Get The Most Out Of Your Hashtag Strategy

While it’s tempting to go for the top hashtags that have millions of posts, it’s best to keep to this smart strategy:

  • About 2 hashtags that have more than 1 million posts
  • 6 to 8 that are between 500,000 and 1 million posts
  • 6 to 8 that are between 250,000 and 500,000
  • 8 to 10 under 250,000

This gives you anywhere between 22 to 28 hashtags that you’re using, enough to give you visibility.

Instagram’s maximum recommended total for hashtags is 30.

I tend to use about 20 hashtags, as that’s my sweet spot – but for me, lately, it’s mostly home decor posts as I’m doing less travelling (that’s when this list of home decor hashtags comes in handy).

Editing Your Travel Photos

My ultimate favourite phone app for travel edits is Lightroom .

The free version is good – and you can add your own presets to it. The upgraded version gives you more controls for better editing, especially when it comes to landscape photography.

Break up your photos with some fun quotes and visuals using your nature photos – like I did here with one of my photos.

A foggy, mossy woodland scene as an example of a Canva Instagram post template.

Online photo editors such as Be Funky and Pixlr also have design capabilities making them powerful one-stop photo editing and design creation tools.

How to develop a hashtag strategy for your travel brand

africa travel hashtags

Whether you’re just setting up your brand’s social media handles, or you’ve been on Instagram for a while, having a hashtag strategy is key to increasing the visibility of your travel brand, writes Albertine Brandon .

A hashtag strategy is basically a plane for how you will increase the visibility of your brand (and engagements on your posts) on Instagram using hashtags. It’s a comprehensive list of the hashtags you will use for each post you share to ensure your organic content is reaching the maximum amount of people each time. This list will need to be updated regular to reach fresh, new audiences.

Your hashtag strategy may be broad (a set of 100+ relevant hashtags you will dip into for each post you share) or very specific (a tailored set of 30 hashtags for each post). The more specific you can be with your hashtag strategy, the better.

The aim of building a hashtag strategy is to find hashtags that are relevant to your post, but not so popular (500,000+ posts on a hashtag is when you’re likely to see less impact of using hashtags) that your posts don’t get any visibility on them. Using a set of 30 relevant, niche hashtags can see your post’s engagement explode overnight and can really help your brand to reach the right people on Instagram.

You should regularly build on your hashtag strategy, finding new hashtags to add to your lists and use on your posts. Also, keep an eye out for  ‘banned’ hashtags  to ensure your posts’ reach isn’t limited!

Why do I need a hashtag strategy?

Take a look at your brand’s most recent posts to Instagram. How many of their impressions were down to hashtags? If you’re seeing a low number, or no impressions at all from hashtags then it’s time to commit to a hashtag strategy.

Putting aside some time to properly plan the hashtags you will use for your brand, and on each individual post, can result in thousands of impressions for your brand’s posts, an increased number of follows from each post and increases in the number of times your posts are shared or saved by Instagram users.

Getting your strategy right can put your brand on the social media map and help you to grow a niche following who are truly interested in your brand and what you offer. This is especially important right now while the majority of leisure travel is on pause!

By using niche, relevant hashtags for each of your posts, you’re putting your content in front of people who are searching for similar posts. It’s a great way to get the attention of your ideal customer and can help you to find out more about the style of content they enjoy seeing on social media.

How can a hashtag strategy benefit my travel brand?

The amount of people  travelling for leisure purposes is greatly reduced right now . By developing and implementing a hashtag strategy you can make sure your brand is getting more visibility than your competitors, which will in turn increase the chances of travellers booking with you in the future.

Staying relevant on social media is crucial right now. The brands that do will be able to capitalise once people’s confidence is restored in the travel industry. Just because people aren’t travelling right now, doesn’t mean they’re not dreaming of it! Providing that wanderlust on Instagram can be a great way to engage future travellers, and ensure you’re the person they book with once they’re ready to travel again.

A good hashtag strategy is free marketing, it costs nothing to add the right hashtags to your posts and you’ll see the results as soon as you start doing it right. If you have great Instagram content, it’s a great way to grow your brand’s audience rapidly on the platform with no spend required.

What types of hashtags should I use for my travel brand?

When it comes to hashtags, you should go as niche as you can. This will ensure you’re targeting your ideal audience with every post and being seen by people with similar values.

For example, if you were a luxury resort in Bali, your hashtags should be focused around Bali, luxury travel, island destinations and resorts.

If you’re not sure where to start, begin by jotting down the keywords that describe your brand. From here, you can research the relevant hashtags for each of these keywords. You can find relevant hashtags on Instagram by searching your keyword and seeing what suggested hashtags come up. Try to go for a mix of popular and less used hashtags for the biggest impact, avoiding any that are really popular (1,000,000+ posts) as it’s unlikely your posts will reach the top page or even stay at the top of the recent page for long.

For each of your individual posts, you can follow the same method. For example, if the image was of yoga taking place on the beach, your keywords might be beach holiday, island destinations, wellness travel, yoga retreats. Aim to use 30 relevant hashtags on each post. This is the maximum amount of hashtags that Instagram allows you to use, and if they’re all relevant it will ensure you get maximum reach for each post you share.

Why should I avoid popular travel hashtags?

You might think using the most popular hashtags will mean your posts reach more people, but this isn’t necessarily true. Hashtags with more than 1 million posts are used by a lot of people, so when you use them as well it’s unlikely you’re going to hit the ‘top’ page unless your account has a big following (we’re talking 100k or more).

