CPT) Cape Town is the same time as Durban taxi on the runway for an average of 15 minutes to the gate

8:35 pm (local time) :  arrive at the gate at CPT deboard the plane, and claim any baggage if you're renting a car, check if you need to take a shuttle to car rental agency, otherwise you can ride in a cab, limo, or Uber for about 32 minutes to your destination

9:07 pm (local time) :  arrive in Cape Town

Now finally, let's look at an example flight from DUR to CPT and figure out how long it would take to fly including take-off and landing, and time to taxi on the runway.

So now we can finally get an idea of the total travel time from Durban to Cape Town including time spent getting to/from the airports, an estimated wait time of 2 hours at the airport for TSA security lines and waiting at the gate, and the actual flight itself.

Total travel time: 5 hours

How far is Cape Town from Durban? Here's the quick answer if you have a private jet and you can fly in the fastest possible straight line.

Flight distance: 791 miles or 1273 km

Flight time: 2 hours, 5 minutes

Compare this to a whole day of commercial travel with the airports and waiting in line for security, which ends up taking a total of 5 hours, 24 minutes .

Flying private is roughly 2.7x faster , and saves you about 3.5 hours in your total travel time.

Because of the curvature of the Earth, the shortest distance is actually the "great circle" distance, or "as the crow flies" which is calculated using an iterative Vincenty formula. For a long distance, this appears as a curve on the map, and this is often the route that commercial airlines will take so it's a good estimate of the frequent flyer miles you'll accumulate as well.

This is a medium length flight, so unless you have a nice private jet, you might be booking a commercial flight. In that case, your travel time would really need to include how many minutes to get to your local airport, wait for security, board and taxi on the runway, land at the other airport, and get to your destination. The flight itinerary at the top of the page takes into account all these factors to get a more accurate estimate of your actual flight time .

Delta, United & 17 Other International Airlines That Fly To South Africa's 2 Major Airports

  • Johannesburg and Cape Town are South Africa's two busiest airports, receiving millions of international passengers annually.
  • United and Delta offer non-stop flights from the US to South Africa, serving both airports.
  • British Airways and Emirates are top carriers to South Africa from Europe and the Middle East.

South Africa's Johannesburg and Cape Town airports are the two main gateways into the country and are among the busiest airports in Sub-Saharan Africa. They receive millions of international passengers each year, flying in from several destinations worldwide. According to data from Cirium , an aviation analytics company, there are 19 international airlines serving both airports this month, including US carriers United and Delta.

Flights from the US to South Africa

Johannesburg OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) is the primary airport in South Africa, receiving nearly 78% of all international traffic. On the other hand, Cape Town International (CPT) handles about 18% of international traffic, proving an essential gateway to one of the world's most popular tourist destinations. Last year, Cape Town broke its all-time record for international passengers .

United and Delta are currently the only airlines with non-stop passenger flights from the US to South Africa. They serve both Johannesburg and Cape Town, providing five direct routes for South Africa-bound travelers. The other airlines serving both airports are as follows:

United Airlines has an average of 13 weekly flights to South Africa on three routes. It operates daily flights from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) to Johannesburg with the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. It has two routes to Cape Town, with three weekly flights from Newark and three weekly from Washington Dulles (IAD) with its B777s.

Delta Air Lines has up to ten weekly flights from the US to South Africa. It only has two non-stop routes from Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport (ATL). It flies daily to Johannesburg and thrice weekly to Cape Town with the Airbus A350. These are Africa's two longest intercontinental routes .

International airlines serving Johannesburg and Cape Town

British Airways is the top carrier between Europe and South Africa. It has an average of 21 weekly flights from London Heathrow (LHR), serving Johannesburg twice daily with the B777 and A380 and Cape Town daily with the A350. During winter, it had up to 31 weekly flights , with a third route from London Gatwick (LGW) to Cape Town.

Emirates has the most flights from the Middle East to South Africa. It operates three daily flights to Johannesburg with its B777 and A380 fleet. Along with British Airways, they are the only two airlines flying the superjumbo to Africa . In addition to its Johannesburg service, the Dubai-based carrier flies twice daily to Cape Town and daily to Durban, making it one of the few international airlines serving South Africa's three major airports.

Most of the airlines on the list operate non-stop flights to Johannesburg and Cape Town. However, there are a few exceptions, including Kenya Airways, RwandAir, and Singapore Airlines. While Kenya Airways provides non-stop flights to both airports, some of its Cape Town flights are operated via Victoria Falls and Livingstone.

RwandAir also has a non-stop service to South Africa, but some Johannesburg flights are operated via Lusaka (LUN), while Cape Town flights have a stop in Harare (HRE). On the other hand, Singapore Airlines has non-stop flights from Changi Airport (SIN) to Johannesburg, available up to 10 times a week. However, its Cape Town flights are operated daily via Johannesburg.

Flights to all three major airports.

In addition to Johannesburg and Cape Town, Durban King Shaka International Airport (DUR) serves as South Africa's third international gateway. As of April 2024, only five international airlines are flying to all three airports: Emirates, Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines, Proflight Zambia, and Eswatini Air.

Emirates' daily Dubai-Durban service means it has a total of 42 weekly flights to South Africa, the most of any intercontinental carrier. Qatar Airways currently operates five weekly non-stop flights to Durban, returning via Maputo, while Turkish Airlines operates three weekly flights to Durban via Johannesburg. Southern African carriers Proflight Zambia and Eswatini Air all fly non-stop to Durban from their bases in Lusaka and Manzini, respectively.

TAAG Angola previously announced plans to launch flights to Durban, making it its third South African destination. Last year, the airline told Simple Flying it was awaiting regulatory approval to launch this route. Similarly, as reported by SA people news , Air Mauritius is also planning to add flights to Durban.
