Whale watching in the Dominican Republic: my experience + tours & pics

Written by Sam Van den Haute aka CheckOutSam

In the see-through seas around the Dominican Republic , there is much more to discover than just the colorful underwater world of the Caribbean. Every year, large groups of humpback whales come here to raise their offspring and this makes for very spectacular encounters. I already went whale watching all around the world ( Norway , Iceland , Madeira , the Azores ), but a meet-and-greet with these giants was nowhere as impressive as here! What can you expect when you go whale watching in the Dominican Republic? Where is the best place to see them and when is the best time? Everything you should know can be found in this article.

What will you read in this blog?

Whale watching in the Dominican Republic

After stuffing their bellies in the nutrient-rich oceans around the Arctic circle, whales return to more tropical places every year to raise their little ones. One of the best places to see this beautiful natural phenomenon is in the Caribbean. Therefore it really is a must-do when you go to the Dominican Republic !

There are two places to spot whales on this island nation, especially the majestic humpback whale. You can visit the Samana peninsula, but you can also spot them north of Puerto Plata at Silver Banks.

Dominican Republic whales

It is really wonderful how you can observe these animals from up close!

Whale watching in Samana

The most popular spot to go whale watching in the Dominican Republic is Samana. I personally think this is also the most magical part of the country, so I advise you to stay here for a few days anyway.

During whale season, boats depart daily from the lively harbor in search of the giants of the sea. Keep in mind that there’s a maximum of three boats that are allowed to cruise this protected marine park at the same time. That way, the whales don’t get stressed and can just keep on doing the things they like most.

Unlike many other places where you can see whales, whale watching tours in the Dominican Republic use fairly large boats where 50+ passengers are being seated. In my view, that has some advantages and disadvantages.

Because the boats are larger and heavier, you will not be able to go as fast and you will also have to stick to slightly more rules. Because of the size, you will also have to share your experience with many others. The latter actually provides a sense of connection to your fellow passengers, so you can turn it into an advantage too!

On the other hand, the size of the boat makes you less seasick and more importantly: you always have an upper deck. From here you get the very best views of the whales and you can also enjoy the wonderful sun at the same time.

In the marine protected area around Samana, it is possible to see hundreds of whales. Your chance of spotting these animals is therefore almost guaranteed. Be prepared for lots of tails, backs, blowholes and even full whale bodies jumping out of the water! Do not skip out on this spectacle during your vacation, because for me it was undoubtedly one of the best things to do in the Dominican Republic .

whale watching samana dominican Republic

Nowhere else in the world have I seen such active whales as here!

Whales in Silver Banks

Multi-day boat trips are also organized from Puerto Plata to Silver Banks, a relatively shallow bay that perfectly serves as a safe birthplace for the humpback whales. This is also one of the only places in the world where you can snorkel with whales.

Yes, you read that right! In the Dominican Republic you can swim with whales! However, the price tag for this unique experience is quite hefty! A seven-day excursion will cost you more than $ 4,000 per person. Fortunately, overnight stays on the boat, food and drink and encounters with the whales are included.

swimming with whales dominican Republic

Would you like to snorkel with these giants? Then Silver Banks is the best place to be.

snorkel whales silver banks

But it will not be cheap!

What can you expect? My experience

Unfortunately, my name is not Bill Gates or Scrooge McDuck, so I did not snorkel with the whales of the Dominican Republic. However, that does not mean that my excursion to Samana was not fun. For me it was the most impressive whale safari I ever did!

After climbing the boat, it is a good idea to climb to the top deck immediately. I also recommend not to wait too long before you get on the boat, because the seats at the upper deck are very popular amongst all guests!

While the trained crew members look for the first whales, you are presented with a lot of interesting information: Why exactly do humpback whales come to this place? What are they eating? Why do they have bumps? … While you get all these facts an fugres, cookies, sweets and drinks are also passed around. You will certainly not starve!

When the first whales are spotted, the boat quickly sails towards the dark silhouettes under the blue sea and you will already start hearing the first “ oohs ” and “ ahs ” from your fellow passengers. Once the tails come out of the water and slowly sink back down, you will only hear clicking cameras.

The feeling of being so close to these gigantic animals is truly indescribable. A whale tour would already feel magical if you only see some parts of the animals, but in the Dominican Republic it gets even more spectacular!

whale tours Dominican Republic

Usually you see a lot of fins and tails, but here I often got to see the whales in full!

breaching whales Samana

When you go whale watching in the Dominican Republic, you can see them breach out of the water with their whole bodies!

Non-stop jumping whales

During mating season, the humpback whales around the Dominican Republic jump much more out of the water than in other circumstances. The exact reason for this behavior is actually not known, but it is believed that males act like this to to attract the attention of females. However, the little calves also jump out of the water. Perhaps because they want to get the interest of their mothers back to themselves instead of seeing them all flirty with those big boys…

One thing is certain: it is very spectacular!! During my boat trip I saw these giants jumping out of the water more than twenty times and believe me… That is something you will never forget!

Right after the little ones jump to the surface, you will often see a concerned mother doing the same -or at least partially-. They emerge out of the ocean with their giant tails to help their babies. Since the little ones still have it difficult to stay right under the surface (to breathe), the mothers need to help them by pushing them up a little.

Once the whale watching in Samana has finished, you will also cruise around the famous Bacardi Island (Cayo Levantado).

Make sure that you still have some space on your camera, because this paradise island certainly provides some nice snaps.

Depending on the tour you have picked, some boats also spend some time on the island.

whales caribbean

Usually the first thing you see: a giant fog curtain that arises at the surface.

humpback whales Dominican Republic

You can only see the tails when the whales go under for a bit.

Whale tours in the Dominican Republic

Since there are only two sailings per day with three boats that are allowed on the water at a time and because the whale season in the Dominican Republic is limited, I recommend to book your whale tour as far in advance as possible. This way you are sure that you will actually be on board and that you can see these giants with your own eyes.

You can pre-book whale tours in the Dominican Republic via GetYourGuide . The advantage of this company is that you can always cancel for free up to 24 hours in advance. Viator is another trusted tour organization and does have more options. Usually, you can also cancel for free with this company, but you should always read the conditions carefully just to make sure.