The best thing to do is to aim to use hashtags that are popular, but with 500,000 posts or less. This way you are benefitting from their popularity without getting lost in the thousands of posts uploaded using them each day.

Another thing worth mentioning is that popular hashtags can sometimes end up being banned by Instagram. This is because they often get spammed with irrelevant posts from untrustworthy accounts. If you want to see if a hashtag you’re using is banned, look it up on Instagram and it will display a message saying the hashtag is considered banned and may not show relevant posts.

How will I know my hashtag strategy is working?

The most obvious way to find out if your hashtag strategy is working is by looking at the impressions your posts are getting from hashtags. To find this, you will need to have a Business account on Instagram. Click on ‘view insights’ on your post and scroll down to see the impressions breakdown. This will tell you exactly how many are coming from hashtags. If you can’t see ‘from hashtags’ in the list, then that means your impressions from them is 0.

Once your hashtag strategy is up and running, compare the ‘from hashtags’ impressions of your most recent posts to older posts that you didn’t apply hashtag strategy to. Seeing a huge increase here is evidence that your hashtag strategy is working.

If you feel like your hashtag impressions still aren’t as high as you want them to be, it’s time to look at the quality of your content. Higher quality photos and video will perform better on hashtag pages. You could even play around with some  A/B testing  to see if slight variations in colour scheme or the angle of a photo change its performance for a particular set of hashtags.

Keeping testing out different sets of hashtags and different images/videos to see what performs best, and then build your strategy from there. Following this advice will really help to increase your brand’s exposure on social media and engage your target audience.

The best way to get your posts noticed and boost your following is by narrowing down your audience by destination. Most travelers are usually more interested in the culture and destinations of specific regions. Plus, it’s a subtle way to tell people where you are without using too many words. And you will get traffic from locals and inspired wanderlusts.

Start off with using regional travel hashtags, like #exploreasia or #EuropeTravel .

Next, you can break it down by country. For example, if you are in Malaysia, you can use hashtags like #exploremalaysia or just simply #malaysia , along with state hashtags like #kualalumpur , #sabah and #langkawi . To get even more specific, you can even tag the neighbourhood you’re in, like #mountaustinjb .

Some destinations have quirky and creative travel hashtags that truly highlight what the place has to offer. Think about any puns or specialities of the place you are visiting, like #amsterdamgram and #iamsterdam , or #balivin .

If you’re still unsure of the best travel hashtags to use for your destination, one tip is to check out the location tag and see what others are saying. You might even find an account or two to follow!

All in all, hashtags are a subtle and versatile way to find your travel community and be seen on Instagram. What are some of your top travel hashtags that we have not mentioned?

Hashtag Tips

When hashtagging, it’s important not to overload or spam your posts with hashtags that don’t work and could result in you getting shadow-banned.

The trick is to use a few generic and a few niche specific hashtags to give you the best reach – just make sure they are always relevant to the photo, video or story you’ve posted.

The Ultimate Guide To Instagram Hashtags: Travel Edition

The other day, I posted a blog on gaining Instagram followers which ended up becoming my most-read post on this site. I figured I’d try switching it up from my usual travel blogs and writing a few more posts on social media growth, which has been my area of expertise long before I started traveling frequently.

Since I started with my travel page on Instagram , I have experimented with hundreds of travel hashtags and have basically narrowed it down. I have about 15 travel hashtags that I use for every post and then enjoy a little bit of freedom with the other 15 to use based on location and the content of the picture.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by eli solidum | 📍 mexico 🇲🇽 (@thepartyingtraveler)

In case you missed my post on gaining Instagram followers,  I covered how crucial hashtags are to growing your Instagram following. You can use up to 30 hashtags on a post, and by using the 5 dot trick, no one will even notice the annoying block of hashtag text on your post.

Anyway, this post will be relatively brief as hashtag usage is pretty self-explanatory. It’ll be as comprehensive of a list as I can come up with, but obviously, everyone is going to have different accounts and therefore have different combinations that will work best for them. However, you can never go wrong with certain travel hashtags, and these are some of my favorites.

UPDATE: Instagram has enacted some changes to limit hashtag usage. Read my updated guide here for details on the changes and how to adapt

For travel photos in general:.

Any variant of the words “travel,” “explore,” or “wander”.

  • #Travel #Traveling #Travelers #Traveler #Explore #Exploring #Explorer #Wander #Wanderer #Wanderlust

You can add any word to travel honestly.

  • #TravelBug #SoloTravel #TravelBlogger #TravelPhotography #TravelDiary #TravelersJournal #TravelLife #TravelPics #TravelTips #TravelGirls #TravelMore #TravelAddict

I’ll get to location later in this post, but adding location after  #Travel or #Explore  also make for good hashtags

  • #TravelUSA #TravelEurope #TravelPH #ExploreCanada #ExploreAustralia

Adding “insta” or “gram” as a prefix and suffix, respectively, are also popular hashtags.

  • #Travelgram #Travelingram #InstaTravel #InstaTraveler #InstaExplore #InstaPassport

Taking advantage of daily hashtags is also a good idea. Most days have their own theme, but for travelers, the best ones would probably be:

  • #TravelTuesday #WanderlustWednesday #ThrowbackThursday #FlashbackFriday #SelfieSaturday #SelfieSunday .

