Early life [ ]
Crusher was born as Beverly Howard in Copernicus City on Earth's moon on October 13 , 2324 . ( TNG : " Conundrum ") Her ancestry was from North America , ( TNG : " The High Ground ") although her distant ancestors hailed from Scotland . While Beverly was still a young child, both of her parents were killed. She was raised by her grandmother , Felisa Howard , whom Beverly referred to as "Nana", and who belonged to the noble Howard family, themselves related to the English Dukes of Norfolk. ( TNG : " Sub Rosa ")
Beverly and her grandmother, Felisa
Both Howards were present during the terrible disaster at the Arvada III colony , and it was during this time Felisa learned how to use herbs and roots for medicinal purposes after regular medical supplies had been exhausted. This inspired Beverly to a career in medicine. ( TNG : " The Arsenal of Freedom ") Beverly and Felisa later moved to the Caldos colony , where Felisa became a healer until her death in 2370 . ( TNG : " Sub Rosa ")
Beverly's childhood was mostly happy, though she did go through the same difficulties in making friends and relating to other children that most youngsters experience. ( TNG : " The Offspring ")
As a thirteen-year old, rebellious Beverly changed her hair color to brunette , although she recalled years later that she " couldn't change it back fast enough. " ( TNG : " The Quality of Life ")
In her later teens, Beverly admitted she developed a smart-alack mouth, which often got her into trouble. She brought a date with a young man named Tom Norris to an abrupt end with the question " Is that a beard or is your face dirty? " Beverly later realized that she had really hurt him, and from that point on she was more conscious of others' feelings. ( TNG : " Attached ")
Academy and early Starfleet career [ ]
Jack R. Crusher, shortly after Wesley's birth
Beverly attended Starfleet Academy from 2342 to 2350 . ( TNG : " Conundrum ") During her training, she earned her Doctor of Medicine . ( TNG : " The Loss ")
During this time, she became romantically involved with Jack R. Crusher after being introduced by their mutual friend, Walker Keel . ( TNG : " Conspiracy ") It took months for her to realize their attraction. ( TNG : " The Price ") The two were married in 2348 after Jack proposed to her through a gag gift, a book entitled How to Advance Your Career Through Marriage . ( TNG : " Family ")
Jack later served aboard the USS Stargazer under Picard, and the couple became good friends with the captain. Picard later admitted he had fallen in love with Beverly, but did not ever express his feelings because he felt that doing so would betray his friend. ( TNG : " Attached ")
Almost a year later, the Crushers welcomed a son, Wesley Crusher , in 2348 . ( TNG : " Coming of Age ")
After Beverly graduated in 2350 , she interned with Dr. Dalen Quaice on Delos IV in 2352 . ( TNG : " Remember Me ", " The Loss ")
Crusher in 2354
Jack died on an away mission while serving aboard the Stargazer in 2353 , Picard having been forced to choose between saving another team member or his friend. Picard brought Jack's body home to the grieving Beverly and Wesley. ( TNG : " Encounter at Farpoint ", " True Q ") He also accompanied her to see Jack's body in the morgue at Starbase 32 . Beverly appreciated the gesture despite the fact that Picard felt it would be better for her to remember him alive rather than as a corpse. ( TNG : " Violations ") Beverly never fully recovered from his death. ( TNG : " The Bonding ", " True Q ")
Crusher took the bridge officer's test in 2362 , and was promoted to commander . ( TNG : " Thine Own Self ")
Aboard the USS Enterprise [ ]
The enterprise -d [ ].
Crusher operates on Worf
Dr. Crusher was appointed chief medical officer of the USS Enterprise -D in 2364 , and joined the ship at Farpoint Station with Wesley, ( TNG : " Encounter at Farpoint ") reporting on board on stardate 41154. ( TNG : " Remember Me ") Picard initially had reservations about her presence, but she assured him that the past would have no effect on her duties and she had no problem serving under his command. ( TNG : " Encounter at Farpoint ")
Beverly Crusher in 2367
An energy -based lifeform from the Beta Renner cloud was accidentally trapped aboard the Enterprise later in 2364 . It initially inhabited Lieutenant Worf 's body, but next moved to Crusher. It controlled her for a brief period of time, attempting to learn how to use the Enterprise navigational systems in order to return home. The being then transferred itself to the ship's computer system, then took control of Captain Picard. ( TNG : " Lonely Among Us ")
In mid- 2364 , Captain Picard invited Crusher on a holodeck adventure set in the fictional world of Dixon Hill . They were joined by Data and ship's historian Whalen . Unfortunately, a malfunction in the holodeck systems due to a Jarada scan caused the safeties to become disengaged, trapping the group at the whim of Cyrus Redblock . They were later freed, but not before Redblock shot Whalen and threatened to kill Beverly. ( TNG : " The Big Goodbye ")
Crusher was offered a position as head of Starfleet Medical in 2365 and left the Enterprise during that year. She was replaced by Dr. Katherine Pulaski . ( TNG : " The Child ") While at Starfleet Medical, she worked with the notorious Lieutenant Commander Calvin Hutchinson . ( TNG : " Starship Mine ") Crusher found it difficult to be away, however, and decided to return to the ship the following year. ( TNG : " Evolution ") After his first encounter with Dr. Crusher following her return, Q commented, " Ah, Doctor Crusher. I see Starfleet has shipped you back into exile . " ( TNG : " Deja Q ")
Beverly Crusher, being drawn towards a vortex
Dr. Quaice retired in 2367 shortly after the death of his wife, and the Enterprise -D picked him up at Starbase 133 to ferry him home. Although he was in good spirits, he was slightly saddened at the prospect of facing the future without many of his friends, a feeling Beverly knew all too well. At the same time, Wesley Crusher was experimenting with a novel warp bubble . Beverly became trapped in this bubble, and her thoughts at the time created a universe where everyone and everything quickly began disappearing. With the assistance of The Traveler , Wesley was able to create a gateway back to the normal universe. Dr. Crusher was able to deduce what was happening in her universe, and escaped through Wesley's gateway just before the bubble collapsed. ( TNG : " Remember Me ")
Beverly was questioned in connection with the explosion that crippled the Enterprise 's warp core in 2367 . Her testimony was twisted by Admiral Norah Satie in order to implicate the quarter- Romulan crewman Simon Tarses in the incident, later determined to be an accident. ( TNG : " The Drumhead ")
When the Enterprise entered a temporal causality loop while exploring the Typhon Expanse , Beverly's feelings of déjà vu during a poker game and evidence of temporal phenomena lead to a solution which allowed the ship to break the cycle. ( TNG : " Cause And Effect ")
The senior staff of the Enterprise traveled back to the late 19th century in order to stop Devidian lifeforms from feeding on the neural energy of Humans from that era, and prevent the apparent death of Commander Data in that time. Beverly assumed the guise of a nurse and, along with Deanna Troi , experienced quite a bit of discomfort with the corsets of the period. Crusher determined why the Devidians traveled back to that era, and was almost a victim of their energy-draining device. ( TNG : " Time's Arrow, Part II ")
In 2369 , Beverly developed a close friendship when she mentored Amanda Rogers , who was aboard the Enterprise as part of her Starfleet officer's training. It was later discovered that Rogers was the child of two former members of the Q Continuum who had abandoned the Continuum and had established a new life in Kansas as Humans. They were killed when a tornado struck their home. It was later revealed that this was punishment levied by the Continuum. Q appeared on the Enterprise and, in his own way, began to mentor Rogers in the ways of the Continuum. Beverly objected to Q's interference and was silenced briefly by Q when he transformed her into a dog . Rogers, using her new-found powers, restored Beverly to Human form. ( TNG : " True Q ")
That same year, Admiral Alynna Nechayev assigned Crusher, along with Captain Picard and Lieutenant Worf, to a covert mission to seek out and destroy a Cardassian metagenic weapon on Celtris III . Her purpose was to locate and destroy any biological material related to the weapon. The group went through a rigorous training program for the mission, and it was physically straining on Beverly. She used her charms to get a Ferengi, DaiMon Solok , to secure the team passage to Celtris III, and navigated the dangerous caves of Celtris to what was believed to be the launching point for the weapon. It turned out to be a ruse intended to capture Picard, although Worf and Crusher escaped. ( TNG : " Chain Of Command, Part I ") As a form of psychological torture under Gul Madred , Picard was offered freedom, but was told Beverly had been captured. Madred said that she would be tortured if Picard left, forcing the captain to stay. ( TNG : " Chain Of Command, Part II ")
Discoveries and Research [ ]
Dr. Crusher working with a medical tricorder
Crusher had to deal with various epidemics aboard the Enterprise , including a polywater intoxication in 2364 . The affliction was different than that encountered at Psi 2000 by the older USS Enterprise nearly a century prior, and the antigen created by Dr. McCoy was ineffective; Crusher had to develop a new version. ( TNG : " The Naked Now ")
Another disease ravaged the ship later that year, when students returning from a field trip on Quazulu VIII brought along a deadly respiratory virus . Fortunately, Beverly's skills led her to an antidote, averting disaster. ( TNG : " Angel One ")
Beverly helped reconstruct Lore after the Enterprise found him abandoned on Omicron Theta , becoming very familiar with Data's workings in the process. ( TNG : " Datalore ", " The Game ")
Crusher was the first to observe the parasites which attempted to take control of the Federation in 2364 , and determined a way to remove them from the host. ( TNG : " Conspiracy ")
A Romulan scout was found crashed on Galorndon Core in 2366 , and Crusher was in charge of treating the sole survivor. Although she improvised as much as she could, there was not much medical knowledge available on Romulans and the survivor later died. ( TNG : " The Enemy ")
While visiting the Borg cube which invaded Federation space in 2367 , Crusher came up with the idea of damaging the Borg ship's power nodes in order to halt their progress towards Earth . ( TNG : " The Best of Both Worlds ") She worked with Commander Data to develop a modification to the nanites which could be introduced to the Borg in order to destroy their mechanical systems, but the changes would take several weeks. Crusher later helped Data link with Locutus of Borg , Picard's assimilated alter ego. She realized that the Borg interdependency was a great weakness, and suggested Data use a seemingly benign command to shut the Borg down. After the crisis, Crusher pioneered the surgical techniques used for removing implants from Picard. ( TNG : " The Best of Both Worlds, Part II ")
When young Willie Potts was poisoned after eating a native plant on Ogus II , Crusher stabilized his condition and kept him healthy enough to live until the ship arrived at a medical facility designed to treat the poisoning. This task was complicated by the fact that the Enterprise had been hijacked by Data after his "father", Noonien Soong , sent out a signal to bring him to Soong's location. Power was needed from the quarantine field in order to restore the ship's systems, and Dr. Crusher needed to determine the precise amount of energy needed to keep Willie safe. ( TNG : " Brothers ")
In 2367 , Beverly assisted in the delivery of a large spaceborne lifeform whose mother was accidentally killed by the Enterprise . ( TNG : " Galaxy's Child ")
Later that year, Dr. Crusher developed a method of treating victims of the Tarchanne ; unfortunately, the treatment was only effective on individuals who had only recently begun metamorphosis. ( TNG : " Identity Crisis ")
Dr. Crusher was the first non- Trill to study their anatomy and transplant a symbiont into a new host. ( TNG : " The Host ")
When non-corporeal criminals imprisoned on Mab-Bu VI took over the bodies of Troi, Data, and Miles O'Brien , Crusher helped design a neutrino field that would force out and then trap the lifeforms. However, the timing was not right and the crew was forced to abandon the use of the device. ( TNG : " Power Play ")
Worf was paralyzed after an accident in the cargo bay in 2368 . Beverly invited the noted neuroscientist Dr. Toby Russell to the Enterprise to confer on treatments. Crusher wanted to use traditional treatment options, but Russell pushed for a radical new surgical technique using a genetronic replicator . Dr. Crusher turned down the plan, feeling it to be too risky. Russell suggested the replicator to Worf anyway, angering Beverly. She later relieved Russell from duty after she used one of her experimental drugs to treat a disaster victim when a traditional medication would have saved his life. Furthermore, Crusher was frustrated by the fact that Worf wanted to commit suicide rather than live as a paraplegic. She was adamant that neither the surgery or suicide was possible, but after talking to Captain Picard, she realized that the genetronic replicator was Worf's best chance at staying alive. Crusher reluctantly granted permission for the surgery and it was ultimately successful thanks to the redundancies of Klingon anatomy , although Crusher still did not approve of Russell's methods. ( TNG : " Ethics ")
When Ambassador Ves Alkar began using Deanna Troi as a receptacle for his psychic "waste" in 2369 , Crusher developed a way to break his link on her and restore Troi to normal. ( TNG : " Man Of The People ")
Crusher was the first to study a macroscopic coalescent organism found on Relay Station 47 in 2369 . Her entire hand was duplicated by the organism while she was studying it in the Enterprise sickbay. ( TNG : " Aquiel ")
Also in 2369 , Beverly was a major participant in the race to decipher the final research of Dr. Galen . Her contributions, along with those of the Enterprise -D crew and various other interests, led to the discovery of a message from the ancient humanoids , the oldest sentient humanoid species. ( TNG : " The Chase ")
Crusher unwittingly caused the first case of Barclay's Protomorphosis Syndrome in 2370 . She used a synthetic T-cell to treat Lieutenant Reginald Barclay 's case of Urodelan flu , intending for the T-cell to activate a dormant gene and allow him to fight the infection. Another anomaly in Barclay's genes caused the T-cell to mutate, and it began activating other dormant introns . The T-cell became airborne and rapidly spread to the rest of the ship, causing the entire Enterprise crew to "de-evolve" to earlier evolutionary stages. ( TNG : " Genesis ")
In Command [ ]
Beverly in command of the Enterprise -D
As a fully-certified bridge officer, Crusher commanded the Enterprise -D on several occasions, most notably in 2370 while nearly the entire crew was searching for Data on a renegade Borg planet. The ship was attacked by a Borg vessel , but her quick thinking allowed the Enterprise to escape and destroy the Borg ship. ( TNG : " Descent ", " Descent, Part II ") She also occasionally commanded night watch shifts in order to stay on top of starship operations . ( TNG : " Thine Own Self ")
Conflicts with the Prime Directive [ ]
Dr. Crusher's empathy for her patients and her concern for their care above everything else occasionally caused problems, as she openly challenged Captain Picard's unwillingness to intervene on a situation in 2364 where the Brekkians were supplying the Ornarans with an addictive drug . Such an intervention would have been a direct violation of the Prime Directive . ( TNG : " Symbiosis ")
Another instance of Beverly's empathy getting the better of her was when she rescued a native of Mintaka III during an emergency mission to a cultural observation outpost on the Bronze-age world. The Mintakan , Liko , awoke in the Enterprise sickbay and saw Captain Picard, believing him to be a god. After he was returned to his people, his story caused confusion and paranoia until Picard was able to prove that he too, was mortal. ( TNG : " Who Watches The Watchers ")
Also in 2366 , Beverly was taken captive on the war-torn planet of Rutia IV after tending to citizens wounded during an Ansata attack. Their leader, Kyril Finn , wanted to have her cure the internal damage caused as a result of the terrorists' use of a folded-space transport device. Crusher was shocked that Finn compared himself to George Washington , but also began to wonder whether or not the Federation's involvement with the official Rutian government was appropriate. She also had a great deal of sympathy for a small child who helped her tend to those injured by the transport device, and she was able to gain Finn's confidence as he sketched several pages of drawings modeled after her. Eventually, Beverly realized Finn was extremely irrational and misguided after he kidnapped Captain Picard and attempted to destroy the Enterprise . She was rescued when the Enterprise crew was able to locate the Ansata compound and Finn was killed. The child picked up a weapon and attempted to assassinate Picard and Alexana Devos , a Rutian security official, but Beverly convinced him to stand down. ( TNG : " The High Ground ")
Crusher made her feelings about the empathic metamorph Kamala and her "duty" quite clear when the Enterprise played host to peace negotiations between Krios and Valt in 2368 . She felt Kamala was being forced into what amounted to slavery , and resented the fact that she was confined to quarters aboard the ship. ( TNG : " The Perfect Mate ")
In 2368 , the Enterprise discovered a crashed Borg scout ship in the Argolis Cluster . There was one survivor, Third of Five , later known as Hugh . Although Lieutenant Worf, Commander Riker and several Enterprise crewmembers wanted to kill the drone , it was due to Crusher's insistence that he was brought aboard and nursed back to health. Beverly strongly disagreed with the plan to send Hugh back with a computer virus designed to infect the Borg Collective , being the sole member of the senior staff who refused to recognize the Borg threat, but eventually helped Chief Engineer Geordi La Forge work with Hugh to construct such a weapon. Eventually, Captain Picard decided against using the virus, but the Enterprise crew did not realize at the time that the personality Hugh developed working with Crusher and the rest of the crew would be nearly as damaging. ( TNG : " I Borg ", " Descent, Part II ")
Dr. Crusher while surgically altering Worf to appear Boraalan
Beverly attended the Altine Conference in 2369 , and learned of the research of a Ferengi scientist named Reyga . He believed he had found the secret to metaphasic shielding , but many other scientists were skeptical of his claims. Crusher organized a small conference aboard the Enterprise and invited several leading scientists in the field of subspace morphology to view a test of the technology on the shuttlecraft Justman . Unfortunately, the test was sabotaged by a Takaran scientist named Jo'Bril , who staged his own death and then murdered Reyga by making it appear he had committed suicide in order to discredit the Ferengi. Jo'Bril had planned to steal the design for his own malicious use. Beverly felt responsible for the two deaths, and was determined to find the cause of the accidents. Crusher broke a number of rules, including performing an autopsy on Reyga against the tenets of the Ferengi death ritual , and was relieved of duty. After some helpful encouragement from Guinan , she eventually discovered Jo'Bril's plan, prevented him from stealing the data, and proved the technology was valid. Aboard the shuttlepod, Beverly was attacked by Jo'Bril and she was forced to kill him in self-defense. Crusher was exonerated and returned to duty shortly following the incident. ( TNG : " Suspicions ")
The Enterprise observed the destruction of Boraal II 's biosphere in 2370 . Crusher supported Dr. Nikolai Rozhenko 's plan to save a small group of the Boraalans , feeling that the Prime Directive did not apply since the people would be destroyed anyhow. She was saddened when Picard did not take any action, and was confronted with a new dilemma when Rozhenko went over Picard's head and transported the group to the Enterprise holodeck. Along with Commander Data, Crusher had to decide on an appropriate new home for the Boraalans, a decision which weighed heavily on her shoulders. She correctly assumed that any choice made would shape the development of the Boraalan civilization for centuries to come. The Boraalan group was subsequently moved to Vacca VI , which had a climate somewhat less hospitable, but was in a secluded location. ( TNG : " Homeward ")
Medical Record [ ]
In 2364 , Crusher was hit by the mostly harmless energy stun effect generated by the Beta Renner entity. ( TNG : " Lonely Among Us ")
Crusher sustained superficial phaser burns after she tried to prevent Lore from betraying the Enterprise crew in 2364 . ( TNG : " Datalore ")
Also that year, Dr. Crusher was injured during an away mission to the planet Minos . She and Captain Picard were being chased by one of the automated weapon drones on the planet, and the pair fell into an abandoned bunker. Crusher had lost her medical kit and was going into shock, but she kept awake long enough to instruct Picard on how to use the native plants to treat her wounds. She was rescued after Picard and Data figured out how to disable the weapons. ( TNG : " The Arsenal of Freedom ")
A Ullian named Jev visited the Enterprise in 2368 , and mentally attacked several crewmembers, including Crusher, causing them to fall into a coma for a brief period of time, initially blamed on Iresine Syndrome . Crusher was forced to revisit the time when she and Picard visited Jack's body. Jev took the place of both Jack and Picard at various times, resulting in a terrifying experience. ( TNG : " Violations ")
Q turned Beverly into a dog in 2369, but Amanda Rogers, another Q, returned her to Human form. ( TNG : " True Q ")
Under the tutelage of Worf, Beverly was very eager to learn advanced Klingon martial arts. She attempted the techniques as fast as possible, to varying degrees of success. She was slightly injured during a training session in 2369 , although she admitted it was more of a blow to her pride. ( TNG : " The Quality of Life ")
Crusher is hit by a Romulan disruptor blast
Crusher was nearly buried by a cave-in while scouting the underground caverns of Celtris III , but she escaped with minor injuries. ( TNG : " Chain Of Command, Part I ")
The Enterprise aided a Romulan Warbird damaged after an alien species used the artificial quantum singularity in its warp core as a nest for its young in late 2369 . The Warbird was evacuated, and survivors were brought to sickbay . One of the aliens was masquerading as a Romulan female and was discovered by a Romulan crewmember. He fired a disruptor on disintegrate at her, but Dr. Crusher got in the way and was hit. When time was reversed and restored, Counselor Troi was on hand to move Crusher out of the way in time. ( TNG : " Timescape ")
Crusher was severely injured in 2370 by Lieutenant Worf, affected by Barclay's Protomorphosis Syndrome . She was placed into stasis after being nearly paralyzed by venom, and required reconstructive surgery. Therefore, she did not "de-evolve" with the rest of the crew at that point in time. ( TNG : " Genesis ")
The Enterprise -E [ ]
Crusher aboard the Enterprise -E in 2373
The Enterprise -D was destroyed in 2371 following a crash landing of the saucer section on the planet Veridian III . Although there were no fatalities to the crew, there were many wounded, which kept Crusher quite busy. ( Star Trek Generations )
The Borg [ ]
She transferred to the newly commissioned USS Enterprise -E the following year. Her command abilities were put to good use during the ship's near assimilation by the Borg during its trip to the year 2063 , where she served as temporary executive officer during the crisis. Even though she was not fond of the Emergency Medical Hologram , she successfully used it as a decoy to keep the Borg distracted while the sickbay staff and patients made it to relative safety. ( Star Trek: First Contact )
The Ba'ku and Son'a [ ]
Dr. Crusher in 2375
In 2375 , Beverly was part of the diplomatic contingent welcoming the Evora as a protectorate into the Federation . She also aided Captain Picard in his struggle to keep the Ba'ku from being relocated by the Son'a , and was the first to realize that both species were of the same ancestry. During the Ba'ku exodus, Deanna noted that her breasts were starting to "firm up" due to the effects of the planet's metaphasic radiation . ( Star Trek: Insurrection )
Trip to Romulus [ ]
Dr. Crusher examining B-4 in 2379
Beverly then attended the wedding of Commander Riker and Counselor Troi on Earth and subsequently traveled to Betazed to take part in a traditional Betazoid wedding ceremony. After discovering Data's 'brother', B-4 , Beverly and Lt. Commander Data collaborated on an examination of the less-advanced android's systems. Beverly then, after the Enterprise was diverted to Romulus , examined Praetor Shinzon 's DNA, informing Picard that he was a clone of himself. ( Star Trek Nemesis )
Leaving Starfleet [ ]
Continuing to serve aboard the Enterprise , Crusher attempted to pursue a romantic relationship with Picard five times. In 2381 , when Picard was called back from their shore leave on Casperia Prime early, she affirmed her belief that their relationship was ending once again. That night, she and Picard conceived a son ; Crusher intended to tell Picard, but several attempts on Picard's life over the next two months convinced her that Picard would always be surrounded by danger, and she doubted her ability to protect their son from it.
As Picard himself had never voiced a desire for children, Crusher decided to leave the Enterprise and Starfleet to raise her son, whom she named Jack after her deceased husband, alone. She cut off all contact with her friends and comrades, who would know nothing of her whereabouts for nearly twenty years. ( PIC : " The Next Generation ", " Disengage ", " Seventeen Seconds ")
Civilian Life [ ]
Sometime in 2381 , Crusher was on a list of former Starfleet officers that needed to be retrieved and sent back to Earth when a mysterious ship began attacking other unaffiliated ships. Lieutenant junior grade Brad Boimler got himself excited, thinking the USS Cerritos was going to meet her, but the USS Vancouver was sent instead. ( LD : " The Inner Fight ")
Doctor Without borders [ ]
Beverly Crusher in 2401
Crusher settled in London and eventually joined the Mariposas organization; when Jack was old enough, she told him about Picard and encouraged him to meet him, but he decided not to. ( PIC : " Seventeen Seconds ")
Saving Jack [ ]
During the final battle with the Borg , Crusher expertly fired the rebuilt USS Enterprise -D 's weapons manually while Worf was on the Borg cube , much to the surprise of her crewmates. Crusher simply stated that "a lot's happened in the last twenty years" when they looked at her in surprise. ( PIC : " The Last Generation ")
Back to Starfleet [ ]
Following the destruction of the Borg, Crusher accepted the position as the new Head of Starfleet Medical Branch and was reinstated with the rank of admiral . In this role, Crusher developed a fleet-wide transporter solution to remove the Borg DNA from Starfleet's young officers. Crusher also spearheaded technology that privately scanned for other irregularities, exposing the Changeling infiltrators in Starfleet.
In 2402 , Crusher and Picard accompanied Jack, now a Starfleet ensign , to his first assignment on the USS Enterprise -G . ( PIC : " The Last Generation ")
Personal interests [ ]
Theater [ ].
Beverly was an accomplished thespian and playwright. She formed a theater troupe aboard the Enterprise ( TNG : " The Nth Degree ") and produced several classic and original plays, sometimes to the dismay of the crewmembers she sought to fill the roles. ( TNG : " Disaster ", " A Fistful of Datas ", " Frame of Mind ") She wrote the plays Something for Breakfast and Frame of Mind . ( TNG : " A Fistful of Datas ", " Frame of Mind ") At various points, her troupe included Will Riker , ( TNG : " A Fistful of Datas ", " Frame of Mind ") Data, ( TNG : " Frame of Mind ") Geordi La Forge, ( TNG : " Disaster ") Reg Barclay, ( TNG : " The Nth Degree ") and even Captain Picard. ( TNG : " A Fistful of Datas "). She also taught an acting workshop. ( TNG : " The Nth Degree ")