Even if you are not staying in Samana, you can still see the humpbacks of the Dominican Republic! From Punta Cana there are many whale watching tours, but Puerto Plata and even Santo Domingo also offer these excursions.

Dominican Republic whale tours

Mama whale regularly shows off too!

Whale watching Samana: price?

The cheapest way to meet the whales of the Dominican Republic is to go to Samana on your own and arrange a tour from there. On average, this would cost around $55 per person , plus an additional $5 to enter the protected marine park.

Would you like to combine this trip with a visit to the famous Bacardi Island? This is possible from $80 per person (with lunch). A private cruise from Samana is possible for $95 per person (including a visit to Bacardi Island). The advantage of the latter excursion is that you don’t have to share the boat with anyone else.

Do you not have a car and are you staying far away from Samana? Then you can also be picked up in Las Terrenas. An excursion will cost you around $95 per person .

There are also whale watching tours from Punta Cana available. Since this tropical paradise is still a long way from Samana, an excursion will cost a bit more. On average you pay $150 per person (transfers included).

Do you want to see Samana’s whales but are you staying in Puerto Plata? An excursion with pick-up service will cost you around $100 per person .

whale watching Samana price

Believe me: this will be an excursion to remember!

Best time to see whales in the Dominican Republic?

The whale watching season in the Dominican Republic starts around mid-January and ends late March. During this period you are pretty much guaranteed to see whales. Tours and excursions are not conducted outside of these three months, so be on time!

If you are in the Caribbean outside this time, you can still see the majestic giants of the see elsewhere. In the Azores or around Madeira , you can see them  in the months of April to July. The best time to see whales in Iceland and Norway is from October to January.

With a little planning you can see these animals all over the world, no matter which month you go!

best time to see whales in dominican republic

Didn’t I say they really show everything?

Some more tips for whale watching in the Dominican Republic

Do not book this excursion on your last day. In bad weather (or a rough sea) you cannot go on a whale watching tour in the Dominican Republic. For this reason, boat trips are sometimes rescheduled to a later date (for free, of course!). If you are no longer in Samana (or Punta Cana ) at that time, you will not be able to see the animals. Rest assured: if you book through GetYourGuide , you will always get your money back or be able to reschedule to a later date. You can always cancel for free with them up to 24 hours in advance.

Take precautions against seasickness. You will be sailing on deep water, which can make the sea particularly rough. For that reason it is recommended to take a pill as a precaution to avoid getting seasick. Doesn’t that help? Keep your eyes on the horizon and don’t forget to breathe. It is best to avoid too much alcohol the night before you plan on whale watching in Samana. After all, it is important to hydrate well (so also drink plenty of water!).

Try to sit on the top deck. Fom here you get an unobstructed view over the animals (there are no side panels and there is no roof that hinders your view). Moreover, you can see the whale’s silhouette much easier from above in the transparent water and that really makes for some beautiful photos.

Make sure you have enough space on your memory cards! It is not easy to get a good picture of the tails, backs and gigantic jumping whale bodies! You often don’t know where the animals will turn up next and the constant rocking of the boat doesn’t make it any easier either! Do not forget to make some videos, because you will undoubtedly want to share your meeting with the whales of the Dominican Republic with family and friends!

Use plenty of sun cream. The Dominican sun shines fiercely and the reflection of the shimmering sea water burns you even faster than usual.

How to See the Whales in Samaná Bay

Humpback whale in Samaná Bay

Photo: Kit Korzun / Shutterstock.com

If you're in the Dominican Republic between January 15 - March 25, try to make the trek north to see the whales in Samaná. After all, they've come some 3000 miles to see you.

Samaná is the perfect place to watch the North Atlantic Humpback Whales who overwinter in the warm marine sanctuary of Samaná Bay before they begin their long migration to their summer grounds - as far away as Greenland and Iceland!

Not all the humpback whales travel in the same group, but at any one time during the Samaná whale-watching season , there are at least 300 whales in Samaná Bay. With all those whales, you’ll have ample chance to watch all sorts of behaviour on display - it’s more a matter of patience than luck.

Migration route

Once they leave the northern waters of Iceland and Greenland at the approach of winter, they follow the current of the Caribbean Sea from Puerto Rico to Punta Cana on the easternmost tip of the Dominican Republic, then to Samaná Bay, the Bahamas and up to the Gulf of Mexico. Finally, they make the trip back north to fatten up in the cold waters that are full of krill, their primary food.

The whale nursery in Samaná Bay is heavily protected. Only whale-watching boats are allowed to enter the bay, and even these are heavily restricted. Every spring, the interior of the bay essentially becomes a mothers' ward, for delivering calves and nursing. Male whales hang out towards the outer part of the bay.

What you’ll see

With a little patience and luck, you’ll see humpback whales leap out of the water in an incredible display of acrobatic grace. Scientists say they do this not just for fun, but to alert other whales to a good feeding ground, or as part of courting rituals. Sometimes, it's their way of getting rid of sunburnt skin after their long trip south.

Apart from seeing moms swimming around with their newborn calves, you'll also hear the males' courting songs. Your guide will use a hydrophone so you can listen in, but don't neglect to keep your eyes peeled for surface activity!

Some of the most exciting surface activity you’ll see happens when up to twenty male whales compete for mating rights with a female. The drama includes blowing water, head lunging, slamming each other, and breaching.

Breaching is when a whale launches into the air then crashes back down onto the water's surface. It's not too hard for the whale to achieve, but the sight is certainly impressive to humans, and presumably to other whales as well. Breaching is a common courting ritual (but not all breaching is part of courting - whales breach for plenty of reasons).

Some of the other movements to watch for are “flippering” - raising the flippers and flapping them against the water's surface, sort of a lesser breach. You'll also see them rolling in the water in a horizontal posture.

How to choose a boat trip

Because the bay can have strong undercurrents and plenty of spray at this time of year, it's best to go out in strong boats, built to properly house the number of travelers. If the boat looks overcrowded, don’t board it. Safety first.