Some don’t really fall into clean categories but some good miscellaneous hashtags include:

  • General terms related to travel like #Passport #Vacation #Paradise #Trips #Tripstagram #RoundTheWorld
  • Random hashtags that gained popularity a while ago and remain popular like  #DoYouTravel #TravelWithMe #TravelDeeper
  • #PicOfTheDay #PhotoOfTheDay  are extremely general but extremely popular hashtags.

Using Location Hashtags To Your Advantage

When you’re traveling, you’ll be all over the world. People are always looking through hashtags to see what might be going on in a certain part of the world or to fuel their wanderlust. Always dedicate a few hashtags to where you currently are.

  • #Europe #Eurotrip #France #Paris #EiffelTower #TourEiffel

Adding “insta” or “gram” work well here also, as well as “igers” to signify that you are an Instagrammer in that area. As always, you can’t go wrong with using #Travel either.

  • #InstaParis #IGersParis #Parisgram #IGersFrance #InstaFrance #Francestagram #Europegram #IGersEurope #InstaEurope
  • #TravelParis #TravelFrance #TravelEurope

Getting Featured By Larger Accounts

There are tons of large travel accounts on Instagram. Some are large travel companies and brands, others are accounts that just became big as an aggregator of other people’s submitted pictures. While it kind of sucks to let larger accounts use your photography (and get way more likes than you), it can be a good way to get followers. I’ve had photography featured by GoPro, BBC, and The Guardian, as well as dozens of city-specific or country-specific accounts.

Some popular hashtags to try and get featured by larger accounts (or just get more exposure in general) can be:

  • #NatGeoTravel #NatGeoYourShot #ForbesTravelGuide #BBCTravel #GuardianTravelSnaps #PassionPassport #TravelStoke #BeautifulDestinations #BestInTravel #JetJournal #GirlsWhoExplore #AwesomeEarth #AweSupply #TheGlobeWanderer #LonelyPlanet #TravelDeeper #TravelStoke #ABMTravelBug #Worlderlust #TravelAwesome #ExploringTheGlobe #CNTraveler #TravelDames

Also try to find country or city-specific accounts that are known for featuring other people’s photography in that area. For example, while I was in Peru, I was featured a number of times by @IgersCusco. I’ll use Peru as an example, but you’ll have to find different ones for every country.

  • #IgersCusco #IgersPeru #DiscoverSouthAmerica #ExperiencePeru #UnlimitedSouthAmerica

Hashtags Specific To The Picture

Hashtags can also be useful in describing the picture. Using hashtags is kind of similar to how taking advantage of the alt_text function helps SEO. Basically, by using text to describe your picture, you’re making it more likely to be found. For example, if people are looking for a picture of mountains for whatever reason,  #mountains makes it possible to narrow their search.

You can start with hashtags related directly to the scenery of the picture.

  • #Mountains #Sky #Snow #Blue #Nature #Alps #SnowCapped #Winter #Cold

Or hashtags related to the type of photography:

  • #GoPro #GoProHero #Fisheye #WideAngle #PerspectiveShot #GoProPhoto #GoProOfTheDay

I have yet to buy a real DSLR, but there are popular hashtags for popular cameras as well:

  • #Canon #Canon6D #CanonEos #CanonPhoto #CanonPhotography #CanonUSA

The hardest part of hashtags is picking just 30. You don’t want to be too general otherwise your pictures will quickly get buried by other pictures. With hundreds of millions of people using Instagram per day, you want to make sure yours stand out, so along with general hashtags, throw in some more specific, less popular ones. They’ll require more specific searches, but will be less likely to be buried as quickly.

Think of it like a Google search. If you write a blog called “Travel Tips”, people will be searching for “Travel Tips” all the time, but you’ll be competing with thousands of other (and probably more popular) websites offering travel tips. However, something titled “Ten Tips For Solo Travelers Going Backpacking For The First Time” will require a more specific search, but will have less competition. Hashtags are like titles and keywords for your photo. The better the mix, the more effective your hashtags will be.

Playing around and experimenting with hashtags is something that you’ll need to do on your own if you want to find your perfect mix. I change mine for every picture I post and it is definitely good to be flexible if you want yours to be as effective as possible. I have my hashtags pre-written on the Notes app on my iPhone, and just change a few up before I copy and paste them into a comment immediately after I post the picture. Posting your hashtags as soon as you post the picture guarantees that your picture will show up on the hashtag’s feed. If you wait too long to post it, it might already be buried by newer posts before it even gets seen.

If you up your hashtag game, you up your Instagram game. Hopefully, this guide to hashtags helps you out and helps you achieve whatever goals you might have for Instagram. Like I mentioned in my blog post on gaining Instagram followers , there is a lot of potential to make a lot of money from a large Instagram following, and hashtags will be crucial to this growth.

Great guide here but I get fed up with Instagram changing the ways it deals with the users like limiting hashtags etc. Really does get to me.

150+ Very Best Travel Hashtags for Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest

We may have been compensated through an experience or products from the links and companies mentioned in this post. Thank you for supporting my small business. Please see my disclaimer for more info.

I love sharing my travel photos. Unfortunately, I feel like if I am sharing them without a proper hashtag, they aren’t quite as “cool” or “seen” as the photos other travel bloggers and photographers are posting with a hashtag. Hashtags have become very popular, and gone are the days when we knew that cute little symbol as a “pound sign” on the calculator. In this post, we’ll talk about what a hashtag is, why you want to use one, and then I’ll give you a whole list of travel hashtags. You’ve come to the right place for Facebook and Instagram Travel Hashtags!

