Ted Nugent plays possible Michigan swan song as farewell tour hits Sterling Heights

ted nugent tour 2023 michigan

Decades after he first stepped onto a Detroit stage, Ted Nugent may have played his final concert here.

On a fittingly lightning-streaked Friday night in Sterling Heights, the 75-year-old Detroit native offered a dependably high-octane set of testosterone-fueled rock for a packed Michigan Lottery Amphitheatre.

And there was the obligatory political orating, including sharply worded attacks on President Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. The stage included a pair of banners featuring silhouetted AR-15s and the inscription “I WILL NOT COMPLY.”

As always with a Nugent homecoming show, the evening came steeped in Michigan flavor, from the state flag that joined an American one onstage to the pre-show warm-up music that featured songs by Bob Seger, Kid Rock, Mitch Ryder & the Detroit Wheels and more. The stage backdrop featured Nugent’s familiar logo alongside the phrase “Detroit Muscle.”

Since announcing his Adios Mofo ’23 farewell tour this spring, Nugent hasn’t announced a definitive end date, saying that while he’s not done with music, he is certainly winding down his road career. “A hotel room is jail for me,” he said in April.

So as things stand, Friday’s Sterling Heights show and Wednesday’s stop in Saginaw would be Nugent’s final Michigan tour dates.

He didn't acknowledge that possibility onstage Friday, and in fact claimed he's having a blast performing.

"I've been doing this since I was born in Detroit, and funny thing is, man, I enjoy it now more than ever," he said. "I'm an old (guy), but I persevere."

Friday's set list stuck to the script of Nugent’s shows in recent years, kicking off with his instrumental performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner” before focusing on the guitar-heavy ‘70s stuff that made his name, punctuated by his distinctive molten solos full of fast-bending notes and searing tones. If Nugent is indeed ready to take his final onstage bow, it’s not because his guitar playing is suffering.

The night’s only latter-day number — “Come and Take It” from last year’s “Detroit Muscle” album — was refitted into a “F--- Joe Biden” chant.

Nugent dropped the Tarzan entrances and onstage buffaloes years ago, but his natural-born showman was nevertheless on display Friday, even if most of the energy was now channeled to his guitar playing and lively between-song chatter.

Armed with his trusty ’62 Gibson Byrdland guitar (built in Kalamazoo, as he pointed out), Nugent was joined by 28-year-old Fraser native Jason Hartless on drums and by bassist Johnny Schoen, who also provided backing vocals and took lead on the more demanding lines of “Stranglehold.”

It wouldn’t be a Nugent appearance in 2023 without some incendiary political pronouncements, though he saved them Friday for late in the show.

Nugent, who in recent years has sparked more headlines for his outspoken conservative views than for his music, got on a roll.

If people had heeded his political guidance all these years, he said to cheers, Joe Biden would be in “a straitjacket in a cage” and Hillary Clinton would be in front of “a firing squad.”

Nugent had profane epithets for political leaders in Washington and Lansing, and spoke of “jackbooted thugs in the government and the media.”

“It’s so good to see my crowd here — there’s only men and women here tonight,” he said in a clear reference to the rise in nonbinary gender identification. “That’s so beautiful: the men and the women.”

Nugent saluted the military members and law-enforcement officers in the audience while encouraging them to push back: “If you’re a sheriff deputy, if you’re a city cop, if you’re a state trooper, if you’re in the military, and your boss tells you to do something against your oath, arrest that m-----f-----."

And he defended his frank approach.

“I’ve always been a big mouth, because I’m a free American,” Nugent said. “And all Americans ought to be just like me.”

The 90-minute show featured the Nugent staples: “Motor City Madhouse,” “Free-For-All,” “Wang Dang Sweet Poontang,” “Cat Scratch Fever” and “Stranglehold.” “Snakeskin Cowboys” offered a slinky feel and expressive guitar solo, while “Hey Baby” came with its own changeup groove, with the Amboy Dukes’ “The Great White Buffalo” eventually ending the regular set.

TED NUGENT Announces More Dates For 'Adios Mofo '23' Final Tour

Legendary rocker Ted Nugent has announced more dates for his last-ever tour, dubbed "Adios Mofo '23" .

In a video message explaining his decision to retire from the road, the 74-year-old Nugent said: "This is 'Adios Mofo' . This is my last tour. Now I'll always play music. I've got new records I'm gonna make. I can't wait to unleash some of these new songs. I've got an instrumental called 'Butter Fingers' that is just greasy. You can't eat barbecue ever again adequately without the song 'Butter Fingers' playing loud next to your brisket.

"The point being is thank you, everybody, for an incredible musical dream," he continued. "The musical dream will continue but I'm not going on tour anymore because hotels are jail. [ Laughs ] A hotel room is jail for me. My dogs won't allow me to not spend a day with them, so [my dogs] will go on the road with me this year. But the logistics are just too complicated when you have dogs and grandkids and kids and so many other things.