Because Samaná Bay is officially protected as a whale sanctuary, the rules for viewing are pretty strict. Boat speed and number of boats near sighted whales are carefully controlled, making it a safer place for the whales - and for you. When you’re told something isn't permitted, trust your guide and adhere to the guidelines so that the whales can keep finding safe refuge here.

The oldest and most reputable Samaná whale-watching excursion is run by Whale Samaná . These guys are the pros, and it’s easy to book directly on their website. An on-board expert will narrate what's going on and answer your questions. Tickets start at $144 for an 8-hour excursion that includes a visit to Bacardi Island or Cayo Levantado.

Getting there

Most whale-watching tours include the option of transport to Samaná from Punta Cana and other cities. If you want to get here on your own steam, you can reach Samaná from other cities via air-conditioned Caribe Tours or Metro buses. If you’re not planning to stay overnight, it’s important to check when the last bus leaves from Samaná, as the hour might be earlier than you expect.

See how to get around in the Dominican Republic like a local.

While you’re here, don’t miss...

If there's time, try to make it to the Center for Conservation and Ecodevelopment of Samaná Bay and its Environment Whale Museum and Nature Center ( Museo de las Ballenas ) in Samaná before your tour. You'll appreciate your voyage into the Bay much better that way. The cost is 100 pesos to enter, and their hours are 9-11 AM and 2-5 PM daily.

Our Guide to Whale Watching in the Dominican Republic

A Visit to Punta Cana During Whale Season in the Dominican Republic Is Your Best Bet for Sighting Humpback Whales

Whale watching in the Dominican Republic is an unforgettable experience for visitors to Punta Cana

Every year from mid-December through April, thousands of humpback whales travel over 5,000 miles in their seasonal migration from the feeding grounds in the North Atlantic to the protected shallow reefs and warm waters off the coast of the Samaná Peninsula. Plan your visit to Punta Cana during peak season for whale watching in the Dominican Republic for a chance to observe these magnificent mammals in their natural habitat.

The humpbacks’ breeding season is the best time for whale watching in Punta Cana as the pods gather to mate, give birth, and nurse their young . Watching this endangered species breach, tail-slap, and perform acrobatics is truly one of life’s most unforgettable experiences.

Watching this endangered species breach, tail-slap, and perform acrobatics is truly one of life’s most unforgettable experiences

And Punta Cana is also the perfect point of departure from which to venture out into Samaná Bay, Navidad Bank, or Silver Bank , where you’ll even have a chance to swim with whales in the Dominican Republic.

During whale season in Samaná, you’ll see not just full-grown humpbacks, but also newborn calves swimming under their mothers’ watchful gaze. You’ll also sight plenty of male humpbacks battling for the attention of prospective mates , which is the main reason behind much of their flashier behavior like leaping out of the water into mid-air (a move known as “breaching”) or lobtailing (flapping their flukes to make a thunderous clap). Not to mention the ethereal song of the humpback whales that these fascinating mammals are known to sing during mating season.

Those of you who are unable to plan your visit during whale season in the Dominican Republic can rest assured, because other cetaceans drawn to the area, like bottle nose dolphins and or the Antillean manatee may be sighted year-round .

The waters off the northeastern coast of the Samaná Peninsula are a breeding ground for humpbacks and offer some of the best whale watching in the Dominican Republic

Why Observe Whale Migration in the Dominican Republic?

Observing cetaceans in their natural habitat is just one of the many memorable experiences Punta Cana has to offer , but whale season in the Dominican Republic bears special mention. With its privileged location at the confluence of the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, the Dominican Republic is a key point on the humpback whales’ itinerary.

The Navidad and Silver Banks Marine Mammals Sanctuary, off the coast of Samaná, has been one of the main breeding grounds for humpbacks for the past 50,000 years . So, humpback whale season in the Dominican Republic is truly a spectacle to behold and one of the essential experiences the Dominican Republic has in store for visitors.

Some conservationists point to the benefits of whale watching in helping to educate participants on whale behavior, ecology, and conservation needs . Many Samaná whale-watching tours include an educational component and are offered by certified naturalist guides who are qualified to interpret whale behavior. This makes a Samaná Bay whale-watching tour a must for any eco-adventurer visiting the Dominican Republic .

Another benefit of whale watching in the Dominican Republic is that, by imparting an economic value on this endangered species, the activity helps promote conservation efforts and serves as an added incentive for locals to ensure the animals’ welfare.

The Dominican Republic was the first country in the Caribbean to start offering whale-watching tours in the early 1980s

The Dominican Republic was the first country in the Caribbean to start offering whale-watching tours in the early 1980s. Thanks to this experience, the country is now known for its good whale-watching practices and whale tours in the Dominican Republic are considered a model for other Caribbean destinations .

In the Dominican Republic, whales are treated with the utmost respect. The waters of the humpback whale sanctuary are virtually off-limits to any boats other than whale-watching vessels , and there is a strictly regulated cap on the number of whale-watching permits allotted each year. This ensures that the whales feel safe and comfortable . In fact, they are so at ease and friendly that it’s even possible to go snorkeling with whales in the Dominican Republic and enjoy one of the most amazing aquatic adventures possible during your stay in Punta Cana.

The Best Options for whale watching in the Dominican Republic

If you’re staying in Punta Cana, you’ll find a varied selection of whale-watching tours on offer during whale season in Samaná. Half-day excursions to the Samaná sanctuary last from between 3 and 4 hours—depending on conditions at sea—, while full-day tours run between 6 and 8 hours. Most tours include a lunch stop and some beach time , so remember to bring your bathing suit. And whichever you pick, make sure you take sun screen and, of course, your camera; a whale-watching tour of Samaná Bay is sure to be a memorable excursion .

Another—pricier—option for whale watching in the Dominican Republic is booking a live-aboard tour to Silver Bank. This 649-square mile underwater carbonate platform is part of the Marine Mammal Sanctuary and lies about 56 miles offshore. Silver Bank is home to the largest seasonal population of humpbacks in the North Atlantic, drawing between 5,000 and 7,000 specimens during peak whale season in the Dominican Republic.

Although whale-watching is not a programed performance, the chances of spectacular sightings here is quite high. And these longer tours offer passengers the opportunity to experience passive in-water whale encounters for those eager to swim with humpback whales in the Dominican Republic .

