“A SERIOUS HIT! Broadway’s got a bright new star – its name is Anastasia.”

 – NBC-TV

Inspired by the beloved films, ANASTASIA transports us from the twilight of the Russian Empire to the euphoria of Paris in the 1920s, as a brave young woman sets out to discover the mystery of her past. Pursued by a ruthless Soviet officer determined to silence her, Anya enlists the aid of a dashing conman and a lovable ex-aristocrat. Together, they embark on an epic adventure to help her find home, love, and family.

With its opulent settings, dazzling costumes, and a soaring score including the song favorites from the hit animated film, “Journey to the Past” and “Once Upon a December,” ANASTASIA is the spectacular new musical about discovering who you are and defining who you’re meant to be.

News & Features

About the phantom of the opera on broadway, video & photos.

The longest-running show in Broadway history, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera debuted in 1988, winning seven Tony Awards® including Best Musical. Based on Gaston Leroux’s horror novel, it tells the enticing story of the Phantom, who haunts the stage of the Paris Opera and subsequently falls in love with a beautiful young soprano. Audiences are in for a thrilling night of spectacle and romance, accompanied by Broadway’s most unforgettable score.

Know Before You Go

Both romantic and scary, The Phantom of the Opera is a thrilling night of theater with grand emotions. Andrew Lloyd Webber’s score, with its beloved signature song “Music of the Night,” sets the mood, but you may also find yourself humming the gorgeous period costumes and simple yet grand sets (even the famous chandelier, which probably falls slower than you’d expect, is a thrill).

"Phantom rules! It remains as fresh and spectacular as ever. Andrew Lloyd Webber's score has a visceral tug more than almost any score written in the past 20 years. Beautiful and romantic, I have to tip my hat: The Phantom of the Opera has aged divinely." NY1 Roma Torre

broadway us tours 2023

"Phantom still delivers the goods! Judging by sheer invention, emotional punch and onstage talent, the venerable blockbuster still beats out almost all of the shippersnappers currently on Broadway. Maria Bjornson's flamboyant gothic design and Harold Prince's fantastical staging still have the gleam of finely polished professionalism." The New York Times Jason Zinoman
"Phantom is still wonderful and isn't showing its age one bit! The chandelier still falls on cue and the show still rises to the top of all the musicals ever to appear on Broadway. I hope I listen to the music of the night forever!" WOR Radio David Richardson
"It may be possible to have a terrible time at The Phantom of the Opera, but you'll have to work at it. Only a terminal prig would let the avalanche of pre-opening publicity poison his enjoyment of this show, which usually wants nothing more than to shower the audience with fantasy and fun, and which often succeeds, at any price. The physical production, Andrew Bridge's velvety lighting included, is a tour de force throughout–as extravagant of imagination as of budget." The New York Times Frank Rich

Frequently Asked Questions

Grand opera and lush romance might not be their cup of tea. And the Phantom is a frightening guy. There are old-fashioned scare moments throughout—a dead corpse plunging from a noose, shrieking-for-their-lives ballerinas, that disfigured face... Such sights will either send your kid burying their face in your arm or thinking it’s the coolest show in town.

Mother Play

What's Coming to Broadway in 2023

Running at the Hayes Theatre Previews Begin: April 2, 2024 Opening Night: April 25, 2024

From Pulitzer Prize winner Paula Vogel comes MOTHER PLAY, a bitingly funny and unflinchingly honest new play about the hold our family has over us and the surprises we find when we unpack the past. It’s 1962, just outside of D.C., and matriarch Phyllis is supervising her teenage children, Carl and Martha, as they move into a new apartment. Phyllis has strong ideas about what her children need to do and be to succeed, and woe be the child who finds their own path. Bolstered by gin and cigarettes, the family endures — or survives — the changing world around them. Blending flares of imaginative theatricality, surreal farce, and deep tenderness, this beautiful rollercoaster ride reveals timeless truths of love, family, and forgiveness.

Director Lila Neugebauer and playwright Heidi Schreck collaborate on the premiere of this Lincoln Center Theater production of Uncle Vanya, which pairs Chekhov's enduring masterpiece with one of America's most celebrated contemporary playwrights in a strikingly immediate new translation.

What's Coming to Broadway in 2023

Running at the American Airlines Theatre Previews Begin: May 17, 2024 Opening Night: TBA

In the Tony Award-nominated play The New York Times calls “an uplifting folk ballad about the pure in heart,” Cephus Miles has the whole world in his callused hands—until his sweetheart Pattie Mae goes off to college and marries another man. Originally staged by the Negro Ensemble Company in 1979, and featured in the first year of Roundabout’s Refocus Project, Samm-Art Williams’ Home is a muscular and melodic coming-of-age story that gives voice to the unbreakable spirit of all Americans who have been searching for a place to belong. Kenny Leon directs.