Produced works [ ]
- Cyrano de Bergerac – 2367 , starring Reginald Barclay and Beverly Crusher ( TNG : " The Nth Degree ")
- The Pirates of Penzance – 2368 , starring Geordi La Forge ( TNG : " Disaster ")
- Something for Breakfast – 2369 , starring William Riker and Jean-Luc Picard ( TNG : " A Fistful of Datas ")
- Frame of Mind – 2369 , starring William Riker and Data ( TNG : " Frame of Mind ")
Dancing [ ]
Although she was not shy about her theatrical abilities, Beverly was somewhat embarrassed of her past as a dancer, not wanting to be known by her nickname, " The Dancing Doctor ." She studied tap and jazz dance , winning at least one award at Saint Louis Academy in St. Louis . It was listed as part of her service record. She was also familiar with the waltz and was capable of teaching it to others. ( TNG : " Data's Day ", " Ensign Ro ", " The Game ")
Other hobbies [ ]
Beverly had varied interests in cybernetics and as an ethno-botanist , she even wrote papers on the subjects. ( TNG : " 11001001 ", " Clues ", " Cause And Effect "; PIC : " The Next Generation ") When the Enterprise -D was docked at Starbase 74 in 2364 , she was eager to meet Dr. Terence Epstein , a leading authority in the field of cybernetics. Eventually she published a paper on the subject which Toby Russell considered revolutionary and fascinating. ( TNG : " 11001001 ", " Ethics ") She studied the Klingon mok'bara , use of the bat'leth , and other martial arts with Lieutenant Worf. ( TNG : " The Quality of Life ", " Sub Rosa ", " Masks ") Her favorite holodeck simulations included Alture VII and the Orient Express . ( TNG : " Birthright, Part I ", " Emergence ")
Crusher was also a regular participant in the Enterprise -D poker games. ( TNG : " Cause And Effect ", " The Outcast ", " The Quality of Life ", " Lower Decks ", " All Good Things... ") She made an unconventional wager with Will Riker, Geordi La Forge, and Worf in 2369 . Beverly felt that beards were no more than affectations, and made the bet that if she won, the three men would need to shave their beards off. If the men won, Crusher would need to become a brunette. For a time, it appeared as if Crusher was going to win the bet, but the senior staff was recalled to the bridge before the game could be finished, despite Crusher's protest. ( TNG : " The Quality of Life ")
Personal relationships [ ]
Wesley crusher [ ].
Wesley and Beverly in 2364
Jack and Beverly took Wesley to Balfour Lake on his first camping trip while he was still very young. Beverly later recalled with amusement that Wesley entertained himself by throwing manta leaves into the fire. ( TNG : " Attached ")
During his early childhood, Wesley had problems making friends. Beverly explained she had the same experience as a youngster to help him feel better about the situation. ( TNG : " The Offspring ") He was also very inquisitive, and once asked Beverly for a definition of life. Every answer she tried to offer seemed incomplete. ( TNG : " The Quality of Life ")
Beverly never used physical violence to punish Wesley. The only time she ever slapped him was during Ambassador Sarek 's visit to the Enterprise -D in 2366 . Sarek was affected by Bendii Syndrome and his negative emotions were projected onto the crew. ( TNG : " Sarek ")
Wesley came aboard the Enterprise with Beverly in 2364 . He accompanied her on the turbolift to the bridge , initially drawing the ire of Captain Picard. ( TNG : " Encounter at Farpoint ")
When the Traveler first visited the Enterprise -D in 2364 , he informed Picard that Wesley had great potential and was in touch with abilities most Humans did not realize they could access. He asked that Picard not reveal this information to anyone, especially Dr. Crusher, although it is clear Picard did tell Beverly at some future point in time. ( TNG : " Where No One Has Gone Before ", " Journey's End ")
While visiting planet Rubicun III , Wes was arrested and sentenced to death for committing a minor violation of the Edo laws. Dr. Crusher was extremely upset, vowing that she would not let the Edo execute her son. Along with the Enterprise crew, she convinced the Edo God that the law was unjust and Wesley should be spared. ( TNG : " Justice ")
Wesley was the only person to realize that Lore had taken Data's place when the ship first recovered him in 2364 . Picard ordered him off the bridge after he spoke his concerns, forcing Beverly to follow him. Wes later convinced her to go reactivate Data and investigate Lore's activities. This ultimately prevented the Crystalline Entity from harvesting the Enterprise crew as an energy source. ( TNG : " Datalore ")
During Crusher's posting to Starfleet Medical in 2365 , Wesley remained aboard the ship. Commander Riker and Lieutenant Worf were responsible for caring for Wesley in her absence. ( TNG : " The Child ") After Beverly returned, she became concerned that Wesley was spending too much time on duty and not enough time socializing and being a teenager. Moreover, she felt she had missed out on much of his life, and was having trouble reconnecting to him. Later on, she learned that Wes did indeed have teenage friends. She noticed one of his attractive female companions, and tried to get more information about her from Guinan, as a good mother would. ( TNG : " Evolution ")
Beverly handing Wesley the holographic program Crusher 01 in 2367
Wesley was to leave for the Academy in 2366 , but was delayed while assisting in a rescue of Commander Riker, Counselor Troi, and Ambassador Lwaxana Troi . Because he was set back one year, Picard promoted him to full ensign, making Dr. Crusher extremely proud. ( TNG : " Ménage à Troi "). Wesley finally left to attend the Academy in 2367 , separating the Crushers yet again. ( TNG : " Final Mission ") He did not get around to writing Beverly until much later in the year. ( TNG : " The Host ")
In 2368 , Nova Squadron members, including Wesley, were involved in a disaster which led to the death of one cadet, Joshua Albert . They illegally used the Kolvoord Starburst maneuver and then lied to an inquiry panel about the circumstances surrounding the incident. Dr. Crusher rallied behind her son and defended the team on behalf of the other parents even in the face of evidence which indicated they were being deceptive. She was disappointed with Wesley's conduct when the truth was revealed. ( TNG : " The First Duty ")
Wes returned to visit the Enterprise -D in 2370 . He became very rude and abrasive towards his former crewmates, including his mother, and jeopardized a Federation operation on the Dorvan V colony. After meeting with the Traveler once more, Wes realized that his destiny did not include Starfleet at that moment in time, and he resigned his commission. Beverly was apprehensive about his departure, but she remembered the Traveler's words from six years prior and realized not only had Wesley grown and needed to make his own decisions, but that this was an important and necessary step in his life. ( TNG : " Journey's End ")
Wesley returned to finish his studies well before 2379 , attending the wedding of Will Riker and Deanna Troi with Dr. Crusher. ( Star Trek Nemesis )
Friendships [ ]
Crusher was quite close to several members of the Enterprise crew. She was the only senior officer who customarily addressed the rest of the bridge crew by their first names.
She was also interested in the well-being of her staff, and was especially close to Nurse Alyssa Ogawa . She often advised Ogawa on her romantic affairs, including that with her future husband, Andrew Powell . ( TNG : " Imaginary Friend ", " Lower Decks ", " Genesis ")
Crusher and Q had an adversarial relationship. When Q was temporarily turned into a Human as punishment by the Q Continuum , she did not use her usual gentle bedside manner in treating a back injury he later suffered. ( TNG : " Deja Q ") Beverly had the chance to tutor Amanda Rogers during her stay aboard the Enterprise , and became protective of the young woman. Amanda sought her help in dealing with her newfound powers, wanting to know what Crusher would do if she suddenly discovered she could have anything she wanted. Crusher could not answer, as she did not believe she could make a decision like that until confronted with it. She was not happy with Q's attempts to influence Amanda into giving up her life as a Human and using the powers of the Q. Q was frustrated with Crusher's interference, remarking to Captain Picard that " Crusher gets more shrill with each passing year. " ( TNG : " True Q ")
Deanna Troi [ ]
Crusher and Deanna Troi became very good friends. They often worked out together and both took Worf's mok'bara class. ( TNG : " The Price ", " Second Chances ", " Sub Rosa ", " Masks ")
Deanna and Beverly often advised one another on romantic relationships. Deanna worried that her romance with Devinoni Ral was proceeding too fast, but Beverly assured her that perhaps she did not need to be rational regarding a whirlwind romance. ( TNG : " The Price ")
Beverly did not often use the salon aboard the Enterprise , and began to do so when she began a relationship with Odan . Deanna arrived at the salon around the same time, and Beverly became self-conscious. Troi recognized the feelings between Odan and Beverly, even though the two tried to keep their romance a secret, and liked seeing Crusher happy. However, Troi also sensed the dual nature of the ambassador, and warned Beverly to be cautious. Later, when Odan was implanted in Will Riker's body, Deanna counseled Beverly on the mixed feelings she then felt towards Odan. Although Beverly wished she had never met him, Deanna told Beverly that she could never love without risking pain and encouraged Beverly to accept Odan's love if she still felt it while he was in Riker's body. ( TNG : " The Host ")
Troi did not trust time-traveler Berlinghoff Rasmussen when he came aboard the ship and told Beverly about her feelings of suspicion. Crusher was dismissive, as she was still smitten with the professor. ( TNG : " A Matter Of Time ")
In 2369 , the Enterprise rescued a transporter-created duplicate of Will Riker, known as Thomas Riker , from the research station on Nervala IV . Tom Riker wished to resume the romantic relationship he had with Deanna, which Will Riker had broken off upon the mission to Nervala. Troi and Crusher discussed a date with Tom during a workout, where Crusher mischievously pointed out that Troi should not be afraid to try a relationship with the duplicate Riker. When Tom Riker entered the gym, Beverly decided to leave the two alone, which led to Tom and Deanna becoming intimate. ( TNG : " Second Chances ")
Deanna accompanied Beverly to Felisa Howard's funeral in 2370 , and went with her back to Felisa's home following the services. Beverly confided to Deanna about the erotic dreams she experienced after reading her grandmother's journals, which were due to the influence of Ronin . After Beverly met Ronin on Caldos, Deanna reminded her that her feelings of romance may simply be due to shared trauma, but Beverly brushed off her concern. ( TNG : " Sub Rosa ")
Crusher teaching Data to dance
Beverly and Data also had a special relationship, with Data seeking advice from Beverly on subjects ranging from parenting ( TNG : " The Offspring ") to dancing. She taught Data to tap dance, not knowing that he had intended to learn how to dance for the wedding of Miles O'Brien and Keiko Ishikawa . ( TNG : " Data's Day ") Data also came to her for advice on whether or not to consider the exocomps alive, and she was present when Data learned they were indeed sentient. ( TNG : " The Quality of Life ")
In 2369 , Data incorporated a subroutine for small talk. At the recommendation of Captain Picard, he studied Commander Hutchinson while the Enterprise underwent a baryon sweep at Arkaria Base . Beverly was the first person Data tried to engage in small talk using his observations of Hutchinson, to her astonishment and delight. ( TNG : " Starship Mine ")
During Worf's promotion ceremony in 2371 , Dr. Crusher tried to explain to Data the humor behind Worf being dunked after walking the plank on the holodeck recreation of the sailing ship Enterprise . Data did not completely understand and then pushed Crusher into the water, as an attempt at the same type of humor. However, Beverly and the rest of the senior staff did not find it nearly as amusing. La Forge later recommended that Data stay out of sickbay for a few days following the ceremony. ( Star Trek Generations )
Beverly thought Data had nicer eyes than his predecessor, B-4 . ( Star Trek Nemesis )
Beverly and Guinan talk about Wesley
In 2366 , Beverly, while seeing her son socialize with other teenagers, asked Guinan whether she had any children. Guinan replied she had a lot, and Beverly inquired whether she had ever had trouble with one of them. Guinan said she had with one, that he wouldn't listen to anybody, and upon Beverly's remark that all children go through that, Guinan explained this was not the case among a species of listeners. Asked about how he had grown out of it, Guinan explained a mother shapes her child in ways she doesn't even realize, sometimes just by listening. ( TNG : " Evolution ")
When in 2369 Beverly was relieved of duty, Guinan visited her in her quarters, claiming she sought treatment for her tennis elbow . As Beverly began to talk about her recent actions, she explained she had illegally performed an autopsy on the Ferengi scientist Reyga who had appeared to have committed suicide. As Beverly later found out, the Takaran scientist Jo'Bril had in fact murdered Reyga in order to discredit the Ferengi. Upon Guinan's encouragement, Beverly eventually discovered Jo'Bril's plan, prevented him from stealing Reyga's research data, and proved the technology was valid. She was exonerated and returned to duty shortly following the incident. In order to thank Guinan for her encouragement, she presented her with a state-of-the-art tennis racquet, on which Guinan admitted she had never played tennis. ( TNG : " Suspicions ")
Romance [ ]
Aside from her marriage to Jack R. Crusher, Beverly has been involved in a number of romances. She recalled her first crush, as an eight-year old, was on an eleven-year old soccer player named Stefan . In her fantasies, they married and had twin boys then a girl. Stefan became a famous artist, and they adored one another. In reality, Stefan never knew that Beverly existed. ( TNG : " The Host ")
Sometime before she met Jack, she had an intense week-long relationship with an unidentified man which began after she knew him for only a single day. ( TNG : " The Price ")
While on the Enterprise -D, Crusher was enamored with a Zalkonian she named John Doe , rescued from a crashed escape pod in 2366 . Thanks to her help, John evolved into another form of life and returned to Zalkon to help others of his kind escape repression. ( TNG : " Transfigurations ")
She fell very much in love with the Trill ambassador Odan in 2367 , not knowing that he was in fact a joined lifeform. Odan's host at the time was killed in a shuttlecraft accident, but the symbiont survived. It was implanted in Will Riker, causing Beverly to experience many mixed feelings. She was able to accept and love Odan in Riker's body, but when Odan was implanted in a new Trill host, this time a female, she ended the relationship. Although she still loved Odan, she could not deal with the uncertainty and frequent changes of the Trill species. ( TNG : " The Host ")
When Berlinghoff Rasmussen arrived aboard the Enterprise in 2368 , Dr. Crusher wanted to learn more about the future, including whether or not the Telurian plague had been cured. Beverly was tolerant of Rasmussen's incessant questioning for much longer than most of the crew, but even she tired of his obnoxiousness after he made a pass at her. She felt very betrayed when Rasmussen was discovered to be a hoax. ( TNG : " A Matter Of Time ")
After returning to Caldos in 2370 for her grandmother's funeral, Beverly learned that Felisa apparently had a thirty-four year old lover named Ronin. Ronin was actually an anaphasic lifeform who had been living with Howard women since taking up residence with Jessel Howard in the 1600s and passed from daughter to daughter in the form of a candle , which was his true home. Her biochemistry allowed him to maintain molecular cohesion, and he formed a symbiotic relationship with all of her descendants. Ronin had a strong hypnotic influence, offering Beverly erotic pleasure and the promise of further romance. Beverly was bewitched, resigning her post on the Enterprise to move to Caldos. She eventually came to her senses after Ronin killed a resident of Caldos, Ned Quint , and seriously injured Captain Picard, Commander Data, and Commander La Forge. She was forced to destroy Ronin after he tried to merge with her. ( TNG : " Sub Rosa ")
Jean-Luc Picard [ ]
Beverly and Jean-Luc maintained a close friendship while serving on the Enterprise -D, usually sharing their morning meal together. Reflecting their long history, Beverly was the only member of the crew to regularly address Jean-Luc by his first name. Beverly usually tried to serve a new and exotic food, although she and Jean-Luc both preferred something simple. ( TNG : " Qpid ", " The Perfect Mate ", " The Chase ", " Attached ") Their relationship stayed platonic for the most part. They considered one another close friends, and would give each other advice when dealing with difficult decisions. While Beverly was in anguish over Odan's failing health while the symbiont was in Will Riker's body, Jean-Luc gave her a hug, and assured her that he would always be her friend and be willing to help her any way he could. ( TNG : " The Host ") Beverly's anger over the treatment of Kamala led to Picard spending time with her, where he quickly learned that he was falling for the metamorph. Beverly did not know what to say, but reciprocated the emotional support he had offered the year prior. ( TNG : " The Perfect Mate ") Picard tried to make Crusher realize that the deaths of Jo'Bril and later Reyga were not her fault and that she should not try to rush her investigation. Beverly was too upset and preoccupied to understand his words, and Jean-Luc was extremely disappointed when she broke the Prime Directive and performed an autopsy on Reyga. ( TNG : " Suspicions ") Picard knew that Crusher's odd decisions after meeting Ronin were not normal and confronted her on Caldos colony. Although Beverly initially resisted his demands for an explanation, she broke free of Ronin's influence after he attacked Picard. ( TNG : " Sub Rosa ")
Beverly and Picard on the holodeck
Crusher and Jean-Luc Picard while on Kesprytt in 2370
Beverly with Picard's impostor
Early on, Beverly and Jean-Luc experienced several romantically close calls. Once was under the influence of the Psi 2000 intoxication , where Crusher flirted with Picard and attempted to seduce him on the bridge of the Enterprise . ( TNG : " The Naked Now ") Picard invited Beverly onto the holodeck to participate in a Dixon Hill storyline, along with Data and ship's historian Whalen, and seemed quite smitten when faced with his doctor in her 1940s outfit. However, their two companions interfered and so there was no chance of anything leading on from there.( TNG : " The Big Goodbye ") Commander Dexter Remmick interrogated Crusher about Captain Picard in mid- 2364 and questioned her about her true feelings towards Picard. Beverly refused to answer, claiming that they were irrelevant to the operation of the ship. ( TNG : " Coming of Age ") In 2366 , a duplicate of Picard replaced the captain in order to learn about Human relationships. It invited Crusher to dinner, where the two had a romantic evening including dancing. However, once the duplicate had enough information, it unceremoniously bade Crusher farewell. She teasingly held the real Picard responsible for his duplicate's actions when he was returned to the Enterprise . ( TNG : " Allegiance ") Several times, Beverly began to explain her true feelings to Jean-Luc, once while they were held captive on Rutia ( TNG : " The High Ground ") and another time with Picard's duplicate in the warp bubble universe but she was interrupted in both instances. ( TNG : " Remember Me ") Both also displayed some jealousy when the other found a love interest, such as Crusher with Ambassador Odan or Picard with Jenice Manheim and Lieutenant Commander Nella Daren . ( TNG : " The Host ", " We'll Always Have Paris ", " Lessons ")
In 2370 , Picard and Crusher were taken captive on planet Kesprytt , and were linked together by psi-wave devices to prepare them for interrogation, but the devices transmitted their thoughts to each other and they learned each other's most intimate secrets. Beverly stayed up one night to listen to Jean-Luc's dreams, and Jean-Luc discovered that Beverly usually always had some smart-aleck comment at the ready, although she had learned to repress the urge to say them out loud. One night, Beverly brought up Jack and feelings of guilt washed over Picard. She finally learned that he too, felt an attraction, but did not act on it out of respect for his dead friend. Once they returned to the Enterprise , Picard expressed desire to further their relationship. However, Beverly ultimately decided that she did not want to ruin their friendship or be placed in a conflict of interest, and they decided to remain mutual friends. ( TNG : " Attached ")
As Picard himself had never voiced a desire for children, Crusher decided to leave the Enterprise and Starfleet to raise her son, whom she named Jack after her deceased husband, alone. She cut off all contact with her friends and comrades, who knew nothing of her whereabouts for nearly twenty years. She settled in London ; when Jack was old enough, she told him about Picard and encouraged him to meet him, but he decided not to.
After Jack came in danger from the Changelings , Crusher contacted Picard for help, resulting in Picard learning of Jack's existence and that he was their son. The two resumed an amicable friendship, but did not appear to pursue a new romance, although they did see Jack off together to his first assignment as a Starfleet ensign a year later. ( PIC : " The Next Generation ", " Seventeen Seconds ", " The Last Generation ")
Alternate realities and timelines [ ]
An alternate version of Beverly Crusher was chief medical officer on the Enterprise -D created after the USS Enterprise -C briefly entered the year 2366 through a temporal rift . She strongly objected to the plan to send the Enterprise -C back to its proper time, and wondered if she would even be alive in the restored timeline. ( TNG : " Yesterday's Enterprise ")
Beverly was also the chief medical officer on several Enterprises in alternate quantum realities visited by Lieutenant Worf in 2370 following his encounter with a quantum fissure . In one such reality, however, Doctor Alyssa Ogawa was the chief medical officer of the Enterprise instead of her, with the rank of commander . ( TNG : " Parallels ")
Captain Beverly Picard
In an alternate 2370 , Crusher was able to figure out that the temporal anomaly 's effects were causing the crew's cellular structure to revert to earlier stages of development. At the same time, she became concerned about Picard's well-being after he learned he would be diagnosed with Irumodic Syndrome some time in the future. This caused her to reconsider her relationship with Jean-Luc, and she reversed her earlier decision to remain just friends. These events were eradicated from the timeline following the collapse of the anomaly.
In an alternate future , Beverly had been promoted to captain and was commanding the medical ship USS Pasteur . She had also married Picard and then divorced him quite some years prior, but had kept the surname of Picard following the divorce. She was initially skeptical of her former captain's claims about a temporal anomaly, but devoted the Pasteur to searching for it as a favor to her ex-husband, whom she still considered a good friend. The Pasteur was destroyed in a Klingon attack, but Picard later convinced Beverly and his other friends that the anomaly was a real danger, and they returned aboard the future USS Enterprise -D to collapse it. ( TNG : " All Good Things... ")
Anything but canon scenario [ ]
First contact with bragu's species.
Beverly Crusher on Bragu's homeworld
According to an anything but canon account, when the Enterprise-D made first contact with the people of Bragu 's homeworld , Beverly Crusher was on the away team for that very mission . Commander William T. Riker was the commanding officer of the away mission , and the two of them were accompanied by a command division officer as well.
The three Starfleet officers beamed down to the warp engineering laboratory of Bragu and Mucara . Upon meeting them, they learn that they were very excited to travel the stars and meet other species throughout the galaxy . They tell the landing party about their customs , such as watching reality TV and eating leftover fish that had been cooked in a microwave .
But when they started learning about their religious beliefs about mucus , things started to take a different turn. The Federation representatives weren't so eager to have them be part of their Federation when they found themselves grossed-out by the fact that they wiped their boogers all over their walls and consoles -- not to mention that they didn't even know what it meant to wash their hands .
Although Beverly was initially trying to encourage Riker to be open minded and respectful to their tradition and customs , she refused to shake their hands that were covered in boogers , telling him since he's the commanding officer he should do it. But Riker wasn't going to go through with it. Instead, he points his finger behind the aliens and says: "Look, Gorn invaders !" They then became distracted, turning to look at the Gorn that weren't actually there, and while they were looking, Riker sabotaged their warp engine by shooting it with his type 2 phaser . Bragu and the others then turn around to see the warp engine was ruined, and so Riker told them it must've not been ready for space travel after all. He tells them to call them when it's ready. Beverly however, tells them "Better yet, we'll call you." ( VST : " Worst Contact ")
Holograms [ ]
Dr. Crusher in Barash's holoprogram
Beverly Crusher has been holographically duplicated on a number of occasions.
- In 2366 , on stardate 43807.4, Lieutenant jg Reginald Barclay created at least two holographic Dr. Crushers shortly after he joined the Enterprise -D crew. Beverly took on the role of a friendly noble woman in one of Barclay's holo-fantasies . Riker, La Forge and Troi found Barclay asleep with his head on Crusher's lap after they intruded on his program. ( TNG : " Hollow Pursuits ")
- In 2367 , Barash recreated the entire command crew of the Enterprise -D on Alpha Onias III to keep Commander Riker there. Dr. Crusher was one of the personnel that was created. In this fictional timeline she was still serving as CMO aboard the Enterprise -D and holding the rank of a commander . ( TNG : " Future Imperfect ")
- In 2369 , on stardate 46424.1, James Moriarty created a holographic Crusher as part of his plan to trick Captain Picard into releasing control of the Enterprise -D. ( TNG : " Ship In A Bottle ")
- During Dal 's setup of the Kobayashi Maru scenario aboard the USS Protostar in 2383 , he requested that the computer select the best officers on his behalf, which included a holographic version of Dr. Crusher, as a member of his command crew. ( PRO : " Kobayashi ")
Miscellaneous information [ ]
Crusher's quarters on the Enterprise -D were on Deck 8, Room 2133. ( TNG : " Sub Rosa ") Her office was on Deck 12, Room 1629, adjacent to sickbay. ( TNG : " Genesis ")
Beverly had a fear of heights. ( TNG : " Chain Of Command, Part I ", " Attached ")
Crusher's command authorization code in 2373 was "Crusher-2-2-Beta-Charlie". ( Star Trek: First Contact )
When Tom Riker masqueraded as Will Riker aboard Deep Space 9 as part of a Maquis plot to steal the USS Defiant , he claimed Dr. Crusher had forced him on shore leave . ( DS9 : " Defiant ")
Beverly also said that she loved cats when Commander Riker complained about feeding Data's cat Spot. ( TNG : " Timescape ")
At some point during her twenty years away from her friends, she apparently became an expert in firing a starship's weapons to the point that she was easily able to manually fire the USS Enterprise -D 's weapons in Worf 's absence. Crusher's only explanation was that a lot had happened in twenty years. ( PIC : " The Last Generation ")