If for any reason you are unable to book a boat excursion, the free on-land observatory at Punta Balandra is another great option for Samaná whale watching. The site offers amazing panoramic views of the Samaná Peninsula, and it’s estimated that 80% of the humpback whale population passes through here on its way to Samaná Bay.

And whether you choose to observe whales from dry land or make the voyage to Silver Bank, the Museo de las Ballenas—“whale museum”—in Samaná is a must-visit.

The facility features an awe-inspiring 40-foot humpback whale skeleton found in 1993. This attraction is the perfect way to prepare for or follow up on any Samaná whale tour and it’s also a great alternative if for some reason you’ve missed humpback whale season in the Dominican Republic.

Accommodations and Transport

When planning your whale-watching trip in the Dominican Republic, finding the right accommodations and transport options is essential. Here are some suggestions on where to stay and how to get around.

Accommodations

You can choose from a variety of accommodations to suit your needs and budget. In popular whale-watching areas like Punta Cana and Samaná, there are numerous hotels and all-inclusive resorts available. Some options include:

  • Barceló Bavaro Grand Resort in Punta Cana, which offers several whale-watching tours as part of their package.
  • Smaller boutique hotels in Samaná, such as Whale Samana , which specialize in whale-watching excursions.
  • All-inclusive resorts in Santo Domingo, where you can book whale-watching tours as an add-on to your stay.

Reaching the prime whale-watching spots is made easier with various transport options available. Some options include:

  • Public transport : Travel between cities like Punta Cana, Samaná, and Santo Domingo using air-conditioned Caribe Tours or Metro buses. Find more information here .
  • Excursion packages : Many whale-watching tour providers offer transport from major cities to Samaná Bay as part of their package. Check the tour details when booking your excursion.
  • Domestic flights : For a quicker and more comfortable journey, consider taking a domestic flight between cities like Santo Domingo and Samaná.
  • Car rental : If you prefer having the freedom to explore the Dominican Republic at your own pace, renting a car is a good option. Be sure to familiarize yourself with local driving rules and conditions.

Keep these accommodations and transport options in mind while planning your whale-watching adventure in the Dominican Republic. With the right choices, you’ll have a comfortable and memorable trip.

Practical Information

When planning your whale-watching adventure in the Dominican Republic, it’s essential to consider several factors to make your experience as enjoyable as possible.

First, familiarize yourself with the primary whale species you may encounter on your trip. In the Dominican Republic, you will mostly see North Atlantic Humpback Whales as they overwinter in the region’s warm waters before migrating to their summer grounds.

Capacity is a crucial aspect to keep in mind, as a crowded boat can detract from the experience. Opt for tours with limited capacity to ensure you’ll have a comfortable experience and ample opportunities to witness these majestic creatures up close.

It’s worth noting that the Caribbean waters around the Dominican Republic border the Atlantic, so sea conditions can change quickly. If you’re prone to seasickness, bring appropriate medication and remedies with you, such as ginger candy or acupressure bands to help alleviate symptoms.

While onboard, make sure to stay hydrated, especially under the hot Caribbean sun. Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and even some electrolyte replacements if necessary. Staying hydrated will help reduce the risks of heat exhaustion or heatstroke.

Two popular whale-watching locations in the Dominican Republic are Samaná Bay and Puerto Plata. Samaná Bay, located on the northeastern coast, is home to the Sanctuary of the Humpback Whales, providing a spectacular whale-watching experience. For those on the north coast, consider visiting Puerto Plata, where several tour operators offer trips to see whales during the season.

Here’s a summary of essential information:

  • Whale species: North Atlantic Humpback Whales
  • Capacity: Choose tours with limited capacity
  • Conditions: Prepare for Caribbean waters and the Atlantic’s unpredictable conditions
  • Seasickness: Bring remedies if needed
  • Stay hydrated: Bring water, sunscreen, and electrolyte replacements
  • Popular locations: Samaná Bay and Puerto Plata

By following these practical tips, you can ensure your whale-watching experience in the Dominican Republic is both memorable and enjoyable.

If arriving from other destinations in the Dominican Republic, whale-watching (e.g. from Puerto Plata, Santo Domingo or Boca Chica) is possible as well. There are more explanations further below in this article, but in case you’re only looking for the best tour to book, check out the following table.

When is the whale watching season in the Dominican Republic?

Generally spoken, the Samaná whale watching season in the Dominican Republic lasts from January to March. Interestingly enough, when you browse through the internet, you find different dates as of when whale watching excursions from Punta Cana or in Samaná are operated. Some start as early as the 15th of December but finish already on 15th of March, others only start on the 15th of January but have their tours running until the 31st of March, some even until mid-April. These differences seem weird as all the tours are operated into the same territory of the humpback whales in the Dominican Republic, the Bay of Samaná.

According to my experience from selling customized vacation packages to clients for 5 years and working closely together with many whale watching tour operators (including having been on several of their excursions), December seems quite early to me and I would not book a tour in this month, as the chance that it gets canceled is pretty high.

If you book your whale watching excursion * between the 15th of January and 25th of March , you get the best time for whale watching in the Dominican Republic. During these days your tour definitely takes place and won’t get canceled (as long as the weather permits), it doesn’t matter if you start from Punta Cana, Santo Domingo , Bayahibe or Samaná.

Everything before or after those dates, so before mid of January or after the end of March, is subject to the whale watching conditions in the year of your vacation as the humpback whales in the Dominican Republic don’t have a calendar, so they might arrive already late December or only after some days in January.

The more you stick to the best time for whale watching in Punta Cana and Samaná (15th of January until 25th of March), the better are your chances of many whale sightings. Even there might be a dozen whales at the end of December or the beginning of January (which will be hard to spot), you have much better chances of spotting humpback whales in the main whale watching season when there are hundreds to thousands of whales in the Samaná Bay.

This being said, your chances of seeing whales on an excursion are nearly at 100% when sticking to those dates, as the Samaná whales are usually easy to spot.

Whalewatching in Samaná, one of the top highlights in the Dominican Republic

What kind of whales can you see in the Dominican Republic?

