7 Reasons to Visit Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park
Founded in 1925 as Africa’s first national park, Volcanoes National Park in northwestern Rwanda is best known as a sanctuary for the region’s rare mountain gorillas.
And if that’s all the park had to offer, it would be enough. But Volcanoes National Park is also home to golden monkeys, rare birds, stunning crater lakes, and some of the most beautiful scenery imaginable.
Hiking Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda leads to beautiful views of surrounding mountains in the Virunga Range, such as this one of Mount Mikeno in neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo.
Hiking in Volcanoes National Park
Volcanoes National Park is home to five of the eight volcanoes of the Virunga Mountains, a chain formed by the Albertine Rift that runs through the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, and Uganda . This chain is beloved by hikers for its beautiful scenery and unique landscape.
Most of the volcanoes in the park are now extinct, but Bisoke remains active, with its most recent eruption in 1957. Its chances of erupting in any given year are only one in 425, however. Next to gorilla viewing, hiking to the top of Bisoke to see its beautiful crater lake, Lake Ngezi, is one of the most popular activities in the park. Because Bisoke is located toward the center of the Virungas, a visit to its peak offers one of the best views of the mountain chain.
Volcanoes National Park has several other hiking trails that pass through diverse scenery, including bamboo forests, open grassland, swamp, and heath. In addition to the Lake Ngezi trail, hikers can enjoy nature walks on these trails:
- Mount Karisimbi Trail—This trail ascends Africa’s fifth tallest mountain (14,787 feet!). This two-day hike, with overnight camping at an elevation of 12,139 feet, is a fun way to prepare for ascending Mount Kilimanjaro .
- Mount Muhabura Trail—This is a full day hike that offers views of lakes Burero and Ruhondo when you reach the top.
- Mount Gahinga Trail—Mount Gahinga is the shortest mountain in the park. This trail is good for fit people who want to challenge but do not have much experience hiking.
All hikes require an inexpensive permit and an approved guide.

Mountain Gorillas in Volcanoes National Park
Volcanoes National Park is famous for its mountain gorillas. In 1981, only about 250 mountain gorillas were believed to survive in the wild. Today, that number has rebounded to more than 1,000, although they are still considered endangered.
Of the places where mountain gorillas can be seen, Volcanoes National Park is the closest to an international airport. Relative to the park’s size, it also has the most gorilla families that can be seen by visitors.
As of early 2022, Volcanoes National Park has 11 habituated families, according to the International Gorilla Conservation Program . “Habituated” means the gorilla family is in the “habit” of seeing humans and does not mind their presence. These are the mountain gorillas visitors can see on a visit to the park.
To see mountain gorillas, you must purchase a permit in advance of your visit. (If you travel with Ujuzi, we take care of that for you.) A park naturalist guides you through the park to find a habituated gorilla family and spend an hour with these incredible primates in their natural habitat. Read more about gorilla trekking.
Golden monkeys, like this adult and child, are very sociable and live in large groups in Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda.
Golden Monkeys in Volcanoes National Park
Golden monkeys are another prime attraction of the park. These monkeys are found only in the Virunga Mountains, and Volcanoes National Park is the easiest place to see them.
The park offers guided golden monkey treks. These animals are very entertaining to watch. They are highly sociable and hang out in large family groups ranging in size from 30 to about 80—so you are likely not to just see one golden monkey on your trek, but many. Once you find a family group, you spend an hour watching them eat, groom, and play.
Our Rwanda Mountain Gorilla Extension sample itinerary includes a chance to see not only mountain gorillas, the golden monkeys, as well.
White-tailed blue flycatchers are one of the many colorful birds that can be seen in Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda.
Birds and Other Wildlife of Volcanoes National Park
Because much of the park is heavily forested, it can be difficult to spot other mammals. But that makes it all the more delightful when you see one! Keep your eyes peeled for black-fronted duikers, Cape buffalos, bushpigs, spotted hyenas, and bushbucks.
More than 170 bird species have been recorded at the park, and 13 of these are only found in the Virunga and Rwenzori Mountains. Rare birds you might find here include Lagden’s bushshrike and the Kivu ground thrush. Other notable birds include the white-tailed blue flycatcher, scarlet-chested sunbird, and gray-crowned crane.
Studies of these birds’ behavior and habitat helps scientists understand the effect of climate change on the Volcanoes National Park and how it may impact mountain gorillas and other animals.
Primatologist Dian Fossey was laid to rest in a cemetery for mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park.
Dian Fossey’s Gravesite in Volcanoes National Park
Dian Fossey is widely credited with saving mountain gorillas from extinction when she brought international attention to their plight. She arrived at Volcanoes National Park in 1966 to study the behavior and ecology of mountain gorillas and, the next year, set up the Karisoke Research Center, which was originally located in the park.