Background information [ ]
Beverly Crusher was played by actress and choreographer Gates McFadden . The character first appeared in " Encounter at Farpoint ". Her last episode until the third season was " The Neutral Zone ". She was absent from " The Child " through " Shades of Gray ", although she was seen in stock footage from "Symbiosis" and "Skin Of Evil" during Riker's flashbacks in the latter episode. She returned for " Evolution " and remained as part of the cast through the rest of the series and the four Next Generation -based motion pictures. Her character was not seen in " The Wounded " and did not have any lines in " Redemption " or " Cost Of Living ". Only her holodeck doppelganger was seen in " Hollow Pursuits ".
Initially, Beverly Crusher was to be the Enterprise 's schoolteacher. However, that was soon to change, due to David Gerrold . " One day during lunch, " he remembered, " I kept talking about Beverly Crusher [....] and in the middle of this I said, 'We don't have a ship's doctor yet, why don't we have Beverly Crusher be the ship's doctor?' I wish I'd recorded the conversation, because everybody said, 'Nah, that doesn’t work,' and then they started discussing it. Eddie Milkis said, 'You know, that saves us a character. If Beverly Crusher is the ship's doctor, then we don't have to create a ship's doctor.' Then Bob Justman said, 'No, that makes it harder for the captain to have this relationship with Beverly Crusher that we want to have. On the other hand, the fact that it's harder to have this relationship puts more tension… You know, Gene , that's not a bad idea.' And then Gene started discussing it. By lunch, Beverly Crusher was the ship's doctor. " ( The Fifty-Year Mission: The Next 25 Years , pp. 102-103)
Beverly Crusher was one of the least-defined characters when TNG was conceived in 1986 . According to the Star Trek: The Next Generation Companion (2nd ed., p. 15), she was merely referred to in relation to Wesley (at one point a female, called Leslie) and did not even receive her own page of background notes until the final edition of the writer's guide. The original casting call for her character was as follows:
" BEVERLY CRUSHER – Leslie's 35-year-old mother. She serves as the chief medical officer on the Enterprise . If it were not for her intelligence, personality, beauty, and the fact that she has a natural walk of a striptease queen, Capt. Picard might not have agreed to her request that Leslie observe bridge activities; therefore letting her daughter's intelligence carry events further. "
Though Gates McFadden mostly liked playing comedic roles, portraying Crusher was enjoyable for her. " I felt the producers really wanted me to be a part of it, " she remarked, " and it was nice to be wanted [....] I auditioned for the part thinking it was a very funny part because they gave me 'The Naked Now', and I thought she was going to be a hilarious character, and I ended up with the straightest and most serious character of all. " ( The Fifty-Year Mission: The Next 25 Years , p. 103)
Crusher was the only character of the core seven TNG ensemble not to have appeared on one of the subsequent Star Trek spin-offs until her return in the season three debut of Star Trek: Picard , although she had appeared in hologram form in " Kobayashi ".
Furthermore, Crusher is one of the few TNG main characters to not be seen in the DS9 style of uniforms , along with Deanna Troi.