The vast majority of whales in the Dominican Republic are humpback whales, one of the largest mammals in the world . The adults can get as big as 52 feet and weigh as much as 30 tons. You can imagine that it is a true spectacle to watch these giants playing in the open ocean, especially when their large fins – which make up to a third of their body lengths – are splashing into the water. The other particular characteristic of the humpback whale is that it comes to the surface to breathe, which makes it particularly interesting to watch the whales in their daily life during a whale watching excursion in the Dominican Republic.

The humpback whales are coming to the warm waters of the Samaná Bay each year, as the conditions of the Caribbean are much more favorable for breeding and the birth of their babies. Here in Samaná, the babies – which get born with a bodyweight of just 1 ton – have sufficient time to eat enough and get strong to follow the mother on the return trip to the colder waters.

The humpback whales in the Dominican Republic travel up to 16.000 miles (!) each year for migration purposes, that’s more than 10 times the distance from New York to Punta Cana.

Because of the special relationship between the mother and their baby, you often can see them together when going on a whale watching tour from Punta Cana in the Samaná Bay. Observing them swimming together in the ocean is a particularly heartwarming moment.

The best-reviewed whale watching excursions in Punta Cana

As mentioned earlier, there are tons of Samaná Bay whale watching tours out there, especially when staying in Punta Cana. If you want to make sure you have a pleasant experience, it pays out to check the review from past travelers. Even though the itineraries are usually similar, the quality of the guides, the level of the organization and the overall experience is usually better at tours with a good track record. Therefore, the following overview shows you the best whale watching excursions from Punta Cana according to the reviews.

Private tours for whale watching in the Dominican Republic

For a particular exclusive experience, you can also book a private whale watching tour in the Dominican Republic. This means, you have the entire boat for you and get your preferred seat. You are also more flexible in terms of starting time, pick-up time and all the other details of the tour. Furthermore, you can decide how long you want to stay on Cayo Levantado or if you don’t want to go at all.

Usually, private whale watching tours are operated in much smaller vessels which means on the one hand that they are more flexible and you feel even closer when seeing the humpback whale in the Samaná Bay, but on the other hand, you might feel the waves even more just in case the ocean is a bit choppy. However, in the end, it is usually a great experience as the boat can adjust to your needs and preferences.

Currently, the following private whale watching excursions are available: – private whale watching from Punta Cana * – private whale watching from Santo Domingo * – private whale watching from Samaná * – private whale watching from Boca Chica and Juan Dolio * – private whale watching from La Romana and Bayahibe * – private whale watching from Sabana de la Mar *

Also from other regions in the Dominican Republic private whale watching excursions are possible, but the ones mentioned above are currently those which are available for direct online booking.

Another advantage of private whale watching tours is that you don’t have to pick up passengers from other hotels, which makes the whole arrival process to the ports much smoother and quicker. Your group will also be significantly smaller (just you!), guaranteeing a much better experience.

Rules and regulations for whale watching in the Dominican Republic

The humpback whales were once an endangered species, especially in the 60s, when their population dropped by 90%. They still have to be protected and that’s why there are rules and regulations set by the Dominican Republic to ensure sustainable tourism and a non-harming approach to these mammals. Some of these rules are:

– A maximum of 3 boats is allowed for watching a group of whales at the same time. All other boats must wait at least 250 meters behind. – A boat is allowed to watch a group of whales for a maximum of 45 minutes. If other vessels are waiting, it is limited to 30 minutes. – There is a minimum distance to be respected, a boat can approach a group of whales not closer than 50 to 80 meters. – Vessels need to be sensitive with their engine when whale watching, so the engines should be put in neutral. – It is forbidden to watch whales from the air (so no helicopters or airplanes close to the breeding grounds). – It is forbidden to swim or snorkel with or close to the whales in the Samaná Bay.

In other words, you can’t swim with humpback whales in the Dominican Republic.

Furthermore, as the waters of Samaná are located in a dead-end (water-wise), there is no through-traffic of any other boats which further protects the humpback whales in the Dominican Republic and makes the entire tour a very eco-friendly excursion from Punta Cana . It is the best animal watching opportunity you will have in Punta Cana, especially considering that most of the animals in other tours in Punta Cana (those we don’t mention here on Punta Cana Travel Blog) are living in captivity, such as the dolphins, monkeys or stingrays. Of course, if you are traveling on a road trip through the Dominican Republic there are other chances of seeing animals in their natural habitats, such as the flamingos or crocodiles in the Southwest or the manatees on the north coast.

Interestingly enough, while in tourism money often counts more than sustainability (particularly in the Dominican Republic) and regulations are usually just treated as recommendations (and are not enforced if you pay a little “tip”), the whale watching rules are pretty strictly enforced , which is absolutely supportable. If tour operators don’t have a Samaná Bay whale watching license, they get pulled out pretty quickly and if they don’t respect the distancing rules concerning the whales, they get fined and might lose their license. This is why whale watching in the Dominican Republic is one of the very few animal encounters in the Dominican Republic I can recommend.

All of these rules guarantee that you see a high amount of mammals when going on a whale watching excursion in the Dominican Republic.

Where can you go whale watching in the Dominican Republic?

The Dominican Republic has two of only a few breeding grounds in the entire North Atlantic. One of those is the much more difficult accessible area of Silver Banks between the Dominican Republic and the Turks and Caicos Islands. To go on a whale watching tour here, you need to take an expensive 7-day-cruise-expedition, which I have described here a little bit further , as it is allowed to swim with the whales in Silver Banks.

The second spot for whale watching in the Dominican Republic is the Bay of Samaná, which you can reach on day trips from Punta Cana , Santo Domingo or Puerto Plata . 99% of all tourists are going to whale watch in this area as it is much easier accessible and doable as an excursion.

Both areas are fully protected by the Dominican government and the rules as outlined above are applying.

Whale watching from Punta Cana (Dominican Republic)

Whale watching excursions by bus and boat from punta cana.

Whale watching by bus and boat is the most popular excursion in Punta Cana when it comes to observing these spectacular mammals. They offer the best price-value-ratio and are usually leaving every day during whale watching season (see above for the best time for Samaná whale watching). You can check out the departure days right here *.