Unraveling the mystery of the hashtag has been fun for this old grandma. I may be hip, but I’m still learning! Isn’t that part of the fun in this life? Learning new things and sharing them with others? Good news! I did the work of learning so I can share the info with you. You get to read up on the research I did for you! Let’s get into it!

What is a Hashtag Anyway?

A hashtag is that fun little crosshatch symbol that you see all over social media channels these days. Back in my day (I love saying that), a hashtag was known as a pound sign and we used it primarily to indicate weights in measurements when typing. Now, thanks to modern-day social media, including Instagram and Facebook, we call this little symbol a hashtag and it has a whole new use.

Instagram is the most popular place to use a hashtag. A post shared with a hashtag will look like this: #hashtagpost. The symbol # is followed by the words that relate to whatever it is you’re posting. If you’re posting images of travel photography, you should use hashtags with words connected to your travels and what you’re showing in your photo.

Tips for Why You Want to Use a Hashtag?

Personal use.

There are two simple answers to this. First, you can use hashtags to organize your posts and travel photos for organizational purposes. Hashtags are easily searchable on social media, especially on your Instagram account, so it’s easy to find your images back after posting them if you’ve hashtagged them. For example, if you put a common hashtag on all of your photos of your trip to Chicago with the girls, then, later on, you will easily be able to go back and search for those photos with that hashtag. If your friends all use the same hashtag, you will easily be able to find what they’ve posted as well. Choose a unique and specific hashtag, such as #smithgirlsdoChicago2022, so your images will all match in a unique and fun way.

Professional Use?

The other reason you may want to use a hashtag is to showcase what you’re posting outside of your group of friends and family. If you are considering moving into the realm of social media influencer or blogger, then your goal on social media is likely to gain followers. Hashtags are perfect for this. Why? Because people can search and follow common hashtags. Even if you aren’t looking to make money out of your posts, it can be a whole lot of fun to see one of your posts gain likes and follows. A popular hashtag, like #puremichigan, will have many followers and would be perfect to use while showcasing photos of the beauty you see when traveling through Michigan. Others who have traveled through Michigan have used this same hashtag.

What Hashtags Should I Use?

Now that we have a basic understanding of what a hashtag is and why we want to use them, let’s talk specifically about travel hashtags and get on to the list of hashtags for you to use!

How Many Hashtags Should I Use?

It is entirely up to you how many hashtags you choose to use. Generally speaking, most social media channels allow a max of thirty hashtags per post. Somewhere between nine and eleven seems to be the magic number to gain the most followers if that is your goal. Each person chooses to use their hashtags for different reasons.

Here are our tips for optimizing your travel photography hashtags strategy. That way, you too can get the most exposure for your travel Instagram posts, and grow your Instagram following.

Post When Your Users Are Most Active

If a tree falls in the forest, and no one’s online to see your Instagram post of it, did it even happen?

Giggles aside, you get the point.

It doesn’t matter if you have the most slammin’ travel shot there ever was and used the top hashtags for travel photography known to humankind, if you’re not also making sure your people are online to see it.

Your goal is to post your content, with your best travel photography hashtags, at the times when users are most active. This is when users are most likely to engage with your posts.

The more users that engage with your post early on, the more people the Instagram algorithm will show your post to.

How do you know when to post?

If you have a creator or business account (and if you plan on being serious about your Instagram travel photography, you should) your Instagram account analytics will help you out. Learn how to set up a creator or business account.

How to view Instagram insights to optimize your travel photography Instagram posts

  • Head to your profile on the mobile app
  • Tap the Insights button
  • Tap “Total Followers”
  • Scroll to the bottom of the page and find “Most Active Times”

If you converted your profile to a creator or business account recently, these analytics will only show insights for content posted after you converted.

Most active times for posting your travel photography to Instagram

In case you’re not able to access your Instagram analytics, a general rule  is that users are most active on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, from the hours of 10 am to 2 pm.

You can use up to 30 hashtags on each post.

We use all 30 travel photography hashtags on every post, except Reels posts.

For Reels, we recommend 15 or less hashtags to better directly target your traffic. However, you may use up to 30 hashtags on Reels as well.

We will group our travel photography hashtags below to make it easier for you to select the number of hashtags you want.

Instagram doesn’t like seeing repetitive behavior. When it sees too much repetitive behavior, the Instagram algorithm might construe you for a bot. Therefore too much use of the same, identical hashtags on every, single post for a prolonged period of time may lead to a shadowban. You do  not want that.

To avoid this, be sure to vary your traveling photography hashtags on each post.

A good general practice is to select 15 or so of the best hashtags for travel photography on a post. Then add your own additional hashtags specific to the post.

We’ve divided our travel photography hashtags below into groups of 15, allowing you to easily mix and match, and add your own hashtags as you need.

Additional travel photography hashtags you could use are:

place-specific hashtags

  • referring to the city, state, or country
  • e.g. #californiadreaming

content-specific hashtags

  • referring to the actions, place or subjects
  • e.g. #hikingaddict , # beachvibes , # beardedhiker

When used properly, Instagram can function as a market research travel photography app to show you what works, and what doesn’t.

A periodic auditing of your posts can give you tons of information to help you grow your Instagram account. You can perform an audit by using the Instagram Insights feature we discussed earlier.

Every once in a while (we do it once a month), go through your posts and make note of:

  • the engagement ( number of comments and likes )
  • and reach ( how many users saw the post )

View insights for Instagram post to optimize your travel Instagram

To see these analytics, simply go to the post you want to study, and tap “View insights” on the bottom left corner of the post.