In 1985, Dian Fossey was tragically murdered by unknown assailants. She was buried in a small cemetery on the slopes of Mount Karisimbi next to Digit, her closest gorilla friend, who became a victim of poaching in 1977. A hike to this gravesite is a moving experience, but also requires stamina—the trip from park headquarters and back can last three to five hours, depending on the weather. (The hike takes longer in the rain due to muddy and slippery conditions.)
In addition to visiting the gravesite, you will hike through the original site of Karisoke Research Center, much of which was destroyed during the Rwandan genocide of 1994, to see the remains of Dian Fossey’s cabin and the workers’ house and mess hall. The hike is guided by park staff, and a permit is required.
These sample itineraries include an option to hike to Dian Fossey’s gravesite:

Volcanoes National Park
Top choice in Rwanda
Volcanoes National Park, which runs along the border with the DRC and Uganda, is home to the Rwandan section of the Virungas. Comprising five volcanoes, the Virungas are utterly spellbinding and few would argue that this is not one of the most exciting national parks in Africa. We probably needn't remind you, but of all the extraordinary sights and attractions around the Virungas, the one that really draws people here are the famous mountain gorillas.
While most tourists to the park are understandably driven by the desire to have a face-to-face encounter with real gorillas in the mist, there is good reason to stay in the area once you’ve finished tracking: the gorillas share the park with rare golden monkeys, a troop of which has also been habituated to human contact. The Virungas, which tower over Rwanda, Uganda and the DRC, also present a variety of rewarding climbing and trekking options. To get the most from the Virungas give yourself as much time as you possibly can as this is absolutely a park that rewards those who linger.

Why Visit PNV
Volcanoes national park is located in the northwest of Rwanda near the boarders of Uganda and democratic public of Congo. It is situated in a small village called musanze which was previously formally called Ruhengeri as it can be accessed by public transport though Gisenyi or Kigali from the international airport taking 2 hours to reach the gates of volcanoes national park. You will be required to travel at the park very early in the morning take you though the procedures and protocols, requirements needed to do this activity. Hopefully, Gorilla tracking in Volcanoes National Park may even take on the first day of your arrival at the park as it may not even last the all day although some tourists tend to request for an extension of gorilla tracking due its shorten.
When you look back in history, the national park spans around 160square kilometers as it is believed to be the oldest national park in Africa. It was initially in a small area of Karisimbi, Mikeno, and Visoke. It was gazetted for a reason of poaching thus it had reduced the number of animals and revenue that was collected by the government of Rwanda.
In 1929, the park was extended to Rwanda of which Belgian government and Congo were responsible for the park after all, it was named Albert national park for some period of time. During the year 1960, it was divided as Rwanda and Congo were having their independence respectively. By the end of the decade, It was almost half of the original size although between 1990 and 1994, it was turned in to a fighting zone during the genocide which many people died between the wuto and the tusi. In 2005, Rwanda introduced the annual naming of the new young baby ceremony called Kwita Iziina which is done every year in volcanoes national park.
In 1967, American zoologist Dian Fossey as an scientist did some research on these amazing apes (Gorillas) in the forest of Congo who later fled to Rwanda due to the insecurity that had happened in Congo. She later set up a research centre in places of visoke and karisimbi and the research centre was called karisoke research centre. She was strongly against the ideal of poaching of animals which later brought problems to her as she was killed and later was buried near her favorite Gorilla called Digit.
Virunga volcanoes with in national park are among the most desirable inspiring sights to be enjoyed apart from Gorilla tracking as it is has the seven hills surrounded by good scenery of bamboo forests which is possible for tourists to come and see iconic and amazing gorillas.
There are eight habituated Gorilla groups that are living within volcanoes national park namely, Susa made up of 41 gorillas, Sabyingo, Amahoro made up of 17 members, Group 13, Kwitonda made up of 18 members, and Umubaro made up 11 members, hirwa. Etc. Furthermore, Gorilla Tracking is the top tourists’ activity for anyone interested in the national park. But the best period to carry out this activity varies a number of seasons as from June to September and also from December, January and February tend to be dry favoring a number things like movements of both cars driving the tourists towards the park that are made much easier both within and outside the park plus also these primates in the dry months tend not to move a lot in the park because food may not around thus limiting their movements than in the wet periods of March, April, May, which are wet of which in those months, they usually move too much looking for food from highland to lowland areas.
The permits in the dry months of June to September and from December, January and February tend to be on a high demand as compared to the wet seasons thus you may find that in the wet months of touring, permits go as low as all most half of the original price were tourists do request for a double trek because of their low prices. But of lately, 750 dollars is charged to trek this activity. RDM tourism and conservation Reservation office is responsible for issuing of Gorilla permits in the national park. For tourists who want this activity, the best itinerary that would take you mindless is a 3 day Gorilla Safari in volcanoes national park as an English speaking guide will take you through all the groups that will be trekked at that time normally in those morning hours as you will be first entertained by the Kinyarwanda dancers.