Beverly was given the full name Beverly Cheryl Howard Crusher on StarTrek.com , in homage to Gates McFadden's real first name, Cheryl. [1] Her bio from " Conundrum " also gives "C" as her middle initial, while mistakenly listing her rank as lieutenant commander when she was already a full commander. In " Sins of The Father ", her middle initial briefly appears as "G" in an LCARS display. A medical case in " The Loss " has her middle initial as "G", as well. On an invitation to her wedding, not seen on-screen in a Picard family album from Star Trek Generations , her middle initial is given as "S." A display of her Starfleet medical profile in " The Next Generation " once again shows "C" for the middle initial.
Gates McFadden's own hair was used in seasons 1, 6 (except the first five episodes) and 7. When she returned to the show after her absence in Season 2, the producers had her wear wigs in seasons 3, 4 and 5. [2] } The wigs required over an hour of preparation time before each day of shooting. [3] McFadden's own hair was much finer and longer, but McFadden has stated that its darker color in Season 1 was difficult to maintain and that smoke and spray on set made it hard to style, so the producers switched to wigs when she returned in Season 3. But this came with its own disadvantages: her long hair was tucked beneath the wigs, which resulted in a strange shape and made her look older. Nevertheless, the producers usually used McFadden's own, longer hair in flashback or historical sequences (including in " Violations " and " Time's Arrow Part II .") From Season 6, episode 6 (" True Q ") to the end of the series and in the films, McFadden once again wore her own hair. [4] [5]
Officially, the difficulties in developing Crusher's character led to her character's departure by the second season . Unlike Natasha Yar , however, the TNG writing staff reassigned Crusher to Starfleet Medical, leaving open the possibility for her return. The writing staff's dissatisfaction with the Pulaski character and fan pressure via a letter-writing campaign allowed this to happen during the third season . ( Star Trek: The Next Generation Companion (2nd ed., pp. 64 & 98-99)) Patrick Stewart also supported McFadden's return. ( citation needed • edit )
Despite this, Gates McFadden often felt she had to lobby the writers and producers for extra screen time and dialogue, not only for her character but for Deanna Troi and other female characters. Writer and Producer Jeri Taylor had much to do with increasing the focus on Crusher's character towards the end of TNG's run, giving her the opportunity to command the Enterprise in " Descent, Part II ", eventually leading to her own command in the anti-time future of " All Good Things... ". ( citation needed • edit ) This development went largely ignored in the TNG films, except for during Star Trek: First Contact . With Riker absent and Data captured, Crusher acted as the Enterprise 's de facto first officer during the Borg crisis.
Apocrypha [ ]
Novels set after Star Trek Nemesis establish that Beverly and Picard eventually did admit their love for one another, beginning a relationship, leading to marriage and ultimately Beverly becoming pregnant with the couple's first child, Rene. ( Death in Winter , Greater than the Sum , Paths of Disharmony )
In the novels, the explanation for Beverly's parents' deaths is that when she was three (and-a-half) years old, they were killed when their research vessel was destroyed by an Ubarrak warship. From that time, she was raised by her grandmother, Felisa Howard. ( Death in Winter )
Beverly's mirror universe counterpart appears in Star Trek Online , with Gates McFadden voicing her. Her career seems to follow the story in the IDW comic series Star Trek: The Next Generation - Mirror Broken , which depicts her as becoming chief medical officer of the I.S.S. Enterprise -D under Captain Edward Jellico and later Jean-Luc Picard, as well as fostering the development of her genius son, who became Emperor after taking the powers of the Traveler . She later defies him when he plans to merge with "the Other" (the mirror counterpart of V'ger ); rather than execute her, he has her imprisoned in a maximum-security prison codenamed "the Bird Cage" and placed in the custody of "the Inquisitor", the mirror counterpart of the player character. The Inquisitor eventually leads an operation to free her from the prison, and she joins the player character's away team in the mission "The Fujiwhara Effect" to stop her son's ascension. Other versions of her mirror counterpart appear in Dark Mirror , The Worst of Both Worlds , and the Dark Passions series.