If you notice some posts have a greater reach than others, make note of the travel photography hashtags you used.

If you continue to see the same hashtags correlating with your posts with the highest reach, those are the best travel photography hashtags that work for you to grow your Instagram following.

Starting a travel blog?| Learn how to drive traffic to your travel blog .

For Instagram optimization, it doesn’t really matter where the hashtags go.

However, we do recommend placing your travel photography hashtags in the comments for regular photo & video posts, as it keeps them neater.

Maximize Conversions: First Impressions Matter

Last but not least, to truly optimize your travelling photography hashtags game, you should be mindful of your Instagram profile and feed.

The whole reason to optimize your posts and find the top hashtags for travel photography is to lead people to your posts to like and comment, and hopefully to your profile to follow you.

In order to maximize these conversions and gain more followers, you shouldn’t neglect your:

  • Instagram profile bio

These are the most important factors for making a first impression on potential followers.

Your Top 9 is your collection of 9 most recent posts, and one of the first things potential followers see. It is often the deciding factor on whether or not someone chooses to follow you.

Be mindful to always have your Top 9 be as enticing as can be, and representative of the kind of travel photography users can expect from you.

Here is our current Top 9, as an example.

Optimize your top 9 along with your strategy for the best travel photography hashtags

Users care about one of two things (sometimes both): story and style.

Aim to fulfill at least one of these.

Focusing on style means focusing on image quality. If you focus on style, choose your best images, use a decent camera, or even a drone. Refer to our guides for the best budget travel cameras and how to travel with a drone .

Make sure your feed is cohesive and beautiful.

Otherwise, you might choose to focus on story.

Use your image and caption to tell a compelling thought, share a memory, convey your personality in a way that makes people want to be friends with you. Be relatable and authentic. Just be yo damn self, ok?

The best posts will be mindful of both story and style.

Your Instagram profile bio is also important for converting potential followers into followers.

Make your bio descriptive and informative. A potential follower should be able to get a clear sense of who you are and what they can expect from you just by looking at your bio.

Here’s our current bio, as an example.

Don't forget to optimize your Instagram profile bio when selecting the best Instagram hashtags for travel photography

Our slogan, “Your life, Your terms,” is first, as almost all of our content is about living life in a way that serves you and your needs.

Next is a little tagline about ourselves: “Living a whimsical life ’round the globe.” This conveys that our content is about both travel and  lifestyle .

We have our location, as a lot of our recent content will be coming out of LA and Joshua Tree.

We have our contact info, and finally, a link to our travel blog with a recent post of ours.

A potential follower can get a clear sense of our vibe and our content, and make their decision whether or not to follow us based on that impression.

The Best Travel Hashtags for Instagram, Facebook and Twitter that should actually be used on social media!

Anthony Bianco - The Travel Tart

Anyone who’s on social media knows that #travel is just one of the frequently used Travel Hashtags .

There are hundreds of variants that people use which flood the internet, and they usually include a tonne of selfies  taken when travelling.

It’s amazing that they’ve only been around for around a decade!

I use them now and then when I’m posting some funny travel related photo to Twitter and Instagram.

If you’ve been stuck in analogue times , hashtags are a way for people with similar interests to your self to monitor what is being said about them. For example, the #travel and #travelphotography hashtags relate to content posted about those subjects.

The funniest quote I’ve heard about #hashtags is one cracked by a comedian at a stand up comedy night I went to – ‘one night, I was just so desperate for drugs that I smoked the hashtag off my Tweet’… 🙂 Boom Boom!

So today, I’ve come up with my own list of silly travel hashtags that reflect the reality of travel today, and you just never know, one of these might actually become a trending topic one day!

If so, just tweet me! 😉

If you’re going to send out travel related crap out into internet land, you may as well be honest about it – you just want people to click on your catchy headline, or otherwise known as travel clickbait !

#TravelDemotivator

There are all sorts of travel related content out there, such as travel quotes ,  travel tips , and travel photos that inspire people to pack their backpacks and go travelling the world.

But why not show the not so glamourous side of travel with a Travel Demotivator ?

#NotSoSustainableTourism

Going to a tourist trap that’s overcrowded with tourists ? Well, upload your photos of the impact they’re having on the local environment . Go the pollution pic!

#WhatIsInMyBag

Great to use when you’re busted by customs for trying to smuggle in some drugs into the country. You’ll only use this one once as you’ll be spending the rest of your life in a prison!

#AirportWeirdos

There are weird people all around the world, but there’s nothing like spotting them in an airport terminal – or worse, they’re assigned to the seat next to you!

People At Airports

#AirportCarpet

What the airport weirdos stand on. Usually comparable to the hallucinating inducing carpet that you might find in the casino .

#WhatIBroughtUpInTheToilet

This website is full of silly toilet humour . This one could be used on a number of occasions, including a big night out, after eating that dodgy bit of street food, or any exotic bush toilet location . Or maybe a funny toilet sign like below!

#WhatIBroughtBackFromOverseas

That pic of the nasty genital rash that you’ve taken at your local doctor back home. Don’t use this one on your online dating profile.

#TravelMedsIUse

#BikiniShot

Try and outdo your favourite Kardashian and score as many likes and comments as them!

#DogsBreakfast

What your backpack looks like. After you’ve packed it. If you’re not sure what I mean, a dog’s breakfast is Australian Slang for what the dog’s bowl looks like first thing in the morning when he looks at it.