What's Coming to Broadway in 2023

Previews Begin: March 29, 2024 Opening Night: April 17, 2024

Based on L. Frank Baum's children's book, "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz", The Wiz takes one of the world's most enduring (and enduringly white) American fantasies, and transforms it into an all-Black musical extravaganza for the ages. Featuring a book by William F. Brown and a Tony Award-winning score by Charlie Smalls (and others), this entirely reimagined revival is directed by Schele Williams, choreographed by Jaquel Knight, additional material by Amber Ruffin, and music supervision, orchestrations, and music arrangements by Joseph Joubert.

What's Coming to Broadway in 2023

Running at the Music Box  Theatre Previews Begin: TBA Opening Night: April 18, 2024

It’s 1913 and the women’s movement is heating up in America, anchored by the suffragists — “Suffs,” as they call themselves — and their relentless pursuit of the right to vote. Reaching across and against generational, racial, and class divides, these brilliant, flawed women entertain and inspire us with the story of their hard-won victory in an ongoing fight. So much has changed since the passing of the Nineteenth Amendment over a century ago, and yet we’re reminded sometimes we need to look back, in order to march fearlessly into the future.

Huge Broadway musical closing early but national tour is planned

I t's usually sad when popular Broadway shows drop the curtain and end the production. But sometimes fans can catch a future performance on a Broadway show tour.

Classic musical "Funny Girl" arrived on Broadway at the August Wilson Theatre for a revival in March 2022 and closed Sept. 3, 2023. The original production opened at the Winter Garden Theatre in New York in March 1964 starring Barbra Streisand as Fanny Brice and closed in July 1967 after 17 previews, 1,348 performances and picking up a Tony Award for Best Musical.

Fans of "Funny Girl" can still catch the musical on tour as it wraps up a stop in Cleveland March 10 and continues on to 16 more cities across the country, including Des Moines, Iowa; Las Vegas; Los Angeles; San Francisco; Costa Mesa, Calif.; Hartford, Conn.; Washington, D.C.; Philadelphia; Atlanta; Dallas; Houston; Seattle; Salt Lake City; Cincinnati; and New Orleans, before finishing April 6, 2025 in Schenectady, N.Y.

Several Broadway shows close early

Another favorite Broadway show, Lerner and Loewe's "Camelot," opened a revival production at the Vivian Beaumont Theater on March 9, 2023, and was reportedly extended to Sept. 3, 2023, but closed early on July 23 after playing 38 previews and 115 regular performances.

At the time of the closure announcement, production representatives said the producers were planning a U.S. national tour and West End shows, but no dates have been revealed.

The original cast production of "Camelot" opened on Broadway in 1960 starring Julie Andrews, Richard Burton and Robert Goulet.

Early show closings might be a little trend lately as "Days of Wine and Roses," which began Jan. 6 at Studio 54 and was expected to play through April 28, 2024, will close early on March 31, 2024.

The Broadway revival of Monty Python's "Spamalot," which opened Oct. 31, 2023, at the St. James Theatre in New York, is also closing down its production earlier than people expected as the producer has set April 7, 2024, for the final performance of the musical after a 24-week run. Several Broadway ticket websites had originally listed July 28, 2024, as the final date for the production.

The musical reportedly failed to attract strong audiences that the original show from 2005 drew. The show in the final week of February and beginning of March grossed just $589,970 and ticket sales only achieved about 59% of the theater's capacity, Deadline reported.

The revival's poor financial results will not bring an end to "Spamalot," however, as a national tour of the musical is set to launch in fall 2025. When the St. James production ends, it will have played 17 previews, 164 regular performances, Playbill reported.

"Spamalot" won Best Musical Tony Award

Monty Python's "Spamalot," which is based on the comedy troupe's 1975 film "Monty Python and the Holy Grail," opened March 17, 2005 at Broadway's Shubert Theater and ran through Jan. 11, 2009 with 35 previews and 1,575 performances. Broadway in Austin Announces 2024-25 Season

Corn, kindness, and the boy who never grew up come to the bass, by richard whittaker , 8:30pm, tue. mar. 5, 2024.

broadway us tours 2023

The best of Broadway keeps making its way to Austin, with Texas Performing Arts announcing the titles for its 2024-25 Broadway in Austin season at the Bass Concert Hall. The schedule is filled with beloved classics like Hamilton and Funny Girl , and red hot new smashes like MJ and Shucked .