How [SPOILER]'s Appearance in the Picard Finale Closes a Star Trek: Nemesis Plot Hole
A long-lost The Next Generation character, last seen in Star Trek: Nemesis, makes a triumphant return in the Picard Season 2 finale episode.
The following contains spoilers for Star Trek: Picard’s Season 2 finale.
When the plan for Star Trek: Picard 's third season was announced to be a Next Generation reunion , some fans asked what about Wil Wheaton and Wesley Crusher? Now we know why he wasn’t included in the cast list for Season 3 -- it would have spoiled one of the Season 2 finale’s biggest surprises. Yet, seeing Wesley again also closes a plot hole created by Star Trek: Nemesis .
After helping the heroes foil the villain’s plot, Isa Briones’ Kore Soong gets a mysterious message on her tablet computer telling her to find out what comes next. She expected to meet Q, whose dealings with Dr. Soong seemed to be less about beguiling Picard and more about freeing Kore from his clutches. Yet, rather than the omnipotent chaos agent, fans see the familiar face of Wil Wheaton, again playing Wesley Crusher. And, in doing so, Picard tied together some interesting pieces of Star Trek lore to Orla Brady’s Tallin.

The clues were out there, too. When the TNG reunion was announced, Wheaton took to his website to address the fans in a blog post. He told them that he “shared some of their sadness,” and then presented a fan-fiction scene where Traveler Wesley reunites with Picard. However, the last time Star Trek fans saw Wesley, he was back in Starfleet, possibly about to serve on Captain Riker’s USS Titan . That's a big change from his final TNG ’s appearance.
In Star Trek: Nemesis , it’s obvious that the producers wanted to bring Wil Wheaton back for the movie, specifically the scenes where Riker and Troi are married. In a deleted scene, Wesley even admits he rejoined Starfleet and will join Riker on his new command. This suggests that he abandoned the Traveler’s offer to return to a more mundane Starfleet life. Yet, in Wheaton’s fan-fiction blog post, it’s not Lieutenant Crusher who meets Picard, but Wesley the Traveler. It’s the character’s rightful role.
RELATED: Picard's Patrick Stewart Describes 'Wonderful' TNG Reunion
Early on fans didn’t like Wesley because he so often came up with the solution needed to save the day. Later on in the series, the writers explained this via an episode starring a mysterious alien called “The Traveler.” He traveled through time and space, a classic Star Trek character where advanced science and mysticism blend together . He noted that there was something special about Wesley to Picard before he left. He appeared again in another episode to help Wesley save his mother. Fans wouldn’t see him again until one of the last episodes of TNG ’s final season, “Journey’s End.”
Wesley is shown feeling out of place at Starfleet Academy. He eventually resigns in protest because he believes the Federation's handling of the problem-of-the-week is wrong. He also undergoes a spiritual awakening ritual that suggests his future lies outside Starfleet. By the end of the episode, Wesley discovers he has the ability to literally “pause” time. The Traveler appears to him and gives him a slightly vaguer version of the speech Wesley gives to Kore. This storyline, while a little weird, does help justify the extraordinary abilities Wesley showed early on in the show. It retroactively edits a possible element of bad storytelling into a lore-expanding opportunity to create another branch of the universe on which stories can grow.

