Prestigious event from Feb 29 to March 2

Tribune News Network

The 2024 Longines Global Champions Tour and the Global Champions Tour season was launched at Al Shaqab on Tuesday.

Hosted at the esteemed glorious Longines Arena of Al Shaqab, the prestigious opening event promises unparalleled equestrian excellence and thrills from February 29 to March 2, 2024.

At the launch press conference, Protocol & Public Relations Manager Dr. Fahad Al Hajri welcomed the officials and guests.

Mohammed Jaber Al Khayarin, Event Director, expressed his enthusiasm, stating: “We are proud to host the best horses, riders and equestrian enthusiasts from all over the world to participate in this global competition, which also complies with the Qatar National Vision 2030 to modernize whilst preserving heritage, traditions and values, and urging our society to engage in equestrian sports.”

Longines Global Champions Tour, Jan Tops, Founder and President, emphasised the significance of the occasion, saying, “As we embark on another season of elite show jumping, every year the Longines Global Champions Tour and GCL grow. I am very proud of the immense growth over the last 16 years of the sport in Qatar.

“Last year we saw the Championships being decided by the very last fence so it shows how strong the competition is with so many top riders here like World number one Henrik von Eckermann, the legends in our sport John Whitaker and Marcus Ehning and all the top French and Belgium riders here for the overall season title. To win this global circuit it makes you the world champion in our sport. We are grateful for the unwavering support of our sponsors, particularly Longines, whose commitment enables us to elevate the sport to new heights”

Marco Danese, Sports Director of the Longines Global Champions Tour and GCL, highlighted the continued innovation within the sport, stating, “Every year the venue here in Doha gets better and better. The facilities here in Al Shaqab are considered one of the best in the world not only for the horses, owners, and grooms but spectators and stakeholders as well. Now it is a tradition to start here in Doha and we have huge quality of riders and horses so we start the season with high expectations. The riders and teams know they need points from the first leg of the season so they are coming here to win!”

Reflecting on her past successes and anticipation for the upcoming event, Edwina Tops-Alexander, two-time Longines Global Champions Tour Champion and previous LGCT Grand Prix of Doha winner, remarked, “Competing in Doha is always a highlight of the season. The level of competition and the electrifying atmosphere make it a truly unforgettable experience. The competition on the tour is getting stronger and stronger, the riders are really fighting to be strong from the first show and put pressure on the rest of the riders and teams.

“Winning the tour is like the world championships of our sport and what is so special about it is how each venue is unique, different circumstances - the small arenas, big arenas, grass or sand and that is what makes the rider a champion. To be consistent throughout the year competing against the best riders is what makes it very exciting and challenging.”

The esteemed Longines Global Champions Tour (LGCT) comes right after the highly successful end of the 11th Edition of the CHI AL SHAQAB Presented by Longines; a momentous stride in Qatar’s commitment to fostering a culture of excellence in sports and entertainment, aligning seamlessly with its rich heritage of horsemanship.

The event promises a convergence of elite riders, majestic horses, and entertained spectators from across the globe who are set to enthrall visitors with the best of showjumping feats and displays.

This year’s competition is supported by the Presenting Partner, Longines, and Main Sponsor, ExxonMobil Qatar. The event’s additional supporters are Rixos Gulf Hotel Doha (Hospitality Partner) SOCAST (Exclusive Social Media Partner), Saleh Al Hamad Al Mana.Co (Transportation Partners), Equine Veterinary Medical Center (Official Veterinary Partner), and Aspetar (Official Medical Partner).

Showjumping is here, longines global champions tour of mexico begins.

gnp longines global champions tour

Mexico City, Mexico – April 20, 2023 – From April 20 to 23 the best equestrian circuit in the world returns to Mexico, the Longines Global Champions Tour of Mexico presented by GNP Mexico Jumping, which this season will visit 16 exclusive cities around the world.

Mexico will have the privilege of being the third venue of the 2023 circuit and the only stage in Latin America and Campo Militar Marte will once again be the center of attention of the world equestrian scene. Showjumping’s heavyweights have arrived in Mexico City, where they will compete 2,250 metres above sea level as part of the diverse and far-reaching global Championship. With the top international horses in the world already arriving in Mexico’s capital city straight from Miami Beach, anticipation is building for a thrilling showcase of top sport and entertainment in front of electric crowds.