Season ticket holders can now get access to some of the best that Broadway has to offer, starting in the fall: MJ (Oct. 8-13), Shucked (Nov. 12-17), Peter Pan (Dec. 10-15), Clue (Jan. 14-19, 2025), Funny Girl (March 4-9, 2025), and Moulin Rouge! The Musical (May 13-25, 2025). Season ticket holders will be able to turn their six pack into seven with the return of Hamilton (March 25-April 7, 2025), and they get first dibs on tickets for Come From Away (Jan. 4-5, 2025) and Les Misérables (Feb. 4-9).

Broadway in Austin isn't the only programming done by Texas Performing Arts at the Bass Concert Hall. Just last week, the city's largest theatre was packed with grade schoolers for Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. "It was just remarkable," said Bob Bursey, Texas Performing Arts Executive and Artistic Director. Yet being able to host some of the biggest touring productions of some of the most massive Broadway hits is a real feather in the team's cap. It's a massive endeavor, between scheduling and making sure the venue can provide what the productions need. "The practicalities are certainly part of it," Bursey said, "but we're really looking for what is going to create a great season for our subscribers."

Six- and seven-ticket season packages are available now. Existing subscribers are automatically renewed, and can check out their invoice in their account before payment. New subscribers can find out about how to join at austin.broadway.com .

The 2024-25 season promises to be as exciting as the 2023-24 season, which is going out on a high note with Wicked , Girl From the North Country , and Frozen . But what of the future? "Broadway productions are so big days that we're having some conversations about some future shows that are hoping to go out on the road," Bursey said, "and we end up asking ourselves, 'Well, how will we make that work?' But we always find a way."

Of course, it helps that the Bass is the biggest stage is town, and has the capability to host large, technically demanding shows of the type that dominate Broadway today. Bursey glowed with pride. "It's incredible when it's full, as it so often is."

Sometimes you look at a story and think, how can they turn this into a musical? When MJ made a juke box musical about Michael Jackson, the question was more like "why hasn't this happened before?" The book by Lynn Nottage takes a peek into the rehearsal studios for the 1992 Dangerous World Tour, with choreography by Christopher Wheeldon getting the feel of developing those iconic dance moves. And, of course, a soundtrack drawn from that legendary and massive Jackson discography.

"I got to see it back in the spring," Bursey said, "and I was really impressed by how many people were drawn to it from around the world. It really reminded me that MJ is truly a global sensation, and his music transcends all kinds of geographic and cultural and political boundaries."

Who would expect a show inspired by Hee Haw to be the toast of Broadway? Yet the musical exploits of the corn-living residents of Cob County and their moonshinin' ways made for an unexpected smash when it lead the way after the Great White reopened post-lockdown. With book by Robert Horn ( Tootsie , Hercules ) and music by Nashville mainstays Shane McAnally and Brandy Clark, it's a tongue-in-cheek tale of love among the corn rows. Having only just wrapped up on its Broadway run in January, now Shucked departs New York with a Tony win and two Drama Desk Awards in its luggage.

Nothing says Christmas theatre like J.M. Barrie's tale of a the boy who never grew up, whether it be the original 1904 play (still a fixture of the British stage) or Jerome Robbins' 1954 musical. Now it'll be part of Austin's yuletide, with this adaptation of the Robbins' version by playwright Larissa FastHorse, directed by Lonny Price and with choreography by Lorin Latarro.

Come From Away

Jan. 4-5, 2025.

broadway us tours 2023

It's a short trip to town for Irene Sankoff and David Hein's true-life tale of an unexpected diversion. On September 11, 2001, the small Canadian town of Gander (pop. 11,000) suddenly took in 7,000 guests as 38 commercial flights were grounded after the attacks on the Pentagon and the World Trade Center. The Tony- and Olivier-winning musical is now on tour, a reminder of kindness in the darkness of moments.

The touching musical played Bass back in 2020 , the last Broadway in Austin show before another catastrophe, the pandemic, darkened the stage. Bursey said, "When I realized that they had that slot in the beginning of January available, I thought, gosh, what a great way to welcome the new year. The music is beautiful, it has great performances in it, and the story continues to be really relevant."

Not everything on Broadway is a musical – which is fortunate for Clue , since you couldn't hear the tunes over the laughter. The murderously funny farce brings the beloved 1985 movie comedy (based on Agatha Christie-loving designer Anthony E. Pratt's game Cluedo ) right up to date by keeping its post-war mansion house setting.