The Wesley Crusher fans meet in the Season 2 finale of Picard is one who either did not go back to Starfleet or did that as part of his “Traveler duties.” Explaining that Tallin was part of this nebulous group protecting the fabric of reality builds on the foundation laid by TNG and the Traveler episodes . It’s a group not unlike Starfleet’s Department of Temporal Investigations, but with a much less militaristic vibe. That fits with what we know of Wesley, who was always played as a bit of a hothead who wasn’t a big fan of following the rules.
It's possible that fans will see more of Wesley in Picard S eason 3, especially since he took Isa Briones with him. She plays multiple characters, though, so the actor can return to the series without needing Wesley. Yet, chances are, Traveler Wesley will have a role to play beyond Wil Wheaton’s regular gig hosting the Star Trek promotional series The Ready Room. Now, the only question that remains is what have the rest of the Enterprise-D crew been up to?
You can see how chill Wesley has become for yourself by streaming Star Trek: Picard Season 2 on Paramount+.

Star Trek: Nemesis – What Went Wrong?
Star Trek: Nemesis was supposed to lead into another Next Generation movie, had all gone to plan. It didn't. So what happened?

1996’s Star Trek: First Contact took $150 million worldwide, on a budget of $46 million. 1998’s Star Trek: Insurrection managed to swallow a budget of $70 million and only return $118 worldwide, but after the critical feedback about that film, surely a darker action film along the same lines as First Contact would jump the box office back up?
That appeared to be the thought pattern at Paramount, as it greenlit a further adventure for the Star Trek: The Next Generation cast. Star Trek: Nemesis was born.
The film, released in December 2002 in the US, would go on to take $67 million at the global box office, off the back of a $60 million budget. It’d sell 1.3m DVDs in its first week in America, and in the scheme of things, was a financial disappointment.
On box office numbers alone, the film wouldn’t have crawled its way into the black. But the DVD steered it away from red ink, the disc being one of the most pre-ordered retail DVDs in the US and UK come the time of its release.

But why did Star Trek: Nemesis take so little at the box office? Well, let’s leave the critical view of the film to one side for the moment, as it was nowhere near as one sided in 2002 as it is now, with hindsight.
Looking at other theatrical releases around the same time, this relatively low-budget film was up against the behemoths of the second Harry Potter ( Chamber Of Secrets ) and the second of Peter Jackson’s Lord Of The Rings films ( The Two Towers ). 007 was also kicking around with Die Another Day . It would be fair to say that the competition was tough.
Looking at the budgets and worldwide box office takings, Potter cost $100 million and took $879 million, Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers cost $94 million and took $935 million while 007 cost $142 million and took $432 million.
It’s not hard to come to the conclusion that the film simply got overlooked. After all, Star Trek is a product of the small screen and up against the cinematic experiences on offer from the other films, it’s hardly surprising that cinema-goers may have simply decided to wait to see the film… if they even knew it was out.
With movie theaters desperately trying to get more showings of the other films in each day, it’s no surprise that the number of screens showing Nemesis dropped dramatically, very quickly. Paramount knew all this, though. The decision to go up against The Two Towers was made specifically to catch those who couldn’t get a ticket to the sold out fantasy epic. Indeed the pressure from the studio, and Rick Berman as its representative, was to cut the film’s running time, with the alleged intent to allow it to be shown more times a day per screen compared with Jackson’s film running at 172 minutes. History shows, however, that this strategy didn’t work.
Nemesis came as a bit of a surprise, to Patrick Stewart at least, as with the completion of Star Trek: Insurrection the contracts of the core cast (except perhaps, Michael Dorn due to his involvement on Deep Space Nine ) were complete and none had any ongoing commitment to the studio or further Star Trek films. It was a phone call between Brent Spiner and his friend (and huge Star Trek fan) John Logan, the writer of Ridley Scott’s Gladiator , that led to the film’s development. One can only speculate how costly a one-film contract for the cast would have been.
An underlying theme of Star Trek: Nemesis was supposed to be that of the crew moving on and the family that they had become branching out into new experiences and adventures. Not only were Will Riker and Deanna Troi marrying and moving to the USS Titan (with the newly promoted Captain Riker taking command) but cut scenes also made it clearer that Data was to become the new first officer of the Enterprise, while Doctor Crusher was also leaving to head up Starfleet Medical (again). Cutting the film for time took out 50 minutes of footage (according to producer Rick Berman), though it’s believed most of that had not been fully completed (missing effects shots and the like).

However it does appear that an awful lot of character moments – essentially the heart, the Star Trek core of this film, were removed, leaving what is often thought of as a hollow action film by many. Behind the scenes friction can’t have helped while filming, either.
In a revelation that will shock few who have seen the film, Stuart Baird (helmer of films such as Executive Decision and US Marshalls , and long-time film editor) had no knowledge of Star Trek before becoming director of Nemesis . He even refused to watch any of the Next Generation TV series to prepare (and reportedly went so far to say he hated the franchise, and had to be forced to watch the preceding films, allegedly), so it’s no wonder so many fans feel the characters act strangely.
It’s reported that the director even kept calling LeVar Burton ‘Laverne’ and thought Commander LaForge was an alien. If you watch some of the extras on the DVD and the extra-extras on the Blu-ray it comes across that the majority of the cast were less than enamored with the director.
Jeri Ryan was approached to reprise Seven Of Nine in Nemesis and the part would have required a couple of months of filming, according to the actress. This was something Paramount wanted and Rick Berman was intending to plug her into the film. The actress had more sense, and even had to tell the production team that Seven being at the wedding reception in the movie would have made no sense bearing in mind the character hadn’t met any of the Next Generation crew. As a result, Vice Admiral Janeway makes a brief appearance to give Captain Picard orders instead, which some fans found a bit odd.
Star Trek: Nemesis Deleted Scenes
The filmed scenes that didn’t make the final cut-to-the-bones version that was released included the Captain sharing a bottle of Chateau Picard with Data just after the wedding reception. Another was Commander Worf and Commander LaForge rounding up Commander Data’s belongings in his quarters following his apparent death, with Spot (Data’s cat) taking a shine to the son of Mogh.
The original plan for the opening credits was to show snippets of Shinzon’s life, specifically his banishment to the Reman mines, and the brutality he was forced to endure before his now Viceroy came to protect him. A much more abbreviated version of this footage was used later in the film in the end.