Longines Global Champions Tour Mexico presented by GNP Mexico Jumping will host 150 international riders from 24 different countries, among them current world number one, Henrik von Eckermann from Sweden. Other famous riders who will compete at Campo Marte this weekend are the likes of Marlon Modolo, Maikel Van der Vleuten and Daniel Deusser.

Mexico will be represented in the CSI5* by Nicolas Pizarro , Fernando Martinez Sommer , Antonio Chedraui , Eugenio Garza , Federico Fernandez , Arturo Parada , Andres Azcarraga .

In a pre-event press conference Francisco Pasquel , director of the event said,  “I am very happy to bring the most important circuit in the world to Mexico and that each time it brings more strength and prestige. I am delighted that the event is being recognized worldwide”.

With the Campo Marte situated in the heart of Mexico City, the event welcomes passionate spectators and many new fans, witnessing show jumping at the highest level for the first time. Jan Tops said;  “It is fantastic to be here again in this wonderful place. We are very proud to be here and thank you to Francisco and his team and the support we get from the national federation and the great partners we have here, obviously oxer sport and Longines who has been supporting us for many many years, and many years to come. Also to GNP thank you for your really great support because without them we could not be right where we are at this moment.

“This year we have a lot of people because the word has spread around that this place is not only a beautiful grass ring, but the next thing that is so unique is the people. What you will see this week we also have our GCL local team from Mexico Amigos which is good and you all notice you are very good at supporting this team, and we also have on Sunday the Longines Global Champions Tour Grand Prix, which with all the visitors we have, we will have a great weekend like we have in the past.”

Although still early on in the season, the championship battle is in full swing with 8 of the top 10 ranked riders in the current championship standings heading to Mexico City intensifying the season race already. Maikel van der Vleuten (NED) currently on 63 points will be aiming to extend his lead this week but Malin Baryard Johnsson (SWE) will be hot on his heels just one point behind on 62 and known for good form in the expansive grass arena in Mexico City.

With a golden ticket for the Longines Global Champions Tour Super Grand Prix at the GC Prague Playoffs in the forefront of their minds, the stars of show jumping know a strong start at the beginning of the season could pay dividends as the battle unfolds. However, the 16 event season will be a true test for the most rounded and consistent athletes in the sport, challenging the best in unique locations worldwide, from expansive grass arenas such as Mexico City and Madrid’s Club de Campo, to the small yacht-lined stage set in Monaco’s Port Hercule .

With over 20,000 fans in attendance, LGCT Mexico City has become an unmissable event on the show jumping calendar. Fans around the world will be able to watch via GCTV, the live streaming service, which this year features further innovations, expert analysis and the best view of the sporting action from the comfort of a tablet or laptop. As well as increased streaming, fans will be able to keep up to date via the LGCT and GCL official social media platforms, with an inclusive behind the scenes experience and unique perspective of the GC world.

Go beneath the streets on this tour of the spectacular, mind-bending Moscow Metro! Be awed by architecture and spot the Propaganda , then hear soviet stories from a local in the know. Finish it all up above ground, looking up to Stalins skyscrapers, and get the inside scoop on whats gone on behind those walls.

Know More about this tour

We begin our Moscow tour beneath the city, exploring the underground palace of the Moscow Metro. From the Square of Revolution station, famous for its huge statues of soviet people (an armed soldier, a farmer with a rooster, a warrior, and more), we’ll move onto some of the most significant stations, where impressive mosaics, columns, and chandeliers will boggle your eyes! Moreover, these stations reveal a big part of soviet reality — the walls depict plenty of Propaganda , with party leaders looking down from images on the walls. Your local guide will share personal stories of his/her family from USSR times, giving you insight into Russia’s complicated past and present. Then we’re coming back up to street level, where we’ll take a break and refuel with some Russian fast food: traditional pancakes, called bliny. And then, stomachs satiated, we are ready to move forward! We’ll take the eco-friendly electric trolleybus, with a route along the Moscow Garden Ring. Used mainly by Russian babushkas(grannies) during the day, the trolleybus hits peak hours in the mornings and evenings, when many locals use it going to and from their days. Our first stop will be the Aviator’s House, one of Stalin’s Seven Sisters, followed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — and you’ll hear the legends of what has gone on inside the walls. Throughout your Moscow tour, you’ll learn curious facts from soviet history while seeing how Russia exists now, 25 years after the USSR.