Some of the requirement needed to do this safari activity as whole is bringing raincoats, layered clothes to keep you warm, wearing long trousers to prevent insects from biting he tourists plus also bringing water proof back bag which can be used to carry cameras protecting them from damaging the inner parts of the camera after all, a good trusted porter is needed to carry these items as tourists are trekking these primates.
If one wants to stay either within or outside the park to ease the movements of tourists, there are number of lodges that are available having various accommodations rates ranging from luxurious, midrange and then budget accommodations and these include the following; virunga hotel, Home Inn, Ia Palme Hotel, Red rocks Rwanda, Mountain Gorilla Nest Lodge, Sabingo Silver back Lodge. Rent a Safari Vehicle for an Animal-Filled Rwanda Road Trip
R wanda is a true success story for purpose-built redevelopment, and fortunately for travelers, that purpose is tourism— sustainable tourism , to be specific. Over the past decades, the country has focused on infrastructure and the environment, putting huge amounts of funding into developing safe roads, incentivizing local business creation, and protecting and rebuilding national parks . And given that the country is a mere 10,000 square miles (roughly the size of Maryland), it's ripe for bucket-list road trips that include the chance to spot endangered black rhinos and breathe the same clean mountain air as the gorillas made famous by world-famous primatologist Dian Fossey.Driving in Rwanda is completely doable for anyone who's careful and competent behind the wheel, but road tripping through its cities and countryside requires a hearty sense of adventure. Rwanda's roads are a sometimes-hectic mix of bicycles, cars, and motorbikes , and heavy rain can leave older roads muddy and pitted. Fortunately, you can easily hire drivers or take safari tours through parks if you'd rather not venture off the main drag (or if you just want to keep your eyes free to look for rhinos; Akagera National Park has more than 50).
Ready for a road trip in Rwanda? Take advantage of the country’s new and generally smooth roads to hightail it to stunning nature reserves. Our recommended route follows a counter-clockwise loop between the country’s four national parks: the savannah-filled Akagera National Park, high-up Volcanoes National Park, biodiverse Gishwati Mukura National Park, and misty Nyungwe National Park. So just rent a car, turn on some tunes, and prepare to be amazed.
How to rent a car in Rwanda
You'll need to pick your car up at the international airport in Kigali. No matter where you're headed, you should rent an SUV, as many roads through parks are bumpy and only partially paved. But for a unique twist, consider renting a pop-top Land Cruiser, so you can really feel like you’re on a safari.
You'll also need insurance, a US driver's license, and an International Driving Permit . Fortunately, you can get the latter via mail for $20. Don't worry if it seems like a lot; rental companies are used to guiding foreigners through the process.
Best time of year to visit Rwanda
For the best balance of cost, weather, and wildlife spotting odds, split the difference and shoot for March or September. And no matter when you go, pack at least one rain jacket.
Kigali to Akagera National Park
Driving here will be a far cry from the smooth roads you’ve experienced since landing in Kigali. Most of the roads in Akagera are dirt—perhaps bumpy, but easy enough unless there’s been excessively heavy rain. If you’ve noticed the park has recently experienced heavy rainfall, you’ll want to hire a driver or hop out of your own vehicle and into a proper safari vehicle driven by an expert. Fortunately, because the park has relatively few visitors, you can make the decision just a day or two before your arrival.
It takes about three hours on dirt roads to drive through the park from the south gate to the north gate, so if you’d rather not drive yourself through the park, you can stay at Akagera Game Lodge or Ruzizi Tented Lodge , both close to the southern entrance and visitor’s center. From these hotels, you can see about arranging a driver and guide. For those who don’t mind driving and are looking for a more rugged experience, seek out Karenge Bush Camp near the north gate for off-grid glamping (and savannah-view, open-air bathrooms). Lodging should be booked online in advance of arrival.
If you’ve rented a pop-top vehicle and are ready to DIY your own safari, you can hire a naturalist guide to hop in your vehicle, help spot wildlife, and advise on the best route based on rainfall and recent animal sightings. Guides are $40 US for the entire day, or $25 for a half day. You don’t need to make a reservation in advance for this approach, but it can be helpful to ask your hotel to help arrange the guide when you check in. In a pinch, stand-by guides are usually available in the morning at the park’s southern welcome center.
Plan to spend eight to 10 hours in the park—not including sleep time—if you plan on driving an entire loop. And be sure to gas your vehicle up on the way, since there are no gas stations inside Akagera.