#SnakesOnAPlane

This Z grade special bit of celluloid made my list of funny travel movies . I was thinking along the lines of taking a pic of those lolly snakes and posting it. Make sure you tag the airline your flying on to see if they freak out!

#BrochureVsReality

This where you put up a picture of the travel brochure of the destination you’re at, compared with a photo of what it actually looks like. Bonus points if they look the same!

Omg this had me laughing out loud! The #brochurevsreality one could actually take off! There’s so much doctored travel pics out there these days that the very idea of travel has now become this crazy perfect version of what reality is like!

Yes, way too true!

70 Best Travel Hashtags For Instagram

Picking the best travel hashtags is a sure way to beat Instagram’s algorithm change.

As many of you know, Instagram’s algorithm changes affect our videos and images’ organic reach. When Instagram ditched the  chronological feed , it is no longer sure that our followers will see our content as they scroll their feed. Instead, Instagram decides which content is more relevant to you based on its algorithm.

The algorithm changes affect everybody’s engagement using the platform, most especially travel influencers who rely on paid Instagram sponsorships, or digital nomads who use the platform for their work from home online jobs .

However, a strategy that seems everyone tends to forget on how to beat the algorithm is the power to use hashtags.

Using the best Instagram travel hashtags, most notably for travel influencers, assures that their content will have an organic reach beyond their followers.

Considering the number of travel hashtags available out there, it is hard to pick which one to use.

This post will cover the different types of hashtags to use depending on your travel niche to help you get the best engagement for your travel content!

How Popular Travel Hashtags Work on Instagram

Instagram popular travel hashtags

There are three ways to reach a brand new audience using the right Instagram hashtags, in stories, feed post, and getting discovered on the Search page. Let’s take a look below on how it works for each:

1. Travel Hashtags on Instagram Stories

Instagram stories travel hashtag

Instagram rolled out a feature where users can  follow a hashtag  on stories a couple of years ago. The new feature meant that you could get more views on your stories from people following the hashtag.

2. Travel Hashtags on Instagram Feed Post

The feed post is where we generally put our favorite Instagram travel hashtags. It allows our content to appear on people’s main feed even if they do not follow our travel Instagram page.

3. Travel Hashtags on Search Page

When we search for a specific hashtag, the search page divides the results into two categories: ‘Popular and ‘Most Recent.’

The popular section shows content with your select travel hashtag with the most engagement, while the ‘most recent’ shows recently posted content.

Best Instagram Travel Hashtags Per Niche

Choosing the right hashtags for your travel content largely depends on the travel niche you are in.

As you know, the travel niche is quite broad and has many different facets and sub-niches that can range from luxury travel to adventure.

To get you up to speed, I broke down a few travel niches with the best Instagram hashtags.

Instagram Travel Hashtags for Luxury Travel

Instagram luxury travel hashtags

If you have pictures and videos of staying in luxury villas in the Maldives, or traveling in-style like flying in first class, then the following luxury travel hashtags below will come in handy. Let’s take a few of them below:

1. #luxurytravel – 6.3 million posts

The standard luxury travel hashtag for your content. Considering this hashtag has over 6.3 million posts, much of the content that is prioritized on the search page has followers that are over 50K.

2. #luxurytravelandhotels – More than 1000 posts

If you have content that features super expensive and luxury hotels in Bali or the Maldives, then the #luxurytravelandhotels hashtag is the perfect hashtag for your content.

3. #luxurytraveldaily – 76.6K posts

The #luxurytraveldaily is an excellent hashtag if you have extra content lying around that you want to post to inspire your followers.

4. #luxurytravelblogger – 48.6K posts

The hashtag #luxurytravelblogger focuses more on the individual (blogger or influencer) than the actual luxury travel itself. This is a great hashtag to use because it is not as competitive with only 48 thousand posts. Much of the Instagram profiles that are included in the popular search have under 10 thousand followers.

5. #luxurytravelagent – 31K posts

#Luxurytravelagent is a useful hashtag if you have a travel online business! The popular page’s content is a mix of people (the travel agents) and the destination they are offering.

6. #luxurytravels – 135K posts

Not to be confused with the first hashtag! The #luxurytravels hashtag has one more letter at the end, but with fewer posts to compete with. Many of the Instagram accounts on the popular search page features accounts with less than 25 thousand followers.

7. #luxurytravelguide – More than 5000 posts

The #luxurytravelguide hashtag has only 5000 posts on the search page, but much of the content is getting high engagements with likes averaging 300 and above.

8. #luxuryhotel – 2.6 million posts

The #luxuryhotel hashtag is a little bit more competitive than #luxurytravelandhotels hashtag, which might be a little bit of a disadvantage for Instagram accounts with fewer followers.

9. #firstclass – 1.3 million posts

Mixing it up a bit and taking the word luxury out of the hashtag! If you are traveling in luxury, chances are you are going to be flying in first class. Don’t miss this popular hashtag when you take a picture of your seat in first class.

10. #firstclasslounge – 19.7k posts

If you fly in first class, there’s no doubt you will be spending some time in fancy first-class lounges. There are plenty of Instagrammable first-class lounges in the world, so make sure to take plenty of pictures and videos!

Instagram Travel Hashtags for Digital Nomads

The Top 15 Instagram Hashtags for Female Travelers (+ the Accounts that Will Regram YOU!)