An unused alternate ending (also on the DVD and Blu-ray release), reveals the Enterprise in dry dock getting one hell of a refit, with a raft of new features, including a new Captain’s chair with seatbelts, demonstrated by a Starfleet engineer to the Captain much to Worf’s protestation.
In the same sequence Captain Riker tells the new First Officer, a Commander Martin Madden (taking the deceased Data’s intended place, and played by soon to be MACO Commander on Enterprise , Steven Culp) to take an informal stance on dealing with Captain Picard much to both Captain Riker’s anticipated and Commander LaForge’s on-screen amusement. Worf, again, was a little more wide eyed.
Thanks to LeVar Burton having a word with Rick Berman, Wil Wheaton finally makes an appearance as Wesley Crusher in a Star Trek: The Next Generation film. If you’re watching in widescreen, and you pay attention, that is. Wesley is seen at the left edge of the screen, during the wedding reception, in Starfleet uniform depicting his rank as Lieutenant in Engineering yellow.
However, here’s another wonderful little bit of footage, that was cut and really ought to have been left in. Wil had some lines with Gates and Patrick. The footage revealed that Captain Picard was happy to see him in uniform again, and though somewhat distracted by a young female guest, Wes reveals he’s gained an assignment on the night duty shift in Engineering aboard the U.S.S. Titan, Will Riker’s new command.
Watching further extras on the Blu-ray offers snippets of alternative or extended versions of scenes where more of the characters we knew from The Next Generation shone through the action film surroundings. Plus, there’s a film test of Tom Hardy feeling his way into the role of Shinzon (with obvious relish in portraying the distanced lost soul of the character) opposite an in-uniform Patrick Stewart. That too suggests more meat to their interactions.
In another documentary-type extra feature, LeVar Burton explains it was good to have John Logan on board, to look after the film’s characters. It’s not hard to take the inference that no-one else was, and Lore (Data’s other brother) is mentioned, suggesting that he had not been forgotten when developing the story. Does that, perhaps, suggest further cut dialogue at least mentioning Data’s evil twin?
Those extras on the DVD and Blu-ray release really do paint a picture of a different film that should have had a heart, and I strongly recommend exploring all the extras on the home releases of the film which puts a whole other light on the production… and leads you to discover Patrick Stewart’s enjoyment of the Argo all terrain vehicle as supplied by Ivan ‘Ironman’ Stewart!
Indeed even Patrick Stewart went on record to state (in an interview with Dreamwatch ): “I think if there was ever a real need for an extended edition of any work we have done, it would be Nemesis .” He went on to say “It wouldn’t be a Director’s Cut of the film..that may have been even shorter, but maybe an Actor’s Cut.”
Stuart Baird, however, commented that though Nemesis was “trimmed to the wire” and that any extended cut would be for the actors, and nothing to do with him.
What Star Trek XI Could Have Been
Star Trek: Nemesis left dangling threads, on purpose, as a story treatment for a direct sequel was already being worked on. The follow up film would have picked up on the slow re-establishment of Data’s neural net within B-4, as was hinted at the end of Nemesis . Probably in a way that was alluded to by Ambassador Spock, when he met his ‘old friend’ Captain Data, in command of the Enterprise-E in the official prequel to the 2009 Star Trek film, Countdown .

Other plans for the film included showing a little more of Starfleet than we had seen previously in the franchise’s cinematic outings, and according to multiple accounts, would have brought in characters from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager (depending on who was available). This may well have seen the starships Enterprise, Titan, Defiant, and Voyager unifying threads from all three series in a conclusion to that entire era of Star Trek , perhaps truly coming to the end of a whole generation’s final journey. Packing all that into two to three hours may have been a tall order.
Is Nemesis as bad as people seem to think it is? I would say not, and it’s not as bad as The Final Frontier or Generations . Would the film have been significantly better if Jonathan Frakes or LeVar Burton had directed? Quite possibly, but we can never be sure. Would it have made more money if either of those cast members directed? Not entirely sure it could have made any less, to be honest. A change in release date to avoid the competition would have helped it far more moneywise.
Unfortunately finishing off special effects and creating an ‘Actor’s Cut’ of the film is less than likely, so we’ll probably never see the film as it was written – just what was left after garden shears were used in the editing room.
Would such an extended cut be a better film? Based on just the deleted scenes on the home releases, many have suggested it would not have made that much of a difference. I personally disagree and the scenes mentioned above are part of the film to me. However it seems there is far more footage to integrate than those few scenes.
Would an Actor’s Cut be better Star Trek? In my mind that’s without doubt, but with that material being less ‘cinematic’ I am feeling that Star Trek is, and always will be, a better experience when allowed to be presented in a longer, televisual form that only a mini-series or season can bring.

Wil Wheaton says Wesley Crusher isn’t canon in Star Trek: Nemesis
By rachel carrington | apr 22, 2022.
Wil Wheaton was in a deleted scene in Star Trek: Nemesis.
Back in 2002, Wil Wheaton’s character, Wesley Crusher, made a surprise appearance at the wedding of Captain Will Riker and Counselor Deanna Troi. He appeared in a Starfleet dress uniform as a lieutenant and even talked to Captain Picard about how happy he was to be joining the crew of the Titan, the ship Riker was leaving Enterprise to captain. It was a brief moment of less than a minute, but that scene was deleted, and Wesley wasn’t seen again in the movie. Even though the scene can still be seen (see video below), according to Wil Wheaton who spoke at Star Trek: Mission Chicago [ via Trekmovie ], it is not canon. This comes from an official Star Trek declaration.
"I will also add, because I know this to be true, this is an official Star Trek declaration: the piece of Wesley in Star Trek: Nemesis in the stuff that’s been cut from the movie is not canonical. Very important… The impression that a certain amount of fandom has that Wesley is a lieutenant about to serve on the Titan is not canonical because it was cut from the movie… Which means, that my headcanon, that Wesley as a Traveler is a little bit closer maybe actually being more like what, if anything, the people who do Star Trek might have in mind."
So where does Wil Wheaton think Wesley Crusher is?
Wheaton thinks Wesley continued as a Traveler, and not only that, he became a Time Lord which allowed him to move through time and space. He used this scenario in his mind to explain how Wesley could appear at Riker and Troi’s wedding if the scene had remained in. The actor admits that he has written his own fan fiction about his character so he has given this a lot of thought.
To explain Wesley’s appearance at the wedding, Wheaton said that Wesley, as a Traveler, would know every moment that happens, and he would have wanted to be at the wedding of his friends. But he couldn’t have appeared as a god-like being so showing up as a lieutenant sounded like the one thing that would have made sense as it would make everyone more comfortable.
"“So Wesley really wanted to be at this moment. He knows that this moment happens. He knows every moment that happens. It’s just part of the terrible knowledge that comes with being a Traveler guy, I guess. And Wesley made a choice: How will they expect me to appear? What will make them comfortable? If I show up as a god-being, it’s going make everything weird and make it all about me and I don’t want it to be that. If I just show up as like a lieutenant… that sounds like a thing that would make sense. Sure, let’s do that. But I get to be at the wedding of my very closest friends and family and I get to see them.”"
Since the wedding scene was deleted, however, Wesley’s actual whereabouts remain a mystery. After he left the Enterprise and became a Traveler, he never returned to visit his friends or family. So, in Star Trek canon, Wesley still exists as a Traveler. Maybe he could show up one day in a future episode of one of the Star Trek series. After all, he can travel through time.

Star trek: picard's tng cameo fixes a 30-year mistake.
A major surprise cameo in Star Trek: Picard season 2's finale fixes an infamous mistake made by Star Trek: The Next Generation over 30 years ago.
Caution: spoilers ahead for Star Trek: Picard 's season 2 finale
Star Trek: Picard 's big season 2 finale cameo corrects a Star Trek: The Next Generation wrong - over 30 years later. The closing chapter of Jean-Luc Picard's 21st century adventure is full of surprises. The Borg are friendly now, Rios has broken rules 1, 2 and 3 of time travel, and... hang on, is that Wesley Crusher?! Played by Wil Wheaton, Wesley departed the Enterprise-D to travel time and space alongside The Traveler. Wheaton then returned in 2002's Star Trek: Nemesis wearing Starfleet regalia, but Star Trek: Picard season 2 reveals Wesley Crusher resumed his transcendental journey and became a guardian of space and time, dispatching supervisors like Tallinn to protect key events in history.
It's no exaggeration to say Wesley Crusher was the punchline of Star Trek: The Next Generation . Having a cocky young genius aboard Jean-Luc Picard's Enterprise went down like a cup of cold Earl Grey, with Wil Wheaton's character notoriously attracting backlash during Star Trek: The Next Generation 's early seasons. Said backlash was unfairly aimed toward Wheaton himself, when the actual issue was how Wesley was being written and presented. Crusher's legacy suffered further after an acrimonious exit stemming from a clash between Wheaton and specific Star Trek: The Next Generation producers.
Related: Picard: Seven Of Nine's S2 Ending Fulfills Janeway's Starfleet Promise
Following some time away in the aftermath of his Star Trek: The Next Generation departure, Wil Wheaton has more recently gravitated back into the franchise fold, even presenting Star Trek: Picard 's post-show, The Ready Room . The closing chapter of Star Trek: Picard season 2 finally bites the bullet and propels Wheaton back into the fictional realm. No single scene can totally erase the errors Star Trek: The Next Generation made with Wesley Crusher, but Wheaton's Star Trek: Picard cameo certainly takes a big step in that direction. Becoming a mysterious, kindhearted timeline watcher helping other lost souls who find themselves lacking meaning and direction (like Kore) not only pays off Wesley's Star Trek: The Next Generation ending, but provides a fitting final note to his overall journey - a tangible outcome to his natural genius and lessons learned in Starfleet.
Wesley Crusher's return effectively retcons Star Trek: Nemesis , which implied the controversial youngster had resumed his Starfleet career. Boomeranging right back to Starfleet service represented a disappointing end compared to walking the lines between reality with The Traveler. By reverting back to Wesley's original ending from Star Trek: The Next Generation . Star Trek: Picard fixes that error, restoring Wesley Crusher's mystical significance rather than leaving him as just another Starfleet officer we never heard from again.
Another major Wesley Crusher fix in Star Trek: Picard concerns his improved personality. On the Enterprise-D, Wesley proved incredibly difficult to like, but when he tells Kore about how a misplaced joke once changed a century's worth of history - all while grimacing in awkwardness - that's Wil Wheaton's affable charm poking through. Star Trek: The Next Generation rarely allowed Wesley such moments of brevity, and it's a shame it took transforming into an interdimensional patrolman to coax those qualities out.
When Star Trek: Picard season 3 was confirmed to include fan favorites from Star Trek: The Next Generation , Wesley Crusher's absence did not go unnoticed online - a glowing endorsement of his Star Trek reevaluation. Omitting Wesley from the reunion would've been a glaring error, but dropping his cameo a season early gives Wesley Crusher the Star Trek closure he deserves.