Bursey noted that there aren't many touring plays, but last year Bass managed to secure Aaron Sorkin's adaptation of To Kill a Mockingbird , with Richard Thomas as Atticus Finch . With the less serious Clue , he'd been pleasantly surprised by "how excited younger folks are by that. It's been really interesting how Broadway has had certain shows – Six was one, Hadestown is another – where high school kids and college age kids have been really interested in it, and Clue is one of those that we're seeing younger people being very, very drawn to."

Les Misérables

Feb 4–9, 2025.

The musical that proved you can make a musical out of anything. Megaproducer Cameron Mackintosh was thought to have lost his mind when he spent years bringing to the West End the French musical by Claude-Michel Schönberg (music), and Alain Boublil and Jean-Marc Natel (book and lyrics) based on Victor Hugo's epic novel of love and injustice. Multiple awards and revivals later (and that's on top of one of the longest Broadway runs ever), it's still a favorite.

Indeed, it's still picking up momentum after four decades of almost constant performance. Bursey said, "The tour is on the road right now, and in the cities that it's played in so far it's breaking attendance records."

Few musicals have been as loved and as tough to restage as Isobel Lennart's retelling of the career and personal struggles of Ziegfeld girl turned variety superstar Fanny Brice. It's taken decades for anyone to feel like they could step into the shadow of Barbra Streisand's defining turn on stage and screen as Brice. But this new version, with updated book by Harvey Fierstein, has given new life to the "My Man" musical.

"People are starting to appreciate it as one of the greatest musical scores of all time, and the classic songs that are in it," Bursey said. It's also another show that's found a younger audience, courtesy of Lea Michele's headlining turn in the most recent Broadway production. Plus, there's a strong local connection as the lighting designer is four-time Tony winner and UT alum Tony Adams. "He's a really wonderful theatre artist and a great person."

Is there anyone who hasn't seen Hamilton yet? Does it matter? After headlining the Broadway in Austin season with a sellout run in 2019 and a triumphant return in 2021 , Lin-Manuel Miranda's Tony-, Grammy-, and Pulitzer-winning modern classic makes Austin's biggest stage the room where it happens once again.

"It's a show that, to me, deserves repeat viewings easily," said Bursey. "Not only because of the history and the legacy and the impact that it had, but it's just an incredible show. I'm thrilled that we're able to bring it back."

Moulin Rouge! The Musical

May 13-25, 2025.

broadway us tours 2023

The stage version of Baz Luhrmann's juke box musical movie has become the modern musical, with ongoing productions in New York, London, and Cologne, as well as a touring version on the road. With a book by John Logan; music supervision, orchestrations, and arrangements by Justin Levine; and choreography by Sonya Tayeh, this spectacular adaptation took the original film and made it even wilder and more magical, bringing the story of doomed lovers Satine and Christian in Belle Epoque France to stages around the nation.

As the epitome of Broadway razzle dazzle, it's hard to imagine a better capper for the season. Bursey said, "It's all about the spectacle, and Baz Luhrmann's film being brought to life. It's an extravaganza. It's romance and excess and all of the theatrical magic."

The Broadway revival of Monty Python ‘s Spamalot will play its final performance on Sunday, April 7, completing a 24-week run at the St. James Theatre.

The production, which opened to favorable critical notices, failed to attract the strong audience figures that the original 2005 production drew. Last week, the production grossed just $589,970, with attendance at about 59% of the St. James’ capacity.

Sources tell Deadline that cost-cutting measures attempted in recent weeks have made little significant impact on the bottom line.

“I am so proud of the entire cast, creative team, musicians and crew for their hard work and for delivering the highest level of joy and laughter back on Broadway when we need this more than ever,” said producer Jeffrey Finn. “I’m also honored to continue the long legacy of Kennedy Center productions transferring to Broadway so audiences beyond DC can experience this glorious production of Spamalot at the St. James Theatre.”

The cast currently includes Jonathan Bennett, Alex Brightman, Christopher Fitzgerald, James Monroe Iglehart, Leslie Rodriguez Kritzer, Ethan Slater, Jimmy Smagula and Nik Walker, with David Josefsberg, Graham Stevens, Daniel Beeman, Maria Briggs, Gabriella Enriquez, Michael Fatica, Denis Lambert, Shina Ann Morris, Kaylee Olson, Kristin Piro, Drew Redington, Tyler Roberts, Anju Cloud, Darrell T. Joe, Lily Kaufmann and Charlie Sutton.