By Helene Sula

One of the best ways, hands down, to grow your account is by getting featured on another account. Think about it, you are being featured by an account (maybe an Instagram account even bigger than yours) and they are featuring you to all their followers, which means you get more exposure, more interaction, and more followers. It's a win-win! So I put together a list of the top 15 Instagram hashtags for female travel bloggers, plus the accounts that will regram your image when you use their hashtag.

I LOVE using Instagram as inspiration for my travels and where to go next (you can find me @ heleneinbetween ). Especially since moving to Germany, I am always on the hunt for cool trips to take around Europe. One of my best spots for inspiration is perusing travel accounts and hashtags as well as finding new accounts to follow.

How has travelling shaped you as a person? Your travel experiences can be powerful and transformative, if you let them. They can change how you see the world and they can change how you see yourself WITHIN the world. It's so very easy to get caught up in our own lives. Travel helps you to recognise what a tiny place you occupy in the grand scheme of things. I think with all this horrible news and politics we are being exposed to recently that it's important to focus on the good. For some people injustice motivates. For others, it's the hope that things can get better. Help spread hope by sharing your positive stories. Every person you see has their own unique life experiences, thoughts and struggles. That knowledge coupled with the knowledge that there are so, so many people out there can be overwhelming. Sometimes you feel like you only hear about suffering and pain of other humans. For me, this knowledge and exposure has really brought home the fact that I am so very lucky to have the life I have. Travelling cemented my desire to chase an idealistic world. I know that in my lifetime the world will not reach the ideals that I think should exist, but since I have the opportunity to contribute to making it a slightly better place, then I will do what I can. I'll probably be called idealistic (aka unrealistic) until the end of time but that's a-okay with me…because it means I still have hope that things can improve. Over to you – do you feel travel has changed you? What have you experienced that had a profound impact on you? Share your stories ? Thanks to my absolute fave @polkadotpassport for tagging #ladiesgoneglobal ? Your photography blows me away as usual! ? A photo posted by ✈join +80k female travellers ? Awesome Travel Hashtags to Follow

We’re just going to say it--Black folks have been killing the travel game lately. From Cape Town to Cairo, Bali to Budapest, we’ve been there done that and taken the photos to prove it. And any avid traveler knows that the best time to plan a trip is right after you’ve gotten off the plane from another one. But there is another reason to scroll through the travel hashtags on Instagram—when you are feeling a bit blue. Or even a bit too Black.

Beyoncé approved Youtuber turned PBS host Evelyn Ngugi aka Evelyn From the Internets, once made a video parody about the desire to “call in Black” from work when whatever racial traumas of the day were just too much to deal with. And this was while President Obama was in office. (Now, chile…)

Unfortunately, this isn’t necessarily realistic for most people. But instead of staying down, we can opt for the next best thing—to scroll through photo after photo of smiling black faces sipping mai tais or climbing the Great Wall of China may be just the thing to bring you out of your funk.

So, here is a list of 10 hashtags that will instantly put you in a good mood.

#wegotooworld

#wegotoworld

Created sometime around 2015, this hashtag turned travel company is used by those who are serious about travel. These hashtaggers have moved far beyond the camera phone. Instead, the photos here are glossy and sophisticated—kind of like a melaninated National Geographic. It is the perfect page to browse if you are looking for an alternative to any negative images that traditional media often shows of us.

#blackwomentravel

#blackwomentravel

Sistas are doing it for themselves in nearly all aspects of their lives, including travel. Whether it is a girl’s trip or a solo jaunt to Lisbon, seeing girls like you or the women you love travel the world is enough to rip anyone out of a funk.

#forafricans

#forafricans

Taken from the account of the same name, this community is a view of African life by the people who know and love them the most—other Africans. The result is a series of gorgeous shots of deeply melaninated people and the earth that surrounds and supports them.

#blackvoyageurs

#blackvoyageurs

You know things are getting’ fancy when the British spelling comes out. As a result, of all the hashtags, this one is one of the most inclusive. Combining Black folks from all the former British colonies and some French ones too. It truly is a one stop shop for the totality of the African Diaspora.

#travelnoirekids

#travelnoirekids

There is truly no cuter hashtag nor a greater inspiration for how to raise your kids than this. No matter what you are going through, this hashtag will give you a mental boost.

#mybeautifulafrica

#mybeautifulafrica

Dedicated to a land and her people, this hashtag includes everything from historical images, to beauty shots to images of travelers. This is the hashtag to search if you just want a refill on Black beauty and the land in which it originated.

#afrodyssee

#afrodyssee

Like many companies, this Swiss-based African marketplace turned their brand into a hashtag for promotional reasons. The result, whether intended or not, is a sophisticate’s dream of Black beauty and journeys all over the world.

#blacktravelerstakebrazil

#blacktravelerstakebrazil

The name pretty much says it!  And as the originator of Samba, Candomblé, Capoeira, and the largest Black population in the Americas, it should be no surprise that other kinfolk would love to journey there to explore its culture and beauty. Shaken by Grisly Killings of Women, Activists in Africa Demand Change

The continent has the highest rate of gender-related killings of women in the world, according to the United Nations. Activists accuse officials of ignoring the issue and blaming the victims.

By Abdi Latif Dahir

Reporting from Murang’a and Nairobi, Kenya

A wave of gruesome killings of women across several African countries in recent weeks has prompted outrage and indignation, triggered a wave of protests and precipitated calls for governments to take decisive action against gender-based violence.

Kenyans were shocked when 31 women were killed in January after they were beaten, strangled or beheaded, activists and police said. In Somalia, a pregnant woman died this month after her husband allegedly set her on fire . In the West African nation of Cameroon, a powerful businessman was arrested in January on accusations, which he has denied, of brutalizing dozens of women .