If you are traveling from April to December – outside of whale watching season – you can continue reading here about the excursion to Salto El Limón , as this is kind of a substitute excursion with similar areas during this season.

Most excursions from Punta Cana are not including just the whale watching in the Samaná Bay, but also a visit to Cayo Levantado, which is widely known as Bacardi Island. Other Samaná whale watching tours also include the visit of the waterfall Salto El Limón . Hence you can combine this amazing nature experience with some relaxing time at a gorgeous beach on the Samaná peninsula . On the other side, be prepared for a long day out of your resort as most tours are lasting between 10 and 12 hours, some even up to 14 hours if you do several stops on other all-inclusive resorts in Punta Cana before heading north.

Most whale watching excursions from Punta Cana start in the morning between 6 to 7 am, 07:30 am if you are lucky. 😉

You board the bus and head northwestward on a scenic but not spectacular journey. You drive along a newly built road between the mountains of the Cordillera Oriental (which is also home to Montaña Redonda ) and the coastline, passing small villages and abundant rice terraces. The journey from Punta Cana by bus takes around 1.5-2 hours.

View from Montana Redonda on the Cordillera Oriental

One of the small ports between Miches and Sabana de la Mar is your destination (which one depends on the tour operator you book, usually it is Miches itself or Las Cañitas), where you change over to your boat. The boat, usually a medium-sized vessel with a capacity for 40 to 100 passengers, brings you closer to the Samaná peninsula, where most of the breeding grounds of the whales can be found. Depending on the wind and the waves, the ride might be choppy so take some seasickness pills with you in case you are sensitive to these influences.

Once you are in the center of the Samaná whale watching area, your captain and your guide are observing the area to spot some of the humpback whales in the Dominican Republic. This might take a few minutes but once spotted, you usually can see several of them – either different groups acting differently or some whales playing with each other. Often you can also see a mother with their baby swimming together or two males splashing with their fins to attract the females. If you are lucky, you even see those big mammals right next to your vessel.

Usually, the whole whale watching “action” lasts around 60 to 90 minutes, depending on the sightings, the other boats and the remaining itinerary. That’s the time you fully spend within the observing area of the humpback whales. Afterwards, you head towards Cayo Levantado, the island which is already part of Samaná and features a picturesque beach . Here you can relax, have lunch, drink some tropical cocktails and swim in the turquoise ocean. Were you dreaming of drinking a Piña Colada right from a fresh Caribbean pineapple? Here on Cayo Levantado, you can get it. Just note that on some days Bacardi Island might be crowded, especially if there are cruise ships at the port of Samaná.

The island Cayo Levantado in the bay of Samana, also called Bacardi Island

After approx. 3 hours on Cayo Levantado you board your boat again, head back to the mainland (a ride of about 30 minutes) and change to your bus for the remaining 1.5-2 hours to Punta Cana.

Some excursions also include the visit to the waterfall Salto El Limón . In this case, you have a much shorter time at Cayo Leventado to relax, usually not more than an hour (or none at all, as some tours are skipping Bacardi Island completely). The trip to Salto El Limón is first done by bus or safari truck (approx. 30 minutes per way) before you mount a horse for a ride to the picturesque waterfall. Once you have arrived at the waterfall, you can have a dip into the natural swimming pool and take stunning photos before heading back. Please note that the horses are usually in a bad shape and the horse guides completely rely on tips from the tourists, they don’t get paid. Read more about this topic here in this article about Salto El Limón – and also why I wouldn’t recommend the horseback ride, you better opt for the hike instead.

The waterfall of Salto El Limon, one of the most picturesque waterfalls in the Dominican Republic

When booking your excursion, I would recommend picking a non-cruise day, as otherwise, the beach of Cayo Levantado is very crowded. You can check the cruise ship days of Samaná here *. Furthermore, check that your tour includes lunch (which is usually the case).

Prices for whale watching from Punta Cana usually range from 130 USD to 200 USD. If you book here you get onboard with a recommended tour operator *. You can also check the table further above, listing the whale watching excursions from Punta Cana with the best reviews.

Whale watching excursions by plane and boat from Punta Cana

Are you tired of riding a bus for such a long time, including the pick-up and drop-off from various hotels? Then a whale watching excursion from Punta Cana by plane might be the best option for you. Instead of the bus ride along the northeast coast of the Dominican Republic and the boat trip across the Samaná Bay, you board a plane and fly directly to Samaná, where it is just a 10-minute hop from the airport to the port. This port is much closer to the Samaná Bay whale watching area than the port you use when coming from Punta Cana by land, so the boat ride will also be much shorter. Interested? Then check out the departure days here *. Same as for all whale watching excursions, these tours are only available between January and March.

The biggest advantages of those tours by plane are the much quicker travel time to the Samaná Bay as well as that you go in much smaller groups – usually, the planes are fitting between 8 and 19 passengers. This reduces the tour time significantly, giving you more quality time in your hotel, less time in the bus and more focus on the highlight of this excursion – the humpback whales in the Dominican Republic.

After the Samaná Bay whale watching, you also head to Cayo Levantado to relax and enjoy the tropical surrounding. After this quality beach time – instead of heading back 30 minutes by boat and around 2 hours by bus – you just have a 10-minute boat ride, a short 10-minute airport transfer and afterwards a 20-30-minute scenic flight to Punta Cana, where you can admire the natural beauty of the Dominican Republic from above. That’s another big advantage of these tours as the views are amazing.

Air Excursions from Punta Cana are obviously more expensive than by land, but it is worth to check out the best prices here *.

Playa Esmeralda seen from above, during the flight from Punta Cana in direction to the Samaná peninsula

You’d like to organize your own whale watching excursion from Punta Cana because you don’t like long bus rides or big groups? Well, this is a bit difficult. Most tours for individual travelers are only starting at the port of Samaná, which is between 4-5 hours driving away. If you’d like to do this, please read on in my article about Salto El Limón how you can organize a road-trip or multi-day itinerary from Punta Cana to Samaná .

Alternatively, if you have a car rental in Punta Cana, you can head up to Miches respectively Sabana de la Mar and take the whale-watching boat directly from there. You not only have a much quicker transfer, you mostly also don’t have the stop at Cayo Levantado which means that this is the perfect option if you’re looking for whale-watching just as a half-day excursion.