Akagera to Volcanoes National Park
And just know this: The five hours are absolutely worth it for the once-in-a-lifetime chance to encounter endangered mountain gorillas. The Virunga Mountains are among the few places left to see these animals in the wild. Thanks to dedicated teams of trackers who follow each of the park's 10 gorilla families, sightings are guaranteed—but be aware that you'll pay for the privilege. At Volcanoes, the cost per person is a cool $1,500, which entitles you to one hour spent observing the gorillas. Only 80 passes are available daily, so reserve online when you book your flights. You won’t pay any additional fees for the experience, aside from optional tips for guides and trackers.
In the morning, you'll meet your guide at the visitor center and get assigned to a gorilla family. Then, you'll pile into your car and drive to your starting point based on where the family was last spotted. Most gorilla trekking excursions start in farmland before crossing into the park boundary, where views of towering 14,000-foot-tall volcanoes give way to macro views of bamboo thickets and creeping vines stretching toward the sun-dappled forest canopy.
Plan to stay at least two nights near the park, both to avoid the need to rush after your hike and to give your mud-covered shoes a chance to dry. We recommend resting your head at Five Volcanoes Boutique Hotel for a mid-range pick, or Bisate if you’d prefer a honeymoon-worthy splurge.
If you find yourself with the afternoon free during your stay, donate $20 to visit the Dian Fossey Museum or Gorilla Guardians Village . The latter is a bit cheesy, but proceeds go back to local villages and fund efforts to keep poachers out of the parks.
Volcanoes National Park to Lake Kivu
Make the short trip to the city of Gisenyi, where you can hop on the smooth and well-marked “ Kivu Belt ” road, completed in 2017. From Gisenyi south, you’ll find plenty of places to stop for smaller adventures, including a locally-owned coffee cooperative and many public beaches along the lake’s eastern shore. Save for the occasional tight turns, the Kivu Belt Road is an especially easy drive.
Near the northern part of the lake, you’ll find Gishwati Mukura National Park —but you're only allowed to visit if you spend at least one night at the Forest of Hope Guesthouse . If you do book a stay, you'll be among the few permitted to take a morning trek in search of the park's famous golden monkeys.
But if the park and the guesthouse don’t appeal, there are other accommodations and activities in the area. Stay at budget friendly Paradise Malahide bungalows, or take in the views from Cleo Lake Kivu . From these hotels, you can explore the region by cycling on the Congo-Nile Trail (a dirt trail through small jungle villages and past hidden waterfalls), or taking an overnight kayaking trip to one of Lake Kivu's many islands. Local outfitter Kingfisher Journeys offers a full menu of single-day adventure tours and multi-day excursions, and can arrange everything from a single-day driver to support your bike ride to camping equipment for an overnight stay on the beach.
Lake Kivu to Nyungwe Forest National Park
You’ll take the Kivu Belt most of the way to the park. The only tricky part of the drive is the last 15 miles to the Uwinka Visitor Center, which climbs about 3,000 feet. However, while the road is steep, it’s also paved and has little bike and pedestrian traffic.
Once you’re settled, you’ll want to strap on your hiking boots and explore the trails. For a relatively short and easy hike, look for Igishigishigi Trail , a roughly three-mile loop leading to a suspension bridge strung up hundreds of feet above a misty valley. As gorgeous as the views are, the bridge is hardly the only thing worth seeing here. Later on, the trail's namesake ferns tower overhead like protective sentinels, casting shadows across the ground and trapping the earthy aroma of the ever-damp rainforest floor.
All activities in Nyungwe require a guide. It’s easiest to have your hotel arrange these for you, but you can also email the park to set things up yourself. Rates for guided tours range from $40-$90 per person for foreign citizens. As far as lodging goes, you can stay in a traditional Rwandan hut at Kitabi Eco-Center , or book the stunning One & Only Nyungwe House to end your trip on a high note. From Nyungwe, it takes about four hours to drive back to Kigali to drop off your rental car and bid farewell to Rwanda. Leave yourself plenty of extra time, as you’ll want to be extra careful on the crowded roads when approaching the city. Arrange to return your car at the airport, or book a hotel (such as the Retreat Kigali , where all rooms have outdoor showers) and give yourself a relaxing buffer day before flying home. QUITO, Ecuador (AP) — A volcano on an uninhabited island in the Galapagos has begun erupting, lighting up the nighttime sky as lava tumbled down its sides toward the sea.
The La Cumbre volcano on Fernandina island began erupting Saturday around midnight in what officials with Ecuador’s Geophysical Institute said could be its largest eruption since 2017. The 1,476-meter (4,842-foot) volcano last erupted in 2020.
Images shared on social media taken by visitors to the Galapagos show the volcano profiled against a crimson red sky.
While the eruption posed no risk to humans, the island is home to a number of species, including iguanas, penguins and flightless cormorants. In 2019, scientists found on the island a giant tortoise not seen in more than a century and had been feared extinct .
The La Cumbre volcano is one of the most active in the Galapagos Island chain, which is famous throughout the world for helping 19th century British scientist Charles Darwin develop his theory of evolution.