The upsurge in killings is part of a broader pattern that got worse during economic hard times and pandemic lockdowns, human rights activists say. An estimated 20,000 gender-related killings of women were recorded in Africa in 2022, the highest rate in the world , according to the U.N. Experts believe the true figures are likely higher.

“The problem is the normalization of gender-based violence and the rhetoric that, yes, women are disposable,” said Njeri wa Migwi, the co-founder of Usikimye — Swahili for “Don’t be silent” — a Kenyan nonprofit working with victims of gender-based violence.

The feminist scholar Diana Russell popularized the term femicide — the killing of women or girls because of their gender — to create a category that distinguishes it from other homicides. According to a report by the United Nations , the killings are often carried out by male partners or close family members and are preceded by physical, emotional and sexual abuse.

Critics say that many African leaders, as well as police, ignore or downplay the problem, or even blame victims .

On a recent afternoon, Ms. Migwi, the nonprofit co-founder, was leading a training session for girls and women when she was suddenly called to a nearby home in Kayole, a low-income, high-crime neighborhood east of Nairobi.

Inside the dimly lit house, Jacinta Ayuma, a day laborer and mother of two, lay lifeless, bloody bruises visible on her face, neck and left arm. The police said she was killed by her partner. He fled, and they have yet to arrest him. An autopsy showed she died from blunt force trauma that resulted in multiple organ injuries.

Wails of anguish rang in the air as several officers carried the body into a police van using a thin duvet. Three neighbors said they had heard someone screaming for help throughout the night, until about 6 a.m. But they said they did not intervene or call the police because the sounds of beatings and distress were commonplace, and they considered it a private matter.

Ms. Migwi, back in her office nearby, said she had seen too many similar cases. “I am mourning,” she said, her head in her hands. “There’s a helplessness that comes with all of this.”

To coincide with Valentine’s Day, women’s rights campaigners in Kenya organized a vigil they called “Dark Valentine” in the capital to commemorate the women who have been killed. At least 500 women have been victims of femicide in Kenya between 2016 and 2023, according to a recent report by the Africa Data Hub , a group of data organizations working with journalists in several African countries that analyzed cases reported in Kenyan news media.

About 300 people donning black T-shirts waved red roses, lit red candles and observed a minute of silence.

“Why should we have to keep reminding people that women need to be alive,” said Zaha Indimuli, a co-organizer of the event.

Among the women whose name was read at the vigil was Grace Wangari Thuiya, a 24-year-old beautician who was killed in Nairobi in January.

Two days before her death, Ms. Thuiya visited her mother in Murang’a County, about 35 miles northeast of Nairobi. During the visit, her mother, Susan Wairimu Thuiya, said they had spoken about a 20-year-old college student who was dismembered just days before and what seemed like an epidemic of violence against women.

Ms. Thuiya cautioned her daughter, whom she described as ambitious and jovial, to be careful in her dating choices.

“Fear was gripping my heart that day,” Ms. Thuiya said of their last encounter.

Two days later, the police called Ms. Thuiya to inform her that her daughter had died after her boyfriend assaulted and repeatedly stabbed her. Ms. Thuiya said her daughter had never revealed that she was seeing someone. The police said they arrested a man in the apartment where Grace Thuiya was killed.

“This is all a bad dream that I want to wake up from,” Ms. Thuiya said.

Ms. Thuiya’s killing, among others , sparked large-scale protests across Kenya in late January. In recent years, anti-femicide protests had broken out in Kenya over the killing of female Olympic athletes , and also in other African nations, including South Africa , Nigeria and Uganda.

Activists say the demonstrations were among the largest nonpolitical protests in Kenya’s history: At least 10,000 women and men crowded the streets of Nairobi alone, with thousands more joining in other cities.

At a time of rising anti-gay sentiments, the protests were also intended to highlight the violence facing nonbinary , queer and transgender women, said Marylize Biubwa, a Kenyan queer activist.

The movement has generated a backlash, especially online, from men who argue that a woman’s clothing or choices justified abuse. Such comments are disseminated with hashtags like #StopKillingMen and by social media influencers like Andrew Kibe, a men’s rights champion and former radio presenter whose YouTube account was shut down last year for violating the company’s terms of service.

“Shut up,” he said in a recent video, referring to those outraged over the killings of women. “You have no right to have an opinion.”

Activists say they don’t see enough outrage from political, ethnic or religious leaders.

In Kenya, President William Ruto has come under criticism for not personally addressing femicide. A spokesman with his office did not respond to requests for comment. But following the protests, his government vowed to expedite investigations and introduced a toll-free number for the public to report perpetrators.

Still, in Kenya and across Africa, campaigners say more investigators need to be hired, judges need to decide cases more quickly and legislatures should pass laws to punish perpetrators more severely.

Data collection and research on femicide needs to be funded, said Patricia Andago, a researcher at the data firm Odipo Dev.

For now, the killings continue to leave a trail of devastation.

On a recent afternoon, Ms. Thuiya, whose 24-year-old daughter was killed in January, sat cuddling her two granddaughters, 5-year-old Keisha and 22-month-old Milan. She said that Keisha believed her mother ascended “to the sky” and asked if she could get a ladder to follow her.

“It was very painful,” Ms. Thuiya said about hearing her granddaughter’s questions. “I just want justice for my daughter. And I want that justice now.”