Whale watching from Samaná (Dominican Republic)

You are already in Samaná or on vacation in Las Galeras or Las Terrenas? Congratulations, you completed the majority of the journey and are so close seeing the humpback whales in the Dominican Republic.

Guided whale watching excursions from your hotel

If you are staying in a hotel without a car rental , I recommend a whale watching tour which includes pick-up and drop-off, so you don’t have to worry about anything. It doesn’t matter if you stay in Las Terrenas or Las Galeras, from both beach towns it’s approximately 30 (Las Galeras) to 60 minutes (Las Terrenas) driving time until you reach the port of Santa Barbara de Samaná, where your whale watching excursion by boat is going to start.

From here, it is a similar tour than the option by air from Punta Cana – you have a 10-20-minute boat ride until you reach the observing area of the whales. Once there, you also spend around 60 to 90 minutes looking for the humpback whales, seeing them jumping or accompanying them on their journey through the open ocean.

P.S.: My photos just show 10% of what you can actually see from the whales. Sometimes it’s just difficult to take photos, especially as I am only traveling with my smartphone camera. The actual encounters during your whale watching excursion in Samaná are much more impressive and a lot closer than this photo.

Whalewatching from Punta Cana in the Bay of Samaná

Most of the tours also include the stop at Cayo Levantado, where you can relax, swim, sunbath and eat. In the afternoon you head back to the mainland of Samaná and get shuttled back to your hotel. The biggest difference when staying in Samaná compared to Punta Cana: your tour only lasts around 6-8 hours instead of 10 to 12 hours, so you spend much less time on the bus. Tours run daily during whale watching season and the best time to go for an excursion is the same as explained initially: mid of January until the end of March. Check out the available departures here *.

The price of those tours is usually between 75 USD and 120 USD per person. You can book with recommendable tour operators here *. For a cheaper option and if staying in Las Terrenas, you can also check if the departure dates of this tour operator * are fitting to your travel dates.

You are based in Samaná or elsewhere along the North Coast and have your own rental car ? In this case, you can head straight to the city of Santa Barbara de Samaná, the home base of nearly all whale watching tour operators. Park your car at the oceanfront promenade (the “Malecón”) of the city and head straight to one of the offices from those tour operators. Moto Marina, Whale Samaná or Ozeanic Caribbean are a few operators I have experience with and I can recommend. Most tours are starting in the morning between 09:00 and 09:30, sometimes there are also afternoon tours starting at noon or 1 pm.

The whale watching excursions starting directly from Santa Barbara de Samaná are similar to the ones described in the section above, just without transfer. The only difference is that Cayo Levantado is optional for most tours – so if you want, you can just have the whale watching experience and are back to explore other highlights of the Samaná peninsula by noon or 1 pm.

Whale watching in the Dominican Republic (from other locations)

Whale watching in the Dominican Republic is also possible from many other locations in the country. This is particular due to the Bay of Samaná being reachable from nearly every vacation spot in 2-3 hours. It doesn’t matter if you are located in Santo Domingo, Puerto Plata, Cabarete or Bayahibe – a port where whale watching boats are leaving is always reachable within 100 miles or less.

The following table shows you from which cities in the Dominican Republic whale watching is possible. Click on the button to see more information about prices, availability and departure dates for these whale watching tours from Puerto Plata, Santo Domingo, Bayahibe, Las Terrenas, Boca Chica and more.

My experiences with whale watching tours from Punta Cana and Samaná

Since my first tour in the Samaná Bay, I did the whale watching tour three times, among them two excursions from Punta Cana . Organization, transfers and boat rides were spotless all the time and I am always surprised how many whales you can actually see.

I would say that you have a 99% guarantee to see some (a lot!) whales in the Dominican Republic. And if not, don’t worry, most tour operators give you a second tour for free if you haven’t seen humpback whales on your first occasion.

Furthermore, I am always stunned by how close you can see the whales. They are sometimes jumping out of the water just a few meters in front of the boat.

In total, I would say that I had around 15-20 sightings on average on each tour, maybe even more. That’s a pretty good opportunity I would say. 🙂

So make sure you seize the chance and book a whale watching excursion during your Punta Cana vacation *, of course only if you are visiting the Dominican Republic during whale watching season (January to March).

The visit on the island of Cayo Levantado is a nice add-on to explore a different beach than the area around your accommodation. Especially if you go on days when there are no cruise ships, it is also not too crowded. If you already went on the excursion to Isla Saona , you might not be too excited, as Cayo Levantado can’t compete with Isla Saona.

I never did the whale watching excursion by plane * but would recommend doing so if money is not too much an issue. Especially the views from the air on the mountains of the Cordillera Oriental are amazing ( I was lucky enough to fly the same approach on commercial flights a couple of times) and you also get a bird’s eye view of the Samaná Bay. Furthermore, those groups are smaller and more exclusive.

Whale watching season lasts from January to March. The best chances to see the humpback whales in the Dominican Republic are between the 15th of January until the 25th of March.

Prices for Samaná whale watching vary depending on where you start your tour. From Punta Cana and other destinations in the Dominican Republic, prices are usually between 130 USD and 200 USD. If you start right from Samaná, prices range from 65 USD to 95 USD per person.

Samaná whale watching tours are best booked in advance. By using the online excursions presented above, you can take advantage of getting the best prices and booking the best-reviewed tours.

Yes, most whale watching tours include a visit of Cayo Levantado (Bacardi Island). Check the tour description for details.

No, swimming with the whales in the Dominican Republic is not allowed.

The best time for whale watching in the Dominican Republic is from January until March. Usually, you have the best chances to see humpback whales from mid-January to mid-March.

You can see giant humpback whales in the Dominican Republic from January to March. The easiest to see them is if you head on a whale-watching excursion. The article above explains how to book them, depending on where you’re staying.

Every year in the first quarter of the year, humpback whales can be seen in the Dominican Republic. They are migrating into the bay of Samaná, where they’re giving birth to their babies. This is when you can go on excursions for whale watching in the Dominican Republic.