"The point is the American Dream has a soundtrack, and with my unbelievable musicians for 65 years, I have created the most fun, titillating, centrally stimulating soundtrack in the history of the world.

"Like last year, in 2022, 'Detroit Muscle' , this will be the greatest, most intense, tightest, most dynamic, outrageously fun tour of my life. But 'Adios Mofo'."

The tour dates are as follows:

Jul. 12 - Seminole Casino Hotel - Immokalee, FL Jul. 13 - Hard Rock Live - Orlando, FL Jul. 14 - Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino - Hollywood, FL Jul. 15 - Peabody Auditorium - Daytona Beach Jul. 16 - Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino - Tampa, FL Jul. 20 - Blue Gate Performing Arts Center - Shipshewana, IN, Jul. 21 - Hollywood Casino - Charles Town, WV Jul. 22 - The Mill - Terre Haute, IN Jul. 23 - Renfro Valley - New Barn Theater - Mount Vernon, KY Jul. 25 - Kodak Center - Rochester, NY26 - Keswick Theater - Glenside, PA Jul. 26 - Keswick Theater - Glenside, PA Jul. 27 - Penn's Peak - Jim Thorpe, PA Jul. 28 - Dragway 42 - West Salem, OH Jul. 29 - RidgeFest at Freedom Park - Chicago Ridge, IL Jul. 30 - RiverPark Center – Owensboro, KY Aug. 2 - Starland Ballroom - Sayreville, NJ Aug. 3 - American Music Theatre - Lancaster, PA Aug. 4 - The Meadows Racetrack & Casino - Washington, PA Aug. 5 - Clearfield County Fair - Clearfield, PA Aug. 6 - The Adelphia Music Hall - Marietta, OH Aug. 9 - The Temple Theatre - Saginaw, MI Aug. 10 - Rose Music Center - Huber Heights, OH Aug. 11 - Michigan Lottery Amphitheatre at Freedom Hill - Detroit, MI Aug. 12 - Des Plaines Theatre - Des Plaines, IL Aug. 13 - Arcada Theatre - St. Charles, IL Aug. 18 - Ford Park Arena - Beaumont, TX Aug. 19 - Billy Bob's Texas - Ft. Worth, TX Aug. 20 - Heart of Oklahoma Expo Center - Shawnee, OK

When the "Adios Mofo '23" tour was first announced last month, Ted said in a statement: "Performing my killer songs with this killer band for these killer music loving audiences every night is an indescribable joyous musical celebration beyond words. Every song has a life of its own and the spirit and energy of each night is off the charts stimulating on all human levels and beyond.

He added: "My amazing American Dream sure as hell ain't over, and no way can I even see it from here! However, my fiery vaportrail of flamethrowing all American R&B and rock 'n' roll has been so much damn fun, I can hardly believe it. I will write The Book, but for now, it's 'Adios Mofo '23' ! Thank you thank you thank you all!"

Ted 's concert in Birmingham, Alabama was recently canceled due to a backlash surrounding his controversial political views. The legendary rocker's July 18 performance at Avondale Brewing Co. was scrapped one day before tickets were to go on sale via Ticketmaster . The decision to call off the gig was apparently made in response to about 1,000 comments which were posted on Avondale Brewing's Facebook page after the show was announced, as well as more than 150 comments on the venue's Instagram page.

Nugent 's self-titled debut album in 1975 was certified double platinum in the United States, while "Free-for-All" , "Cat Scratch Fever" , "Weekend Warriors" and "State Of Shock" all reached the Top 30 on the Billboard 200 chart.

Nugent has reportedly sold over 40 million albums and was named Detroit's greatest guitar player of all time by readers of MLive .

The conservative rocker, who been eligible for the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame as a solo artist since 2000, has enjoyed a remarkably successful and eventful musical career over the past five decades, but his music is increasingly overshadowed by his political outbursts.

Nugent 's latest album, "Detroit Muscle" , was released in April 2022 via Pavement Music . The follow-up to 2018's "The Music Made Me Do It" was recorded with Ted 's most band, which included bassist Greg Smith and drummer Jason Hartless .

Last week, Smith , who had played bass for Ted for the past 16 years, announced his departure from the legendary rocker's touring band. He explained in a statement: "It was a difficult decision but one that I really had no choice in. With Ted no longer touring I had to accept an offer from a tour that will continue for the next several years. I tried to get someone to cover for me for the 2nd half, so I'd be able to do Ted 's tour, but I was unfortunately unable to."

Beloved and reviled, Michigan rocker Ted Nugent to perform in Saginaw

  • Published: Apr. 14, 2023, 7:30 a.m.

SAGINAW, MI — Known as much lately for his polarizing political views as his half-century-long music career, Michigan-born rocker Ted Nugent will perform his guitar-shredding songs in August at The Temple Theatre in Saginaw.