Every Picard Family Member In Star Trek
- Jean-Luc Picard's family is vast, with generations of explorers and winemakers, including a son named Jack Crusher but no lasting romantic relationships.
- Picard's family extends beyond blood, with members like Elnor considered honorary Picards, and even Laris nearly becoming his romantic partner.
- Family ties play a significant role in Picard's character development, as he confronts the memories of his parents and reconciles with his son, Jack Crusher.
Admiral Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) belongs to an expansive family that has been spotlighted in Star Trek: Picard and Star Trek: The Next Generation . Jean-Luc famously avoided a lasting romantic relationship for most of his 90+ years, but he and Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden) spent years dancing around one another on TNG . Sometime after the events of Star Trek: Nemesis , the two conceived a son named Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers), although Beverly kept Jack's existence a secret from Jean-Luc out of fear for her son's safety. While Jack may not hold the Picard name, the Picard family legacy is a proud one that spans generations of explorers and winemakers .
The Picard family is one of the largest in Star Trek , and there have been more Picards seen or referenced in TNG and Picard than any other character's family. Jean-Luc's parents, brother, ancestor, and even his dog have all appeared . One could even consider Elnor (Eva Evagora), the Romulan warrior-turned-Starfleet Cadet Jean-Luc has known since he was a boy, to be an unofficial member of the Picard family. By the end of Star Trek: Picard season 2 , Jean-Luc was also finally ready to romantically commit to Laris (Orla Brady), but the events of Picard season 3 sent him in a very different direction.
Star Trek: Picard - All 3 Seasons Ranked Worst To Best
Jean-luc picard, star trek: the next generation, the tng films, & star trek: picard.
Admiral Jean-Luc Picard is a Starfleet legend and one of the greatest starship Captains in history. Jean-Luc was already in his 50s when he was assigned as Captain of the USS Enterprise-D, the flagship of the United Federation of Planets. Picard was Captain of the Enterprise for over 15 years, spanning 7 seasons of Star Trek: The Next Generation and 4 TNG movies , and he saved the galaxy numerous times. In the 2380s, Picard was promoted to Admiral and led what became the Federation's aborted mission to rescue the Romulan people from their sun going supernova. Jean-Luc died of a degenerative brain disorder at the end of Star Trek: Picard season 1 , but he was resurrected in a synthetic body that gave him a new lease on life.
In Star Trek : Picard season 3, Jean-Luc's brain disorder was revealed to be the result of residual Borg DNA left over from his time as Locutus. Jean-Luc unfortunately passed this Borg DNA onto his son, Jack.
As chronicled by Star Trek: Picard, Jean-Luc has changed a lot since TNG , and the retired Admiral had a resurgence after a decade-and-a-half away from Starfleet. Picard and his new motley crew stopped a Romulan plot to wipe out a planet of synthetics, which foiled an invasion of androids from beyond the galaxy. Jean-Luc and his friends then reset the timeline after Q (John de Lancie) changed reality into a dark universe ruled by the Confederation of Planets. Picard season 3 saw Jean-Luc reunite with his TNG crew aboard the rebuilt USS Enterprise-D for one final galaxy-saving mission . Not only did Picard get to reconnect with old friends, but he also learned about the existence of his son, Jack Crusher.
Yvette Picard, Jean-Luc's Mother
Star trek: picard season 2.
Jean-Luc finally confronted the memories of his mother and put her to rest, emerging mentally and emotionally healthier.
Jean-Luc's beloved mother, Yvette Picard (Madeline Wise), had a pivotal role in Star Trek: Picard season 2. Yvette suffered from severe mental health issues and committed suicide when Jean-Luc was just a boy. The young Picard blamed himself, but he also buried his trauma deeply. Jean-Luc's ordeal with his beloved mama was revealed to be the cause of why Picard chose not to pursue a lasting romantic relationship . Jean-Luc finally confronted the memories of his mother and put her to rest, emerging mentally and emotionally healthier. This allowed Jean-Luc to be more open in Picard season 3, as he reconnected with his old crew and got to know the son he didn't know he had.
The retcon of Yvette in Star Trek: Picard contradicts an elderly Yvette Picard (Herta Ware) appearing in Star Trek: The Next Generation.
Maurice Picard, Jean-Luc's Father
Jean-Luc was never close to his father, Maurice Picard (James Callis), who the son felt was a cold and distant man. Jean-Luc's memories of his father physically abusing his mother were revealed to be mistaken, as in reality, Maurice tried to protect himself and his sons from his wife's degenerative mental state . Maurice was a traditionalist who prioritized his family's Chateau Picard vineyard in La Barre, France. Jean-Luc faced his father's memory and reassessed what he knew about Maurice in Star Trek: Picard season 2.
An elderly Maurice (Clive Church) also appeared in Star Trek: The Next Generation season 6, episode 15, "Tapestry," as part of an illusion conjured by Q.
Robert Picard, Jean-Luc's Brother
Star trek: the next generation.
Robert and Jean-Luc finally reconciled in "Family," which became the last time they saw each other.
Jean-Luc was estranged from his older brother, Robert Picard (Jeremy Kemp), who appeared in TNG season 4, episode 2, "Family." Robert and Jean-Luc resented each other as the older brother stayed behind in France to raise a family and tend to the family's vineyard, while the younger brother joined Starfleet to become a celebrated starship Captain. Robert and Jean-Luc finally reconciled in "Family," which became the last time they saw each other. Robert and his own family died in a house fire offscreen in Star Trek Generations. Robert was also curiously absent from Jean-Luc's flashbacks to his childhood in Star Trek: Picard season 2.
Every Picard TNG Love Interest (Before Laris)
Marie & rené picard, jean-luc's sister-in-law & nephew.
Marie Picard (Samantha Egger) was Robert's wife, and René (David Tristan Birkin) was their young son, both of whom Jean-Luc met in the TNG episode, "Family." Marie, a homemaker, was kinder and more welcoming to Jean-Luc than his brother was, while Robert feared that his son was a dreamer who wanted to explore the stars like his uncle . Tragically, Robert, Marie, and René all perished in a fire in Star Trek Generations , although Jean-Luc encountered a vision of René (Christopher James Miller) while he was in the Nexus.
Renée Picard, Jean-Luc's 21st Century Ancestor
Dr. Renée Picard (Penelope Mitchell) was a NASA astronaut and the leader of the Europa mission to Jupiter in the early 21st century. Like Jean-Luc's mother, Yvette, the brilliant Renée suffered from depression and other mental health issues, which nearly prevented her destiny to discover a climate-altering microorganism on Jupiter's moon, Io. Renée was the focal point that Q had to erase in order to change the timeline , but she was also protected by a Romulan Supervisor named Tallinn (Orla Brady). Jean-Luc met Renée and ensured that she played her crucial role which determined the future in Star Trek: Picard season 2 .
Jean-Luc's Other Relatives
Star trek: the next generation & star trek: picard.
In Star Trek: The Next Generation season 4, episode 17, "Night Terrors," Jean-Luc mentioned his unnamed grandfather, lamenting that he watched his grandfather's physical and mental deterioration. Jean-Luc also had an aunt named Adele who was famed for her home remedies. When addressing Starfleet Academy as Chancellor in Star Trek: Picard season 2 , Jean-Luc spoke of his ancestor who captained the second ship after Jacques Cartier . TNG also mentioned Javier Maribona-Picard, an explorer who lived in the 17th century.
Shinzon, Jean-Luc's Clone
Star trek: nemesis.
The most unusual "Picard" was Shinzon (Tom Hardy), a clone of Jean-Luc's bred by the Romulans in an aborted plot to replace the Captain of the Enterprise. As seen in Star Trek: Nemesis , the young Shinzon was banished to the mines of Remus, but he led a Reman revolt that resulted in the deaths of the Romulan Senate . Shinzon was installed as the new Praetor, and he implemented his plot to destroy Jean-Luc Picard and the United Federation of Planets. Shinzon suffered from Shalaft's syndrome, but he ultimately perished in the explosion of the thalaron weapon he intended to use against the Federation.
8 Ways Star Trek Has Made Sure Nemesis No Longer Matters
Number one, jean-luc's dog, star trek: picard seasons 1 & 2.
Of course, one cannot forget Number One, a male pit bull and the loyal pet of Jean-Luc Picard. Number One lives on Chateau Picard in La Barre, France, and he is named for Jean-Luc's friend and former First Officer of the Enterprise, Captain William T. Riker (Jonathan Frakes) . Patrick Stewart himself suggested that Picard should have a dog, and advocated for it to be a rescued pit bull, as he has fostered and worked with pit bull rescue organizations in the past. Portrayed by a rescue dog named Dinero, Number One appeared in Star Trek: Picard seasons 1 and 2 , but was unfortunately absent from Picard season 3.
Jack Crusher, Jean-Luc's son
Star trek: picard season 3.
Jack Crusher is a chip off the old Picard block and proves it by becoming a Starfleet Ensign on the USS Enterprise-G.
In Star Trek: Picard season 3, Jean-Luc Picard learns he has a biological son named Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers) with Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden). Now an adult, Jack Crusher slowly begins to get to know his father, even as he winds up being central to the Changeling/Borg plot to destroy the Federation. Jack carried a lifelong trauma borne from the organic Borg DNA he unwittingly inherited from Picard.
Jack's British accent is because he grew up in London and the accent "stuck. "
The young Crusher nearly succumbed to his destiny to become Vox of Borg before Picard saved his son. Star Trek: Picard season 3 ended with Jack, Beverly, and Jean-Luc together as a new family. Jack Crusher is a chip off the old Picard block and proves it by becoming a Starfleet Ensign on the USS Enterprise-G, and he even attracts the unwanted attention of Q when Star Trek: Picard season 3 comes to a close.
Star Trek: The Next Generation & Star Trek: Picard are available to stream on Paramount+. The TNG films are available on Max.

VADIC CHANGELING AVENGER
The Shrike captain announces herself as Vadic (Amanda Plummer), leader of a rogue faction of Changelings, liquid-based shapeshifters from the Gamma Quadrant. "Amanda Plummer was the only person I ever thought of for this role," states Terry Matalas. "Early on, I didn’t know that she would do it. I knew that Amanda had Star Trek lineage as her father, Christopher Plummer, played General Chang in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country .
To our delight, she said ‘yes’ and she brought so much to the character. She made Vadic one of the great Star Trek villains."
Vadic’s tortured history sprang from a clandestine operation, an offshoot of the Dominion War against the Federation. "They were held captive on Daystrom Station by a nefarious group within Starfleet, Section 31," Matalas explains. "They were trying to make Changelings that were undetectable down to an organ level in a way that Changelings had not been before. Vadic and her people escaped from that lab with their new abilities, and they found a like-minded dying species, the Borg, who teamed up with them to put an end to Starfleet once and for all."
The makeup team explored designs for Vadic and her Changelings that acknowledged their genetic origins, as seen in Deep Space Nine ’s amorphous shapeshifting security chief Odo (René Auberjonois), with a twist. "We tried a variety of prosthetic designs for Vadic," recalls Vincent Van Dyke. "We ended up creating scars as a design element on her face. They were quite symmetrical, even beautiful. The idea was these were scars that had injured her, symmetrically, on each side of her body. Technically, they were quite simple for us to create, not extensive makeup. But what a wonderful actress."
"Amanda was fantastic," concurs James MacKinnon. "Talking to her about what we were going to do, she was very particular, and quiet. But when she started talking about how she was going to play the part, it was awesome to watch. We ended up taking the color out of her eyebrows. We gave her a pale face and some cheek scars as silicone transfers. The idea was that, as a Changeling, she’d been partway through forming into another character when she stopped and that left subtle scarring on her face. We gave those scars a natural lip color."
"Changelings loyal to Vadic carry disruptor weapons illicitly acquired on their travels through the Delta Quadrant. Vadic brandished a femme-fatale-style smoking device. "Terry and Amanda wanted her to be wreathed in smoke sitting on her bridge," recalls Jeff Lombardi. "We’ve not seen many aliens smoking cigarettes before in Star Trek . Amanda does smoke, which helped. We got her blend that she was comfortable with, and we designed an alien cigarette holder and different papers. It was a simple device, the end of the holder held a rolled joint and the two melded together as a smoking apparatus. We also gave her some old French lighters and a Romulan knife — one of the Reman blades that Picard’s clone, Shinzon, had used in Star Trek Nemesis ."