What do you think about whale watching in the Dominican Republic? Are you interested to go? Have you seen humpback whales on other occasions? What was your favorite encounter? Let me know in the comments, I am happy to hear about it.

SHARING IS CARING! IF YOU ENJOYED THIS ARTICLE, PLEASE SHARE WITH YOUR FRIENDS – I WOULD APPRECIATE IT A LOT.

What are the chances to see whales from the shore when residing in Semana bay? What are the chances of seeing whales on the whale watching tours over the Christmas period? Regards, T

Hi TH, hmm, Christmas time is still pretty early – I would rate the chances to see whales in the Samaná Bay at not more than 20%. I hope this helps – let me know if you have further questions. Chris

Whale Watching in the Dominican Republic: A Majestic Encounter with Humpback Whales

BE Luxury Collection

Published:2024-01-16

The Dominican Republic, known for its stunning beaches, vibrant culture, and lush landscapes, also offers a unique and awe-inspiring experience for nature enthusiasts – whale watching. Every year, from January to March, the warm waters surrounding the Samaná Peninsula become a stage for one of the most spectacular shows in the animal kingdom: the annual migration of humpback whales.

The Humpback Whales of Samaná:

Samaná Bay, located on the northeast coast of the Dominican Republic, serves as a crucial breeding and calving ground for humpback whales. These gentle giants, known for their acrobatic displays and haunting songs, migrate from their feeding grounds in the North Atlantic to the Caribbean to give birth and mate. The calm and protected waters of Samaná Bay provide an ideal environment for these majestic creatures during this important period in their life cycle.

The Whale Watching Experience:

Whale watching tours in the Dominican Republic offer an up-close and personal encounter with these magnificent marine mammals. Tour operators in the region provide boat trips that take visitors into the heart of Samaná Bay, where the chances of spotting humpback whales and their playful calves are remarkably high. Knowledgeable guides, often marine biologists or naturalists, accompany these tours, providing valuable insights into the behavior, biology, and conservation efforts for these incredible creatures.

During the whale watching excursions, visitors can witness a range of behaviors, including breaching, tail slapping, and even singing. Humpback whales are known for their acrobatic displays, and seeing these enormous creatures breach out of the water is a sight that leaves a lasting impression. The experience of hearing their haunting songs, which can travel for miles underwater, adds an extra layer of wonder to the adventure.

Environmental Conservation and Responsible Tourism:

While the thrill of observing these magnificent creatures is undeniable, it is crucial to prioritize responsible and sustainable whale watching practices. The Dominican Republic has implemented strict regulations to ensure the protection of humpback whales and their natural habitats. Tour operators adhere to guidelines that promote a safe distance between boats and the whales, minimizing disturbance to their natural behaviors.

Additionally, education plays a vital role in raising awareness about the importance of marine conservation. Many tour operators incorporate informative sessions into their excursions, enlightening visitors about the significance of preserving the oceans and the role they can play in protecting these incredible marine species.

Whale watching in the Dominican Republic offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to witness the beauty and grace of humpback whales in their natural habitat. The Samaná Peninsula, with its calm and warm waters, becomes a sanctuary for these giants during their annual migration. As visitors embark on whale watching tours, they not only witness breathtaking displays of nature’s wonders but also contribute to the conservation efforts aimed at ensuring the long-term survival of these magnificent creatures. So, if you’re seeking an unforgettable adventure that combines education, conservation, and awe-inspiring moments, make sure to include whale watching in the Dominican Republic on your travel itinerary. Important Note Regarding Kim's Guarantee:

Kim offers a guarantee that you will see the whales. If you don't see them you are welcome to come back on a day when she has room for you. We are happy to work with you if you do not see whales but in order for us to do so we must be able to coordinate your make up trip to see the whales so that it falls on a day when we have other people, from the same area as you, already going on Kim's tour. Unfortunately we cannot come to pick you up only. We are sorry about this policy but it's the best we can do. Kim makes many trips with empty seats available for you and we do the same with our open seats on transportation that we have already going for her tours. Note: You can bring pets on this tour. Please just let us know ahead of time.

Punta Cana Whale Watching

PUNTA CANA WHALE WATCHING

whale watching

The male humpback whales are driven to mate with the females and pro-create. It is common during the height of the Dominican whale watching season to find large competitive groups (pods) of male humpback whales jousting for the opportunity to mate with a single female. Watching them is an exciting experience, as they wrestle with each other for the position to mate.

The female humpback whales, with new born calves, are particularly vulnerable to the advances of the males during the Punta Cana whale watching season. Sometimes during our whale watch we are mugged (an affectionate term), by the female and her calf as she uses our large yacht to hide under in an attempt to ditch the hopeful males. Other times curiosity causes them to come closer to us. Being mugged on a whale watch in Samana, by humpback whales, is the ultimate whale watching experience where photo opportunities create cherished memories.

Best Time to Visit the Dominican Republic

Deciding on the best time to visit the Dominican Republic depends on your preferences and what kind of experience you seek.

Peak Season (December-April): This is the peak tourism season because many people head to the Caribbean during the winter months to escape the typical cold weather experienced in the United States, Europe, and many other countries.

During peak season, you can expect weather ranging from highs in the low 80s and lows in the  mid-70s, making it an excellent time to relax on the Dominican Republic beaches, hit the links at one of the phenomenal golf courses in the area, or enjoy the warm Atlantic ocean water. However, you can also expect higher prices for flights and accommodations due to the popularity of the Dominican Republic during the peak season.

Shoulder Season (May-June and September-November): These months are a great time to visit the Dominican Republic due to fewer crowds compared to the high season and less humidity and heat during the season. You can typically expect highs in the mid-80s and lows in the low 70s, making it a great time to visit for those looking for warm weather, enjoy the Caribbean beaches, and experience warm waters outdoors.

Off Season (July-August): July and August are considered the low season in the Dominican Republic. Many people avoid traveling to the Caribbean during these months due to the high heat and humidity. Highs in the upper 80s and lows in the mid-70s with significant humidity. Due to July and August being the off-season, you can typically expect more accommodation and flight deals!

There is never a wrong time to visit the Dominican Republic. However, May-June and September-November are optimal for those looking to escape to the island with warm weather and fewer crowds.