It’s an on-stage appearance theater officials understood could generate discourse — from fans and critics alike — about Nugent’s off-stage reputation, a spokesman for the venue said.

“We recognize that not everybody will appreciate everything in terms of that genre or the artist,” said Thor Rasmussen, the marketing and creative manager at the downtown theater. “But we also feel like there is an audience that does appreciate his music, and that’s worth recognizing in our community.”

Nugent’s hit catalogue includes 1970s-era radio mainstays such as “Stranglehold” and “Cat Scratch Fever” as well as the cult classic, “Fred Bear,” from 1995. The 76-year-old Redford native’s albums sales reportedly have topped 40 million. A 2012 MLive audience poll even crowned him “Detroit’s greatest guitarist,” perhaps a fitting nod for a musician many call “The Motor City Madman.”

If he’s inspired a hardcore fandom, Nugent also has animated plenty of critics. For much of his career, detractors have denounced aspects of his personal life as well as Nugent’s political outspokenness.

One of the earliest controversies came in 1977 when Nugent admitted to High Times magazine he purposefully failed a military draft physical during the height of the U.S. conflict in Vietnam, although he has since claimed the admission was a ruse.

This century, his firebrand reputation has centered on fervent advocacy for hot-button conservative causes. Most recently, his comments have provoked the LGBTQ+ community and its allies. Last month, during a Donald Trump campaign rally in Texas, Nugent called Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky “a homosexual weirdo,” a false claim about the Eastern European leader’s sexual orientation. Then, as recently as this week, Nugent joined fellow Michigan-born musician Kid Rock in criticizing Anheuser-Busch’s commercial partnership with transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney.

Despite some of the polarizing views, Nugent’s following remains large enough that fans began buying tickets at a steady rate for the Temple Theatre concert at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 9, Rasmussen said.

Seven days after the Nugent concert tickets went on sale, the Temple Theatre began selling tickets to a November rendition of “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” by The State Ballet of Ukraine. A ballet and a hard-rock concert from Nugent have little in common, except that both acts attract a wide variety of performing arts tastes to the downtown Saginaw venue, theater staff pointed out.

“One of the interesting things is that we do have broad and diverse interests throughout the Great Lakes Bay Region,” Rasmussen said.

In other words, Temple planners want to appeal to the area’s disparate arts-consuming constituencies.

“For those who may not like Ted Nugent, we respect that,” Rasmussen said. “We also have to respect that he’s been doing this for a long time, and people want to see him.”

The “Adios Mofo ‘23 Tour” kicks off for Nugent in July in Shipshewana, Indiana, before rolling across the United States. The rocker’s webpage showed the tour includes a Friday, Aug. 11, date at the Michigan Lottery Amphitheatre at Freedom Hill in Detroit.

Tickets remain on sale for Nugent’s Aug. 9 concert in Saginaw on The Temple Theatre website . Admission cost ranges from $39.50 to $79.50.

Ted Nugent Kicks Off Farewell Tour: Set List and Interview

Ted Nugent kicked off his Adios Mofo  farewell tour on Wednesday with a mix of fan favorites and deeper cuts during a 16-song set at the Seminole Casino Hotel in Immokalee, Florida.

"Last night was awesome, we played 4% of my favorite songs," Nugent laughs during a conversation with UCR the next morning. "I could be up there for 11 days and never run out of killer Ted Nugent songs to play. My feet just don’t touch the ground. The audiences are so intense. They hang on every note and every word, every musical passage. [Drummer] Jason Hartless, [bassist] Johnny [Schoen] and I, like all of my musicians, we always really, really focus maniacally on the groove, the dynamics, the musical movement and the adventure element. We played for two hours, and it was a dream."

The set list included a selection from Nugent's catalog, but there were also several teases tucked deep inside the songs. During "Stormtroopin'," for example, the band riffed a bit of ZZ Top's " Francine ," a first for Nugent, even though he's worked in bits of the band's other songs before.

"It’s the groove," he explains. "I mean, Billy [Gibbons] is a groove dog. He comes from the same school of Chuck Berry , Little Richard , Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters and Lightnin’ Hopkins that I do. We did gigs with ZZ Top going all of the way back to 1970 or 1971."

You can see the opening night set list below.

What to Expect on Ted Nugent's 2023 Tour

Fans can expect some of Nugent's friends and former bandmates to show up onstage as Adios Mofo's run continues. Amboy Dukes members K.J. Knight and Bob Leonard - "The first lead singer of the Amboy Dukes in 1965," Nugent adds - are among the expected. Nugent notes that drummer Tom Noel, from his earliest days with the Lourds, will join him in Detroit.

The Adios Mofo tour continues Thursday in Orlando and will wrap up on Aug. 21 in Ardmore, Oklahoma.
